On yet another blustery weekend, with continuing parkrun cancellations because of the risk of falling trees, it was an excellent time for Crusaders to make their mark indoors at the National Seniors in Abbotstown, held over both days of the weekend. By and large we weren’t disappointed, as the club ended up with 3 medals, two silvers and a bronze. We all know that Niamh Allen is a super runner in cross country among other disciplines but, if proof were needed, she also showed her skills indoors in the women’s 3,000m where she managed to take second place in a strong sprint for the line (1.5 seconds separated 2nd from 4th) with a time of 9:47.78 in a field of some quality. Niamh will be delighted with some of the scalps she took. Our second silver medal went to Andrew Mellon who rarely disappoints in the 400m. Andrew will also be happy with some of the scalps he took in qualifying with a win in his heat in 48.35 and 2nd place in the final in a time of 48.02. John O’Loughlin also ran in the heats of the 400m. However, he failed to qualify for the final when he placed 4th in his heat in 59.34. Our third medal was earned by Adam McMullen in the long jump. In a large field of 18, which meant long waits between jumps, Adam, who is only coming back from injury and, with long waits, conscious of re-injury after career-restoring surgery, jumped within himself and took the bronze medal with his 5th leap of 7.12m. It maintained a decent record for him of placing on the podium for several years now. We had athletes who participated in other disciplines, but, unfortunately, they failed to qualify for their respective finals. Shane Keane placed 4th in his heat of the 60m sprint, qualifying for the semi-final as a fastest loser in 7.23 and then went on to record 7.25 for 8th place in the semi-final, whilst Valantinos Goularas placed 5th in heat one of the 60mH in a time of 8.78. John O’Loughlin also competed in the 200m heats where he placed 4th in heat 4 in a time of 25.88. We had two runners in the heats of the men’s 800m. However, neither made it out of the first round. In the fast first heat, where the first 3 athletes ultimately qualified, Fearghal O’Hare, carrying a dodgy hamstring into the race, was unlucky to place 4th in 1:56.13, whilst Kevin Woods competed in the 3rd heat where he placed 3rd in 1:58.58. There were several events on the roads this weekend. On an extremely windy Saturday, Joanne Carey took part in the Tribe 5k organised by Duleek and District AC in Co. Meath, where, in a field of 331 she placed 57th overall (22nd female finisher) in 21:44. The race was won by Sean Doran (an habitual winner of BHAA races recently) who went on to win the following day’s 4 mile race in Lusk, organised by the local athletic club there. We had two runners in a field of 558 in that race. Thom Martini placed 89th in 27:11, followed by Alan Kavanagh who took 199th spot in 30:48. Then, again on Sunday, once again Joe Walsh and his wife, Alma Hanevy, took part in the latest edition of the Gorgeous Gort 5k. In a field of 163, Alma won the women’s race, placing 27th overall in a time of 20:08, whilst Joe placed 12th in 18:16. Also, on Sunday, we had one runner in the inaugural Naas 10 mile race, organised by the local GAA c;lub. In a substantial field for such a race of nearly 600 runners, Mari Hansen placed 513th (234th female) in a time of 1:40:38. Finally, despite a catalogue of things to stress himself out (including locking his car keys in his car and pouring coffee all over himself), a week after the Seville marathon, Leo Lundy completed the boundary marathon around Cambridge. Unfortunately, your correspondent had not paid much attention to mountain running events so far this year, but there have now been two in the Wicklow and Dublin mountains. On 26 January there was a 6k race in Brockagh in Co. Wicklow involving a 200m climb. 180 runners participated in the event, among whom were at least 4 Crusaders. Warren Words placed 5th in 29:21, followed by Ian Clifford (63rd in 36:13), Dorothy Maguire (99th and 10th in 39:21) and Geraldine Clements (119th and 18th in 41:46). The weather seems to have played havoc with at least one event during the past weeks, with a race on Trooperstown Hill in Co. Wicklow being cancelled. This weekend, despite Storm Jorge, the race on Ticknock in the Dublin Mountains went ahead on Saturday morning. There may have been issues with the timing equipment and so, at time of writing, we only have manually-determined finishing positions. In a field of 140 runners, competing on a 5.9k course over difficult terrain, we had at least two runners take part. Warren Swords likely placed 9th, whilst Brian McGuckin, in his first mountain race of the year, likely placed 25th in windy conditions. So, a few parkruns did take place with numbers swelled in one or two of them because of cancellations nearby. In the event, the precautions were probably justified as a few heavy tree limbs in the Phoenix Park in particular (notably at least one on the walkway to the Visitors Centre) had come crashing down at some point during the day on Saturday. As usual, we can count on Crusaders to provide us with some podium places. First place finishers included Ilona McElroy (who placed 2nd overall) who ran 19:09 in Tolka Valley in her preparations for the Bohermeen half marathon next weekend. Overall first place went to her coach, Paul Fleming. Edwina Quinlan also finished ahead of the women’s field in Clonmel where she also placed 11th in 23:36. Meanwhile, Joe O’Donoghue headed the field in Poolbeg in 16:48. Podium places went to Cristian Vilchez Ceballos in St. Anne’s where he ran 17:47 for 3rd place, whilst his partner, Esther Requena Ferri, placed 2nd and 44th in 20:53. Further afield, Sarah Lyons ran in Aylesbury where in a field of 104 runners, she placed 2nd and 20th in 25:10. Runners who came close included at least one fresh from completing the Seville marathon last week. Olwyn Dunne placed 5th and 42nd in 26:56 in Brickfields, whilst Kris Ryan ran in main Beach Queensland where in a field of 353 she placed 4th and 45th in 24:26. In Poolbeg, with a number of returning Seville marathoners, Kenan Furlong placed 5th in 18:04, followed by Paul O’Hara (11th in 19:42), Simon Kenny (29th in 20:31), Zlatko Kulic (34th in 21:10), John Lohan (41st in 21:33), Stephen Mulligan (46th in 21:47), Ava Rose Clarke (62nd and 6th in 22:56), Sharon Woods (64th and 7th in 23:06), Josie Ward (75th and 8th in 23:30), Rory Goldsmith (79th in 23:42), Aitor Arribas Velasco (82nd in 23;49), Ali May Hann (97th and 17th in 24:27), Tara Murphy (114th and 24th in 25:03), Maureen McGinley (173rd and 49th in 27:33) and Mari Hansen (225th and 79th in 30:01). Brian Scanlan took 6th spot in Ardgillan in a time of 21:36, whilst Orla Kennedy placed 5th and 25th in 21:41 in Tymon, followed by Eoghan Corrigan who placed 35th in 22:03. Back in St. Anne’s, Paul F. Kelly possibly ran a PB in recording 19:30 for 22nd place, followed by Aoife Kelly (315th and 81st in 27:47), whilst in Malahide, Deirdre Kennedy ran 24:08 for 112th and 12th, followed by Darina Scully (166th and 26th in 25:36). Helena O’Keeffe ran in Tralee where she placed 59th and 12th in 26:32, whilst Liam Lyster ran in Strokestown where he took 16th spot in a time of 26:29. Finally, Lisa and Mairin Shine ran in Glen River where they placed, respectively, 64th (and 13th) and 127th (and 30th) in 26:08 and 30:46. Duleek & District AC Tribe 5k (331) Overall place Name Cat.
