The feat of the weekend has to be that of Brian O’Kelly who ran on Sunday morning in the Seville marathon, notching up a PB with a fantastic time of 2:30:45, the fastest by a Crusader in a while, to place 51st in the big city race on a twisty course but otherwise perfect conditions, temperature wise and no wind (and an indoor finish on a track). The result was surprising, given that Brian’s training had been interrupted during the past month or so with leg problems, but he admitted the last 7k were tough. Leo Lundy also ran, in preparation for longer challenges shortly. Leo finished in 4:39:37. Another excellent result came from Kieran Little who competed in the Wicklow Hospice Half marathon. The course took in a mix of trail, through the Avondale Forest, and road. Kieran is also training for a Spring marathon and his winning time of 1:17:53 and a 14 second margin over the 2nd placed runner will have given him a great deal of confidence. Ciara Lynch also ran in the race, placing 40th overall and 2nd woman finisher in 1:43:28. Indoors but outside Ireland, Adam McMullen took part on Sunday in the Grand Prix event, the Glasgow Indoor Championships (televised on the BBC), finishing in 7th place in an international field with his last jump of 7.79m. On Sunday, in sunny but chilly conditions, Donatas Jocius and Neil Brown participated in the Adamstown Community races. Donatas placed 6th in the 5k in a time of 19:43, whilst Neil ran a PB time of 44:45 to place 17th in the 10k event. Also, on Sunday, Eanna Farrell went home to west Waterford to take part in the Kilmacthomas 4 mile race, finishing in 55th place in a time of 27:38. Further afield, Maeve Curry took part in the Richmond half marathon outside London, finishing in 1:45. Over the weekend, Pat Quill finished the Transgrancanaria 125km race on Gran Canaria in a time of 29:11:38, but it was grim enough for him at times. Pat reported that there is a lovely start to the race on the beach of Las Palmas, on the north-east of the island, and it felt great to escape out of the Irish winter to somewhere warm and sunny. It was going well initially, but the front of Pat's ankle became inflamed (likely sprained) about 30k into the race. He managed to control the pain for a while with ibuprofen, but after he had maxed out on the recommended dose he ran out of options, and was reduced to a painful walk for the second half. The 11 pm start time meant that most of the race was covered in darkness and the end of the race was poorly marked, most of the signs not being fluorescent , so Pat ended up asking a taxi driver for directions to the finishing line. An enlightening experience! It was otherwise quiet from a road and track racing point of view this weekend. Nevertheless, we had some solid performances in the parkruns with an unprecedented number of first finishers in the 15 events in which our club mates participated. Dominick Branigan was the fastest in Poolbeg in a time of 18:38, whilst Catherine Thornton replicated her feat of last week in Knocknacarra, taking first place overall again, in a 9 seconds faster time (and course PB again) of 19:32, and with the same margin over the same second-placed runner as last week. Olwyn Dunne was a first finisher in Shanganagh (20th overall) in a time of 23:12, whilst Darina Scully performed the same feat in Father Collins (13th overall in a time of 23:06). Lisa Shine took 3rd overall in a modest field in Darndale (22:13), but was also a first finisher, as was her sister Fiona in Hasenheide in Berlin. In a field of 74, Fiona placed 15th overall in a time of 21:13. Elsewhere, John McAuley placed 2nd in Gorey in a time of 17:56, whilst Brian Carroll placed 4th in Griffeen (19:52). Gillian Errity also took 4th place (30th overall in 25:46) in Tolka Valley, followed by Mary Dolan in 5th (31st overall in 26:24). Michelle Geoghegan was our lone representative in Brickfields (7th woman, 26th overall) in 28:43, whilst Aidan Hudner, likewise was on his own in Glasgow, placing 47th in a time of 21:52 among 319 other runners. Donal Foley was a singleton in Hartstown (15th in 22:24), as was Brian Scanlan in River Valley (5th in 21:17) and Mairead Cashman in Bushy Dublin (90th overall, 19th woman, in 27:59). In Poolbeg Dominick was followed by Anthony Owens (8th in 20:39), Zalan Kovacs (23rd in 21:45), Gillian Curran (57th overall, 9th woman, in 25:57) and Ciara McElligott (90th overall, 34th woman, in 33:02). Finally, in St Anne’s Jonathan Claridge was the first of 6 Crusaders home in a time of 18:53 (17th place), followed by Diarmuid Byrne (19th in 19:06), Tim O’Donnell (28th in 19:29), Fiona Bane (126th overall, 10th woman, in 23:25), Colm Kernan (150th in 23:55) and Aoife Quinn (248th overall, 52nd woman, in 26:56). The most important news of the weekend was the stunning 10 minutes or so on the second day of the National Senior Indoors Championships in the National Indoor Arena in Abbotstown. In his last jump of the day, Adam McMullen managed a PB jump of 7.99m (a new Cru record) to confirm a title (defended for the umpteenth time) that was established with a 7.73 opening leap. No one else came close and each of Adam’s jumps would have been enough to win. This victory was on the back of a silver medal (7.75) behind Olympic champion Greg Rutherford (7.80) in the British championships the day before. It was likely the longest ever jump on Irish sand by an Irishman indoors, narrowly missing out on breaking the national record of 8.0m set by Ciaran McDonough in the USA in 2006. The spectacular leap came seconds before Matt Behan’s surprise victory (for some) over favourite Ben Reynolds with a PB (and Cru record) of 7.84 in the 60mH. Matt was fastest out of the blocks and was not at all upset by knocking over one of the early hurdles, leading from gun to tape. A few minutes later, our two finalists in the men’s 400m distinguished themselves with super runs to take gold and bronze. Andrew Mellon was just able to hold off the runner in second for the victory in 47.32m, whilst Jason Harvey was able to sneak through on the inside having been in 5th position on the last bend to take 3rd place (49.04). Kevin Woods nearly made it onto the podium in the men’s 800m with a courageous effort to take on Mark English, John Fitzsimons and Karl Griffin, leading for much of the race, eventually placing a solid 4th (1:57.15), well ahead of the rest of the field. Earlier, Niamh Boland took her place in the women’s 1500m final as a fastest loser (by 300ths of a second!), but she failed to improve on her time in the semi-final and finished at the back of the field (4:50.11). Still, it was excellent experience for her to run in such a strong field. The previous day, the club had also podiumed with Oisin Taylor winning bronze in the triple jump with a leap of 13.90m. Andrew Mellon (48.25) and Jason Harvey (49.25) qualified as winners of their respective 400m heats. Nick Ennis unfortunately failed to qualify, having placed 2nd in his heat (50.73), along with John O'Loughlin (5th in 57.66). Kevin Woods (1:58.65) qualified in the 800m behind Mark English whom he cleverly used to pull him along. Garret Dunne (2:09.95) unfortunately failed to go through in the same race. John O’Loughlin (26.36) gamely took on the 200m but failed to go through in the same heat as Thomas Barr. Anna Reddin finished in 6th place in the 3k in 9:55.86 behind the inspirational run of teenager Sarah Healy who finished ahead of Olympian Kerry O’Flaherty. Niamh Boland (4:42.61) finished as a fastest loser in the same 1500m heat as Kerry O’ Flaherty (who was taking on two distances) with an indoor PB, whilst Mary Horgan stepped down a distance to run in the 400m heats, but was unable to qualify (59.99). Back on Thursday evening on a fast and flat oval course, the Annual Armagh International Road races took place, attracting athletes from all over. The qualifying standard for the men’s 5k was 16 minutes and we had three athletes who ventured up to the event. It is likely that a world record was set for the number of finishers who broke 15 minutes (in a gun-to-chip timed event, so necessitating a start as close to the front as possible), with the winner coming home in 13:59. Altogether, 208 finishers were recorded (several runners falling by the wayside during the event) with 94 runners breaking 15 minutes. As an example of the quality of the field, the top Irishman home was John Travers in 17th place, a man who was to take the 3k title once again in the National Indoor Championships on Sunday. 40-year old master and Kilkenny farmer Brian Maher placed 24th. Our own runners acquitted themselves well in such a prestigious event, despite their placings. Michael Kiely ran 15:40 to take 178th spot, followed by Ciaran Diviney (200th in 16:10) and Vinnie McGuinness (206th in 16:38). There was also a nearly 200-strong men’s 3K race, in which Pablo Sanchez distinguished himself with a 19th place finish in 9:21. Leading up to the BHAA ALSAA XC races on Saturday there had been rumours of a new course being planned as a consequence of the possibility of a need for new carparks in the sports grounds at the airport, but in the event the route remained unchanged, for the time being. Not only that, but there had also been an expectation of there being ground water as has been experienced in previous years, particularly given the heavy rainfall we have seen this winter, but in fact the surface just displayed its usual sponginess and was otherwise not especially muddy. The weather was kind enough too, with not too strong a wind and a milder temperature than we have experienced of late. The first race was the women’s 2 miler with a small field of 42 runners, among them 4 Crusaders. Irene Gorman seems indefatigable at present, winning her third straight BHAA race in a row in 13:32. Yet again her victory was emphatic with an 18 second margin over Raheny’s Aine Crimin in 2nd place. Rachael Yorke just missed out on 3rd place with a strong run through the field to take 4th in 14:05, one second off the podium. Our two other participants were Sarah Lyons (17th in 15:37) and Miriam Logan in quite possibly her first cross country race (21st in 15:52). The mixed 5 mile race to follow measured about 400m long but it didn’t seem to worry the runners unduly. Albin Ingmarsson (29:59) was just narrowly held off by Eoin Devlin (29:57) for the win and Albin was followed by John Mulvihill with a fine run to place 3rd in 30:04. Next came Michael O’Conor (7th 30:54) for a top 10 position. Further back in the 114-strong field came Karl Walsh (18th in 33:14), Michael Maughan (21st in 33:18), Brendan Glynn (43rd in 36:20) and TJ Bourke (44th in 36:26) making a return to racing. Our complement of 12 racers was completed by Tim O’Donnell (54th in 37:17), Neil Brown (69th in 38:41), Phelim Murray (77th in 39:31), Robbie Moore (80th in 39:38) and Michael McGovern (82nd in 39:54), inching ever closer to Robbie to renew their past friendly rivalry. Other results over the weekend to note: As part of training for some bigger events next month (including a race from Belfast to Dublin) Leo Lundy took part in the movie-themed 4 day festival of running on the Thames tow path in England’s Home Counties. In sub-zero temperatures and a flooded route in parts (read really muddy), Leo ran the first 3 days managing a 30 mile ultra each day. Day 1 "breakfast club" he came home 5th overall. Day 2 "grease" saw him 6th overall. Day 3 "Jaws" he was 18th overall. Around 100 finished each day. As part of his Boston marathon preparation, Barry McGuire took part in the East of Ireland series Lusk half marathon on Saturday, recording a PB time of 1:23:51, placing 5th in a field of 95 runners. On Sunday Daniel Lowe demonstrated his continuing good form with victory in the Tony McGowan 10K in Co. Leitrim. Daniel took on a field of 123 and came home a couple of seconds ahead of the 2nd placed runner in a time of 37:03. A challenging IMRA race took place on Saturday morning up and down Trooperstown Hill in Wicklow. We had at least three Crusaders in the 9.7km race, with its climb of 380m: Gavan Doherty, Becky Quinn and Laura Flannelly. Results have yet to be published and, once done, the report will be updated. There were podium runs in several parkruns on Saturday morning. One notable feat was that of Catherine Thornton who, on the challenging Knocknacarra circuit in Galway, pulled out a first finisher placing over the entire field in a course PB time for her of 19:41, having the satisfaction of having reeled in two male runners with about a km to go, including one whose line made the course considerably shorter than intended. Other noteworthy runs came from Peter O’Toole who took 2nd place in Belfast’s Waterworks Parkrun, Eddie Nugent (a man swearing never to run XC again after the national masters last week in Galway!) who was 3rd in the hilly Cabinteely in 19:42, Helena Walsh, who placed 20th overall, 2nd female finisher, in Limerick in 21:30, Sean Smith, who placed 3rd in Fairview in 21:10 (followed by Colm Kiernan in 6th in 21:54) and Kieran Little who placed 2nd in Poolbeg. Kieran was joined by Russell Murphy (30th in 22:27), Colm Foley (37th in 22:52), Kate Healy (73rd overall, 15th female, in 26:09), Ali May Hannigan (80th overall, 18th female, in 27:01), Louise O’Riordan (93rd overall, 27th female, in 28:36) and Mairin Shine, mopping up the back markers (142nd overall, 58th female, in 44:38). Aidan Hudner placed 58th in a field of 317 in a time of 22:02 in Victoria Park, Glasgow, whilst Amy Brogan took 29th place overall, 8th female, in 26:05 in Waterstown. We also had one runner in Malahide. Aisling O’Connor placed 193rd overall, 53rd woman, in 28:55. Likewise, Donal Foley was the lone Crusader in Porterstown, taking 16th spot in 23:20. Marius McNicholas continues to improve his times, when he ran 20:56 to place 14th in Bushy Park, followed by Mairead Cashman who took 81st spot overall, 15th woman, in 28:12. We had 3 runners in St. Anne’s Raheny. Matt Cranley led the charge in 23rd place with his buggy and getting a buggy-pushing PB (first time under 20 minutes) in 19:55. Matt was followed by Noel Reilly (46th in 21:10) and Sharon Woods (168th overall, 27th woman, in 25:37). Finally, 6 Crusaders joined the field for the inaugural parkrun in the picturesque Tolka Valley. Denis Murphy was the first of our number home in 18th spot (21:28), followed by Fiona Bane (48th overall, 7th female, in 23:50), Aoife Quinn (82nd overall, 16th female, in 27:24), Don Anderton (133rd in 35:15) and then lastly the two pickers up: Kevin Flynn (164th in 49:09) and Diarmuid Byrne (165th in 51:44). Cross country races at this time of year rarely are. However, equally no one expected there to be virtually no blade of grass visible on the 2Km and 1km loops that made up the new course on the Kilcornan Estate in Clarinbridge for the National Masters and Senior Intermediates Championships. The result of the effects of rain and sleet on an already saturated field hosting 13 races, 9 of them juvenile, was a mudbath and a huge challenge for runners in the later races, getting progressively worse through the afternoon, with racers’ shoes weighed down with heavy mud from the quagmire. In fact several athletes lost shoes around the course. Even the supporters were finding the going tough trying to catch runners in more than one location. If you stood around for too long you would sink in the mud and standing anywhere close to the barrier tape often resulted in a severe splattering as runners sought to find the shallowest route along the edges of the track. It was a truly agricultural experience for everyone and, as Eddie Nugent commented, a character-building experience! In efforts to stop slipping (even with the longest of spikes) runners often had to windmill with their arms and, as Michael Wycherley further pointed out, the lateral movement was as great as the forward movement in the race. Another commented that every step required a conscious decision, it was so hard to run. In addition, there were rocks dotted around in the mud, which made it even more treacherous in places. The event took place in chilly conditions, with alternating sun and showers of sleet throughout the afternoon on a course that had no real pronounced hills, but two relatively significant drags that sapped the strength of all. No one warmed up on the course and no one cooled down on it. Instead they prepared on the estate's roads, which probably sums it all up really! Our women’s masters team excelled themselves in the conditions in a race enjoying a field of 180 runners (including O/65 men). We fielded a team of 7 and they came home with the team gold by a significant margin (103 points to Sportsworld’s 130). Indeed, as we say, every place counts and 2nd through 4th-placed teams (Sportsworld 130, St. Finbarrs 131 and Youghal 133) were only 3 points apart. Adrienne Jordan led the charge in the 4k race, placing 16th in 16:57 and the rest of our scorers were well bunched in the field. Adrienne was followed by Ilona McElroy making her debut as a masters runner (22nd in 17:18) and then came Becky Quinn, an accomplished mountain runner for the club, but having limited experience of XC and who turned out in trail shoes with no spikes, surprising us all with 32nd place (17:45) leading a grateful Niamh Corby across the line just behind (33rd in 17:46), the pair having worked together throughout the race. Super runs came from spoilers Grainne Regan (70th in 19:05) and Dee Ni Chearbhaill (91st in 28:10), whilst Mairead Cashman had an extremely tough day, but holding on to place 173rd in 28:10. There was an added bonus for Adrienne and Ilona in winning silver medals with the Dublin county team. The masters men’s 7k race had an even larger field, with 248 finishers. The 4-man Cru team, without any reserves or spoilers, ran creditably to place 9th out of 24 O/35 teams and they were led home by Ciaran Diviney (32nd in 28:52) who placed 4th in his age category. Ciaran was followed by the usual strong-running and revelation of the season, Michael Wycherley (41st in 29:32), Vinnie McGuinness, who after a difficult first half recovered well in the second to place 48th in 29:52 and Eddie Nugent (127th in 33:25). Just two women declared for the intermediates in their 5k race. In a small field of 52 runners, Fiona Shine placed 41st in 28:31, followed by Darina Scully (49th in 31:01) and then we had just one finisher in the men’s 80-strong 8k intermediate race. Joe McDermott took 71st spot in 39:06, whilst Frank Hague had to pull out during the event. Hats off to everyone who took on the challenge yesterday and many congratulations to the women’s masters team! In finishing in, respectively, 2:54:40 and 3:24:29, both Gary O’Hanlon and Caitriona Jennings set new course records to take the titles the Irish 50 km championships on Saturday in Donadea Forest, Co. Kildare. We had two finishers from the race. Brian Scanlan came home in 36th place out of a field of 184 in a respectable 4:09:15, whilst former national champion Olwyn Dunne placed 136th in 4:57:00 (20th woman finisher and 3rd in her age category), with husband Joe also out on the course helping to pace the race, the day after seeing their son Jack contributing to Ireland’s win over Italy in the U20 rugby with his 2nd international cap (and likely YouTube fame). Further west, in Galway, three of our members took on the Gorgeous Gort 5k on Sunday. The race took place in cold, but otherwise good, road running conditions (and before the snow arrived). Joe Walsh placed 7th and 1st M40 in a field of 175 runners and a great time of 18:19, whilst his wife Alma was 15th overall, 3rd woman finisher behind race winner Sinead Brody from GCH who used to train with the Cru, in 19:28. Both Joe and Alma are in training for the Paris marathon in April. Ultra-marathon runner Leo Lundy took on a shorter distance than usual this weekend, placing 52nd (5th M50) in 23:55. On Thursday of last week there was another round of indoor races at the National Indoor Arena in Abbotstown. In heat 2 of the 60m dash, Bryan McGetrice placed 3rd in 7.96, followed by John O’Loughlin in 4th place (8.11). John went on to place 3rd in heat 2 of the 400m in a time of 57.98. Finally, Denis Murphy joined the famous Joe Gough in heat 4 of the 800m, placing 7th in a great time of 2:32.25. The 65-year old Gough ran 2:18.19 for the distance, winning the heat. In the mountains at the weekend, at least two Crusaders joined 94 other runners in Mullaghmeen. On a challenging 10.8km course with its 400m+ ascent in snowy conditions, Laura Flannelly placed 41st overall, 2nd woman finisher, in 1:07:20 behind race winner Javier Hernando (52:59), followed by Olan Callinan (77th in 1:24:01). The usual sprinkling of Crusaders took part in parkruns on Saturday morning. The most noteworthy performance came from James Murphy, still on holiday in South Africa, where he ran the St. Francis parkrun, on a golf course near Port Elizabeth, returning as first finisher in 19:10 ahead of 135 other runners. Not in the details below was the run of Aidan Hudner who finished the parkrun in Victoria Park Glasgow in 64th place out of 295 runners in a time of 22:46. David Carter placed 2nd in Cabinteely in 19:39, followed by Lisa Shine (146th overall, 62nd woman, in 46:24). Kate Murray took on Bushy Dublin, finishing in 32nd place overall, 3rd woman home, in 24:00, whilst in Fairview Sarah Lyons was 4th woman finisher, 25th overall, in 24:34. Sean Smith placed 6th (21:25) and Phelim Murray, 14th in 23:03, in the same event. We had a large turnout in Poolbeg as usual, with the contingent led home by Anthony Owens (8th in 20:34), followed by Zalan Kovacs (19th in 21:31), Russell Murphy (28th in 22:51), David Timoney (42nd in 24:04), Gillian Errity (60th overall, 15th woman, in 25:24) and Iseult Ni Chuinneagain (101st overall, 34th woman, in 29:59). We had a similarly good showing in Porterstown, where Diarmuid made a welcome return, placing 5th in 20:20, followed by Ciaran Smyth (11th in 21:22), Fiona Bane (28th overall, 3rd woman, in 23:37), Amy Brogan, another returner (40th overall, 7th woman, in 25:19) and Maria Pertl mopping up the back markers (152nd overall, 78th woman, in 51:03). Mairead Cashman prepared for her ordeal in Clarinbridge with a parkrun in Marlay, placing 340th overall, 94th woman, in 28:57, whilst, in Shanganagh, Mike Stewart took 16th spot in 21:41. Leo Lundy took on another 5k in preparation for Gort. On Saturday, he ran in Oranmore, placing 38th in 25:04. Finally, Colm Kernan (117th) and Denis Murphy (118th) placed side-by-side in 24:36 in St. Anne’s, followed by Lorraine Fitzsimons (308th overall, 86th woman, in 31:18). There has been quite a lot of activity in Abbotstown over the past two weekends at the indoor arena. One event that was missed from last week’s results was the junior and U23 indoor championships, in which we had at least 4 young Crusaders participating. Shane Kean placed 5th in heat 2 of the junior men’s 60m in 7.21 and then placed 2nd in the long jump with a jump of 6.62m. Kevin Woods placed 2nd in 50.95 in heat 3 of the U23 400m, going on to take 5th place in the final in 51.99. Kevin also took 3rd spot in heat 3 of the 200m in 25.39. Alix Hughes placed 5th in the women’s U23 60mH in 9.37, whilst Matt Behan ran away with victory in the men’s U23 60H in a time of 7.97. Then, this last Sunday, we had several of our club mates competing in the AAI indoor games at the same venue. Bob Lyne placed 4th in the men’s 3K walk in 19:05.40. Ciara Barry placed 2nd in heat 2 of the 60m (a photo finish with 3rd) in 8.05. Matt Behan won both series one and two of the men’s 60mH in 7.98 and 8.02. Ilona McElroy placed 6th in the women’s 3k in 11:01.85. Garret Dunne placed 7th in heat 3 of the men’s 800m in 2:08.78. Ciara Barry went on to run in heat 2 of the women’s 200m, placing 3rd in 26.28, whilst our 3 competitors in the various heats of the men’s 400m also did well. Jason Harvey took 2nd in heat 1 in 48.96, with Andrew Mellon taking 1st place in heat 2 in 47.98. Finally, John O’Loughlin ran 58.79 in heat 5 to place 5th. Niamh Boland ran well to win heat 2 of the women’s 1500m in a time of 4:43.55. Lastly, Oisin Taylor won the triple jump in 13.65m. There was a significant turnout of Crusaders in the two XC races organised by the BHAA on Saturday morning on behalf of the Garda. In chilly, breezy conditions on quite muddy and waterlogged terrain, up and down the hills and gullies of the Phoenix Park near the magazine fort , we had 10 women take part in the 2 mile race and we dominated the top end of a race which had 267 participants (numbers swollen by those running under the Lord Mayor’s initiative). Irene Gorman appears to be invincible right now in XC and led more or less from gun to tape with Adrienne Jordan and Niamh Corby in hot pursuit. They all managed the slippery conditions well, with Irene taking the victory in 12:54, followed by Adrienne (13:03) and Niamh (13:31). We had 5 runners in the top 10 and 7 in the top 15, with Niamh Aspell running strongly to place 8th in 14:18, followed by Serena Moloney (10th in 14:37) and Fiona Shine (11th in 14:42) who worked together for parts of the race. Kate Murray took a creditable 15th place in 15:09. Our contingent was completed by Orlaith de Burca (40th in 17:55), Emilie Fournier, in her 2nd XC race and with a chip that for once didn’t fail (49th in 18:39) and Mairead Cashman (57th in 20:05). The mixed 4 mile race had a good sized field, but not quite as large as the women’s, with just over 200 runners. Indeed, the women’s race was so full, there were still participants in the event not yet over the finish line when the men’s race started 30 minutes after the first. Thankfully, they did not impede the field too much, led home once again by Sean Hehir in excellent form and untouchable. Nevertheless, after running in a group of about 5 or 6 athletes in pursuit of Sean until the last turn with about 250m to go, Karl Fahy managed to break away and give himself some daylight, finishing in 2nd place. For yet another week, Michael Wycherley put in a sound performance managing to put daylight between himself and pursuers which included Joe McDermott. Michael placed 14th in 23:45 (2nd M40) with Joe running a spirited 24:29, to place 21st. There were other excellent runs from Michael Maughan (33rd in 25:19) and by Joe Walsh (37th in 25:46) who was supposed to be preparing himself for the following day’s Trim 10 miler! John Fahy was next in 49th place (26:51). There were 8 more Crusaders to cross the line, headed by Brendan Glynn with a super 54th place (27:09) and Tom Dunne (58th in 27:28) who is getting stronger by the race. Anthony Owens was next (74th in 28:19), followed by Denis Murphy (84th in 28:45), Robbie Moore (88th in 28:52), Eanna Farrell (95th in 29:15), Mike McGovern (107th in 30:02) and Tony Hackett (115th in 30:37), making a welcome return to racing after a long layoff. Also on Saturday there was an IMRA race in the mountains around Ticknock. We had at least one participant in the 7.8km event in the winter league. In a race that involved challenging terrain with a climb of 330m, Laura Flannelly came home in 79th place overall (5th woman home) in 43:47 behind race winner Luke Maher (33:39) in a field of 204. We now come onto Sunday’s events. The day started rainy, but by the time the two 10 mile road races covered in this report took place, conditions were dry enough. We had four participants in the famous John Treacy Dungarvan 10 miler. In a field of nearly 2,200 runners, Dave Barry placed 83rd breaking 60 minutes for the first time, with a PB time of 59:42. Dave was followed by Dee Ni Chearbhaill (464th overall, 42nd woman, in 1:11:34), running a minute faster than her last year's time and with a strong finish, Fiona Bane (1,006th overall, 187th woman, in 1:20:55) and Fiona Lane (2,094th overall, 905th woman, in 1:46:08). Members will be interested to hear of the performances of two runners from other clubs who train with us. The visually-impaired athlete, Declan Ryan from Thurles, placed 61st in 58:45, whilst Sean Murphy of United Striders took 79th in 59:39. Then, in Trim, in its 4th running, we had 7 Crusaders in the race. An event with another large field (in excess of 1,300) witnessed Kieran Little coming home in a super 15th place in 57:35, followed by John McAuley (70th in 61:23), Paul O’Meara (86th in 62:27), training for Boston and in his first race since the Philadelphia marathon last year and Joe Walsh, defying the odds and running a sweet 62:39 for a top 100 place (93rd). Joe’s wife, Alma Hanevy, was next in 167th place overall (12th woman) in a great PB time of 65:42 and Alma was followed by Ciara Lehane (469th overall, 90th woman, in 77:21) and Carina Davidson (553rd overall, 128th woman) in 79:36. Leo Lundy also reported that he took part in the scenic but extremely hilly Maree 8k (near Oranmore in Galway). His 41:32 was solid enough for him take 130th place out of 280 participants and 6th in his age group. Not included in the results for the parkruns shown below are those of Kris Ryan who was a first finisher in Coomera, coming home in 18th place overall out of 136 runners in a time of 22:48. Her times are beginning to fall in the Australian climate! James Murphy took advantage of a trip to South Africa to run in the George parkrun, placing 2nd out of 614 participants in a time of 19:40. Elsewhere there were a few podium places, but also a lot of top 10 finishes across the board. Darina Scully placed 4th woman (45th overall) in Malahide. David Long came home in 10th in 19:42 in Marlay (another runner to record falling times), Sharon Woods took 4th place (27th overall) in a time of 24:08 in Tymon, whilst Fiona Bane secured 2nd (11th place overall) in Waterstown with a time of 24:06. Daniel Lowe distinguished himself with 2nd place in Lough key in a time of 17:55, whilst Brian Scanlan came home in 5th in Donabate (19:54). Noel Reilly was also a top 10 performer in Longford 910th in 22:54), along with Marius McNicholas in Bushy Dublin (10th in 21:42). In Poolbeg we had 7 participants: David Timoney (11th in 20:23), Zalan Kovacs (27th in 21:27), Colm Foley (44th in 22:54), Niamh Quinn with a podium place (3rd woman, 48th overall, in 23:35), Aisling O’Connor, another runner, like Niamh to place in the top 10 (64th overall, 8th woman, in 25:14), Mary Dolan (89th overall, 19th woman, in 27:09) and Ciara McElligott (125th overall, 41st woman, in 32: 04). Our last two top tenners went to Sean Smith (10th in Fairview in 21:51) and Leo Lundy (10th in 24:20) in Oughterard.
