The highlight for the club over the weekend has undoubtedly got to be the National Road Relays that took place just outside St. Anne’s Park in Raheny on the traditional 1 mile loop there (largely on concrete roads!) on Sunday. We were able to field no fewer than 9 teams, 2 senior women’s, 1 senior men’s, 2 masters O/35 women’s, 3 O/35 men’s and, for the first time (a baptism of fire for all 3 debutants), a men’s O/50 team. The first event of the day, in calm and dry conditions, involved the O/35 women and this is where we saw the greatest success. The A team was led off by Niamh Boland who managed to survive (just) the elbowing and barging which apparently brought down a couple of Raheny athletes early on (although their trips may have been self-inflicted by all accounts), whilst the B involved Dee Ni Chearbhaill. Niamh’s stalwart effort on the 1 mile leg enabled Adrienne Jordan on the following 2 mile leg to pick up in 2nd place, and, despite being overhauled by international athlete, Letterkenny’s Annmarie McGlynn (in the first of two races she competed in on Sunday), Adrienne was herself able to overhaul Finn Valley, the team that had been in 1st place after the first leg. Despite being tracked down by Drogheda, Niamh Corby was able to hold onto second place behind the masters course record–breaking Letterkenny team, for the silver medal, with a 5 second cushion. The B team also acquitted itself well with Grainne Regan and Geraldine Clements, taking 12th place out of the 19 that competed, only 2 minutes behind the 2nd-placed Crusaders A team. The men’s masters’ race featured 25 O/35 club teams and our 1st and 3rd teams were separated by less than a minute. Brian Carroll, James Murphy and John McAuley took 12th place, whilst the all-Cork team of John Fahy, Niall O’Connell and Ger Forde took 18th, followed in 22nd place by the team of Alan Sheehy, Frank Hague and Niall McGeorge. The men’s O/50 team faced a lot of strong competition of largely younger composition and in the event placed 11th out of the 12 who competed. David Long ran a super first leg, but neither James Cottle on the 2nd leg, nor Denis Murphy on the 3rd were able to build further and take any of the runners ahead of them, largely finding themselves in no man’s land for much of the race as the O/35 and most of the O/50 teams were well ahead. At least they were able to fend off the team behind them that was hard on their heels for much of the 2nd leg. The two senior women’s teams also put in a solid effort in a highly competitive field, with the A team of Mary Horgan, Orla Kennedy and Catherine Thornton taking 11th spot, with only 20 seconds in total separating 7th from 12th place. Mary ran the third fastest 1st leg of the day among the women, only 1 second behind the two fastest who finished equally in 5:15. The B team of newcomer Lesley Ann Doughan, Yvonne Macauley and Niamh Aspell ran extremely well, with little reward ultimately, placing 16th out of 18, but importantly less than 1 minute behind the A squad. The 4 members of the men’s senior team had a somewhat frustrating race in that, by the time of the end of the 3rd and 4th legs, they were largely in no man’s land with no one to target and no one threatening them. Still they ran hard throughout and it was great to see them all in action, with Karl Fahy starting off proceedings, followed by Kevin Woods, the track runner finding himself on an unfamiliar surface, Rob Cross and, finally, anchor leg, Michael Kiely. Among 27 club teams, they ran well to finish in 11th place. So much was happening on Sunday. For the second race of the Women’s Meet and Train Summer league Waterstown Warriers Running Club stepped in at the last minute to host a 5k run in Waterstown Park, Palmerstown. On a surprisingly warm morning, runners enjoyed the lovely view across to Farmleigh and the Phoenix Park and the course, which followed the Waterstown Parkrun route, consisted of 2 loops of the lower part of the Park with some deceptive inclines and quite a hill climb to the finish at the top of the Park. Numbers were down on the day compared to previous races. However, this was unsurprising given the number of races taking place at home and abroad on the day. The results from the 2nd race are as follows: Kate Murray was our first runner home and she took 15th spot in 22:25. Niamh Quinn was next in 26th in a time of 23:45, followed by Carina Davidson (28th in 23:56), both runners using the event as a warm up for the Virgin Media Night Run later the same day. In her first time running in the League, Keira Gleeson placed 29th in 23:58 and the remaining finishers among our 7 intrepid runners were Rhona McGrath (40th in 25:52) and Mairead Cashman (48th in 27:31). On Saturday, Leo Lundy and Kris Ryan headed to the Longford Festival of Running held around the Ray Flynn mile along the canal in Longford town. Around 700 runners ran on day 1 in a 10K, half, full marathon and 53K ultra. As a result of incidents that had put a halt to their progress over the past couple of week, Kris and Leo chose the ultra and decided to run this as a training run for major events coming up in the summer. In good running conditions they started steadily, coming through half marathon well under 2 hours, with Kris even for a brief moment leading the female event. Leo, however, realising it was a 2 day event, slowed down and managed a 4:22 marathon, 5:22 50K and finished in 5:41:32 for 17th place out of 27 finishers. On the other hand, Kris pushed on and managed a 3:55 marathon and 4:45 50K finishing in 5:05:40 for 3rd female finisher and 9th overall. On Day 2, about 70 runners took part in a marathon and half marathon running in the opposite direction to Saturday’s events. This was always going to be a “sufferfest” and Kris managed it best by finishing at marathon distance in 4:24 and 3rd woman home again. Leo struggled a little and finished in 5:10 (results pending). On Saturday morning, Neil Brown and Mairin Shine took part in the challenging Roundwood 10K. In a field of 164 runners, Neil placed 55th in a time of 52:03, whilst Mairin came home in 103rd place overall (39th female finisher) in 1:00:23. We had several runners in Connemara on Sunday, participating in the half, the marathon and the ultra and there were some excellent results. Olwyn Dunne had a successful day in the ultra, with a 1st place finish in her age category, 7th woman and 45th overall out of 187 finishers in a respectable time of 5:59:11. Pat Quill and Phelim Murray took on the marathon, with Pat (3 weeks after the Milan marathon) taking 10th place in 3:07:01 and Phelim placing 212th in a field of 572 finishers and a time of 4:02:02. Finally, we had at least 3 runners in the half marathon. Killian Barry took 50th spot in a field exceeding 1,150 runners and a time of 1:33:56. Caitriona Joyce had a super day, taking 3rd place in the women’s race and 71st overall in a time of 1:39:10. Finally, Sarah Lyons came home in 487th place overall, 126th woman, in 2:04:03. For the record, Joe Dunne paced in the Wexford half marathon on Sunday, finishing in 1:51:33. Darina Scully and Maria Pertl were our only participants in the 8,000-strong Vienna marathon, most of the Cru who went over there for the weekend having opted for the half. In chilly but sunny weather and in picturesque surroundings, Maria, who is nearly 5 months pregnant, ran a super time of 4:07:36, whilst Darina, in her first marathon, also clocked a great time of 4:07:59. Both runners ran together for much of the race. Meanwhile, in the half, Luke Haran ran 1:34:53, followed by Aoife Clarke who made it round in 1:43:43, Russell Murphy (1:51:22) and Fiona Bane (1:58:04). In mounting temperatures in London on Sunday, and in a race which saw the women’s-only marathon world record broken by Mary Keitany (1st and 2nd places going to 2 of only 3 women to have broken 2:18, the 3rd being Paula Radcliffe), we had some outstanding results. In a field of 40,000 runners, nearly all our runners got PBs, including Ciaran Diviney who was running his 2nd marathon of the year after Tokyo in February. Ciaran completed the course in a PB time of 2:35:35, dropping less than a minute in the second half from his first half time. Joe Walsh also had pretty much a similar metronomic race, just coming in under 3 hours in 2:59:41. Colm Kernan was next with a huge PB improvement in excess of 10 minutes (3:01:18), whilst Brian Leonard was able to knock a few seconds off his previous PB recorded in Rotterdam last year (3:01:39). Despite some disjointed training in the last few weeks, Alan Bermingham was able to come home inside of 3:30 with a great PB time of 3:24:20. Finally, Liam O’Brien, was also able to break 3:30 for the first time with a PB of 3:26:21. On Sunday evening, at least 14 of our clubmates participated in the Virgin Media Night Run, a 10K race that took place in the Docklands, winding its way round and extending to Irishtown and the Point at one end and O’Connell Street at the other, involving nearly 5,000 runners and walkers. In a race won in 31:38 by Freddie Sittuk who looks to have returned to the country for the Summer, Brian O’Kelly, lately having completed the Rotterdam marathon, demonstrated residual aerobic endurance by taking 4th place in 33:52. James Moran was next home in 12th place (35:39) and other runners to break 40 minutes were Jim Stagg (36th in 37:14) and Anthony O’Rourke (61st in 38:32). Two runners came in almost side by side: Ali Onur Uyar placed 128th in 40:30 and Zlatko Kulic ran a strong 40:31(129th). They were followed by Sean Smith (182nd in 41:25), Gian Piero Allerta, another recent marathoner (from Milan), who recorded a PB of 42:06 (222nd), Alan Tierney (634th in 46:31), Carina Davidson (863rd overall, 83rd woman, in 47:55) and Niamh Quinn (940th overall, 97th woman, in 48:27), both runners in their 2nd event of the day. Our contingent was completed by Paul Kelly (4,030th in 1:03:21) who paced Ciara McElligott (4,033rd overall, 1,467th woman, in a PB time of 1:03:23) and, finally, Stephen Mulligan (4,488th in 1:07:54). The weekend’s parkruns also saw some success for the club. In a field of 113 runners, Katie McElroy demonstrated improving form, by coming home as first woman finisher in Poppintree. Katie’s time was 20:40 (a PB?) and she placed 8th overall. Alban Coghlan placed 2nd in the field of more than 550 runners in Marlay and a time of 16:59. Alban was followed by Eddie Nugent 96th in 18:18). Emma Flynn placed second woman finisher in a time of 21:28 in Cabinteely There were 120 runners in the event. Suzanne Martin made a rare appearance in Shanganagh, placing 42nd overall (out of nearly 150 participants) and 6th female finisher, in a time of 24:31. We had 3 runners in St. Anne’s: Among more than 370 runners, Matt Cranley took 10th spot in 19:38, followed by Geraldine Clements (137th overall, 30th female finisher, in 26:04) and Denis Murphy (209th in 28:42), both athletes limbering up for the following day’s national road relays. Natasha Murray ran in Tymon, placing 152nd overall, out of nearly 160 runners, in a time of 36:55 and, lastly, in the 272-strong field in Ballincollig, Lisa Shine placed 122nd overall, 29th female finisher, in 27:36. Many congratulations to all who raced over the weekend (and there were a lot of us)! Connemara half marathon Overall place Name Cat. We had some good running in the parkruns, but also some good returns among the 8 who took part in the 10 miler. We start with a postscript to last weekend's National 10k championships. After much analysis, on top of our individual medals last weekend we also recorded a team podium place. Our O/35 team of Rob Cross, Ciaran Diviney and Ian Kinsella managed to win the silver medal behind Raheny, but ahead of North Sligo. The differences between 1st and second was about 2 minutes, but between 2nd and 3rd it was 14 seconds (based on guntime). We had two other teams in the race. Our O/50 team placed 5th and our senior women's team placed 11th. Congratulations to all. The 10 mile race took place on a twisting course in Raheny in mild but dry conditions with a field a little over 400. The race was won by Rathfarnham’s Paul Stephenson in 52:08, pushed all the way by Raheny’s Mark Kirwan. The first Crusader across the line was Bob Cahill who ran 1:02:18 to place 39th overall and 10th in a strong M40 age category. David Long was next, placing 56th overall and taking the silver medal in the M50 category with a super time of 1:04:56 and he was followed by another M50, Robbie Moore, in 119th place (1:11:54). Kate Murray was our first woman home, placing 159th overall, 25th woman finisher and 8th in her F40 category, with a time of 1:15:17, and Kate was followed by Olwyn Dunne who placed 185th overall, 36th woman, but, more importantly, first in her F50 age category in a time of 1:17:14. Kris Ryan was next in 220th place overall (53rd woman) in 1:20:26, followed immediately by Carina Davidson (221st overall, 54th woman, with the same time) and then by Fiona Bane (250th overall, 68th woman) in 1:24:00. Congratulations to all. On Thursday evening, Tomas Mahony took part in the Butlerstown 4 mile race in Co. Waterford, placing 48th out of more than 270 runners in a time of 25:34 and in a race where the course record was broken by Raheny’s Conor Dooney in a time of 19:23. As mentioned, there was a fairly significant Cru turnout in the parkruns on Saturday all over the country. We had first finishers in two of the events: Grainne Regan placed 9th overall (1st woman finisher) in the 112-strong field in Ardgillan in a time of 21:53, whilst Darina Scully was also a first finisher in Bushy Dublin. Darina ran 22:31 and finished 11th overall in a field of 94 runners. Mairead Cashman also participated there, placing 41st overall, 13th woman, in 28:02. There were also some near misses. Alban Coghlan came home in 3rd place out of nearly 540 runners in Marlay. Alban’s time was 16:52 and he was followed by Eddie Nugent who placed 13th in 18:44. Fiona Bane took 2nd female place in the 114-strong Enniskillen parkrun, placing 28th overall in a time of 23:44, whilst Brian Carroll ran in Ballincollig and took 4th spot in a time of 18:16. The field comprised 330 runners. Emma O’Mahony also took part there, placing 73rd overall (9th woman) in 23:28. In Father Collins, father and daughter, John and Lorraine Fitzsimons, acquitted themselves well, with John taking 47th place in 28:09 and Lorraine, 55th overall (14th woman) in 30:19. There were 78 participants in the run. Still recovering from a fall in the previous weekend’s ultra, Leo Lundy, took 45th place in Oranmore with a time of 24:18 alongside nearly 150 participants. Ciaran Smyth joined 350 other runners in Portrush and took 10th spot in a time of 23:25, whilst Denis Murphy placed 7th in Ballina in a time of 21:14, followed by nearly 100 runners in his wake. Mairin Shine ran in Cabinteely with 112 other participants, placing 70th overall, 19th woman, in 28:50, whilst Sharon Woods ran in Malahide, placing 87th overall, 9th woman, in 23:32. Finally, we had 4 participants in St Anne’s (in an event organised by Olwyn Dunne as guest race director). Among 333 participants, Matt Cranley led the contingent home in 21st place (19:54), followed by Colm Kernan (77th in 22:51) in a blow out before the London marathon next week. Emer Kenny was next in 182nd overall, 40th woman home, in 27:07, whilst Max Dunne did his filial duty and mopped up the field in 331st place (50:34). Butlerstown 4 mile race Overall place Name Cat. It was an excellent weekend of running for club members, mostly in sunshine, in Ireland, the UK and the Netherlands. We start with the results of the national 10K championships which were run as usual in conjunction with the great Ireland Run. Numbers were vast (mention of 15,000 participants across the various races) and this year the organisers had included a 5k race and a junior event. Parking and traffic were, therefore, disrupted on Sunday for the whole morning. In a race which didn’t see this year an influx of East Africans, but instead was graced by the traditional competition between teams from England and Ireland, we saw Mark Christie win the men’s race (with Mick Clohisey behind an Englishman in 3rd) and Gemma Steel of England winning the separate women’s race (which went off 20 minutes before the elite men and the “masses”). We had hoped to see Fionnualla McCormack run, but, unfortunately, she developed a last minute injury and so we were deprived of a dual Irish individual victory (although it appears that Ireland enjoyed team victories for both men and women). At this stage club team results have yet to appear and, when they do, we will update the report. In the women’s race, Caitriona Joyce, making a rare competitive foray, led the Cru home, taking 30th place (399th overall) in a time of 42:09. Caitriona was followed, on what is an extremely challenging course (and quite windy at times) with all the hills of the Phoenix Park (the Snake, the Upper Glen Road and the Furry Glen), concentrated in the second half following a descent of the Khyber Pass, by Nina Holmes (78th woman, 618th overall) in 44:45. Next came Olwyn Dunne (120th woman, 6th in her age category and 786th overall) in 46:22, followed by Rachel Yorke (160th woman, 939th overall, in 47:37), Carina Davidson (167th woman, 954th overall, in 47:64), Louise Yorke (505th woman, 1,893rd overall, in 53:56) and Mairead Cashman (694th woman, 3,034th overall, in 56:30). Along with the 7 Cru women in the race, we had 15 men, at least 3 of whom surprisingly recorded PBs. Also, Rob Cross and James Cottle ended up with gold medals in their respective age categories. Rob, in fact, was the first Crusader home, finishing in 19th place in a super time of 32:30. He was followed by Ciaran Diviney in 46th (6th in the same age group) in his 3rd fastest 10K (33:53) and by Ian Kinsella, the 3rd Crusader in the top 100 (94th in 35:40). Peter O’Toole was next in 106th with a PB time of 36:10, followed by Jim Stagg who also recorded a PB (128th in 36:40). James was next in 225th place in a time of 39:12, exploiting residual aerobic endurance after last week’s marathon. James spotted nearly all his competition for the age category early on and enjoyed some leap frogging with Eugene Doherty of SBH in the first 3K, before managing to break away and finishing with a decent 40 second margin over the second-placed runner, Martin Kearney of GCH. Tom Clarke came next in 251st place (39:50), followed by David Long (262nd in 39:56), who, together with both Robbie Moore (604th in 44:33) and James, was a member of the Cru M50 team. Luke Haran came next (379th in 41:52), followed by Philip Matthews (431st in 42:31) and Tony Owens (449th in 42:48), celebrating a tremendous backing of the winner of Saturday’s Grand National (One for Arthur) which carried the name of Tony’s late son. Stephen Mulligan was next home in 770th place (46:14), followed by Brendan Glynn (879th in 47:04) and, finally, the contingent was completed by Paul Kelly with yet another PB for him (2,332nd in 56:35). Zlatko Kulic was our only participant in the Great Ireland 5K, placing 19th in a time of 19:58. As usual, there was magnificent Cru support out on the race course making that difference for us all! We had 3 runners in the Rotterdam marathon on Sunday, each coming home in under 3 hours. First was Brian O’Kelly who had enjoyed little running recently owing to a calf injury. So, his result of 2:43:52 (121st place) was especially surprising and welcome. In increasingly warm conditions on a relatively flat course (with a few bridges and underpasses, however), Frank Halligan was next, placing 184th in an excellent 2:48:14, despite clearly finding the 2nd half tough, and finally we saw Barry O’Mahony breaking 3 hours for the first time, taking 451st place in a PB time of 2:57:37. Barry’s 5 kilometer splits were truly good, rarely separated by more than 5-10 seconds all the way through. Also on Sunday, Leo Lundy took part in a 30.5 mile mini-ultra, Rachel's Ranscombe ramble in the UK. Despite falling badly after 800m from the start, Leo was able to continue and complete the course. The whole event took place in 25 degrees of glorious sunshine, but it did have a climb of more than 4,000 feet and leo duly completed the event in 7:21:50. On Saturday, once again Myrunresults supported the chiptiming of the fields in the two DCC road races in St. Anne’s Park, Raheny. There were more than 280 runners in the women’s 2 mile race (numbers bolstered by the Lord Mayor’s initiative). Orla Kennedy distinguished herself with a fine time of 11:33 and 5th place and Orla was followed some 20 seconds later by Irene Gorman (6th in 11:55). Niamh Aspell also demonstrated and reinforced the current depth of Cru women’s running by placing 8th in 12:06. Then came the ever-reliable runners: Lisa Shine (17th in 12:41), Dee Ni Chearbhaill (19th in 12:50 and 2nd in her age category), Geraldine Clements (24th in 13:19 and 4th in her age category), Emer Kenny (29th in 13:46) and Susan Walsh (35th in 14:12) and they were followed by Suzanne Collins making a welcome return (77th in 17:06). In the mixed 4 mile race we had surprisingly few participants (although perhaps understandable given the following day’s 10K). In a smallish field of 143 runners, Karl Walsh placed 11th in 22:24, followed by Robbie Moore, warming up for the 10K (50th in 27:09) and by Neil Brown with what he describes as a rare PB (78th in 29:33). A recent result which passed by with little attention, but all the same was something special, was the 9th place (first top 10 finish) for visually-impaired Donnacha McCarthy and his guide Dave Tilly, in only their 4th triathlon. Many of us will have seen them training together in Irishtown and it's great to see how well they have gelled. Finally, a decent smattering of Crusaders took to the parkruns on Saturday. The standout run came from Ilona McElroy, returning from injury, who placed first female finisher in Tymon. In a field of nearly 100 runners, Ilona ran 19:06 and she was 3rd overall. In similar sized fields in Poppintree and Cabinteely, Darina Scully placed respectively 8th overall (2nd female) in 21:52 and Emma Flynn also placed 2nd female (6th overall) in 21:50. Also, in Cabinteely, Mairin Shine placed 81st overall (40th female) in 31:16. Lorraine Fitzsimons was our sole runner in Father Collins (66th overall in a field of nearly 140, 22nd female, in 30:30), whilst Fiona Bane represented the club in Bushy Dublin, placing 39th among nearly 160 runners (5th female) in a time of 23:34. In preparation for his mini-ultra the following day, Leo Lundy placed 121st out of nearly 560 runners in Basingstoke. His time was 24:24, whilst Aidan Hudner placed 75th out of 285 runners in Glasgow, with a time of 22:04. Mary Noelle Rohan came home in 362nd place overall (127th female) in 31:00 in Marlay (the field was nearly 490). Finally, Colm Kernan, in his build up to the London marathon, ran 21:18 in Malahide, placing 44th in a field of more than 370 participants. Sandwiched between two rather hot days on Sunday we enjoyed good marathon running conditions, overcast following a rainstorm and temperatures between 11 and 16 degrees for most of the race, with just a gentle breeze to keep us cool at times. Also, we were able to fuel up the day before on the best pasta Milan had to offer selected by our able host for the weekend and Cru exile, Federico Corradini. With their local knowledge, he and Gian Piero Allerta were fantastic at making sure we found the expo and that we ate well, both before and after the race. The event itself was, as one might expect in Italy, slightly chaotic, but great fun and enjoyed a modest field of just over 5,300 finishers, alongside a significantly larger contingent of marathon relay runners who, thankfully, started half an hour after us. The course was as twisty and at times as narrow as we were expecting, with the odd 180 degree turn but it was certainly surprising to see how many corners were taken on the pavement by nearly every runner. Because of it, we all fully expected our Garmins to show that we had run a shorter distance than 42.2km, but in the event we all surprisingly came home with lengths varying of between 42.5km and 42.8km! It was not altogether flat, either, with a major hill at the start (repeated at the finish) and the odd underpass. Additionally, the route took us at times down cobbled streets following tram tracks which were quite tough on the feet and at one point we had to mount the pavement to go over a grass central reservation (something the Gardai would have vetoed immediately!). Despite the significant congestion at the start of the race with several collisions leading to quite a number of runners falling to the ground as participants weaved in and out, we all managed to get away safely, if somewhat slower than goal pace, following a shower of green, white and red confetti (the colours of the Italian flag) that were shot into the air at the gun by three cannons above the starting gantry. On a day when the winner of the race ran the fastest marathon ever on Italian soil, Joe McDermott and Federico led the Cru contingent for most of the way until at one point a runner stopped without warning in front of Joe and our runner's evasive action led to a probable strain in his calf muscle following which he had to slow down considerably. In the event, both ran PBs, with Federico improving his by over 90s to 2:53:46 and 118th place (having been in 219th place at halfway). Despite his injury, Joe was able to break 3 hours for the first time, coming home in 2:59:08 (224th). Next home was Pat Quill in another sub-3 hour performance (174th place with a time of 2:57:19 and 8th in his age category). The second best chip-time performance of the day went to Brian Rainey who was just getting over a head cold. He ran at times with Michael Maughan and both produced PB runs (Michael having agonizingly run only a few seconds over 3 hours last year in Rotterdam), with Brian coming home in 2:57:38 (183rd) and Michael, 2:57:55 (190th). Brian McGuckin also ran well to finish in 3:00:19 (258th), but has already enjoyed breaking 3 hours. James Cottle didn’t quite achieve his sub-3 goal, finishing in 3:04:44 (342nd), but had the major consolation of winning his age category by a decent margin (as with Pat, the only non-Italian in the first 10). James found the second half of the race quite tough with a niggling Achilles, but still managed to pick off over 130 runners in the second half. Jane Wallace also excelled herself. After having been in 1733rd place at halfway, Jane managed to come home in a super PB time (a 3 minute improvement) of 3:27:37 and placed 1,261st (overtaking more than 470 runners in the second half) and finishing in 71st in the women’s race (interestingly women made up only 10% of the field). Gian Piero was our final participant. Despite almost being unable to walk at the beginning of the week and having had to pull out of the Dunboyne 4-miler the previous Sunday because of cramping in his legs, Gian Piero acquitted himself well, placing 1,851st in a time of 3:38:30 (his time including a 2 minute detour to say hi to his invalided father en route). Meanwhile, in Madrid, another Cru contingent were clearly having an enjoyable time sampling the Spanish nightlife early on, to such an extent that not all managed to make it to the start line on Sunday of either the half marathon or the 5k that were staged there. Some of those that did start did manage to complete the course, but, it is suspected, with some difficulty! Those that appeared to have no trouble, however, included Shane Collins and Yvonne Macauley. In the half marathon in a field of nearly 15,500 participants, Shane took 58th spot with a great time of 1:16:59, whilst Yvonne placed 416th overall, 16th woman home, in a PB time of 1:25:39. Next came Michael Kiely (617th in 1:28:20), followed by John Mulvihill (1,872nd in 1:36:01) and Michael O’Conor (1,879th in the same time). We appeared to have only 2 runners in the 5K. Alan Sheehy placed 37th in a field of more than 1,600 runners in a time of 18:44, whilst Niall O’Connell took 74th place in a time of 20:30. Another strong performance over the weekend came from the Women’s Meet and Train teams competing in the first race of the summer league in Ballyboden, hosted by Bros Pearse. There were approx. 80 runners in the 4.7k race, which was won by Grainne Regan, who completed it in 19:03. Next came newcomer Rachel Yorke in 15th (21:25), followed by Carina Davidson (25th in 22:20). Another relative newcomer, Sarah Lyons, was next, in 30th place (22:50), followed by Rachel’s sister Louise who placed 56th in 25:31. Just behind Louise, Rhona McGrath was our sixth finisher (57th in 25:33) and the modest seven-woman contingent was completed by Mairead Cashman (68th in 26:34). A good solid start to the season! Over the weekend, Kris Ryan and Leo Lundy took part in the Ultrafest in Crawley in East Sussex. They chose the 24hr event which takes place each year around a 400m running track and attracts an international field. There were also 12hr and 6hr events. In hot and humid conditions during the day and under clear skies at night (extremely cold) 30 runners took on the 24 hours challenge. Leo had a strong start but after a bad patch after 50K was languishing in 18th place. Shaking it off, however, he made his way through the field and by 100K was in 9th place. He was still in 9th when he came through 100 miles before promptly retiring from the race. Interestingly, because of track etiquette, the inner lanes were prioritised for the faster runners who were mainly in the shorter events and also the elite GB Ultra team who were preparing for the upcoming world championships in Belfast. This meant that the entire race was run in Lanes 2 and 3, which effectively added 6 miles onto the total over the 100 miles. Kris had a strong first 50 miles before stomach problems meant that she spent a lot of time with the first aiders and away from the track. She did, however, tough it out for the full 24 hours, registering 82 miles. The sun brought out the parkrunners over the weekend and we had participants in no fewer than 10 of them. Fiona Bane distinguished herself with a first place finish in the women’s event in Poppintree, finishing 15th overall in a field of 134 and a time of 22:53. Maria Pertl and Darina Scully also took part, with both women coming in alongside each other in 78th and 79th places overall (34th and 35th women) in respective times of 29:29 and 29:30. In Marlay, in a field of more than 500, Alban Coghlan placed 2nd in 17:01 and he was followed by John McAuley (10th in 18:37), David Long (preparing for next weekend’s national 10K), 19th in 19:18, Kate Murray (88th overall, 10th woman, in 22:28) and Mary Noelle Rohan (314th overall, 90th woman, in 28:53). We had an equally decent turnout in St. Anne’s. In a field of nearly 400 runners, Matt Cranley placed 18th in 19:54, Colm Kernan, readying himself for London, took 35th in 21:16, the venerable John Fitzsimons showing that he still has it, was 227th in 28:36, followed by Denis Murphy (267th in 29:51) and Lorraine Fitzsimons (293rd overall, 97th woman, in 30:47). We had two runners in each of Cabinteely and Shanganagh. In the former, Lisa and Mairin Shine joined 119 other participants and placed overall respectively 98th and 99th (35th and 36th women) in the same time of 32:02. In the latter event, Neil Brown placed 23rd in 23:38 and Orlaith de Burca took 40th spot overall (6th woman) in 25:41 among a field of more than 140. Then, we had singletons in 5 parkruns. Olwyn Dunne was our sole representative in the 325-strong field in Malahide, taking 149th place overall (27th woman) in a time of 26:26, whilst in Tymon Natasha Murray placed 139th overall (66th female) out of 155 in a time of 37:33. Brian Langton came home in 21st place out of nearly 80 runners in Porterstown. His time was 24:20. Mairead Cashman continues to run in Bushy Dublin, taking 85th spot overall (25th female) in 28:35. The field measured 124. Lastly, in Ballincollig, John Fahy took 5th place out of 288 runners in a time of 19:10. Milan Marathon Overall place Name Cat.
