It was a busy weekend for racing, both indoors and outdoors, in cross country, roads and mountains.

We start with the National Masters Indoors that took place on Sunday. Only 3 of our members turned up for the event in Athlone, but we took away some good results. John O’Loughlin, our prolific masters M50 sprinter, took part in 3 events, medalling in two. In the 60m dash he placed 3rd in 8.09, then came 4th in the 400m in 58.06, just being edged out of a medal by Shane Healy, and also finishing with a silver medal in the 200m in a time of 26.46. O/65 runner Donal Swift ran in two events, agonisingly placing 4th in both. In the 400m he ran 1:26.86 and in the 200m his time was 49.48. Finally, in what turned out to be a two horse race with the field more than 21 seconds behind, John Healy beat the legendary Tommy Hughes for the gold medal in the 1500m, arguably John’s speciality distance. John ran 4:44.26, whilst Tommy ran 4:45.46. However, Tommy did set a new O/60 indoors World record in the 3,000m with his winning time of 9:41.24. Further afield, our exile in Canada, Ian Kinsella ran in the Ontario masters championships in the 3,000m, placing 3rd in his age category in 9:48.

Saturday morning saw the final BHAA XC race of the season, organised by AIB on  the usual relatively flat course in the grounds of the university in Maynooth. In the women’s 2 mile race, the modest 33-strong field contained Niamh Corby who once again mounted the podium, this time in 3rd place in a time of 13:22. The mixed 4 mile race saw Rachael Yorke place as first woman across the line, overall finishing in 41st out of a field of 105. Rachael’s time was 26:56 and she was joined by 8 other Crusaders, led home by Peter O’Toole running excellently for 4th place in 22:58. Peter was followed by the solid running Frank Halligan (9th in 23:51) and then by Michael Wycherley (12th in 24:05) who took home the first place prize in his age category. Joe Walsh was next across the line for a top 20 place (15th in 24:25), followed by Robbie Moore (59th in 28:48), Brendan Glynn (60th in 28:56), Michael McGovern (70th in 30:22) and Paul E. Kelly (96th in 36:16).

We had runners in several road races on Saturday morning. Ciarain Kelly won the Adamstown Community College 5k. He led the field of 60 other runners across the line in a time of 16:31. Congrats to him. Then, Kieran Martin joined his twin brother Fergal, along with 273 other runners, to take part in the Carlingford 10k on the same morning. On this occasion, Fergal got the better of his identical sibling, placing 2nd in 36:32, whilst Kieran didn’t do too badly himself, finishing in 3rd spot in 37:51. Finally, that day, Adam Flanagan took part in the Simon Community 5 mile run in the Phoenix Park. In a field of 1,025 participants, Adam placed 8th on the hilly course (that finishes at the top of the Khyber Pass, having traversed the Snake on Military Road) in a time of 29:20.

In the mountains, IMRA held a 9.6km race, involving a climb of over 300m to the top of Howth and back down on Saturday morning. There were 3 Crusaders in the field of 115, with Brian McGuckin placing 19th in 52:38, followed by Ian Clifford (25th in 54:11) and Dorothy Maguire (62nd and 15th female finisher in 69:07).

On Sunday, in terms of road racing we had at least 16 clubmates take part in the iconic Bohermeen half marathon. It has only been going for a few years, but in that time, it has gathered a reputation for being well organised on a two loop relatively flat course that, almost regardless of weather conditions, creates PBs. Sunday, in blustery conditions with hail and sleet at times, was no exception. The front end of the field saw two athletes, Yared Derese and Kevin Dooney, battle it out for much of the race, with the quality field well behind them. Our first runner to finish, Ciaran Diviney, placed 22nd and 4th in his age category in the field of 1,244 finishers, in an excellent time of 1:16:48. We had another 3 runners to break 80 minutes with Paul Dempsey (preparing for the London marathon) taking 32nd spot (in a PB of 1:17:29), followed by John McAuley (47th in 1:19:02) and Robert Browne (61st in 1:19:56). Next across the line came Eddie Nugent with a super 6 minute PB improvement (106th in 1:22:41), followed by Paul O’Meara (118th in 1:23:20) who is training for the Boston marathon. Ilona McElroy was our first female runner home, placing 122nd and 7th woman in a super PB time of 1:23:28, and Ilona was followed by TJ Bourke and Brian Keenan, both runners also preparing for Boston. TJ placed 124th in 1:23:48, whilst Brian ran a PB of 1:26:57. Paul F. Kelly was next home in 1:29:01, a PB time for him, in 228th place and Paul was followed by Gian Piero Allerta (378th in 1:35:22), Cormac McGuire (415th in 1:36:46), Susie Keeling (594th and 103rd in 1:43:26), Kate Murray (639th and 116th in 1:44:26), Emer Kenny (656th and 121st in a PB of 1:45:25) and Alan Kavanagh (1,154th in 2:14:47). The men's team placed 7th, whilst our women's team placed 4th.

Leo Lundy ran a marathon once again, this time in Co. Antrim on the banks of Lough Neagh, the event being known as Shane’s Castle marathon. He’s hoping to run his next marathon in Japan (Itsabashi) subject to there being no travel restrictions.

We had more excellent performances in the parkruns on Saturday morning. First place finishes went to Dee Lawlor in Shanganagh in a time of 17:32, to Cristian Vilchez Ceballos (19:13) and Esther Requena Ferri (4th overall, in 22:11) in Fairview, to Kenan Furlong (finally, as he has been knocking on the door for some time) (18:06) in Poolbeg and to Catherine Thornton who took in a parkrun on Tooting Common on a weekend visit to London. In a field of 575, on a three-lap course with sharp corners and, despite having to work her way through backmarkers, Catherine placed 15th overall in a time of 19:05. Podium places went to Ger Forde (2nd in 19:02) in Naas and Luke Haran (2nd in 20:22) in Mungret. Near misses were recorded by newcomer Aoife Flanagan in Marlay (55th and 4th in 22:25), Sharon Woods (35th and 4th in 23:34) in Tymon, Ava Rose Clarke (47th and 4th in 23:20) in Poolbeg, Cormac McGuire (7th in 22:30) in Tolka Valley, Darina Scully (33rd and 7th in 25:05) in Porterstown and Ali May Hann and Josie Ward (50th and 6th in 23:43 and 51st and 7th in 23:49) in Poolbeg. We had at least 14 Crusaders in Poolbeg, including Paul O’Hara (9th in 19:44), Tim O’Donnell (15th in 20:28), Mark Swan (26th in 21;24), Bivor Pradhan (32nd in 21:46), Georgina Hawkins (72nd and 15th in 25:00), Mike Fong (84th in 25:49), Tanja Narancic (125th and 44th in 27:59), Gillian Curran (145th and 56th in 29:41) and Mari Hansen (147th and 57th in 30:03). Cormac was joined in Tolka Valley by Diarmuid Byrne (19th in 25:32) and by Maria Pertl (52nd and 28th in 32:49), whilst Colm Foley placed 45th in Griffeen Park in a time of 24:00. Aoife Cowhie ran in St. Anne’s, placing 171st and 40th in 25:28, whilst Aidan Hudner ran in Pollok Park in Glasgow where, in a field of 302, he placed 39th in 23:18. In Poppintree, Paul F. Kelly and Aoife Kelly placed respectively 75th in 29:31 and 93rd and 30th in 31:04, whilst Alan Kavanagh joined Cristian and Esther in Fairview where he placed 40th in 26:44. Lastly, Helena O’Keeffe placed 167th and 29th in 27:33 in Ballincollig, whilst we had 3 participants in Cabinteely. Barry O’Neill ran 23:35 for 23rd place, followed by Lisa Shine (112th and 35th in 32:52) and Mairin Shine, tailwalking.

Finally, we have written in these reports before about the recent successes of the WM&T teams. There was a prize-giving ceremony on Sunday for this year’s winter league attended by most of our teams and one additional trophy was presented. This was the Jim McNamara Cup and it was presented to the athlete who during this period has most reflected the values and spirit of the competition. It was won, most deservedly, by Crusaders’ principal organiser this year, Fiona Shine. Many congrats to her.
