Maintaining good tradition in the Calcutta Run, a Windmill victory and strong performances elsewhere28/5/2018
The Bob Heffernan 5k road race is a long-standing fixture in the racing calendar on a fast and flat course in Co. Meath and attracted a quality field last Tuesday. We had 3 runners taking part, led home by Stephen O’Kennedy, maintaining recent strong for. Stephen placed 44th out of a field of 519 in a time of 16:59 and he was followed by Brian Scanlan (119th in 18:45) and Denis Murphy (208 in 20:09). On Wednesday there were two events, Dublin Athletics’ 3rd graded meet in Tallaght and an IMRA race. In Tallaght, John O’Loughlin placed 2nd in the 1st heat of the 400m C standard in 57.09, whilst in the men’s 800m D grade, Brendan Glynn came home in a PB time of 2:27.98 to place 9th, with Paul Kelly in 12th spot in a time of 3:27.86. Meanwhile on a race in Glasnamullen (involving also a clockwise lap of Djouce), 184 mountaineers were contesting a 10.2k race involving a climb of 410m on moderate terrain. Unsurprisingly, Becky Quinn was our first runner home in 1st place in the women’s race (28th overall) in a time of 53:47, behind overall winner Diarmaid Collins (46:05). Brian McGuckin was next over the line in 36th (55:58), followed by Ollie McGrath (49th in 57:57), Anthony O’Reilly (50th in 58:00) just behind, and Pat Quill (80th in 1:03:50). We also had a good few runners in the Staff Relays in the Phoenix Park on Thursday, but unfortunately, individual results are not recorded in the corporate team event. Over the weekend, on the track we saw various events taking place. In Belfast at an IMC meet on the Mary Peters track, Michael Kiely ran with 25 others in the 3,000m, coming home in 14th and a PB time of 8:48.43. In Oordegem in Belgium Matthew Behan joined other elite Irish athletes in search of European qualifying times and just missed out on a B standard time for the men’s 110mH with a time of 13.92. Finally, in the Irish Life Health games in Santry, Rhianna McCarthy and John O’Loughlin took on multiple events. Rhianna placed 7th in the 200m in 26.19, 6th in series 1 of the 100m in 12.65 and 4th in series 2 in 12.74. John placed 8th in heat 2 of the 200m in 25.56, 8th in series 1 heat 2 of the 100m in 12.67 and 4th in heat 2 of the 400m in 58.14. Valentinos Goularas was the only entrant in the 110mH, running 15.10. On Saturday, we had runners in both Calcutta Run races, the 5k and the unusual distance of 10.3k. In coming across the line in 8th place in the latter event, Kiera Roche secured 1st woman home in a time of 41:26. Kiera was followed by Brendan Glynn (26th in 44:08) and by Kenan Furlong (47th in 45:44), the masters runner making a welcome return to racing. The field measured nearly 350 runners. In the larger 5K event (580 runners), Luke Haran was the first Crusader home in 10th place in a time of 20:57. Luke was followed by Noel Reilly (18th in 21:59), Serena Moloney (25th overall, 5th female, in 22:35) and Kate Murray (37th overall, 6th female, in 23:31). Paul Dempsey distinguished himself in the Garristown Windmill Run, leading all the way from gun to tape in the 10k event. Paul’s time was 37:50 and he was followed home by Darina Scully who placed 50th overall in the 312-strong field (9th woman) in a time of 48:45. There were two distances covered over the weekend in the Malahide Castle-staged Run Dublin Run races. Zlatko Kulic was our only representative in the 210-strong 10K event, placing 9th in 40:13, whilst Geraldine Clements was another winner for the club in the 5k race. In a field of nearly 80 runners, Geraldine placed 7th overall and winning in a time of 25:08. Ciara McElligott also ran, recording 38:10 for her 58th place overall (30th female finisher). On Sunday Gian Piero Allerta and Eoghan O’Gorman took on the Clogherhead Seaside 10k, with Gian Piero placing 34th in 42:58 and Eoghan 47th in 43:53. They ran with nearly 340 other participants. Leo Lundy reported that he ran 30 miles in the Runners of the Lost Ark ultra event in the UK, taking place on the Thames towpath between Egham and Runnymede, in extremely warm conditions. There was a good club showing in the various parkruns on Saturday morning. Tim O’Donnell was 1st finisher in Clonakilty in a time of 20:43, likewise Daniel Lowe in Lough Key in 18:48. Meanwhile, Fiona Bane was 2nd (32nd overall) in Poolbeg in a time of 23:20. Fiona was joined by Kieran Finucane (4th in 19:25), Sharon Woods (37th overall, 4th woman, in 24:01), Gillian Curran (54th overall, 10th woman, in 26:21), Mari Hansen (69th overall, 18th woman, in 28:02) and Don Anderton who mopped up the walkers (98th in 55:17). Frank Hague ran well to place 3rd in Porterstown in a time of 17:30, whilst Andrej Kujikis also appeared on the podium taking 3rd in Cabinteely in 19:46. Matt Cranley pushed his buggy into 4th place (20:16) in Father Collins whilst Brian Carroll took 6th spot in 19:01 in Ballincollig. Aidan Hudner ran again in Glasgow, placing 81st in 22:15 in a field of nearly 340, whilst Brian Leonard placed 16th in Marlay in 19:31. Fiona lane placed 126th overall, 57th woman, in 31:10 in Shanganagh, whilst Mairead Cashman took 173rd place overall, 45th woman, in 28:27 in Malahide. Finally, we had two runners in St. Anne’s. Aoife Quinn placed 112th (14th woman) in 23:20, whilst Denis Murphy came home in 134th place in a time of 23:54. Bob Heffernan 5K Road Race (519) Overall place Name Cat. Among the races were two held on the beach in Sandymount, one on Tuesday by the BHAA and the other the following day in aid of the Yes campaign in the forthcoming referendum. We had participants in both. In the BHAA ESB 5k, an event with a long history, we had a race winner in Niamh Corby who placed 31st overall in a field of 160, in a time of 20:45. The other runners from the club who took part were TJ Bourke, who took 22nd spot in 19:55, Phelim Murray (71st in 22:46), Joe Dunne, following up on his super run in Terenure the previous Sunday (74th in 23:03) coming in ahead of Olwyn Dunne (for the second time in two events, but not begrudged in the least!) (91st overall, 8th female finisher and 2nd in her age category) and Fiona Lane (148th overall and 5th in her age category). On Wednesday, we saw a super return to competitive running from Karl Gohery, a runner who suffered a major leg injury in a road accident about 4.5 years ago. Karl has surprised everyone with the speed of his improvement since taking his initial first steps again recently and on Wednesday evening alongside more than 660 runners, he placed 68th in a time of 24:10. There was also a good run from Ali Onur Uyar who took 13th spot in 20:55. Also on Wednesday, there was the weekly IMRA mountain race, this time around Scalp. It was a relatively short event by IMRA standards of 5.8km with a climb of 212m on moderate terrain with two different loops of forested land around Carrickgalligan. Once again, our F40 runner, Becky Quinn, took top honours, placing 27th overall in a field of nearly 200 runners. Warren Swords also ran well, taking 5th place in 24:10, followed by Brian McGuckin (33rd in 27:30), who found the race too short for his liking and in any event he was saving himself for the Wicklow Way Relay at the weekend. Next came Anthony O’Reilly (40th in 28:19), followed by Gary Park (54th in 29:06), who has developed a new taste for mountain running. Over the weekend there were various events on offer. In Santry Demesne on Sunday, Tom Dunne ran in the 10K there, placing 28th in a field of 106 in a time of 44:15, whilst in the 56-strong 5k also on offer, Geraldine Clements, a runner coming back from a longish injury, took 2nd place in the women’s race (5th overall) in a time of 22:03. Another runner on the comeback trail is Phillip Matthews and he ran in the perhaps misnamed Malahide 10K Fun Run given that it was won by Peter Somba. Phillip ran 47:41 to place 14th in a field of 56. Kiera Roche distinguished herself with a 4th place finish (36th overall) in the 473-strong River Moy Half marathon over the weekend. Kiera's time was 1:31:18. Further afield, our London exile Maeve Curry reported that she ran a PB time of 1:44 in the hackney Half marathon. The Streets of Dublin 5k took place on Sunday morning and we had at least 6 Crusaders (Joe O'Donoghue, Damien Fitzgibbon, Zlatko Kulic, Tim O'Donnell, Maria Kennedy and Miriam Logan) competing in this event. However, at this time, no results have been published (some glitch apparently), but when they are released, the report will be updated. Just before they head home from their holiday, early on Sunday morning in Sydney, Australia, Joe Walsh and Alma Hanevy took on the Sydney half marathon. An early 06:45 start made for ideal conditions for running. However, the course was less kind with barely a flat section to be had and 450m of climbing and descending overall. Alma finished just outside the top 50 in 1:32:07, whilst Joe, surprisingly, ran a super PB time of 1:21:46. On the track over the weekend Bob Lyne walked for Ireland in the European masters’ 30k race-walking championship in Alicante. He reports that had a wonderfully satisfying day. The 3-man Irish team, which also included Brian Ó Domhnaill and Sean McMullin, won the bronze medal. It was extremely challenging in the heat with many competitors retiring in the conditions. In addition 9 of 52 were disqualified. Latvia won, with Spain second and Ireland third. He certainly did not expect a European medal to arrive so early in his recent development as a racewalker. Many congratulations to him. Another decent turnout of Crusaders was witnessed on Saturday morning in the parkruns, with just one podium placing. In St. Anne’s Darina Scully placed 3rd (79th overall) in a time of 22:47. Tim O’Donnell placed 41st in the same event in a time of 20:49, followed by Denis Murphy (275th in 28:52), Aoife Quinn (308th overall, 103rd woman, in 30:01) and Lorraine Fitzsimons (320th overall, 109th woman, in 30:25). Elsewhere, Tomas Dunne took 12th spot in 21:11 in Cabinteely, followed by Harp Bhambra (140th overall, 47th woman, in 40:02). Matt Cranley pushed his buggy into 4th place in Father Collins in a time of 20:13 and Fiona Bane ran 23:48 to place 4th woman, 29th overall, in Tramore. Brian Scanlan was again a lone representative in River valley, placing 7th in 21:10. In Fairview, Phelim Murray took 22nd spot in 23:29, followed by Sarah Lyons who came home in 39th place overall, 8th woman finisher, in 25:28, whilst the duo of Maria Pertl and Diarmuid Byrne ran Tolka Valley, Maria placing 27th overall (6th woman) in almost the same time as last week (27:08) on a different course, followed by Diarmuid who ran 27:09 to place 28th. As usual, Poolbeg saw a decent representation from the club. We had 7 runners, led home by Padraig Walsh (5th in 19:35), followed by Andrej Kujikis (7th in 19:44), Russell Murphy (19th in 22:20), Zalan Kovacs (28th in 23:10), Colm Foley (34th in 23:23), Ali May Hannigan (68th overall, 20th woman, in 25:30) and Donna Barry (81st overall, 26th woman, in 26:33). Finally, Aidan Hudner returned to Glasgow for his parkrun this week, placing 88th in a field of nearly 400 in a time of 22:28. At last, we come to one of the highlights of the weekend, if not the year. The club fielded one official club team alongside two unofficial ones among the 35 teams to contend this year’s marvellous Wicklow Way Relay. For those unaware of the event, and surely there can’t be many by now, the race involves teams of up to 8 individuals which must include two women and two runners over 40, traversing the Wicklow Way from Kilmashogue Park just south of the official start of the route in Marlay Park to Shillelagh in Co. Wicklow, a distance in excess of 125km. Runners must stick to the prescribed route and every year there is drama. This year was no exception. Despite recces being carried out, it is still possible for any runner to go wrong on any of the legs. Indeed, even Olympian athletes can go wrong, as demonstrated by Caitriona Jennings who was lost for 5 minutes on her leg (the 3rd), but, which fortunately, did not prevent her team, which also included Olympian Linda Byrne on the last leg, from winning the competition. There were stories of runners even losing their way to the start of a leg for a handover and being over 20 minutes late and also we witnessed a runner from another club on leg 6 running a route which had been in use as a detour 2 years ago when logging was blocking the usual path and which he had run at that time, thinking nothing had changed. It had, and his team received a time penalty for having shortened the leg significantly. However, we were not immune either! On a beautiful sunny day, at the end of leg one in temperatures around 13 degrees our B team (the hateful 8), led off by Brian Leonard, was lying in 15th place ahead of our first team in 20th. This was understandable as the official Crusaders team for the first leg was led off by Joe McDermott who has spent little or no time in the mountains and who was only drafted in at the last minute (with a recce two days before the race) as a result of injury to team captain John McAuley. Still, Joe was only 3 minutes back from Brian, so little had been lost. The first major changes to the teams’ fortunes came in the second leg. Hateful 8’s captain, Brian McGuckin, took 6 places to finish in 9th place, whilst Michael Wycherley for the official team amazingly overhauled 10 runners to finish in 10th overall. Ilona McElroy for the official team and Irene Gorman for the B team, held their places, whilst also placing, respectively, 2nd and 3rd fastest for the leg and this was repeated by Catherine Thornton for the A team and Caroline Crowley for the B team on the leg from Oldbridge to Glendalough. They came home, respectively in 7th and 8th fastest overall times (2nd and 3rd female finishers behind fellow Crusader Becky Quinn who was 3rd overall on the leg for another team). This was Caroline’s first mountain running outing and she gave it her all. Unfortunately, however, she was to provide one of the dramas of the day. After a fall enroute, she was suffering a bit from the effort as she handed over to Eddie Nugent for the 5th leg and needed a bit of attention for the cuts and bruises and for the effects of the effort which probably reflected the challenges of the climbs and the heat of the day. Temperatures began to soar throughout the day and runners needed to be well hydrated. Indeed by the end the temperature was pretty close to 20 degrees. Most of us are not used to this, particularly with all the steep ascending that marks the Wicklow Way. Anyway, everyone will be pleased to hear that Caroline had recovered fully by the end of the day. Frank Halligan for the A team and Eddie Nugent for the B team were next to go, from Glendalough to Glenmalure and Frank was able to reel in 3 runners, with the 7th fastest time for the leg, bringing the team up to 7th place, whilst Eddie was able to keep the B team in 9th place. Warren Swords, who had belatedly because of John’s injury, stepped into run leg 6, with the 3rd fastest time for the leg, brought the A team even nearer to the podium by picking off another 3 runners, and by the end of the leg, they were only 3 minutes off 3rd place. Meanwhile, despite Pat Quill’s sterling effort, the B team had slipped back one place to 10th (still in line with our goal of a top 10 finish). It was on the seventh leg that the second drama of the day befell the Hateful 8. Whilst Kieran Little was able to push on and pick up yet another place on the longest leg of the day, a half marathon, and take the team into 3rd going into the last leg from just outside Tinahely to Shillelagh, Dominick Branigan, failed to realise that what he thought was a familiar landmark on the course wasn’t at all and added a 5k loop to the leg, effectively running the distance of a metric marathon. At least, Dominick had the fitness to run that distance! Thankfully, he managed to get back on route and was only missing for about 25 minutes. However, during that time the team lost 5 places and by the time Dominick handed over to James Cottle for the 8th leg, the team had slipped to 15th overall. The 8th leg was uneventful for Dave Carter who brought the team home in a well-deserved 3rd place. Meanwhile, for the B team, James Cottle worked on recovering a couple of places. Despite being overtaken early on by a runner from Bros. Pearse, he stuck to his game plan and managed to overtake her as well as a runner from Tinahely, so that the team ended in 13th place overall. It was James’ birthday on the day and the oldest runner in the race received a super rendering from all competitors of “Happy Birthday” as he came across the finishing line. Mention should be made of our third team in the event which was the only all-women’s team. Claudine Hughes, Kate Murray, Mairead Cashman, Anna Shine, Fiona Shine, Lisa Shine and Olwyn Dunne battled gamely, and after moving back and forth a couple of positions throughout the day finally came home in 35th place. Of note is the fact that Olwyn was a relatively late addition to the team and ran both leg 7 (the half marathon distance) and leg 8 (10k). It was a major contribution on her part, matched only by Torben Dahl, an ex-Crusader who now runs for Glendalough, who ran two legs, for two different teams. We should also mention that our other Crusaders ran well. Becky was noted above, but also Brendan Murphy was on the winning team and ran the 2nd fastest 6th leg, whilst Andrea Talpo was on the team that had the runner turn up 20 minutes late for his leg, so that Andrea’s sterling effort for a 9th place finish on leg one was in vain. Laura Flannelly placed 4th overall in time (3rd woman finisher) behind Ilona and Irene, whilst James Ryan, came home in 29th place in leg 7. Lastly, we cannot end the report without giving a great vote of thanks to the organisers, Crusaders Jason Kehoe (and Anne) and ex-Crusader and recent father again, Rene Borg. Another day in the annals of the Wicklow Way Relay that will live long in our memories. We’re all looking forward to next year’s event already! BHAA ESB Beach 5K (160) Overall place Name Cat. We had athletes in 6 events on the night, one of them in the field. After having started out too slow in his words at the first meet and this time getting his tactics right from the start, Brendan Glynn recorded a PB of 5:18.00, placing 4th in the men’s 1500 D race, ahead of Denis Murphy who came home in 5th place in 5:22.61. Paul Kelly took 9th spot in 7:15.67. Emer Kenny was our sole representative in the women’s 1500m C race, and she was happy to take 8th place in a large field in a time of 5:42.55, an excellent time for the start of her track season. Paul Kelly ran again in the 200m C1 race, placing 8th in 34.34, whilst John O’Loughlin ran the same distance in the C2 race, and finished in 4th place in a time of 26.48. In the men’s mixed A, B, C and D 5000m, Frank Halligan finished in 16:43.98 and 6th place, whilst Joe McDermott on the back of his Limerick marathon relay effort a couple of days earlier, followed in 11th in 17:34.62. Finally, Iris Fetahovic took on the women’s long jump, placing 3rd with a leap of 3.92m. We then come to the highlight of the weekend, the Terenure 5 mile road race, organised by Sportsworld, which attracted in excess of 1,300 runners (sold out for the 2nd successive year). Among them, were more than 30 Crusaders who definitely made their mark on the event, helped enormously by the strength of the vociferous club support around the course which, as usual, is second to none. The race was run in quite warm, sunny and calm conditions on roads around the perimeter and more of Terenure College. It involved one big lap followed by one smaller and the race was fast and generally flat (or at least the drags were not too noticeable!). The 16 women representing the club ran extremely well, with the senior team scorers of Ilona McElroy, Catherine Thornton, Kiera Roche and Edel Haverty agonisingly missing out on a prize by countback, having the same score (74 points) as DSD who were awarded second place (and only the first two teams were awarded prizes). So our team was given 3rd. There was some consolation for Ilona, however, as she won 1st prize in the F35 category, having placed 6th (76th overall) in a time of 30:37. Catherine and Kiera followed Ilona in, respectively, 14th and 15th places (101st and 105th overall, in, respectively, 31:52 and 31:55), whilst Edel was a little further back in 39th place (215th overall, in a time of 34:37). 12 of our runners finished in the top 150 places, with Dee Ni Chearbhaill running strongly and leading the masters team home (218th overall, 40th woman, and 6th in her age category, in 34:39). Dee was followed by Grainne Regan (229th overall, 44th woman, in 34:48) and Olwyn Dunne (319th overall, 67th woman, 7th in her age category, in 36:39). The three women scorers on the masters team collectively finished in 4th place. Behind Olwyn came Rachael Yorke (341st overall, 77th woman, in 37:28) running really well considering she is recovering from a recent appendectomy and Marie Kennedy a little further back (351st overall, 78th woman, in 37:37). Niamh Quinn was next (378th overall, 90th woman, in 38:06), followed by Miriam Logan in her first 5 miler (449th overall, 116th woman, in 38:49) and Carina Davidson (528th overall, 135th woman, in 39:43). The Cru female contingent was completed by Sharon Woods (723rd overall, 221st woman, in 42:21), Jean Devlin (806th overall, 270th woman, in 44:34), Michelle Geoghegan, who’s only recently been getting into competitive running (881st overall, 315th woman, in a PB time of 45:44) and Mairead Cashman (912th overall, 337th woman, in 46:18). Like Ciara Hickey who won in Tallaght last week and then led the women home in Terenure, Peter Somba, who won in Limerick last week, won in Terenure, this time getting the better of Mick Clohisey (winning by 1 second). Our men were not too far back and we had 10 runners finishing among the top 150. As to be expected, Joe O’Donoghue was first across the line for the club in 7th place in 25:56, just two minutes behind the winner. Rob Cross, the first of our masters, was next a minute later in 13th place (26:58) and 1st in the M40 age category, followed by John Mulvihill, testing himself out after an injury absence, (16th in 27:20) and newcomer Stephen O’Kennedy (35th in 28:41). Our next two scoring masters came in just behind Stephen. Joe McDermott, running in his third racing event in 7 days, placed 40th in 28:56 and Frank Hague took 49th spot in a time of 29:19. These results meant that Rob, Joe (a recent arrival to the masters) and Frank took top spot in the team rankings in the masters category, successfully defending the title won last year (and possibly even the year before). Behind Frank came Andrea Talpo with a likely PB (74th in 30:28) and Andrea was followed by James Cottle who ran negative splits and worked his way steadily through the field (90th in 31:22 and 1st in his M60 age category). Eddie Nugent followed (113th in 32:11), with Gearoid Grogan a little further back (132nd in 32:54). Other great times came from Tom Dunne (167th in 33:34), Gian Piero Allerta (172nd in a PB time of 33:48), David Timoney (176th in 33:51), Denis Murphy in a PB equalling time of 33:53 (179th), Eanna Farrell (199th in 34:29) and Phelim Murray (205th in 34:29) whose parents declared that he’d enjoyed too much of the cheese plate at their anniversary celebrations the night before. Noel Reilly, just getting back into it, was next (208th in 36:07), followed by Joe Dunne who threw caution to the wind, running with freedom, to record a super 36:27 (308th). A great time was had by all, especially those who appreciated the free massage both before and after the race. Having also organised the race well, Sportsworld laid on quite a decent spread at the end. Leo Lundy reported that he flew to the USA and, just off the plane, he decided to enter the Switchback marathon near Dripping Springs, Texas, his 75th trail marathon. Leo embarked on this adventure on the back of no sleep, in humid temperatures around 93 degrees Fahrenheit and on a course involving a 2,600ft monster climb. The race involved 2 x 13.1 mile laps around a twisty and extremely rocky ranch trail. It was really hilly and Leo even encountered a snake on the trail. Despite being well down the field, having coped with difficulty with the heat, Leo discovered that he was the oldest in the race by some distance and won the Grand Master age category, winning a cowboy hat as well as a voucher. Despite the sunny start to the weekend, Parkrun numbers appeared to be generally down on the bank holiday weekend. All the same, we were well represented. Darina Scully took first finisher position (11th overall) in Father Collins in a time of 22:31. Darina was preceded home by Matt Cranley with a new PB time with his buggy (3rd in 19:51). Sarah Lyons also podiumed in Fairview (16th overall, 3rd woman, in 24:47), just behind Phelim Murray (before the anniversary bash!) who placed 10th in 23:44. Further afield, Joe Walsh and Alma Hanevy, on holiday in Singapore, took on East Coast Park, with Joe placing 4th in 18:12 and Alma 20th overall, 2nd female finisher, in 20:52 in a field of nearly 90 runners. Again, even further away, Kris Ryan placed 32nd overall, 7th female, in 23:54, in the 131-strong field in Coomera once again. By contrast, our Scottish exile, Aidan Hudner, came home to run in Shanganagh, taking 32nd place in a time of 23:17. Mairead Cashman was our sole runner in Bushy Dublin, placing 95th overall, 21st female, in 29:22 and, likewise, women’s captain Lisa Shine represented us in Clonakilty placing 16th overall, 5th woman, in 28:10. Colm Kernan was also on his own in Marlay, taking 25th spot in 20:21, along with Brendan Kieran (21st in 24:37) in Hartstown, whilst Brian Scanlan took 5th place in River Valley in a time of 19:55. Diarmuid Byrne and Maria Pertl decided to run in Poppintree on Saturday, with Diarmuid finishing in 12th place in 21:01 and Maria, 70th overall, 21st female, in 27:06. Finally, we had a significant contingent in our local parkrun in Poolbeg. Kieran Finucane led the members home in 5th place (19:27), followed by David O’Donnell (10th in 20:45), Fiona Bane (42nd overall, 5th female, in 24:22), Rhona McGrath, making a welcome return to running (54th overall, 11th female, in 25:45), Donna Barry (57th overall, 13th woman, in 26:12), Mary Dolan (66th overall, 18th woman, in 26:38), Jennifer Armstrong (85th overall, 29th woman, in 29:12) and Don Anderton (103rd in 33:33). Nearly 270 runners took part in this BHAA inaugural 5k event. The race itself involved 2 laps of 2.5k on a flat course with only 4 turns on each lap and long straights, ideal for potential PBs. Indeed, there were some good results among the runners, among whom were at least 5 Crusaders. Karl Walsh was the first of our contingent home in 17:22 and 12th place. It was an interesting result as Karl was to take on the Limerick marathon 4 days later with a creditable performance in that event too. Karl was followed by Ollie McGrath (32nd in 18:41) and by Robbie Moore (91st in 20:51) and Tony Hackett (128th in 22:38). Aisling O’Connor was our only female Crusader in the race, coming home in 256th place overall in a time of 33:56. Members will be interested to read that Sean Murphy, who trains with us, placed 8th in 17:03. On Saturday morning Ela Szkamruk took part in the 115-strong field of the Polskaeire 10k race in the Phoenix Park, placing 50th overall, but, more importantly, 4th female finisher, in a time of 51:17. Saturday afternoon saw the first IMC event of the year on the six-lane track down in Greystones on a beautiful sunny afternoon, with a bit of a breeze, a tailwind on the home straight. We were treated to some excellent men’s and women’s racing from 800m through 5000m, with 3 members of the club taking part in two of the races. Garret Dunne ran in the men’s 800m D race, coming home in 3rd place in a time of 2:05.82, whilst Joe O’Donohue and Michael Kiely switched places throughout the men’s 5000m B race, finally ending up respectively in 9th and 11th places, both with PB times. Joe’s participation was his first on the track and he improved on his 5k road time by about 12s to 15:13.51, whilst Michael’s PB was a little tighter (less than one second) for a time of 15:19.17. On Sunday morning, three of our number joined nearly 260 other runners to take part in the Tallaght 5k, a KIA Race Series event which also contained the Dublin novices 5k road racing championships. In super conditions, the race was surprisingly won in a time of 14:33 by DSD’s Ethiopian runner by origin, Hiko Tonosa, who had come 2nd the previous day on the Greystones track to a British runner in the extremely exciting men’s 5000m A race in a time of 14:09.89. Michael Wycherley may well have got himself a PB in placing 18th in a time of 16:35 and 3rd M40, followed by Tom Dunne (109th in 20:25), whilst Dee Ni Chearbhaill also had a good outing, coming home in 131st place overall, 20th woman and 4th in her O/40 age category, in a time of 21:36. Also, on Sunday, we had a few runners taking part in the myriad events on offer in Limerick. As mentioned above, Karl Walsh ran in the marathon, placing 68th in a field of nearly 600 and a super time of 3:09:20, behind race winners Peter Mooney (2:29) and Shona Keane (3:00). In the half marathon, won again by Peter Somba (1:08), Kieran Little overcame some residual stiffness from his Boston marathon run, to finish in 17th place in a time of 1:18:51. In a field of nearly 2,000 he was followed by Damien Fitzgibbon (115th in 1:32:14), Limerick native Luke Haran (291st in 1:40:40) and James Ryan (302nd in 1:41:03). In the 6 mile race, won inevitably by John Travers (29:40) and Siobhan O’Doherty (35:33), we had two Limerick natives running. Rob Cross ran well to place 7th (2nd O/35) in 33:37 and he was followed by Sarah Cush (220th overall, 40th woman, in 44:03), making a welcome return to road racing. Finally, we had a few runners in in the marathon relay and they all podiumed. James Murphy was a member of a team from Co. Clare that came in 2nd in a time of 2:46, whilst Tony Owens and Joe McDermott also took part in a team on behalf of the Irish Times and came home in 3rd place in 2:56 (Tony running 41 minutes for the 10k leg and Joe running 47 minutes for 13k). Further afield over the weekend, Stephen Moore reported that he ran in the Berlin “Big 25”, a 25k race held in 22 degrees, a temperature which he found extremely challenging. He was able to stay with the lead group through 16k, finally finishing in 1:34 and a likely top-10 finish. Also, Ciaran Diviney and Ciara Lehane, currently on holiday in the Greek islands, reported that they both podiumed in a 10k race on Sifnos. In a field exceeding 370 participants Ciaran finished in 2nd place in a time of 36:45, whilst Ciara came home in 17th spot overall and 2nd woman in a time of 50:53. They both took home a rather large Greek urn, which no home is complete without! As usual, we have a round-up of parkrun results. This weekend we had runners participating in 15 events, aided no doubt by the bank holiday and the glorious sunny conditions. First finisher results went to Niamh Corby, Darina Scully, Catherine Thornton and Lisa Shine, whilst podium places were also recorded by Olwyn Dunne, Kieran Little, Niamh Quinn Diarmuid Byrne and Kris Ryan. The numbers were down this week in Cabinteely after the excitement of Sonia O’Sullivan’s participation last week, but still there was a higher field than usual. Niamh Corby came home in 3rd place overall, first woman finisher, in a time of 20:37. Niamh was followed home by Harp Bhambra (142nd overall, 59th woman, in 45:47). Then, in Knocknacarra, Catherine Thornton, on the back of a busy week, still managed to take 6th place overall, first woman finisher, in a time of 19:48. Darina Scully placed 13th overall, first woman finisher, in River Valley in a time of 23:30, whilst Lisa Shine placed 7th overall, first woman finisher, in Tullow in a time of 23:36. In his warm up for the following day’s Limerick half marathon, Kieran Little placed 2nd in Clarisford in a time of 19:21, whilst Olwyn Dunne placed 12th overall, 2nd woman home, in 24:15 in the second running of a parkrun in Avondale. In Tolka Valley, Diamruid Byrne and Maria Pertl continue to bring their times down. Diarmuid was 3rd in 21:16, whilst Maria was 22nd overall, 7th woman, in 26:59.
