The major event of the weekend was the Track and Field Championships, held in the Morton Stadium in Santry over two days. We ended up with four medals, a nice balance of two on the track and two in the field. The first was won by Matt Behan who agonisingly took silver in what turned out to be a two horse race in a straight final of the 110mH on Sunday. Matt looked to have edged it until the final stride and came home in 14.38, 12/100 of a second behind first place. Another of our hurdlers, Jason Harvey, took silver in the 400mH, again in what turned out to be a race between two runners. Falling over the line at the end, he ran in a time of 51.78 only 5/100 of a second behind the winner. Jason had qualified the day before in 1st place in his heat in 54.70. In the field it was great to see Adam McMullen come back from a recent serious career-threatening Achilles injury to take a medal in the long jump. Of note is the fact that Adam was in 5th place going into his last jump, but he managed to pull out a leap of 7.37m to finish with the silver medal. Finally, Colin Quirke, took gold in the men’s discus with a throw in the second round of 60.4m, some 5m ahead of the competitor in 2nd place. We had at least two 4th place finishers. Andrew Mellon had the misfortune of an unfavourable lane draw (8th lane) in the final of the 400m. Despite having the 2nd fastest qualifying time in the heats the day before (47.45), Andrew placed 2nd in his heat and qualified as a fastest loser. He was unlucky at the line in the final when the bronze medal went to a runner immediately on his inside (given the same time as Andrew of 47.47) who threw himself over the line alongside him. Then, in the hammer, Killian Barry finished just outside the medals in 4th place with his last throw of 52.8m. Other athletes to have entertained us over the days were as follows: Rhianna McCarthy went out in the first round of the 100m in Heat 2 with a 7th place finish in 12.67, whilst Jason Harvey also failed to progress in the 400m. In heat 2 he placed 4th in a time of 49.53, whilst Nick Ennis ran in heat 4, placing 3rd in 51.10 and possibly picking up an injury in the process. Michael O’Conor unfortunately got knocked out of the men’s 1500 and didn’t finish following a 3-man pile up that left Shane Healy needing medical treatment. Other athletes not making it out of their heats were Katie Rogers and Mary Horgan in respectively heats 1 and 2 in the 800m. Mary is just coming back from illness and ran 2:15.90, well below her usual times to place 7th, whilst it would have been challenging for Katie to have made it into the final on the strength of her PB. Nevertheless, she ran consistently for 8th place in 2:20.75 on a track where there was quite a bit of a headwind on the back straight. In the men’s 800m, despite running a super race for 3rd place behind Kevin Woods, Fearghal O’Hare would have had to have run a PB to qualify as a fastest loser. Fearghal’s time was 1:55.38. Michael Kiely ran in the 1st heat of the 5,000m, placing 13th in 15:45.34. Again, he would likely have needed a PB to progress as a fastest loser. Those that did progress in their disciplines, but finished out of the medals, were Niamh Allen in the 1500m and Kevin Woods in 800m. Both had to contend with immensely strong fields in their respective finals. Kevin placed 2nd in his heat in 1:54.72 and then placed 8th in the final in 1:53.24, whilst Niamh ran her heat for 3rd place in 4:37.02. In the final, which was as tactical as can be imagined and went from two 80 seconds laps to a furious finish, Niamh took 7th place out of 11 runners in 4:37.72. Finally, Oisin Taylor placed 7th in the triple jump with a leap of 13.22m in the 2nd round. It should be noted that a lot of runners ended up on the ground at the line as well as during some of the races. Apart from the inevitable bumping and barging that large fields produce (and produced the notable disqualification of a medal winner in the men's 1500m), it seems to be the in-thing nowadays to leap for the line, even knowing you’re likely to hit the ground, in place of a dip of the chest. It was reported that Conor McCullough, a Crusader living in the US, won the hammer in the US National Championships on 26 July in Des Moines, Iowa. He threw 78.14m which increased his PB and the Crusaders club record set in 2014 by nearly a metre (from 77.2m). The achievement moves his current ranking up to 8th in the World. Earlier in the week, we had athletes participate in the 7th round of the Dublin Athletics grade meets. This time, it was held in the Morton Stadium in Santry. Hugo Magee placed 2nd in a time of 24.38 in the men 200m grade B2, whilst in the mixed mile Fiona Shine was the only woman participating and she ran 5:46.48. We then had a series of 1500m races. 6 Crusaders contested the Grade C1 women’s race and it was won by Rachael Yorke in 5:18.33, followed by Sarah Lyons in 2nd in 5:30.60 with Rebecca Fleming a close 3rd in 5:31.57. Next across the line came Emer Kenny 99th in 5:54.44), followed by Maeve Muldowney, who valiantly seems to be trying a lot of different types of racing at the moment. Maeve ran 6:01.8 for 12th place, to be followed home by Anna Shine in 14th place (6:51.54). John Healy took 6th place in the C1 race in 4:48.77 and then in the D1 race, Brendan Glynn ran 5:21.75 for 5th place, followed by Paul E. Kelly (10th in 6:41.77). Members will be interested to read that Lorraine Healy, who trains with us, placed 3rd in the 1500m B1 race in a time of 5:11.79. There were a few road and trail races on which to report. On Thursday at Carton House, in a trail race organised by Dunboyne AC, we had 3 runners competing. In a field exceeding 480, Katie McElroy placed 60th overall (8th female finisher)in 26;16 and Katie was followed home by Kate Murray (107th and 21st in 28:11) and by Mairead Cashman (313th and 129th in 36:55). Then, on Saturday, again 3 athletes from the club took part in a race. This was the Mullingar 10 miler with its field of 328. On an undulating course, Ciaran Kelly led our contingent across the line in 36th place in 62:08 and he was followed by Bob Cahill (55th in 66:24) and by Andrea Talpo (61st in 67:00). Ilona McElroy was our sole competitor in the Duleek 10k on Sunday morning. On a hilly course and amongst a field of 533, Ilona, in her first race since recovering from a long-time torn Achilles injury, approached it very much as a training challenge. So it is surprising that she wasn’t too far off breaking 40 minutes, coming home in 26th place overall, 5th female finisher, in 40:26. There were two races in the mountains last week. The Leinster League event took place as usual on Wednesday evening. This time the race was held on Brockagh mountain in Co. Wicklow (a route taking runners to the summit from Laragh and back) on moderate terrain with a climb of 443m over 11km. We had 5 runners in the event, led home as usual by Warren Swords. Warren won his age category, placing 4th in 51:09 and he was followed across the line by Donatas Jocius (19th in 57:39). In a field of 162, Anthony O’Reilly was next in 62:39), followed by Ollie McGrath (74th in 66:42) and Berndt Heim (151st in 87:54). The on Sunday, Warren turned out again, this time for the Irish and Leinster Mountain championships. Warren may not yet have enough races to count (after 4 of the 5 taking place and a minimum of 3 is needed), but he placed 12th in 61:49 on the entirely uphill course on Log Na Coile in the Wicklow Mountains (a 718m climb over 10.46km on moderately difficult terrain). The field measured a reasonably modest 71. As of this moment, Becky Quinn, who did not compete on Saturday, appears to be in pole position (and with a possibly unassailable lead) in the national championships with one race to go. As usual, Leo Lundy was out again at the weekend tackling an ultra. This time he participated in the rainy 12 hours overnight event known as the Manvers Dusk ’til Dawn ultra which took place on the Trans-Pennine Way near Rotherham in South Yorkshire. Apparently the deluge was of biblical proportions at times! There was a solid participation in the parkruns at the weekend, with just one first finisher to show for it. Fiona Shine and her family ran in Russborough where she placed 5th overall in 21:48, followed home by Lisa (7th overall and 2nd female) in 22:47, Anna (24th and 9th in 26:28) and Mairin (64th and 26th in 48:33). They were joined by Orlaith de Burca who ran 28:39 for 38th and 16th. Michael Wycherley placed 2nd in 17:20 in St. Anne’s, whilst Zlatko Kulic placed 3rd in 20:22 in Brickfields and Brian Scanlan took 5th place in Malahide in 18:36 (followed home by Darina Scully (342nd and 134th in 56:14)). There was a good showing as usual in Poolbeg. Antonios Gkogkakis was first club-mate across the line (25th in 21:32), followed by Fiona Bane in a satisfying 22:29 for 36th and 3rd places. Josie Ward was next (41st and 4th in 22:52) and Josie was followed by Aitor Arribas Velascos (44th in 23:05), Aine Kenny (55th and 10th in 24:06), Sharon Woods (58th and 11th in 24;16), Ali May Hann (75th and 20th in 25:38), Ava Rose Clarke (77th and 21st in 25:50), Berndt Heim (90th in 26;40), Maureen McGinley (126th and 40th in 29:31), Karla Woods (133rd and 45th in 30;29) and Don Anderton, tailwalking. Andrej Kujikis ran in Bushy Park, where he placed 6th in 19:17, whilst Mari Hansen ran in Clover Point in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, where, in a field of 56, she placed 25th and 9th in 25:17. Also, in Canada, Sarah Lyons and Phelim Murray ran in Nose Hill in Calgary, Alberta, where in a field of 88, Sarah placed 15th and 7th in 24:06 and Phelim came home in 28th in 26:18. Paul F. Kelly was our only participant in Fairview, where he ran 29:47 for 64th place, whilst Kris Ryan ran in Paradise Point, Queensland, Australia, where, in a field of 240, she ran 22:21 for 45th and 8th. Aidan Hudner continues to run in Glasgow where in a field of 370 he placed 55th in a time of 21:32, whilst Colm Foley took 31st place in 23:37 in Griffeen Park in Lucan. Luke Davis placed 9th in 18:48, whilst Jonathan Sykes took 59th spot in 21:44 in Marlay Park. The in Ormeau Park in Belfast, Kate Murray ran 23:36 to place 82nd and 11th. Liam Lyster ran in Strokestown where he picked up 10th place in 27:26, whilst Maria Pertl placed 34th and 14th in 31:51 in Tolka Valley. Finally, Mike Stewart and Janet McManus ran in Shanganagh, where Mike placed 28th in 22:49 and Janet picked up 64th place overall (and 11th female) in 25:39. Both men’s and women’s track and field teams gave it their all on Saturday in the National Track and Field League final contested in Tullamore, but despite such great effort, the women’s team will remain in Division 1 for another year (but hopefully third time lucky next year), taking 5th place (with only the first two teams promoted), whilst a podium place in the Premier Division also eluded the men, by a similar margin, with the same finish of a 5th position. 12 women and 13 men participated for the club in the final in Tullamore. Funnily, AAI sent out only one Instagram message on the day which was to record a victory that never took place for Matt Behan in the 110mH, when in fact Matt didn’t compete yesterday having picked up an injury recently. Strange! Anyway, we did record some wins for the men on the day in the 100m and 200m (Andrew Mellon) and, unsurprisingly, for Adam McMullen in the long jump. Both athletes will be feeling good about next week’s national championships (even though Andrew was not running his usual 400m distance yesterday). Another good result came in the 400mH with Jason Harvey taking 2nd place to record 7 points. The same number of points came in the hammer (James Griffin) and triple jump (Oisin Taylor), whilst we recorded 6 points in each of the discus (Sam Gaine) and high jump (John Nugent). 5 points were contributed by Nick Ennis (400m), Brian O’Kelly (5,000m) and the 4x400m team (Jason, Kevin Woods, Nick and Peter Murphy), whilst 4 points came from the 800m (Kevin). As team captain, Gary Park did his bit in the 3,000m walk, earning 3 valuable points and not being disqualified, along with Michael Kiely in the 1500m. Then, our remaining points came from the 4x100m (Jason, Nick, Andrew and Michael), shot put (Sam) and javelin (Jason). Whilst the women had no individual wins, they did have a couple of 2nd places: Mary Horgan in the 400m and Alix Hughes in the shot. Our multi-talented athlete, Alix, contributed a further 6 points in each of the 100mH and discus, along with Mary in her standard discipline of 800m and women’s captain Lisa Shine in the 1,500m walk. 5 points came from the 400mH (Katie Rose Barry), 1,500m (Katie Rogers), 3,000m (Catherine Thornton), 200m (Rhianna McCarthy), 3,000m steeple-chase (Fiona Shine, amazingly in her first attempt at the discipline) and 4x400m relay (Alix, Mary, Katie Rose and Katie). 4 points were contributed by the 4x100m relay team (Alix, Rhianna, Katie Rose and Lara Murray) along with the javelin (Alice Bolger Aboud). Alice also helped with the javelin, as did Arianna Francis in the high jump and long jump, along with Nadine Deehan in the 100m. There were three road races this week on which to report. On Thursday evening the Liberties run took place. It’s described as a 4 mile race, but this is slightly approximate and it might be slightly long. The race on Thursday evening was won by Sean Hehir in 19:41 and he was followed by at least 4 Crusaders: Tim O’Donnell, who placed 48th in 26:08, Katie McElroy (96th overall and 9th female finisher in 27:23), Gearoid Grogan (126th in 28:53), making a return to competitive running, and Miriam Logan (195th overall and 36th in 30:37), off no warm up having arrived just before the gun. On Saturday evening Dee Ni Chearbhaill took part in the United Striders 5 mile Stride in Co. Wexford. In humid conditions on a hilly course (notably in the second mile), Dee ran 35:34 and came home in 62nd place, 8th woman and 1st F40 in a field of 172. Then, on Sunday, at least 30 members took part in the first event of the KBC Dublin Marathon Race Series, the 10k, which last year was moved from its previous home in Swords to the largely flat environs of the Grange Castle Business Park in Clondalkin. It’s considered as a warm up race for those of us training for the Dublin Marathon in October. The route isn’t especially scenic, although it does take in Corkagh Park and the Royal Canal, but it is generally fast. On Sunday, there was a bit of a headwind on the first 2.5km of the 10k loop which was more welcoming in warm, humid conditions than a hindrance. The quality field was led home on the men’s side by Paul Pollock with a win over Mick Clohisey and on the women’s side by Breege Connolly over Laura Graham by similar margins of 15-20 seconds. There were only a couple of PBs evident for the club and that may have been due to the wind, which also affected 59-year old Tommy Hughes’ latest attempt at the O/55 world record (nevertheless, he did place 9th overall in 33:59). Our club mates were led home by Rob Cross (15th and first M45 in 35:06) who was followed by Karl Walsh (34th in 36:20) and James Moran (38th in 36:31). Another top 50 place, in a field of nearly 2,600, went to Joe Walsh (45th in 36:53), and he was followed by newcomer Eoin Fitzpatrick (51st in 37:02) and by Frank Hague (52nd in 37:09). Barry McGuire came home next, in 65th place (37:51) and he was followed by Graham Crowley (77th in 38:05). Another newcomer, Richard Phelan crossed the line next in 91st place (38:35). Richard was followed by 3 other runners to break 40 minutes, which included Adrienne Jordan (119th overall, 8th female finisher and 3rd F40 in 39:21), Alma Hanevy (136th and 10th in 39:35) who flew through the second half of the race picking up loads of runners, Maurice Kelter (140th in 39:29) and by Rory Goldsmith (156th in 39:58). Bob Cahill continues to improve (155th in 40:03) and he was followed by Rory and by Catherine Thornton (159th and 12th in 40:11) on the back of her 3,000m effort in the league on the previous day. Kevin Lambe had a super result in 174th place (a 2 minute PB improvement of 40:29) and he was followed by James Cottle (180th and 2nd M60 in 40:44) who continues his recovery from injury. Paul F. Kelly followed James home in 307th place, another to record a PB (42:38), and behind him came Robbie Moore (394th in 44:00), Gian Piero Allerta (420th in 44:36), Dave Tuohy (465th in 44:33), Barry O’Neill (504th in 45:39), Olwyn Dunne (552nd overall, 71st female, in 46:31), Sean Cormican (575th in 45:26), Ciara Lynch (614th and 83rd in 46:45), Aoife Kelly (666th and 98th in 47:25), Miriam Logan (768th and 119th in 48:38, not far off her PB and in her 3rd event in 4 days), Tim Hyland (969th in 50:29), Joe O'Reilly (1,529th in 54:21) and Graham Farrington-Christie (2,282nd in 66:38). Leo Lundy reported that he ran his 97th Ultra marathon (50k) at the weekend on the Mary Peters track in Belfast. How does he do it? There was one IMRA event during the week in which we fielded participants. This was the midweek run in Wicklow which was an out and back around Djouce. The race involved a climb of 580m on a 9.8km course over moderate terrain. We had 6 competitors in the event, led home by Warren Swords (9th overall and 3rd M40, in 57:42) who was followed by Brian McGuckin (37th in 66:14). Gavan Doherty was next in 49thplace in 68:09, followed by Ollie McGrath (61st in 71:10), Kate Murray (122nd overall, 16th female, in 85:28) and by Maeve Muldowney (157th and 34th in 101:39). Then on Saturday Warren competed in the open category in the 44th running of the 15.2km Snowdon International Race (from Llanberis at the bottom to the summit and back, a climb of some 970m). He came in 83rd out of 613 finishers in a super time of 1:25:04. Poolbeg Parkrun celebrated its 100th edition on Saturday and, fittingly, its field nearly doubled as a result, with 14 Crusaders amongs its ranks. Stephen Hurley was its first finisher in 18:02. We had another first finisher in Waterstown where Zlatko Kulic headed the field there once again, in 19:52. Otherwise, our participation was relatively low over the weekend. Katie McElroy placed 2nd (19th overall) in Bushy Park in a time of 21:21 and she was followed by Miriam Logan (in her 2nd event) in 102nd place overall (17th female) in 27:40 and by Mairead Cashman (202nd and 53rd in 35:16). In Fairview, Berndt Heim, for once not running in the mountains, placed 73rd in 27:15, followed by Paul and Aoife Kelly (respectively, 125th and 146th overall (44th female) in 30:09 and 31:47). Further afield, Cormac McGuire ran in San Francisco’s Chrissy Field where in a field of 147 he placed 23rd in 20:54. Then, closer to home, Sarah Lyons ran in Burgess park in the UK with 448 other runners, placing 135th and 13th in 23:09. Aidan Hudner changed locations in Glasgow and in Pollok Park he finished in a time of 22:52 for 49th place in a field of 417. Back to Poolbeg, where Stephen was joined by Luke Davis (10th in 19:14), David Timoney (22nd in 20:29), Luke Haran (34th in 21:37), Russell Murphy (51st in 22:46), Sharon Woods (75th and 12th in 24:15), Aoife Cowhie (102nd and 23rd in 25:11), Cathal Murphy (116th in 25;44), Maria Pertl (117th and 30th in 25:46), Diarmuid Byrne (118th in 25:47), Mari Hansen (136th and 41st in 27:01), Karla Woods (190th and 68th in 31:27) and tailwalkers Darina Scully and Fiona Bane. We start with the track, where, on Wednesday on a rainy evening in Santry we had several of our club mates take part in the 6th graded meet of the season in the Morton stadium. Rhianna McCarthy took 2nd place in the women’s A1 100m in a time of 13.14. In the men’s C2 event of the same distance Max Doyle took the win in 12.36. Lisa Shine placed 6th in 2:45.72 in the women’s 800m C1, whilst Kieron White placed 8th in the men’s equivalent A1 event in 2:01.19 and Brendan Glynn took 8th spot in the D1 race in 2:33.92. There were two 5k races: In the week he was due to marry, Italo Giancaterina placed 17th in the A1 race in 16:06.66, followed by Donnacha McCarthy (guided by men’s captain Michael Kiely) who placed 25th in 17:56.13. Then, in the mixed BC1 race, John McAuley crossed the line in 6th place in a time of 17:00.61, followed by Peter O’Toole (8th in 17:30.82) and Thomas Martini (13th in 2:09.14). On Saturday, we had a significant turnout in Drogheda for the last meet of the season of the Irish Milers Club. It was a glorious summer’s afternoon, with a bit of a breeze which did have its impact on some of the events, but we were presented with some excellent racing. The 8-lane track itself, surrounded by houses, is in good condition, but will not be used for championships because it doesn’t have a water jump for a steeplechase. The afternoon started with a series of novice miles. In the first, Paul E. Kelly took 3rd place in a PB time of 7:09.04, whilst Sarah Lyons had a magnificent run in the second event which she won after biding her time behind the race leader until the last 100 or so metres. Sarah looked totally comfortable throughout and probably recorded a PB in her 5:52.77. Lisa Shine came next in 4th place in 6:08.52, followed by a storming Amy McGuinness, who would have been extremely satisfied by her outing, in 6th place with a time of 6:11.42. Emer Kenny also took part and had a good run to place 11th in 6:24.80. The last of the 3 races involved Antonios Gkogkakis and Rebecca Fleming, with the former recording a PB time of 5:35.31 to place 14th, with Rebecca not too far behind in 18th place in a time of 5:54.07. We, then witnessed a series of 800m races. Fearghal O’Hare was only 4 tenths of a second off his PB in placing 8th in the men’s A race in a time of 1:53.77. Tomas Bradley ran 2:10.48, finishing in 8th place, also to have a good outing in the men’s D race. In the women’s event we saw a super run from Katie Rogers, who ran extremely intelligently to take 3rd place in a PB time of 2:18.75 (knocking 3 seconds off her previous best) in the women’s B 800m. In the women’s C event we had two runners, Fiona Shine and Serena Moloney. They were also up against Lorraine Healy from Moyne, Co. Tipperary, who trains with us. Lorraine had an excellent outing to take 3rd place in a season’s best 2:29.04, followed by Fiona who placed 5th in 2:31.45 and Serena (7th in 2:35.10). There was also some excellent competition in the 1500m races. Niamh Allen was only half a second off her PB in placing 2nd well ahead of the field and closing fast on the winner, the incredible Fiona Kehoe, in 4:26.70 in the women’s race. Then, in the men’s 1500m Michael Kiely made a significant move in the middle of the race to come home in 5th place in 4:10.45 ahead of Michael O’Conor (11th in 4:14.51). In the mixed 3,000m, Joe McDermott had a good battle with class athlete Catherina Mullan from MSB to place 7th in 9:50.98. On Sunday we had three runners take part in the Day of Irish PBs on the Le Cheile track in Leixlip. Fin Lawler ran the 5k in 21:04.94, whilst Paul E. Kelly ran a PB time of 25:51.28 in warm conditions over the same distance, his 2nd PB of the weekend. Geraldine Clements took on the mile where she ran 6:58.97. Finally, our Spanish exile, Pablo Sanchez, reported that he placed third in the regional 5k finals in Madrid in a time of 15:56. The highlight of the weekend in road racing terms was the Irish Runner 10 mile race, a relatively new event which involved a new national championship. The race was conducted on a hilly and twisting course in the Phoenix Park, also taking in the Conyngham Road. Indeed, it occupied most of the southern and western parts of the park. The runners benefited from quite calm conditions. In a race which saw, yet again, a new age category World record established by 59-year old Tommy Hughes who placed 17th in a field of 1,232 finishers in a time of 54:46, our first runner home was Adam Flanagan, in training for the Dublin marathon (as were several of the other Cru participants). Adam placed 32nd in 57:35. We had two other athletes break the hour: Rob Cross came home in 35th place (4th M45) in 58:12, followed by Vinnie McGuinness (45th in 59:07). Next came Ciaran Diviney (56th and 5th M45, in 1:00:18), followed by Ciarain Kelly (72nd in 1:02:00) and Frank Hague (76th in 1:02:15) as top 100 finishers. Thomas Martini was next (137th in 1:07:25), followed by Maura Mahoney (264th and 37th female, in 1:14:33), Mari Hansen (656th and 173rd in 1:30:22), Sharon Woods (824th and 246th in 1:36:13), Mary Dolan (896th and 287th in 1:39:12) and Lorraine Fitzsimons (1,125th and 437th in 1:57:28). Members will be interested to hear that Lydia Bigley, a Front Runner who latterly trained with us, returned from Berlin to take part in the race and who placed 496th and 109th in 1:24:09. Also, of interest to members perhaps is that the women’s race was won by the 2019 Docklands 5k winner, Niamh Clifford who placed 53rd overall in a time of 59:58. Earlier in the week, the BHAA organised a 5k race which took place over a mix of track and park (Irishtown Stadium and Ringsend Park). The runners experienced the same wet conditions enjoyed by the track runners up in Santry on the same evening. It was a good and substantial Cru turnout, all the same, with 10 runners out of the field of 133. Our first runner home was Michael Wycherley (6th and 1st M45 in 17:25), followed by Joe Walsh (10th and 1st M40 in 17:49). Sean Murphy, who trains with us, took 11th place and 2nd M40 in 17:54 just behind Joe, and he was followed by Karl Walsh (13th and 3rd M40 in 18:05). Eoghan Kerins made a welcome return to competitive running, placing 17th in 19:09, and he was followed by David Timoney (19th and 3rd M45 in 19:18), Patrick Needham (25th in 19:36), Tim O’Donnell (28th in 20:12), Ronan Moynihan (34th in 20:50), Robbie Moore (46th in 21:22) and Paul E. Kelly (114th in 26:46). Leo Lundy reported that he ran his 96th ultra marathon on Saturday in the "Chamber of Runs Ultra" in Berkshire in England in warm and humid conditions. This was followed by a half marathon on Sunday on Lundy Island(!) off the North Devon Coast. There was one IMRA race last week in the Dublin Mountains. This was the 11.23km run over Tibradden on a difficult course with a 365m climb. In a field of 152 (and again held in wet conditions), Warren Swords placed 5th (and 1st M40) in 47:15. Warren was followed by Brian McGuckin (38th and 4th M50) in 55:17, Anthony O’Reilly (43rd in 56:13) and Gavan Doherty (55th in 58:13). We had quite a few podium places in the parkruns on Saturday. Zlatko Kulic was first finisher in Waterstown in 19:59, as was Kieran Little in Clarisford (17:21). Then, in St. Anne’s, Peter O’Toole came 2nd in 17:32, as did Kate Murray (27th overall) in Lough Key in 24:03 and Kenan Furlong in Poolbeg (18:58). Maria Pertl took 3rd place (14th overall) in Tolka Valley in 24:50 (followed by partner Diarmuid Byrne (15th in the same time)), as did Fiona Bane (31st overall) in Poolbeg in 22:45. There, Kenan and Fiona were joined by Tim Francony (9th in 19:36), David Timoney (13th in 19:52), Ava Rose Clarke (65th and 11th in 25:15), Gillian Curran (66th and 12th in 25:16), Ali May Hann (71st and 13th in 25:37) and Maureen McGinley (111th and 33rd in 28:46). Aoife and Paul F. Kelly ran in Brickfields where they placed respectively 39th (and 9th) and 40th in 29:50 and 29:51. Luke Haran placed 10th in 20:42 in Mungret, whilst Mairead Cashman came home in 48th and 15th in 29:49. In Queensland, Australia Kris Ryan placed 40th and 9th in Main Beach in a field of 319. In Glasgow, Aidan Hudner placed 44th in 21:31 in a field of 374. Orlaith de Burca ran in Shanganagh, placing 104th and 22nd in 27:52. Finally, women’s captain Lisa Shine as tailwalker, followed her mother Mairin home in Donabate, where Mairin ran 39:33 (143rd and 62nd). We start, however, with the track, where, in Tullamore on Saturday, we had several U23 and U20 athletes take part in the national championships. In the U23 women’s 100m Ciara Barry placed 4th in her heat in 12.82 and went on to place 7th in the final in 12.94. Similarly, in his heat in the men’s U23 100m, David Heavey placed 4th in 11.42, followed by a 7th place finish in the final in 11.29. In heat 1 of the junior men’s 200m, Peter Murphy took 5th place in in 24.00. In the U23 200m men’s race, David came home in 2nd place in 23.46 but did not start in the final, whilst Shane Keane ran 22.55 and 22.29 to place respectively 4th and 6th between heat and final. Shane also took silver in the long jump with a leap of 6.36. Finally, the men’s 4X100m U23 team won gold in 44.31, whilst the men’s 4x400m squad gained silver in 3:36.31. It was reported that the timetable was running up to 25 minutes ahead of schedule because of running U20 and U23 runners in the same races and some of the runners either didn’t make their races or arrived late at the call room and were yellow carded as they were unaware that the times had changed. If this was the case, it seems a little unfortunate, to say the least. So, onto road racing. With little wind, but with half the race being run on sludgy sand and with a bit of drizzle to add to the challenge of beach running, Kieran Little put in a distinguished effort to win the Clontarf half marathon on Saturday morning. Kieran’s time was 1:14:57. He was followed, in a field of well over 1500 runners, by Dee Lawlor who took 6th spot in 1:20:40 and then by Bob Cahill with yet another half marathon under his belt this year with similar times (34th in 1:29:40). Triona Quill also had an excellent race, where she ran 1:40:50 to place 226th overall, 14th female finisher and winner of her age category. Triona was followed by Christophe Marsan (254th in 1:42.170 and by Joe Dunne who was pacing the 2-hour runners (977th in 1:59:22), meticulously as always! There were at least 17 Crusaders representing the club on Saturday morning on Achill Island, and we did not disappoint, with several standout performances. Conditions for the two hilly races, the half marathon and 10k , started out misty and a little drizzly, but the temperature was soon rising by the 10:30 start for the half (with the 10k starting 45 minutes later, and both races meeting each other at about 5k for the 10k and 16k for the half, so that we all finished together). In fact the races were conducted in quite warm and breezy conditions, particularly for the first 6k of the half marathon which involved a long steady uphill drag with a headwind which was to some extent refreshing for the runners. The women’s half marathon race was won by Catherine Thornton who led from gun to tape and which will have gained her some confidence as she embarks on marathon training. Catherine placed 38th overall in a field of more than 600 runners (and in a time of 1:32:36) and she was headed by two Crusaders who are also native members of the Achill community: Patrick Needham (30th in 1:30:36) and Darran Lovely (33rd in 1:31:10), with Patrick being the first islander across the line and winning a prize for that. Next across the line, on what is an undulating course with its challenging early kilometres and hills at 16 and 19km, was Kevin Lambe (46th in 1:35:26), John Lohan (85th in 1:40:25 and 8th M50), Maria del Carmen Jimenez Campos (163rd overall, 20th woman, in 1:47:54), Liz Nixon (214th and 32nd in 1:51:39), Tara Murphy (232nd, 32nd and 6th F50, in 1:52:58) and Paul Larkins, our Kilkenny exile, who placed 372nd in 2:05:01. We were equally successful in the 10k, won by ex-Crusader Ray Hynes and by a guest runner with the Cru, Clare Sullivan of Rathfarnham WSAF. Joe McDermott continued his super running by placing 3rd in 36:43, followed by an excellent performance from Eddie Nugent (7th in 40:08 and winner of his age category). In an overall field of 475, Adrienne Jordan ran well too, placing 2nd in the women’s race in 40:59 (9th overall), followed by Caroline Crowley, on her way back from injury, who took 3rd place (13th overall) in 43:14. Caroline was followed by James Cottle, also working his way back from injury, who placed 14th and winner of his age category in 43:41. At one stage, around the 6km mark, James thought he would be able to catch Caroline as he had kept her in sight for all of the race to that point, as Caroline stopped to tie a shoelace. However, it was not to be as she sped off at an even faster pace, restoring the natural order. At least James (along with other members of the group) had the satisfaction of having reeled in a good number of runners who had underestimated the hilly challenges of the race and had started too fast. Behind James came Grainne Regan who ensured that 3 of the first 4 places in the women’s race were held by the club (21st and 4th in 45:20), followed by Jemma Lyons who reinforced the women’s dominance with 7th place (26th overall) in 46:09. Miriam Logan also ran well to place 56th overall (17th woman home in 50:40). So that we had all five of our female runners among the top 20 in the race. As usual, the trip to Achill involved more than just racing and a good time was had by all, with even a bit of challenging (read vertical) hill walking (and peering over precipitous cliff faces (the highest cliffs in Europe)) thrown in for good measure with expert guiding by Darran the day after the race. On the same day, Aine Kenny and Kate Murray were not too far away in Roscommon, where they took part in a Kia Race Series event, the Roscommon Harriers 10 mile road race. The event was won by Mick Clohisey and Michelle Finn, whilst Aine placed 81st overall among the 557 runners (12th woman) in 1:10:02 and Kate took 153rd spot overall (36th woman) in 1:16:55. Conditions were similar to Achill, where they were warm and humid. There was not so much to report on the mountains this past week. One IMRA race midweek drew the participation of two of our athletes. Brian McGuckin, with a sore ankle from the week before, joined Gavan Doherty to run on Trooperstown Hill in Co. Wicklow on a course that was run on moderate terrain over 9km with a climb of 430m. In a field of 169 runners, Brian placed 33rd in 51:19, whilst Gavan took 52nd spot in 53:26. There weren’t so many parkruns in which we featured at the weekend. We did, however, record a couple of first place finishes. Rob Browne took first place in Shanganagh in 18:05 (followed by Orlaith de Burca (97th overall and 26th woman, in 28:39)), whilst, in Poolbeg, Stephen Hurley finished likewise ahead of the field in a time of 16:58. There were podium places for Peter O’Toole in St. Anne’s (3rd in 17:360 and for Fiona Bane in Poolbeg (44th overall, in 23:25). Elsewhere, Lisa Shine was 5th (and 22nd) in Tramore in 23:03, followed by Mairin Shine (137th and 62nd in 44:40) and Mia Shine, Mairin’s grand-daughter and Lisa’s niece (143rd overall, 65th female finisher, in 53:13). Mairead Cashman ran in Bushy park where she placed 196th overall (57th woman) in 30:34, whilst, in Kingsbury Water in the UK, Olwyn Dunne joined 755 other runners and placed 227th overall, 36th woman, in 25:39. Even further afield, Cormac McGuire ran in Crissy Field in San Francisco where he placed 19th in a field of 125 in a time of 20:32. Ronan Moynihan placed 8th in Malahide in a time of 18:04, whilst we had three runners in Griffeen Park. Colm Foley crossed the line in 36th place 9in 22:570 ahead of Aoife Kelly (81st and 19th in 27:48) and Paul F. Kelly (82nd in 27:49). Peter was joined in St. Anne’s by Diarmuid Byrne (probably with a buggy) who placed 316th in 36:58 and by Darina Scully, tailwalking. Lastly, there was a large contingent alongside Stephen and Fiona in Poolbeg. Newcomer Richard Phelan placed 5th in 18:57, followed by Zlatko Kulic (12th in 20:00), David Timoney (20th in 20:36), Mark Swan (26th in 21:29), Barry O’Neill (34th in 22:05), Ava Rose Clarke (67th and 8th in 25:17), Gillian Curran (71st and 10th in 25:33), Cathal Murphy (75th in 25;43), Sharon Woods (80th and 13th in 26:03), Cliodhna O’Reilly (86th and 15th in 26:37) and Maureen McGinley (111th and 25th in 29:41. Don Anderton and Ciara McElligott were tailwalkers for the event. Clontarf Half Marathon (1543) Overall place Name Cat.
