On a weekend that included the infamous Barkley marathons in Tennessee (with only 15 successful finishers since the annual event was created in 1986) as well as the fiendishly tough World Cross Country championships in Aarhus in Denmark (which made for great watching), it was much quieter than usual for the club with only two road races of note on which to report. Coincidentally, there was a swapping of race distance between the two, with one having previously been a 10k race becoming a 4 miler and the other moving from a 4 mile race to a 10k. The first was on Saturday in St. Anne’s Park in Raheny and it was the BHAA combined 4 mile event involving 435 runners, including a significant contingent from the Lord Mayor’s 5-Alive initiative. Last year, the event had been a 10k. On a mild and windless day, we had just 6 club members in the 2 lap race with a reasonable quality field. First home for Crusaders was Michael Wycherley who took 16th place and 1st in his M45 age category in a time of 23:43. Michael was followed by Karl Walsh (27th in 24:47) and Robbie Moore (65th in 27:49). Neil Brown was next, in 88th spot, running 29:28, and he was followed by Kate Murray (92nd overall, 3rd F45) in 29:59. The contingent was completed by Paul E. Kelly, who crossed the line in 213th place in a time of 37:09. On Sunday, we also had only 6 runners in the 50th running of an annual road race in Dunboyne. This year, the event was changed from its usual 4 mile distance to that of 10k and the course combined the old 4 mile route along with the 5 miler organised by the BHAA in the same location. It was fast and attracted 733 participants, hopeful of PBs on a calm and dry day, perfect conditions for running. Italo Giancaterina once more made his mark with a powerful run to finish in 15th place in a time of 33:21 and he was followed by Peter O’Toole who came home in 37th place in a time of 35:55. Peter was followed by Joe McDermott (40th in 36:05), an excellent result for Joe, particularly considering he is coming off an Achilles injury. Dee Ni Chearbhaill was next in 191st place overall, 23rd female finisher, in a super time of 44:00 and Dee was followed by Olwyn Dunne (258th overall, 39th female and 3rd in her F50 age category, in 45:55). For a second day running, Paul E. Kelly completed the contingent (686th in 59:09) and the 4 men in the squad took 8th place in the team competition. Members will be interested to learn that Dee’s husband Sean Murphy who trains with the club, placed 43rd in an excellent 36:19. At the World Masters Indoor Athletics Championships in Torun, Poland during the week, Bob Lyne was a member of the three man bronze winning team in the 10k walk. Many congratulations to him. Numbers were as usual generally high in Saturday’s parkruns, but possibly Crusader participation was a little lower than normal. We had a few podium placings. Alban Coghlan was first finisher in Marlay Park in a time of 16:15. In the same event we had one of our spring marathoners flexing his fast muscles before Paris. Rory Goldsmith ran 18:20 for 5th place, followed by Luke Davis, celebrating his birthday with a parkrun (6th in 18:24). Mary Noelle Rohan also ran, placing 489th overall, 161st female, in 32:43. Other podium finishers were Kenan Furlong in Poolbeg where he took 2nd place in 19:07 and Brian Scanlan who did likewise in River Valley in a time of 18:56. Kenan was joined in Poolbeg by Lisa Shine (42nd overall, 8th female, in 22:27), Paul F. Kelly (78th in 24:35), Ava Rose Clarke (94th and 26th in 25:25), Orlaith de Burca (111th and 34th in 26:17), Cliodhna O’Reilly (121st and 41st in 26:47), Aoife Kelly (123rd and 42nd in 26:57) and Iseult Ni Chuinneagain (148th and 56th in 29:14). Barry O’Mahony was our sole representative in Cabinteely where he placed 5th in 21:06, whilst Rob Browne, in preparation for the Rotterdam marathon next weekend, ran 19:45 to place 15th. Ronan Moynihan took 12th spot in 18:26 in Malahide, whilst Sharon Woods placed 35th overall, 4th woman, in 24:09 in Tymon Park. Olwyn Dunne warmed up for Dunboyne by running in Avondale Forest (32nd and 9th in 27:25), whilst Diarmuid Byrne swapped places this week with his partner Maria Pertl to run in Tolka valley. Diarmuid placed 5th in 22:38. Our two Scottish exiles also ran on Saturday morning. Andrej Kujikis ran 20:05 along with 648 other runners to place 43rd, whilst Aidan Hudner ran again in Glasgow where in a field of 414 he placed 113th in a time of 22:44. Gillian Lyons placed 61st and 10th in 25:27 in Father Collins Park, whilst Colm Foley took 29th spot in 24:43 in Corkagh. Finally, junior runner Colman O’Flynn ran 23:20 to place 23rd in Porterstown. We start on Saturday, where we had at least 26 of our club members take part in the BHAA K club 10k race. There might have been a few PBs in the race, which is known for producing such outcomes. However, it has to be said that several of the runners reported that the usual looped course may have measured slightly short (by as much as 150m) which could account for any this year. Hopefully, the distance was accurate (unlike it seems the St Patrick’s Festival race on Monday where we have now heard that the start and finish gantry may have had to be moved on the morning of the race at the request of the Gardai and that the race probably did measure long after all). In any event, by all accounts, the K Club race, with its two 3km loops following a 2km run out and preceding the same 2km return to the finish, was hugely enjoyable and topped of by the usual fine spread in the clubhouse. In a huge field for the race of 490 runners, Italo Giancaterina came home in the same position that he occupied last Monday, 12th in a super time of 32:45. He was followed by Brendan Murphy who ran 33:12 for 15th and another top 50 place went to Ger Forde who ran 34:19 for 30th. There were other excellent results and top 100 placings for John McAuley (53rd in 35:32), Joe Walsh (55th in 35:39, not too far behind, Daniel Lowe with another stormer (64th in 36:08), Stephen O’Kennedy (67th in 36:23), John Fahy (72nd in 36:44), Karl Walsh (82nd in 37:40) and Andrea Talpo (96th in 38:23). It was a testimony to the quality of the field that 135 runners (one third of the field) broke 40 minutes for the race, among them Patrick Needham who ran 39:55 to place 131st. The remaining male runners from the club, nearly all of whom broke 50 minutes, were Tom Dunne (148th in 40:18), Tim O’Donnell (176th in 41:28), Eanna Farrell (189th in 41:59) with a likely PB, Brendan Glynn (199th in 42:35), Luke Haran (210th in 43:05), Robbie Moore (215th in 43:24), Tony Hackett (229th in 43:53), Neil Brown (304th in 47:48) and Paul E. Kelly (430th in 57:50). We had just 6 women in the contingent and they were led across the line by Maria Kennedy (276th overall and 46th woman finisher in 46:10). Maria was followed closely by Kate Murray (278th overall and 48th woman, in 46:22) and then by Sarah Lyons (289th and 53rd in 47:02), Mairead Cashman (410th overall in 55:05), Maureen McGinley (426th overall in 57:26) and Fiona Lane (466th overall in 1:03:13). Also, on Saturday, there was a noteworthy feat by Brian O’Kelly who took part in the East of Ireland Marathon series half marathon in Longwood, where he took the victory in a course record time of 1:10:01. Lastly, also on Saturday, several of our clubmates took to the mountains to run along the Wicklow Way in the IMRA-organised Maurice Mullins Half and Ultra. The “Half” does not mean it is a half marathon, but that is half the distance of the Ultra at 25.5km versus 51km for the Ultra. The former included a climb on relatively easy terrain of 971m, whilst the latter is described as being of extreme difficulty with a climb of 1,940m. We had two runners in the half. Warren words placed 8th in a field of 186 and a time of 1:56:21, whilst Brian McGuckin took 27th spot in 2:20:37. Warren took home the prize for 2nd M40 whilst Brian did likewise in the M50 age category. Then, in the Ultra, the plucky Becky Quinn joined 236 other runners including Donatas Jocius, to place 25th overall, 4th female and winner of her F40 age category in a time of 4:56:24. Donatas ran 6:06:30 to come home in 142nd place. On Sunday we had another race winner as Catherine Thornton took top spot (48th overall) in the field of nearly 300 participating in the 10th running of the Craughwell 10 mile road race in Co. Galway, organised by the local athletic club there (and famous, like the K Club, for its excellent spread to follow the event). In what is possibly Catherine’s first 10 mile race and which she nearly decided not to run because of a lingering head cold, the native Galway runner ran 1:07:05 on what was a hilly, and possibly marginally long, course. She took home an impressive trophy, which was of itself worth the effort. We had one runner in another 10 miler, down in Co Cork, in Mallow. In a race with more than 1,500 finishers, Barry O’Neill placed 621st in a time of 1:19:26. Then, on a blustery day in Wicklow, 5 of our members took part in the Wicklow Gaol Half, with its field of more than 750 runners. Luke Davis crossed the line first in 18th place in a PB time of 1:28:02, followed by Kenan Furlong, running outside the comfort zone of the parkrun environment for a change and running well (26th in 1:30:54), Damien Fitzgibbon (38th in 1:33:46), Dee Lawlor, marathon planning (39th in 1:33:48) right behind, along with another Spring marathoner, Triona Quill, who ran 1:40:45, to place 108th overall, 9th female finisher and winner of the F50 category. It was reported that there was a significant headwind running back into Wicklow Town towards the end on an extremely hilly and traffic-laden course (necessitating running up onto kerbs at times). Further afield, in Chicago, our American exile, Damien O’Brien, took part in the Shamrock Shuffle 8k, where he ran a PB time of 29:28 to place 259th in a field of 9,350. He reported that the winter has been long and tough and that finally it was good to get out and flex the muscles. Finally, we address the parkrun results which were, by and large, as usual quite noteworthy. Abroad, after her long distance efforts of last weekend, Kris Ryan placed first finisher, 18th overall, in Mudgeeraba in Australia, in a time of 23:09 and in a field of 159 participants, whilst in Chichester, in a field of 194, Michael Wycherley placed 2nd in a time of 18:57. Then, in Portobello in Edinburgh, our Scottish exile, Andrej Kujikis, ran 21:57 to place 45th in a field of 329 participants. Back home, first place finishes went to Orla Kennedy, back after a long spell, when she ran in Brickfields, placing 7th overall in a time of 21:23. Fiona Shine also placed first (14th overall) in Cabinteely in a time of 21:34. In the same event, David Carter took 4th place in 19:20. Then in Poolbeg, Caroline Meighan, back from her stint working in Paris, was first finisher in a time of 19:59 (12th overall), where she was joined by Zlatko Kulic (5th in 18:50), TJ Bourke (8th in 19:34), testing himself in his training for the Boston marathon in mid-April, David Timoney (33rd in 21:15), Zalan Kovacs (61st in 23:27) and Tony Owens (110th in 25:51). There was also a podium place for Lisa Shine in Glen River where she placed 32nd overall, 3rd female finisher, in 25:02. Just off the podium came Brian Carroll in Ballincollig where he placed 5th in 19:23, whilst Aoife Kelly placed 4th (13th overall) in Dungloe. Aoife was as usual joined by her husband, Paul, who placed 14th in the same time. Gillian Lyons ran 26:15 to place 8th female (44th overall) in Fairview, whilst Maria Pertl placed 32nd overall, 7th female finisher, in Tolka Valley, in a time of 28:08. Meanwhile, in Malahide, Ronan Moynihan placed 8th in a time of 18:19, whilst Jonathan Claridge also took 8th spot in St. Anne’s where he ran 18:30. BHAA K Club 10k (490) Overall place Name Cat. Many will recall that this race was cancelled last year because of snowy conditions. This year, mercifully, runners had only the blustery conditions to contend with on an otherwise reasonably mild day. Indeed, the wind behaved strangely around the winding Dublin city centre course, with its many turns, and on occasions runners were encountering the wind from different directions on the same street. It was an exciting race, won by Hiko Tonosa in 14:52 (having placed 2nd the day before in 14:34 in the Streets of Portlaoise 5k, the opening race of the KIA race series, where John Travers took a course record with the win) in a sprint with Efrem Gidey, the two quite far ahead of the field, whilst it was great to see Fionnuala McCormack making a strong and impactful return to local racing after the recent birth of her first child, and placing 10th overall in a field of nearly 1300 finishers. As with previous editions of this race, several of the runners reported that the course measured a little long (perhaps by as much as 80m), but GPS can play strange tricks on city courses with buildings blocking signals and there were also results reported which were closer to the mark. On balance, it was likely to be close enough to a true 5k, but the debate is endless! Because many of the runners had entries deferred from last year, it is also possible that some of the age category information may not have been updated and a few runners eligible for prizes may have missed out as a result. So, everyone should check their details on the MRR website to ensure that they were recorded correctly. First across the line for the club and running extremely strongly was Italo Giancaterina in 12th place in a time of 16:17, followed not too far behind by Ciaran Diviney in 21st (16:39) and winner of his M45 age category. Michael Kiely also had an excellent run to place 28th in 16:53, followed by other great performances from Joe O'Donohue (35th in 17:05), Joe McDermott (47th in 17:30) and Barry McGuire (50th in 17:33) to finish in the top 50. Indeed, Italo, Ciaran, Michael and Joe McDermott were our 4 scorers in the men’s team and they took 2nd place overall out of 22 entries. For once on the flat, Warren Swords was next in 53rd (17:36), followed by Michael Wycherley in his first race for a while (61st in 17:46) after lots of easy running over the past month or so. Top 100 or so places also went to John McAuley (67th in 17:56), Luke Davis (82nd in 18:26), Vinnie McGuinness (83rd in 18:26), Eddie Nugent (93rd in 18:39), Ronan Moynihan (96th in 18:42) and Karl Walsh (101st in 18:54). Top 150 places went to Zlatko Kulic (113th in 19:10), Michael Fitzsimons (115th in 19:21), Patrick Needham (119th in 19:27) and Tim O'Donnell (139th in 19:52). Crusader women also ran well with at least 14 in the race. They were led home by Isabelle Cairns (225th overall and 42nd female finisher) in a time of 21:34 and Isabelle was followed by Maria Kennedy (242nd and 47th and winner of her F35 age category in 21:58), Rebecca Fleming just behind (243rd and 48th in 21:54), and Olwyn Dunne (257th, 53rd and 3rd F50 in 22:14), with the four women scoring for the club and taking a respectable 7th place out of the 21 team entries. Also among the top 100 women, Emer Kenny was next (265th and 55th in 22:17), followed by Aoife Kelly (268th and 58th in the same time), Kate Murray (269th and 59th in 22:22), Lisa Shine (290th and 69th in 22:39) and Maria del Carmen Jimenez Campos (296th and 72nd in 22:50). A little further back came Fiona Bane who placed 419th and 122nd in 25:08. Well done to all our runners, whose results are listed below, as usual. Not so many, if any, PBs on the day, but the course is a tight one and the wind would not have helped. Also, one result that members may be interested in is that of Sean Murphy who trains with us and who placed 57th in 17:41 and whose RunHub team took the corporate team prize. At the weekend, we saw a succession of half marathon races starting off on Saturday with the Tralee Half. We had just one runner in the Co. Kerry race with its field of 277 participants. Maurice Kelter, in training for Rotterdam, placed 19th in a time of 1:28:04. Then, on Sunday we had participants in Balbriggan and Mullingar. The former, with its field of 145 runners, is likely to become notorious as a result of a video recording runners coming off the wrong exit of a roundabout in the early stages of the race. Indeed, the race winner, our Adam Flanagan who is also preparing for the Rotterdam marathon, was sent the wrong way twice on his journey to complete what turned out to be a 21.8km half! Another Rotterdam-bound runner, Rob Browne, who placed 7th, also experienced the same difficulty so that their respective times of 1:19:21 and 1:29:25 are potentially somewhat dodgy. Dee Ni Chearbhaill also ran in Balbriggan the same morning, competing in the more than 300-strong 10k. Dee nearly failed to make the start not realising the gun would go 15 minutes ahead of what she was expecting and still in the middle of her warm-up, but managed to take an excellent 2nd place (25th overall) in a time of 44:20 on an undulating and windy course. The next half took place in Mullingar, also on Sunday, where we saw some more spring marathoners compete. In a race where the top male finishers were Tomas Fitzpatrick and Sean Hehir, 5 seconds apart) and where the top 3 female finishers were only 24 seconds apart, there was a strong field of more than 1400. Rory Goldsmith, preparing for Paris, was our first Crusader home, running at marathon pace for the most part, and placing 77th in 1:28:39. He was followed by Kevin Lambe (170th in 1:35:14) and by John Lohan (210th in 1:37:09), who with his wife Tara Murphy (706th overall and 167th woman, in 1:53:40) is preparing for Connemara in mid-April too. Carina Davidson was next (575th and 115thin 1:50:24), followed by another Rotterdammer, Mari Hansen (712th and 171st in 1:53:59). The remaining participants were Cliodhna O’Reilly (1051st and 339 in 2:06:02), Katie McElroy, yet another bound for Rotterdam and who combined the race with her long run (1204th and 435th in 2:13:50), Maureen McGinley (1,313th and 510th in 2:23:43), Ciara McElligott (1,320th and 514th in 2:24:32) running together with Brian Langton (1,321st in 2:24:31). To compete the half marathon picture, we also had two runners in New York on Sunday. On a hilly course around Central Park Joe Walsh ran a PB time of 1:19:46 (the first time he has broken 1:20), whilst his wife Alma ran a strong 1:28:51, coming back from recent injury. Further afield, Kris Ryan ran a 23-mile PB when she came home 4th female at the Australian National 48hr championships in Canberra, covering a staggering 160 miles around a 400 metre track in truly hot conditions. Not only that, but Kris competed with a broken arm in a sling! Hats off to her. We had runners in 9 parkruns on Saturday and clearly the best results came in Poolbeg, where Sharon Woods was not only celebrating a milestone birthday and a new masters age category, but was also participating in her 100th parkrun. Lisa Shine was also taking part in her 150th. So, we had at least 14 Crusaders in the event, where the two first finishers were also Crusaders. Stephen Hurley took top spot in 18:25, whilst Fiona Shine finished in 13th place overall in a time of 21:40. Russell Murphy also joined in the fun, placing 29th in 24:10, followed by Ali May Hann (34th and 5th in 24:43), Ava Rose Clarke (38th and 6th in 25:43), Sharon Woods (61st and 15th in 27:22), Donna Barry (62nd and 16th in 27:23), Olwyn Dunne (81st and 27th in 28:43), Lisa Shine (82nd and 28th in 29:03), Paul E. Kelly (83rd in 29:14), Mari Hansen (88th and 33rd in 30:00), Don Anderton (105th in 32:48) and Aisling O’Connor (106th and 40th in 32:49). Ronan Moynihan placed 4th in 18:42 and Aoife Cowhie took 98th spot overall (20th female) in 24:52 in Malahide, whilst Colm Foley placed 33rd in 23:20 in Griffeen Park. Brian Scanlan took 6th place in 22:00 in River Valley, whilst Kevin Flynn placed 109th in 42:35 in Porterstown. Aoife and Paul F. Kelly ran together in Fairview, with Aoife taking 40th (and 11th) in 29:25, followed by Paul (44th in 29:31). Liam Lyster was our sole representative in Strokestown where he placed 8th in 28:11, whilst further afield Orlaith de Burca took part in a field of 71 in Jamaica Pond, Boston, Massachusetts, where she ran 29:03 to place 46th (and 12th). Finally, Sarah Lyons took the long break to head home to Aylesbury where she ran in Wendover Woods among 84 other participants. Sarah placed 28th overall, 5th woman, in 25:56. But we start with the calm of the masters national indoor championships in Athlone, where everyone from the club who competed came home with a medal of some description, mostly gold. Jonathan Miller was our most prodigious medal hauler, taking 3 in total, with a gold in the M35 200m in 23.99, gold in the 400m in 52.09 and silver in the 60m in 7.43. Not far behind him on the medal table were Simon Everard and John O’Loughlin, with Simon taking bronze in both the M35 400m (54.42) and 60m (7.64), whilst John took silver in the M50 200m (26.01) and gold in the 400m (57.50). We also had gold medallists in the modest fields of the 3000m walk, with Bob Lyne taking gold in the M50 category (18:30.57) and Lisa Shine, repeating her success in Leinster, taking gold in the F35 category (18:15.22). In terms of road racing, the blue riband event of the weekend was the Meath Spring Marathon organised by Bohermeen AC, celebrating its 50th year. The sold-out race has become a staple for spring marathoners and is a PB course, made significantly more challenging this year because of the weather. Given the incredibly strong westerly wind we experienced on large parts of the 2 lap course along with the hailstones and snow flurries just before the start in near freezing conditions, it is amazing how many PBs were recorded among the 24 or so Crusaders who took part, several of whom would have gleaned significant confident boosts ahead of their upcoming spring marathon efforts in Rotterdam, Paris and London, among others. On a less windy day, it is likely that the PBs would have been even better as we generally reckoned the wind added more than a minute to our times. It seems to be an accepted fact that there is no equality where the same headwind in places is a tailwind elsewhere. The course is largely flat, except for a couple of drags up and over the M3 motorway encountered on each lap, and is quite well supported for a country race. In a field of 1233 our first man home was Brendan Murphy who crossed the line in 6th place in a great time of 1:12:24. In a race won by Yared Dersese of Carrick Aces (on whom we’ve reported a few times this year, having taken 3rd in the Raheny 5 and then likely being disqualified for lack of eligibility in the national masters cross country even though he appeared to have won the race), our next runner home was Paul Dempsey (52nd in 1:19:36), followed by John Fahy (66th in 1:21:35). Barry McGuire was next (69th in a PB time of 1:21:55), pacing himself brilliantly after a really controlled start, along with Rory Goldsmith who did likewise (101st in a PB time of 1:23:45) in his preparations for Paris. James Cahill was next with a PB run (111th in 1:24:25), followed by Andrea Talpo (148th in 1:26:30) to whom James Cottle tried to hang on as he came past at the end of the first lap, but only managing to stay for about 3k as Andrea picked up the pace. James found himself in no man’s land on the 2nd lap as the field thinned out, making running into the wind challenging, particularly at the bottom end of the course. Patrick Needham, in 154th place, was another runner with a PB, running 1:27:02, coming in ahead of James who ran 1:27:58 for 171st place and winner of his M60 age category. He was followed by Catherine Thornton (193rd overall and 12th female finisher, behind race winner and Rotterdam-bound Caitriona Jennngs, in an excellent time of 1:28:46) who was paced towards the latter stages of the race by Dave Carter (196th in 1:28:43) and then came Kiera Roche who ran a super PB time of 1:29:00 to place 210th overall, 16th female finisher, and probably with more to come. Kiera was followed by Bob Cahill, coming back from injury (248th in 1:31:06), Cormac McGuire, another runner with a PB (283rd in 1:33:02) and Katie McElroy, yet another to improve well on her previous half marathon time (326th overall, 34th female, in 1:34:49). Jemma Lyons also recorded a great PB, with a time of 1:36:23 (383rd and 47th) and Jemma was followed by Triona Quill, recovering from a chest infection, who will have taken much satisfaction from her 1:40:05 (468th, 66th and 5th F50). Likewise, Olwyn Dunne had an excellent outing, placing 511th (72nd) and 7th F50 in 1:42:07. Next came Maria del Carmen Jimenez Campos, again a runner with a PB. Maria ran 1:46:39 to place 672nd and 124th, followed by Maria Esteban (786th and 172nd) in a PB time of 1:50:21 and Louise Dobbyn (787th and 173rd in 1:51:31), who was suffering from severe muscle tightness early on but managed courageously nonetheless to finish the race. The contingent was completed by Liz Nixon (791st and 176th) who ran 1:50:20 and Mary Dolan (938th and 241st) in 1:58:00. There was also a club team element to the race and both our men and women acquitted themselves extremely well. The scorers on the women’s team, led home by Catherine Thornton, were also Kiera Roche, Katie McElroy and Jemma Lyons, who took home the 3rd placed prize in a field of 21 club teams. Meanwhile, the men were competing in two competitions, one involving 4 runners and the other 6. With 4 to score, the team of Brendan Murphy, Paul Dempsey, John Fahy and Barry McGuire came home in 4th place in a competition involving 36 club teams. Then, in the Rennick Cup, our 6 scorers, comprising the top 4 male Crusaders listed above together with Rory Goldsmith and James Cahill, took 3rd place behind Donore and Clonliffe in a field of 23 club teams. Well done to all! We had runners in at least two other road races in Ireland over the weekend. On Saturday morning, in similar blustery conditions to Sunday (the wind being more northerly), but slightly less cold and without the showers, we had at least 6 runners take part in the Simon Home 5 miler in the Phoenix Park. On a course that started and finished on the Acres Road and taking a counter-clockwise direction up Chesterfield Avenue (into the wind), along the Ordnance Survey Road, down the Upper Glen, onto Military (and the Snake) and ultimately up the Khyber Pass (again into the wind), we had some excellent performances. There was a good turnout of nearly 1300 for the race and so it was a satisfying run for Maurice Kelter, a newcomer to our ranks and who is training for the Rotterdam marathon in early April, when he came home in a PB time of 31:52 for 27th place. This was no real surprise as he took a PB for 10k in marathon training earlier in the week, breaking 40 minutes for the first time! Behind Maurice came Brendan Glynn who managed 65th in a time of 35:16. Next to finish was Paul Kelly, in a PB time of 36:51 9109th) and sandwiched between Paul and his wife Aoife (who placed 178th overall, 23rd female finisher, in 39:12) came William Ralph, another newcomer to the club, who took 143rd place in what is likely to be a PB time of 38:16. Lastly, Mary Fitzsimons was guided home by brother Michael up the Khyber Pass, finishing in 182nd place overall, 24th female, in 39:36. On Sunday, Mairead Cashman took part in the Duhallow 10 mile road race, which saw similar conditions to those experienced in Co. Meath. In a race won by DSD’s Hiko Tonosa in 52:19 and, among 362 other runners, Mairead placed 273rd overall, 65th woman home, in a time of 1:30:17. There was also some racing going on in the mountains on Saturday morning. In the IMRA Maulin Winter race that took place in Wicklow, we had 5 runners. The race involved a 477m climb on an 8.8km course on moderate terrain. 92 hardy souls took on the challenge and our contingent was led across the line by Warren Swords in 6th place in a time of 47:27. Warren was followed by John McAuley in 9th in a time of 48:07. Next came the 2nd female finisher, Becky Quinn, winning her F40 age category in a time of 52:06 and placing 17th overall, and Becky was followed by the competing duo of Brian McGuckin and Michael Maughan. Michael would have the edge over Brian on the uphill elements, but Brian’s mastery of mountain descents eventually won the day. Brian, who had recorded, along with Warren and several others, a DNF in the previous race on Ticknock after taking a wrong turn, came home in 30th place in 57:40, with Michael in his first mountain race of the year, not too far behind in 31st (57:58). For the record, the finishers in last week’s Ticknock race (the results listed below) were our London exile, Niall McGeorge (43rd in 52:05) and Berndt Heim (99th in a field of 106, in a time of 1:07:15). Numbers for our members participating in parkruns on Saturday morning seemed a little down on previous weeks, possibly because people were deterred by the weather. Nevertheless, we had some noteworthy runs on which to report. On the day before her PB run in Bohermeen, Maria del Carmen Jimenez Campos was first finisher in Cabinteely. Placing 28th overall, Maria ran 24:11. Joe O’Donoghue was also a first finisher, in St. Anne’s (17:25), where he was joined by Luke Haran (25th in 21:02). Our Australian exile, Kris Ryan, was also a first finisher. In Mudgeeraba Kris placed 23rd overall in a field 296 and finishing in a time of 22:52. Elsewhere, Kate Murray placed 2nd (18th overall) in 23:53 in Lough Key, whilst Sarah Lyons headed up to Craigavon where she took 4th spot (42nd overall) in a time of 22:39. As usual, there was a decent showing in Poolbeg, where Kenan Furlong led our contingent home in 7th place (19:27). Kenan was followed by Ava Rose Clarke (71st and 18th in 25:04), Gillian Curran (86th and 23rd in 26:09), Mari Hansen (108th and 30th in 27:43), Maureen McGinley (113th and 33rd in 27:52) and Kate Healy (132nd and 43rd in 29:24). The weather wasn’t great, with high winds and rain in places, but we had some excellent results all the same. We also saw the last of the 3 races in this winter’s Women’s Meet and Train series, this race being held on the purpose-built cross-country course in Abbottstown on Sunday morning, thankfully before the heavy rain turned into snow, and our women did the club proud. We start with the results of the Leinster Senior and Masters Indoors in Abbottstown on Saturday afternoon. We had just 4 athletes taking part, but they came home with 3 medals. Nick Ennis took silver in the final of the senior 200m in a time of 22.89, after having made it into the final as a fastest loser by taking 2nd place in the heat in 23.10. In a minimal field and capitalising on experience gained from the league last summer, Lisa Shine took gold in the 3,000m walk in a time of 18:47.64. John O’Loughlin also took gold in the M50 400m in a time of 58.23. Finally, Donal Swift placed 4th in the M65 200m in 37.32. Well done to all. On Saturday, Kieran Martin trekked up north where, along with his twin brother Fergal, he took part in the Carlingford 10k. In a field of 357, Kieran managed 3rd place in a great time of 38:38, followed by Fergal in 4th place in a time of 39:08. Also, on Saturday morning, we had two runners who took part in 2 of the 3 races on offer on the Galway coast in Kinvara. On a hilly course in pretty tough windy and damp conditions Aine Kenny took 3rd place (41st overall, in a field of 519) in the half marathon surprising herself with a PB time of 1:30:15. Zlatko Kulic took on the marathon as a warm up for the Connemara Ultra in mid-April, coming home with a respectable time of 3:11:04 and 4th place in a field of 102 and describing the weather conditions for his race as brutal. On Sunday afternoon, during the heavy rain, we had several participate in the Lusk 4 mile road race. In a race won unsurprisingly by Mick Clohisey and Catherina McKiernan and a field of 344, Brian Scanlan ran 24:49 to place 38th, followed by Michael Fitzsimons (48th in 25:37) and his sisters Mary (177th and 40th in 31:04) and Lorraine (193rd and 47th in 31:30). One of the main highlights of the weekend was the last 2 mile race of the WM&T winter league. At time of writing, the official team placings were yet to be announced, but it has now been confirmed that in the top division the A team snatched gold from Sportsworld, whilst the B team moved up 2 places to 4th in their division and the C team also took gold in their division. The individual results were as follows: A team: Fiona Shine took 2nd, followed by Grainne Regan in 3rd, Sarah Lyons in 8th and Emer Kenny, 17th. B team: Olwyn Dunne placed 19th , followed by Geraldine Clements in 20th, Lisa Shine, 31st, Maria del Carmen Jimenez Campos, 37th, and Carina Davidson, who arrived late having had difficulty in locating the venue, 103rd. The C team was led home by Ciara Lynch in a super 7th place, followed by Anna Shine in 45th, Mairead Cashman, 87th, Michelle Geoghegan, 90th and Maureen McGinley, 95th. We also had two individuals competing, welcoming the return of Rebecca Fleming from Malta who placed 23rd who enjoyed every minute of the race and followed by Aisling Dilworth who placed 74th. The women will certainly have enjoyed their celebrations on Sunday evening. There was an IMRA race on Saturday in Ticknock, just outside of the city, involving a loop of Three Rock and Fairy Castle. It is likely that we had some runners in the 8.2km race over difficult terrain with a climb of 318m and the report will be updated once the results are published. As usual, we finish off with the results of Saturday morning’s parkruns. Crusader participation was not excessive this weekend, but we had a couple of podium finishes. Once again, Stephen Hurley was first finisher in Poolbeg in a time of 17:37. Sarah Lyons placed 16th overall and 2nd female in Fairview in a time of 24:16. In Tolka Valey, Cormac McGuire took 4th spot in 21:46, whilst Luke Davis placed 8th in Marlay in 18:57. There was also a top 10 finish for Louise Dobbyn who took 6th place (49th overall) in Poolbeg in 22:36. Joining Stephen and Louise in Poolbeg were Kenan Furlong who crossed the line in 8th place (19:15), followed by David Timoney (17th in 20:08), Luke Haran (24th in 20:50), Neil Brown (66th in 23:39), Ava Rose Clarke (80th and 15th in 24:46), Gemma Cooper (88th and 17th in 25:13), Gillian Curran (90th and 19th in 25:22), Maureen McGinley (125th and 36th in 27:43), Mari Hansen (151st and 48th in 29:46) and Fiona Bane tailwalking in 47:07 (201st and 76th). In River Valley, Brian Scanlan (11th in 22:56) was followed by Darina Scully (89th and 30th in 33:34) along with Maria Pertl (90th and 31st in 33:35). Ronan Moynihan placed 12th in Malahide in 19:23, whilst Colm Foley took 26th spot in Griffeen in a time of 22:35. Further afield, continuing their honeymoon, Aoife and Paul Kelly ran in Centennial Park in Sydney, Australia, with Paul placing 147th in 25:30 and Aoife, 163rd and 32nd in 26:10 in a field of 329. Finally, we had 5 runners in St. Anne’s. Joantashn Claridge led the contingent across the line in 12th place (18:53) and he was followed by Brian Kelleher (26th in 20:05), Jenny McCarthy (153rd and 27th in 24:20), Cliodhna O’Reilly (203rd and 45th in 25:35) and Lorraine Fitzsimons (398th and 153rd in 31:27).
