Goal Mile 2017
As you may be aware Crusaders have helped to host a Goal Mile event in Irishtown ever since the Stadium opened. We are doing so again this year. There will be a Goal Mile event on Christmas Day in Irishtown Stadium from 10am to 12 noon. Please advertise this to your friends and share on Facebook. A poster is attached, if you are able please print off and place in your place of work or local shop. Some help will be needed on the day, if your free please e-mail Jim O’Neill (jimhelenon@iol.ie ) Backrow: Don Anderton, Karl Fahy, Neil Brown, Gillian Errity, John McAuley, Michael O'Conor, Phelim Murray, Paul Kelly, John Mulvihill. Middle row: Jason Kehoe, Niamh Boland, Adrienne Jordan, Rob Cross, Niamh Corby, Kris Ryan, Mary Dolan, Aisling O'Connor, Carina Davidson, Louise Dobbyn, Marius McNicholas, Grainne Regan. front row: Mairin Shine, Fiona Shine, Caroline Crowley, Sarah Lyons, Lisa Shine, Rachel Yorke, Katie McElroy, James Cottle, Emer Kenny, Ruth Dwyer, Amy Brogan, Darina Scully. Every now and again Crusaders turn out en masse for a particular race and it’s impressive how well we do on such occasions. Saturday was no different for the BHAA Irish Life mixed 6k cross country. Report is below. But first, we start with recording that on Saturday Ciaran Diviney ran in the British and Irish Masters cross country International up in Derry. In a 4-lap 8k race for the M45 category, Ciaran came home as 5th scorer and 17th overall to help the Irish team take the silver medal behind England. On Saturday morning at least 37 club members took part in the BHAA XC race held in Santry Demesne in dry and relatively calm but chilly conditions. The ground was, however, wet underfoot because of overnight rain and there was indeed a lot of mud and a bit of standing water on the course in parts. The 1,500m lap was not too dissimilar from the course used for the recent Dublin Senior championships and had all the ups and downs of that particular event. One downhill corner especially got churned up and had to be negotiated with care. Sometimes, however, it was easier just to plough through the mud in order to maintain the racing line. The field measured just shy of 200 runners and so we represented nearly 20% of the participation. A lot of Cru women turned out (well outnumbering Cru men in a field where the men generally outnumbered the women), looking for an alternative to the now-defunct Women’s Meet and Train League, and they weren’t disappointed. It was an excellent event, well-organised and the new barcode and manual timing seemed to work well generally (although a couple of names appear twice and one or two runners not at all, as the bibs were perhaps confused by the spotters: so that some of our women's results from approx. overall finishing position 100 may not be entirely accurate). The results (both individual and team) came out speedily enough too. We were, as usually, brilliantly well supported in the event. Karl Fahy won the race in an impressive 20:09, 23s ahead of his nearest rival. Rob Cross was next Crusader, in 5th place in a time of 21:07 and 1st in his O/40 age category. Top 50 spots also went to John Mulvihill (11th in 21;34), Jason Kehoe (14th in 21:57), Michael O’Conor (29th in 22:53), John McAuley (30th in 22:56) and Karl Walsh (38th in 23:54). James Cottle ran negative splits to record a time of 25:06 (62nd place and 1st O/60), having reeled in his age category rivals, followed by Brendan Glynn (79th in 26:09), running a super race. It was good to see Marius McNicholas working his way back to form (86th in 26:18) and he was followed by Phelim Murray (87th in 26:18), David Long (91st in 26:27), beginning his preparations for the Dublin masters XC in January, and by Tom Dunne (97th in 26:40), to complete those in the top 100 places. In the women’s race within the race, Linda Byrne was unstoppable in 25th place overall (22:31), but Caroline Crowley (40th overall, 2nd woman home in 23:59) and Adrienne Jordan, not too behind her (45th overall, 3rd woman, in 24:07) ran well, considering they’re working their way into form. Niamh Corby was next across the line, feeling slightly under the weather (72nd overall, 9th woman, in 25:51), but still able to win her age category. Then came Katie McElroy (88th overall, 13th woman, in 26:19), Rachel Yorke (89th overall, 14th female finisher, in 26:23), Grainne Regan (108th overall, 16th woman, in 27:03 and 2nd in her age category) and Ruth Dwyer, hard on her heels (109th overall, 17th female, in 27:05). Another top 20 position went to new ladies’ captain Lisa Shine (116th overall, 18th female, in 27:27). Similarly, a notable result came from Kris Ryan, who came 3rd in her age category with 145th place overall, 27th woman home, in 29:06. Team prizes went to Amy Brogan, Katie McElroy and possibly Ruth Dwyer, along with Fiona Shine, Michael O’Conor, Marius McNicholas, Karl Walsh, Niamh Corby and Robbie Moore. Most agreed that it was a most enjoyable cross country race and we’re now well into the XC season. Great preparation for next year’s track and road racing. Paul O’Meara tackled the Philadelphia marathon over the weekend, placing 233rd in a field of 8,000 runners and in windy conditions once again delivering a sub-3 hour performance. In fact there was a strong headwind for a lot of the race, only really turning into a tailwind for the last few kilometres. Paul ran with even splits to record 2:59:55! There were no first finishers for the club this week in the parkrun round-up, partly, perhaps because we had so many running in the BHAA race. We did, however, have participation in 9 parkruns around Ireland, with the heaviest concentration in Poolbeg and Cabinteely. In the latter, with a field of 120 runners, Dave Carter continued his improving form with a 2nd place finish in 19:09. Dave was followed by Colm Foley (27th in 23:52) and Olwyn Dunne (30th overall, 4th female, in 24:10). Meanwhile, in Poolbeg, David Timoney took 11th place out of more than 80 runners, in a time of 20:08. David was followed by Zalan Kovacs (21st in 21:21) and Edwina Quinlan (43rd overall, 7th female, in 25:35). Another good run came from Aoife Quinn who placed 21st overall, 2nd woman, in a time of 24:02 in Fairview. The field measured more than 50 runners. Diarmuid Byrne and Maria Pertl participated alongside 108 others in Poppintree, with Diarmuid placing 5th in 20:05 and Maria taking it easily. Matt Cranley continues to improve on his buggy times in St. Anne’s, with 58th place in 21:28. Matt was followed in the field of 380 runners by Lorraine Fitzsimons who came home in 283rd place overall, 82nd female, in 29:56. Eddie Nugent was our lone representative in Marlay. Among 460 runners, Eddie placed 13th in 19:46, as he comes back from recent injury. Likewise, Orlaith de Burca was our singleton Crusader in Shanganagh. Orlaith placed 79th overall, 18th female, in 27:34. The field was 131 strong. In 2 other parkruns we had just one runner too. In Porterstown, Kevin Flynn placed 52nd out of 91 runners, in a time of 27:26. Finally, Mairead Cashman took 81st spot overall (24th woman) in Bushy Dublin in a time of 29:08. Helena Walsh was well up there and also there was participation from Tony Owens and three members of the Fitzsimons family (John, Lorraine, Michael and Mary) on the 5K loop taking in the Ordnance Survey Road, Furry Glen and Furze Road at the northern end of the Phoenix Park. Conditions were a little windy and cold, but dry. The event was well-supported musically, especially by a gospel choir at the crossroads marking both 2 and 4 Km.
On Saturday morning John McAuley, Ollie McGrath and Brian McGuckin took part in the last IMRA race of the season, the so-called Powerscourt Ridge run which took in parts of Djouce and the Wicklow Way. The16k course was extremely challenging for the 174 runners who participated. Conditions were soggy underfoot, but there was also a 920m climb overall on difficult terrain onto a foggy summit. John was first Crusader home, in 17th place, in a time of 1:30:54, followed by Brian (32nd in 1:37:27) and then by Ollie (49th in 1:42:20). The race winner was Seamus Lynch from Newcastle in a time of 1:13:38. At the weekend, in Malta, Rebecca Fleming took part in the Zurrieq half marathon improving on her PB to 1:40:20, placing 99th overall in a field of 255 and 6th woman home. On holiday in Vancouver, Fiona Bane ran in the Fall Classic Half marathon, placing 269th overall (98th female finisher) in a field of nearly 650 runners and a time of 1:51:46. Leo Lundy also maintained his marathon exploits over the weekend. This marked his 100th marathon in 100 weeks and this last (the Inaugural Remembrance Marathon) was completed by Leo in just under 5 hours on the Thames towpath near Walton on Thames just outside London. Further afield, another inveterate marathoner, Leslie Lluyd Hughes, took on the Rock'n'Roll marathon and 5K events in Las Vegas, placing 762nd in a field of nearly 3,000 in the marathon with a time of 4:11:29 and 308th out of nearly 7,000 participants in the 5K in a time of 24:12. Moving as usual on to the parkruns, we had two first finishers from the club at the weekend. Dee Ni Chearbhaill was our only representative in Fairview and placed 9th overall out of nearly 70 runners and first woman home in 22:18. Fiona Bane had to go further afield for her success, running in British Columbia, the day before her half marathon. In a modest field in Richmond BC, Fiona placed 13th overall, first woman home in 24:54. Quite a few crusaders ran in Malahide and in Poolbeg. In Malahide, which was celebrating its 5th birthday, Brian Scanlan placed 33rd in a field of nearly 380 and a time of 20:46. Brian was followed by Diarmuid Byrne (119th in 24:25) and Darina Scully (120th overall, 21st woman finisher, in 24:27), all three veterans of the recent Dublin marathon, with Darina pacing the 25 minute finishers. The final member of the contingent was Paul Kelly who took 260th spot in 29:52, pacing the 30 minute finishers. Meanwhile just across the Liffey, we had 7 runners in Poolbeg among the field of 110. David Timoney led our runners home in 11th place (19:59). He was followed by Zalan Kovacs (26th in 22:06), then, in a line, recent Dublin marathoner Kate Murray (50th overall, 6th female, in 24:34), followed by Ali May Hannigan (52nd overall, 7th woman, in 24:35) and Sharon Woods (53rd overall, 8th woman, in 24:36). Gillian Errity took 102nd spot overall (34th female) in 33:24, almost immediately followed by Don Anderton (103rd in 33:41). Our next decent showing in terms of numbers was in St. Anne’s Raheny. For the second week in a row Matt Cranley ran with a pushchair (getting faster as each week goes by!), placing 69th in a field of nearly 390, with a time of 22:04. Matt was followed by Aoife Quinn (162nd overall, 25th female, in 25:50) and by Lorraine Fitzsimons (302nd overall, 106th female, in 29:45). All the remaining events had one runner each from the club. Ciaran Smyth placed 2nd in Clonakilty, with a time of 19:21 in a field exceeding 50 runners. Neil Brown placed 32nd out of 109 participants in Shanganagh with 23:28.Mairin Shine ran in the 113-strong field in Cabinteely, placing 94th overall, 36th female finisher, in 31:26, whilst Mairead Cashman came home in 141st place overall, 39th female, in Ballincollig. Mairead’s time was 29:32. Finally, Kevin Flynn placed 43rd out of nearly 100 participants in Porterstown, with a time of 27:24. Malahide Parkrun #262 Overall place Name Cat. Our teams did us proud and although our men weren't able to produce a team result because unfortunately a knee injury to Michael Kiely reduced the number of runners to 5 with 6 needed for a team score, the remaining runners acquitted themselves well. The real glory on the day goes, however, to our 9-strong women’s team, who managed to come home with team silver.
The two races took place on a breezy chilly day, but it’s fair to say the wind played only a limited role on the undulating, reasonably well-protected course. The ground was relatively hard and dry, so that the going was good. The women’s race of 32 runners involved 4 x 1500m loops to get to 6k on the familiar course and, on the first lap, our team clearly followed orders not to go out too hard. Indeed nearly all our runners were found at the back of the field for most of the first lap. This proved to be a significant advantage when it came to the later laps and our runners continued to pick off targets throughout the race, whilst one club in particular that was likely lying in a medal position at the time unfortunately lost a runner during the race possibly through having gone out too hard, depriving them of a competitive outcome. There was no doubt from before the start as to where the gold medal would go, with DSD packing its team with highly experienced elite runners, so the battle was always going to be for the minor places (and so it proved as DSD needed only 16 points to take the win). Nevertheless, with a result of 50 points, the four scorers of Caroline Crowley (10th) just coming back from injury, Adrienne Jordan (11th), Niamh Boland (13th) and Ilona McElroy (16th), secured 2nd place with distinction (ahead of Raheny on 72), but we had significant insurance from the remaining runners. Indeed, the next 4 finishers for the club had enough points to have taken 5th place, with Catherine Thornton (18th), running with the distraction of some barrier tape stuck to her spikes from the start, coming home only 6 seconds behind Ilona and Niamh Corby (19th) just 7 seconds further back, followed by Orla Kennedy (26th) and Lesley Ann Doughan (27th). In a quality field Dee Ni Chearbhaill (30th) also had an excellent race, picking off targets steadily and finishing strongly. It was clearly a great team effort as Adrienne and Niamh Boland pushed and pulled each other along for much of the race, as did Catherine and Niamh Corby and, likewise, Orla and Lesley Ann. It was fun to watch! The five remaining runners in the men’s tough 10k race (one short lap, followed by 6 normal loops) all ran well. Ciaran Diviney prepared himself appropriately for his upcoming international repeat by working his way through the 66-strong field to take 29th spot. Ciaran was followed by Rob Cross (38th) and John Mulvihill not too far behind (40th). Jason Kehoe was next in 45th place and our last runner across the line was Joe McDermott (59th) who had an excellent sprint finish to take another runner at the end. Before moving onto other results over the weekend, it is important to report on a couple of updates from last week’s results and both relate to the need to ensure that runners are declared appropriately for races. Karl Fahy crossed the line in last week’s Leinster Novices in 4th place behind race winner Ffion Buttner. It seems, however, that the DSD athlete had never been officially declared by his club and so his result has not stood. This means that Karl will now be entitled to an individual bronze in addition to his team and Dublin golds. Whilst he should be congratulated, it’s a bittersweet situation for Karl as individual medals at novice level have an impact on eligibility for future races (and Karl has suffered from this already!). The other update comes from the Dublin City marathon. The Cru M50 team of Pat Quill, James Cottle and Denis Murphy had thought they had been demoted to national bronze by virtue of coming in 2nd to a team from Rathfarnham in the Leinster and Dublin championships. It seems, however, that the rules are different between the separate championships, albeit within the same race. A team need not be declared for either Leinster or Dublin, but there was a deadline that Rathfarnham failed to observe for the nationals and meant that the club did not technically field a team. As a consequence, our team has been confirmed as national silver medal winners behind the Cork-based team of St. Finbarrs as well as us being, unusually, Leinster and Dublin silver medal winners, behind Rathfarnham. A lesson in planning! Back to the results. Joe Walsh and his wife Alma Hanevy of Donore headed to Galway for the weekend and took part in the Run for Mary 5K in aid of a local hospice in Peterswell. In a field of more than 260 runners, Alma won the women’s race, taking 6th place in 20:01, whilst Joe placed 4th in 18:54. Also on Saturday, fresh from his previous weekend’s run in the Dublin marathon (and one or two hard sessions since!), Brian O’Kelly joined in the Mo Run 10k (part of the Movember initiative) in the Phoenix Park, winning the race and finishing ahead of nearly 400 other contestants in a time of 35:00. There was another 10k on locally, this time in Clane. Neil Brown took part in that one, alongside more than 250 other runners, finishing in 32nd place with a PB time of 46:26. Kris Ryan and Leo Lundy continue to pile on the miles as they train for some bigger events later in the year. On Saturday they ran in the Balinasloe marathon organised by the Marathon Club of Ireland. In a modest field on a crisp but bright day around a rural bog road-based 10.5k loop, Kris had a solid 4:08 for 15th overall and first female home. Leo managed to take 8 minutes off his time in Dublin last week for 4:31 and 13th place. It looks also like Crusaders had a women's team in the Moonlight Challenge in Glendalough on Saturday evening. Kris, Kate Murray and Mairead Cashman were likely members of the team and results will be out shortly. We had 5 Crusaders running in the New York City Marathon. Conditions were somewhat strange. Warmish (11 to 16 degrees Celsius), with a headwind from the start, the race was relatively slow at the elite level regardless of the hilly second half which took its toll on many runners. The hills come from the many bridges in the race as well as Central Park towards the end. In the event, we had some good results. Federico Corradini pulled out another sub-3 finish, despite finding the second half tough, with a time of 2:57. Colm Kernan ran even splits to come home in 3:23. David Killion also found the going hard in the second half but was happy with his 3:40 and Gerald Hoare was not too far behind in 3:49. Joanna Langier, running with a strapped-up ankle after a recent fall, ran well to come in right on 4:00 and Bob Manson, in his second marathon in a week following Dublin, ran 4:22. Finally, we had a series of fine results in the parkruns on Saturday. Katie McElroy was a first female finisher in St. Anne’s (26th overall in 20:29) in a field of 416. Matt Cranley also ran, taking 108th in 23:50. Paul Flynn went head to head with Dave Carter in the hilly Cabinteely, with the former prevailing as first finisher in 19:02 and Dave coming second in 19:15. They were joined by nearly 130 other runners. Amy Brogan was another first finisher, in Porterstown. Amy placed 10th overall in a field of over 100 participants in a time of 21:19 and was followed by Kevin Flynn who ran 26:54 to place 48th. Our last first finisher, so to speak, was Fiona Shine who, with her sister Lisa, ran with nearly 300 other runners in Ballincollig in Cork. Fiona placed 7th overall in 20:16, whilst Lisa came home in 45th place, 5th female, in 22:59. We had solo runners in Malahide (with Mairin Shine who finished 227th in a field of 332, 72nd female, in 29:41), River Valley (with Darina Scully who probably walked for most of the 90-odd-strong event, finishing in 91st place overall, 37th female, in 50:31), Knocknacarra (with Fiona Bane who negotiated the tough and tricky course in 24:30, placing 30th overall out of nearly 100 runners, 6th female finisher), Bushy Dublin (with Mairead Cashman, who came home in 76th place overall out of a field of 112 and 26th female, in 29:17 and Tymon (with Sharon Woods, who placed 98th overall out of 153, 35th female, in 30:15). Lastly, in our “home” parkrun in Poolbeg, we had 8 participants. In a field of 186 runners, our contingent was led home by Tony Owens (10th in 19:52) and he was followed by David Timoney (13th in 20:14), Russell Murphy (36th in 22:36), Olwyn Dunne (42nd overall, 4th female, in 23:22), Aisling O’Connor (82nd overall, 14th female, in 25:46), Aoife Quinn (96th overall, 22nd female, in 26:37), Emma O’Mahony (112th overall, 33rd female, in 27:59) and by Mark Browne (185th in 42:41).
