The report starts with last week’s BHAA 5k beach run on Sandymount Strand at low tide on Tuesday. Unfortunately, it clashed once again with training on Tuesday night, so that the amount of Crusader participation was minimal at 6 runners and the overall number of competitors was relatively low at 127 (somewhat close to the levels Crusaders used to get for its annual Bloomsday 5k run in the same spot a few years ago and before we took back full control of the Docklands race). It’s a shame that it is so poorly supported, as it’s a fun event and, in keeping with BHAA tradition, there’s always a good spread to follow.
On a windy but mild evening, and on the usual 2 lap course, Karl Walsh distinguished himself in the race with an excellent time of 18:02 for 3rd place, followed by Patrick Needham who ran 20:04 for 12th place. Patrick reported that there was a strong headwind on the way out and thankfully becoming a tailwind on the return. There was usual soft sand and also pools of water to navigate, but still highly enjoyable. Patrick was followed by Phelim Murray (28th in 21:36), Robbie Moore (39th in 22:19), Mairead Cashman (107th in 29:19) and Fiona Lane (113th in 30:18). On the same evening the latest edition of the Bob Heffernan 5k took place in Co. Meath as the 3rd race in the 2019 Kia Race Series. By all accounts, it is a fast race and each of our 3 participants recorded a PB. In a field of 628 and where 235 runners broke 20 minutes, Brian Scanlan ran 18:07 for 118th place, followed by Cormac McGuire (19:34 for 201st) and Paul F. Kelly who ran 19:44 for 217th place. The attraction of this race could also have had an impact on the BHAA event on the same night. A day later, we had club mates participate in the local Dublin mountains IMRA race. This occasion was the Three Rocks Summer race contested over a distance of 8.5k with a climb of 344m on difficult terrain, but on a warm and calm evening. 212 runners took part, reflecting the popularity of mountain running at this time, and we had at least 9 Crusaders in the fray. Jason Kehoe was our first athlete across the finishing line, in 6th place in a time of 41:12, followed by John McAuley who placed 22nd in 46:25. Next came the dependable Michael Maughan (41st in 48:51), followed by Brian McGuckin who continues to improve following injury (51st in 49:34) and who took the 6th O/50 spot. Gavan Doherty has continued to race a bit in recent weeks and he placed 54th in 50:11, followed by Karl Walsh who was suffering a little after his beach effort the evening before (61st in 50:54). Dorothy Maguire led the Crusader women home, placing 114th overall (11th woman finisher) in 57:59, followed by Kate Murray (117th and 12th in 58:17), who also took 5th place in the O/40 competition, and Claudine Hughes, inspired, like Kate, by the WWR effort of the week before (125th and 15th in 59:08). Like the first swallow of summer, Freddy Sittuk has now returned to these shores and, along with fellow Kenyan Peter Somba, is likely to dominate the podiums during the coming months. Freddy’s first race of the season was one of the Runs with Ray (Darcy) that took place over the weekend. The race in question was organised by Sliabh Buidhe AC down in Craanford in Wexford on Sunday. In windy conditions, Freddy won the race beating 199 other runners in the process and recording a time of 15:30. We had just one runner in the race, but she acquitted herself well. Dee Ni Chearbhaill crossed the line in 36th place overall (4th female finisher) but more importantly, 1st F40, winning a highly unusual trophy into the bargain. The appropriately named Windmill (10k) Run took place in Garristown Co Dublin on Sunday, also in windy conditions. Paul Dempsey was our only participant, taking a creditable 4th place in a field of 195 and in a time of 38:25. On a weekend in which the veteran runner, Tommy Hughes, who will turn 60 in January, won the Newry Half marathon in an incredible time (a new world record for a 59-year old) of 1:11:57, we had one athlete in the Edinburgh half marathon on Sunday. In rainy conditions and in a field of nearly 11000 runners Kieran Martin came home in 156th place in an excellent 1:24:53. We had some noteworthy results in the parkruns on Saturday morning. In Mallow Town, Ronan Moynihan was first finisher in 19:07, whilst Eddie Nugent, just across the border from his native county Waterford, in Clonmel, was also a first finisher in 18:20 (Maureen McGinley also ran there, placing 36th overall, 10th female, in 28:39). Finally, Dee Lawlor placed first in Shanganagh in 17:35, ahead of Orlaith de Burca (71st and 10th in 25:54). Other podium spots in parkruns went to Sarah Lyons and Brian Scanlan. Sarah ran in Fairview, placing 3rd (13th overall) in 23:13, whilst Brian placed 3rd in River Valley in a time of 19:45. With Sarah in Fairview was Anthony Owens who took 10th spot in 21:53. Just off the podium, David Carter placed 4th in Cabinteely in 19:53 (followed by Barry O’Mahony, 44th in 24:25), as was Kenan Furlong who placed 4th in Poolbeg in 18:46. In fact, we had 15 Crusaders take part in Poolbeg. Kenan was followed by Gavan Doherty (8th in 19:26), Paul Fox (18th in 21:09), Russell Murphy (32nd in 22:26), Olwyn Dunne (42nd and 5th in 23:06), Sharon Woods (55th and 10th in 24:02), Ali May Hann (66th and 12th in 24:31), Cathal Murphy (75th in 24:48), Ava Rose Clarke (79th and 15th in 25:09), Kate Healy (88th and 19th in 25:41), Gillian Curran (90th and 20th in 25;48), Karla Woods (112th and 29th in 27:23), Paul E. Kelly (113th in 27:43), Mary Dolan (114th and 30th in 27:44), Ciara McElligott (151st and 47th in 33:07) and Fiona Bane who was acting as tailwalker. Another 4th place finisher was Cormac McGuire who ran in Tolka valley and recorded a time of 19:58. Elsewhere, Mari hansen joined over 100 runners on the Isle of Man, and finishing in 33rd and 5th in a time of 25:56 in the Nobles parkrun on the island. Lisa and Mairin Shine took on Royal Canal Kilcock and placed respectively 37th (and 11th) and 83rd (and 39th) in times of 27:58 and 38:27. Meanwhile, Luke Davis placed 10th in Marlay in 18:52, followed by Killian Barry (16th in 19:29), Barry O’Neill (69th in 22:02) and Jonathan Sykes (74th in 22:10). Colm Foley took on Griffeen, placing 55th in 23:56, whilst Zlatko Kulic ran in St. Anne’s, placing 9th in 19:19, followed by Paul F. Kelly (259th in 27:450 and Aoife Kelly (297th and 101st in 28:53). Lastly, Maria Pertl and Diarmuid Byrne ran more or less side by side in Poppintree, where they placed respectively 79th (and 28th) and 80th in times of 32:16 and 32:17. What an action-packed weekend! It’s hard to know where to start. On Sunday, and the day after a super evening celebrating the 77th anniversary of the club at a dinner in the Hilton, several of us headed up to the Mary Peters track outside Belfast, which is in a beautiful setting in a wooded park. The occasion was the first round of the National League, which the men have won in the recent past and in which the women, in the next division down and looking for promotion, were competing for the second year in a row. Conditions were cool and we were only affected by the odd passing shower. The teams had solid contributions from all who participated, some doubling up on disciplines and distances which were not their norm and in which they may have been outside of their comfort zones. Great examples of this were Maria Hetherington who for a second year in a row took on the field events of hammer (where she recorded a PB!) and discus, and Fiona Shine, who stepped off the track at the end of the 1500m only to step back on (and onto blocks to boot following quick instruction) immediately to run the 400m with lactic everywhere! Fiona was the only 1900m specialist on the day! As a result of the team’s efforts the men are lying 2nd after the 1st round (and it’s the aggregate scores of two rounds that determine which of the 8 teams will contest the final) and the women are so far 7th or 8th (some mistakes in the official scoring need to be rectified). So we need as many athletes as possible to turn out for the second round on 30th June to be held either on the track in Athlone or Santry. Hats off to the following 21 athletes who did their bit: Shane Keane, Nick Ennis, Andrew Mellon, Fearghal O’Hare, Gary Park, Valentino Goularas, Sam Gaine, Oisin Taylor, Jonny Bell and David Heavey, whilst in the women’s team we saw Alix Hughes, Lisa Shine, Lauren Kirwan, Lara Murray, Ariana Francis, Nadine Deehan, Fiona Shine, Catherine Thornton, Rebecca Fleming, Maria Hetherington and Ines Fetahovic. We had some excellent performances with first places in the men’s relays (both 4x100 and a truly exciting 4x400 where we came from behind to take the victory), men’s discus (Sam) and shot put (Jonny), and 2nd places in the men’s 400m (Andrew), triple jump (Oisin) and 56lb weight throw (Sam). In the women’s events we had four 2nd places (1500m walk (Lisa), 3000m (Catherine, just a few seconds off a PB), 1500m (Fiona) and 200m (Alix)) and three 3rd places in the shot (Alix), 400m (Fiona) and the 4x100m relay. Sticking to the track, we also saw some great running on Saturday afternoon in the IMC meet at Irishtown stadium, incorporating the GV Ryan event arranged by the club. In the mixed mile 1 race which included both Crusaders and Front Runners Tomas Bradley led from gun to tape in his first attempt at the distance recording 4:44.27. He was followed by Paul Reidy (5th in 5:11.95), Philip Matthews (10th in 5:34.03), Antonios Gkogkakis (13th in 5:46.05), Ciara Lynch (15th in 6:04.55), Rebecca Fleming (16th in 6:05.67), a day before taking on the 800m in the league, Fintan Lawler (17th in 6:11.17), Emer Kenny (19th in 6:23.92) and Louise Van Wiedermeersch (21st in 6:54.30). In the women’s 800m A standard, Mary Horgan ran a super 2:14.30 for 6th place in a photo finish with the 5th place runner, local rival Clare Earls of Sli Cuallan. We had 4 runners in the men’s 5000m B race: Michael Kiely placed 6th in 15:57.99, followed by Italo Giancaterina (7th in 16:03.89), Stephen Hurley (8th in 16:13.41) and Joe McDermott (9th in 17:08.25). In the mile 2 race Paul Kelly recorded a PB placing 8th in 7:25.57. Then, in the 1500m B standard, Michael O’Conor ran 4:12.39 to place in the thick of it, as did Fearghal O’Hare (another league runner the following day) who placed 5th in the 800m men’s A standard. Fearghal’s time was 1:54.38. Finally, the performance of the day went to Rachael Yorke who drove herself to the line full of lactic in the women’s 800m B race, placing 3rd in 2:27.56, quite likely a PB. Earlier in the week, several of our club-mates took part in the 2nd graded meet, in Tallaght this time. John Healy won his 1500m D1 grade race in a time of 4:44.27, followed by Paddy Murphy (2nd in 4:53.57), Tomas Bradley (6th in 5:04.10), Brendan Glynn (8th in 5:34.83) and Paul Kelly (9th in 6:50.20). In the 5k grades A through E, Italo Giancaterina placed 3rd in 16:05.08. In the women’s 1500m grade B1 Fiona Shine placed 6th in 5:09.55, followed by Serena Moloney (8th in 5:22.36), whilst in the same distance grade C1, Emer Kenny ran 5:56.17 for 5th followed by Dorothy Maguire (6th in 6:03.52). Then, in the 1500m grade C2, Rebecca Fleming placed 5th in 5:33.79, followed by Lisa Shine (7th in 5:50.63). On the roads last week we had 1 runner in the Ras Benildus 5k in Stillorgan on Friday evening. Niall Murphy joined nearly 460 other runners and placed 6th in 18:08. On Saturday, we also had runners in the Calcutta Runs (5k and 10k plus races starting and finishing in Blackhall Place after passing through the Phoenix Park). One or two of our colleagues just ran the race for training purposes and did not seek to be competitive. Those who did race were led home in the 5k by Dee Lawlor (3rd in 17:45), followed by Luke Haran (18th in 20:37) and Serena Moloney (19th overall and 3rd woman home, in 20:43). In the 10k with its field of 370 runners, Peter O’Toole was first Crusader across the line, placing 3rd in 36:36 (10k = 35:13), followed by Paul Dempsey (5th in 37:31; 10k = 36:03) and Brendan Glynn (51st in 45:39; 10k = 43:46). On Sunday Michael Wycherley took part in the Tallaght 5k. On a fast course and in a field of 384 runners Michael crossed the line in 21st place and a time of 17:04. We also had a runner in the Riga marathon on Saturday, with Conor Parle experiencing temperatures rising to 27 degrees. Conor was delighted to finish in such circumstances and ran 4:04:19. Robbie Moore ran in Belgium in the 40th running of the Brussels 20k on Sunday morning. He experienced much better temperatures than Conor and felt the conditions were excellent and enjoyable, running negative splits (1st 10k in 47:51) for a time of 1:34:55. Pat Quill, meanwhile, took part in the Transylvania 100 where he ran the ultra in just over 20 hours. We also had a lot of activity in the mountains. Midweek saw 7 of our athletes participate in the Bray Head 6.85k trail race, involving a 270m climb on moderately difficult terrain. Warren Swords led our contingent across the line, placing 10th in 31:34 (2nd M40), followed by Jason Kehoe (14th in 32:16), John McAuley (20th in 33:28), Donatas Jocius (35th in 35:36), Anthony O’Reilly (61st in 38:04), Brian McGuckin (76th in 39:23) and Berndt Heim (225th in 53:45). Then, on Saturday we fielded an all-women’s team in the Wicklow Way Relay. They are clearly stepping up a gear and working their way up the rankings as they managed to finish in 23rd place this year after being last the year before. The team was comprised of Mairead Cashman, Lisa Shine, Fiona Shine (both who took part in the league the following day), Anna Shine, Claudine Hughes, Kate Murray, Aine Kenny (who ran the half marathon leg 7 recording a new female record for the leg, beating the previous one by 4 minutes) and Olwyn Dunne. We also had other club-mates running for other teams. On leg one, John McAuley placed 9th, followed by Becky Quinn (15th and 1st female). Warren Swords placed 4th on leg 5, whilst Brendan Murphy of the overall winning team placed 2nd on leg 6, followed by Andrea Talpo (5th). Not so many parkruns to record this week. Eddie Nugent was a first finisher in Cabinteely in 19:12, followed by Luke Davis came 2nd in 19:36. Kris Ryan was also a first finisher in her native Queensland. In a field of 48 in Yeppoon, Kris placed 5th overall in 22:51. In Bushy Park, Zlatko Kulic took 2nd place in 19:28, whilst Orlaith de Burca placed 5th (50th overall) in 25:09 in Shanganagh. Ronan Moynihan placed 5th in Malahide in 18:15, followed by Brian Scanlan (37th in 20:48), whilst Kieran Martin ran 19:04 for 14th place, followed by Phelim Murray (71st in 21:52) in St. Anne’s. In Marlay, Jonathan Sykes placed 49th in 21:30, followed by Barry O’Neill (79th in 22:53), Paul F. Kelly (274th in 27:18) and Aoife Kelly (285th and 63rd in 27:29). In Glasgow Aidan Hudner joined more than 400 runners to place 65th in 21:39, whilst Cormac McGuire ran 21:27 to place 4th in Tolka Valley. Finally, we had 5 runners in Poolbeg: Fiona Bane placed 50th and 6th in 23:21, followed by Mari Hansen (73rd and 9th in 24:56), Ava Rose Clarke (93rd and 17th in 25:55), Aisling O’Connor (99th and 19th in 26:23) and Maureen McGinley (136th and 37th in 29:36). The quality of the after-race fodder was enough to make it a memorable day, but the racing was excellent too. It was won by the same duo who won in the Limerick Half marathon last weekend. Peter Somba (24:11) finished the race way out on his own after having shaken off the quality runner from the North, Mark McKinstry (24:39) in the second of the two laps that runners had to complete on what is a generally flat course, despite a couple of drags in the 2nd/4th mile and in the last 800m towards the finish. The breeze was relatively gentle too on what became a warm day. The women’s race was won unsurprisingly by Siobhan O’Doherty (28:08), vocally reluctantly wearing number 13, but which proved to be lucky for her. We had a super turnout of 40 athletes and were rewarded with three 4th place finishes for our two senior and women’s masters’ teams and a second place for the men’s masters’ team of Warren Swords (a last minute entrant), Frank Hague and veteran Rob Cross. As a club we have a tradition of doing well in this competition, our male masters’ teams having won in at least each of the past two years. In a field of 1248 runners, the teams’ performances were excellent. Making a welcome return to racing, Albin Ingmarsson was our first runner across the line in 14th place (27:35) and right behind him in 16th came Adam Flanagan (27:42) who tracked Albin all the way. Slightly further back came Warren (21st in 28:19), followed by a flying Stephen O’Kennedy (26th in 28:33) and Frank (31st in 28:45). Rob followed Frank to complete the master’s team (49th in 29:50), meaning that we had 6 runners in the top 50 at the finish. Another athlete returning to the competitive fray, Jonathan Claridge, was next in 73rd (30:55) and other runners to place in the top 100 were Ollie McGrath (76th in 30:41), Graham Crowley (79th in 30:46), Rory Goldsmith (80th in 30:56) with a possible PB, Eddie Nugent (81st in 30:55) and our first female competitor across the line, Catherine Thornton (99th and 13th woman finisher in 31:54), who had a steady race. Top 200 places overall and sub 35 minutes went to Zlatko Kulic (110th in 32:03), Thomas Martini (111th in 32:13), Luke Haran (125th in 32:42), Tim O’Donnell (155th in 33:43), Gian Piero Allerta (177th in 34:13) and Phelim Murray (186th in 34:22). After that we saw some excellent runs from our female clubmates with Ciara Lynch following Catherine home in the senior team (234th overall and 36th woman in 35:12). Ciara had Aoife Clarke behind her (295th and 51st in 36:27) who came in alongside Joe Dunne (296th in 36:24). Olwyn Dunne followed her husband across the line in 308th place overall (53rd female and 7th F50) in 36:42 and Olwyn was followed by Maria Kennedy who had a strong run (349th and 64th in 37:37), pursued by a charging and inveterate competitor, Maria del Carmen Jimenez Campos (355th and 69th in 37:32). Behind Tim Hyland (386th in 38:10) came Aoife Kelly (393rd and 81st in 38:23), with Russell Murphy (421st in 38:38) not so far behind. Top 200 finishers in the women’s race included Liz Nixon (426th and 92nd in 38:46), Sharon Woods (429th and 94th in 38:45), Mary Fitzsimons (455th and 108th in 39:32), Mari Hansen (514th and 131st in 40:46), Aoife Cowhie (580th and 155th in 41:36) and Carina Davidson (600th overall, 165th woman, in 40:57). The contingent was completed by Colm Foley (462nd in 39:10), Mary Dolan (710th and 228th in 44:00), Mairead Cashman (715th and 232nd in 44:12), Michelle Geoghegan (751st and 257th in 44:11), Paul E. Kelly (861st in 47:05), Iseult Ni Chuinneagain (892nd and 350th in 46:58) and Graham Farringdon-Christie (1029th in 49:39), also making a return to competition and ensuring that all our runners came home in under 50 minutes. Members will also be interested to hear that Sean Murphy, who trains with the club, placed 30th in a time of 28:47. There is only one other road race on which to report for this week. Last Wednesday, Eana Farrell recorded a PB in placing 40th in a field of 229 in the Leixlip 5k in a time of 19:42. Again, the overall race was won by Peter Somba (15:01), enjoying the start of his annual visit to Ireland, with 3 race wins in 7 days. We had quite a lot of runners participate on a cool, but calm, Saturday morning in the parkruns. Lisa Shine was a first finisher (25th overall) in Castletown in a time of 23:01, whilst there were podium places for Luke Davis (2nd in 19:36) and Olwyn Dunne (49th and 3rd in 25:23) in Cabinteely, Kate Murray (17th and 2nd in 24:29) in Lough Key, Anna Shine (7th and 2nd in 25:18) in Tyrrelstown and Orla Kennedy, on her way back (13th and 2nd in 21:21) in Brickfields. Brian Scanlan also took 3rd place in River Valley in 20:23. Elsewhere, Fiona Bane took 4th spot (22nd overall) in a time of 23:45 in Tramore, whilst Ronan Moynihan placed 4th in Malahide in 18:16. Running with Luke and Olwyn in Cabinteely was Tom Dunne who placed 12th in 21:09, whilst an improving Mairin Shine (141st and 58th in 38:03) joined daughter Lisa in Castletown. Katie McElroy took 7th place (40th overall) in Father Collins (25:55), whilst Colm Foley was also a sole representative of the club in Griffeen (38th in 24:01). We had 2 runners in Bushy Park. Mairead Cashman placed 96th and 30th in 28:34, followed by Zlatko Kulic who placed 136th in 37:44. Diarmuid Byrne took on Fairview and finished in 52nd place in 27:59, whilst further afield Paul F. Kelly, on a trip to support Leinster in the European Cup final, ran 25:11 (316th place out of 713 runners) in Newcastle. Paul’s wife, Aoife ran solo in Poppintree where she placed 46th and 16th in 27:27. Aidan Hudner ran with 432 other participants in Glasgow where he placed 61st in a time of 21:37. Our largest participations were in Poolbeg and Marlay. In the latter, Killian Barry placed 24th in 19:49, followed by Anthony O’Reilly (30th in 20:04), Jonathan Sykes (71st in 22:16) and Barry O’Neill (112th in 23:40). Finally, in Poolbeg, Kenan Furlong took 5th place in 18:43, followed by Russell Murphy (44th in 23:10), Donna Barry (75th and 16th in 24:46), Cathal Murphy (93rd in 26:13), Gavan Doherty (97th in 26:28), Maureen McGinley (128th and 64th in 28:57) and Mary Dolan, tailwalking. The first track races of the season were held in the Morton Stadium in Santry on the Mondo track there and we had 11 intrepid runners turn out for the occasion, focusing on 800m and 3000m events. In the AB1 women’s 800m Fiona Shine took 4th place in an excellent 2:31.47, followed by Rachael Yorke in 2:33.23 and Serena Moloney in 2:35.31. Then in the grade C2 Rebecca Fleming had a good outing, even after a faster start than intended, to take 3rd place in 2:42.27, followed by Lisa Shine in 6th (2:48.00), Maria Kennedy (7th in 2:48.26) and Emer Kenny (9th in 2:55.63). In the men’s 800m grade D, Paul E. Kelly ran 3:15.54 to place 9th. We then had 3 runners in the men’s 3k grade C1 race and the field was led home by Michael Wycherley running 10:15.56, followed by Eddie Nugent (4th in 10:36.38) and Brendan Glynn (9th in 12:04.60). On the same evening we also had a Crusader competing in the mixed weights hammer. Morgan Brennan took 3rd place in the 5kg event with a throw of 38.46m.
Sticking with track and field, arguably the event of the week was the IMC meet held on Saturday afternoon on Greystones’ 6 lane track. The stadium is in a slight bowl, so it’s quite sheltered and for the most part well protected against any wind. So, runners enjoyed sunny and relatively calm conditions. For most of the athletes it would have been the first outing of the season, so they were generally looking to give themselves a benchmark from which to work and for several it was a most satisfactory outing. The IMC events are organised by coaches Mike McGovern and Susan Walsh, and thanks to their diligence and the assistance of several Crusaders the events generally go like clockwork. Saturday was no exception. In the mixed 3000m Joe McDermott ran a super race holding on to Laura Shaughnessy and Barbara Cleary until the Donore Harrier surged away in the last lap. As a result with Barbara coming home in 4th in 9:38 and Laura (5th in 9:43), Joe was able to achieve a super PB of 9:46.91 in 6th place. In the men’s 3000m A2 race, Michael Kiely ran a solid 9:08.13 finishing in 14th place. Then, in the 1500m B standard, Michael O’Conor took on the distance for the first time, with an excellent 4:10.72 to take 6th place and passing a couple of runners in the home straight after being in mid pack for most of the race. We also had some good results in the 800m, with Mary Horgan recording a satisfying 2:14.34 and 6th place to start the season in the women’s 800m A, whilst Fearghal O’Hare also took 6th place in recording 1:54.16 in the men's A race. For Crusaders and others the blue riband event was the women’s 1500m A standard race, featuring Niamh Allen who took a few scalps in placing 3rd well clear of the pursuing rest of field in a great time of 4:27.84, behind Templeogue’s Nadia Power (4:21.07) and Michelle Finn of Leevale (4:24.23) and ahead of Jodie McCann of DCH (4:28.57). The race was also memorable for a world record from Anne Gilshinan in the F55 category. Up until the previous weekend the record stood at 4:51, but had been reduced in the previous few days to 4:48, so Anne had quite a mountain to climb, but she did it with aplomb, coming home in an amazing 4:45.65. Moving onto road racing, the week started on Wednesday evening with the BHAA 5k held on a one loop course on the campus of Bristol Myers Squibb in Ballycoolin, Dublin 15. Joe Walsh led our contingent across the line in 20th place in a field of 279 runners. Joe’s time was 17:52 and he was followed by Karl Walsh (25th in 18:04) and Alma Hanevy who took 3rd place in the women’s race (48th overall, in 19:06). Alma is really getting back to racing form after a frustrating enforced rest with plantar over the winter. Paul F. Kelly was next (68th in 19:46, a possible PB), followed by Katie McElroy (84th and 8th in 20:21), Gavan Doherty (91st in 20:35), just ahead of Robbie Moore (93rd in 20:36). On the same evening, Irene Gorman ran in a race down in Midleton in Cork where, in a field of 566 runners, she placed 47th overall and a close 3rd in the women’s race in a great time of 31:36. There were also several road races over the bank holiday weekend. On Saturday morning the National 5k took place in the Phoenix Park as part of the Irish Runner 5k. The race took place on a one lap course involving the Ordnance Survey Road, Furze Road and the Fairy Glen, so not particularly flat. We had just 3 runners in the race. Sharon Woods was first home in 25:57 (in 382nd place overall and 103rd woman) behind women’s race winner Catherina McKiernan, followed by Paul E. Kelly (483rd in 26:43) and Lorraine Fitzsimons (712th and 265th in 34:57) in a field of 875. The overall winner (but presumably not national champion) was Peter Somba who went on to race in Limerick in the half marathon the following day. On Sunday, Brian Scanlan recorded a PB in the Yapstone Drogheda 10k. In a field of more than 600 runners, Brian took 34th place in a time of 38:18, a 7 second improvement, on a bumpy course with a tough hill at the 7k mark. Then, we had several of our club-mates travel to Limerick for the Great Limerick Run events held there. We had just one member take on the marathon. Karl Walsh recorded a super time of 3:06:06 to place 62nd in a field of 837, whilst, in the half marathon we had 7 runners in a field of nearly 2,200. The overall race was won by Peter Somba, with the first woman home being Siobhan O’Doherty (something inevitable about both victories!). Our first runner home was Eugene McDonough, overcoming a recent injury and running an excellent 1:21:44 for 29th place. Eugene was followed by Ciarain Kelly (35th in 1:22:50), Bob Cahill (93rd in 1:27:50), Brian Kelleher (220th in 1:35:24), Dee Ni Chearbhaill (338th and 42nd in 1:37:33), Liz Nixon (690th and 126th in 1:48:41) and Leanne McAndrew (1968th and 768th in 2:23:56). Finally, in the 6 mile run, it was good to see Limerick native Rob Cross back to racing where he placed 9th in 36:28 in a field of over 5,400. Rob was followed by Paul Reidy in 12th (36:43) and Luke Haran (47th in 40:39). However, the story of the day was the Crusaders’ men’s marathon relay team which won the event in 2:32:16. The team was made up of Will Owens, James Murphy, Shane Collins and guest runner Kerryman Cian Murphy. On bank holiday Monday, we had just one runner in the ARC 10k held in the Phoenix Park. Emily Feighan distinguished herself, however, by winning the women’s race in a time of 45:09. In a field of 132, Emily placed 31st overall. Over the weekend, and on a holiday trip to Italy, Olwyn Dunne decided last minute to sign up for a marathon in L'Escala. Owing to gale force winds the marathon was cancelled but the half marathon went ahead all the same. Despite the horrendous winds, Olwyn finished the (Maratao Empuries) race in 1:47 and 3rd in her age category. Our intrepid runner reported that she loved the race, despite the conditions. Moreover, the goody bag contained anchovies. What more could one ask for? There was also some mountain running last week. On Wednesday evening, we had 3 runners in the Downshill Trail race. On easy terrain over a distance of 9.6k with a climb of some 400m, Ollie McGrath was our first runner home in 37th place in 54:21. In a field of 147, Ollie was followed by Laura Flannelly (48th and 3rd woman, in 55:28) and Berndt Heim (138th in 76:34). We had two first finishers in the parkruns on Saturday. Stephen Hurley beat the field in Poolbeg in a time of 17:53, whilst Luke Davis did likewise in Cabinteely in a time of 19:43. There was also a podium place for Ronan Moynihan (2nd in Malahide in 18:19). Further afield, Ali May Hann ran in Hout Bay in South Africa, where in a field of 97 runners, she placed 14th and 3rd in 26:08, whilst Michael Wycherley took 2nd place in a field of 322 in Bognor Regis and a time of 18:27. In Australia in Paradise Point Kris Ryan joined 238 other runners to pace 31st and 4th in 23:02, whilst in Victoria Park in Glasgow Aidan Hudner plaed 97th in a field of 470 in a time of 22:08. Joining Stephen in Poolbeg were Kenan Furlong (6th in 18:47), Zlatko Kulic (11th in 19:22), Lisa Shine (51st and 7th in 23:21), Fiona Bane (54th and 8th in 23:35), Ava Rose Clarke (78th and 15th in 24:44), Gillian Curran (81st and 17th in 25:06), Donna Barry (85th and 19th in 25:15), Anna Shine (92nd and 22nd in 25:33), Maureen McGinley (137th and 42nd in 29:25), Mari Hansen (142nd and 44th in 30:01) and Mairin Shine (183rd and 65th in 43:33), working her way back from a long term injury. Joining Ronan in Malahide was Darina Scully (363rd and 143rd in 54:23). Mairead Cashman ran in Poppintree where she placed 66th and 20th in 27:40, whilst Brian Scanlan warmed up for the following day’s 10k with a 13th place in 22:54 in River Valley. Aisling O’Connor placed 268th and 63rd in 26:47 in Marlay Park, whilst Colm Foley placed 47th in 24:10 in Griffeen Park. Aoife and Paul F. Kelly ran in Letterkenny on Saturday morning, where Aoife placed 34th and 8th in 26:58, with Paul just behind in 35th in 26:59. Irish Runner 5k (875) Overall place Name Cat.
