Lisa Corrigan picked up 4 medals: In the F50 category she placed 3rd in the 100mH (0.762m) in a time of 17:22. She also picked up a bronze in the 200m with a time of 35:05. Then, in the long jump, with her last jump of 4, she took silver with a leap of 3.75m. Finally, along with Karl Fitzmaurice, Joanne Carey and Robert Cervi, she picked up a bronze medal in the mixed relay with an aggregate time of 4:32.01.

Robert Cervi also did well. In addition to medalling in the relay, he also took gold in the M45 100m in a time of 12.35, followed by silver in the 200m with a time of 24.80 and gold in the long jump, also with his last leap, with a distance of 5.36m. Another multiple medal winner was Michael Burke who placed 3rd in the M50 100m in 13.23, followed by 2nd in the 200m in 26.73.

Kevin Fitzgibbon took M40 silver in 16:11.49 in the 5000m, followed by John Mulvihill who placed 4th in the same category in 16:49.85. Meanwhile, Sean Brickell took silver in the M55 discus (1.5kg) with his 4th attempt, having left no marks on his first three. Sean threw the discus 32.43m. He also placed 4th in the javelin (700g) with a throw of 33.56m (on his 4th throw). John O’Loughlin took 3rd place in the M55 400m with a time of 63.41. Paul Francis placed 5th in the M60 100m with a time of 14.40, whilst Karl Fitzmaurice placed 4th in the M50 800m recording a time of 2:15.42.

On Sunday, our senior men were competing in the Premier Division, whilst our senior women were contesting the First Division and both teams acquitted themselves extremely well. The men placed 4th in the top division once all the scores had been totalled, agonisingly close to the podium, missing out by one point after the best 17 results were totalled, whilst the women placed 5th in theirs. We’re finally back on the League map and many congrats to all who took part.

The scores appeared as follows (maximum 9 points available to the winner of any event). In the 4x 400m women’s relay, Hope Lewis, Jade Murphy, Rachael Yorke and Sarah Lyons placed 5th in 4:24.73, yielding 4 points. Juliette McCloskey finished in 4th place in the 100mH in 19.46 (4). Charlotte Myers won her 1500m in 4:39.49 (9). Jade took 6th spot in the 400m with a time of 66.09 (3), whilst Emily Sheils won the 3000m in a time of 10:15.44 (9). Juliette also ran in the 200m, placing 5th in 27.78, whilst Hope also placed 5th in the 800m in 2:25.05 (4). Ladies captain Sarah won the 2000m steeplechase in a time of 7:47.31, her training in Irishtown on the water jump for the last couple of Tuesday evenings having fully paid off! Sara Marini Lazarov took 6th place in the shot put (4kg) with a throw of 8.2m (her 3rd of 4 efforts) (3), whilst Marion Gillman placed 3rd in the 100m with a time of 13.55 (6). The redoubtable Philippa Conway threw the hammer 20.25m (her 3rd of 4) for 3rd place (6), whilst also later throwing the discus (1kg) 23.15m with her last effort of 4 for 4th place (5). Juliette O’Connor placed 4th in the triple jump with a leap of 8.57m (5), whilst Elif Ekson participated in both the weight for distance (28lbs) placing 4th with a throw of 3.95m (her 4th effort) and then in the long jump where she also placed 4th with a leap of 4.41 on her first attempt (of 4) (5).

The men also had an enjoyable day. If they weren’t earning many points in one or two cases they were at least getting PBs. As was the case for Alex Ainsworth who ran in the 800m, placing 8th but obtaining a PB time of 2:00.03.

When the smoke cleared the men found they had placed 4th overall, only 1 point behind Ratoath, with the outcome in doubt until the last event, the 4 x 400m relay, where the team of Alex, Robert Cervi, Jack Byrne and Danny Shine placed 7th in 3:40.83 for 2 points, Ratoath placing 2nd for 7 points.

Just as with the women, the day started well with Sean Owens winning the 110mH in 15.07 (9). That was followed by Danny Shine in the 400mh where he placed 4th in 62.70 (5). The 4 x 100m relay team of Lúc Culliton, Liam Beaumont, Sean and Valentinos Goularas took 4th spot in 42.78 (5), whilst Cai Lewis won the 1500m in 4:12.85 (9). Jack Byrne placed 4th in the 400m in 51.53 (5), whilst Adam Shier, in his first 3000m steeplechase took 3rd place in 9:44.11 (6), looking extremely polished in the event.

Lúc went on to place 6th in the 200m in 22.83 (3), whilst Colm Parnell placed 3rd in the 5000m in a time of 15:23.14 (6). Liam took 6th spot in 11.80 in the 100m (3), whilst in the field we also had some excellent results.

Ciaran Donnelly placed 4th with his first throw of the hammer reaching 38.85m (5), whilst Alfie Casey placed 5th in the pole vault after reaching 2.3m (4). Harry Alexander placed 7th with is first attempt in the long jump, a leap of 5.41m, whilst Alfie also took on the high jump, placing 4th with a jump of 1.7m (5). Harry also placed 5th with a leap of 11.21m, his 2nd, in the triple jump, whilst Danny Shine placed 8th with the 800g javelin (27.03m, his 2nd of 4) (1) and Ciaran threw the weight for distance (56lbs) 5.5m (his first effort) for 5th spot (4). Finally, Conor Quinn threw the 2kg discus 28.88m for 5th place (4) and in the shot put (7.26kg) he placed 2nd with a put of 11.89m (7).

On the roads the weekend began on Friday evening with a 5k race down in New Ross, Co. Wexford, organised by United Striders. The downhill race (even more helpful than the Jingle Bells race later in the year) would have yielded quite a few PBs. Indeed, as an example, the winner of the women’s race, Ciara Wilson, who recorded a time of 16:36 to place 2nd in our fast and flat Docklands 5k race in July, ran 15:42 on Friday evening. Three of our members took the opportunity to run and were not disappointed. In the field of 408, Eddie Nugent ran 18:57 for 73rd place, followed by Dee Ni Chearbhaill who placed 118th overall, 18th female finisher and 2nd F45 in 20:25 and then by Mairead Cashman (326th and 125th and 1st F60).

On Saturday evening, the iconic Streets of Galway 8k welcomed a field of 3140, among them at least 6 Crusaders who made the trip west. It is also on a decently fast course. Brian Regan was the first to cross the line, placing 34th in 28:01 and he was followed by Paul Kilgariff (180th in 32:44). John McDonagh was next (209th in 31:14), followed by Louise O’Riordan (211th and 18th in 33:06), Eamon MacFhionnlaoich (265th in 34:02) and Maureen McGinley (2009th and 789th in 49:35).

On Sunday, in damp conditions Kathryn Gibbons joined a field of 382 in the Monaghan 10-miler, where she placed 38th and 4th in 65:22, a super result for our ladies’ vice-captain.

Further afield, two of our Spanish exiles ran in a couple of races last week. The first was the 5.7k trail race, the Subido a Colmenar, where Esther Requena Ferri took 3rd place in the women’s race in 29:14, whilst Cristian Vilchez Ceballos ran 26:11. Later in the week they both competed in the Carrera Santo Cristo del Zapato, another trail race of 10.7k where Esther won the women’s event in 59:42 and Cristian ran 55:39. Also, on Saturday, Tilde Martinsen, on a trip to Alberta in Canada, took part in a 25k foothill trail race near Calgary (the Iron Legs 25k) with 200m climbs in places, and where she won the women's race in a time of 3:25. Finally, Jens Seggewiss ran a 10k road race in Laer (the Beerlager) in his native Germany where he recorded a time of 36:26.

There was one race organised in the mountains by IMRA at the weekend with Crusader participation. Jason Kehoe ran alongside 117 other participants in the Tinahely Half marathon trail race (actually measuring 22.5k), with a climb of over 1000m, where he placed 22nd in 22:36:50.

Several Crusaders headed over to the Aran Islands for the weekend, where they took part in the Inis Méain parkrun on Saturday morning. In a field of 65, Stephen Ryan placed 6th in 21:02, followed by Daniel Littlewood (7th in 21:22), Kabir Sala (9th in 22:05), Saketh Ravuluri (12th in 22:47), Sean Brady (14th in 24:44), Luz Estevan (15th and 2nd in 24:45), Aoife McCarthy (17th and 4th in 25:51), Laura O’Malley (21st and 6th in 26:52), Michelle English (33rd and 11th in 29:27), Carina Davidson (34th and 12th in 29:30), Darren Kelly (45th in 31:51), Cynthia Perucca (48th and 20th in 33:21) and Marie-Claire Daly (56th and 27th in 38:35).

Stephen Hurley was once again a first finisher in Poolbeg. In a field of 194 he ran 17:32, and he was followed by Ronan Walsh (27th in 21:55), Zlatko Kulic (43rd in 23:47), Claire Reidy (45th and 7th in 23:51), Brian O’Neill (60th in 25:11), Sharon Woods (78th and 13th in 26:41), Siobhan Russell (114th and 32nd in 29:31), Djinn Von Noorden (118th and 36th in 29:41), Josie Ward (122nd and 39th in 30:02), Iseult Ni Chuinneagain (137th and 45th in 31:09), Mairead Cashman (148th and 52nd in 32:14) and Edwina Hogan (157th and 57th in 33:27).

Mikel Crisostomo was another first finisher, this time in Father Collins, where, in a field of 154, he ran 17:36, whilst, in the Achill Greenway parkrun, Ashley Hayes placed 2nd in 21:22 in a field of 53. Ross Neill headed to Belvoir Forest, Belfast, where he ran 20:00 for 4th place in a field of 78, whilst Kevin Lambe joined 166 other runners in Mullingar where he placed7th in 20:46. John Lohan ran in Athlone where, in a field of 117, he placed 11th in 21:41, whilst in St. Anne’s, with a field of 500, Peter O’Toole placed 6th in 18:56, followed by Emer Kenny (102nd and 12th in 24:06).

Lisa Shine ran down in Cork on the Midleton Greenway, where she took 55th and 15th spots in a field of 175 and in a time of 26:41, whilst David Carter was our sole runner among the 343 participants in Shanganagh where he recorded a time of 19:53 for 15th place.

Runners in the later Streets of Galway joined the field of 80 in Clonbur Woods, where Eamon MacFhionnlaoich placed 6th in 23:44, followed by Louise O’Riordan (26th and 5th in 28:17) and Maureen McGinley (65th and 27th in 51:29). Myles Nolan and Natalie McEvoy joined 524 other runners in Marlay Park, where Myles placed 37th in 21:453, followed by Natalie (392nd and 140th in 33:20), whilst Ailish Hassett placed 183rd and 88th in 53:13 in the field of 225 on Bere Island. Georgina Loughrey placed 131st and 34th in 31:00 in the 255-strong field in Tramore, Waterford, whilst Ellen Walsh placed 56th and 12th in Dodder Valley. The field measured 157 and Ellen’s time was 27:41. Meanwhile, we had 3 runners in Cabinteely with its field of 185. Kevin Kenny placed 104th in 30:14, followed by Fiona Shine (110th and 20th in 30:58) and Máirín Shine (113th and 22nd in 31:15).

Several of our members ran in parkruns abroad. Chris Bannon ran in Denmark in the 140-strong field of Amager Strandpark where he placed 34th in 23:13, whilst Michael O’Shea placed 25th in 20:24 in Woodlands, Scarborough with its field of 286. Joe O’Reilly placed 472nd in 35:19 in the 544-strong field in Bishop’s Stortford, whilst Martina White placed 135th and 34th in 29:25 in Gladstone in London with a field of 290. Finally, one of our London exiles, Thom Martini, ran once again in Gunnersbury. In a field of 763 he placed 184th in 24:51.

South East Greenway 5k Stride (408)
Overall place Name Cat. We were treated to some excellent contests, several involving our club colleagues.

On the first day, Charlotte Myers was our first athlete out on the track and, running in the first heat of three, she posted the 9th fastest time across the 3 heats, finishing in an excellent 4th place in her heat with a time of 2:10.80. The men’s 1500m involved four heats and in the first Cai Lewis broke away early from the field but was slowly reeled in to finish in a creditable 6th place in 3:58.23. Alex Ainsworth tackled the second heat, placing 11th in 4:11.25. Finally, Sarah Lyons ran a gutsy 4:47.12, not far off her PB in the women’s 1500m, placing 14th in her heat. None of the runners progressed to the final in what was for each their first appearances in national senior competition on the track. Hugo Magee and Lúc Culliton contested heat 5 (of 7) in the men’s 200m, with Hugo placing 2nd in 21.98 and Lúc just behind in 3rd in 22.77. Unfortunately, despite their placings, their times were not fast enough to qualify for the semi-final, ending up 17th and 26th of 51 competitors in the first round of the event.

The first day was concluded by two 4 x 100m relays, men’s and women’s. The women’s team of Marion Gillman, Meabh Murphy, Juliette O’Connor and Juliette McCloskey placed 6th in their final in a time of 51.97, whilst the men’s team unfortunately got into difficulties on the second exchange and were unable to finish.

We had 4 athletes compete on day 2 in the men’s 100m. There were ten heats, leading to a semi-final and a final. In the second heat Luke Timlin qualified for the semi-final in 2nd place with a time of 10.80. He was joined by Sean Owens who also placed 2nd in his heat (9) in a time of 10.84. Liam Beaumont, with a 7th place in heat 5 in 11.49, and Lúc, placing 5th in heat 8 in 11.32, were unable to progress. In the semi-final first heat, Luke placed 6th in 10.85, with Sean placing 6th in the same time in the second semi-final. Unfortunately, neither were able to progress.

Then, towards the end of the afternoon, Colm Parnell and Adan Shier ran in the second of three runnings of the 5000m, the medals being decided by the fastest times across the 3 races. Colm placed 5th in a time of 15:04.24, with Adam, punching the air as he crossed the line, placing 7th in a PB time of 15:08.14 (an improvement of nearly 12 seconds).

There were several road races taking place during the week and over the weekend.

On Tuesday evening Abdé Boumaza participated in the Park West Night Run 5k in a field of 590, placing 6th overall in a time of 17:45. He was followed by Helen Finucane (390th overall and 163rd female finisher in 31:56), whilst on the same evening, David O’Donnell ran in the Burtonport Festival 5k, situated near Letterkenny in Co. Donegal. In a field of 130, David placed 27th overall in a PB time of 20:25 and first place in his M60 age category. Also, during the week, Ellen Walsh joined the field of 75 on the well-known mile loop in Raheny for the John Fennell Cup, a two-mile race in the Raheny 2-mile Race Series. Ellen placed 39th overall and 4th female finisher in a time of 14.23.

Then, over the weekend, Sligo natives Shane Egan, Paddy Gaynor and Ellen took part in the two races on offer there, a 10k and 5k known as the Keash King of the Hill. Ellen, in her second race of the week, took on the 5k with a field of 51, where she placed 13th and 5th in 24:08, whilst in the 113-strong field in the 10k, Shane placed 6th in 38:38, followed closely by Paddy (7th in 39:14). The 10k involved an early climb in the first 3k, followed by a largely downhill 7k.

Then, in Co Clare, we had at least 5 of our members take part in the Kilkee Half marathon. On a windy, rainy and hilly course, Asley Hayes placed 4th in the field of 1216 finishers and in a time of 79:24. Ashley was followed by Louise O’Riordan (68th and 7th in a PB time of 93:21), Eamon MacFhionnlaoich (86th and 2nd M60 in a time of 95:28), James Beary (208th in 1:41:33) and Matthew Dundon (280th in 1:45:50).

Further afield, Aitor Arribas Velasco tackled another ultra marathon. The race was staged in the Wirral in the UK and was a Backyard Ultra, consisting of running loops of 4.1 miles every hour until one runner remains. Aitor was able to manage 12 hours with a total distance of 50 miles. He did, however, point out that there were still athletes going after 25 hours!

There was a midweek IMRA race in which we had a participant. Donatas Jocius joined a field of 108 in Co. Louth for the Carnavaddy 10k, involving a 450m climb around the Ravensdale Forest. Donatas placed 11th in 58:00. Then, at the weekend, Kevin Lambe raced on Slieve Bawn in Co. Roscommon. In a race of 8k with a climb of 250m, Kevin placed 20th and 3rd M50 in a field of 34 and in a time of 43:30.

We had one first finisher this week in the parkruns. April Dunne placed 24th and 1st in 24:53 in Fairview. In the field of 194, April was followed by Fanny Trébouet (52nd and 7th in 28:14).

Meanwhile, Mary Donnelly placed 25th and 2nd in 22:54 in Bushy Park with its field of 247. Mary was preceded by Kev Moore (5th in 20:01), whilst, in Shanganagh with 285 runners, Dee Lawlor took 2nd spot in 18:25. He was followed by Mairead Cashman (192nd and 67th in 31:03) and Órlaith de Burca (194th and 69th in 31:06), just behind Mairead.

In Ballymount, with its field of 189, Aoife McCarthy placed 32nd and 3rd in 24:43, followed by Carina Davidson (69th and 15th in 28:37), Máirín Shine (96th and 28th in 30:57) and Lisa Shine (107th and 37th in 32:01), whilst, in St. Anne’s, Peter O’Toole took 6th spot in 18:51, ahead of Michael O’Shea (11th in 19:12) and Grainne Regan (130th and 17th in 25:30). The field there measured 490.

There was a field of 292 in Poolbeg, among them fewer Crusaders than of late. The contingent was led home by Stephen Hurley (5th in 18:05) and he was followed by Joe Murphy (7th in 18:33), Mustaf Ahmed (17th in 20:07), Daniel Littlewood (35th in 21:36), Russell Murphy (77th in 25:23), Imogen Guinness (80th and 11th in 25:38), Sharon Woods (106th and 23rd in 27:03), Aisling O’Riordan (153rd and 52nd in 29:10), Kevin Kenny (169th in 29:42), Lorraine McMahon (171st and 59th in 29:48), Cynthia Perucca (230th and 96th in 34:14), Edwina Hogan (233rd and 99th in 34:23, with Tara Murphy tailwalking.
Meanwhile, David O’Donnell joined 65 other runners in Dungloe, where he placed 10th in 22:56, whilst in Malahide, Kabir Sala was our sole representative in the field of 385, placing 42nd in 21:30. Brendan Glynn took 30th spot in the 242-strong field in Donabate, with a time of 23:04, whilst, in Marlay Park, with its field of 534, Alban Coghlan placed 7th in 18:44, followed by Paul Flynn (8th in 18:46), Killian Barry (15th in 19:47) and Myles Nolan (41st in 21:51). Paul F. Kelly ran alongside 60 other runners on Narin Beach, where he placed 6th in 24:42, whilst Áine Crotty placed 168th and 46th in 31:17 in the field of 252 in Tramore Valley in Cork. Staying in that region, Helena O’Keeffe placed 124th and 24th in Ballincollig with its field of 306 in a time of 27:50.

Finally, further afield, Rob Glascott and Eva Kennedy, two of our London exiles, ran in the 746-strong field on Clapham Common, where Rob placed 62nd in 21:24 and Eva placed 179th and 26th in 24:35. Down in Australia, Kris Ryan, one of our exiles there, ran once again in Paradise Point parkrun where, in a field of 407, she placed 133rd and 32nd in 25:46.

Parkwest Dublin Night Run 5k (590)
Overall place Name Cat. The short distance racers love it; but, it’s not so helpful for our longer distance runners. On balance though, despite its challenges, we should embrace it and enjoy it while it lasts and we may have to get used to it going forward in any event!

On a warm sunny evening on Wednesday, the 7th Dublin Athletics graded meet took place in Lucan. The club was well represented with several athletes taking part in the track & field events.

In the first heat of the women’s grade A 800m Charlotte Myers placed 6th in 2:12.41, followed by Sarah Lyons (11th in 2:19.98). Then, in the grade C race of the same distance, Jade Murphy placed 3rd in a time of 2:29.67. In the men’s 800m series, Lucas Ryan placed 2nd in the A grade event with a super time of 1:53.19 whilst Enda Clarke placed 3rd in the first heat of the B standard race, with a time of 2:01.26.

We then had a series of 3000m races and we were well represented by the men here. Brian Regan ran in the A graded race where he placed 15th in 9:49.21, whilst Karl Fitzmaurice and Jan Manschot both ran in the B grade race, placing, respectively, 6th and 7th in times of 10:07.10 and 10:11.40. Finally, on the track, Cillian Traynor won the grade C race in a time of 10:36.05.

There was only one field event that took place at the meet, the shot put, which was won by Antonio Santa Otero using the standard 7.25kg shot, which he launched a mighty 17.48m with his 2nd throw of 6.

Saturday and Sunday saw the AAI Games along with the National Combined Events Championships take place in the Morton Stadium in Santry and we had several athletes taking part, mostly in the sprints, but also in middle distance events and in the field too.

Lisa Corrigan took on the F50 pentathlon, where she recorded points in 4 of the 5 events, running 17.67 for the 80mH (0.762m), 3:02.11 for the 800m, registering 3.67m for the long jump and 4.72m with the 3kg shot, to win the gold medal in that category. Congrats to her!

The 100m races were divided into 2 series, with each series involving several heats, with finishing places being determined by the times across the heats in each series. In the first series of the women’s 100m, Marion Gillman ran in heat 1 where she placed 7th in 13.46. Then, in heat 3, Juliette McCloskey placed 4th in 13.30, followed by Elif Eksin (7th in 14.18). Overall, Juliette placed 18th, Marion 20th and Elif 22nd. In series 2, Marion placed 3rd in heat 3 in 13.18, followed by Juliette (4th in 13.44) and Elif (7th in 14.39). When the smoke had cleared, Marion placed 17th overall, followed by Juliette (18th) and Elife (21st).

The men’s 100m had the same arrangement. In heat 1 of the first series Charlie Bastow placed 6th in 11.10, whilst in heat 2 Luc Culliton took 2nd in 11.34, with Liam Beaumont placing 5th in heat 3 in a time of 11.58, meaning that Charlie placed 6th overall, followed by Luc (12th) and Liam (20th). Charlie then took 5th place in heat 1 of series 2 in 11.16, whilst, in heat 2, Luc placed 2nd in 11.12, followed by Liam (6th in 11.49). The overall picture revealed that Luc placed 6th, Charlie 7th and Liam 16th. The men’s field largely measured 24-30, whilst the women’s overall field was 21-23.

There was just one round of the 200m. In heat 2 of 3, Karen Hughes placed 6th in 27.28. Then, in the 3rd heat, the race was won by Marion (27.01), followed by Juliette (2nd in 27.48) and Meabh Murphy (5th in 28.85). The 200m event overall was won in 24.14 by ex-Crusader, now running for UCD, Rhianna McCarthy, with Marion placing 12th, Karen 13th, Juliette 14th and Meabh 17th.

Luc was our only male representative in the 200m series, placing 6th in the 2nd heat in 22.58, and 11th overall.

Sarah Lyons took on the women’s 1500m where she placed 10th in 4:52.10, whilst Alex Ainsworth ran in the men’s race of the same distance, placing 7th in heat 2 in a time of 4:06.49. Finally, Antonio Santana Otero easily beat the field in the shot put with all three of his successful marks of the 7.26kg shot, recording a distance of 17.78m with his second effort.

On the same evening as the graded meet, the BHAA held its annual DCC 5k race using the Poolbeg parkrun course in Seán Moore Park, with its climb and descent in the Irishtown Nature Reserve. As usual, our clubhouse played an integral part in the registration and post-race festivities.

In a field of 120 runners, rather a regular size now for BHAA events, Joe Walsh ran 18:10 for 6th place overall and 2nd in his M50 age category. He led the Crusaders contingent home and was followed by Lucas Huchard in quite possibly his first BHAA race (9th in 18:28). Next came Karl Walsh (15th and 2nd M45 in 19:35), followed by Eamon MacFhionnlaoich, a man familiar with the course (25th and 2nd M60 in 20:42), David O’Donnell (34th and 3rd M60 in 21:08), Anthony Hackett (48th in 21:57), Sharon Woods (51st overall, 10th female finisher and 3rd F55 in 22:21), Chris Bannon (61st in 23:31) and Robbie Moore (73rd in 24:45).

Then, on Saturday, Dee Ni Chearbhaill took part in the East wall ITBB 5k, where in a field of 375, she placed 50th overall and 5th female finisher in a time of 22.13. Further afield on the same day, Ronan Walsh and his partner Claire Reidy ran in the Battersea half marathon in London, finishing side by side in 99:41 (Claire) and 99:42 (Ronan) in 189th and 190th places in a field of 873.

In slightly cooler but still sunny conditions, 1626 runners finished the Irish Runner 10-miler in the Phoenix Park, a race that incorporated the 10-mile national road championships. As with all longer distance races in the Phoenix Park, the course was hilly.

We had at least 15 runners in the race, led home by Ciarain Kelly in a time of 58:25 for 54th place. Ciarain was followed by Henry Griffin (118th in 62:11), Michael O’Shea (219th in 68:10), Ray Walsh (280th in 70:36), Liam O’Brien (358th in 72:01), David O’Donnell (412th in 73:46), Sharon Woods (501st and 97th in 78:00), Phelim Murray (534th in 75:53), Daniel Littlewood (648th in 79:32), Juliane Frydenlund (932nd and 225th in 88:22), Mauro Verrocchio (975th in 89:50), Lisa Branigan (1145th and 320th in 96:29) after a long run to get to the start line, Iseult Ni Chuinneagain (1168th and 333rd in 97:28), Kevin Kenny, pacing the 100 minutes runners (1246th in 99:30), and Heather Sander (1354th and 433rd in 1:44:20).

Also, on Sunday morning, TJ Bourke took part in the Malahide Castle Summer Series 10k, where, alongside 724 other finishers, he placed 5th in a PB time of 36:54.

There was one race in the mountains with Crusaders participation. On Wednesday, 132 runners took to Trooperstown Hill in Co. Wicklow, with its climb of 455m over 11.5k, and they were joined by Jason Kehoe and Gavan Doherty. Jason placed 30th in 67:34, followed by Gavan in 70th spot in 78:19.

There was a decent participation by club members on Saturday morning’s parkruns. Alma Hanevy was a first finisher in Mullingar, where, in a field of 112, she placed 9th overall in a time of 22:09, whilst, in Father Collins Park, in a field of 217, Ivan Kinahan led everyone home in 17:19. Front row: L-R: Máirín Shine, Paula Bradshaw, Sarah Lyons, Emily Glen, Fiona Shine, Emer Kenny and Cynthia Perucca
We have been enjoying an incredible heatwave and once again we had warm and sunny conditions for the 10th running on Thursday evening of the Docklands 5k, a major fundraiser for the club. Indeed, we also were able to cope with a much larger field than previously, with nearly 2,000 finishers and the out-and-back race along the quays was, as usual, well received by those who took part.

We start, however, with the DSD games, organised by Leinster Athletics for masters athletes in the athletics stadium up in Tibradden on Saturday. The format was a one-day league and, as with the senior league, points were awarded for finisher positions, regardless of age. We had 5 intrepid members take part, competing in 9 different disciplines along with a mixed format 4 x 100m relay.

When the smoke had cleared, the club placed 4th overall. However, one of the places went to Co. Meath, so that we actually finished as 3rd placed club.

In the men’s 100m, Michael Burke placed 2nd with a PB of 12.76 and 1st in his M50 category. Michael also placed 3rd in the 200m, again finishing 1st M50 in 26.23. Unfortunately, he developed a hamstring niggle and his place was taken admirably by our discus thrower, Sean Brickell, his first such race since school days.

Lisa Corrigan placed 6th and 2nd F50 in the women’s 100m in a time of 15.81 and following that result up with 5th place overall and 1st F50 in the high jump with a leap of 1.04m. Gary Park placed 5th and 2nd in the M50 category in a time of 5:18.87 in the 1500m and 6th and 2nd in the 800m in 2:29.67, whilst Robert Cervi placed 2nd and 1st in his M45 age category with a jump of 4.99m in the long jump. Sean Brickell took 4th place overall, 3rd in his M55 category, in the 6kg shot put with a throw of 8.12m and followed that with 2nd overall and 1st in the age category in the discus with a throw of 34.06m. Finally, in the 4 x 100m relay, the team of Lisa, Sean, Robert and Gary ran a collective 58.44 in heat 1 of 2 heats, placing 5th overall.

On Wednesday evening, a few of our members took part in the Dublin Track Club-organised paced 1 kilometre on Lucan’s track. Ciara Regan ran 3:19, followed by Mags Foley who ran 3:33 and Eamon MacFhionnlaoich (3:41). A great idea!

On Saturday afternoon, Charlotte Myers headed to Watford for the British Milers Club meet, where she ran in the women’s C grade 800m on the track there, placing 6th in a time of 2:09.49.

Back to the Docklands 5k. We had been hopeful of both our course records of 14:30 (men) and 16:12 (women) set in 2017 might be broken this year as we had a quality field. In the event, the strong-ish headwind on the way out to the Point and then along Sir John Rogerson’s Quay to the finish line probably scuppered that. Nevertheless, we had excellent runs from our two winners, Hugh Armstrong (14:40) and Leevale’s Michelle Finn (16:20) on what must be Dublin’s fastest inner-city course.

It was a super turnout of members, volunteering to steward and assist generally in the race and we also had several members participate in the race itself. Several of them are listed below, but there were definitely a few more, whose results are hard to find. Additionally, the official results need to be updated with the results of our general pacers, of which there were 8, ably organised by Kieran Martin. There were also at least 5 pacers from the club supporting those runners who took part in our most recent Couch25k programme, specifically focused for this race. It should also be noted that the Mary Purcell Cup for the first club female team was won for the second year in a row by DCH, whilst Raheny won the men’s trophy, the John Fitzsimons Cup.

As mentioned, there were a few Crusaders in the race, and a few need to be mentioned. Sebastian Hansen, running with his Meta colleagues, placed 15th in a PB time of 15:46, whilst Gerry Cooper placed 75th in 17:25. Stephen Ryan was another athlete to record a PB, of which there were many amongst the field on the night, with his time of 20:43 for 401st spot. Gavan Doherty, in the second of 3 races in which he competed this week (whilst also being crucial for erecting signs for the race), placed 353rd in 20:34. It should be noted that Ira Rischkopf finished her short spell with us before returning to her native Germany, placing 756th overall and 133rd female finisher in 24:08.

On Sunday morning, in warm and sunny conditions and on a new course (apparently avoiding the dual carriageway), we had at least 22 clubmates take part in the Irish Life Race Series Fingal 10k, the first of this year's races organised by the Dublin marathon overseers in the build up to the 42.2k event in October. At least 8 Crusaders helped to pace runners in the race and did a super job. They were Mikel Crisostomo and Kieran Martin (45 mins), Emily Glen and Kabir Sala (50 mins), Paula Bradshaw and Fiona Shine (55 mins) and Olwyn Dunne and Lisa Shine (60 mins). It should be noted that the winner of the women’s race, Ciara Wilson, had placed 2nd in the Docklands 5k on Thursday evening.

The racing contingent was led home by Michael O’Shea, placing 162nd in the field of 2717 finishers and in a time of 40:43. Michael was followed by Isabella Gyori (215th and 10th in 41:03), Eddie Nugent (263rd in 42:11), Noel Carr (406th in 44:08), David O’Donnell (477th with a PB time of 44:38), Luz Estevan (552nd and 64th in 43:47), Lisa Branigan (583rd and 72nd in 46:25), Chris Bannon (815th in 48:51), Robbie Moore (1132nd in 52:44), Robert Cervi (1311th in 54:45), Phelim Murray who had a delayed start (1338th in 51:46), Emer Kenny (1370th and 320th in 54:37), Kevin Kenny (1487th in 56:31), Bo Chicoine (1498th in 56:37) and Paul E. Kelly (2172nd in 65:11).

As mentioned, Gavan Doherty took to the mountains on both Wednesday evening and Saturday morning. On Wednesday, he took part in the 11.67k race over Djouce with a field of 142 and enjoying a climb of 660m. Gavan placed 100th in 1:45:15. Then, on Saturday, he ran again in Wicklow, in the 10.5k race up and down Log Na Coille involving a climb of 700m. In a field of 65, Gavan placed 27th in 93:00.

We had a smaller contingent than usual in Poolbeg on Saturday morning. One of our London exiles, Kate O’Malley placed 6th and 1st in 19:05 in the field of 227, and she was followed by Ciara Regan (10th and 2nd in 19:49). Further back came Daniel Littlewood (20th in 21:20) and he was followed by Russell Murphy (90th in 26:45), Jan Manschot (97th in 27:10) pacing one of his sons, Josie Ward (101st and 22nd in 27:19), Ellen Walsh (103rd and 24th in 27:25), alongside Emily Glen (104th and 25th in the same time), Sharon Woods, who nobly stepped in at the last minute to pace the 30 minutes runners (156th and 54th in 30:14), Iseult Ni Chuinneagain (159th and 56th in 30:27), Mari Hansen (177th and 71st in 32:53) and Maureen McGinley (180th and 73rd in 33:10).

Timothy Bowen placed 2nd in the field of 295 in Shanganagh with a time of 18:32, and he was followed by Louise O’Riordan (34th and 2nd too in 23:08). Aoife McCarthy was next (93rd and 21st in 26:08), followed by Kate Murray (103rd and 23rd in 26:22), Carina Davidson, celebrating a milestone birthday (164th and 47th in 29:20) alongside Darina Scully (165th and 48th in 29:21), Máirín Shine (194th and 68th in 31:09), Fiona Shine (195th and 69th in 31:10) and Lisa Shine (249th and 96th in 36:40). Then, in Mullingar, Ross Neill took 3rd spot in a field of 119 and in a time of 18:57. It’s great to see our sprinters flourishing.

One of the highlights of day one of the two-day competition was the winning of the men’s U23 4 x 100m relay with a new national U23 record time of 42.82. The team comprised Sean Owens, who also took home the silver medal in the 100m with a time of 10.77, Luke Timlin, Liam Beaumont and Charlie Bastow. All had competed in the individual 100m heats with differing outcomes. Liam placed 6th in heat 1 in a time of 11.67, whilst Sean had placed 2nd in the second heat in 10.84, and qualifying in a non-automatic time. In the third heat Charlie placed 4th in 11.26, whilst Luke won the fourth heat in a time of 11.18. Sean, as mentioned, ran in the final with Luke, the latter, like Sean, improving his time, placing 6th in 10.89.

On the second day Sean went on to take silver in the U23 110mH straight final, with a time of 14.69. Congrats to the relay team and to Sean for his individual success too, bringing home 3 medals (one gold and two silver).

Otherwise, all the racing action this weekend took place on the roads, in a couple of half marathons. A few of our club-mates headed over to Achill Island for the latest running of the annual half-marathon there. In wet and windy conditions, Ashley Hayes was our first runner home on a hilly course in the field of 821 finishers, placing 11th in 87:35. Ashley was followed by James Sherry (23rd in 89:39) and then further back by Karl Walsh (86th in 99:35), just ahead of David O’Donnell (89th in 99:46). Next came recent returnee from Dubai, John Cunnane, who placed 108th in 1:41:18, just ahead of Darran Lovely (116th in 1:41:59), with Patrick Needham further back in 184th spot (1:48:22). Chris Bannon came next (307th in 1:53:40), followed by Robbie Moore (377th in 1:57:58). There was another runner from the club in the race, Brian (?). However, his result may not have been recorded. If clarified, the report will be updated.

The usual mayhem that is the summer running of the Clontarf half marathon took place on Saturday morning in windy conditions too, but also warm. In the field of 3984 finishers, Sebastian Hansen placed 6th in 75:53, well ahead of our other runners who were led by Denis Holohan (126th in 91:35). Denis was followed by Michael O’Shea (225th in 95:54), Jill O’Flynn (306th overall and 25th female finisher in 98:47), and then by Ryan Preston (581st in 1:45:33). Daniel Littlewood was next (807th in 1:47:36), followed by Phil Sykes (1538th in 1:55:10), Sharon Woods (2598th and 712th in 2:11:10). Ryan Murphy and Noel Higgins must have started quite far back as they had faster chip times than Sharon, but finished behind her on gun time. Ryan placed 2898th in 2:08:14, with Noel taking 2911th in 2:08:40. Finally, Anousheh Alamir placed 3021st and 929th in 2:13:38.

Further afield, on Saturday, and coming back from injury, Andrea Rondina, now residing in San Francisco, placed 22nd in 16:06 in the Blue Heron 5k there, whilst on Sunday one of our exiles in Australia, Maurice Kelter, further improved on his marathon time with an amazing PB improvement of nearly 6 minutes, to run 2:30:04 in the Gold Coast Marathon.

There should be two races organised by IMRA on which to report during this period. The first is recorded and was a 10k race on Wednesday evening on Sorrel Hill in Co. Wicklow. In the race, with its climb of 544m and a field of 136, we had three Crusaders take part. Gavan Doherty placed 61st in 72:58, followed by Daniel O’Mahony (98th in 84:47) and his partner, Cecilia Sandre, 100th and 22nd in 85:07. The second took place in rainy and foggy conditions on Benulben in Co. Sligo, involving a distance of 9k and a 400m climb. Kevin Lambe took part, placing 35th in a field of 43 in a time of 80 minutes.

There was the first running of a new parkrun on Saturday morning, in Ballymount, and it attracted a sizeable field of 371, including Mairead Cashman who placed 204th and 64th in 31:01.

We had at least one first finisher with a smattering of podium places too. Isabelle Cairns placed 6th and 1st in the 122-strong field in New Ross, in a time of 21:46, whilst, in Bushy Park with a field of 292, Luke Corcoran placed 2nd in 19:35, followed by Kev Moore (3rd in 19:41) and Mary Donnelly (24th and 2nd in 22:34). Meanwhile, in Father Collins Park with its field of 147, Ivan Kinahan took 2nd place in a time of 17:20 as did Stephen Hurley in Poolbeg. Stephen’s 2nd place finish was 18:01 in a field of 248. He was followed by young Joe Murphy (4th in 18:52) and then by Ross Neill (11th in 20:56). John Lohan flew to record a time of 21:23 and 18th place and he was followed by a super run from young Alice Beddy, who recorded a time of 22:54 (for 37th and 6th spots) without a bother. Eamon MacFhionnlaoich placed the 24 minutes runners, placing 53rd in 23:54, and he was followed by James Cottle (64th in 24:36) just ahead of Claire Reidy (66th and 11th in 24:46). Ger Moore was next (71st in 25:02) and he was followed by Imogen Guinness (87th and 18th in 26:04), Josie Ward, who is expecting her first child in November (102nd and 25th in a highly respectable 26:55), who ran with Emily Glen (103rd and 26th in 26:57) and Louise O’Riordan (104th and 27th in 26:58). Iseult Ni Chuinneagain was next (128th and 38th in 28:11), followed by Bo Chicoine (141st in 28:40), running his 50th parkrun, Aisling O’Riordan (151st and 51st in 29:18), Kevin Kenny, pacing the 30 minutes runners (158th in 29:52), Djinn Von Noorden (161st and 55th in 29:59), Luz Estevan (162nd and 56th in 30:04), Mari Hansen (180th and 68th in 31:13), Maureen McGinley (184th and 71st in 31:35), Edwina Hogan (10th and 92nd in 35:29) , with Tara Murphy, recovering from a broken arm, tailwalking.

Kathryn Tomkins joined 311 other runners in Shanganagh where she placed 35th and 4th in 22:16, followed by Órlaith de Burca (224th and 74th in 31:59), whilst in Tymon Park, Daniel Lowe also placed 4th (in 19:12) and he was followed in the field of 141 by Myles Nolan (23rd in 22:40) and Kate Murray (53rd and 10th in 27:03). James Donlon took 4th spot in the 186-strong field in Cabinteely in a time of 20:35, followed by Niall O’Connell (14th in 23:03), whilst Paula Nolan ran in Tramore Valley, Cork, in a field of 240, placing 60th and 6th in 24:50.

Partly in support of the Sanctuary Runners who had experienced some aggressive behaviour against them last week, we had several runners take part in the 240-strong field in Poppintree. Paul F. Kelly placed 85th in 27:00, followed by Anna Shine (113th and 36th in 28:26), Lisa Shine (127th and 43rd in 29:39) alongside Emer Kenny (128th and 44th in 29:40) and ahead of Máirín Shine (180th and 74th in 34:57). Martina White ran once again in Porterstown where, alongside 141 other participants, she placed 74th and 17th in 30:03, whilst, in Ballincollig, Helena O’Keeffe placed 71st and 19th in 27:17. The field there measured 187. Colm Foley took 41st spot in 23:42 in Griffeen with its 187 participants, whilst Kabir Sala headed up to Stormont where, in a field of 420, he placed 64th in 23:41. Finally, Darina Scully ran in Avondale Forest again, placing 42nd and 8th in 27:40. Darina was joined in the field of 114 by Carina Davidson who placed 57th and 12th in 30:04.

Further afield, Áine Kenny ran in the UK, in the Heaton parkrun, where, in a field of 865, she placed 106th and 7th in 22:42, whilst one of our London exiles, Thom Martini ran 24:00 for 66th spot in the 448-strong field in Osterley. Rachael Yorke ran in the women’s grade C 1500m, placing 2nd in 5:12.61, whilst in the men’s series, Enda Clarke placed 3rd in 4:12.03 in the grade B race. Gary Park took 7th spot in 4:56.02 in the first heat of the grade D event, whilst Brendan Glynn placed 12th in 6:06.15 in the second heat.

Maria Cornado ran in the women’s 400m grade D race, placing 4th in 71.67, whilst, in the field, Daniel Murphy won the junior hammer event (B standard) and throwing the 5kg hammer 54.31m with the 4th of 6 throws.

There was another BHAA road race on Tuesday evening. This was the Marsh 5k that took place on an undulating loop around Donomore Green south of Tallaght. In a field of 91, Joe Walsh placed 4th in 18:19, followed by Karl Walsh (10th in 19:06), Sharon Woods (41st overall and 3rd female finisher in 23:01) and Emma O’Mahony (57th overall, 6th female finisher and 1st F40).

On Thursday, a few members made the trip, always a challenge in rush hour, to Clonee on the border of Counties Meath and Dublin. One or two decided not to race because of it being the hottest day of the year so far. Those that did, found the going challenging. In a field of 510, Killian Lynskey placed 88th in 41:45, followed by Eddie Nugent (120th in 43;47) and Robbie Moore (297th in 54:01). Then, the following evening, we had more takers for the St. Coca’s 5k, in slightly cooler conditions, but of course a shorter distance.

At least 24 Crusaders joined the field of 518 in Kilcock, Co. Kildare for the race, held on a reasonably fast course and notable for having km markers that descend from 5k to the finish. The contingent was led home by Brian O’Kelly (12th in 14:57 and possibly given 1st M40 as the podium featured two of his age category). Brian was followed by Conor Kilkenny (44th in 15:55), Sebastian Hansen (45th in a PB time of 15:57), John Mulvihill (56th in 16:27), Brian Regan (63rd in a PB time of 16:40) and Ciarain Kelly (87th in 16:58).

Further back and nursing a slight injury came Joe McDermott (117th in 17:31) and Joe was followed by Paddy Gaynor (128th in 17:32). Next came Doireann Hughes (202nd and 23rd in 18:46) and she was followed by Rachael Yorke (275th and 33rd in 20:10), Gill Earley (283rd and 38th in 20:20) alongside Miriam Logan (284th and 39th in 20:18), Saketh Ravuluri (293rd in 20:22), Phelim Murray (301st in 20:38), Isabelle Cairns (302nd and 43rd in 20:44), Bex Fleming (313th and 49th in 21:00), Dee Ni Chearbhaill (354th and 65th in 21:45), Eamon Power (407th in 23:35), Paul Campbell (431st in 24:35) along with his daughter Ella (433rd and 107th in 24:19), Michelle English (478th and 130th in 27:40), Carina Davidson (482nd and 133rd in 27:44), Paul E. Kelly (502nd in 29:18) and Helen Finucane (508th and 150th in 29:32).

We had at least 5 Crusaders take part in the 505-strong Roscommon Harriers 10-miler. Again, in warm conditions, Ronan Smith placed 40th in 66:47, followed by Áine Kenny (59th and 10th in 70:56), Triona Quill (96th and 22nd in 75:04), Richard Kavanagh (210th in 85:21) and Kate Murray (384th and 176th in 1:40:00).

In the hills last week, a field of 145 contested the “Not the Wobbly Bridge Rathdrum” 8.5k, organised by IMRA. On a course with a climb of 180m, Gavan O’Doherty was our sole entrant, placing 48th in 46:46.

Onto the parkrun results for this week. Ciara Regan was a first finisher in Poolbeg on Saturday morning, placing 9th overall in 19:27. Ciara was headed by Simon Kenny (6th in 18:52) and then followed in the field of 248 by Tim O’Donnell (15th in 20:54), John Lohan (25th in 22:05), Zlatko Kulic (26th in 22:07), Daniel Littlewood (36th in 22:49), Franky Keane (45th in 23:20), Sharon Woods (52nd and 5th in 23:48), Eamon MacFhionnlaoich (56th in 23:59) and Kabir Sala (60th in 24:02). Kathryn Tomkins found herself on the podium in Gorey, where, in a field of 171, she placed 11th and 3rd in 21:50, whilst, Laura O’Malley placed 20th and 2nd in the 94-strong field in Letterkenny. Saturday marked the preliminary round, with the final to take place in the Morton Stadium on Sunday 9 August, with everyone encouraged either to come and participate or to support.

There is little that is elitist or especially intimidating about the competition, although total novices in a particular event can find themselves competing alongside national and even better standard athletes at times, but it’s also about participating and getting points. As long as you don’t get disqualified then you will score for the club, and you may be surprised, as several found in Tullamore, how many points can be amassed by such novices who took on multiple events.

The competition is divided into club and county teams and we were competing against 15 other clubs, the top 8 places proceeding to the Premier League final in Santry, whilst the bottom 8 would contest the First Division final. The counties were similarly divided up. No athlete can compete in more than 3 events, excluding the relays, and the 3 events can be two track and one field, or two field events and one track. We had several of our 12 men and 9 women multi-tasking on Saturday in order to cover as many of the 20 or so events on offer. The team scores would ultimately be based on the best 16 of the events in which you compete.

So, 17 plucky athletes made the 90 minutes trip to Tullamore, and it was a most enjoyable experience for those of us watching them compete. The sun shone in Tullamore and so did the club!

For the men’s team, the day started really brightly, for, although we had no one in the hammer which started the event rolling, we did have a strong representative in Sean Owens in the 110m hurdles who won his heat by a country mile and on an aggregated time won the event overall, having the lowest time of 14.76 in the 2 heats. In parallel, aspiring decathlete, Alfie Casey, took on the pole vault for the first time, placing 7th overall with a vault of 2m. Next came the 1500m walk and Joe Murphy stepped forward placing 3rd in 9:05.41, having had limited experience but enough not to get disqualified! Joe also took on the 400mH, placing 10th in 73.66 and then, for good measure, the javelin, finishing in 12th place with the 3rd of his 4 throws of 26.33m. He was not done, as he also joined Eoin Carroll, Lucas Ryan and Jack Byrne, running the second leg of the men’s 4 x 400m relay where the team placed 9th overall in 3:37.62.

Eoin, Harry Alexander, Cillian Traynor and Sean had fun taking on the 4 x 100m relay, placing 9th in 46.17. Colm Parnell ran in the 1500m, finishing in 11th spot in 4:09.60, whilst Jack ran in the first heat of the 400m, where he placed 5th in a PB time of 51.38, and 9th overall, whilst Alex Ainsworth made his debut in the men’s 3,000m steeplechase and with aplomb taking 5th spot in an impressive 10:40.59. Eoin ran in the 200m, placing 13th overall after coming home in 5th place in his heat in 24.79, whilst Lucas Ryan ran in the 800m and, in his heat, placing 4th (7th overall) in 1:56.24. Jens Seggewiss ran a steady 17:24.59 for 10th place in the 5000m, whilst Alfie stepped in to run the 100m, taking 13th spot overall (6th in his heat) in 12.10.

Like several others, Cillian was multi-eventing, joining the field in the long jump where he placed 11th with a leap of 4.23m, whilst Alfie participated in his 2nd field event of the day, placing 3rd by overcoming a height of 1.8m, a PB for him in that event. Antonio Santana Otero was another winner on the day. This time it was the shot put and his first put of 17.49m being so far ahead of the field, he felt it disrespectful to continue and was duly the winner of that event. He then took on the discus, a relatively novel experience for him, but he still managed a throw of 35.32m (his 2nd of 4) for 3rd place. Finally, Harry placed 3rd with a leap of 11.63 (his last of 4) in the triple jump. When the smoke had cleared our 184 points were enough to put us in 5th place and meant that we would contest the final of the Premier Division, and everything would be reset, no points being carried over.

The women were back participating in the League after a longer hiatus than the men and with 9 athletes it was harder to compete in as many events as the men, meaning several were not contested. As a consequence, the team placed 11th with 121.5 points, an outstanding result given that the team only participated in 16 events. Hopefully, we can get more athletes out and this can be rectified in the final, where the team will participate in the first division.

Again, as with the men, there was much multi-tasking. The surprise of the day was brand new member, Julia Poradowski, who, having undertaken a decidedly short practice on Thursday in Irishtown stadium, and with limited experience of the event, took on the pole vault, clearing 3 heights (and like Alfie using one of the poles recently donated to the club) and placing 5th in the event, her final vault being 2.15m. It’s super to have the possibility of developing at least two pole vaulters in the club after a gap of at least 10 years. Julia then gamely volunteered to fill the gap in the 3,000m, where she placed 10th in 15:09.72.

Unlike the men, we did have the hammer covered in the women’s team, with Karen Conway placing 3rd with the last of her 4 throws and a distance of 26.97m. Karen went on to compete in the discus and with her first throw (of 4) of 22.32m, she managed to place 4th. Caroline Crowley placed 10th in the 1500m with a time of 5:03.85, whilst Sarah Lyons placed 5th in 2:18.27 in the 800m. Maria Cornado joined the field in the 400m, placing 4th in her heat in 71.80, following that with the weight for distance, where she placed 9th with a throw of 2.5m and capping the day by running in the 4 x 100m relay, where, alongside Elif Eksin, Ada Skrobol and Juliette O’Connor, she contributed to a time of 56.33 for 8th place.

Ada went on to do the high jump, where she placed 8th with a leap of 1.35m, and also the 200m, taking 4th spot in her heat 28.39. Juliette took part in the triple jump, placing 9th with her first leap of two (8.66m), having earlier competed in the long jump where she placed 13th with her 2nd jump (of 4) of 4.19m. Elif ran in the 100m, placing 6th in her heat with 14.61. Finally, Caoilinn Doorley threw the javelin 9.63m (her 3rd of 4 attempts) for 10th place.

Irishtown Stadium hosted a track and field meet on Thursday evening. Men’s vice-captain Charlie Bastow put the event, the Crusaders Summer Meet, together and it went smoothly with some excellent results.

Jade Murphy made her debut in the 400m, placing 3rd in 68.36, followed by Maria in 4th spot with 72.95, marginally slower than her run in the League. Hugo Kirkham placed 4th in the 100m in 12.44, followed by Robert Cervi (5th in 12.97), whilst, in the men’s 400m, Jack ran a PB at the time of 51.41 (improving to 51.38 in the League two days later), with Eoin taking 3rd spot in 54.78. The men’s mile attracted a reasonable field including 5 Crusaders. They were led home by Gerry Cooper (4th in 5:14.66, followed by Cillian (5th in 5:20.57), Phelim Murray (6th in 5:44.72), Myles Nolan (8th in 6:38.61) and Paul E. Kelly (9:05:00). All, but Paul, were running their first proper mile race on the track. Finally, in the field Harry and Robert competed in the long jump with Harry outjumping Robert with his 2nd of 4 leaps (5.44m) to Robert’s 5.09m (his 2nd jump).

Road racing started on Wednesday evening, down in Cork, with the Cork BHAA’s Apple Sport and Social 5k. It attracted a field of 327, among them Ronan Moynihan, who placed 185th in 25:53. Then, on Friday evening we had two runners in the Boyne 5k with a field of 600 runners. Kevin Fitzgibbon placed 5th overall and 1st M40 in 16:25, followed by Sean Brady (148th in 22:20).

On Saturday morning Louise O’Riordan participated in the Cork version of the 5k Grocers Fun Run. In a field of 164, Louise placed 9th and 2nd in 21:27.

Then, on a balmy Saturday evening we had a smaller contingent than in the past head to Dunshaughlin for the iconic 10k there, one of the events in the Peugeot Series of races. Nevertheless, we had reason to cheer as our ladies team came home with first prize in the team competition. The contingent was led home by Kathryn Gibbons who recorded a PB with her time of 38:47 for 158th overall in a field of 1113 finishers and 8th female finisher) and Kathryn was followed by Ollie McGrath (201st in 39:41), Ciara Regan (232nd and 17th in 40:35), Mags Foley (263rd and 22nd in 41:21) and Aoife Quigley (317th and 30th in 43:01) who experienced a couple of interruptions in her run, including a shoe-lace malfunction.

The sun continued to shine on Sunday for the running of the 5-mile national road championships incorporated as usual in the Irish Runner 5-mile race on a tough course in the Phoenix Park. We had at least 16 Crusaders in the field of 1505, including Mikel Crisostomo who placed 59th in an excellent 29:00. Unfortunately, Mikel (along with a few others) had not declared for the National Championships, so his time was not recorded for the team score. A man who enjoys running in warm conditions, TJ Bourke, was next (75th in 29:41) and he was followed by Lucas Huchard (148th in 32:09) and by Isabella Gyori (174th and 16th in 32:30) just ahead of Felipe De Sousa (175th in 32:32). Michael Fitzsimons followed (266th in 34:38), with Sharon Woods following further back (371st and 76th in 36:58) and Dee Ni Chearbhaill (390th and 83rd in 37:35).
