It was a memorable weekend of racing for the club and we had at least 100 members involved in the different events on offer. Perhaps, the most memorable will be the somewhat controversial first holding of the Dublin Race Series half marathon outside of the Phoenix Park. One observer described it as comic opera in “Dona Baté”, but perhaps that is being a little too harsh. Nevertheless, next year’s event will take some rethinking. For health and safety reasons and cost and limitations imposed by the OPW, the organisers had sought and found an alternative venue with a course mapped out between Donabate and Lusk. Unfortunately, with the race HQ based in Newbridge House, with its limited access, they perhaps underestimated the impact on the local infrastructure at a time when there were already major diversions in place in the area for pipe laying etc. Local traffic mixed with race traffic combined to create gridlock early on in the day and it only got worse. Abandoned cars on the country lanes as race entrants tried to make the start, which ultimately was delayed by nearly 40 minutes, exacerbated the situation even more, apparently, and forced several potential competitors to give up and turn for home instead of running. There were also problems at the start line (about a 10 minutes’ walk from race HQ) in that the field gathered quite early on and there was no obvious room for warming up for club athletes in an environment where we are at risk of suffering from the cold as we hung about. Moreover, we were not allowed to cross in front of the start line to warm up on the course and it was challenging, working one’s way from the back to the front of the assembled field of the more than 6,500 competitors on such a narrow country lane, with deep ditches on either side. We were told later that this venue has been committed to for three years, so it will be important perhaps for next year, assuming the venue is retained, to have a start line in a wider space (as would have been the case in the park), perhaps actually on the grounds of Newbridge House. The organisers also dodged a couple of bullets in that parking was in potentially swampy fields that would have created problems in the rain and it was cool enough, so a missing water station (presumably because of traffic problems preventing set-up) towards the midway point (the folding tables all stacked up against hedges) was not too much of an issue.
It was a blustery day and the course was tough as there were numerous undulations with sharp climbs in the first half, particularly at about 9k before we turned off the Skerries Road. The hill that we had been warned about at the Man O’War pub where we turned for home at the half way mark was relatively benign, by comparison to the unrelenting “mountaineering” we had handled beforehand. Then, when we made the turn from the race’s highest point (about 100m of climb) to run down back to Donabate, we ran straight into a ferocious and increasing headwind (that we might have largely avoided had the race started earlier). Decisions had to be taken whether to take the racing line and be heavily exposed or hug the hedgerow and add a few more metres to the race. Most people kept to the side. So, those training for the marathon should have derived a great deal of confidence from having mastered such a tough course. Given all the challenges, it was amazing that nearly all of our runners made it to the start line (one notable casualty, however, being Joe Dunne who had been lined up to pace), although one or two of our faster runners, Kiera Roche in particular, ended up having to weave their way through the field (Kiera had a 4 minute differential between gun and chiptime, meaning that she was likely deprived of a top 10 finish). She wasn’t the only elite runner to experience this. Mullingar’s Kevin Baker, who trained with us in the recent past, had a 15 minute gap between chip and gun times (and otherwise would have been in the top 10). We had 53 finishers behind the surprising race winner (in just under 67 minutes), Bereket Gebraslase, an Ethiopian 61-minute half marathoner who himself started out 10 seconds after the gun and had to work his way through the masses early on, having not heard the starting siren. Among the men, we had 14 runners place among the first 250, led home by our first finisher, Ger Forde, with yet another PB. Ger placed 20th in a great time of 1:17:33. Another super run came from James Moran (31st in 1:19:24) and then also from Paul Dempsey who recorded a huge PB to place 62nd in 1:21:23. At one point in the race Paul was able to see ahead of him the bike leading the female race winner, Maria McCambridge. So he set her as a target and managed to come home in front of her, a major scalp for him. Seamus MacFloinn was next (99th in 1:23:10), followed by Karl Walsh (101st in 1:22:28) who started from quite far back, as did Joe Walsh and Brian Leonard (128th in a PB time of 1:24:31 and 146th in 1:25:05, respectively). Andrea Talpo flew through the race to record a PB of 1:26:18 and 165th place, whilst Will Owens also ran a sensible pace in the first half to take 191st spot in 1:26:47. The remaining runners in the top 250 were Pat Quill (200th in 1:27:43), Brian Scanlan (205th in a PB time of 1:27:33), Philip Hamilton, who ran brilliantly in his first half marathon by tucking into a 5 man group for the 2nd half of the race (217th in a time of 1:27:15), Zlatko Kulic, who found significant energy in the second half (242nd in 1:28:37), Dave Cuddy (244th in 1:28:37) and, just behind him, James Cottle (245th in 1:28:51). James found the first half particularly tough and then the long rather boring pieces in the latter stages of the race took their toll, but he was pleased to have kept Zlatko in sight after having met up with him at the halfway point. In the end James was able to take the age category win for the 2nd year in a row, having overtaken his rivals early on in the race and having given himself a margin of nearly 2 minutes by the finish. Top 500 places also went to Aido Doyle (464th in 1:32:44), Dave Tuohy (436th in 1:32:44) and Andrew Kinneen (450th in 1:33:48). We had at least 17 female Crusaders in the race, led home by Adrienne Jordan in 4th place (143rd overall, in 1:25:41) who found the last 3 miles a challenge. Next came Kiera Roche, whose difficulties are documented above. Kiera placed 30th woman, 452nd overall, in 1:29:50. What is more remarkable about Kiera’s effort is that it was her birthday and she had a flight to catch at 1:30, so that the race starting at nearly 10:10 must have significantly increased her stress levels. Thankfully, she made the flight! We had at least 11 women make the top 250 in their gender. Kate Murray placed 72nd (909th overall) in 1:40:24, followed by Triona Quill (1,012th overall, 86th woman, in 1:40:57), Ruth Dwyer (1,136th overall, 107th woman, in 1:42:50), Katie McElroy (1,137th overall, 108th woman, in a PB time of 1:42:49), Aoife Clarke (1,193rd overall, 120th woman, in 1:43:31), Ciara Lehane (1,270th overall, 141st woman, in 1:44:37), Darina Scully (1,422nd overall, 181st woman, in 1:46:55), Celine Bonce (1,652nd overall, 229th woman, in a PB time of 1:50:12), Ela Szkamruk (2,057th overall, 327th woman, in 1:55:58), Nina Hurley (2,152nd overall, 346th woman, in 1:55:40) and Maria Kennedy (2,212th overall, 358th woman, in 1:56:32). The following day we also had a super turnout in two events. The winner of the previous day’s half marathon decided to try his luck in the Rathfarnham 5K, but hadn’t reckoned on the local talent of Kilkenny farmer, Brian Maher (and who recently turned 40) and Raheny’s Conor Dooney (national track 5,000m champion), who both managed to finish ahead of him. The race took place on a fast and flat single loop course that has remained unaltered for many years and it was great to see that all the Crusaders who ran broke 23 minutes. We had marvellous runs from Karl Fahy and his partner, Niamh Boland, both of whom recorded PBs on the day. In a field of nearly 760 competitors, Karl took 12th spot in a time of 15:23, whilst Niamh was 7th woman home (97th overall) in a time of 17:42. They were part of a contingent of 22 runners from the club. Niamh, Ilona McElroy (120th overall, 14th female finisher, in 18:18) and Orla Kennedy (132nd overall, 15th female, in a time close to her PB of 18:35) achieved 2nd place in the team event, whilst Niamh Corby (140th overall, 17th female, in 18:55) managed, despite some heavy celebrating a night or two earlier, to take 2nd spot in her age category. Other notable performances came from John McAuley and Michael Wycherley, in his first race after a long time injury, who worked together to record PBs for each of them. John finished 2nd Crusader in 60th place in a time of 16:46, whilst Michael was one place and one second behind John at the finish. Paul Flynn found it tough but still recorded a PB time to come home in 90th place in 17:29, followed by John Thuillier (94th in 17:37). Michael Maughan paced himself well to take 121st spot in 18:19, ahead of Brian McGuckin, a sparring partner (126th in a PB time of 18:26) whom he hauled in over the later stages. There were also PBs for Lesley Ann Doughan (158th overall, 20th woman, in 19:25) and Brendan Glynn (171st in 19:41) and good runs from everyone else: Dee Ni Chearbhaill (204th overall, 33rd woman, in 20:34), Hugh Larkin (207th in 20:23) who paced Nina Holmes (208th overall, 35th woman, in the same time). Emer Kenny continues to improve, running 21:34 (247th overall, 53rd woman) and Emer was followed by Alex Romano (248th in 21:29). Ruth O’Connor was next (272nd overall, 61st female, in 21:59), followed by Aisling Dilworth (323rd overall, 78th female, in 22:54). The contingent was completed by Bob Lyne who race-walked the course in a (walk) PB time of 32:53. Members will be interested to hear that Tipperary’s Lorraine Healy, who trains with us, placed 193rd overall, 30th female, in a time of 20:11. On the same day, we fielded 7 athletes in the Berlin marathon. We had high hopes for them and our confidence was well-rewarded. In tough rainy conditions Brian O’Kelly ran one of the fastest times for a Crusader in recent history and by running negative splits. Brian recorded a PB of 2:32:58 and he was followed by Rob Cross who, having missed a slug of training through injury and illness, still recorded a time close to his best of 2:37:46. Tim Francony was next in a PB time of 2:47:49 having run even splits and he was followed by Mick Blighe who, like Wilson Kipsang, suffered from stomach cramps towards the latter stages and, having been on for a time close to 3 hours had to settle for 3:11:54. Next came Fin Lawler in 4:37:26. Finally, Lucy Collender came home in 4:55:47. Most, if not all, of those finishers, will also take on Dublin at the end of October. A thought should be spared for Johannes Frederking, our Hamburg exile, who had to pull out after 35k with stomach problems and a slight hip injury. Leo Lundy and Kris Ryan travelled to Kerry over the weekend for the Listowel Endurance festival. 24hr, 12hr, 6hr events and an obscure cumulative (3 x 7K) race were all timed to finish at 6pm on Saturday. Leo and Kris chose the 6hr event which, with the other races, were run on a challenging 1,200m loop in the park in the centre of Listowel (the course gave 1900ft of climb over marathon distance). The weather was wild and extremely wet. Leo's 53k earned him second male while Kris' 59k was good enough for second female overtaking the 3rd spot competitor in the dying seconds. This was Kris' second podium of the day after being 3rd overall and 1st woman in the Newcastle West parkrun that morning enroute to the main event. We had a decent number of runners in the Saturday morning parkruns and a few top finishers. Frank Hague placed first finisher in the more than 100-strong field in Porterstown. Frank ran 18:16, followed by Kevin Flynn (47th in 27:42). As mentioned Kris Ryan was first female finisher in Newcastle west. In a field of 23 runners, Kris placed 3rd overall in 24:32, with Leo Lundy taking 6th place in 26:59. Lisa Shine was also first female finisher in River Valley, taking 4th place overall, in a time of 22:52. Sister Fiona placed 4th (13th overall) in 26:09, followed by Orlaith de Burca (17th overall, 7th woman, in 26:31) and mother Mairin took 48th spot overall (20th female) in 31:32. The field measured 80. Tom Dunne travelled to join 310 other runners in Woking, placing 11th in 20:28. Aoife Quinn was in Tramore, taking 7th place overall, 2nd female, in 23:12 among a field of 72. Brian Carroll also managed a podium finish in Griffeen, placing 3rd in 19:05, whilst in St. Anne’s Diarmuid Byrne placed 57th in 22:48, followed by Mary Dolan (128th overall, 23rd woman, in 26:43), Lorraine Fitzsimons (260th overall, 94th female, in 31:37), the indefatigable Maria Pertl (289th overall, 114th woman, in 33:46) alongside Fiona Bane for company (290th overall, 115th female, in 33:47). The field measured more than 330. Denis Murphy ran in Corkag’s first park run, placing 24th in 22:00 in a field of nearly 280 runners. Finally, in the 5th running of Poolbeg and a field of 75 runners, Zalan Kovacs was our first Crusader home, in 11th place (21:47), followed by Pauline McParland (59th overall, 19th woman, in 29:10) and by Ciara McElligott (67th overall, 23rd woman, in 31:50). The big one coming up for most of our runners will be next Saturday in the Dublin Race Series to be run for the first time around the Donabate area (Lusk etc). In the meantime, several of our club-mates took part in three half marathons on offer this weekend: Charleville, Danesfort and Belfast.
We must start, however, in congratulating Donnacha McCarthy and his guide Dave Tilly on their superb 4th place finish in rainy and slippery conditions in the World Paratriathlon championships held in Rotterdam on Saturday. They have come so far in such a short timeframe. It’s a brilliant result. On Saturday morning, Dominick Branigan warmed up for the following day’s Danesfort half marathon in the same county, Kilkenny, by winning the Medieval marathon 10K event (ahead of more than 180 other runners) in rainy conditions in a time of 36:08. He then went on to join nearly 340 other competitors in Danesfort on Sunday, placing 5th in a super time of 1:19:26 (just behind Sean Murphy of United Striders who placed 4th in 1:18:41), a highly creditable achievement, and one that will have given him a lot confidence. Dominick was joined in the 10K by Tom Dunne, who placed 6th in 41:59 and by Kris Ryan who ran the marathon along with nearly 150 other competitors. Despite some tampering of direction markers, Kris was able to finish the race in 65th place overall (9th woman finisher) in a time of 4:05:26. Then, on Sunday, we had 4 runners in the well-organised fast and flat Charleville Half, which was run in perfect conditions by all accounts, with, as a consequence, loads of PBs, including for our runers. In a field measuring more than 1,130, Colm Kernan was first Crusader home, in 145th place (in a PB time of 1:25:40), followed by a PB-likely run from Damien O’Brien (180th in 1:27:11) and then Rob Browne (261st in 1:31:15) and Denis Murphy, who confirmed he did record a PB with his time of 1:34:17 (325th). Of note was the fact that 66 runners broke 88 minutes, whilst nearly 250 broke 90 minutes. On the same day, Kevin Regan, who, like several of the others already mentioned, is training for the Dublin marathon, ran in the Belfast Half marathon with its substantial field. Kevin ran well to record a PB in coming home in 1:26:40, 237th place, behind overall race winner Gideon Kipsang (1:04:36) and women’s race winner, Olympian Caitriona Jennings (18th overall, in a new women’s course record of 1:15:37). There are a couple other road racing results to report. Over the weekend Donal Foley took part in the St. Brigid’s 5K (Blanchardstown and Castleknock), placing 45th in a gun time of 23:08 in a field of 145 competitors. Further afield, Gian Piero Allerta, in a training warm-up for the Dublin marathon, ran 4:09 in a marathon in the scenic port of Cesenatico near Rimini in Italy. Rebecca Fleming, who currently resides in Malta, helped her local team to come third in the Attard 5K in Malta. Rebecca actually took 3rd place individually in the women's race (101st overall out of more than 500 competitors) in a time of 21:09. As usual, we finish with a round-up of the weekend’s action in the parkruns. A few performances stand out. Mick Blighe took on the tough Cabinteely a week before running in the Berlin marathon (it’s standard practice to look to sharpen up speed the weekend before a marathon), placing 3rd in 18:49 in a field of 104 runners. He will have derived considerable confidence that his speed hasn’t deserted him. In the same event, Orlaith de Burca came home in 67th overall (19th female) in 29:20. Meanwhile, in Porterstown, Diarmuid Byrne and Darina Scully, also in marathon training for Dublin, took, respectively, 2nd and 12th (overall) places (2nd female) in, respectively, 18:42 and 21:41. In a field of 107, they were joined by Kevin Flynn (48th in 27:20) and by Maria Pertl (admirably continuing to pound out the miles) (100th overall, 47th female, in 35:01). In Marlay Park, among more than 400 runners, John McAuley and Alex Romano, both preparing for Rathfarnham next week, placed respectively 4th (17:48) and 65th (22:44), whilst, in St. Anne’s, Colm Kernan prepared for the following day’s half marathon by placing 22nd out of nearly 380 runners, in a time of 20:07. Colm was followed by Ciara Bolger (116th overall, 18th female, in 24:30) and Lorraine Fitzsimons (262nd overall, 92nd female, in 30:14). Neil Brown and Leo Lundy ran well in their respective parkruns. Neil ran with more than 100 other runners in Johnstown, Co. Wexford, placing 14th in a super-fast time of 21:48, whilst Leo joined a field of 54 runners in Clonmel, taking 13th place in 24:08, rebuilding his speed after his marathon and ultramarathon efforts. Brian Scanlan, a relative newcomer to the club, took on Malahide and its field exceeding 250, placing 10th in 19:09, and, finally, our largest showing was in Poolbeg. We had no fewer than 7 participants in the 82-strong field. Tony Owens was our first runner home in 17th spot (20:04). Tony was followed by Russell Murphy (17th in 22:23), Fiona Shine (27th overall, 3rd woman, in 23:35), her sister Lisa Shine (28th overall, 4th woman, in 23:47) just behind. Next came Gillian Errity (35th overall, 8th woman, in 24:26), Olwyn Dunne (43rd overall, 12th woman, in 25:17) and Mairin Shine (73rd overall, 31st woman, in 32:31). There’ll be quite a bit of racing this coming weekend. Apart from the Race Series half marathon on Saturday, featuring several marathoners in training, there will be the Rathfarnham 5k on Sunday with probably at least 25 club-mates running in that, as well as the Berlin Marathon, with perhaps half a dozen in that event too. We have three serious fund-raising events each year. One of them is the Docklands 5K which we organise ourselves, another is the club calendar and the third is providing Athletics Ireland with enough stewards to ensure that the Grant Thornton 5K, held each September, goes smoothly. It is fair to say that we do an excellent job and that, in no small part, is thanks to Jim O’Neill, who celebrates his 76th birthday today and who is a superb organiser of the stewarding activities. Thanks should also go to all the members who turned out on the night and performed their duties well, sometimes with considerable difficulty from local residents or office workers wanting to move their cars during the race. Last week’s event went off without a hitch and more than 4,000 participants enjoyed a well-organised race that took in parts of the Docklands course, but also added in the Samuel Beckett Bridge, which was twice crossed, as well as some running round the houses on the south side of the Liffey off Sir John Rogerson’s Quay. Conditions were excellent and the high winds that had been present during the day abated somewhat as the runners came along the North Wall Quay. With the twists and turns it is probably a slower course than the Docklands 5K, but it certainly attracts a lot of runners, prizes for whom were only available in teams. This is an important consideration as women’s race winner Catherina McKiernan in particular might have had a bit of a shock reading the results to see that she was theoretically beaten by an unknown female runner. In fact, the runner was a man, and, as long as each team got the right numbers, in the grand scheme of things, it effectively did not matter which participant got which number as there were only bragging rights for individuals and no prizes. For the record, all the same, the overall race was won by Rathfarnham’s Louis McCarthy in 15:25 from ex-Crusader Ray Hynes who was some distance back in 15:36. We had at least 16 clubmates in the race. Ciaran Diviney (8th in 16:03), John Mulvihill (14th in 16:21) and Vinnie McGuinness (16th in 16:30) were all well within sight of each other throughout the race and they were joined in the top 50 finishers by John Mannion in his first race in an age (having had a nasty leg injury for some time) (50th in 17:13). Joe McDermott (69th in 17:37), John Thuillier (77th in 17:46) ran well, as did Joe Walsh (109th in 18:09) whose mixed team, which included his wife, Donore’s Alma Hanevy, picked up a podium trophy. The male contingent was completed by Diarmuid Byrne (132nd in 18:27), David Carter (133rd in 18:28), Andrew Kinneen (like Diarmuid, in marathon training) (142nd in 18:37), Tomas Mahony (145th in 18:39), Gary Park (177th in 18:57) and Jocelyn Dufetel (830th in 21:59). We did not have many female club members in the race, but those that did run performed well. Amy Wright placed 405th overall in 20:21 and Amy was followed by Emer Kenny who ran a season’s best 21:38 (709th overall) and by Louise Dobbyn who is still getting back into competitive running (1,175th overall, in 23:03) Over the weekend we likely had runners (including Fiona Bane) in the Great Pink Run in the Phoenix Park which involved two events (a 5K and a 10K), but results are yet to appear. Once they are published, the report will be updated. On Saturday, John Fahy took part in the John Buckley Cork City 10 mile race. On a blustery day, in a field involving more than 550 finishers, John ran 1:03:59 to place 31st, behind race winner Mark Hanrahan (49:39). Also on Saturday, Olwyn Dunne, next year’s mini marathon race director, went on a scouting trip to France to participate in Paris’ version of the event, La Parisienne. In a field of nearly 21,000, Olwyn completed the unusual distance of 7k in a time of 36:38 and placed 170th. Of note, Barbara Sanchez placed 2nd in the race in 24:28. Also on Saturday we had much success in the BHAA 5k organised by Pfizer on its campus in Newbridge. The 104-strong race was won by Karl Fahy in 15:59 (a 4 second margin of victory), with his partner Niamh Boland, placing 2nd in the women’s race (15th overall in 18:23). So, a great success for Sage’s parents! Pablo Sanchez, another runner returning to the racing stage after a longish absence, placed 5th in 16:09 and Pablo was followed by Ronan O’Reilly (24th in 19:42), Robbie Moore (52nd in 21:41) and Paul Kelly (91st in 27:26). On Sunday, several Crusaders trooped down to Blessington, Co. Wicklow to take part in the Lakes 10k along with nearly 360 other runners. In extremely wet and highly windy conditions, Kiera Roche (34th overall in 39:01) and Ilona McElroy (38th overall in 39:31) placed respectively 3rd and 4th behind female winner Laura Shaughnessy and runner-up Sarah Mulligan. Dee Ni Chearbhaill placed 7th woman finisher (68th overall) in 43:59, winning her new age category. On the men’s side, Peter O’Toole took 16th spot in 37:08, followed by Brian Leonard, a runner who has run this race before and knows it well but in better weather conditions (22nd in 38:05) and Tom Dunne (60th in 42:48). Further afield, club president Niall O’Connell reports that, the day after getting off a flight to Canada, he placed 2nd in the 6th event of Ontario’s MEC 5K race series. In a field of approx. 250 runners, on a flat out-and-back course on a nature reserve on Lake Ontario in excellent weather conditions, Niall put in a time of 18:40, a great time as he comes back from injury. For Leo Lundy, this week’s fun was at the city marathon in Wroclaw in southern Poland. It is one of the bigger events on Poland and Leo was reminded a lot of Berlin (architecture and route) and Amsterdam (canals, bridges and tram tracks), but maybe not quite as grand. The start and finish was in the Olympic stadium. Chip time was 4:35 which Leo felt was significantly better than recent outings and is hoping that a sub 4 result in Dublin could still be on. As usual, we had a decent turnout in the weekend’s offering of parkruns, 15 at least spread over 10 events. Our best performances came in the new Poolbeg parkrun, with Ciaran Diviney taking first place (16:31) ahead of 55 other runners, followed by John Mulvihill (2nd in 16:37) and Shane Collins (3rd in an unspecified time, but likely below 17 minutes). Seamus McFloinn, who is in marathon training, equally distinguished himself well with a first place finish (19:10) ahead of 118 other runners in Bushy Dublin. In the same event Ronan Gill placed 48th in 26:38. In Fairview, Aoife Quinn came 2nd (13th overall) in a field of nearly 50 runners. Aoife’s time was 26:25. Brian Carroll ran 18:52 in a field of 167 in Griffeen to place 4th, whilst, in Marlay, John McAuley also placed 4th in a time of 18:12 in a field of nearly 450. Another marathoner, Darina Scully, ran 31:04 to place 159th overall, 50th woman, in Malahide along with 233 other runners, whilst Ciara Bolger came home in 123rd place overall, 18th woman, in 25:01 in the 331-strong field in St. Anne’s. Maria Kennedy ran on her own in Kilkenny, taking 49th overall out of 188 (10th woman) in a time of 24:45, whilst Donal Foley placed 8th (21:47) and Martina White, 31st overall (7th woman), in 26:47 in the 65-strong field in Porterstown. Finally, Maria Pertl continues to distinguish herself by running parkruns, placing 80th overall (34th woman) in 34:46 in a field exceeding 100. Maria’s partner Diarmuid came in just behind her in 34:47. Grant Thornton 5K Overall place Name Cat. Nevertheless, we did have runners in some interesting events, particularly in the mountains. We start, however, last Tuesday with John Fitzsimons, who, on the day after his 80th birthday, recorded an excellent 17:39 in his new age category in the 13th and final round of Raheny Shamrocks’ Lord Mayor Series 2 mile races. In a field of nearly 80 runners, John placed 71st. Later in the week Leo Lundy completed his 100th marathon in 100 weeks (the Mogwai Ultra in Surrey). Leo ran 29.5 miles in 6:13:34. He is now hanging his racing shoes up for a short while! Then on Saturday, we had 3 Crusaders in the Dingle Half marathon. Conditions for the race were good for the first few miles but then the wind and rain came in and miles 6 through 10 were extremely exposed to the elements. Thankfully, however, the wind was at the runners’ backs for the last few miles. Barry O’Neill, who is training for the Dublin marathon, was first home for the club, finishing in a time of 1:38:02 and 94th out of a field of more than 1,700 runners. Barry was followed by Gerald Hoare (212th in 1:45:16) whose twin brother Martin won the event. The small contingent was completed by Carina Davidson with a PB time of 1:49:09 (302nd overall, 62nd female finisher). Also, over the weekend a few of our clubmates took part in the Mondello Half marathon, involving 6 full laps of the race track in Kildare. In dry conditions and in a field of nearly 170 runners, Diarmuid Byrne took 3rd place in 1:30:00, followed by Paul O'Meara (16th in 1:40:49) fresh from the previous week's marathon in Longford, Aoife Clarke (32nd overall, 8th female finisher, in 1:46:43), Russell Murphy (34th in 1:47:39) and Darina Scully (36th overall, 9th female, in 1:47:56). Four plucky Crusaders headed abroad to the mountains this weekend. Federico Corradini, our Italian exile, and Pat Quill took on the 167.5km Ultra trail Mont Blanc (UTMB), with Federico completing the gruelling event in Chamonix in 38:18:00 and Pat not too far behind in 44:23:29, extremely good results considering that a third of the field of approx. 2,540 dropped out as a consequence of the stormy conditions. The race involved a climb of over 9,400m and covered three countries: France, Italy and Switzerland. Then Jason Kehoe and Brian McGuckin joined a large contingent of Irish runners competing in the 17th World Masters Mountain Running Championships in Slovakia on a challenging course of just under 10k. Several members of the Irish team came home with individual medals, one of which was gold, with the men’s M35 team also taking the gold medal ahead of Slovakia and team GB and NI with a total score of only 13 points. Jason Kehoe distinguished himself with 16th place in the M35 category in which Ireland clearly had a strong presence. Brian competed in the M45 category and took 51st place behind gold medal winner Des Kennedy, the Irish team in that category narrowly missing out on a podium place. We had 10 runners in the Cabinteely parkrun on Saturday morning, marking the 100th run for Mairin and Lisa Shine. The first finisher was also a Crusader, for the second week in a row. In warm conditions Dave Carter marginally improved on his time last week by finishing ahead of 163 other runners in 19:30. He was followed by Donnacha McCarthy and his guide Dave Tilly (3rd and 4th in 20:24)Tom Dunne (9th in 21:11) and then by Orlaith de Burca (99th overall, 30th woman, in 30:23), Fiona Shine (100th overall, 31st woman, in 30:26), Paul Kelly (125th in 33:03), Lisa Shine (131st overall, 49th woman, in 33:43), Mairin Shine (132nd overall, 50th woman, in 33:49) , Olwyn Dunne (133rd overall, 51st woman, in the same time) and by Don Anderton, in his first parkrun, in 149th in a time 37:18. We had runners in the second running of the Poolbeg parkrun on Saturday. The event attracted nearly 90 participants, with Russell Murphy placing 19th in 22:19 and Gillian Errity, 34th overall (7th woman) in 24:35. We had first finishers in a further two parkruns. In Fairview, Peter O’Toole finished ahead of a field of nearly 70 runners in a time of 19:06, whilst Paul Flynn took first finisher spot in Shanganagh in a time of 18:19 ahead of a field of nearly 140 runners. Nearly all the other parkruns equally had only one Crusader participating, apart from St Anne’s where we had two. Colm Kernan took 24th place in a field of nearly 390, and a time of 20:28. Colm was followed by Aoife Quinn (102nd overall, 13th woman, in 23:59). Thereafter, Neil Brown came home in 3rd place in 22:16 in the 44-strong field in Tullow. Tomas Mahony placed 11th in a field exceeding 300 in Malahide. Tom’s time was 18:52. Brian Carroll ran 19:39 to place 9th out of 195 in Griffeen, whilst Thomas O’Rourke, took 24th spot in a field of 131 in Naas, with a time of 23:59. Finally, Mairead Cashman ran in Ballincollig, taking 227th place overall, 80th woman finisher, in a time of 34:41. The field measured 263. Dingle half marathon Overall place Name Cat.
