There were no medals this year, but a great deal of fun all the same, in the National Road Relays that were held as usual around a flat 1 mile course near St. Anne’s Park Raheny on Sunday afternoon. The road surface is mostly, if not entirely, concrete, which is extremely unforgiving on the legs and this fact had a bearing on determining the composition of one or two teams where runners ran on either the two mile or one mile legs (and for the senior men, one of the legs was three miles). The first two races involved the masters runners. We had two teams in each of the O/35 events, which also included O/50 teams, one of which ran for us in the men’s race. In the women’s event, involving 19 O/35 and 5 O/50 teams, the A team of Dee Ni Chearbhaill, Aine Kenny and last minute substitute women’s club captain Lisa Shine (replacing Niamh Corby who had injured her knee) acquitted themselves well in placing 9th, whilst the B team of Emer Kenny, Maria Kennedy and Maria del Carmen Jimenez Campos also ran well to place 14th, ahead of some clubs’ A teams. In calm conditions but increasingly cool temperatures, the next race involved the masters’ men, where in a substantial field of 31 O/35 teams, our men placed 7th and 21st, a truly noble effort by all,. The masters races involved a one mile leg, followed by a two mile leg, finishing with a one mile sprint to the finish(!). Our A team was made up of Peter O’Toole, Ciaran Diviney and Joe McDermott, whilst the B team involved Tim O’Donnell, John McAuley and Eddie Nugent on the anchor leg. Our O/50 men competed in the same race placing 12th out of the 14 teams entered, but importantly, also finishing ahead of two of the O/35 teams to boot. In a baptism of fire, Neil Brown was the first runner, handing over to veteran relay runner, Pat Quill, who handed over to a similar veteran, Robbie Moore, to bring the team home. The senior women’s race was next on the agenda, and where, such is the depth of women’s running in the club, we were able to field 3 teams in a field of 19. We never really expected a medal, despite Niamh Allen coming home 10 seconds ahead of the field for the A team on the first leg and the team duly finished in 5th place. It was a position that was probably to be expected because the gap at the end to a medal position was more than 40 seconds, which would have been challenging to bridge against such strong teams ahead of us. In a race of the same format as the masters events, our three woman team included Catherine Thornton on the longer leg and 800m runner Mary Horgan on the last one mile leg. It was a spirited effort in a quality field. Members will be interested to hear that Niamh's 5:02 time for the first leg was the fastest since Becky Quinn's 5:01 in 2014 when the Clonliffe team came 7th. In 2009 Hazel Murphy ran 5:03 to help her UCD team to victory. No other times have come close since Becky's and Niamh's. We also had a decent B team in the race involving Fiona Shine, Irene Gorman and Rachel Yorke who finished about 75 seconds behind the A team in 13th place, followed by a similarly good showing from the C team a further minute and a half or so back in 17th. This was a team made up of Serena Moloney, Rebecca Fleming and Sarah Lyons. The last race of the day involved the senior men. As with the senior women’s event, this was also a race of the highest quality with an excellent sprint finish between Raheny and Donore for the win. For the A team Shane Collins ran the first two mile leg, followed by Fearghal O’Hare on the 2nd, one mile, leg. Fearghal was followed by men’s club captain Michael Kiely for the 3 mile leg and the team was brought home by recent transferee Stephen O’Kennedy running two miles. The team finished an excellent 14th place, exactly halfway through the field of 28. Our B team also ran well to place 25th, led by Daniel Lowe and followed by Eanna Farrell, Tomas Bradley and Paul Reidy. Several of our 17 men and 15 women were running in the relays for the first time and all fully enjoyed the experience. There was also super support around the course from club members, which added to the occasion. This week’s races in fact kicked off on Wednesday evening in the mountains of Wicklow in Tiglin around the Devil’s Glen. This was an 8k race, the second in this year’s Leinster trail league, and involved a climb of some 283m on relatively easy terrain. In a field of 136, and a race won overall by Barry Minnock, Becky Quinn was back to winning ways, placing 18th overall and placing first woman in a time of 36:17. In the women’s race, Becky was followed by Laura Flannelly (48th and 4th in 39:28) and Kate Murray (89th and 13th in 44:56). Kate also placed 6th in her age category. The first Crusader across the line, however, once again, was Warren Swords (5th overall and 3rd M40) in a time of 32:04. Warren was followed by John McAuley (claiming 9th spot yet again in 33:24), Michael Maughan (32nd in 37:45), Anthony O’Reilly (37th in 38:22), Brian McGuckin (43rd in 39:01 and 5th M50), Ollie McGrath (60th in 40:38) and Berndt Heim (127th in 55:07). The following day saw the 128th running of the iconic Clonliffe 2 mile race that took runners on the roads around the Santry Demesne. In dry and mild conditions, perfect running weather, there were 143 athletes in the field and our 4-person contingent was led home by Philip Matthews who took 38th place in a time of 12:09. Philip was followed by Paul E. Kelly who crossed the line in 132nd place in a time of 17:21, with Gill Archbold (136th and 46th in 17:32) close behind and Iseult Ni Chuinneagain (137th and 48th in 17:42) just behind Gill. We then had two more road races on Sunday 28th April on which to report. Anthony O’Reilly was our sole representative in the Run with Catherina (McKiernan) 5k which took place in Catherina’s native Cavan and she naturally won the women’s race. In a field of 477, Anthony placed 28th in a time of 19:50. Late on Sunday, at least 11 Crusaders participated in the Dublin Night Run 10k that was held in the Docklands area of Dublin and winding its way variously through Ringsend, over the East Link toll bridge and also up beyond the Point towards the port tunnel. After her sterling effort in the National Road Relays during the afternoon, Catherine Thornton fulfilled a work commitment to run in the evening race, and despite approaching the race as a tempo run, surprised herself with an excellent 40:16 finish to place 68th overall in a field of nearly 3,800 runners and 2nd behind an American international athlete from Portland Oregon who ran 34:56. Catherine was also over 2 minutes ahead of the Clonliffe runner in 3rd place. A newcomer to the race report, Meghann Barber, was 10th in the women’s race (270th overall) in a time of 44:46, whilst Mairead Cashman ran 57:44 to place 1,725th and 340th. Donna Barry completed the women’s contingent, coming across the line in 2,887th place (836th woman) in 62:32. Our men were led home by Ollie McGrath (36th in 38:45), followed by Graham Crowley (44th in 39:01), Luke Davis (52nd in 39:12), Gian Piero Allerta (107th in 42:17), Dave Tuohy (149th in 42:48), Antonios Gkogkakis (238th in 44:28) and Jonathan Sykes (241st in 44:27). We had several runners participating in marathons on Sunday. It was good to hear that Leo Lundy ran his 100th road marathon on the flat course in Zurich around the lake. Leo ran 5:126. Meanwhile, in Hamburg on a rainy day, Darran Lovely recorded a PB with his time of 3:08:08. There were also super PBs for Paul Dempsey and James Cahill in London, with Paul running a 3 minute positive split but achieving a 5 minute improvement in 2:47:23, whilst James ran even splits to come home in 2:57:17. We also had two Crusaders, Mike O’Conor and Ger Forde, help to pace Declan Ryan, a Thurles visually impaired runner who trains with Crusaders, to a 2:45 time, in a bid to make the Tokyo Paralympic squad. Only time will tell, but it’s a quality result. This was Mike and Ger’s first experience of guiding a visually impaired runner and they did a magnificent job (each running a half marathon leg accompanying Declan and attached to him by a 50cm tether). Declan needed a guide or guides with Irish nationality and it was also critical that neither guide crossed the line ahead of the guided runner, who might otherwise be disqualified, as happened to Declan in the same race last year, something extremely hard to swallow after 42.2km of serious running! Another super effort on the day was recorded by Donnacha McCarthy, who, together with his guide, Dave Tilly, picked up a silver medal in the World Duathlon Championships in Pontevedra in Spain. Congrats to all! Participation in the weekend’s parkruns remains high. Aine Kenny was first finisher once again in Poolbeg (22nd overall) in 21:58, whilst we had podium finishes from Ronan Moynihan in Malahide (3rd in 18:42) and Kate Murray, our sole representative in Castletown (23rd and 2nd in 24:57). Olwyn Dunne was also on the podium in Avondale Forest, as our only runner, placing 21st and 2nd in 24:12. Joining Aine in Poolbeg were Sharon Woods (45th and 6th in 24:06), Ava Rose Clarke (65th and 12th in 25:04), Gillian Curran (79th and 18th in 25:45), Brendan Glynn (119th in 28:37), Ciara McElligott (143rd and 50th in 31:02), Maureen McGinley (148th and 54th in 31:28), Karla Woods (165th and 68th in 33;36) and Fiona Bane as tailwalker. Participating with Ronan in Malahide was the new mum Darina Scully who came home in 43:37 (285th and 136th). In London’s Bushy Park Anna and Lisa Shine placed 827th (241st) and 828th (242nd) in 29:24 and 29:27 in a huge field of 1,274 runners, whilst in Dublin’s Bushy Park, Mairead Cashman placed 197th (and 52nd) in 29:56. Further afield, Kris Ryan ran in another parkrun in Australia (Main Beach) where she placed 50th overall (8th woman) in 24:26 in a field of 323 participants. Mairin Shine ran in Gorey, taking 40th place (16th) in 41:08, whilst Aoife and Paul F. Kelly rain in St. Anne’s where Aoife placed 56th and 5th in 22:37 and Paul, 233rd in 28:06. Cathal Murphy was our only runner in Clonmel where he placed 23rd in 27:31, whilst Phelim Murray and Sarah Lyons ran in Fairview, where Phelim placed 10th in 23:09 and Sarah, 55th and 16th in 28:28. Gillian Lyons placed 32nd and 8th in Brickfields in a time of 29:46, whilst, finally, Maria Pertl and Diarmuid Byrne ran in Tolka Valley, where Maria placed 24th (10th) in 30:04 and Diarmuid, 25th in 30:05. Held entirely within the confines of St. Anne’s Park, a familiar hunting ground for many of us, the race had many twists and turns to keep it as such. Several of the runners reported that it was a tough outing as a consequence. However, 6 of the 11 athletes who represented the club in the championships came home with medals, both individual and team. Kieran Little won the race in style, despite intending to treat his first competitive outing of 2019 with a race number on as a tempo run. His margin of victory over the 2nd placed runner was a decent 17 seconds with his winning time of 54:17, but then came Italo Giancaterina for a well-earned 3rd place, running 54:40. In a field of 445, Daniel Lowe was our next runner across the line, taking 22nd place in 1:01:00 and having only decided late the evening before to run the race after finding out that late entries were being accepted on the morning. Daniel’s participation enabled our top 3 men possibly to take 2nd place in the team event (although this is subject to confirmation). Next came Ciarain Kelly (30th in 1:02:00), Patrick Needham (55th in 1:05:23) and Robbie Moore (135th in 1:12:55). The women did well too. Behind the surprise but well-deserving victor, Florence Curley of Donore, Aine Kenny took 5th place (100th overall) and 2nd F35, followed by Dee Ni Chearbhaill (150th overall, 17th woman, in 1:14:29) and Olwyn Dunne (172nd overall, 25th woman finisher, in 1:16:25) and 3rd F50. The three leading Crusader women won the O/35 women’s team gold with their sterling efforts. Liz Nixon (248th and 59th in 1:22:20) and Carina Davidson (276th overall and 72nd in 1:23:59) completed the contingent. Well done to all! The week of racing began, however, before Easter, with a trail race organised by IMRA on Wednesday evening down in Wicklow in the Glen of the Downs involving 171 runners. On a mild evening we had at least 7 athletes participating in the 7.15k run on relatively easy terrain, involving a climb of 200m. Warren Swords was first man home for the club, placing 5th overall and 2nd M40 in a time of 30:40, less than a minute behind the winner. Michael Maughan ran an excellent race to place 37th in 35:38, with Brian McGuckin placing 48th and 6th M50 in 36:42. Next came Gavan Doherty, finding his competitive legs again, and placing 49th in 37:29 and he was followed by Laura Flannelly (66th overall, 5th woman, in 38:02). Making her debut in IMRA racing, Dorothy Maguire completed the contingent, taking 91st spot overall (10th woman) in 41:13. As Gary Park reported earlier in the week, Colin Quirke should be congratulated on his new Crusaders record in the discus in La Jolla California on 13 April. Colin threw 60.02m to add nearly a metre to his previous best throw. His mark ranks him as 19th in Europe and only the 3rd Irishman to have thrown over 60m. Closer to home, Leo Lundy reported that over the Easter weekend he ran his 89th and 90th ultramarathons. These took place in London where the temperatures were scorching. it is good to see that Leo is finally back from injury. Finally, there were loads of results on which to report in the parkruns on Easter Saturday. As usual, we start with the first finishers of which there were several from the club and the podium places. Kieran Little headed a cast of thousands in Poolbeg where he ran 16:41. Likewise, Peter O’Toole was a first finisher in Waterworks, Belfast, running 17:26 ahead of a field of 271 runners whilst Catherine Thornton ran within her limits to place first finisher (5th overall) in Knocknacarra. A podium place went to Stephen Hurley in Poolbeg where he finished a close second to Kieran in 16:43 and they were followed by Donnacha McCarthy who was guided to 7th place in 19:07. Donnacha was followed by Zlatko Kulic (11th in 20:20), Ava Rose Clarke (72nd and 18th in 25:00), Donna Barry (90th and 28th in 25:36), Mari Hansen (94th and 30th in 26:01), Cliodhna O’Reilly (103rd and 34th in 26:39), Paul E. Kelly (118th in 28:02), Aisling O’Connor (153rd and 52nd in 31:39), Don Anderton (154th in 31:40) and Sharon Woods tailwalking. Fiona Bane ran in Monaghan and placed 25th overall (6th) in 26:16, whilst Brendan Glynn ran in Portumna, also placing 6th in 22:15. Liam Lyster came home in 18th (27:28) in Strokestown, whilst Michael Wycherley headed to the Isle of Wight for Easter, running in Medina where he placed 5th in 18:58 in a field of 444. Ciaran Smyth also ran in the UK, in Canterbury, where in a field of 151 he placed 12th in a time of 21:38. Ronan Moynihan took 6th place in Malahide in 18:18, followed by Brian Scanlan (8th in 18:20) and Aoife Cowhie (140th and 27th in 24:19). Francis Furey joined Catherine in Knocknacarra where he placed 64th in 26:42, whilst Maria Kennedy ran in Kilkenny where she placed 41st overall (6th woman) in 23:16. Mairin Shine placed 155th (and 67th) in Johnstown, Wexford, in a time of 45:36, whilst Olwyn Dunne and Orlaith de Burca ran in Shanganagh where Olwyn came home in 34th (5th) in 24:00 and Orlaith finished in 80th (and 21st) in 26:30. Luke Davis took 6th spot in Cabinteely in 19:39, followed closely by Barry O’Mahony (7th in 19:40) and Maria del Carmen Jimenez Campos (32nd and 5th in 24:09). Lastly, Paul and Aoife Kelly ran in Tramore, where Paul crossed the line in 18th (an excellent 20:29) and Aoife finished in 44th spot overall (9th) in 23:07. It was also the weekend for the National 10k road race held in conjunction with the Great Ireland Run. Once again, it took place in the Phoenix Park, but this year on a new course and with a combined start. In Baltic conditions, a low temperature of about 6 degrees Celsius and a biting easterly wind, the start was as usual on the Chesterfield Road heading north to the roundabout at the Ordnance Survey Road where runners turned left into the wind, but were saved having to run too far by a turn down into the Furry Glen, then past the lake on the left, up one of only two hills on the course on to the Upper Glen road with its descent to the Chapelizod gate. A left-hand turn at St. Mary’s Hospital brought runners up the second hill onto the Acres Road which they followed across past the Phoenix Monument roundabout at 6k and up onto the gently climbing North Road, which again took runners into the wind and for the second time onto the Ordnance Survey Road. A sharp left turn then had the field finishing on the Furze Road with the wind at their backs. The men’s national champion this year is DSD’s Hiko Tonosa who tucked in behind Raheny’s Kevin Dooney from the gun and the two more or less left the field behind, with Tonosa finally getting the better of his adversary in the closing stages. The women’s champion is MSB’s Catherina Mullen who finished ahead of the improving Barbara Cleary of Donore. We had at least 18 runners in the field of nearly 3,250. Although, no one was in contention for any honours we did surprisingly achieve some PBs on what may prove to be a faster course than before. Italo Giancaterina found the windy conditions tough, but still managed a top 50 place, coming across the line in 46th place in an excellent time of 33:54. He was followed by Joe O’Donoghue (84th in 35:25) and by Brian Scanlan (188th in a PB time of 38:25). Luke Haran was our fourth runner over the finish line, placing 329th in 41:24 and Luke was followed almost immediately by Brian Carroll (332nd in 41:04). Ciara Lynch was the first woman home for the club, placing 493rd overall (85th female) in 44:23 and she was followed by a new name for the report, Maura Mahoney, who took 546th spot overall (96th) in 45:24, with Sarah Lyons not too far behind in 556th (96th) in a PB time of 45:25. Paul F. Kelly also registered a PB by taking 648th spot in 43:19 and he was followed by Thomas Clarke (870th in 46:25), Carina Davidson (872nd and 197th in 49:42), Louise Van Wildermeersch (880th and 199th in 48:15) and Aoife Kelly just behind (883rd and 201st in 46:56). Further back came Maria del Carmen Jimenez Campos, with the Rotterdam marathon still in her legs (993rd and 230th in 48:41), followed by another newcomer to the report, Pauline McParland (1372nd and 369th in 52:48), Aisling O’Connor (1758th and 543rd in 55:48), Michelle Geoghegan (2072nd and 705th in 54:36) and Iseult Ni Chuinneagain (2204th overall, 779th female, in 58:44). The most inspirational results of the day came from two of the marathons. Brian O’Kelly firmly cemented himself into the status of our fastest current marathoner with a significant improvement in his PB to smash through the 2:30 barrier with a 2:25:43 finish and 7th place in the Brighton marathon. In cold and windy conditions (similar to conditions in Dublin with an easterly wind) and on a course that had several climbs in the first half and several out-and-back diversions, Brian ran super splits, with a second half just one minute slower than his first. Then, in Paris on Sunday, we had at least two runners in the marathon. Again, the race was run in cool (probably perfect) conditions and Rory Goldsmith took full advantage, storming to a new PB and breaking 3 hours for the first time, recording 2:58:41, an improvement of 18 minutes on his previous best. Christophe Marsan also ran well, registering 3:24:38, which may well also have been a PB for him. The Connemarathon (Ultra, full and half marathons) took place in wet and windy conditions on Sunday, making the already challenging event even more difficult, with a strong headwind in places. We had three participants in the full marathon, with John Lohan leading our contingent home in a field of 535 in 3:33:47 and 7th M50, Dee Lawlor coming across the line in 100th place and a time of 3:49:40 and Tara Murphy taking 290th place overall, 40th female and 4th F50, in a time of 4:27:12. We also had a runner in the ultra. Zlatko Kulic managed to take 25th place in a field of 168 and a time of 5:41:18 for the 63km (39m) race. Impressively, Zlatko ran the marathon element in under 3h20m. The 123rd Boston marathon took place on Monday in much better conditions than last year, although there was a lot of rain before the start. A prevailing westerly wind may have helped runners on the west to east point to point hilly course, although it retained its toughness, particularly as temperatures rose during the morning. The race was marked by a spectacular sprint finish between the Kenyan winner (Lawrence Cherono in 2:07:57) and his Ethiopian competitor (Lelisa Desisa), whilst Ireland's Fionnuala McCormack continues to impress, following her recent pregnancy, with a 2:30:38 finish, only 7 minutes off the winning Ethiopian's (Worknesh Degefa) time of 2:23:31. we had at least 3 runners in the race, with Paul O'Meara (in his 22nd marathon and 5th in Boston) and Niall Murphy finishing only 21 seconds apart in respectively 3:04:16 and 3:04:37. Indeed, both were exactly side by side at the 40k mark, with Paul having a slightly faster second half overall. Our third runner was TJ Bourke, who found the second half tough going, but still managed a great time of 3:12:29, highly respectable on such a challenging course. We had some good podium finishes in the parkruns at the weekend. Luke Davis was a first finisher in Cabinteely in 19:07, whilst Eddie Nugent also placed first in his native Clonmel in 18:51. To complete the picture, Stephen Hurley did likewise in Poolbeg in a time of 17:22. Our other podium placer was Maurice Kelter, fresh from the Rotterdam marathon last week, who placed 3rd in 19:45, followed by Brian Scanlan before his great run in the national 10k on Sunday (5th in 20:47). Joining Luke in Cabinteely were Helena Walsh who placed 19th overall, 4th female, in 23:00 and Helena was followed by Lisa Shine (45th and 15th in 26:16), Emma O’Mahony (66th and 26th in 27:38) and Mairin Shine as a tailwalker. Meanwhile, in Poolbeg, Stephen was accompanied by Kenan Furlong (9th in 20:04), Kieran Finucane (11th in 20:22), Russell Murphy (50th in 23:45), Ava Rose Clarke (74th and 8th in 25:05), Gillian Curran (81st and 11th in 25:30), Ciara McElligott (130th and 37th in 30:57), Mari Hansen, another Rotterdammer, (131st and 38th in 30:57) with, as tailwalkers, Aoife Clarke and Fiona Bane. We had two runners in Malahide, with Ronan Moynihan placing 4th in 18:27, followed by Gillian Lyons (142nd and 36th in 25:48), whilst Kate Murray was our sole representative in Marlay Park (94th and 10th in 23:18). Sarah Lyons and Phelim Murray participated in St. Anne’s, with both recording the same time of 25:01 (156th and 157th) with Sarah finishing 25th female. Paul and Aoife Kelly ran in the sizeable inaugural Royal Canal parkrun in Kilcock, with Paul placing 121st in 28:29 and Aoife, 124th (43rd) in 28:33. Mairead Cashman ran in Glen River, finishing in 43rd (10th) in 28:43, whilst Aidan Hudner placed 75th in Victoria Park in Glasgow in a time of 22:04 and a field of 415. Spring marathons are notoriously difficult to prepare for as the weather in which we train can be a lot different from the weather experienced in the race. This proved to be the case on Sunday and the temperatures climbed steadily through the morning on a cloudless day with only a gentle breeze in places, with many of the later finishers experiencing temperatures well over 20 degrees Celsius (and remember that’s a shade temperature and there is little shade in Rotterdam). The race is generally well-organised but for some inexplicable reason the gun goes at 10 am, thus ensuring that everyone finishes in the afternoon and putting more of a burden on the emergency services than if the race were to start an hour earlier. As a consequence, we witnessed a lot of cramping among runners towards the end, despite there being apparently plenty of isotonic drinks available. At least the organisers had the presence of mind to provide sachets of factor 50 sun cream with the race numbers. Despite the brutal conditions, we saw some pretty impressive performances. On a relatively flat course (though not without its bridges and underpasses), the Kenyan male winner came home in 2:04, a result not to be sneezed at, whilst the female Ethiopian winner ran under 2:23. There were also loads of Irish runners we were able to support, including two of the age category winners, Des Kennedy of Raheny, who won the M50 category in 2:37, and ex-Barcelona Olympian Tommy Hughes from Maghera in Derry who won the M55 category at the age of 59 in a time of 2:30, faster than he ran in Barcelona and posting a new world record for a 59-year old (breaking the old record by 7 minutes). Even the M60 category was won by a Portuguese runner in the impressive time of 2:45. Jasper de Taeye, who was a member of the club whilst in Ireland last year, satisfactorily managed to repeat his previous time for the race in 2:40. Otherwise our first man home was the ever-improving Rob Browne who ran just a 2 minute positive split to come home in a PB time of 2:52, after having broken 3 hours in Dublin for the first time last October. Adam Flanagan, for a long time leading the contingent, fell back slightly towards the end, finding the heat challenging, but still managed 2:54, followed closely by Barry McGuire in a PB time of 2:55. Barry was almost missed by the supporters when he felt the need to run without a singlet for a while, only to be reminded by someone in the crowd that he might want to avoid getting fried with sunburn. We then had to wait a short while for Mick Smyth to cross the line. Mick has a distaste for warm conditions and found the going challenging, but he still managed 3:11, followed by Bob Manson in 3:15 and Tom Foley who ran 3:17, another couple of runners who could have expected a significantly lower time had the conditions been friendlier. One of the more surprising results was that of Dominick Branigan, not because his 3:20 was about 40 minutes off his best, but because he started the race at all, let alone running and finishing it in some discomfort, having suffered from plantar fasciitis throughout training and running few miles as a result in preparation. Dominick was preceded across the line by Maurice Kelter and Kiera Roche both with a PB time of 3:19, Maurice having had only a relatively short amount of training for the event whilst Kiera is another runner who can expect her times to drop in better conditions, and who not only had the heat to deal with but also a niggling problem in her knee that she was anxious to protect. It is surprising how many PBs were produced, giving our runners a lot of confidence for Dublin in October in particular (naturally, most have already signed up!). Andrew Kinneen produced a PB effort in 3:23, as did Cormac McGuire in 3:28. Darran Lovely ran a steady pace (in wave 2) to finish in a satisfying 3:29 and he was followed by Triona Quill who ran the race surrounded by tall Dutchmen with flying elbows at her head height. Nevertheless, Triona ran not much slower than her PB in Dublin, with an excellent 3:32 and 11th place in her F50 age category. Triona was followed by Katie McElroy who also achieved a super PB time, coming across the line in 3:33, following a plan that was determined over pasta the night before whilst also celebrating her birthday. Our contingent was completed by Damien Fitzgibbon (3:36), Gian Piero Allerta (3:41), Phelim Murray (3:47), Jemma Lyons (3:52), Maria del Carmen Jimenez Campos (3:59), Aifric O’Sullivan (4:05), Maria Esteban (4:16) and Mari Hansen, who was forced to walk large stretches of the race (5:27). Jemma nearly didn’t make the race and it wasn’t because of the knee injury from which she has been suffering since the Bohermeen half. She spent the night before the race in The Hague, hoping to get up early and catch a train to Rotterdam. Instead, she slept through her alarm waking up at 8:30 and forced to take an Uber taxi. En route she realised she had left her number in The Hague and that meant her boyfriend had similarly to take an Uber, arriving just before the gun went. Not exactly the best start to a marathon, but Jemma still maintained a huge smile all the way round. There were many Irish supporters at the race, so our runners had plenty of people cheering them on, including a reasonable number of Crusaders who made the trip and, because it’s so easy to get round Dutch cities on a bike, who were able to provide support at far ends of the figure of eight course with its crossing of the Erasmus bridge twice. Using this mode of transport we were able to support in 3-4 places, on one occasion using lots of ingenuity to fly the tricolour for all to see. It should be noted that Sarah Lyons ran in the “quarter marathon” but it was a bit like the WMM and by not starting close enough to the front, she had difficulties getting through walkers. We also had a runner in the Vienna marathon on the same day. Seamus Moore ran it in an excellent time of 2:55:12. He described conditions as extremely windy on an otherwise flat and boring course (which can hardly be said for Rotterdam with its fascinating modern architecture and busy harbour), not one he would choose to return to. We had heard about the wind before, as apparently Vienna can be like a wind tunnel. Closer to home, we had runners in the UCD Ras 5k on Saturday on a chilly but sunny day. There were a few unfamiliar names among the Crusader runners, so it’s good to see we have more club-mates racing. In a field of 283, Luke Davis crossed the line in 31st place in a time of 18:10, and he was followed by Patrick Needham in 43rd for a time of 18:48 and who felt the course measured short (by as much as 180m).. It’s been a common thread this year. Brendan Glynn in 71st place in 20:42, followed by Paula Bradshaw (87th overall, 19th female) in 21:36, Aoife Cowhie (127th and 30th) in 23:45 and Cindy MacConnie (144th and 37th) in 24:56. Three days earlier, TCD had held its own 5k, a race between students and staff around the campus. Michael Wycherley from the club took part, coming home in 8th place and the first member of staff in a field of 154. In the University indoor athletics championships last week, Matt Behan ran 14:38 to win the 110m hurdles for his alma mater, DCU. Finally, we come to the parkruns. Numbers generally seem to have been lower this week, but we still have a few events on which to report. One parkrun, however, that seems to attract huge numbers is Bushy Park in London, where Olwyn Dunne joined 1300 other participants to place 624th overall, 144th female, in 26:31. The first woman across the line was Olympian Mara Yamauchi (18:12) of marathon fame. Also, outside Dublin we had Kris Ryan run in Main Beach in Australia where she placed 65th and 10th in 24:00 in a field of 371, whilst Aidan Hudner ran again in Glasgow alongside 350 plus runners, placing 55th in 21:54. We had one first finisher this week. Kieran Little ran in Westport where he ran 16:44. The only other podium place went to Niamh Corby who placed 2nd (11th overall) in Poolbeg in a time of 20:11, 3 seconds behind Sportsworld’s Maura Ginty. There was quite a contingent in Poolbeg, at least 17 in total including Niamh. A week before the Connemara Ultra, Zlatko Kulic took 5th spot in 19:24, followed by Niamh, Diarmuid Byrne (14th in 20:29), David Timoney (18th in 21:12), Louise Dobbyn (31st and 4th) in 22:39, Lisa Shine (38th and 7th) in 23:03, Russell Murphy (41st in 23:10), Sharon Woods (44th and 11th) in 23:31, Aoife Clarke (51st and 13th) in 24:15, Ali May Hann (68th and 19th) in 24:57, Ava Rose Clarke (89th and 27th) in 26:11, Cathal Murphy (118th in 28:00), Ciara McElligott (144th and 55th in 30:46) , Mairin Shine (171st and 70th) in 49:23 and then the tailwalkers of Darina Scully, Maria Pertl and Fiona Bane. Dave Carter placed 7th in 20:15 in Cabinteely, whilst Mairead Cashman ran 28:12 for 114th and 25th in Bushy Park (Dublin!). Aoife Kelly was our sole representative in St Anne’s (90th and 10th in 23:02), whilst Francis Furey was also a singleton in Knocknacarra where he ran 25:20 for 44th spot.
