The week long Christmas and New Year break gave loads of our members the opportunity to race. Perhaps, it was seen as an excellent opportunity to get out of the house, escape all the tension of Christmas dinner preparations, or just to build up an appetite for the inevitable over-eating. Whatever, but the opportunities seemed endless and several runners made full use of them. It is perhaps not surprising also how popular the parkruns were, given that several of them found volunteers to marshall on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, a tradition likely started in the UK but now it seems available in certain parts of Ireland too. They were extremely popular during this period and we even saw the likes of Mick Clohisey and Lizzie Lee turning out to run in one. We were definitely helped by the dry and mild conditions that encouraged us out into the fresh air. The first race of note was the Fields of Athenry held on St. Stephens Day. It’s an event in its 17th year and Crusaders have a good history of participation and success, particularly in the women’s race. Taking a route around the town from the railway station and finishing under its mediaeval arch, conditions for the race this year were cool and crisp, even enjoying a brief appearance of the sun. We had 6 runners in the field of nearly 1200. Brian O’Kelly finished in a PB time of 31:55 on an impressive podium behind Mick Clohisey and Hugh Armstrong. Catherine Thornton was our second Crusader home, running 41:11 to take 111th spot overall 7th female finisher, just ahead of Irene Gorman (135th overall, 10th woman) in 41:59 and Aine Kenny (142nd overall, 12th female finisher) in 42:14. The contingent was completed by Diarmuid Fahey (166th in 43:05) and Brendan Glynn (268th in 46:05). As this is the last race report of the year, the opportunity to comment on what has been a huge development for runners this year should not be missed. Both Mick and Brian, along with many other racers, have bought into the shoe technology that helped Eliud Kipchoge break the marathon world record in Berlin in September (it now stands at 2:01:39, a full 78s having been clipped off the previous record). The Nike shoes stand out a mile with their orange mesh uppers and Mick wore his for the first time in Athenry (see main photo), coming home in a sub-30 minutes time and a new course record. Anyone who owns a pair of these shoes will testify that the feel is like no other shoe that they have run in. It will be interesting to see if other manufacturers try to replicate the technology and also whether the hefty price for them will come down! The shoes were also in evidence on the same day in Wicklow, at the Inbhear Dee AC Streets of Wicklow 5k. In the field exceeding 400 runners, we had 3 runners finishing behind Hiko Tonosa (14:53) and teenage sensation Emma O’Brian (who ran well recently in the European Cross-country championships in Holland) (16:56) who was just ahead of Linda Byrne (17:03). Kieran Little, another fan of the Nike shoes, ran 15:57 for 5th place, a day before taking on the Marathon Club of Ireland-organised Portumna marathon which he won in a time of 2:58. Ollie McGrath also ran in the 5k (with its uphill start), placing 51st in 18:38. Another race on this day was the Belgooly 4 mile road race down in Co. Cork. In a field that exceeded 500 runners, Shane Collins placed 9th in a time of 22:00, followed home by Robert Browne (42nd in 24:57) and Tim O’Donnell (66th in 26:41). Rachael Yorke reported that she ran in the Shane Brennan 5k in Longford on Stephen's Day along with Daniel Lowe. Rachael acquitted herself well, placing 3rd behind Catherina McKiernan (33rd overall), as did Daniel who placed 13th in a field of nearly 400. Daniel ran 17:36, whilst Rachael ran 20:08. During this period Barry O’Neill reported that he ran in the Glenbower 5k turkey trot, finishing in 25:44, whilst we had several participants in the hilly and slightly treacherous Howth Fat Turkey 10k. The race attracted a field of nearly 500 and we had at least 7 runners take part. They were led home by Dee Lawlor who placed 13th and 3rd M40 in 37:51, with Luke Davis next in 21st in a time of 39:25. Matt Cranley took 66th spot in 44:23, followed home by Simon Kenny (123rd in 47:25) and David Timoney (133rd in 47:59). Next came Olwyn Dunne (158th overall, 5th F50) in 47:59 with Paul Kelly completing the contingent (456th in 68:50). Olwyn went on to run in the East of Ireland Howth marathon 2 days later, finishing in a time of 3:57 and having traversed the hill 4 times during the race. Phelim Murray and Sarah Lyons took advantage of a Christmas visit to Sarah’s home town to run in the Aylesbury Boxing Day 5k. In a field of 221, Phelim placed 56th in 21:53 and Sarah came home in 72nd overall, 9th female finisher, in 22:46. Eddie Nugent also ran on Stephen’s Day in Co. Tipperary in an event he has run before, the Clonmel AC-organised MSD 4 mile race. Again, in a race with a large field exceeding 500, and unsurprisingly won by Brian Maher and Siobhan O’Doherty, Eddie, who placed 45th in 24:02, was joined by 2 runners who train with the club. Declan Ryan came home in 34th in 23:30, whilst Lorraine Healy finished in 109th place overall, 11 female finisher, in 26:32. On Sunday 30 December, the annual running of the Clonliffe ERP Christmas cracker 5k took place. This is a race largely run on roads around the outside of Santry Demesne but starts and finishes on the track in Morton Stadium. We had some super results among the 184 finishers. Cormac McGuire placed 51st in 20:07, followed by Paul Kelly who ran out of his skin to record a PB time of 20:35 and 54th place. Next came Aoife Kelly who finished strongly to place 77th overall (21st woman) in 22:25 and Aoife was followed immediately by Dee Ni Chearbhaill who is racing herself back to fitness (78th overall, 22nd woman, in 22:33) and then by Geraldine Clements not too far behind (82nd overall, 24th woman, in 22:57). On New Year's Day, several of us decided to forego the Tuesday session and run in the races on offer. Catherine Thornton was our lone representative in the Galway Resolution Run, a top-quality 5k race with a field of 344 finishers. Catherine ran 19:42 to place 47th overall and 5th woman finisher in a race where the 2nd place overall went to a female junior who ran 16:01. There was a reasonable Cru turnout for the Liffey Valley-organised Tom Brennan 5k in the Phoenix Park on a drizzly but not too windy morning. This is a fast 5km that takes place on a 2 lap clockwise course involving the Furze and Ordnance Survey Roads and Chesterfield Avenue. Unfortunately, it measured slightly long this year (by about 60m), but still was an excellent race (and the drizzle receded during the race) with a quality field of 685 runners, including many from the Lord Mayor's 5 Alive initiative. The Nike shoes were in evidence for two of the first three Crusaders home, Brian O'Kelly who placed 5th behind Sunday's Christmas Cracker winner in a time close to his PB of 15:19, and James Cottle who ran 19:26 in even splits, reeling in runners throughout the race, to place 69th and 4th M50 (unfortunately there was no M60 age category). The pair were split by Enda Currid who had an excellent run to finish in 63rd place and 5th M45 in 19:02. Rachael Yorke was next in 20:22 (99th overall and 19th woman) having had to stop briefly because she was suffering from a heavy cold after a fast start, and would probably have broken 20 minutes without it. Rachael was followed by TJ Bourke guiding Donnacha McCarthy around the course (100th in 20:21) and they were followed by Brendan Glynn who ran 20:55 for his 115th place. Dee Ni Chearbhaill, another runner to take on two 5k races in a short period of time, ran nearly a minute faster than her time in the Christmas Cracker two days earlier when she ran 21:39 to place 133rd overall, 32nd woman finisher. Our final runner was Stephen Price who ran 30:23 to place 398th. Declan Ryan of Thurles also ran in the race and was happy to take 42nd in 17:33 on a course that he found easier to negotiate than the MSD race he ran on Stephen's Day. In that race, the visually-impaired runner came to a juddering halt towards the end as the marshalls didn't realise that he needed to be guided towards the finish which deviated off the course. As usual, we had great support around the course. As mentioned above, we had a lot of runners in the parkruns during this period, including those held on Christmas and New Year’s Days if you could find them. The results of those that took place in Ireland are listed below and there were a few podium outcomes. On 22 December Fiona Shine placed 2nd (49th overall) in St. Anne’s in a time of 21:26, whilst Catherine Thornton was first finisher (7th overall) in Knocknacarra in 20:59. Jason Kehoe, likewise placed 2nd in Tymon in 17:24, whilst Kris Ryan placed 2nd (12th overall) in 28:30, in the 43-strong field in Surfers Paradise in Australia. Serena Moloney was first finisher (15th overall) in a time of 23:32 in Templemore, whilst Aoife Kelly took 3rd place (28th overall) in 23:59 in Corkagh. Stephen Hurley was first finisher in Poolbeg in 16:56, whilst Sharon Woods placed 4th (44th overall), in 24:28 in the same event. Brian Scanlan also took 4th in 21:47 in River Valley, whilst Mari Hansen placed 4th (22nd overall) in 28:45 in Toyen in Norway. Dairmuid Byrne came home in 2nd place in Tolka Valley in 20:28 and there were excellent results for Gillian Lyons (6th woman, 22nd overall) in Clonakilty (26:31), Luke Davis (8th in 18:36) in Marlay, Peter O’Toole (6th in 18:25) in St. Anne’s, Pierce Currid (7th in 19:51), Mary Dolan (52nd overall, 8th woman, in 25:03), Gillian Curran (57th overall, 11th woman, in 25:26) and Cliodhna O’Reilly (64th overall, 15th woman, in 25;52) in Poolbeg and Eddie Nugent (5th in 19:31) and Dave Carter (7th in 19:56) in Cabinteely. On the same day, Sarah Lyons and Phelim Murray ran in Aylesbury, placing respectively 37th (6th woman) and 31st in 22:49 and 22:12 in a field of 187 runners. Then on Christmas day we had 3 runners in the Finsbury parkrun in North London. In a field of 326 runners and on a course that was quite hilly in places, James Cottle took 28th spot in 20:48, followed by our London exile Simon Everard who likely ran about 22:45 for 62nd place and Roland Cottle who came home in 28:19 for 194th place. Waterstown and Ballincollig were also two of the Irish venues that also had a Christmas Day run perhaps for the first time. Aoife and Paul Kelly ran with Geraldine Clements in Waterstown, with Geraldine placing 90th overall (11th woman) in 24:33, followed by Aoife (167th overall, 32nd woman) in 27:47 and Paul (168th in 27:56), whilst Mairead Cashman ran in Ballincollig in Cork, taking 159th place overall, 28th woman, in 28:14. Then on the last Saturday of the year, we had a large number participating in the parkruns. Dave Carter ran 19:41 to come home as first finisher in Navan, whilst Sarah Lyons, back home now, was first finisher (21st overall) in Poolbeg in 22:45. John Thuillier placed 3rd in 19:37 in the same event. Maria Kennedy found herself on the podium in 3rd place (29th overall) in 23:59 in Kilkenny, whilst Amy Brogan took 4th spot (27th overall) in 23:34 in Castletown. Other good results came from Aidan Hudner who ran in Clarisford Park, Killaloe, Co. Clare (9th in 23:06), whilst Aoife Kelly recorded the same time as huband Paul in placing 13th overall, 4th woman, in 28:04 in Tyrrelstown. Kris Ryan ran in a field of 279 in Paradise Point in Australia to place 54th overall, 14th female, in 23:18, whilst Gillian Lyons ran in Ballincollig, coming home in 99th place overall, 12th woman, in 25:18. Mairead Cashman took 56th place overall, 8th woman in27:45 in Bushy Park, whilst Cormac McGuire ran 23:52 to take 7th spot in Tolka Valley. There were even a few parkruns on New Year's Day and we caught two of them, in Poolbeg and Cabinteely, their numbers swelled well above normal. Kieran Little decided to test out a niggly hamstring in Poolbeg and duly came home in a first finishing time of 17:10. He was joined by Tim O'Donnell (18th in 20:19) and by Fiona Bane who may well have recorded a PB with her time of 22:24 to place 2nd (40th overall). Olwyn Dunne, Gillian Curran, Sharon Woods and Paul Kelly also ran, and some of them, namely Fiona, Gillian, Olwyn and Paul went on to run in Cabinteely. They were joined there by Eddie Nugent who took 4th place in 19:23 and by Mari Hansen and Mairead Cashman. Fiona distinguished herself, placing 6th (64th overall) in 24:07. Everyone had been in trepidation of what they were told to expect, what with a code orange weather warning across the country, particularly in the east, but in the event the conditions were surprisingly not so bad, certainly not as bad as earlier in the day. It was a chilly, windy day alright, but the heavy showers really only affected the spectators and not the runners who remained totally focused on the task in hand. Indeed, for the women’s race the rain held off and was only really noticeable towards the end of the men’s race. The course, too, although slippery in parts and producing some spectacular falls, particularly on some of the tighter turns, did not seem to suffer overly even for the men in the last race of 12 held on the day. We witnessed huge fields for both the men’s (254) and women’s (151) races and the depth of quality was perhaps surprising, but then again there was a strong presence from all over the country of clubs we don’t often have to run against, although we probably fielded the largest teams in both events. As usual, the women ran in the penultimate race of the day on the same tough 2k loop (on a golf course) that had been used for the Leinster novices, with an uphill start turning clockwise at the top, descending for a few hundred meters with a couple of bends onto the flat, then coming back in a series of tight undulating turns to an uphill finish. The race involved two laps to make it 4k. Our leading runner of the 18 women from the club who braved the elements on the day (12% of the field) was Niamh Allen who tucked in towards the front of a fairly large leading group but was careful not to make herself a target during the first lap. By the time, however, the second lap started the group had broken apart and Niamh found herself alongside two other runners heading for home, in theory well ahead of the following athletes, the lead changing frequently. Then, surprisingly, with about 800m to go, there seemed to be 4 athletes vying for the three podium spots. The general consensus at the time was that the 4th girl had caught the leading three, but as it turned out, although she looked to come home in 2nd place and deny a medal for Niamh, who appeared to have crossed the line in 4th, having witnessed a breakaway in the last 250m, in fact the newcomer had not run the full race and was in any event apparently ineligible. So, Niamh’s hard efforts were rewarded after all and she received a well-deserved bronze, her first individual medal running with the club. Further down the field there was some good bunching by her fellow team members with Kiera Roche (42nd), Niamh Corby (46th) and Katie Rogers (55th) only 13 runners apart and the leading scorers for the club could take comfort from a 4th team place among the 19 that were contesting the team competition. Everyone worked hard in the race, for one or two a baptism of fire. Rachael Yorke came home in 62nd place followed by Grainne Regan (73rd) who also had an excellent outing. Fiona Shine (99th) finished just ahead of Isabelle Cairns (102nd) and Kathryn Sweeney (109th). Further back came Maria Kennedy (117th), followed by a slightly-under-the-weather Sarah Lyons (129th), Emer Kenny (133rd) just ahead of Kate Murray in her second event of the day having run a parkrun in the morning (134th) and then came Louise Vanwildersmeersch (140th), Maria del Carmen Jimenez Campos (143rd) in her first cross country race, Anna Shine (146th ) alongside sister Lisa Shine (147th) and completed by Mairead Cashman (151st) who had also run in the same parkrun as Kate in the morning. Members will be interested to hear that Lorraine Healy of Moyne AC, who trains with us, placed 86th. The men’s race had a substantial field and we contributed 23 runners, nearly 10%. As with the women, the quality of the race was there for everyone to see and despite our large numbers and some excellent individual efforts we missed out on a team podium result, taking 6th place, behind a Rathfarnham team that might have expected to be up there too with 2 runners in the top 11 places. It was interesting to see that the lead scorer for the winning team (Togher) was only 13th. So the men had to run 3 laps of the same course in worsening conditions. Michael Kiely was first home in 21st place having come past our long-time leader Kieran Little (28th) towards the end, Kieran falling on one of the last corners, his second fall of the day, but getting up remarkably fast all the same. Brendan Murphy was our 3rd scorer, having worked his way through the field to come home in 56th just ahead of Michael O’Conor (57th) who also finished strongly. Next across the line was Fearghal O’Hare in 63rd place, wearing a shoe that had been ripped along its length by someone else’s spikes in the melee of the first lap. Shane Collins made a special trip from Cork to run in the race and was rewarded with 70th place, followed by Ciaran Diviney (78th), Frank Halligan (89th) and John Mulvihill (106th). Peter O’Toole followed John home in 113th with Jason Kehoe not too far behind in 118th and Diarmuid O’Foghlu in 120th. Joe McDermott, suffering from a slight chest infection, was next in 158th, followed by Vinnie McGuinness (161st), Daan Van Schie (168th), Will Owens (176th), Daniel Lowe (190th), Eddie Nugent (211th), Garret Dunne (216th), Gary Park (234th), Phelim Murray (244th) and Brendan Glynn (249th). Leo Lundy was out again, running in a wet and wild dawn to dusk ultra (50k) on a challenging 1.125 mile urban loop in North East London on Sunday. Members will be interested to hear that on Sunday Sean Murphy of United Striders, who trains with the club, placed 10th in the nearly 700-strong field of the Drogheda and District AC-organised Beko 5k. Sean’s time of 17:40 was good enough to get him 3rd M40. Parkrun attendance was largely down on Saturday, with times slower because of the tough conditions. In addition, all the parks run by Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown council were closed so that parkruns there had to be cancelled. As usual, we had some notable results. In Poolbeg, Stephen Hurley once again placed first finisher in a time of 18:21, whilst Ellen Caulfield placed 12th overall, 3rd woman home, in 23:36 in Porterstown, Brian Scanlan was 2nd in River Valley in a time of 22:03 and newcomer Tom Conlon was first finisher in a modest field in Sligo in a time of 20:32. In Porterstown, Stephen was followed home by Tim O’Donnell (11th in 20:39), Fiona Bane (31st overall, 4th female finisher, in 24:17), Sharon Woods (48th overall, 8th woman, in 25:47), Olwyn Dunne (48th overall, 11th woman, in 26:05), Cliodhna O’Reilly (52nd overall, 14th woman, in 26:49), Gillian Curran (53rd overall, 15th woman, in 26:55), Mary Noelle Rohan (63rd overall, 20th woman, in 28:52) and Ciara McElligott (80th overall, 26th woman, in 34:43). In River Valley, Brian was accompanied by Darina Scully who placed 25th overall, 10th female, in 31:24. As mentioned above, Kate Murray and Mairead Cashman ran in Bushy Park on Saturday morning, placing 66th and 75th respectively overall, 16th and 22nd female finishers, in respective times of 28:12 and 28:58. Ronan Moynihan was our only representative in Malahide, placing 26th in 22:34, whilst Colm Foley placed 30th in Griffeen in 23:29. Cormac McGuire came home in 6th spot in Tolka Valley in a time of 21:53, whilst Maria Pertl placed 48th overall, 8th woman, in 29:59 in Tymon, accompanied by her partner, Diarmuid Byrne, who took 49th spot 30:00. Paul and Aoife Kelly ran close together in St. Anne’s, with Paul taking 48th place in 24:2 and his wife coming home in 61st overall right behind in a time 24:03 and 6th woman finisher. Finally, Kris Ryan would have seen quite different conditions in Paradise Point in Australia to place 26th overall, 2nd woman home, in 23:01, in a field of 168. Front row: Rachael Yorke, Katie Rogers, Anna Shine, Lisa Shine, Emer Kenny, Sarah Lyons and Louise Vanwildermeersch A little bit quieter this week in terms of races and participation, but not so calm on the weather front as anyone running over the weekend can testify. We’ve been blessed with a year of little in the way of wind but it seems to be coming back with a vengeance and providing us with conditions with which we used to be all too familiar. We start with the Aware 5 and 10k races that took place on Saturday morning in the Phoenix Park. Both races attracted big fields and both were run on the same 5k loop that took in Chesterfield Avenue, the Ordnance Survey Road, Upper Glen Road and Furze Road at the top of the park. A bit hilly in places, particularly down in the Furry Glen by the pond and, therefore, even without the cold and windy conditions, probably not regarded as a PB course. So it was somewhat surprising that some may have achieved PBs on the day. We had one runner in the 572-strong 5k race. Karl Gohery managed a top-50 finish with a time of 22:45 and 32nd place, whilst in the 10k, which saw a dead heat finish between Brian Maher and Sean Hehir at the sharp end of the race, we had 4 runners among the more than 860 who turned out for the event. James Cahill was first across the line for the club, placing 14th in 38:39, whilst Luke Davis also managed to place in the top 20 with a run of 39:20 to take 18th. Next came Barry McGuirk another in the top 50, placing 47th in 41:20. Carina Davidson also ran, taking 256th place overall, 58th female finisher, in a time of 50:44. Mention should also be made of Lydia Bigley of Dublin Front Runners who trains with the club. Lydia broke 48 minutes for the first time (clearly showing her training is paying off!) placing 134th overall, 18th female finisher, in a PB time of 47:45. On the same day we had a couple of athletes participating in two of the events in Clonakilty. This was the 9th year of the Clonakilty Waterfront marathon and Bob Cahill ran in the marathon itself, whilst Padraig Sheehan took on the 10K. Bob is just coming back from injury so he will have been delighted with his 3:29:13 and 41st place finish in a field of 373 runners, whilst Padraig came home in a splendid 4th place in the 10k in a time of 37:00 ahead of nearly 660 other runners. Further afield, on Sunday our Texan exiles, Yvonne Macauley and Alan Sheehy, ran in the Dallas Half marathon, which apparently measured a little long. Both ran well, with Yvonne placing 73rd overall, 11th female finisher, in a time of 1:26:10 despite finding the going tough and Alan placing 255th in 1:35:39. Finally, Bob Lyne represented the club in the National Roadwalking Championships on Saturday morning, held in Raheny. Bob walked a creditable 31:25 for the 5k to finish 3rd in his age category and nearly half a minute faster than in the same race last year. As usual, the last part of the report is dedicated to those running in the parkruns. On the face of it attendance seemed a little lower this week than of late, probably because of the weather on Saturday morning. Times may also have been slightly slower too. Podium results went to Sarah Lyons and Olwyn Dunne in Fairview, Stephen Hurley in Poolbeg, Katie Rogers in Tralee, Lisa Shine in Vandeleur, Dave Carter in Cabinteely and Kris Ryan in Paradise Point in Australia. In Fairview, Sarah placed 14th overall, 1st female finisher in a time of 23:29. Sarah was preceded by Phelim Murray (12th in 22:51) and followed by Olwyn in yet another parkrun for her (21st overall, 3rd female, in 25:24). Katie was our only participant in Tralee, but she placed 13th overall, 1st female finisher, in 21:16, whilst Stephen led home a large contingent from the club in Poolbeg. He came home in first place in 17:06, followed by Dave Tilly (10th in 20:26), Russell Murphy (26th in 22:36), Fiona Bane (28th overall, 4th woman, in 22:39), Derek Ryan (30th in 22:59), Sharon Woods (41st overall, 9th woman, in 24:13), Cliodhna O’Reilly (57th overall, 18th woman, in 25:34), Aisling O’Riordan (65th overall, 23rd woman, in 27:49) and Mari Hansen (77th overall, 29th woman, in 30:01). Lisa ran in Vandeleur Park in Kilrush Co. Clare, placing 7th overall, 2nd woman home, in 25:34, whilst Dave Carter was also 2nd in Cabinteely in a time of 20:48. He was followed by Emma O’Mahony (43rd overall, 10th woman, in 26:19) and Mairead Cashman (68th overall, 21st woman, in 29:55). Kate Murray placed 32nd overall, 4th woman home, in 23:05 in Bushy park, whilst Colm Foley took 25th place in 22:05 in Griffeen. Leo Lundy ran 29:15 in Knocknacarra, the ultra-runner taking 47th place, whilst Lorraine Fitzsimons placed 306th overall, 81st female finisher, in 31:21 in St. Anne’s. Hat off to Darina Scully who continues to put in good times during her pregnancy, placing 42nd overall, 12th female, in 27:06 in Poppintree. Outside the country, Kris Ryan took 32nd place overall, 3rd female finisher, in Paradise Point in 22:52 running alongside 184 other participants, whilst Aidan Hudner ran again in Victoria Park in Glasgow. In a field of 244 runners, he placed 72nd in 23:49. Clonakilty Waterfront marathon (373) Overall place Name Cat. Two weekends ago we had two runners, stars of the gold-medal winning team of the women’s Dublin seniors, competing in the National Senior XC on the purpose-built course at the National Sports Campus in Abbottstown. In an extremely competitive field of more than 100 female athletes, Niamh Allen and Anna Reddin ran steadily and strongly to take 23rd and 30th places, in respectively 29:39 and 30:19, behind race winner Ciara Mageean (28:01) over 8k. The same day saw the start of the 4-race series of the International Running Challenge, involving back-to-back races contested between clubs from Ireland, the UK, Germany, Denmark and Holland on different surfaces and over different lengths and topography over 4 days. Nearly 40 Crusaders made the trip this year to Club La Santa on the island of Lanzarote, not all to run in the Challenge, but all enjoyed the fantastic weather where the sun shone every day, the wind was mercifully just a gentle breeze and where racing temperatures reached 22 degrees. What more could one ask for at the end of November! The day before the first race, a theoretical 10k run on road, but starting and finishing on the track, we were inspired by the sight of the Belgian 4x400 relay team being put through their paces whilst doing some warm weather training on the track. What was really surprising for those of us watching is that there is a 4th Borlee brother being groomed for stardom (18 years old) in addition to the 3 that have already medalled for their country at international level and it is the goal of their father who is also their coach to have the entire team made up from the same family in the upcoming Tokyo Olympics. It will be amazing if his sons achieve that ambition for him. Anyway, back to the Challenge. It needs to be noted that all the distances are approximate and each year a race can measure either too long or too short so any 10k or 5k PBs achieved there can be questioned. We had 12 men and 7 women in the first race, and although we all ran together our results were recorded separately by gender so that, in the women’s race of 153 runners, Orla Drumm came 2nd behind a Spanish woman who only ran in the one race. Orla would not be beaten again in any of the remaining races. Catherine Thornton took 11th, followed by Irene Gorman, just back from injury, in 17th, Grainne Regan, 25th, Emer Kenny 26th just behind, Dee Ni Chearbhaill in 40th and Olwyn Dunne, 44th. Lydia Bigley of the Front Runners who trains with us also ran, placing 55th. The women were beginning to show strong positions in their age categories as well as in the team event. In the men’s side of the race, Ger Forde came home in 10th out of a field of 217, followed by Joe McDermott (17th), Dominick Branigan (23rd), Joe Walsh (29th), Mick Smyth (30th) who was treated for dehydration at the finish, Will Owens (41st), Enda Currid (46th), James Cottle (51st), Eddie Nugent (54th), Tim O’Donnell (84th), Philip Matthews (92nd) and Brendan Glynn (141st). The 3 men’s teams were not as well placed as the women who were lying first, but were holding their own mid-table ,with 4th place being our best position. Declan Ryan, a visually impaired athlete from Thurles who trains with us, also ran in this race, taking 47th place. The following day saw us all out again early running on a course known as the 13k ridge run, involving a steep trek over a mix of road and trail from sea level to the top of an extinct volcano and then down again in a wide loop on sandy and earthy trails to a track finish inside the CLS stadium. That race still had sizeable fields of 198 men and 153 women. The women’s team continued to consolidate a strong lead led home by Orla in 1st place and Orla was followed by strong runs from Catherine (6th) and Irene (13th), together with Grainne (25th) and Olwyn (50th) who had a nasty fall on the volcanic trail just before entering the stadium at the finish. Lorraine Healy from Tipperary who trains with us took 27th place and Lydia ran as well (62nd). We had 10 men in the race, headed again by Ger (8th) and followed by Joe McDermott (21st), Joe Walsh (23rd), Will (29th), Dominick (30th), Enda (39th), James (48th), Mick feeling the effects of his possible heatstroke of the day before (65th), Tim (87th) and Philip (106th). Again, the men’s teams were not doing too badly in mid table (5th, 8th and 13th). The third race involved being bussed to Playa del Carmen in the south of the island, a trip of some 30 minutes or so. Every year the conditions for the 5k beach race seem to change. We had some decent hard sand in places, but the start of the race was extremely soft going (think of the consistency of dunes!), along with similar conditions at the far end of the 2.5k loop. Some runners just don’t fare well on such surfaces, whilst those of us with short strides and high cadence perhaps seem to thrive. It was also a bit windier at the seaside than in the north at CLS. Again, Orla demonstrated her dominance (this on perhaps 3 hours of sleep after a long warm up on the dance floor the night before!) by winning the race. Catherine took 7th, Irene, 14th, Grainne 22nd and Olwyn 69th, feeling the effects of her bloodied fall of the day before. Once again Ger was our first man home (12th) followed by Joe McDermott (26th), Joe Walsh (28th), Will (35th), Enda (40th), James (44th), Mick (47Th), Eddie (50th), Tim (83rd) and Philip (109th). Dominick had unfortunately to sit out this race as he was experiencing flu-like symptoms, which thankfully didn't last. The largest field of the week (nearly 330 combined: 192 men and 134 women) appeared for the 4th race, the so called half marathon which is really 20k on a point to point course (having been bussed to the start). Several of us had a lot at stake going into this race, where the times of each of the races are aggregated and the lowest accumulated time in each age category takes the prize in a winner takes all situation: nothing for 2nd or 3rd places, just bragging rights. So after 3 races, Orla was leading the women’s field by about 2 mins, Irene was leading her age category by 3 mins; Catherine was also ahead in her age category by just over 1 minute, whilst Ger was lying in 4th place, 5 minutes behind the leader of his category. James was lying joint first in his age category on an identical accumulated time with a Danish runner, having surprisingly recovered an exact deficit of 25 seconds on him in the beach race. As everyone in the Challenge knows, a deficit of 1-3 minutes can easily be overcome and so the last race is critical. We ran the race, which was held on a mixture of muddy trail and road in extremely warm conditions again and yet again Orla demonstrated her experience and skill in holding off her competitors to win the women’s race. Catherine (9th) and Irene (13th) did likewise and duly won their age categories by finishing ahead of their competition. The women’s dominance of the race led to them winning the team title again. Ger’s 9th place in the men’s race kept him in 4th place but with the narrowest of margins behind 3rd place, whilst James got tired of hanging onto his competitor after 3km and decided to try and put distance between himself and the Dane. If the race had been 14k the tactic might have worked. Unfortunately, James was inevitably caught and eventually finished up about 3 minutes behind the age category winner in 2nd place overall. It was a good lesson in race tactics! For the record Grainne finished 24th in the race, followed by Olwyn in 54th place and Lydia in 58th. Rob Cross finished behind Ger in 15th place, followed by Joe McDermott in 20th, Joe Walsh (24th), Dominick (34th), Enda (35th ), Will (43rd), Mick (55th), James (56th), Eddie (61st), Tim (100th) and Philip (115th). It was a great experience as usual and a super confidence boost for those who did not appreciate they might have such endurance to master 4 consecutive days of tough racing in warm conditions. The day following the return of most of the participants coincided with the Donore-organised Jingle Bells 5k in the Phoenix Park. The race is essentially a marginally net downhill and so is famous for producing PBs. More importantly, for those at the front, it can also serve as a qualifying race for the Armagh International 5k where in order to be eligible a male runner needs to demonstrate that he has run the distance under 16 minutes. Indeed anyone finishing the race over 15 minutes is likely to be close to the back of the field in Armagh. One of those seeking a qualifying time was Kieran Little who led our 50 or so participants home on the day from the starting point on Acres Road, up Chesterfield Avenue to the roundabout before Castleknock Gate and then down the Ordnance Survey Road and the Upper Glen to the finish just below the hospital near the Chapelizod Gate. Kieran’s 14th place in a field of nearly 1200 and his PB time of 15:29 will have been enough to secure him a place in Armagh, as will those of Brian O’Kelly (back from injury and placing 15th in an identical time and finishing 2nd M35), Michael Kiely (22nd in 15:42) and Fearghal O’Hare (27th in 15:53). There were too many of our runners in the race to cover everyone, their results are outlined below, but a few should be mentioned. We had 15 male runners in the top 100, including Italo Giancaterina (36th in 16:06), Ciaran Diviney (37th and 1st M45 in 16:07), Frank Halligan (46th in 16:21), Stephen Hurley (54th in 16:27), Vinnie Mcguinness (55th in 16:31), Rob Cross (60th and 2nd M45 in 16:36), Adam Flanagan (70th in 16:48), Tony Carter (77th in 16:54), Stephen O’Kennedy (84th in 17:08) and Jason Kehoe (96th in 16:54). Special mention should be made of David Long who placed 186th and 8th M55 in 18:54, whilst Michael Maughan’s 252nd place in 19:30 hides the fact that several runners were unaware the race had started and had to play catch up. Tim O’Donnell ran his 5th race of the week in placing 257th in a time of 20:01. The Cru women did well too. Jane Wallace was first home in 208th place overall (28th woman) in a super PB time of 19:02. Katie McElroy also recorded a PB in placing 253rd overall, 40th woman, in 19:44, breaking 20 minutes for the first time. Other top 100 or so places included, Serena Moloney (304th overall, 54th woman, in 20:31), Ruth Dwyer (338th overall, 64th woman, in 21:17), Kate Murray (372nd overall, 77th woman, 5th F50, in 21:36), Sarah Lyons (376th overall, 79th woman, in 21:120, Maria Kennedy (406th overall, 94th woman, in 21:54) and Maeve Muldowney (425th overall, 101st woman, in 22:14). Also on Saturday morning, Brendan Murphy ran in the Waterford Half marathon, placing 8th in a field of nearly 2,350 and a great time of 1:12:21, and we should not forget to mention that Pat Quill ran the week before in the Seattle marathon, finishing in 3:28 on a hilly course. That takes us to Sunday afternoon and the running of the Dublin Intermediates XC in Tymon Park on a course designed and hosted by Rathfarnham. Among intermittent rain showers there were two races of interest to Crusaders. In the women’s 60-strong 5k race we fielded a team of 8 runners, with at least 3 newcomers to the club and indeed to cross-country. The race involved one lap of 1km, followed by 2 laps of 2km on an undulating course. One of the newcomers, Katie Rogers, recorded a top 10 finish, placing an excellent 10th, followed by Rachael Yorke (16th), Isabelle Cairns, another new recruit (34th), Kathryn Sweeney (38th), Fiona Shine (40th), Kate Murray (44th), Dorothy Maguire, likewise new to the club (46th) and Mairead Cashman (60th). The team earned a creditable 4th place out of the 8 clubs represented. In the men’s 4-lap 8k race, we fielded the barest minimum to have a team of 4 runners, so that they all scored. Shane Collins made a welcome temporary return from self-imposed exile in Cork to lead the men’s team home into 7th place with a 12th place individual finish in a field of 93. Peter O’Toole was next in 13th, followed by the stalwart Joe McDermott (27th) and Kevin D’Arcy (68th). Finally, we have two weeks of parkrun results recorded below. Highlights are as follows. Two weekends ago we had an impressive podium result in Poolbeg with Stephen Hurley placing 1st in 17:12 followed by Dee Lawlor in 2nd on 17:45. Meanwhile, Katie Rogers placed first woman finisher (25th overall) in 21:12. Ali May Hann was 3rd woman (17th overall) in 25:14 in Monaghan Town, whilst Sarah Lyons placed 2nd (14th overall) in a time of 21:59 in Poppintree, with Phelim Murray in 5th in 20:03. In Marlay, John McAuley was back from injury running 18:22 for a 5th placed finish too, whilst Diarmuid Byrne ran in Dungloe, taking 2nd place in 20:11. Then this past weekend, John ran marginally slower (18:27) to record a 4th place finish in Marlay, whilst Padraig Sheehan did likewise in St. Anne’s in a time of 17:58. Ali May also maintained an excellent record by taking 2nd place (23rd overall) in a time of 24:19 in Oldbridge. Diarmuid was another to repeat success by placing 3rd in Poppintree in 19:12, whilst Fiona Bane took 2nd (28th overall) in 22:54 in Poolbeg. Lastly, Lisa Shine took 2nd place (26th overall) in 26:01 in Glen River. Two results not recorded below were those of Kris Ryan in Australia and Aidan Hudner in Scotland. Kris ran with 169 other participants in Paradise Point, placing 3rd (27th overall) in 23:13, whilst Aidan ran 22.38 in Glasgow alongside 314 runners to place 77th.
