Cross Country

One of the oldest and possibly toughest sporting challenges is cross country running.

A foot race between two points over mixed terrain and changeable weather conditions, cross country running demands a stern resolve and firm commitment.

If that sounds appealing then cross country running may be the sport for you.

The cross country season spans from September to March with races to suit all abilities from beginner to international standard.

Whether you’re a seasoned cross country runner or looking for a new challenge, cross country running is an ideal way to add an alternative to your aerobic training.

Additionally, cross country is an excellent way of laying a good fitness base for many other sports in the winter.

One of the greatest advantage cross country running has over other events is the strong team element.

Not only are you racing for individual goals but also as part of the team.

In cross country, whether you are at the front of the race or further down the field, the finishing position of each athlete is just as important.

The team spirit adds that extra element that you don’t get in individual races.

Crusaders enter teams in a number of cross country races throughout the winter, matching races of suitable standard to an athlete’s ability.

These range from county novice grade and ‘Meet and Train’ races over shorter distances for beginners to senior national championships over longer distances and higher standard, for the more experienced.

The cold dark winter months often offer little motivation to get out training.

One way of ensuring you’ll get out and stay active is to join in with a Crusaders training group that matches your ability and aspirations so you never need to train alone.

Training in a group also provides a much safer environment.

If cross country interests you, the easiest way to get involved is come down to Irishtown Stadium for the main training session of the week (Tuesday evening, See Training for details.) and let us know.

Prospective members are welcome to come along for a few weeks to see if the club suits their needs.

Alternatively, just e-mail crusadersathleticsclub@gmail.com if you have any further queries.
