There was some excellent racing over the weekend, particularly in a new race down in Cork. Below are the results. Before we start, however, in the last report we missed Simon Everard’s exploits in the Scottish Masters indoor championships in Glasgow last weekend. Our London-based Irish exile managed to take gold in the men’s 400m in his age category (albeit in a small field) in a time of 54.58. He also took home bronze medals in both the 60m and the 200m with respective times of 7.75 and 25.22. Congratulations to him. On Saturday morning, in the last BHAA cross-country races of the season, several Crusaders headed out to the university grounds in Maynooth for the annual running of the 2 and 4 mile races there, organised by AIB. On what is a flat course in overcast but mild conditions, we had three of our members compete in the modest 31-strong women’s 2 mile race. Once again, Katie Rogers distinguished herself with a 3rd-place finish in 12:47, followed by Rachael Yorke in 5th (13:22) and coach Susan Walsh (21st in 15:27). The second race of the morning was the mixed 4-mile event. Karl Walsh was our lead runner home in 10th place in a smallish field of 86 and a time of 23:07. Karl was followed by Brendan Glynn (44th in 26:56), Robbie Moore (50th in 27:21) and coach Mike McGovern (65th in 29:12). Members will be interested to hear that Sean Murphy, who trains with the club, crossed the line in 13th place in a time of 23:31. A new event in the racing calendar took place on Sunday down in Kinsale in Co. Cork. Clearly intending to fill the gap left by the recent discontinuance after 40 years of the Ballycotton 10, the organisers are likely to have created a firm favourite going forward. The inaugural event saw a field of nearly 650 finishers, included in their number 15 Crusaders. It is likely that none of them came home disappointed. Described as nice conditions but hilly in places, particularly in the last mile or two against a stiff breeze, the female contingent was led home by Irene Gorman who took 2nd place (54th overall) in what is possibly a PB time of 66:47. Irene was followed home in 6th place (3rd in her age category) and 86th overall by Alma Hanevy in her first race since coming back from injury. Further back, side by side, came Lisa and Fiona Shine with the same time of 84:17 (331st and 332nd overall, 69th and 70th women home). The men also ran extremely well. They were led home by Michael O’Conor, whose decent weekly mileage is paying dividends. Michael ran 56:42 (a likely PB) for 4th place, followed closely behind by Michael Kiely in 5th spot (56:54) and Shane Collins (6th in 57:12). John Mulvihill was next, to complete a top 10 finish (9th in 57:31) and he was followed by Ciaran Diviney two places later in 57:51 and 3rd in his age category. Other top 50 places went to Ger Forde (19th in 59:12), Joe McDermott (27th in 60:36), Joe Walsh (32nd in 61:45) and Eugene McDonough in a PB time of 62:17 (34th) in hot pursuit. We also had excellent runs from Niall O’Connell (105th in 71:52) and Tim O’Donnell in a possible PB time of 72:53 (120th). Also on Sunday, we had a few participate in an IMRA mountain running event. Set on Trooperstown Hill in Co. Wicklow it was described as a 9.7k race on difficult terrain with a 380m ascent. It was also made more challenging by the misty conditions experienced in the mountains on that day. Brendan Murphy distinguished himself by coming over the line in 2nd place (41:01) and he was followed home by Brian McGuckin (33rd in 50:18) just getting back from recent injury. Laura Flannelly (49th overall and 7th woman) was next in a time of 53:16 and the contingent was completed by Berndt Heim (113th in 7:55). The field measured 126 runners. We may well have had runners in the Wicklow Hospice races on Sunday, but at time of print, results were not available. The report will be updated if there were any of our runners involved. The parkruns continue to flourish along with the participation of Crusader athletes. This weekend saw strong involvement from our clubmates. We start, as usual, with those recording podium places. In an event that saw 13 Crusaders participate, we had first place finishers among both men and women in Poolbeg. Stephen Hurley crossed the line in a time of 17:58, whilst Aine Kenny ran 20:17 for 22nd place overall. In St Anne’s, Joe O’Donoghue was first finisher in a time of 17:17, whilst Kieran Little ran 18:03 for first place in Clarisford. Another first place finish was recorded by Sarah Lyons in Mullingar, with a time of 21:45 and 13th place overall. Finally, Fiona and Lisa Shine, in preparation for Kinsale the following day, took podium places in Glen River, with Fiona first finisher in 11th spot overall in 21:38, followed by Lisa who ran 24:49 for 26th place overall and 3rd female. Returning to the overall results, Liam Lyster was our lone representative in Strokestown where he took 14th place in 27:25, whilst Luke Haran came home in 6th in Mungret in 20:51. Brian Carroll took on Griffeen, and finishing in 5th place in 19:42, whilst Dee Lawlor crossed the finish line in 10th place in Shanganagh in a time of 20:21, followed by Orlaith de Burca who placed 66th overall, 14th female in 26:07. In St. Anne’s Raheny, Joe was followed by Emer Kenny (314th overall, 83rd female, in 28:04) and Lorraine Fitzsimons (439th and 167th in 31:49). In Malahide, Ronan Moynihan took 12th place in 19:26, followed by Darina Scully with an impressive 32:54 (322nd and 125th), whilst, in Marlay Park, Anthony O’Reilly placed 25th in 20:04 followed by Mary Noelle Rohan (429th and 151st in 33:08). Poolbeg continues to show impressive numbers and Stephen was followed by Kenan Furlong (4th in 18:51), David Timoney (16th in 19:46), Kieran Finucane (18th in 20:03), Russell Murphy (42nd in 22:26), Fiona Bane (48th and 6th in 22:48), Neil Brown (59th in 23:23), Maria del Carmen Jimenez Campos (63rd and 10th in 23:26), Ali May Hann (86th and 20th in 24:29), Maureen McGinley (152nd and 56th in 28:03), Don Anderton (189th in 32:38) and Sharon Woods tailwalking in her 99th parkrun (225th and 65th in 45:26). In Tolka Valley we saw Cormac McGuire run 22:55 for 12th place, followed by Maria Pertl and Diarmuid Byrne (respectively 39th (12th) and 40th in the same time of 28:11). Brian Scanlan was our sole runner in River Valley where he placed 4th in 20:31, whilst Mairead Cashman ran in Bushy Park once again (164th and 50th in 29:20). Declan Connor ran in Corkagh (8th in 21:28), whilst Brian Carroll took on Griffeen (5th in 19:42), followed home by Colm Foley (44th in 23:56). Finally, we had a few runners in overseas parkruns as usual. Kris Ryan ran once again in Paradise Point in Australia where she placed 36th and 7th in 23:00 in a field of 222, whilst Aidan Hudner ran in Glasgow in a field of 478 where he took 84th spot in 22:05. Then, in Queenstown, New Zealand, Paul and Aoife Kelly ran with 94 other participants with Paul taking 13th place in 22:51, followed by Aoife (24th and 5th in 24:04). The only thing missing was mountain running, but we had some excellent indoor track and field as well as some cross country and road racing.
The week started on Wednesday with the AIT Games on the indoor track in Athlone. On a night when Ciara Mageean set a track record and PB for the 1500m, Matt Behan also featured in what turned out to be a warm up race for the National Indoors at the weekend. Matt placed 5th (but first Irishman across the line) in the 60mH final in a time of 8.02, having run 8.06 in the heats. Then, over the weekend we had a good representation in the National Indoors in Abbottstown. On Saturday Kevin Woods placed 3rd in the 2nd heat of the men’s 800m to qualify for Sunday’s final, whilst Mary Horgan did likewise in the women’s 800m. Mary’s race was exciting to watch. Knowing that she had to run fast to qualify, she made sure by bravely leading the field for the first lap and then being pulled in to 5th place at the end in 2:12.87. The first 5 from that heat went through to the final, with only 3 automatic places. Andrew Mellon also ran well to win his heat in the 400m in 48.26 and qualified also for his final. Although Nick Ennis placed 2nd to Andrew in the same race in 49.29, he was agonisingly a few hundredths of a second off from qualifying in one of the fastest loser spots. Interestingly one of the heats didn’t even produce a qualifier. Sunday’s finals proved to be dramatic. Andrew came through to place 2nd in the 400m, but narrowly missing out on a European qualifying time (based on a recently changed standard) as a result of some barging at the end of the first lap which saw Thomas Barr flung from the race as Andrew tried to protect himself from another runner crossing into him. Matt won his national title with an excellent 7.96 in the men’s 60mH. Valantinos Goularos also ran in the race, his first national final, placing 6th in 8.98. Shane Keane took bronze in the men’s long jump with a leap of 6.8m, preserving, in the absence of Adam McMullen who is recovering from an operation to repair a torn Achilles, the recent tradition of Crusaders podiuming in the event. Shane also ran in the final of the men's 60m, placing 8th in a time of 7.02, having taken 2nd spot in his semi-final in 6.95 and 3rd in his initial heat in 7.02. Finally, Mary improved on her heat time in the 800m final, placing 7th in 2:12.44, whilst Kevin also placed 7th in his 800m final with a time of 1:56.51. Well done to all. Another exciting event that took place on Thursday was the Armagh International Men’s 5k, which is pretty much an invitational race and which each year goes from strength to strength. There were 203 men in this year's event that required a qualifying standard of 16:00 to run. We ended up having just one runner in a race that saw a record number of 113 athletes break 15 minutes in mild and calm conditions, and Brian O’Kelly was one of them, recording a PB time of 14:46 on the 5 lap course and 79th place. Brian reported that the first kilometre was chaos as it was a gun-timed (rather than chip-timed) event and everyone was trying to get as close to the front as possible at the start. On Saturday morning we has a good turnout for the BHAA ALSAA XC races, held on the usual flat course up next to the airport. As usual, the women ran their 2 mile event first and Katie Rogers came home in 3rd place in an excellent 12:14 in a modest field of 47 runners. Niamh Corby crossed the line in 6th place and 2nd in her age category in a time of 12:50, followed by Sarah Lyons (16th in 13:46), Maeve Muldowney (22nd in 14:01), Maria Kennedy (27th in 14:22) and Susan Walsh (33rd in 14:50 and 4th in her age category). The mixed 5 mile race had an altogether much larger field and we had at least 10 athletes compete in it. First home in the field of 131 was Ger Forde in 7th place and a time of 28:58. Ger was followed by Michael Wycherley (10th in 29:35 and 2nd in his age category), Joe McDermott not too far behind (13th in 29:43), Frank Hague (18th in 30:13), Karl Walsh (29th in 31:24), Tim O’Donnell, just back from his far eastern travels (72nd in 35:33), Brendan Glynn (74th in 35:42), Robbie Moore (76th in 35:47 and 4th in his age category), Pat Quill (92nd in 37:38) and Michael McGovern (93rd in 37:40). Also, over the weekend we had 3 runners take on the Seville marathon. In good conditions and off the back of little training Marius McNicholas ran 3:34:28, whilst Olwyn and Joe Dunne ran, respectively, 3:40:13 and 3:41:46, somehow missing each other in the final 5k(!). Meanwhile, closer to home, James Cahill, who is training for the London marathon, ran the Drumshanbo Half marathon on a “flat course” as described by Leitrim locals alongside the banks of Lough Allan, producing a PB result of 1:25:24 and placing 8th in a field of nearly 280 runners. Finally, we show as usual a record of the parkrun results. We had several running abroad again. Maureen McGinley took in Fartalle in Italy, placing 18th overall (6th female) in a field of 40 in a time of 28:25. In Wanaka, New Zealand, Aoife Kelly placed 8th overall, 4th female, in a time of 24:33, whilst husband Paul placed 9th just behind in 24:34. There were 33 runners in the event. In Paradise Point, Australia, Kris Ryan ran 23:31 in a field of 266 to place 41st overall, 5th female, whilst once again Aidan Hudner ran with 483 others in Glasgow, placing 69th in 21:59. There were podium finishes for Stephen Hurley who came home as first finisher in Poolbeg in 16:59 and Luke Davis who came home in 3rd place in Cabinteely in 18:58. In the same event, Luke was followed by Dave Carter who ran 19:32 for 4th and Roland Cottle who recorded a PB in placing 66th in 26:33. Meanwhile, in Poolbeg, Stephen was followed by Kenan Furlong (4th in 18:55), Dave Tilly (12th in 19:41), Kieran Finucane (28th in 20:50), Luke Haran (33rd in 21:10), Ava Rose Clarke (74th overall, 7th female, in 23:46), Mari Hansen (78th and 9th in 24:00), Mary Dolan (101st and 16th in 24:49), Cliodhna O’Reilly (110th and 31st in 25:29), Aisling O’Riordan (138th and 31st in 27:25) and Ali May Hann (164th and 47th in 28:41). Neil Brown placed 4th in 22:56 in Tyrrelstown, whilst Cormac McGuire placed 33rd in 22:11 in Tolka Valley. Liam Lyster also placed 33rd in Strokestown in a time of 28:10. We had a few runners descending on Tramore where Diarmuid Byrne took 6th place in 20:06, followed by Fiona Bane (60th and 16th in 26:56), Darina Scully (111th and 45th in 33:48), Aoife Clarke, just behind (112th and 46th in 33:49) and Maria Pertl (113th and 47th in the same time). Leo Lundy took on Oranmure where he placed 68th in 29:24, whilst in Malahide Brian Scanlan finished in 14th in 19:34, followed by Ronan Moynihan (23rd in 19:49). Kate Murray was our lone representative in Marlay Park where she placed 98th and 10th in a time of 22:52, whilst Brian Carroll ran in Griffeen Park, taking 9th spot in 19:53. Brian Kelleher ran 21:07 to take 54th place in St. Anne’s, whilst Declan Connor came home in 10th place in Ballina in a time of 21:38. Mike Stewart and Orlaith de Burca took on Shanganagh, placing, respectively, 24th and 83rd (12th female) in 21:53 and 26:14, whilst Kevin Flynn finished in 153rd in 39:10 in Porterstown. Lastly, Mairead Cashman found another venue to run. This time it was the setting of Stormont, where she placed 154th (47th female) in 30:09. Thanks to Sportfile for the Abbottstown photos. The principal one came from Andrew Mellon who set a record for his alma mater Queen’s University Belfast in the final of the 400m, with a win in 47.70, having run 48.97 in qualifying. Shane Keane took silver in the long jump with a leap of 6.61m, whilst James Kelly also took 2nd place in the shot put with a throw of 14.35m. Nick Ennis also competed in the 2nd heat of the 200m and, despite a 2nd place in 22.91 in lane 3, he was unable to progress. A couple of our clubmates took part in the national 50k championships in Donadea on Saturday, and a race where Gary O’Hanlon once again set a national record in an amazing time of 2:40:46. Andrew Kinneen, who is training for the Rotterdam marathon in early April and will be delighted by his run, took 36th place in a field of 185, in a time of 4:12:46 (equivalent to a close to 3:30 marathon effort), whilst Donatas Jocius came home in 75th place in a time of 4:32:58. The race involved 10 laps of a 5k forested course. largely flat, but with a hill towards the end of each lap. Kate Murray reports that 140 women turned out for the 2nd of 3 races in the Meet and Train cross country league on Sunday in Cherryfield, hosted by Bros Pearce AC. In cold but sunny conditions, with some nice mucky spots from recent rain and a bit of wind, 16 Crusaders women competed in the 3.5k race on a relatively flat course (but with a couple of tricky hills) that is also used by the BHAA. The A team was led home again by Grainne Regan in a fantastic 4th place finish in 14:26. Grainne was followed by Fiona Shine (having been undeterred by an earlier stand-off with a "rabid" (!) dog!). After a sprint finish with 2 other athletes, she finished 7th in 14:37. Fiona was followed by Sarah Lyons in an excellent finish to place 9th (14:46), Ciara Lynch in her 2nd cross country race (15th in 15:00), Kate Murray (17th in 15:11) who crossed the finish line with Emer Kenny (18th in 15:11), Geraldine Clements getting the better of her rival from the last race in a great sprint finish to take 29th (15:31), Lisa Shine coming back to form (41st in 15:56), Carina Davidson (53rd in 16:16), Olwyn Dunne who is tapering for the marathon in the sun (Seville) next Sunday (57th in 16:16), another Spring marathoner Maria del Carmen Jimenez Campos (68th in 16:41), Anna Shine (75th in 16:53), Orlaith de Burca (88th in 17.32), Michelle Geoghegan (116th in 18:29), Aisling Dilworth (118th in 18:42) and Maureen McGinley (121st in 18:48). After the first race the A team of Grainne, Fiona, Sarah, Kate, Emer and Dorothy Maguire were sitting in 3rd place closely behind Bros Pearce. After 2 races, in the A division Crusaders A team now lie in 2nd place on 114 points behind Sportsworld A team (on 94 points) with Dunboyne A team in 3rd (on 141 points). Crusaders B lie in 2nd place in the B division with 398 points behind Esker B (on 313 points). Crusaders C, meanwhile, continue to lead the C division on 658 points with their nearest rivals, Bros Pearce C, on 690 points. It is all to play for in the 3rd and final race of the league on Sunday 3rd March in Abbottstown! Leo Lundy reports that he “hobbled” around a marathon in and around Fore Abbey in Co. Westmeath over the weekend. Meanwhile, Kris Ryan won the 12-hour dawn to dusk event at Caboolture in Queensland after winning the 24-hour event at the same venue last year. There was a much larger than usual turnout in the parkruns on Saturdays and again we list those who managed podium places first. In Monaghan Adam Flanagan was first finisher in a time of 18:12, whilst Joe O’Donoghue also finished in first place in St. Anne’s in a time of 17:45. Emer Kenny also ran there, placing 260th overall and 68th female in 28:34. Serena Moloney was also a first finisher in Templemore where she placed 7th overall in a time of 21:53. Amy Brogan was 3rd (18th overall) in Porterstown in 23:26, whilst Rory Goldsmith took on Knocknacarra, taking 2nd spot in 19:48. Ciarain Kelly also took 2nd place in 18:24 in Shanganagh. Meanwhile, we had a useful showing in Poolbeg, where Fiona Bane came 2nd (39th overall) in 24:05. Fiona was joined by Kenan Furlong (3rd in 19:09), David Timoney (13th in 20:24), Kieran Finucane (14th in 20:39), Sharon Woods (51st overall, 9th female, in 24:51), Ava Rose Clarke (57th overall, 11th female, in 25:12), Killian Stokes (71st in 26:27), Maureen McGinley (96th overall, 26th female, in 28:22), Iseult Ni Chuinneagain (113th overall, 35th female, in 31:23), Ciara McElligott (120th and 38th in 31:48), Don Anderton (136th in 33:22) and Cliodhna O’Reilly (137th and 47th in 33:24). Another podium place went to Brendan Glynn who ran in Portumna. Brendan placed 3rd in 22:38. Brian Scanlan was 4th in River Valley in a time of 21:30, whilst Dominick Branigan placed 4th in 19:56 in Bushy Park. Further afield Aoife and Paul Kelly ran in Taupo in New Zealand, placing respectively 22nd (5th female) and 33rd in a field of 82, in times of 23:32 and 26:15, whilst Kris Ryan ran in Australia, in Mudgeeraba with 155 other participants, placing 71st and 22nd in 31:08, just before embarking on her epic race noted above. In Marlay Park, Luke Davis placed 5th in 18:38, followed by Mary Noelle Rohan (406th and 127th in 32:33), whilst, in Malahide, Ronan Moynihan took 24th spot in 20:20, followed by Darina Scully who placed 397th and 170th in 45:55. Luke Haran placed 5th in Mungret, whilst Liam Lyster took 18th place in Strokestown in a time of 27:15. Mairead Cashman ran 29:45 in Glen River for 71st place overall (and 20th), whilst Declan O’Connor took 8th spot in Corkagh in 21:42. Whilst we did not field any runners this year in the two Intermediates races, we had a decent showing in both men’s and women’s masters events. The women's event went off first on a muddy relatively flat course (with the exception of a short and muddy hill about 800m from the end of each large loop). We were experiencing light drizzle at the time and it turned heavier as the afternoon progressed. The women's race of 4k involved one short loop of about 750m, followed by two loops of 1500m and then a short 250m run-in diversion towards the finish line. The field for each of the masters races witnessed significantly larger participation than for either of the intermediate events, with the women's race involving 154 runners from O/35 through to O/75. Our team of 4 intrepid athletes came in 13th in the O/35 team category and individually they were led home by Grainne Regan (62nd overall, 23rd in category) in a time of 16:35 (the race winner being St. Finbarrs' Martina Kiely running 14:23), who enjoyed a ding-dong sprint to the line with Donore's women's captain, Florence Curley. Next came Aine Kenny, not so far behind in 65th overall, 24th O/35, in 16:35, followed by Maria Kennedy (86th and 29th in 17:23) and Lisa Shine (123rd and 34th in 18:35). Eleven men from the club turned out for their unusual distance of 7k, involving the same short loop and finish and 4 longer loops. There was a huge field of 244 runners and they were led home by Mark McKinstry of North Belfast Harriers who was given the win in 21:19. First across the line, however, was Yared Derese of Carrick Aces, who finished in 3rd place last week in the Raheny 5 miler. However, it is possible that he was disqualified perhaps for reasons of eligibility. Both runners finished significantly ahead of the chasing group which included Rossa Hurley of Donore who was given 2nd place (21:53) in an excellent sprint finish. Our contingent was led home by Stephen Hurley who placed 28th overall (15th in his age category) in 23:39, followed by Ciaran Diviney (34th and 6th in 23:52) and Jason Kehoe who also had an excellent result (51st and 27th in 24:22). Jason was followed by the ever-dependable Peter O'Toole (60th and 31st in 24:41) and Ger Forde who worked his way through the field (63rd and 14th in his new age category in 24:45). Next came Joe McDermott who also enjoyed a stormer of a race (72nd and 35th in 25:09), not too far ahead of Rob Cross (79th and 12th in 25:20). Eddie Nugent also enjoyed a super race (127th and 15th in 26:28) ahead of a slightly under-the-weather Will Owens (130th and 45th in 26:35). Completing the picture were Gary Park (213th and 50th in 29:22) and Patrick Needham in his first outing of the year (220th and 52nd in 29:36). Stephen, Ciaran, Jason and Peter were the four scorers for the team who came in 8th out of 17 in the end. On Saturday morning in chilly but calm conditions the traditional BHAA Garda XC races (that may have been going for more than 30 years) took place on the hills around the magazine fort in the Phoenix Park. The course route is broadly familiar to club runners, particularly those from Crusaders as we train on them regularly. The frozen grass was crunchy underfoot in several places, leading to a slight deviation from the usual route, but not enough to make any significant difference. Once again, Niamh Allen stamped her authority on a 2-mile all women’s BHAA race, this time in a huge field of 252, the numbers swelled as usual by the Lord Mayor’s runners. The route involved 2 one mile laps and, because of the size of the field, the lead runners had to negotiate their way through a substantial number of back markers to get to the finish. Niamh had a great race, leading from early on and eventually coming home ahead of 2nd placed runner, Linda Byrne, by 12 seconds in a super time of 11:42 for the distance. Linda was herself 9 seconds ahead of the 3rd placed athlete and all 3 were nearly 2 minutes ahead of the rest of the field. All in all we had 7 runners in the race, with 3 in the top 10, including Serena Moloney who ran 14:10, followed by Sarah Lyons not so far behind in 9th (14:19). Next came Maeve Muldowney with an excellent 15th place (14:49), followed by Susan Walsh (22nd in 15:50 and 3rd F55). The contingent was completed by Mairead Cashman in her second event of the morning (following a parkrun) (47th in 18:29) and Maureen McGinley (59th in 19:32). The mixed 4-mile race also produced excellent results for the club. We had at least 20 runners in the event, with two taking podium spots. Surprisingly, perhaps, at 183 the field was smaller than that of the women’s two miler. The course involved 1 initial one mile lap (the same as the women’s and a route with which we are familiar), followed by two laps where the loop was extended to take it almost to the Acres Road before turning back onto to the flat and past the start line. At the end of the first lap Fearghal O’Hare was running alongside Eoin Healy, the eventual winner at the front of the race pursued by Michael Kiely, who was able to make up some ground on them through the second and briefly take the lead, only to have to settle for 2nd place (21:37) as Healy broke away towards the end and finishing with only a 6 second margin in 21:31. Fearghal came home a little further back in 3rd (22:01). Michael had clearly put behind him the difficulties he faced in the Raheny road race last week, whilst so did Michael O’Conor who had not enjoyed the BHAA Cherryfield XC a week earlier. Always in touch with a group of 3-4 runners, he stormed through in the last lap to finish in 7th place (23:03) ahead of Frank Halligan (9th in 23:13) and John Mulvihill (10th in 23:19) who both had excellent races all the same. Michael Wycherley also enjoyed the success of a good race, placing 14th and 2nd M45 in a time of 23:54, followed closely by Frank Hague (16th in 23:59) and by Joe Walsh, following his PB exploit in Raheny with a super 22nd place (2nd M40) in 24:26. Enda Currid was next (31st and 3rd M45 in 24:52), followed by Karl Walsh (36th in 25:28), Brian Carroll (58th in 27:27) and Tom Dunne (62nd in 27:42). Further down the field came David Timoney (71st in 28:30), followed by Brendan Glynn (75th in 28:43), Robbie Moore (85th in 29:38), Tony Hackett (92nd in 29:58), Michael McGovern (97th in 30:31), Karl Gohery (104th in 31:25) and Paul E. Kelly (166th in 40:47). We had some great results in the Athletics Ireland Indoor Games on Saturday. In the 60mH series one and two, Matt Behan won both heats in 7.97 and 8.02, whilst Shane Keane placed 1st in 7.08 in heat 4 of the first series of the 60m and 6th in 7.05 in heat 1 of the second series, whilst also going on to jump 6.69m and take 4th place in the men’s long jump. Andrew Mellon placed 2nd in the 400m, whilst placing 6th in 7.19 in heat 1 of the first series of the 60m and 1st in 7:06 in heat 2 of the second series, ahead of Nick Ennis who placed 2nd in 7.09. Nick also took 2nd place in heat 2 of the first series in a time of 7.21. He also placed 1st in the 200m in 22:47. Valentinos Goularas ran in heat 4 of the first series of the 60m, placing 5th in a time of 7.23. In the longer distance events Mary Horgan ran an excellent 2:13.09 to place 3rd in the 800m, whilst Kevin Woods also ran well to place 5th in the men's 800m in a time of 1:53.04. Then on Sunday there were two 10-mile races on offer, one in Dungarvan in Co. Waterford and the other in Trim. Whilst no Crusaders were detectable in Trim, we had at least 5 running in Dungarvan. Alban Coghlan was our first runner home in 25th place in a field of 2378 finishers. Alban ran the distance in an excellent 55:57, followed home by a delighted Dee Ni Chearbhaill (629th overall, 70th female finisher) in 73:54. Dee’s husband Sean of United Striders also ran the distance, with a slight stomach bug, and despite that, placing 94th in 60:23. Further down the field came Barry O'Neill (940th in 1:20:24), Ian Hennessy (2105th in 01:40:08) and Fiona Lane (2353rd overall, 1022nd female, in 01:58:35). Conditions on the largely flat one loop course would have been slightly warmer than on the previous day, and as dry, which reportedly made it almost perfect. One event that didn't take place over the weekend was Saturday's IMRA 8.7k race in Glencullen above Stepaside in the Dublin mountains. The presence of snow and ice on the course led to postponement of the challenging event with its 300m climb. In seeing this, we realise that we missed reporting on an event held by IMRA on 19 January in Howth. In a field of 136 runners on a relatively easy course of 6.2k and a climb of approx. 160m, Becky Quinn came home in 20th place overall in a time of 33:33 behind race winner Ruairi Long (30:06). Becky was 2nd female overall and 1st in her age category. There was a reasonable number of Crusaders in the parkruns on Saturday morning. As usual, we had some good results, particularly from some of our female athletes. On her birthday Rachael Yorke recorded a PB in placing 18th overall, first finisher in a time of 19:35 in St Anne’s. Rachael was joined in the race by Leo Lundy (245th in 26:54), whilst Katie Rogers ran 19:19 (another possible PB) in coming across the line in Poolbeg in 10th place overall, first female finisher. In the same event Tim Francony placed 3rd in 17:29, whilst Aine Kenny took 32nd place overall, 2nd female finisher in 21:18. The trio were followed by Luke Haran (37th in 21:34), Russell Murphy (62nd in 23:37), Sharon Woods (76th overall, 13th woman, in 24:20), Donna Barry (92nd overall, 17th woman, in 25:21), Ava Rose Clarke (96th overall, 20th woman, in 25:31), Neil Brown, coming back from injury (138th in 28:35), Ciara McElligott (159th overall, 48th female, in 30:56) and Don Anderton, tailwalking (188th in 45:31). Amy Brogan was also a first finisher this week in Porterstown. Amy ran 22:18 and placed 11th overall, followed by Donal Foley (41st in 24:57) and Kevin Flynn (168th in 38:31). Dominick Branigan, otherwise in training for the Rotterdam marathon, placed 4th in Bushy Park in a time of 19:38, whilst Luke Davis also placed 4th in Marlay in 18:40. Luke was followed home by Killian Barry (27th in 20:10) and Aisling O’Connor (499th overall, 164th woman, in 45:21). In Cabinteely, Fiona Shine made it onto the podium in 3rd place (40th overall) in a time of 23:35, followed by Gemma Nagle (98th overall, 21st woman, in 27:06), Joe Dunne (139th in 29:54) and Olwyn Dunne (142nd overall, 41st woman, in 29:58), both pacing the 30 minute runners, and Lisa Shine (153rd overall, 48th female finisher, in 31:07). Maria Pertl and Diarmuid Byrne ran in Poppintree with Maria placing 42nd overall (7th female) in 25:53 and Diarmuid 43rd in 25:54. On his travels to the Far East Tim O’Donnell took the time to run in New Zealand. In Queenstown in a field of 89 he took 9th place in 21:35. Mairead Cashman ran 29:37 in Brickfields to place 50th overall (14th female) before running in the BHAA XC, whilst Brian Scanlan placed 10th in 22:13 in Porterstown.
