The big decision this weekend for those of us wanting to run in quality races was which race to do. We had a choice of either the BHAA K Club 10K on Saturday morning or the Dunboyne 4 mile race organized by Dunboyne AC on the Sunday afternoon. Both are considered quality races with good pedigrees and are both regarded as PB potential, being held on fast and relatively flat courses. In Rob Cross’ case, he chose to run both, winning one outright and taking first place in his age category with a top 10 finish and PB in the other. The BHAA-organised K Club 10K attracted a huge field of nearly 430 finishers on a sunny Saturday morning. Recent challenges with a temperamental timing system were temporarily solved by having Myrunresults provide the chip-timing support and everything seemed to go off without a hitch. The after-race spread was, as always, magnificent, with a mixture of doughnuts, hot cross buns and pastries as well as sausages in baps, pasta and fruit on offer. The event didn’t disappoint on the PB front either. The race (which was accurately measured) involved a straightish run of about a mile to and from a two mile loop which was run twice. Because of the position of the start and finish this year, there was a little detour early on to ensure the correct distance was achieved. The race started off at a frenetic pace, with Rob Cross and Ciaran Diviney in the leading pack of more than 10 runners. As the race unfolded, the pack split and by the time the loop had been circled twice Rob emerged as the leader with only one other runner on his shoulder whom he managed to hold off to the end, winning by about 50m or so at the finish. Rob’s winning time was 32:41. Ciaran came home in 8th place, finishing in a PB time of 33:41 and, although Rob is in the same age category but had won the race, Ciaran took home the prize for winning that category. Ger Forde was next, with a huge 45 seconds PB improvement, placing 30th in 35:13 and not far behind came Frank Halligan, also with a PB time of 35:23 (33rd) and another top 50 position went to Michael O’Conor (36th in 35:30). In the top 100 came Karl Walsh (51st in 36:46), John McAuley, returning from injury (59th in 37:28), Joe Walsh, with his 2nd PB in seven days (68th in a PB time of 37:48) and Eddie Nugent, also with a PB time of 37:49 (70th). Among the remaining male runners (we had at least 18 Cru in the race) there were PBs for Brendan Glynn (243rd in 45:41) and Paul Kelly, who broke 60 mins for the first time (355th in 53:28). We had 3 Crusader women among 134 in the race, coming home behind women’s race winner Laura Shaughnessy with her second victory inside a week (she was the outright winner last Sunday of the Craughwell 10 mile race in Co. Galway). Dee Ni Chearbhaill was our first runner home (187th overall, 19th female, in what she describes as a post-pregnancy PB of 43:07). Dee was followed by Gill Earley (226th overall, 30th female, in 44:41) and Fiona Bane (283rd overall, 53rd female, in 47:28). On Sunday, on a sunny but not too warm afternoon, 10 of us headed to Dunboyne, for the 48th running of a super 4 mile race on a largely flat course (perhaps with a bit of a drag in the first mile, but nothing serious at all) and the only variable being the cool easterly wind which was quite strong in places, particularly along a major open road between miles 1 and 2. Interestingly, because the road between those points was so wide and although it had been closed to traffic, practically no one, except for a few of us in Crusaders, took the racing line, and instead dutifully stuck to the left hand carriageway. Quite strange! The race attracted a field of nearly 640 runners, all with hopes of PBs. In the event, 6 of our 10 runners came home with PB performances, a measure of the quality of the course. The overall race was won by Mick Clohisey, training for the London marathon, who apparently enjoyed a ding-dong battle throughout with Brian Maher, whom he beat by 9 seconds in the end. His trophy for his exploit weighed nearly as much as he does, and was certainly almost as big! The women’s race was won by Ciara Durkan from Catherina McKiernan and Kate O’Neill. Our contingent was led home, naturally, by Rob Cross who placed 8th in the race, winning his age category, in a super PB time of 20:33. James Cottle came next, also an age category winner and only about 20 seconds off a 2012 PB in 76th spot and a time of 24:52. James was using the race as preparation for the Milan marathon next weekend and took some confidence from a steady run. Grainne Regan followed with an excellent PB of 26:04, holding on to a more than decent time after starting out rather fast. Grainne placed 106th overall (21st woman) and led the Cru women’s team home. Lisa Shine was next, in a PB time of 27:26 (141st overall, 31st woman), followed by Emily Feighan, also with a PB time of 28:03 (156th overall, 37th woman). Geraldine Clements was our third scorer not too far behind, placing 170th overall (41st woman) in a time of 28:27 and our fourth was Olwyn Dunne who placed 182nd (47th woman) in a PB time of 28:41 and 3rd in her age category. The women’s team placed 6th overall among the club teams, with only 15 points separating 3rd from 6th place! Neil Brown was next in 233rd place (29:59) and Neil was followed by Mairin Shine (435th overall, 173rd woman) in a PB time of 35:45 and 4th in her age category. Completing the contingent was Paul Kelly, in his second race of the weekend (492nd in 37:20). The 4 men in the party came home in 9th place in the club competition. Also, mention should be made of the great Cru support out there as usual. Finally, the townsfolk of Dunboyne clearly made sure that they were not to be outdone by the K Club and produced a terrific spread for after the race. There were three results from last weekend which escaped our attention and which are now recorded. Federico Corradini, who is preparing for the Milan marathon next week, ran in the Milan half marathon alongside nearly 6,400 other runners in extremely warm conditions (exacerbated by a late morning start). Still Federico managed to take 138th place in a super time of 1:20:43. This will have given him much confidence for the marathon where he will run along with 8 other Crusaders. Joe Walsh and his wife Alma Hanevy of Donore Harriers decided to celebrate their first anniversary a month early (because of the London marathon for Joe) and return to the city where they were married last year. In cold but really ideal temperatures, they took on the New York Half marathon which enjoyed a field of more than 19,000 runners. Both marked the event with PBs, Joe coming in with a 4 second improvement to 1:22:13 (and 338th place), whilst Alma broke 1:30 for the first time, coming home in 728th place in a time of 1:27:53. Finally, Eoghan Kerins found time in Hawaii to run in the Big Island marathon around Hilo. On a course which involved quite a hilly first half, Eoghan finished in a time of 3:46:36. Perhaps, because of the unexpected and welcome sunshine of Saturday morning numbers were up generally in the parkruns. Among the 525 runners in Marlay we saw Alex Romano come home in 9th place in 18:07, followed by Killian Barry in 18th with a time of 19:14. Colm foley joined more than 220 runners in Griffeen Park in Lucan, taking 52nd spot in 23:35. Meawhile, in St Anne’s, Matt Cranley was placed 23rd in 20:02 and Colm Kernan, 66th, in 22:47. The field measured nearly 350. In Victoria Park in Glasgow Aidan Hudner placed 68th out of nearly 340 runners in a time of 21:16. Natasha Murray took on Tymon with nearly 120 other participants. Natasha placed 114th overall (50th female) in 37:45. In Shanganagh Gary Park continues to make his comeback, taking 12th place in a field of 155 and a time of 20:18. Neil Brown also took part, coming home in 71st place in 26:19. Mairead Cashman continues to favour Bushy Dublin, placing 83rd overall (31st female) among a field of 125 runners in a time of 29:06.Fiona Shine took advantage of a trip to the UK to run in Eastbourne, placing 44th overall (8th female) in a field of 314 runners and a time of 22:38. Finally, Cabinteely celebrated its second anniversary and Olwyn Dunne managed to get good Cru representation. Niall O’Connell did well to place 2nd in a field of 143 and a time of 19:34. Nina Holmes was also a second placed finisher in the women’s field, placing 14th overall in a time of 22:19. Mairin Shine, Orlaith de Burca and lisa Shine more or less came home together in 40th to 42nd women’s places (104th to 106th overall) and times one second apart from 32:16 to 32:18. Leo Lundy had the weekend off from ultra-running so he helped out by fulfilling the role of “lanterne rouge” (in Tour de France terms) and backmarker in the field. Also on Sunday (earlier in the day), we had at least one runner in the Port Tunnel run, missing out on the vitamin D! The race is a 10K through both bores of the tunnel, each of which is just under 5k in length. It’s quite a hilly course (as well as being slightly claustrophic and hot even in the winter months) as some may not realise that each bore of the tunnel falls in the middle and rises at each end. Our intrepid sole representative (perhaps there were more, it’s difficult to tell) was Emma O’Mahony who completed the event, along with nearly 1,700 other runners, in a time of 49:32 (371st overall and 36th female finisher). We start with Mullingar, which took place on Friday in damp and quite windy conditions (the general theme for the weekend in fact). At least 7 Crusaders took part in the newish event which is fast becoming popular as it’s held on a fast course with excellent local support and the post-race refreshments and goody bag etc are praiseworthy. Pat Quill, tapering for the Milan marathon, was our first runner home and, despite experiencing a few back niggles, was still able to record a 1:28 finish (83rd place in a field of nearly 1,270 participants). Pat was followed by Olwyn Dunne in the first of 3 events in which she participated over the holiday (Pat ran two himself). Olwyn placed 292nd overall, 29th woman finisher and 3rd in her age category, in a time of 1:40:53. Next came Aoife Clarke, in marathon training herself, running 1:43:54 (357th overall and 44th woman), followed by Carina Davidson (455th overall, 86th woman, in 1:47:28), Fiona Bane (491st overall, 91st woman, in 1:48:00), Darina Scully (513th overall, 101st woman) and Maria Pertl, who, like Fiona, also ran twice over the festive period (523rd overall, 105th woman, in 1:49:04). On the same day, Alex Romano placed 46th in a field of 614 runners in the Streets of Portlaoise 5K. Alex's time was 18:21. On Saturday, newcomer Tim Francony was another lone representative, this time in the Tralee half marathon. In a field of nearly 280 runners and in relatively dry and mild conditions, Tim placed 3rd in a great time of 1:21:25. The big race of the weekend was the St. Patrick’s festival 5K, organized by MSB. Because of the ongoing Luas works the course had to be changed yet again and as in past years it proved to be a challenge, with so many twists and turns and doubling back, to get an accurate 5k distance. The general consensus was that it measured 130m long (or anywhere between 25-40s added to our results, depending on finishing times), even though it is acknowledged that GPS can be notoriously tricky in built-up areas. Still, it didn’t detract from what is a really well-run and enjoyable event and, even so, we got a couple of PBs among the results, which involved a total field of 1,228 runners. There was rain in the air at the start but this gave way to sun by the end. Also, although we faced blustery conditions, particularly along the canal, they were much reduced from what we might have expected hours earlier. With the largest representation of any club, including MSB, at least 38 Crusaders (20 men and 18 women) turned out for the race, with the last to arrive to register, Irene Gorman, at 11:50 for a midday start. Irene, who has been working nights in a maternity hospital, confessed that she only woke up 40 minutes earlier and cycled hard to get to registration where the organisers gladly took her entry fee on the one hand whilst also saying on the other that she was likely to miss the start. In the event, Irene came bounding up to the front just in the nick of time, and, although her efforts to make the race may have had a bearing on her finishing time, she acquitted herself well, leading the Cru women home in the race. Our women’s team placed 3rd overall out of 26 (behind Raheny and Sli Cualann) with scoring from Irene who placed 106th overall (11th female finisher) in 19:30, Catherine Thornton (114th overall, 13th female, in 19:47), Grainne Regan (137th overall, 19th female in 20:10) and Dee Ni Chearbhaill (169th overall, 30th female, in 20:45). Lisa Shine was next, recording a PB time of 21:07 (181st overall, 35th female), despite nearly being taken out by a woman with a pushchair trying to cross the course at one point. Results are shown below, but there were other notable runs from the likes of Nina Holmes, returning from a long-term back injury (218th overall, 42nd female, in 21:44), Kate Murray (231st overall, 47th female, in in 22:09), who came 10th in her age category and Mairin Shine (521st overall, 190th female, in 27:29), who came 4th in hers. Top 100 finishes went also too Emer Kenny (251st overall, 57th female, in 22:24), Olwyn Dunne (267th overall, 63rd female, in 22:51), in her 3rd race of the weekend and 7th in her age category, Mary Fitzsimons (279th overall, 67th female, in 23:14), paced by brother Michael, Fiona Bane (288th overall, 71st female, in 23:19) and Orlaith de Burca (305th overall, 79th female, in 23:35) in her second event of the weekend. Our men’s team did equally as well, having 3 runners in the top 10 finishers overall and placing 3rd out of 19 (behind Raheny and DSD), with Rob Cross leading the way (7th individually in 15:58 and winning his age category) after having tucked in behind Karl Fahy (8th in the same time) and coming through at the end. The other two scorers were Michael Kiely who was just behind (9th in 16:02) and, further back, Frank Hague (57th in 18:13). Newcomer Daniel Lowe acquitted himself well with 67th place (18:26) and other top 100 finishes went to Eddie Nugent (78th in 18:46) and Neil Monahan (85th in 18:54). James Cottle was just outside the top 100, placing 103rd in 19:20 and winning his age category, after a steady start and a strong surge through the last 3K, and he was followed by David Killion (112th in 19:42), Pat Quill, recovering from his back issue in Mullingar, (128th in 19:50), Luke Haran (141st in 20:08) and just behind him came Tom Dunne (142nd in 20:12) to complete our placings in the top 150. Other notable performances came from newcomer Gian Piero Allerta, a native of Milan, who is joining 8 other Crusaders for the marathon there in 2 weeks’ time (168th in 20:44), from Paul Kelly who finished with a PB (670th in 28:25) and from the legendary John Fitzsimons (774th in 30:53), who, in his 80th year, still managed to place 2nd M70 (773rd in 30:53). Mention must be made once again of the fabulous support the club enjoyed from our clubmates who came out to cheer us along. What a difference it makes. We have to have the best supporters in the land! Thanks also to Susan Walsh for her invaluable race commentary. There is simply no one to rival her! On Sunday Leo Lundy and Kris Ryan took part in the first 6-hour challenge to be hosted in Ireland. It was held in Whiteabbey just north of Belfast on a 4.2 mile out and back course that bordered Belfast lough. 150 runners started in wet conditions which fortunately brightened up as the day progressed. Leo managed 8 laps for 33.6 miles and a 13th place finish (out of 28 who attempted the ultra) whilst Kris, because of a midweek incident where a car drove over her foot as she was on her way to training, significantly reined in her efforts but still managed 4 laps for 16.8 miles and a mid-pack finish (117th out of 161 participants). The reward for the effort was a pint of Guinness and a medal of a pint of Guinness, both being the same size. This will no doubt become a popular format. We had perhaps fewer participants in the parkruns than usual, but understandable because of the holiday period and numbers were down generally around the country. Maria Pertl placed 17th overall (3rd woman) in a time of 24:45 in Poppintree alongside 86 other runners, whilst Diarmuid Byrne, who is managing a slight leg injury as he prepares for the Vienna marathon with Maria, went (for him) for an easy run in Newcastle-upon-Tyne (533rd out of 636 participants in 32:35). With nearly 440 runners in Marlay, Mary Noelle Rohan was our sole entrant, placing 358th overall (124th woman) in 32:48. Olwyn Dunne continues to support fully the hilly Cabinteely run, by running in the event and placing 61st overall (23rd woman) in 29:55, warming up for the following day’s 5K. We had 4 runners in St. Anne’s in an event where Bernard Roe of Raheny was making a comeback from long term injury as first overall finisher. Denis Murphy placed 47th out of nearly 290 participants, in a time of 22:58. Colm Kernan was not far behind (51st in 23:07). Leo Lundy prepared for the following day’s ultra by placing 80th in 24:19 and Lorraine Fitzsimons also did a warm up run (225th overall, 87th female), coming home in 31:43. Orlaith de Burca took on Shanganagh, taking 85th place overall out of 136 in the field (18th woman) in a time of 28:23, whilst Emma O’Mahony paid a trip to Cork and ran in Ballincollig. Emma placed 47th overall in a field of 220, 2nd woman home, in a time of 23:53. Our exile in Scotland, Aidan Hudner, ran 21:56 to place 63rd in the 287-strong field in Glasgow. Finally, in Bushy Park, Mairead Cashman placed 58th overall, 10th woman, in a time of 28:29. The field measured 94 runners. Mullingar Half marathon Overall place Name Cat. We start with the classic Ballycotton. Some 24 of our clubmates descended on the small picturesque seaside village in Cork, several hopeful of finishing among the first 100 across the line (irrespective of gender) to win the traditional coveted tee shirt, and, indeed this was achieved by 7 of our athletes. On a windy, but otherwise dry and sunny day, in a race won for the first time by Mick Clohisey (49:20) from 5 times winner Sergiu Ciobanu (49:46), our first runner home, and winning his age category, was Rob Cross in 20th place (54:40), just in front of men’s captain Michael Kiely (21st in a PB time of 54:51). Other top 100 performances, which also included several PBs (as runners took advantage of the strong tailwind on the return), in the field just shy of 3,000 finishers, were those of Brendan Murphy (28th in 55:25), Michael O’Conor (48th in a PB of 57:41), Jason Kehoe (62nd in his first 10 miler in 58:26), Ger Forde, on Jason’s coat-tails (64th in 58:29) and Frank Halligan (73rd in a PB of 58:46). John Thuillier was just outside the top 100 in 117th place, but at least had the satisfaction of also recording a PB (1:00:31). Colm Kernan was using the race for London marathon preparation and finished in 237th in a time of 1:04:33 and Will Owens was also able to place in the top 250 (250th in 1:04:58). It was good to see Marius McNicholas (546th in 1:11:28) and Barry O’Neill (1,010th in 1:18:12) make a return to racing and John Fahy accompanied his wife Ruth around the course (1,560th in 1:26:37). The men’s team (of Rob, Michael and Brendan) placed 5th overall. After consecutively placing 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the previous three Ballycotton races, Borrisokane’s Siobhan O’Doherty made a return to winning ways in the women’s race. Adrienne Jordan was another of our runners to use the race as a warm-up for a marathon, this being in Manchester in 3 weeks’ time, and Adrienne placed 10th in the women’s race (251st overall), 3rd in her age category, in a time of 1:04:57. Adrienne led the team which included Grainne Regan (484th overall, 34th woman, in a PB time of 1:10:29) and Emer Kenny (777th overall, 79th woman, in 1:15:33) to 5th place, like the men. Among the 1,200 or so female finishers, there were also excellent performances from Fiona Bane (1,055th overall, 144th woman, in 1:19:49) and the trio of Orlaith de Burca, Fiona and Lisa Shine, who all got roughly the same time of 1:30:29 and placed 485th, 486th and 487th women finishers (1,875th, 1,876th and 1,877th overall). Mairead Cashman also made a welcome return to competitive running (2,283rd overall, 739th female finisher, in 1:37:13). It was also great to see that Laura Schwirz was back in Ballycotton, her first time in a 10 miler since a knee operation a couple of years back. Laura placed 561st overall (48th female finisher) in a time of 1:12:00, whilst her partner Brian Flannelly scrambled successfully to that all-important 100th place in 59:50. Nearer home, an hour outside Dublin in the depths of County Meath, 12 of us took part in two races organized by Bohermeen AC. As in Cork, we faced blustery conditions on the 2-lap clockwise course (reversed from 2 years ago and consequentially faster), with an increasing westerly wind. The first race was a 10K in which 3 of our number participated. In a race comprising 335 competitors, Mary Fitzsimons came home in 83rd place overall (18th woman) in a time of 48:04, whilst her sister Lorraine, running a 10K for the first time, placed 298th overall (166th woman) in 1:06:14. In between came Emma O’Mahony, in her first outing since a recent stress fracture to her foot (103rd overall, 32nd woman, in 49:24). Emma’s husband Barry, a relatively recent newcomer to the club, ran in the half marathon, and like all the rest of us who ran in this extremely rewarding race, is preparing for a Spring marathon. For him it’s Rotterdam and he derived significant confidence for the race in 4 weeks’ time from a PB run on Sunday, placing 29th in 1:20:20. He was preceded in the race, which was won by Balbriggan’s new Lithuanian member, Valdas Dopolskas, in 1:08:32, by Ian Kinsella, who is preparing for the Toronto marathon and recovering from a nasty fall in the mountains last week. Ian did well to place 24th in a time of 1:19:17. After Barry came two Milan marathoners: Joe McDermott, recently recovered from injury, in 32nd place (1:21:44) followed closely behind by Michael Maughan in a huge PB improvement of over 90s (39th in 1:22:27). Paul Dempsey, who is preparing for Limerick on the May bank holiday weekend, also recorded a PB with a time of 1:24:43 (58th place). Another runner preparing for Milan in 3 weeks’ time, James Cottle, came next in 77th place (1:26:59 and winning his age category), having run within himself at a steady pace, mostly alongside the 2nd placed woman and her pacer, and also picking off runners in the second half of the race. James was closely followed by Brian Leonard, following a similar strategy in his preparation for the London marathon (79th in 1:27:19), and the team, which came 2nd to Donore (the scorers being Ian, Barry, Joe and Michael), was completed by Phelim Murray (preparing for Connemara) who placed 168th in 1:32:42 and Alan Bermingham (training for London) who placed 180th in 1:33:44. Leo Lundy ran in the Larmer Tree Marathon in rural Dorset and Wiltshire on Sunday. A Peacock-themed event with more than 1000m of climb on a muddy quagmire of a course made for a tough day and naturally slower than normal (5:23:55). Still, it was good hill training for up and coming longer events. Next up is the Carrickfergus Ultra on St. Patrick's day. On Sunday Luke Horan joined nearly 250 other competitors to run in the Castleconnell 10K in Limerick and he placed 14th in a time of 43:01 There was a decent turnout of Crusaders in the parkruns on Saturday morning and we had one first finisher: on the hilly Knocknacarra course in Galway and steadily reeling in runners, Catherine Thornton took 2nd place overall, 1st woman finisher, in a time of 20:06. the field measured 105 runners. Leo Lundy warmed up for his Sunday marathon with an outing in Basingstoke, placing 205th out of nearly 530 runners in a time of 27:09. Darina Scully took on Malahide and, in a field of nearly 360 participants, she placed 51st overall (4th female) in 22:28. We had 3 runners in Marlay where more than 660 runners took part. Alex Romano placed 7th in 18:23 and he was followed by David Long (66th in 21:48) and Kate Murray (109th overall, 14th woman finisher, in 23:15). Three of our Ballycotton runners did a dress rehearsal for side-by-side finishing in Castle Demense. In a field of nearly 80 runners, Fiona Shine, Emer Kenny and Lisa Shine placed, respectively, 45th, 46th and 47th overall (17th, 18th and 19th women). All three were given the same time of 32:16. Mairin Shine stayed closer to home, taking part in Cabinteely where she placed 76th overall (29th female) out of 102 participants, in a time of 32:48. Lorraine Fitzsimons prepared for her 10k debut the following day, by joining Peter O'Toole and nearly 350 others in St. Anne's Raheny. Peter took 9th spot in 19:02 , whilst Lorraine came home in 238th overall (92nd woman) in 30:58. Another runner to race twice in the weekend was Orlaith de Burca who took on Shanganagh with Neil Brown. In a 135-strong field, Neil placed 50th in 23:54 and Orlaith, 54th (11th female), in 25:47. In the modest field of 31 runners in Athlone Dave Cuddy took 3rd place in a time of 21:25, whilst Mairead Cashman, another to run Ballycotton the following day, took 53rd spot overall (10th female) in Bushy Dublin in a time of 28:32. Finally, it was great to see Tom Fitzpatrick of Tallaght return to a competitive environment, leading the field of 140 runners home in Tymon in 15:59, whilst Sharon Woods brought her time for the distance back to meaningful levels with a 51st place finish overall (4th woman) in a time of 24:53. As an M50, John O’Loughlin distinguished himself with gold in the 400m (57:23) and silver in both the 60m (7:97) and the 200m (25:71), whilst Paul Francis, in the same age category, took bronze in the 400m (59:10). Geraldine Clements won silver in the 800m (2:46:64) and placed 4th in the 1500m (5:51:62) as a W45. Our other medallist was Liam Lyster who took bronze in both the M60 60m (8:80) and 200m (30:23), as well as taking 4th place in the shot put (10.3m). Our other athletes narrowly missed out on medals. They included Simon Everard who came home in 4th place in the M35 400m (54:54), Neil Monahan who finished 4th in the M40 400m (60:51) and Alan Sheehy who took 9th place in a tough M35 1500m (4:37:70). Also on Sunday we heard from Lisa, Fiona and Mairín Shine who travelled out to Garristown in North Dublin for the Windmill Run 5K, along with Paul Dempsey who ran the 10K there. This was a hilly course, but racing conditions were otherwise perfect, despite a large group of juvenile boys lining up about 10m in front of the start line, sprinting off at the gun and then gradually blowing up one by one to come to almost a complete standstill over the first 500m or so! Fiona led the women's race from gun to tape, to finish strongly in 1st place (4th place overall out of 185 runners) in a PB time of 20:10. Lisa ran most of the race in 3rd position, but came through with about 1km to go, to finish in 2nd place (7th overall) in a PB time, also, of 21:32. Finally, in the 5K, Mairín ran well to finish 1st woman over 50 (51st overall and 21st female finisher) in a time of 27:34. In a similar sized field of nearly 180 runners for the 10K, Limerick marathon-bound Paul Dempsey acquitted himself really well with 6th place in a PB time of 39:41, his first time breaking 40 minutes for the distance. Congratulations to all 4 runners who each got something out of the event! Our ultramarathoner, Leo Lundy, reports that he took on Back-to-Back marathons at the University of Limerick this weekend. The course was in and around the whole campus and followed large portions of the main Limerick Marathon. On Day 1 in reasonable weather conditions around 140 took on the event with about half that number down for the 2 days. With day 2 in mind, a reasonable first half of 1:55 on day 1 for Leo was reeled back significantly in the second half of the race and, eventually, a comfortable 4:25 was enough for 51st place out of the 140 starters. On Day 2 Met Eireann had a yellow weather warning in place with 110km winds predicted. This was added to by many heavy downpours in cold conditions. So, a tough day was completed in an even split for a 4:42 finish. On Saturday, the 2nd round of the IMRA winter league took place on Trooperstown Hill and the up and down 10.6k course involved a climb of some 380m. It was cold, but the rain held off. Among the 109 runners Warren Swords was the first Crusader home in 8th place in 45:41, some 4 minutes behind the winner, followed a few minutes later by Brian McGuckin (21st in 48:16) and by Anthony O’Reilly (19th in 51:06). Ian Kinsella took part on Sunday in the Debra Wicklow Mountains Challenge Half marathon. He reported that he was lying in 1st place up to mile 7, but then, because a flag was missing, he went the wrong way on one of the descents. As a result, he conceded 1st place and, in trying to catch up, slipped and smashed his knee on a rock. After being laid up on the side of the bog for a few minutes, trying to assess the damage, Ian limped down to the first aid car, got patched up and managed to scramble back about 10 of the 15 or so places that he had lost in the meantime, coming home in a creditable 6th place out of nearly 360 runners in a time of 1:42:23. Further afield on Sunday, one of our exiles, Rebecca Fleming, took part in the warm and sunny Malta half marathon, held on rolling terrain, coming home in a time of 1:47, whilst, in the “Semi Marathon” in Paris, another exile, Caroline Mehigan, took it more easily with 38,000 other runners (including Sean Hehir who ran 1:06:41) in contrasting conditions of continuous heavy rain to finish in 2:26. Lastly, here is a round-up of Saturday’s parkruns. We had solo runners in 5 of the 7 parkruns in which Crusaders participated. Yvonne Macauley made a foray to Belfast and ran in Ormeau Park, coming home in 8th place overall out of more than 250 runners and 2nd woman finisher in 19:25. Maria Pertl was third female finisher in Poppintree (39th overall, in a field of 212) in a time of 24:51.Fiona Bane continues to record improved times when she placed 51st overall (6th female finisher) with 22:52 in Malahide in a field of nearly 370 runners. On her birthday Orlaith de Burca ran 26:56 to place 75th overall (20th woman home) among the 160 participants in Shanganagh and Colm Foley placed 8th in a time of 23:31 among the 40 runners who ran in Killarney. In Marlay Park Killian Barry took 15th spot in 19:43 and he was followed by Edwina Quinlan, training for the Vienna marathon (63rd overall, 6th woman) in 22:04 and by Kate Murray who placed 78th overall (9th female finisher) in 22:51. The field was more than 380 strong. Finally, Lisa and Fiona Shine warmed up for the following day’s triumphal Windmill race with an easy run in Cabinteely. Among the nearly 150 runners, Lisa placed 121st overall (48th woman) in 33:30 and Fiona followed in just behind in 122nd place overall (49th female) in 33:31.
