There is a good chance that we walked away on Saturday with a good bit of brass from the Frank Duffy 10 mile race, incorporating the Dublin 10-mile Championships, with both our men’s and women’s senior and men’s O/35 teams well in the mix for medals. We also picked up several individual medals in the race that was held on its traditional hilly 2 loop (one major, one minor) course taking in most of the roads in the park in what for Ireland was the warmest of conditions. There was a nice refreshing breeze in places, notably running along the southern wall of the park taking in the Military Road and the Wellesley Monument in the 2nd mile and then again in the 7th mile coming down Chesterfield Ave, but overall it was a toughish day in the office. Still, there was a super atmosphere with nearly 4000 competitors and as usual Crusaders supporters were brilliantly vocal and well placed to help us along when we needed it. It was a super turnout from the club with nearly 50 runners finishing the race, well-noted by the race organisers who thanked us for our participation. The race was won by Yared Derese in 49:05 and he more or less led from the gun, with Mick Clohisey finishing about 30 seconds back, at least with the satisfaction of having beaten last year’s winner, Welshman Josh Griffiths, into 3rd place. Breege Connolly won the women’s race, her second of this year’s Dublin Race Series. First across the line for the club was Brendan Murphy, in preparation, like many of us in the race, for the Dublin marathon, his first. Brendan took 14th place and silver O/35 medal in a super time of 55:40. He was followed by the ever-dependable Italo Giancaterina (17th in 56:10) who seems to win a medal every time he competes! Along with Ciaran Diviney (33rd and 3rd M45 overall, but 2nd in the age category in Dublin, in 58:26) and Rob Cross alongside in the same time (34th and 4th M45 overall, but, like Ciaran, a medallist (bronze) in the age category in Dublin), our first 4 runners brought home the senior team bronze medal (3 of them being masters). Our next 3 runners, Warren Swords (39th in a PB time of 59:17), Joe McDermott (52nd in 60:09) and Seamus Moore (64th in a PB time of 61:34 and likely 4th M40 in Dublin), all of whom are masters, picked up the O/35 team silver medal. Next over the line came Paul Dempsey (70th in 62:00), followed by Dee Lawlor (73rd in 62:05), Rob Browne (83rd in a PB time of 62:31) and Joe Walsh (90th in 62:47) to complete a total of 11 runners in the top 100 male finishers. Graham Crowley also had a super race, his first 10-miler, placing 117th in 64:02 and following a steady pace strategy, and he was followed by Karl Walsh (150th in 66:04). The first of our female runners was next. Kiera Roche ran extremely well, taking up the pace in the second half of the race and storming through the field to place 186th overall, 10th woman finisher and 2nd senior in the Dublin Championships. Behind Kiera came James Cottle who enjoyed an epic battle with Brendan Ryan of Tallaght over the first seven miles, the lead for the M60 age category changing hands several times. James eventually had to settle for 2nd place overall in the age category (and 2nd in Dublin), coming home in 199th place in 68:08. Just behind James came Paul McNamara, like Graham another debutant at the distance and also, like Graham and others, training for the marathon. Paul placed 201st in 68:10. Catherine Thornton was our next female runner across the line in 212th place overall, nursing a couple of niggles but still managing to place 12th in the women’s race and pick up senior individual bronze in the Dublin Championships. With Grainne Regan (524th overall and 52nd female finisher in 74:35) and Alma Hanevy (538th overall and 55th woman in 75:37), our first 4 women finishers picked up the senior team silver in Dublin. There were PBs for Cormac McGuire (394th in 72:47) and Paul F. Kelly (515th in 74:46), whose wife, Aoife, was everywhere on the course, and Alessandro Nappi (704th in 77:35, his first 10 miler). Other notable places in the Dublin Championships were earned by Kate Murray (823rd overall, 118th woman and likely 4th F45, in 79:46), Olwyn Dunne (909th and 173rd and likewise likely 4th F50, in 80:47) and Triona Quill (1,041st overall and 173rd and likely 5th F50 in 82:33), who unfortunately suffered from an upset stomach for most of the race. Top 250 places in the women’s race went also to Dee Ni Chearbhaill (645th and 72nd in 77:05), Ciara Lynch (807th and 114th in 78:53), Jemma Lyons (827th and 120th in 79:08), Maria del Carmen Jimenez Campos (867th and 129th in 78:27), Isabelle Cairns (895th and 132nd in 80:23), Susie Keeling (1159th and 207th in 82:29), Joanne Carey (1168th and 212th in 83:47) and Miriam Logan (1260th and 235th in 84:57) who made the race part of her long run in her marathon training. On Sunday, Maurice Kelter, another marathoner in training, returned to his native Kerry where he took part in the Rose of Tralee 10k. In a field of 479, Maurice placed 11th in a PB time of 38:25 on the back of little sleep. Also on Sunday we had several participants in the various races on offer in Longford, principally the marathon, the half marathon and the marathon relay. In warm and humid conditions as experienced all around the country, we had at least 2 runners in the marathon. Kenan Furlong placed 41st in 3:16:36, whilst Gian Piero Allerta took 74th place in 3;38:31. The field totalled 218 runners. Then, in the half marathon we had at least 5 runners in a field of 489 finishers. Ger Forde led our contingent home in 6th place in a PB time of 1:15:09 and he was also 3rd in his age category, whilst John Mulvihill followed closely behind in 7th place also with a PB in 1:15:52 (an improvement from his recent PB at the Rock and Roll half). Bob Cahill was next, in 36th place with a time of 1:29:45 and he was followed by the husband and wife team of John Lohan and Tara Murphy, with John taking 71st spot in 1:34:50 and Tara, 190th overall (38th female and 3rd F50) in 1:49:34. We also had runners in the relay. The first of the teams finished 3rd overall in 3:20:07 and included John Thuillier. Next, Lisa Shine's team finished 5th overall in 3:22:08. Patrick Saunders' and Paul Kelly’s team finished 6th in 3:27:05. Orlaith de Burca and Mari Hansen ran on the team that finished 7th in 3:31:04. Finally, Fiona, Anna and Mairin Shine's team finished 13th in 3:50:12. Members will be interested to hear that Sean Murphy, the United Strider athlete who trains with us, and who is in marathon training, came home in 3rd place in a field of 176 in the Oylegate Half Marathon in Theoil Co. Wexford on Sunday. Sean's time was a decent 1:22:00. he was joined by his wife, Dee Ni Chearbhaill, who used the race as a training long run following Saturday's 10-miler. In hot and humid conditions and despite taking it handy, Dee came home in 99th place overall (17th female finisher and 5th in her age cat) in a time of 1:53:39. Also, Dublin Front Runners' Lydia Bigley who trains with us and is currently working in Berlin, ran in the Berlin half marathon on Sunday, recording a PB time of 1:45:55 and 9th in her age category in conditions that were even warmer than Ireland's (around 27 degrees). Brian O’Kelly continued his winning ways on Saturday morning, albeit in a more leisurely way than usual, when he was first finisher in the Fairview parkrun in 18:47. Stephen Hurley also finished first in Poolbeg in 17:46 and he was followed home by at least 12 other members of the club on a day when participation was lower than usual, possibly because of the Frank Duffy. Podium places went to Barry O’Mahony in Enniskillen where he placed 3rd in 19:12, and to Peter O’Toole who also placed 3rd in Waterworks in Belfast in 18:05. In the Antipodes, our Australian exile Kris Ryan took 3rd place (24th overall in a field of 236) in Paradise Point, Queensland. Elsewhere, Brian Scanlan paced in Malahide, finishing in 30th place in 21:35, whilst Jonathan Sykes took 71st spot in Marlay in 22:43. Emer Kenny celebrate her birthday by running in St Anne’s where she placed 146th overall, 16th woman, in 24:58. Further afield, we had two runners in Scotland. Aidan Hudner ran in Pollok Park in Glasgow where n a field of 452 he placed 54th in 23:18, whilst Andrej Kujikis ran in Edinburgh with 793 other runners, placing 345th in 25:41. Mairead Cashman ran in Bushy Park where she placed 128th and 32nd in 30:02, whilst in Longford we had several runners preparing for Sunday’s marathon relay race. Lisa Shine placed 34th and 7th in 27:53, followed by Orlaith de Burca (43rd and 13th in 29:40) and Mairin Shine (74th and 28th in 36:24). Finally, those runners who followed Steven home in Poolbeg were: David Timoney (10th in 20:01), Zlatko Kulic (11th in 20:30), Diarmuid Byrne (38th in 22:53), Fiona Bane (64th and 12th in 24:31), Ali May Hann (70th and 13th in 24:51), Sharon Woods (71st and 14th in the same time), Maria Pertl (84th and 18th in 25;59), Aoife Clarke (85th and 19th in 26:00), Darina Scully (95th and 23rd in 26;370, Cathal Murphy (100th in 26:49), Karla Woods (130th and 43rd in 29:27) and Mari Hansen (134th and 47th in 30:01). Brian won in a time of 15:32. Brian was joined in the championships by John O'Loughlin and Jeremy Tucker, both of whom also picked up medals. Indeed, John's was a veritable trove of silvers as he placed 2nd in his age category in all 3 events in which he competed: with times of 12.52 for the 100m, 26.41 for the 200m and 59.50 for the 400m. Jeremy also picked up silver in the javelin, where in his 2nd throw of the contest, he achieved a distance of 36.84m. Well done to all three athletes. Earlier in the week, on Wednesday evening, Brian and Kevin Lambe joined 370 other runners in the latest edition of the Kia Race series. This was the Castlepollard 5k hosted by North Westmeath AC. In a quality field Brian greatly distinguished himself, placing 2nd to DSD’s Hiko Tonosa in a great time of 15:06, whilst Kevin took 61st place in the gloam, demonstrating how far he has come recently by knocking 4 minutes off the time he recorded in the same event last year, finishing in 19:49. On Saturday, Stephen Hurley pulled off a similar result to that of Brian, finishing also in 2nd place in the 2019 edition of the Run the Ridge mixed mountain and trail 20km run in Co Wicklow, which involved a route starting and finishing in Laragh and taking in the Derrybawn Ridge. Stephen’s time was 1:41:10, only 6 seconds behind race winner Robin Mooney, in a field of 76 competitors. Then, on Sunday morning, on a damp day everywhere, we had at least 8 runners in the Kilcock 10 miler. Race winner Sean Hehir declared that it was his fastest 10 mile race in recent years, which gives him some encouragement for upcoming challenges, which no doubt include the marathon, and the fast pace of the relatively flat course can be seen in the overall results. Sean ran 49:45 and women’s race winner, Niamh Devlin, recorded 61:11, just 19 seconds ahead of Donore’s Sinead Lambe. Our first runner home was Andrea Talpo who ran a satisfying 64:34 to place 57th in a field of 620 and he was followed by Pat Quill who ran 69:36 for 101st place. Hot on Pat’s heels came Katie McElroy (106th overall and 12th female finisher, in the same chiptime). Phelim Murray was next (146th in 72:46) and he was followed by Conor Parle (158th in 73:35). Olwyn Dunne wasn’t too far behind to cross the line, coming home in 77:14 for 206th place overall (41st female and 6th F50), having declared it to be a training run and slightly further back came Kate Murray (255th and 57th in 79:51). Carina Davidson completed the picture (273rd and 62nd) finishing in a time of 82:03. Apart from the Run the Ridge Run, there was one other race involving club members in the mountains last week. IMRA organised a handicap race in the Dublin Mountains where the start times were based on runners’ previous results. In the event, we had two of our colleagues who ran alongside 85 other competitors. Gavan Doherty placed 26th in the 7.62km race involving a 443m difficult climb over Tonelagee and his time was 52:04, whilst Berndt Heim placed 64th in 62:40. Further afield, we had at least two ultra runners competing over the weekend. Leo Lundy completed his 100th in the Two Tunnels race in Bath, where he had to run 20k of the 50k distance underground in disused steam train tunnels. Congrats to him. Meanwhile, one of our exiles in Canada (and there are now at least two!), Ian Kinsella, placed 6th in a 50k event in Squamish, British Columbia, which, from the photos, included stair climbing. Even further away, Donnacha McCarthy, our visually impaired clubmate who is also a triathlete, represented Ireland taking part in the 2019 Tokyo ITU Paratriathlon World Cup, where along with his guide Bryan McCrystal, he placed 6th in his event, an excellent achievement in extremely warm and humid conditions. Many congrats to them both! As usual, we had some excellent results from the various parkruns in which club members participated on Saturday morning. A first place finish was recorded by the ever-improving Katie Rogers in Poolbeg where she placed 10th overall with a time of 19:48 (the 10th fastest time by a woman in a parkrun in Ireland on the day). Aine Kenny (24th overall in 21:24) placed 2nd in the same event. In Fairview, Peter O’Toole was another first finisher where he ran 19:16. Anthony Owens was in the same event, placing 28th in 26:23. Another podium place went to Diarmuid Byrne in Poppintree where he ran 19:26 for 3rd, whist Fiona and Lisa Shine came close on Wexford Racecourse, where Fiona placed 4th (38th overall) in 25:47, with Lisa right behind in 5th (39th overall) in 25:48. Mairin and Anna Shine also ran in Wexford, where they respectively placed 87th and 105th overall (33rd and 45th) in 33:09 and 37:48. In Edinburgh Andrej Kujikis placed 386th out of a huge field of 850 in a time of 26:12, whilst Luke Davis took 11th spot in Marlay in 19:35, followed by Darina Scully (305th and 96th in 29:35). Paul F. Kelly ran in Tymon where he placed 73rd in 29:11, whilst Olwyn Dune ran in Cabinteely once again, where she placed 75th and 14th in 27:38. Gillian Curran ran well in Limerick where she placed 51st and 10th in 25:54, whilst David O’Donnell also had an excellent outing in Dungloe where he placed 5th in 21:40. Brian Scanlan took on River Valley again, coming home in 8th position in a time of 22:48, whilst we had 2 runners in Glengariff. Cormac McGuire placed 13th in 23:01, followed by Mairead Cashman (66th and 24th in 32:02). Finally, Katie and Aine were joined by at least 7 other Crusaders in Poolbeg. Thomas Martini added the parkrun to a training outing and placed 15th in 20:30 and he was followed by Dave Tuohy who crossed the line in 18th in 20:42. Further down the field came John Lohan and his wife Tara Murphy. John placed 44th in 22:54, whilst Tara came home in 55th and 10th in 23:56. Later, they were followed by Aoife Cowhie (90th and 22nd in 25:40), Maureen McGinley (128th and 39th in 29:22) and Mari Hansen (131st and 41st in 30:00). We start, however, with news of the success of the Irish team last weekend in managing to retain its First League status in the biennial European competition, helped by Andrew Mellon in the 4x400 relay. After it looked bleak for the Irish team to survive heading into the second day, along with several other excellent results, the relay team managed to finish ahead of Romania by 1.13 seconds, thus dooming the Balkan country to the relegation that had looked certain for Ireland for most of the day. The relay team recorded a season’s best time of 3:08.83. On the road racing front, the probable highlight was the Rock and Roll Half marathon which incorporated the national half marathon championships. Sadly, we did not win any medals this year, despite having at least 16 runners in the event, although Ciaran Diviney came close, placing 4th in his age category whilst guiding visually impaired athlete Declan Ryan of Thurles AC who trains with us. The course is notoriously challenging, taking in hills inter alia at Christchurch and Kilmainham and thereafter towards the finish in the Phoenix Park, so not a likely race for PBs. The day was overcast but conditions weren’t too bad with just a little drizzle in the air. John Mulvihill, in training, like Ciaran, for the Chicago marathon in early October, led our runners across the line, picking up 26th place in 75:41, followed by Adam Flanagan, another marathoner in training, who placed 37th in 77:46. Adam was followed by Ciaran (53rd in 79:11) and Rob Cross (66th in 81:18). Ciairain Kelly came next in 79th place (82:40), followed by Eoin Fitzpatrick (105th in 84:34). Rory Goldsmith followed, and he, like Eoin, is in training for the Dublin marathon. Rory placed 162nd in a field of nearly 5,500, in 87:26 and behind him came Alex Kennedy (172nd in 95:11) followed by Marty James (in training for Berlin and perhaps Dublin) who took 200th place in 89:05. Further back came Karl Walsh (353rd in 1:33:56) and Simon Kenny (453rd in 1:37:38). The first of our female competitors was next. Ciara Lynch placed 918th overall in 1:43:59, followed by Louise Vanwildermeersch (992nd overall in 1:44:57), Mary Dolan (3,323rd overall in 2:10:35), Eimear Deegan (3,821st overall in 2:16:29) and Lucy Collender (3,899th overall in 2:17:32). There were two other races on the day and we had at least one runner who took part in both. Enda Currid, who is just coming back from injury, placed 12th in the 5k in 19:37 ahead of more than 1,500 other runners, and also went on to place 30th in the 10k in 41:54 ahead of Gearoid Grogan who picked up 88th place in a field exceeding 1,700 in 46:16. The previous Saturday evening saw the 34th running of the Streets of Galway 8k, organised by Galway City Harriers. More than 30 Crusaders made the trip to the west coast. It was a soggy day there with the heavens really opening during the afternoon. As the race started at 7pm, the sky cleared for about 25 minutes and then the deluge started again as the majority of the field came into the finish. No one seemed to mind the weather as the atmosphere was as usual excellent, although we did have to dodge fairly deep puddles in places. It was also quite blustery, but that didn’t seem to affect us either. In what proved to be a quality field which included several top athletes who’d made the trip from Dublin, both our men’s and women’s teams likely podiumed (although we have yet to have confirmation of what prizes we won). In a field of more than 2,500 competitors, the men’s team were led across the line by club captain Michael Kiely who placed 7th in 25:49. Michael was followed by Berlin marathon-bound Joe Walsh who, despite arriving late for the race and slightly stressed, flew round the course in a PB time of 28:30 for 34th place and 2nd in his age category. Joe was followed by Alan Sheehy who surprised himself with a time of 29:34 for 76th place. Next came John Fahy with 30:04 (79th) and Michael Maughan in his 2nd race in 3 days (114th in 31:04). Michael was followed by Will Owens (another runner headed for Chicago) who placed 125th in 31:26 and David Timoney (135th in 31:34). The first of our female runners, Alma Hanevy, was next. Alma, who like Joe, is prearing for Berlin, is racing incredibly well at the moment and consistently is able to start out steadily but then step it up throughout the race, reeling in loads of runners in the process. Saturday was no different and her performance was impressive. Alma placed 138th overall, 9th woman finisher and 2nd in her age category in a time of 31:39. Eddie Nugent came next, limping over the line as he felt a problem with his hamstring early in the race, but still with an excellent time of 32:10 for 151st place. Eddie was followed by the ever-improving Kevin Lambe who took 164th place in 32:30 and then came Irene Gorman who recovered from a stitch early in the race to reel in several runners in the last 2km of the hilly course for 168th place overall, 13th female, in 32:40. Irene was followed by James Cottle who found that last 2k along Salthill Strand tough, placing 181st and 2nd in his age category in 32:54. Close behind James came Tim O’Donnell (187th in 33:01) just ahead of Aine Kenny (194th and 18th in 33:04). Members will be interested to know that Lorraine Healy of Moyne AC, who trains with the club and who joined us for the weekend trip, came next (198th and 19th in 33:11) and Lorraine was followed home by Luke Haran whose place and time remain to be verified but likely to be around 227th in a possible 34:00. The remainder of the contingent was led home by Gian Piero Allerta (262nd in 34:22) who will be running the Longford marathon in two weeks’ time, followed by Brendan Glynn (268th in 34:35), Fin Lawler (294th in 34:35), Dave Tuohy (297th in 34:38) who also ran a parkrun in Dublin the same morning, Gary Park (306th in 35:05), Rebecca Fleming (370th and 42nd in 35:43), Miriam Logan (393rd and 44th in 36:04), Kevin Lynch (405th in 36:28), Maria Kennedy (430th and 49th in 36:32), Grainne Regan (455th and 55th I 37:19), the Dublin marathon-bound athlete nursing a tight hamstring, Olivia McEvoy (490th and 64th in 37:31), Elaine Curran (875th and 181st in 41:32) and Emer Kenny (1,048th and 248th in 43:18), treating the race as a training run. The weekend was as usual great fun, the majority of us staying in the same block of apartments on the quays that we have enjoyed each year for the last 7 or so in which we have come en masse. There was much celebrating after the race, starting with consumption of the fine spread laid on by the organisers immediately after the race and finishing in the traditional musical manner as the sun came up to a much drier morning on Sunday. Leo Lundy reported that he ran a wine themed trail marathon (his 87th) on Saturday in Surrey and his next milestone will be his 100th official ultra this coming Sunday at the Two Tunnels 50k in Bath. Leo aims to be the first Irishman to reach that milestone and join the 100 Ultra club. All the best to him! Last Wednesday evening there was action on the track and in the mountains with the last grade meet of the season in Tallaght and a Leinster League mountain race in Wicklow. On the track, Mary Horgan ran in the women’s A1 graded 400m placing 2nd in 60.44, whilst John O’Loughlin also placed 2nd in the men’s C1 400m in 58.49. In the ABC1 1 mile race Rebecca Fleming placed 7th in 6:03.02, followed by Lisa Shine (10th in 6:16.63) and Maria Kennedy (11th in 6:21.36). Michael Kiely took on the men’s A1 mile race, placing 7th in 4:53.43, whilst we had 3 athletes in the D1 race: Antonios Gkogkakis who placed 2nd in 5:40.64, Brendan Glynn who placed 6th in 5:4752 and Paul Kelly (10th in 7:18.37). Joe McDermott was our lone competitor in the BC1 3,000m race, where he placed 3rd in 9:53.12. Then, on Wednesday evening, IMRA runners took on an ascent of Sugar Loaf Mountain. In a field of 184 on a course over and around the mountain involving difficult terrain over 7.5km, Warren Swords (another Dublin marathoner in training) took 5th place and 2nd in his age category in a time of 41:34. He was followed by Michael Maughan (who went onto run the Streets of Galway 3 days later) who placed 81st in 57:40. Next came Emily Glen (157th and 25th in 1:11:32), followed by Berndt Heim (77th in 1:23:23). On Saturday, Becky Quinn posted a winning time of 2:33:47 in the latest of the Leinster championship races. On the 25.5km circuit of Avonbeg with a climb of 1,345m over extreme terrain and in a modest field of 21 athletes, Becky took 7th place overall. Finally, we had some excellent results in Saturday’s parkruns. In Poolbeg Stephen Hurley and Katie Roger were first finishers, with Fiona Bane 2nd. Stephen ran 18:16, whilst Katie ran 20:23 (for 14th overall) and Fiona, 23:36 (for 44th overall). Meanwhile, Peter O’Toole, our lone runner in Fairview, was first finisher there in 19:23 and Derek Lawlor took first place in Shanganagh in 18:20, followed by Janet McManus (50th and 7th in 25:46). Further afield, Kris Ryan ran in Paradise Point in Queensland where she placed 3rd (23rd overall in a field of 208) in 22:05. Also, Niamh Corby, on her way back from a knee injury, ran in Cabinteely where she placed 2nd (8th overall) in a time of 22:06, whilst Olwyn Dunne ran in Athlone where she placed 3rd (20th overall) in 25:39. In Marlay, Luke Davis took7th place in a time of 19:11, followed by Kate Murray (90th and 11th in 23:44), whilst Diarmuid Byrne ran 21:11 to place 8th in Poppintree, followed by Maria Pertl who placed 9th (and 58th overall) in 25:34. Also in Poolbeg, Zlatko Kulic placed 7th in 19:42, follwed by Dave Tuohy (22nd in 20:53, before heading off to Galway). Niamh Quinn took 5th place (60th overall) in 25:16, followed by Mari Hansen (104th and 26th in 29:35), Karla Woods (124th and 40th in 31:56) and tailwalker Sharon Woods. Paul F. Kelly ran in Tolka Valley where he placed 19th in 26:12, whilst Liam Lyster placed 11th in Strokestown in 26:43. Darina Scully took on the parkrun in Belfast’s Victoria Park, where she placed 176th and 48th in 29:36, whilst Aidan Hudner ran in the park of the same name in Glasgow as usual. In a field of 402, Aidan placed 55th in 21:53. Colm Foley placed 39th in Griffeen Park in a time of 23:31, whilst Lisa and Mairin Shine ran in Bere Island where they placed respectively 62nd (and 24th) and 63rd (and 25th) in 34:47 and 34:58. The course for the DLR Bay road race takes runners from Sandycove via Seapoint Avenue along the coast to Monkstown, then heads up to Sallynoggin and ultimately back down via Glenageary to the finish on the seafront near Dun Laoghaire station. It’s quite a challenging route and the severe downhill in the second half of the race means the legs take quite a beating. Thankfully, the weather held up for the event and provided sunny conditions after a cool start with a bit of a breeze. There were more than 750 participants in the race and they were joined by at least 8 Crusaders. Dee Lawlor was our first man home in 22nd place in a great time of 36:50 and he was followed by Paul Reidy with a strong 38:16 for 30th spot. Kiera Roche, in 57th place overall and 5th female finisher behind winner Clonliffe’s Ailish Malone, was next across the line in a time of 41:30, followed by Liam Morris (69th in 41:38) who, like Ailish Malone, hasn’t been on the racing scene for some time. Gian Piero Allerta (in 132nd place with a time of 45:14) was next and he was followed by Olwyn Dunne, fresh of a flight from Bangkok, who not only placed among the top 20 women (187th and 20th in 47:11), but was also 4th F45. Next came Carina Davidson (322nd and 46th in 50:37) who was a late entrant, and then Maria del Carmen Jimenez Campos (358th and 59th in 49:15). Gavan Doherty had been in two minds whether to run the race, having completed a 15 mile run in 2 hours the previous day as part of his preparation for the Dublin marathon, but decided to run the race as a training run (932nd in 1:08:13). Of note, Dee, Paul and Kiera finished as 3rd placed mixed team out of 17 behind Sli Cualan and Sportsworld. Over the weekend Leo Lundy reported that he ran the 50k Spartans Way which took place in Counties Kildare and Offaly along the Grand Canal and members will be interested to hear that Lydia Bigley who has trained with the club recorded a PB of 46:18 in the Berlin Night Run 10k. On holiday on the French Atlantic coast, Tomas Dunne took part in a hilly 7.5km trail race which he finished in a great time of 30:53. Closer to home, over the weekend, Frank Hague joined 300 other runners in the Kinsale Regatta 5 mile race, one of Ireland's fastest 5 mile races with a steep downhill after 2km as the point to point event heads down from the hinterland to the coastal town, placing 13th in an excellent time of 29:18. There was the usual midweek action in the mountains with a race around Ballinastoe (White Hill) in County Wicklow. The IMRA-organised event enjoyed a field of 164 on a difficult course measuring 12km involving a climb of nearly 500m, but in dry conditions. We had 4 club-mates in the race. Warren Swords placed 4th and 2nd M40 in a time of 55:07 and he was followed by Gavan Doherty (37th in 64:34), Emily Glen (145th and 28th in 94:51) and Berndt Heim (154th in 100:08). Finally, we come to a round-up of the parkruns. We had to go abroad to find a first finisher from the club. Continuing their holiday in western Canada, Sarah Lyons and Phelim Murray ran in Okanagan with 66 other runners. Sarah placed 1st finisher (8th overall) in 22:59, whilst Phelim came home in 7th place in 22:48. All the same, we did have some podium finishes in one other event. In Poolbeg, Fiona Bane placed 34th overall and 2nd female in 22:26, whilst she was followed by Tara Murphy (42nd and 3rd in 23:31. Just behind Tara came Sharon Woods (47th and 4th in 23:55). Others to run there included Zlatko Kulic (8th in 19:35), followed by Gillian Curran (58th and 7th in 25:08), Ava Rose Clarke (68th and 12th in 26:03), Cliodhna O’Reilly (81st and 19th in 27:38) and Karla Woods (108th and 35th in 30:48). There were good runs in Marlay where Luke Davis placed 9th in 18:49 and Kate Murray placed 118th and 13th in 24:28. In River Valley Brian Scanlan ran well within himself to finish in 22:03 for 6th place, as did Emer Kenny who placed 197th and 48th in 27:25 in St. Anne’s, whilst Colm Foley placed 36th in Griffeen Park in a time of 24:28. Darina Scully was our lone runner in Malahide where she placed 292nd and 104th in 32:11, as was Anna Shine in the parkrun on Wexford Racecourse where she placed 40th and 8th in 26:41. Aoife and Paul Kelly ran in Poppintree where Aoife placed 74th and 21st in 29:48 and Paul ran 29:56 for 77th spot. Mairin Shine took 34th and 18th place in Tolka Valley in 32:51, whilst Mary Dolan, in training for the Dublin marathon ran 29:28 for 46th and 17th spot in Glen River.
