What a fantastic weekend of running! On Saturday afternoon several of our clubmates descended on Tyrrelstown in Co. Westmeath to take part in the Leinster Novices. We were able to field two complete teams. Then on Sunday we were able to enjoy the spectacle of the largest ever Dublin City marathon, being held for the first time on a Bank Holiday weekend Sunday, and in which we fielded at least 60 runners, the largest ever assembled by Crusaders. We start with the cross country. As often is the case with Leinster fixtures there was some uncertainty over the timing of the races and this was the case on Saturday, when the women’s race started ahead of a schedule which had never been fully outlined. Two of our runners in the race, Niamh Corby and Grainne Regan, arrived just as the gun was about to go off but were relieved to have got there just in the nick of time and although it was an inconvenience not to be able to warm up, they acquitted themselves well in the event. Apart from Niamh who ran extremely well in the circumstances to place 27th in a time of 14:23 in the 4k race, the two stand out runners in the Cru showing were Orla Kennedy who had an extremely strong run to place 24th (14:14) in a field of 100 women and Lisa Shine who placed 53rd (15:07) following a blistering finish. Everyone ran well in calm, dry conditions (the sun appearing from time to time) on an undulating grassy course which had no mud really in evidence, but which presented a few challenges. Indeed one runner from another club holding a top 10 position at the time did a nasty somersault on a tricky downward turn, landing on her head, lucky enough not to be concussed on the quite hard surface. When the smoke had cleared the team had placed 6th out of 11, only 8 points off the Dunboyne team in 5th place, certainly giving us a lot of hope for the future with the likes of Grainne, Darina Scully, Lisa and Sinead Keane running the event for the first time, joining such stalwarts as Dee Ni Chearbhaill and Emer Kenny. The men gave us a lot to cheer about, coming home with the gold medal in the club event and two of our runners, Alban Coghlan and Rob Cross, also scoring in the gold winning Dublin county team. The race was won in a dogfight by a young Kilkenny athlete from his clubmate and there was no one to touch the pair (the women’s race was also dominated by a single athlete from Mullingar). Alban, however, ran extremely strongly, at one stage climbing up into 5th position, only to fall back slightly at the end to 7th. Rob also clung on bravely for a 9th place finish, demonstrating that he is clearly well on the road back to his old form. Behind them Michael Kiely (25th) and Michael O’Conor (27th) were running in a largish group together for most of the race, with John Mulvihill (41st) slightly further back and finding the going tough. Alban, Rob, and the two Michaels, Kiely and O'Conor, were our 4 scorers. Michael Maughan (100th) had an excellent race and was unexpectedly well ahead at the finish of his teammates Alan Sheehy (128th), Brian McGuckin (129th) and Will Owens (133rd) who all, nevertheless, had decent showings in the strong field of 151 seniors and masters athletes in the 6k race. So we come to Sunday and the running of the Dublin marathon. Because of the change of day, a record field of 19,500 had registered, but then as a rule there is always an attrition in races of about 12-13% and this event was no different. We saw 16,833 finishers, which in itself was probably a record for the race. We were blessed with little wind and a dry but slightly humid day. The starting temperature was actually quite high at about 13 degrees and because what little wind there was came from the south, some of us were sweating quite profusely in the early stages of the race as we headed north into Phoenix Park. The descent down the Upper Glen Road into the wind gave us our first respite in fact. Some of us have run the Dublin marathon on several occasions and this was the second running on the new course with its straight-line finish along the Merrion Road into Mount Street Lower, but still it was a shock to some of us to meet the first quite severe hill just before Christchurch and inside the first mile. Indeed, it only dawns on you as you progress through the race that Dublin really is quite challenging as marathons go and apart from some short sharp downhills like at just after Christchurch down onto the quays (burning quads like no man’s business), the descent from the climb at Castleknock down back into Phoenix Park and the descent on the Upper Glen Road, one has the impression that the first half of the race is one hard uphill slog (particularly just after Chapelizod in several places). The second half of the race with its climb at Milltown and the exaggerated claims of the hill’s severity on Roebuck Road is pretty tame by comparison, but by that time everyone is just clinging on after the huge effort of the first half. The race started at a frantic pace as one would expect (but should try to avoid!). However, no one anticipated meeting an abandoned large motorcycle parked at right angles to the course in the middle of Fitzwilliam Street and within 300 metres of the gun going off. Thankfully, we were able to negotiate it well enough. The race settled down somewhat after that and one had the usual impression of going backwards as runners shot past. Clearly some were going off at a crazy pace and would be reeled in over time, as proved the case. Indeed, towards the front of the field, the likes of Joe Walsh, Tom O’Dowd and Paul Dempsey were able to overtake 400 runners in the second half. Amy Brogan and Aoife Clarke reeled in about 1,500 runners and most impressively, first timers Ciara Lehane and Maria Kennedy took nearly 3,000 competitors after the halfway point. Others had similar experiences. It is hard to mention all our runners but a few come to mind, particularly if they had PBs (of which we had at least 29 amongst the 60 we’ve recorded) or were first timers. Brian O’Kelly led our contingent home with a 20 second improvement in his PB (74th place in 2:41:46), followed by James Moran (101st in 2:45:41), possibly running for the first time. Seamus MacFloinn was able to extricate himself from the 4th wave (along with Bob Cahill, Mick Blighe and Matt Cranley) and start in the 1st to help the scoring efforts of the Cru senior team, duly recording a PB time of 2:48:01 (130th), followed by Ian Kinsella (207th in 2:51:31), a few weeks after his 2:46 effort in Berlin. John Thuillier was next with a massive PB improvement (263rd in 2:54:44) having run alongside Ian until the 22nd mile, at which point Ian took off. There were other sub-3 results for Pat Quill (333rd in 2:57:16), Bob Cahill (348th in 2:57:37) and Warren Swords (389th in 2:58:19). They were followed by two runners who also recorded PBs to get below 3 hours: Joe Walsh, who knocked 7 minutes off his previous best to hit 2:59:15 (438th) and newcomer Tom O’Dowd (448th in 2:59:30). First timer Eugene McDonough got agonisingly close to the sub-3 objective, but nevertheless will be extremely happy to have made 3:00:56 (508th place). James Cottle gave up on his sub-3 attempt early on as he realised the difficulty of holding onto the 3 hour pacing group that caught up with him on Chesterfield Avenue in the Phoenix Park. All the same, he was able to focus on another objective, a national title for his age category, as one of the principal competitors in his age group came up alongside him just on the descent down the outside of the park after Castleknock. James latched onto the runner, admittedly allowing a gap to emerge after 9 miles which at times measured about 100m, but still within sight. When he saw the Civil Service Harrier runner ahead starting to come back to him at about 17 miles he took his chance and surged past him, never to look back. In fact at the half way stage, although he did not realise it, James was in 5th place in the age group and among the 200 runners he reeled in during the second half he was able to bag the first 4, ending up winning County and National Championships with a 22 seconds cushion on guntime. It’s possible that he also led the O/50 Crusader men’s team to a podium finish in the county championships (yet to be confirmed). James finished in 590th place in a time of 3:04:21, a course PB improvement of about 3 minutes on last year and just under a minute behind his PB in Rotterdam in the spring. Behind James came PBs for Tom Clarke (642nd in 3:05:08), Paul Dempsey (699th in 3:07:04), Adrienne Jordan, who found the second half extremely tough after being on for a sub-3 finish at the halfway stage (828th overall, 42nd woman and 9th in her age category, in a time of 3:09:42) in her first marathon and Phelim Murray, who also experienced a bit of difficulty in the second half (970th in 3:12:10). Sub 3:30 places went to the visually impaired Donncha Walsh (3:15:55), noting that Declan Ryan, another visually impaired runner who trained with us in the winter, ran 2:51:24, Mick Blighe (3:16:20), Kevin Lynch (in 3:16:30), Diarmuid Byrne ( 3:17:38), Matt Cranley (3:21:13), Sean Smith (3:23:02), Andrew Kinneen (3:24:27), Victor Fairbrother (3:24:22), Ger White (3:24:45) and Denis Murphy (3:28:28), a member of the M50 team along with Russell Murphy (3:57:47) and Leo Lundy (3:57:21). Additionally, Gavan Doherty ran a creditable 3:36:40 in his first marathon. Mention should also be made of Niall Farrell, whose training had been severely disrupted by recent injury, but who recorded an excellent PB time of 4:14:53. On the women’s side, behind Adrienne, there were great finishes for a lot of runners despite some injuries during the event. Emma O’Mahony had a recurrence of a back problem and had to walk a bit (but found running fast the best antidote). After being on for a 3:45 finish before her back gave way, Emma still was able to run a PB of 3:54:35. Aoife Clarke also had a scare but was able to finish in a PB time of 3:42:03. Fiona Bane also had some issues (principally stomach) on the way round which slowed her down a lot. Still, Fiona was able to finish in a decent time of 4:24:00. Maria Pertl experienced some difficulty towards the end of the race and was tended to by medical staff, but was still able to re-emerge and finish the race. All credit to her. Maria finished the race in 4:44:24, having been on for a sub-4 hour finish. There were some great results among our female teammates. Amy Brogan ran a PB of 3:41:31, as did Kate Murray in her first marathon, with a 3:44:22 finish. Other debutantes, Katie McElroy and Ruth Dwyer, ran side by side for the entire race, coming home with the same super time of 3:45:23.There were also excellent results for first timers Ciara Lehane (3:57:52), Maria Kennedy (3:58:21) and Celine Bonce (4:14:09). Tribute should be paid to the wonderful support all the runners received from other members of the club. At times our clubmates’ ubiquitous presence was manic and most welcome. It got many of us round and as usual was second to none! Several of our members took advantage of the parkruns on Sturday morning. Paul O’Meara took on Malahide and placed 4th in a field of 242 participants in a time of 18:55. Killian Barry was our sole representative in Marlay among 465 runners, placing 18th in a time of 19:03. Aidan Hudner, our Glaswegian exile, ran in Victoria Park with 285 other souls, finishing in 80th spot in a time of 22:53. Brendan Kieran ran in Hartstown, coming home in a time of 22:53 and 19th place out of nearly 50 runners. Fiona Lane made a rare foray in Shanganagh, taking 103rd place overall, 43rd woman finisher, in 30:49 and in an event where Niall O’Connell paced the 25 minute finishers, Mairin Shine ran 29:31 to place 69th overall, 21st woman finisher, in Cabinteely. Finally, Donal Foley ran an excellent 22:04 to place 6th in the 73-strong field in Porterstown. Leinster Novices XC (women’s 4k) Overall place Name Cat. Westmeath on Saturday followed by the first ever Sunday running of the Dublin City Marathon. We are anticipating a decent turnout in both events. There are, nonetheless, a few results to report. Details are at this time sketchy but we understand that, whilst he has been on holiday in Hawaii, James Murphy won a 7.25 mile race in Maui over the weekend, pushing two US marines into 2nd and 3rd places. Once we have more flesh to add to these bones we will update the report. Accidentally omitted from last week’s report was Rossen Gamev’s excellent result in the Sofia Half marathon last weekend. Rossen took 28th place overall out of more than 670 runners with a PB time of 1:23:37, almost 4 minutes faster than his PB in the Dublin Race Series Half Marathon in September. A few of us took advantage of the parkruns on Saturday morning to get some speed into our legs before next weekend’s Dublin marathon. Neil Brown and James Cottle were joined in Shanganagh by a bunch of marathoners from Kilcoole being trained by Gary Crossan and Maria McCambridge so that the ranks were practically doubled to 150 participants and the run was particularly fast, the first finisher coming home in the 3rd fastest time for the event. James placed 25th in a time of 20:05, whilst Neil took nearly a minute off his time last week to place 58th in 24:06. Another marathoner, Kate Murray, ran 24:35 in Marlay among more than 500 participants to place 179th overall, 29th woman finisher. Diarmuid Byrne and Maria Pertl revisited Poppintree, with Diarmuid taking 14th spot in 22:31 and Maria, 32nd overall (6th woman home) in 25:12. Denis Murphy also took the opportunity to test his speed with a 21:37 result in Father Collins. Denis placed 6th out of a field of 52. Elsewhere, Niall O’Connell took on Cabinteely along with Tom Dunne, Lisa and Mairin Shine. Among a field of 94 runners, Niall took 3rd place in a time of 19:50, whilst Tom ran 21:26 to place 7th. Lisa came home in 30th place overall (4th woman finisher) in 24:56, followed by Mairin in 84th position overall, 25th woman, in a time of 32:25.Sharon Woods was our sole participant in Malahide with over 300 runners. Sharon placed 70th overall, 6th woman, in 23:41. Aidan Hudner ran once again in Glasgow, finishing in 53rd spot out of nearly 290 participants, in a time of 21:59. Finally, Brendan Kieran placed 16th in Hartstown. Brendan’s time was 23:25 and the field measured 48 runners. Malahide #207 Overall place Name Cat. M There was a super Cru participation in the effective inauguration of a purpose-built XC course up in Abbotstown at the new National Sports Campus on Sunday afternoon. The course looks likely to be the one to be used by Athletics Ireland going forward so it was good to have an outing on it. It has to be said that for a relatively flat course on an otherwise dry day, it’s tough, maybe because of the soaking it has received over the past few days, which made the grass surface fairly soft, but also it’s quite muddy and sandy in places. There is one drag of a hill but it’s not particularly daunting (and nothing like the course used for the same race in previous years in the Phoenix Park). The event was the renamed Gerry Farnan and since last year it has been known as the Autumn Open XC Festival. More accurately, it can be described, despite the presence of overseas runners (including Welsh, Belgian and Polish senior athletes), as the Irish trials for the 5-nations masters competition scheduled to take place in mid-November in Perth in Scotland. As usual, the women’s race took place first and, in a quality field numbering 105 athletes, Fionnuala McCormack was, naturally, able to establish a clear lead from the gun. In the early stages of the 6k race Caroline Crowley found herself in a small group several metres behind an initial posse of 3 or 4 runners who themselves were about 100m behind Fionnuala and Caroline gradually reeled them in to come home in a strong 3rd place, just pipped in a sprint finish by a Polish athlete, Paulina Kaczynska for second place and taking some decent scalps in the process, a clear indication that she’s back to fighting form. Fionnuala inevitably finished in first place in 20:30, with Caroline’s 20:08, just 2 seconds back from Paulina’s 21:06, enough to confirm her as 2nd Irish woman home. Ann-Marie Glynn, winning the masters’ race, was 4th in 21:14, with Laura Shaughnessy (21:16), Rio Olympian Kerry O’Flaherty (21:22) and Siobhan O’Doherty (21:38) further back. Orla Drumm ran well to place 16th in 22:33 and Orla was followed by women’s captain Ilona McElroy who placed 38th in 24:09. Niamh Boland and Niamh Corby ran together from the early stages until the former was able to break away and establish a 15 second advantage by the end. Niamh Boland placed 51st in 25:00 (10th in her age category), whilst Niamh Corby came home in 55th place (8th in her age category) in a time of 25:15. The contingent was completed with the strong presence of Lisa and Fiona Shine, with both running creditably. Fiona placed 72nd in 26:43 and Lisa, 80th in 27:40. The men’s 8K race, with 174 finishers, was equally as exciting, with a strong run from the winner, Mullingar’s Mark Christie, who came in 5 seconds ahead of Adam Nowicki of Poland in 24:59, followed by Freddie Sittuk of Raheny Shamrocks in 3rd, a further 4 seconds back, in 25:08. They had all been part of a 4-man leading group that only broke apart towards the end. We had 11 finishers in the race, led home by Alban Coghlan who finished in 47th place (27:55). After making sure he had his shorts on, there was another strong showing from Ciaran Diviney who took 53rd spot overall (28:10) and 5th in his age category, followed closely by Vinnie McGuinness (57th in 28:15). John Mulvihill was not too far behind (71st in 28:52), with Rob Cross on his tail (72nd overall in 28:55 and 20th in his age category). Members will be interested to hear that United Striders’ Sean Murphy, who trains with the club, placed 120th (18th in his age category) in 30:35 and he was followed closely by Garret Dunne (122nd in 30:39). Newcomer Jim Stagg was next in 133rd place (31:07), followed by Michael Maughan (146th in 32:29 and 22nd in his age category). Brendan Glynn completed the contingent with a 40:40 finish to place 174th. The incorrigible pair of long distance runners, Leo Lundy and Kris Ryan, took part in an AA Milne-themed running event over the weekend in Ashdown forest (inspiration behind 100 acre wood) in East Sussex. There was a tough trail 6 hour challenge (involving a climb of over 3,500 feet over a marathon distance and hugely technical). About 150 runners took part each day. On Day 1 ("Winnie the Pooh wander") saw perfect conditions and Leo completing 31.6 miles for 6th overall but Kris’ 36.8 miles saw her take 2nd place overall and 1st woman finisher. A big storm came in overnight and conditions on day 2 (the "Bounceathon") were muddy and treacherous on the steep downhills. The race started off in lashing rain and Leo finished at marathon distance for what he called a mid-pack finish (34th) but Kris' 31.6 miles was again good enough for 3rd place overall and 1st woman home. Naturally, everything was in fancy dress! Numbers appeared generally to be down in the parkruns on Saturday, probably influenced by the foul weather that started off the day. In Marlay, Eddie Nugent joined 263 other participants and came home in 7th place in a time of 18:34. David Timoney and upcoming Dublin marathoner Kate Murray also ran, with David placing 19th in 19:50 and Kate, 104th overall, 17th woman, in 24:23. Several other Dublin marathoners were in action elsewhere. In St. Anne’s, in a field of 187 runners, Matt Cranley placed 13th in a time of 20:13, whilst Denis Murphy tagged on the parkrun to a much longer session and placed 52nd in 23:44. Meanwhile, Maria Pertl placed 19th overall (5th woman) in the 43-strong Poppintree parkrun. Then, Mairead Cashman placed 98th overall (23rd woman) in 27:44 in the same size field as St. Anne’s (187) in Ballincollig in Cork. In terms of our other runners, Suzanne Martin is making her way back to form with a 22:48 time (15th overall, 3rd woman) in the 52-strong field in Cabinteely. Dave Cuddy was 2nd in Athlone out of 31 finishers. Dave’s time was 20:35. Finally, Neil Brown ran 25:19 to place 32nd out of 75 runners in Shanganagh on Saturday morning. It was a fine weekend, weather wise, and the Cru profited from super, dry, windless and at times sunny, racing conditions around the country. On Saturday morning at least 27 of us registered for the first BHAA XC races of the season, a combined start 2 miles for women and 4 mile mixed event, its seventh running, held in the grounds of Castleknock College outside the northwest corner of Phoenix Park. There is considerable new building work taking place at the college at present and so the course had to be slightly modified, which made it marginally longer than previous years, and we missed leaping through the long jump sand pit that had been a feature of the past. Still, apart from a bit of running on tarmac in places, which would have dented the spikes that some of us were wearing (not out of great necessity it should be added, but there’s something about authentic XC that encourages it!), the course is essentially grass and trail around several rugby pitches, with a little climb in places. The bottom end of the course was also quite narrow and conducted through long grass under trees to prevent runners from interfering with the touch line of a match in progress, but it didn’t really affect us too much and was as usual a fast race for most. We had 25 finishers, with a couple of casualties, including Niall O’Connell who had enjoyed an early start the night before to his birthday celebrations on the day of the race. Niall did run strongly and felt surprisingly good until he developed a stitch on the 2nd lap (of the 4 we had to run in the 4 mile race) and had to pull out. This actually relieved his pursuer, James Cottle, who had been getting slowly intoxicated from taking in the fumes from Niall’s breathing. The women’s race involved 45 runners and Niamh Corby was, as expected after her solid performance in the Dublin novices last week, our lead athlete home. Niamh finished extremely strongly in 7th place overall, 2nd in her age category, in a time of 13:59. Fiona Shine was not too far behind in 9th place in a time of 14:21. Edel Haverty was next in 13th place (15:01) and Edel was followed by Dee Ni Chearbhaill (19th in 15:29 and 3rd in her age category), Geraldine Clements (21st and 2nd in her masters category in 15:43) and by Emer Kenny (22nd in 15:45), all 4 being equally veterans of last week’s Dublin novices. Mention should also be made of coach Susan Walsh who won her age category in 16:49 (30th overall). The 4 mile mixed race was graced by the presence of Maria McCambridge, which gave the event added stature. Our Niamh Boland was otherwise the only other female in the race. Both ran strongly. The Cru contingent, making up nearly 17% of the 127-person field, ran well and left its mark. First across the line for the club was Alban Coghlan, in his second outing of the season. Alban finished in 8th place in a time of 22:26. Michael Kiely was not too far behind in 11th (22:41) and Ciaran Diviney, only 10 seconds further back (14th overall, winner of his category, in 22:51). Ciaran was followed by John Mulvihill (18th in 23:15) and by Rob Cross, running well as he emerges from injury (21st overall, 2nd in his masters category, in 23:27). Michael O’Conor and Garret Dunne were not too far behind either, coming home in 24th and 26th places (23:39 and 23:46). There was then a little gap before Neil Monahan came across the line in 43rd place (25:56), followed in reasonably rapid succession by Alan Sheehy (45th in 26:08) and James Cottle (46th overall, 1st in his age category, in 26:16). Eamonn McWalter, in his first race in a while, placed 52nd in 26:50 and he was followed closely by Niamh Boland, bravely taking on the extended distance, (55th in 27:01). Marius McNicholas is working his way back to form and he ran well to place 69th in 28:41, followed closely by Tomas Dunne (71st in 28:43). Men’s captain, Mike McGovern, in his first race in a while, placed 77th in 29:26 and he was likely preceded by Michael Maughan whose result appears to have gone astray. Michael had some difficult moments in the race and did well to cross the finish line after a bout of nausea that probably added a couple of minutes to his time. Brendan Glynn ran steadily to place 87th in exactly 30 minutes and he was followed by the recovering Robbie Moore (94th in 31:05) and finally by Paul Kelly who took 122nd spot in a time of 40:23. In other races over the weekend, there was an age-group win for Kate Murray in the Donadea 10K. Kate is training for the Dublin marathon at the end of the month. In a field of more than 200 runners she placed 42nd overall (7th female finisher) in 46:28, just behind Kris Ryan (another Dublin marathoner) who placed 40th overall, 6th woman home, in 46:01. Further afield, Johannes Frederking carved out a 45 second PB improvement by running 34:46 to place 82nd out of more than 6,500 runners in the Great Berlin 10K. Closer to home, Luke Haran was our only competitor in the SMRC Urban Run 5K in Limerick on Sunday. On a hilly course, that took in parts of the course we competed on earlier in the year, Luke also got a PB, a 1 second improvement, by finishing in a time of 19:57 and placing 7th in a field exceeding 200 competitors. Of much interest was the fact that Olympic rower and sister of Caitriona, Sinead Jennings, ran in the 10K pushing a stroller containing 2 of her children. She broke 41 minutes! Leo Lundy reported that he had an odd challenge this weekend. This was the "It’s a numbers game" marathon double, the prize being one of the biggest marathon medals in the world and at 1.25kg the heaviest that is also personalised. Around 50 runners took part in day 1 between Walton on Thames and Hampton Court along the Thames Tow Path. As in Ireland, it was beautiful running weather. Leo managed a 4:17 for 19th out of 50 finishers on that day. Day 2, in similar conditions, went the other way along the Tow Path towards Walton village. Again, 50 took part with around 30 doing both days. A rather painful 4:50 was good enough for 21st out of 50. The medal was something else! Donnacha McCarthy, one of our visually impaired athletes, with Darina Scully to guide him, took part on Sunday in the Run for Tony 5k event in St. Anne’s Raheny. In the chiptimed race, Donnacha crossed the line in 25th place out of more than 300 runners, in a time of 22:27. Finally, it was the weekend for the Irish ¾ marathon, more recently known as the Athlone ¾ marathon, customarily held just before the Dublin marathon. Runners scheduled to participate in the marathon have to be careful not to race this event too strongly as there is always a danger of leaving your Dublin marathon in Athlone. The usual suspects, Gary O’Hanlon and Pauline Curley, unsurprisingly won their respective events and we had a smattering of Crusaders in the race, all of whom are down to run in Dublin at the end of the month. On an undulating course and in a field of nearly 1,000 runners, Joe Walsh, whose Donore Harriers wife, Alma Hanevy, came home in 3rd place, placed 33rd overall in a great time of 2:16:46. Likewise gaining a good deal of confidence, Aoife Clarke ran 2:55:45 to place 381st overall, 73rd woman. Aoife was followed by Fiona Bane, also with an eye on a sub-4 hour marathon, who placed 416th overall (84th woman) in 2:58:42. In advance of their marathon duties on 30th October, Olwyn and Joe Dunne were there to help pace and duly (and as usual) completed their task with satisfaction, coming home in 578th and 580th places respectively in times of 3:09:09 and 3:09:12, Olwyn being the 84th woman home. The report finishes as usual with a round-up of action in the parkruns on Saturday morning. Darina Scully, in advance of her assistance to Donnacha McCarthy on Sunday, participated in the event in Poppintree along with Diarmuid Byrne and Maria Pertl. Diarmuid took great satisfaction in pacing Darina in the run, encouraging her across the line in a huge PB improved time of 21:16, to be first female finisher and 6th overall in a field of 69 runners. Diarmuid himself placed 7th in 21:17, followed by Maria who was 20th overall, 2nd female finisher, in 24:11. In Marlay Francis Furey placed 142nd in 24;19. In the 465-strong field, Mary Noelle Rohan placed 356th overall, 118th woman, in 30:39. Hugh Larkin continues to work his way back to fitness, placing 74th in 22:33, followed by Denis Murphy (133rd in 25:01) in the 323-strong field in St. Anne’s. Aidan Hudner continues to plug way in Glasgow, taking 102nd place out of 323 runners in a time of 22:49. In Shanganagh Neil Brown ran 26:09 to place 73rd in a field of 155 participants. Lastly, Lisa and Mairin Shine took on the hilly Cabinteely again. Lisa placed 25th overall, 5th female finisher, in 24:48, whilst Mairin came home in 52nd place overall, 17th female finisher, in a time of 28:48. BHAA Teachers 2 mile XC Overall place Name Cat. The 4K women’s race went off first with 76 competitors, 9 of whom were representing the club. From the start Niamh Corby was able to establish a position in a second group after a group of 4 runners (representing Rathfarnham, Dublin City Harriers together with 2 sisters from Sportsworld), broke away and developed a clear lead which was not to be overcome. The Rathfarnham girl, Clare Sullivan, won in 14:42, followed by the two Brouder sisters (helping their team to first place). With a little back and forth in the group throughout the race Niamh was able to hold on for 8th place (in 15:57) at the finish. Finishing strongly behind her, after only a couple of weeks of training with Crusaders, came Sinead Keane in 25th place (16:45) and Sinead was followed by Gillian Earley (37th in 17:11). Our 4th scorer was Grainne Regan, but her result is missing from the results page (soon to be updated). The chances are it has no bearing on the outcome and the team came home in a highly creditable 6th place. Behind Grainne came Edel Haverty who placed 44th in 17:26. Geraldine Clements was next in 52nd (17:48), followed closely by Dee Ni Chearbhaill (54th in 17:50), Emer Kenny (57th in 17:55) and Darina Scully, enjoying a baptism of fire (62nd in 18:14). In the men’s race we fielded 11 runners in a field of 93. Again, there was a breakaway group of 4 runners, but this time we had a Crusader in the mix. Vinnie McGuinness, clearly well on the way to full recovery from his recent injury, briefly led the field but in time had to settle for 4th place (in 20:40), but well clear of the second group which had contained John Mulvihill. John managed a top 10 place (10th in 21:04) and the two other scorers, not so far behind were Michael O’Conor, who briefly had a rough patch but who finished strongly (17th in 21:24) and a fast finishing Ger Forde who’s having an excellent year (20th in 21:32). The 4 scorers were able to bring home team bronze for the club with 51 points, only 5 points off Raheny in second place, Rathfarnham taking team gold. Peter O’Toole quietly got on with the business and ran a solid race placing 31st in 21:53 and he was followed by our recent Berlin marathoner (and who will also run in Dublin later in the month), Ian Kinsella (33rd in 21:56). Eddie Nugent was next with a great sprint for the line (45th in 22:29), followed by John McAuley (50th in 22:35) who was just not able to hold Eddie off at the end. Garret Dunne also found the going challenging but pushed hard (51st in 22:44) and our team was completed by Neill Monahan and Simon Everard (69th and 86th respectively in 23:49 and 25:55, respectively). On Thursday evening on a twisty course in Sandyford in breezy conditions we had several runners take part in the DSD-organised Twilight team Challenge. Just over 500 runners took part in the evening event which included Irene Gorman who placed 18th overall (6th female finisher) in 19:18, Matthew Morrow, in marathon training for Dublin, 36th in 19:58, Helena Walsh, 59th overall (214th woman) in 20:48, Jocelyn Dufetel (83rd in 21:38), Suzanne Martin coming back from injury (93rd overall, 20th woman, in 21:50), Kevin O’Connor (112th in 22:19) and Leo Lundy, on a training run before another marathon exploit at the weekend (132nd in 22:55). Saturday in the Phoenix Park, and near where we train, saw the Simon community 5 miler. It took place on a reasonably challenging course starting on the Acres Road, then following up Chesterfield Ave, leading down the Upper Glen road, along the snake and up the Khyber pass. Thankfully, it was dry after a wet early morning and not too windy. In a field exceeding 1,000 participants, our two intrepid runners acquitted themselves well. Seamus MacFloinn (who last ran anonymously in the recent Grant Thornton 5K..spotted but not timed!) placed 13th in a time of 29:33 and John Fahy took 33rd place in 32:34. Also, on Saturday, Catherine Thornton was our sole representative in one of the 3 events in the Run Galway festival. Catherine took part in the 10K and in a field of more than 1,330 runners came home after a steady race in 32nd place overall, 8th woman finisher behind women’s race winner Siobhan O’Doherty, in an excellent time of 41:51, which would have been even better had the course not measured about 200m long (as reported by several participants). It was a pity, as the conditions for racing were excellent, a crisp sunny morning with little wind on a fast and flat out-and-back route along the coast from Galway city through Salthill. On Sunday Kris Ryan and Leo Lundy took part in the Monaghan Marathon (part of the Monaghan marathon festival). In a field of 102 finishers, Kris managed 3:49:09 for 24th place overall (4th woman) and Leo found himself in some difficulty and placed 51st. The race took place in and around Rossmore park which included a brass band, bag pipes and 2 cheile bands en-route. It was a hilly course on a crisp but nice day. Unfortunately, Leo developed a leg issue around 10 miles and hobbled to a 4:21:42 finish. Nevertheless, both our runners had course PBs. James Cahill reports that he ran in the Cologne Half marathon on Sunday, recording a PB time of 1:28:46, a solid improvement of 5 minutes over his time last week in the Dublin race series half. After last week’s hiatus we had plenty of participants in Saturday’s parkruns. Mairin, Lisa and Fiona Shine made a welcome return to competitive running, with Fiona placing as first woman finisher (7th overall) in Cabinteely in a time of 21:30. In a field of 64, Mairin and Lisa came in side by side in 50th and 51st places overall (18th and 19th female finishers), with the same time of 29:27. Orla Kennedy matched Fiona by placing first woman finisher in Lees Road, Ennis, Co. Clare. Orla was just one second off her PB in 20:13, and 3rd overall in a field of 45 runners. Dave Cuddy placed 3rd in Athlone out of a field of 49. Dave’s time was 20:13. Darina Scully warmed up for the following day’s cross-country, running 22:00 and placing 2nd female finisher (98th overall) in a field of 53 in the Father Collins parkrun. Dave Tuohy took on the challenging Knocknacarra parkrun in Galway, placing 3rd in 20:36 among 78 other runners. In Cardiff Sharon Woods placed 174th overall (30th woman) in 25:35 among a field of 475 runners, whilst in Glasgow, Aidan Hudner continues to pound the trails of Victoria park, coming home in 68th out of 237 runners in a time of 23:07. Finally, in St. Anne’s Raheny, Denis Murphy placed 43rd in 22:51 followed by Emer Kenny who walked the entire event with her mother to celebrate the latter’s milestone birthday, coming home in 242nd (out of 244), with her mother just ahead, in a time of 47:44.
