The week belongs to a lot of track and field with the report covering the 5th meet of the Dublin graded series in Tallaght, the British Milers Club in Watford, where we had two runners, and the 2nd round of the National league held in the Morton Stadium in Santry. Andrew Mellon’s exploits in the mixed 4x400 relay for Ireland in the European Games in Minsk were covered in last week’s report, which neglected to point out, however, that the team registered a new Irish record in the event. Congrats to Andrew. We start with the graded meet, held last Wednesday evening, in warm conditions. In the men’s 200m grade A1, Shane Keane placed 2nd in 21.90, followed by David Heavey (3rd in 22.91). In the women’s grade A1 800m, Katie Rogers ran a PB time of 2:21.26 for 5th spot, whilst in the C1 race of the same distance Sarah Lyons placed 4th in 2:37.42. In the men’s 800m races, Tomas Bradley finished in 2nd place in the C1 event in a time of 2:13.88, whilst, in the D standard, John Healy won in 2:23.90, followed by Brendan Glynn (5th in 2:36.04) and Paul E. Kelly (10th in 3:10.83). There were two 3,000m races on offer on the night and in the first, in which Fionnuala McCormack made an appearance (placing 8th in 9:16.09), Michael O’Conor was given 5th place in 9:11.47, followed immediately by a strong finishing Italo Giancaterina (6th in 9:16.09). In the 2nd race, the BC1 event, Eddie Nugent placed 16th in a PB time of 10:31.69. Members will be interested to learn that Lorraine Healy, who trains with the club, ran in another of the 800m races, coming home in 2:31.80. On Friday night Pablo Sanchez, our exile in Madrid, reported that he ran 15:49.49 in a 5,000m event, where he placed 10th. On a warm and balmy Saturday evening Fearghal O’Hare and Niamh Allen joined several other Irish athletes in the BMC meet in Watford. It was a wonderful occasion and those of us who were able to watch the more than 3 hour event were rewarded with some fantastic racing, enhanced by the international rivalry. Our two athletes both ran within about a second of their PBs, but experienced slightly different results. Fearghal, whose PB for the 800m is 1:53.31, ran a season’s best 1:54.01 for a storming 2nd place in in his 800m F grade race, with about 10 other runners. With 250m to go, Fearghal, who had been in 5th place on the first lap, took up the lead, pursued by a couple of other athletes on his shoulder. Although one of them succeeded in passing in the home straight, Fearghal managed to hold off another fast finishing runner at the line for his well-deserved 2nd place. Niamh took part in the women’s 1500m B race with a field of perhaps 16 runners, where she built up a small lead over the first 3 laps. At the bell, Niamh was lying in 2nd place, but with the eventual winner recording a time of 4:23, faster than Niamh’s PB of 4:26, it was always going to be a brave gamble and Niamh ultimately finished in 8th place and a time of 4:27.36. On Sunday, we fielded two teams for the second round of the National track and field league, in which some athletes move out of their comfort zones, competing in events that may be foreign to them. It looks likely that the men’s team has qualified for the final with 2nd place in the group. The team recorded maximum points in 3 events (the 400m hurdles (Jason Harvey), the long jump (Adam McMullen) and high jump (Oisin Taylor!)), three second place finishes in the 4x100m relay (Shane Keane, Sean Barry, David Heavey and Adam) the 800m (Kevin Woods) and triple jump (Oisin) and four third places in the 200m (Shane), the 5,000m (Kieran Little), hammer (Killian Barry) and discus (Jonny Bell). 4th places came in the 56lb (Adam), shot (Jonny) and 4x400m (Shane, Sean, David and Kevin), with 5th places in the 400m (Sean) and 100m (David). We also picked up 2 points in the javelin (David). One of our athletes, your correspondent James Cottle, took part for the first (and last) time in the men’s 3000m walk, having been given rigorous instruction the day before by Lisa Shine, an excellent race walker and captain of the ladies team. Owing to the vagaries of the event with its esoteric and seemingly unfathomable requirements, and despite confirmation from at least one judge on the way round that the athlete’s technique was sound enough, the athlete was traumatically disqualified (not the only one in the race, the other guy having also been DQ'd in Belfast in the first round and similarly mystified as to why) beyond halfway. Thankfully, the lost points did not affect the outcome of the event! No ill feelings towards the race-walking fraternity, of course but it has nipped a potentially blossoming race walking career in the bud. It looks also as though the women’s team has also qualified for the league final to be held in Tullamore on Saturday 20th July. The women’s team recorded maximum points amazingly in 6 events (100m hurdles (Alix Hughes), 1500m (Katie Rogers), 800m (Mary Hogan), the 4x 400m relay (Alix, Ciara Barry, Mary and Katie Barry), discus (Maria Hetherington) and shot (Alix). There were also 2nd place finishes for the 400m hurdles (Katie Barry) and 200m (Rhianna McCarthy), whilst there were 6 third place finishes in the walk (Lisa Shine), 4x100m (Alix, Ciara, Rhianna and Arianna Francis), 100m (Rhianna), long jump (Arianna) and javelin (Alice Aboud)). 4th places went in the 3,000m (Rebecca Fleming), hammer (Maria), high jump (Ines Fetahovic) and triple jump (Ines). Many congrats to team organisers Gary Park and Lisa Shine, whose dedication to duty was well rewarded! Over the weekend, we also heard that, in California, Olympian Colin Quirke has extended his Crusaders discus record to 60.09m. There were a few road races to report on last week. On Thursday evening, we had 4 athletes take part in the Clonee 10k, organised by Dunboyne AC. 50 of the nearly 400 runners in the field finished inside of 40 minutes and 3 of our club-mates were among them. John McAuley placed 16th in 36:35, followed by Frank Hague (20th in 36:42) and Padraig Sheehan (32nd in 38:36). They were also joined by Katie McElroy who ran a PB time of 43:28 (a 1 minute improvement) for 97th place overall and 8th woman across the line. The following day we had an even bigger showing in the most enjoyable St. Coca’s-organised Kilcock 5k. Nine Crusaders took part in that in that Kildare race, held in warm and humid conditions on a relatively flat and fast course. The event attracted 556 runners and the overall race was won by Conor Dooney of Raheny, just coming back from injury, in an extremely fast 14:13, with Peter Somba, winner of the previous night’s race in Clonee, in 3rd place. Unsurprisingly, Catherina Mullen of MSB won the women’s race in 16:29. Rob Cross led the club home in 24th place and 2nd in his age category in a time of 16:19. Ollie McGrath was next (122nd in 18:33), followed by Adrienne Jordan (130th overall, 11th woman and 3rd in her age category) in 18:52. Next across the line came James Cottle, recovering from injury and testing himself out (and nearly being taken out just after the start when 2 runners collided with each other and went down immediately in front of him). James ran negative splits in 20:10 for 211th place overall and 4th in his fiercely competitive age category (six M60s finished inside 21 minutes). Behind James came Gian Piero Allerta (257th in 20:58), followed by Dee Ni Chearbhaill (274th and 44th in 21:23), Amy McGuinness (325th and 64th in a highly satisfying 22:18), Emer Kenny (335th and 65th just behind in 22:29) and Miriam Logan (353rd and 75th in 23:00). There was a fine feast afterwards, in keeping with country road racing. Over the weekend, Olwyn Dunne reported that she took part in the Wexford Hospice festival of Running, where she ran 53km, with no ill effects, in celebration of her birthday. In the mountains on Wednesday, we had 4 Crusaders take part in a 9.45km attack on Sorrell Hill in Co. Wicklow. The race, an out-and-back on moderate to tricky terrain, started on decent forest trails, ascending on open mountain to the top with a swift return over the same route. Warren Swords, crossing the line in 7th place in a field of 187, and a finishing time of 45:30, was joined by Gavan Doherty (60th in 56:48) and Pat Quill (64th in 57:25). Brian McGuckin slightly turned an ankle in the race and was unable to finish. However, he has recovered since. Then, on Sunday, Becky Quinn took part in the Connaught Championships in Co. Mayo, running up and down Nephin Mountain, a distance of 5.3km and a climb of 736m on difficult terrain. As a result of her efforts, Becky is now the O/40 Connaught champion, having finished in 8th place overall, one place behind the overall winner of the women's race. There were no first finishers among our members this week in the parkruns, but a lot of near misses. In Shanganagh Rob Browne placed 2nd in 18:44. He was joined there by Janet McManus (76th overall and 16th female, in 26:27). Then, in St Anne’s, where Paul and Aoife Kelly respectively placed 268th and 305th (90th female) in 26:49 and 28:00, Peter O’Toole took 2nd place in 17:24. Fiona Bane also crossed the line in 2nd place (33rd overall) in 22:50, whilst Ronan Moynihan rounded off the podium positions with 2nd place in Mallow Town in a time of 18:59. A near podium miss came from Cormac McGuire in Tolka Valley where he placed 4th in 20:59. Further afield, Sarah Lyons ran in Uckfield in Sussex, placing 139th (and 51st) out of a field of 228 in 35:17, whilst Andrej Kujikis can 19:24 for 15th in a field of 339 in Southwark. Aidan Hudner once again ran in Glasgow where he placed 56th out of 398 in a time of 21:48, whilst, even further away, Kris Ryan ran in Paradise Point in Queensland Australia, taking 5th place (49th overall) in 23:05. Back at home, Brian Scanlan was our sole representative in Malahide where he placed 8th in 18:54, whilst, in Griffeen Park, Colm Foley ran 23:21 for 35th place. Tom Dunne was first Crusader in Cabinteely, placing 13th in 22:01, followed by Barry O’Mahony (20th in 22:57) and Niamh Quinn (65th and 15th in 26:43). Zlatko Kulic and Kate Murray ran in Bushy Park, where Zlatko took 9th place in 20:27 and Kate came across the line in 65th overall (7th) in 25:03. Mairead Cashman was singleton in Gorey where she ran 30:03 for 34th and 12th, whilst Liam Lyster was also on his own in Strokestown, where he ran 27:33 for 9th place. Finally, we had quite a decent turnout as usual in Poolbeg besides Fiona. David Timony ran 21:04 for 17th place and he was followed by David O’Donnell (22nd in 21:43), Antonios Gkogkakis (27th in 22:15), Russell Murphy (31st in 22:40), Aoife Cowhie (70th and 14th in 25:26), Cliodhna O’Reilly (84th and 20th in 26:20) and Mari Hansen (86th and 21st in 26:23). Although there was a heavy rain shower an hour before the gun, we were as usual blessed with good running weather, the westerly breeze proving to be more help than a hindrance to achieving decent times. Because so many members were involved in stewarding on the night, we had only a smattering of participants in the race itself, apart from the 11 pacers (who did a super job, their times speaking for themselves), and they acquitted themselves well. There were no new course records this year, particularly as the overall race winner, Dunboyne’s Peter Somba, was on his own for most of the race without anyone to push him, but, for the first time, AAI-affiliated clubs could compete for two trophies, the John Fitzsimons Cup for the winning male club team and the Mary Purcell Cup for the winning women’s team. The male winners for this inaugural event were Leevale, just seconds ahead of Sportsworld who generally fielded a significant contingent, whilst the women’s cup did unsurprisingly go to the Terenure-based club. Out of the Crusaders runners we did see in the race, of whom there were at least 9, we witnessed at least one PB, from David Carter, an organiser of one of our sponsors, who placed 107th in a field of 1,686 finishers, in a time of 18:52. Ahead of Dave came Luke Davis in 105th place but with a chiptime of 18:54. Gavan Doherty, another of our sponsors, placed 142nd in 19:36. Thomas Martini was next in 147th place with 19:40, followed by Phelim Murray (168th in 19:55). Another sponsor, Mike Stewart, placed 378th in 21:43, followed by Maria del Carmen Jimenez Campos (22:32 in 466th overall and 60th female finisher), Jean Devlin (958th and 200th in 25:37) and Mor Hazan (1,215th and 311th in 28:49). Then on Saturday, we had a decent turnout for the 40th running of the fast Dunshaughlin 10k, which had a large field reflective of the fact that it’s part of the 9 race Kia Series (runners needing to race at least 5 of the events). The race was won by DSD’s Hiko Tonosa by one second from Mick Clohisey whom he passed with 400m to go, with Peter Somba a further 45 seconds back, feeling the effects of his effort in Thursday night’s Docklands run. In 13th place, Fionnuala McCormack also had a super performance, breaking Lizzie Lee’s course record by running 32:17. Kieran Little was our first runner across the line in 17th place in a field of 940. Kieran ran 32:45 and he was followed by Rob Cross (51st in 34:46), who, on the line, undid Joe McDermott’s passing with about 400m to go (52nd in a fantastic 70 second improved time of 34:47). Joe Walsh was next in 82nd place in a PB time of 36:09, followed by Ciarain Kelly (110th in 37:08). Mick Smyth also ran a PB by placing 144th in 38:08, as did Ollie McGrath (151st in 38:20) and Alma Hanevy who placed 178th overall, 12th woman and 3rd in her age category, in a super time of 39:03. So, both Joe and Alma, husband and wife, recorded PBs in the same race. Michael Maughan was another runner to break 40 minutes, taking 190th place in 39:32 and he was followed by Gian Piero Allerta (296th in 42:43), Kate Murray (413th and 68th in 46:26) and Emma O’Mahony (571st and 140th) in 51:01. The race was also notable for Irish records for Paul Elliott as an M65 who ran 38:32 and for Tommy Hughes, holder of the 5k, half marathon and marathon world records for a 59-year old who was going for a world record in the 10k. He missed out on that by 4 seconds, with his spectacular time of 33:13 for 24th place, enough, however, for the Irish record at least. We also had runners in other races during this time. The day after Docklands the 8th running of the Dublin Pride 5k took place. Conducted on a mixture of grass and asphalt, with two laps of the Phoenix Park’s 15 Acres where we train on Saturdays, it enjoyed a field of 878 on Friday night. Seamus Moore was the first Crusader to cross the finish line in 17:38, followed by Marius McNicholas, making a welcome return to racing, in 47th (19:37) and Dee Ni Chearbhaill (107th overall and 9th woman home) in 21:45. Then on Saturday, Bob Cahill was our sole representative in the Waterford Viking half marathon where in a field of 975, Bob placed 107th in a time of 1:29:30. Leo Lundy helpfully reported that Kris Ryan was one of only 3 finishers in the Brisbane Valley 200 mile race in Queensland, Australia, over the weekend, whilst on Saturday he competed in the national 24 hour championships in Belfast for 50km and his 95th ultra-marathon. There was also some great track athletics over the weekend. Mike McGovern and Susan Walsh were accompanied by a gang from the club helping out in Belfast at the Mary Peters Track for the annual meet there of the Irish Milers Club, where some solid performances from our runners were recorded. In the A standard 5000m Michael Kiely recorded a possible PB with his 10th place finish in 15:26.42, whist Italo Giancaterina also ran well in the B standard of the same distance with 3rd place and 15:55.15. Michael O’Conor placed 7th in 4:12.75 in the 1500m C race, whilst in the women’s 1500m Niamh Allen recorded a PB of 4:26.23 for 5th place in a strong field. Kevin Woods maintained his form by running a season’s best 1:51.36 in the 800m A standard race with a 5th place finish, whilst Fearghal O’Hare found himself getting closer to Joe Warne in the 800m B race, placing 2nd in 1:54.58, another possible PB. Another SB was recorded by Mary Horgan who ran 2:13.58 and placed 2nd in the women’s 800m B standard race. On Sunday, we heard that in the same stadium Adam McMullen is making further improvement as he returns from a major Achilles injury by jumping 7.43m. Late news is that at the weekend Andrew Mellon joined Brandon Arrey, Sinead Denny (who trains in Irishtown) and Catherine McManus to represent Ireland in the 4x400m relay at the inaugural European Games in Minsk in Belarus under the format of Dynamic New Athletics (DNA). The team took a creditable 4th place in a time of 3:24.37 and added 6 important points to the country's total. Some of our members took part in the weekly IMRA league race on Wednesday. This time, the event was the Powerscourt Uphill which required an ascent of Djouce, a total climb of nearly 700m over a race distance of 6.5km. Warren Swords led our contingent across the line in 10th place in a field of 181. Warren’s time was 43:22, and he was followed by Pat Quill (53rd in 50:32) and Anthony O’Reilly (54th in 50:34) pretty much together, just ahead of Brian McGuckin (64th in 52:00). Gavan Doherty was next (85th in 55:21), limbering up for Docklands the following evening, followed by Laura Flannelly (98th overall and 10th female in 56:20) and Dorothy Maguire (129th and 20th in 61:35). We had runners in 11 parkruns on Saturday morning. In the UK, Mari Hansen participated in the 163-strong field in the Gunpowder Parkrun in Waltham Abbey in Essex, placing 50th and 9th in 25:55, whilst Eileen Coughlan placed 57th and 9th in the 213-strong field of Harcourt Hill in Oxford. Our first finishers on Saturday were Ronan Moynihan in Marlay (18:22, exactly the same as he recorded last week), James Cahill in Lough Key (18:27) and Adam Flanagan in Poolbeg (17:31). Podium places went to Barry O’Mahony (3rd in Cabinteely in 19:43), Aoife Kelly (25th and 2nd in 23:01 in Bushy Park) and Kenan Furlong (2nd in Poolbeg to Adam in 18:30). In Bushy Park, Paul F. Kelly placed 11th in 20:50, followed by Mairead Cashman (109th and 39th in 29:35). In Ballincollig Barry O’Neill placed 50t in 22:13, whilst Peter O’Toole took 4th place in St. Anne’s in 17:32. Brian Scanlan took 10th spot in Malahide in 19:40, whilst Killian Barry placed 6th in 19:15 in Marlay. Even the IMRA mountain race came close to being a 5 mile competition.
We start with the Irish Runner 5 mile race, incorporating the national championships, which took place on a sunny and breezy Saturday morning in the Phoenix Park, on a challenging winding course that took in the north end of the park as well as a descent of the Furry Glen coming back up the steep hill onto the Upper Glen Road and finishing on Furze Road. There was, surprisingly perhaps, not a huge field at just under 1300 participants, but we fielded 13 athletes all the same, with some excellent results. Unexpectedly, Michael Kiely took 12th place in a PB time of 26:02, followed by Italo Giancaterina, whose excellent 19th place in 27:00 unfortunately did not count in the national championships, and the team placed 4th, whereas if his time had been included the team would have finished in bronze medal position. Italo was followed closely by John Mulvihill in 23rd and a great time of 27:09, with Rob Cross and Michael Wycherley in an interesting battle together further back. Michael had been passed by Rob on the Furry Glen hill in the later stages of the race and made a valiant attempt to catch him in the last few hundred metres. It was not to be but both came away with some spoils. On his birthday, Rob took 2nd M45 (47th in 28:49) with Michael on his shoulder in the bronze position in the same age category (48th in 28:50). James Cahill was next in 77th place in a PB time of 29:42, which again was surprising as James felt he had blown up somewhat after too fast a start. Adrienne Jordan was the next Crusader to cross the line (119th overall in 31:39) in her first race for a while. Unfortunately, although Adrienne finished in 7th place in the women’s race, like Italo she had not entered the national competition. If she had, she would have finished in silver medal position in her age category. Adrienne was followed by Damien Fitzgibbon (171st in 33:13) and by Maura Mahoney (287th overall, 41st woman, in 36:10), Jemma Lyons (289th and 43rd in 35:58) close behind. The next runner to cross the line was James Cahill’s sister, Susie Keeling, who recently joined the club and was running her first race in about 20 years. Susie finished in a highly respectable 39:00 for 529th place overall (and 123rd) and she was followed by Jean Devlin (639th and 169th in 42:42) and Siobhan Russell (694th and 188th in 43:40). Earlier in the week, on Wednesday evening, the BHAA held its annual visit to the same park for a trail run around the cricket pitches and a couple of club houses between the Khyber Pass and Chesterfield Avenue (on the site, as we later discovered, of an enormous Star Fort that was in existence in the early 1800s). The course has changed slightly over the years and it is less hilly (the trench that used to be crossed has now been bypassed). It was reported that the long wet grass on the course, following the day's rain, however, made it challenging, even though the evening was dry. Sean Doran enjoyed a dogfight with Eoin Callaghan to win by one second in 16:25, with Linda Byrne coming out in front in the women’s race (13th overall, in 18:10). In a smallish field of 142, our first club mate home was Karl Walsh (8th in 17:40 and first in his age category). Karl was followed by Joe Walsh (11th in 18:00 and 2nd in the same category). Ollie McGrath was our third runner home in 25th (19:38), followed closely by Alma Hanevy who podiumed once again (27th overall and 2nd woman across the line in 19:53). It was good to see that Enda Currid is back to competitive running following injury, placing 37th in 20:15 and Enda was followed by Robbie Moore (62nd in 21:58), Kate Murray (82nd and 19th and 2nd F45 in 23:24) and Emma O’Mahony (104th and 20th in 25:04). On the same evening, Dublin Athletics held the 4th graded meet of the season on the track in the Morton Stadium in Santry. We had a number of participants. In the men’s A1 race of the unusual distance of 2000m, Michael Mallin placed 6th in 7:44.17, whilst in the women’s 100m B1 race, Alix Hughes ran 13.23 for 5th place (Alix also took on the shot put where she placed 3rd with a throw of 9.69m). David Heavey took 4th in 11.31 and Sean Barry took 5th in 11.41 in the men’s 100m A1 standard, whilst Shane Keane ran 11.00 for 3rd in the A2 race of the same distance. Shane and David were again in action in the 40m A2 race, where Shane won in 50.81 and David placed 6th in 53.69. Ronan Moynihan took on the 400m distance again in the C1 race, where he placed 3rd in 60.23. In the women’s 1500m B1 event Fiona Shine placed 6th in 5:10.99, whilst we had 4 runners in the women’s C1 1500m. In a tactical race, Rebecca Fleming ran 5:36.12 to place 3rd, followed by Sarah Lyons (5th in 5:40.78), Grainne Regan (6th in 5:43.58) and Emer Kenny (9th in 5:53.45). The remaining track event in which we had Crusader participation was the men’s 1500m D1 race. Brendan Glynn finished in 4th place in 5:32.34, followed by Paul E. Kelly (6th in 6:57.60). Finally, Bernard Morgan threw the 5kg hammer 35.75m for 3rd place in this field event. On the same evening on a course of 8.25km, we had 6 Crusaders take part in the annual IMRA race on Scarr Mountain in Co. Wicklow, involving a challenging climb to the summit and back (an ascent of 383m). Warren Swords was our lead runner home in 9th place in a field of 173. Warren ran 41:33 and he was followed by Brian McGuckin (41st in 47:57), Anthony O’Reilly (47th in 48:13), Gavan Doherty (60th in 49:55), Pat Quill (85th in 53:14) and Berndt Heim (157th in 69:37). Back to road racing, and we had runners on Saturday and Sunday in at least two events. In the Arthurs Way 5k in Ardclough near the Lyons Estate in Co. Kildare, Paul and Aoife Kelly joined nearly 560 other runners. In his first victory of the weekend Peter Somba came home in 16:52, whilst Paul ran 21:42 for 36th place and Aoife, 23:57 for 65th overall (10th woman). Then, on Sunday, in slightly windy conditions again, the Dunboyne athlete won his 2nd race in as many days. This was the Castleknock 5k where he ran 15:09. Dee Lawlor was our first athlete home in a field of 928. Dee’s time was an excellent 17:20, gaining him 4th place and 1st in his age category. He was followed by Donal Foley who took 120th spot in 23:52. Leo Lundy reported that he ran 2 ultra-marathons in the UK during the week (3 including the one he ran last weekend). The first required a run of 11 laps around the Olympic rowing lake course within Eton College and the 2nd involved a midnight start for a 12 hour race at the Suffolk Trail Fest in Simpling in Suffolk. We had some good results in the parkruns on Saturday morning. Poolbeg was understandably our most successful, where both Kieran Little and Aine Kenny were first finishers, Kieran running 16:27 and Aine, 21:02 (20th overall). In the same event Stephen Hurley placed 2nd in 17:47. Ronan Moynihan was also a first finisher, placing 2nd to Anne Kealy, in a time of 18:22 in Malahide, with Brian Scanlan not too far behind in 3rd in 18:38. Meanwhile, in Fairview, both Adam Flanagan and Sarah Lyons placed 2nd in their respective fields. Adam ran 18:17, whilst Sarah ran 23:46 for 20th place overall. Rob Browne took on Shanganagh whre he crossed the line in 3rd spot in 18:40, followed by Mairead Cashman (110th overall and 36th in 30:48). Kate Murray ran 24:07 for 4th place (38th overall) in Bushy Park, whilst Maria Pertl placed 6th (17th overall) in 28:34 in Tolka Valley (followed immediately by Diarmuid Byrne who ran 28:35 for 18th). Emma O’Mahony ran 25:54 for 53rd (and 9th) in Cabinteely, whilst Colm Foley placed 55th in Griffeen Park in a time of 23:53. Kieran Martin got himself in shape for his pacing duties in next week’s Docklands 5k race in St. Anne’s where he ran 19:44 for 18th place, whilst Killian Barry ran 19:25 for 11th spot in Marlay Park. Further afield, Kris Ryan ran in Queensland in the Main Beach parkrun where in a field of 312 runners she placed 57th overall (and 10th) in 24:20.Closer to home, Aidan Hudner ran in Glasgow where he took 58th spot in a field of 343 and a time of 21:32. In Co. Limerick Luke Haran ran in Mungret where he ran 20:19 for 7th place. Finally, returning to Poolbeg, Kieran, Stephen and Aine were joined by Tim Francony who placed 6th in 19:26, followed by Simon Kenny (11th in 19:58), David O’Donnell (22nd in 21:38), Ava Rose Clarke (53rd and 8th in 24:35), Gillian Curran (71st and 14th in 25:49), Cliodhna O’Reilly (76th and 19th in 26:13), Mari Hansen (94th and 30th in 28:01), Maureen McGinley (103rd and 32nd in 29:03), Ciara McElligott (113th and 38th in 30:57) and Fiona Bane tailwalking. Shane Keane ran in the B grade of both the 100 and 200 metres, placing 2nd in the 100m in 10.77 and winning the 200m in 21.99. Valentinos Goularas also took part in the 100m where he took 5th spot in 11.05. Alix Hughes also competed in two events. In the Long Jump she placed 2nd with a leap of 4.69m and then went on to win the 200m B standard race in 27.55. In the men’s 800m B Fearghal O’Hare took 3rd place in 1:55.52, whilst in the strong women’s A field of international quality Niamh Allen placed 8th in 2:14.63. Katie Rogers and Fiona Shine took on the 800m women’s B standard race, with Katie crossing the line in 4th in a time of 2:22.15, followed by Fiona in 9th place, in 2:28.30. The race was notable for having been won by Anne Gilshinan of Slaney Olympic in a new world record time for an O/55 in 2:19.63 (her 2nd WR in as many meets). Michael O’Conor continued to participate in 1500m races, placing 9th in the mixed standard 1500m in 4:12.69, whilst Michael Kiely ran in the A standard 3,000m, finishing 14th in a time of 9:01.02. Finally, Joe McDermott was only a couple of seconds off a PB in the men’s 3,000m B race, where he finished 4th in 9:48.73. Results can be found here: https://www.irishmilersclub.org/results-page. Pablo Sanchez, our Spanish exile in Spain, reported that he became 1500m senior champion of Madrid over the weekend by running a time of 4:16.26, whilst Andrew Mellon became Northern Ireland senior champion in the 400m, winning in a time of 47.94. Dee Ni Chearbhaill and husband Sean Murphy, who trains with us, headed down to Kilmacow in Co. Kilkenny for the annual running of the 4 mile Little South Run. There may not have been any chip timing but, in a race won by Mick Clohisey in a time of 19:10, Dee ran 28:33 and Sean ran 23:34, both winning their respective age categories. Meanwhile, Leo Lundy reported that he took part in his 92nd ultra marathon over the weekend. This race was held on the Thames towpath near Henley and Leo finished 4th male. In the mountains midweek, we had a few of our clubmates take part in a race on Prince William’s Seat in the Wicklow Mountains. On a course with a climb of 364m over 8.4km on moderately difficult terrain, the race involved 174 runners. John McAuley led our contingent home in 41:35, followed by Brian McGuckin (28th and 6th M50 in 45:13), Anthony O’Reilly (37th in 46:05), Gavan Doherty (51st in 47:24) and Berndt Heim. We had at least one first finisher on Saturday in the parkruns. Catherine Thornton placed 8th overall in coming home in 1st place in a time of 19:58 in Knocknacarra in Galway. Meanwhile, there was a podium place for Frank Hague (2nd) in Porterstown where he ran 17:53. Kate Murray also placed 2nd (20th overall) in 23:40 in Lough Key, whilst Anthony Owens came home in 3rd place in 21:58 in Fairview. There were also 3rd place finishes for Lisa Shine in Corkagh (27th overall in 23:20), where she also ran with Mairin Shine (164th and 80th in 37:00) and for Brian Scanlan who ran in Carlow in a time of 20:46. Our best place finish in the huge contingent we had in Poolbeg, was Fiona Bane who placed 3rd (37th overall) in 22:52. Otherwise, the group was led home by Kenan Furlong who took 6th place in 18:58. Kenan was followed by David Timoney (8th in 19:36), Tim O’Donnell (10th in 20:17), Zlatko Kulic (16th in 20:56), Paul Fox (22nd in 21:33), Russell Murphy (36th in 22:49), Ali May Hann (58th and 11th in 24:09), Kate Healy (73rd and 17th in 25:11), Aisling O’Connor (81st and 22nd in 25:48), Cliodhna O’Reilly (86th and 25th in 26:20), Killian Stokes (94th in 27:08), Maureen McGinley (106th and 34th in 28:18), Mari Hansen (125th and 42nd in 29:56) and Iseult Ni Chuinneagain who provided the services of tailwalking. Ronan Moynihan ran in Malahide, where he placed 6th in 18:28, whilst Barry O’Neill ran in Naas, finishing in 25th place in a time of 21:52. Luke Davis took 11th spot in 19:24 in Marlay Park, followed by Anthony O’Reilly (15th in 19:43), whilst in St. Anne’s Paul F. Kelly ran 21:38 for 59th followed by Aoife Kelly (103rd and 16th in 23:26). Aidan Hudner took on Victoria Park in Glasgow again, where in a field of 445 he placed 61st in 21:19. The, in Cabinteely, Dave Carter ran 19:55 to record 4th place, whilst Darina Scully placed 99th and 31st in River valley where she ran 49:10. Finally, Mairead Cashman took on Bushy Park where she placed 132nd (and 35th) in 28:58. IMRA Prince William’s Seat (174) Overall place Name Cat. Something there for everyone. We start with track and field in Tullamore, where, on Sunday we had at least 3 athletes compete in the Leinster Masters championships. John O’Loughlin came away with 3 medals in his M50 category, gaining silver in the 200m (25.84) and 100m (12.69) and bronze in the 400m (58.66), whilst Neil Brown nearly did the same in the M50 category by winning silver in the shot put and bronze in both the discus and 56lb weight for distance (no details as yet provided, except for the weight by distance, where Neil threw 5.08m). Michael Wycherley took part in one event, the 5,000m, where he also won silver in his M45 category in a time of 17:23.78. Sticking with track, we had several Crusaders take part in the 3rd graded meet of the year, held this time in Irishtown. The results were as follows: In the 400m men’s A1 race, Fearghal O’Hare placed 4th in 53.15. Then in the C1 race of the same distance Ronan Moynihan placed 2nd in 59.33, followed by Dee Lawlor in his first attempt (66.44 for 5th place). These sprints were followed by a series of 800m races. Niamh Allen found herself in a field of modest size in the A1 event and as a result was not given much competition, easily winning in a time of 2:16.17. We had 4 athletes in the 800m B1 race, with Katie Rogers, just back from a slight knee injury, taking 3rd place in a super time of 2:24.66. Katie was followed by Rachael Yorke in 5th spot with another great time of 2:30:08, Fiona Shine hard on Rachel’s heels (6th in 2:30.47) and Serena Moloney a little further back (8th in 2:35.60). There were 3 other women’s races in which Crusaders featured, the first of which, the B2, involved an ever-improving Rebecca Fleming who placed 7th in 2:38.44 a little behind Lorraine Healy, who trains with the club, who placed 5th in 2:30.69. In the two C standard races, Sarah Lyons won the first in 2:43.33, followed by Dorothy Maguire (5th in 2:55.59) and Emer Kenny (6th in 2:57.18). Then, in the 2nd race, Lisa Shine placed 2nd in 2:45.01, followed by Maura Mahoney (3rd in 2:47.65) and Isabelle Cairns (4th in 2:51.36). We had runners in the 3 of the men’s 800m races. Fearghal O’Hare took on his second challenge of the night by placing 3rd in the A1 event in a time of 1:59.74, followed by Michael O’Conor who came across the line in 6th in 2:03.67. Tomas Bradley placed 4th in the C2 race in a time of 2:13.36, whilst Paddy Murphy won the D standard in a time of 2:20.68, followed by Brendan Glynn (6th in 2:41.64). Finally, in the men’s mixed standard 10,000m race (which also doubled as the Dublin championship 10,000m), won by Sean Hehir in 31:40.43, Italo Giancaterina acquitted himself well to place 4th in a super time of 33:44.86. There were two races in the mountains last week. One of them took place on Wednesday night on Carrick Mountain in Co. Wicklow and we fielded 5 participants in a field of 166. The race involved a climb of 427m (almost immediate and challenging) on moderate terrain over a distance of 6.0km. Warren Swords was our first runner home, placing 12th (5th M40) in 38:08, followed by Brian McGuckin (46th and 9th M50 in 44:13). Not too far behind came Gavan Doherty (56th in 45:24) and Anthony O’Reilly (57th in 46:01). The contingent was completed by Berndt Heim (153rd in 1:05:51). Warren and Brian turned out again at the weekend, this time in the first race of the Irish Championships on Saturday, held on Ireland’s highest mountain in the Macgillycuddy Reeks range in Co. Kerry. In foggy conditions toward the top and involving a distance of 12.5km and a climb of 1,137m, Becky Quinn excelled herself by winning the women’s race (25th overall) in a time of 1:50:48. In a strong field of 79 (it was also the Munster championships), Warren placed 22nd in 1:48:32, followed by Michael Maughan (61st in 2:33:07) and Brian (73rd in 2:53:18). The next race in the Irish Championships will be held on Mweelra in Co. Mayo at the end of June. We now move on to road racing which started last Tuesday with the BHAA Government Services 5 mile race in Dunboyne and concluded on Sunday with the Women’s mini marathon in Dublin. There was a substantial field for the BHAA race as usual, with more than 400 runners taking on a country road course which, because of refurbishment of the Dunboyne track, finished on grass in a field just behind the club. Following Mick Clohisey home on the night were at least 14 of our club-mates. There were several notable performances, none more so those of Alma Hanevy who came 2nd in the women’s race (85th overall) in 31:32 and Joe McDermott who knocked 29 seconds off his PB to come home in 17th place in a time of 27:44, the first time he has broken 28 minutes. Joe Walsh was next (40th and 5th M40 in 28:34), followed by John McAuley (42nd in 29:02), Karl Walsh (56th in 29:15), Ollie McGrath (68th in 30:41), Eddie Nugent (78th in 31:04), Michael Maughan, in the first of his two races during the week (79th in 31:06), Tom Dunne (131st in 33:24) and Robbie Moore (164th in 34:43). In the women’s race, Alma was followed by Kate Murray (225th overall and 9th F45 in 37:19), Emma O’Mahony (275th overall and 6th F35 in 39:58), Jean Devlin (310th overall and 9th F35 in 42:23) and Mairead Cashman (360th overall in 46:21). Members will be interested to hear that Sean Murphy of RunHub and United Striders who trains with us recorded 28:35 for 35th place. A few days later Seamus Moore took part in the Balbriggan Summer Fest 5k. In a field of 310 runners, Seamus placed 6th in 17:53. On Saturday morning, Bob Cahill ran in the hilly and challenging Tullaroan half marathon, distinguishing himself with 3rd place in a field of 105 and a time of 1:30:44. As part of his first triathlon, in Athy, on the same day Roland Cottle ran the 5k element in 28:39 and finished in 267th place out of a field of 633. Roland’s strongest discipline for the time being was the swim where he covered 750m in 13:08 for 44th place. Later on Saturday, Luke Davis took part in the Luxembourg Night Half Marathon. The race started at the same time as the marathon at 7pm and Luke was home 1:36:03 later in 224th place. On Sunday morning, we had competitors in each of the races on offer as part of the Cork marathon festival and we had some excellent results despite the windy conditions. In a field of 1,052, and where the race was won by Gary O’Hanlon in 2:21:40 and a returning Angela McCann (39th overall in 3:02:46), Kieran Little, coming back from injury, placed 5th in the marathon in a super time of 2:32:10 and he was followed by our other participant, Adam Flanagan, anxious to improve on his time in Rotterdam where he had faced difficulty in the warm temperatures, who placed 11th in another excellent time of 2:46:06. At times, both runners could be seen running with our intrepid relay team, made up of Alan Sheehy, Michael Kiely, Shane Collins, guest runner Cian Murphy and anchor man Ciaran Diviney. The 5-man team managed to take 3rd place in the 623-team relay competition, beating 95 other all-male teams, in an impressive time of 2:30:37, just behind local clubs Leevale (2:24:24) and Togher (2:29:12) and less than 2 minutes ahead of Kieran. We had 4 participants in the half marathon, with its field of 2,566 runners. The race was won by Gavin Sweeney (1:09:04) ahead of Cillian O’Leary (1:09:29) and Freddy Sittuk (1:11:03). Just coming back from injury, Rob Browne ran within himself to place 72nd in 1:28:43 and he was followed by a super run from Irene Gorman, despite perhaps too fast a start by her own admission. Irene ran 1:31:15 for 10th place in the women’s race (104th overall). Not too far behind came Andy O’Sullivan (130th in 1:32:42) and later he was followed by Billy Kelly (453rd in 1:43:37). The other major event of the day was, of course the 37th running of the Women’s Mini Marathon in Dublin, with its field of more than 25,000 participants. On a blustery and warm, but mercifully dry, day we had more than a dozen Crusaders towards the front of the huge field. The race was extremely challenging in the first half as runners headed straight into the wind on the N11 on their way to the turn at UCD. The race was won by Kilkenny athlete Aoibhe Richardson, who trains in Oregon in the USA, in a time of 34:35, from MSB's Catherina Mullen (35:01) and Olympic marathoner Breege Connolly (35:13). Our participants included Rachael Yorke (who led the contingent home and who ran a PB of 43:11 for 68th place) followed by Ciara Lynch, (104th in 45:14) Kathryn Sweeney (113th in 45:33), Dee Ni Chearbhaill (127th in 46:15), Jemma Lyons (157th in 47:13), Emily Feighan (186th in 47:34), Maria Kennedy (206th in 48:11), Olivia McEvoy (213th in 48:13), Louise Yorke (237th in 48:50), Maria del Carmen Jimenez Campos (250th in 48:52), Liz Nixon (354th in 51:07), Amy McGuinness (in a similar time, but result missing), Joanne Carey (475th in 52:18), Aoife Cowhie (662nd in 53:31) and Sarah Lyons (5,727th in 1:13:55). Possibly because of the bank holiday weekend we had a significant turnout of participants in Saturday’s parkruns. Stephen Hurley was again a first finisher in Poolbeg in 17:57 as was Kate Murray in Shanganagh (32nd overall in 22:57). Dee Lawlor also performed the same feat in Cabinteely, in a time of 17:59, as did Lisa Shine in Tyrrelstown (7th overall in 21:51). As usual, Poolbeg witnessed the largest participation by the club. Stephen was followed by Kenan Furlong (4th in 18:25), Russell Murphy (27th in 22:14), Fiona Bane (63rd and 10th in 24:27), Ava Rose Clarke (76th and 15th in 25:29), Mari Hansen (96th and 23rd in 27:24), Maureen McGinley (110th and 28th in 28:46) and Ciara McElligott (121st and 32nd in 31:56). Brian Carroll ran in Father Collins where he placed 21st in 21:37, whilst in River valley, Brian Scanlan took 12th spot in 20:44. Andrej Kujikis marked his return by placing 8th in Bushy Park in a time of 20:24, whilst Zlatko Kulic came home in 6th spot in 20:27 in Fairview. Mairin Shine joined Lisa in Tyrrelstown where she placed 27th (and 11th) in 40:57, whilst Liam Lyster crossed the line in 18th place in Strokestown in a time of 27:36. Paul and Aoife Kelly ran in Darndale, where Paul placed 14th in 23:30 and Aoifeclose behind, 15th and 4th in 23:31. Another pair took on Tolka Valley. Diarmuid Byrne placed 48th in 28:29 followed closely by Maria Pertl, 49th and 14th in 28:34. Ronan Moynihan took to the paths of Malahide on Saturday where he crossed the line in 9th place in a time of 18:15, with Darina Scully tailwalking in the same event. Colm Foley ran in Griffeen where he finished in 25th place in 22:59, whilst Mairead Cashman ran in Cabinteely with Dee, placing 107th and 28th in 29:48. Finally, Anthony O’Reilly led our small contingent home in Marlay Park, where he placed 23rd in 19:39. Anthony was followed by Gillian Lyons (190th and 23rd in 24:45), Francis Furey (270th in 26:38) and Aisling O’Connor (381st and 100th in 29:53).
