10 Miles High in Trim and Dungarvan

2/2/2026

St. Brigid’s Day and the Bank Holiday weekend was marked by a couple of classic 10-mile road races, the 34th annual running of the John Treacy Dungarvan race as well as that organised by Trim AC. Both enjoy a decent slightly undulating course and both attract quality fields. Indeed, the two races were surprisingly won overall in the same exact time of 48:47. Dungarvan was graced by US Olympian Emily Sisson (who ran in last year's Streets of Galway 8k) who had once again an emphatic win in the women’s race in 53:22, whilst Trim had a pair of Annadale Striders pushing and pulling each along, with the eventual winner, Hannah Gilliland, recording a PB time of 56:43. The weather was kind for the races, the rain having stopped earlier in the day and there was little wind affecting the runners on the country roads. The sun even came out at the end of the race in Dungarvan!

However, as usual, we start with events on the track and in the field. In the Leinster Championships in the NIA on Saturday we had some excellent results.

In the senior men’s 60mH (1.067m), Sean Owens took the silver medal in a time of 8.22. Then, in the 60m heats, in heat 1 Charlie Bastow placed 5th in 7.31 followed by Saad Ashraf in 5th with a time of 7.36. Unfortunately, neither progressed to the final. Luke Timlin ran in heat 3 where he placed 2nd in 6.98 to qualify, but then withdrew before the final. In the masters 60m sprint, sprint coach Steven Colvert distinguished himself with a PB in winning the gold medal in the M35 division in a time of 7.26, whilst Mick McDermott was the only competitor in the M50 category, completing the distance in 8.28.

In the senior men’s 200m, Charlie, one of the club’s vice captains, won his heat (3rd of 4) in 22.83, going on to win the silver medal in the final in a time of 22.65 in a photo finish for 2nd and 3rd spots. In both races Charlie was running in lane 6. Running in lane 4, Mick McDermott placed 2nd in a two-horse race in the M50 200m sprint in a time of 27.63.

Karl Fitzmaurice took 5th spot in 2:19.94 in the M50 category in the 800m, whilst Harry Moylan took the bronze medal in the U20 shot put, with his first throw of 6 attempts of 13.03m.

Members may be interested to read that Emily Lyne, who now runs for UCD, won the senior women’s 200m race in 25.02, running in lane 5. Further afield, one of our Spanish exiles, Cristian Vilchez Ceballos ran in a 1500m track race, where he placed 3rd in a time of 4:22.62.

Back to road racing and we had at least 17 runners in Dungarvan with a field of nearly 3000 and they were led home by Brendan Murphy in 51st spot in a time of 57:13. Brendan was followed by Ciarain Kelly with a satisfying 57:41 for 56th place and then by Rob Cross (109th in 60:09). Joe McDermott was next, placing 141st in 61:20, and he was followed by Niall Fitzgerald (231st in 63:16) and Kevin (Billy) O’Sullivan (350th in 65:58). Next across the line came our first female finisher, Emma Noonan  (437th overall and 44th female finisher in 67:48 just ahead of Gill Earley, who also recorded a solid time of 68:26 for 464th overall and 49th female places. They were followed by Miriam Logan (579th and 71st in 70:25). Miriam finished ahead of Ryan Preston (704th in 72:46) and Eddie Nugent (710th in 73:04), whose calf tightened after 10k and who then had to walk for large parts thereafter. Slightly further back came David O’Donnell (798th in a PB time of 73:15) ahead of Dee Ni Chearbhaill (845th and 132nd in 74:36), Rebecca Fleming (1032nd and 172nd in 77:02), Tony Hackett (1263rd in 79:28), Chris Bannon (1305th in 79:54) and Fiona Bane (2278th and 713th in 93:33). In terms of team results, our women’s team of Gill, Miriam and Dee placed 9th out of 47, whilst the men’s team of Brendan, Ciarain and Joe also placed 9th in a competition involving 64.

Trim enjoyed a field of nearly 1900 runners, at least 11 from Crusaders. The first 3 runners home each recorded PBs on the course, with Dee Lawlor being our first man across the line (47th in 57:47), just before running in the Donadea 50k. Recent new member Aoife Cleary demonstrated quality running, placing 62nd and 4th in her first ever 10-miler in a super time of 58:49, whilst she prepares for the Milan marathon in April. Next came Kenan Furlong, agonisingly close to breaking the hour mark (105th in a PB time of 60:05), which means he’ll be back for more!

Kieran Martin was next, placing 163rd in 62:36, followed by John O’Donnell, another man preparing for ultra running but later in the Spring, and he was followed by Kathryn Gibbons who ran well for 231st and 26th in 65:00. Kathryn was followed by Phelim Murray, who unfortunately brought his wife’s much smaller singlet to the race by mistake and then at the last minute had to borrow one of the race’s commemorative shirts from John O’Donnell. The stress of the situation seemed to have no negative effect on Phelim and he ran a decent time of 69:37 for 409th spot. Aoife Quigley was next, placing 484th and 69th in 71:30, and she was followed by Louise O’Riordan (547th and 87th in 72:40), Liz Nixon, in training for the London marathon (850th and 197th in 78:48), and Kate Murray (1184th and 352nd in 86:40. Our women's team placed 5th in a competition involving 77 teams, whilst the men placed 19th in a 100-strong contest.

IMRA organised the annual Howth Winter race on Saturday morning. On a course measuring 7.35k and with a climb of 222m, Becky Quinn won the women’s element in a time of 36:35 and placing 14th overall in a field of 131 athletes.

The amount of flooding that Dublin experienced last week definitely had an impact on numbers in the local parkruns, with some losing out and others gaining, based on the likely size of the puddles on the courses and, overall, numbers balanced out. Apart from the significant amount of lakes and puddles around the place, the conditions for running on Saturday morning were otherwise good.

As usual, we had a decent share of first finishers and podium places around the country.

Ciara Regan ran once again in Tubbercurry, where she led the entire field of 88 home in a time of 20:21. Then, in New Ross, Isabelle Cairns, testing out a troublesome hamstring, placed 15th and 1st in 25:20 alongside 109 other runners, whilst, closer to home, Felipe De Sousa also headed the field, measuring 69, in Tolka Valley Park with a time of 19:30. Then, Áine Kenny took 7th and 1st spots in a time of 22:37 in a field of 63 in Mountbellew Forest.

With several of our members preparing for the following day’s 10-mile races, it was great to see a good few of them in Poolbeg, where, in a time of 22:24, Jade Murphy placed 38th and 1st in a field of 219, on an extremely wet and redefined course. Despite the removal of the Irishtown Nature Reserve hill because of the lake at its base, this did not prevent runners from getting totally soaked in the puddles on the paths around Seán Moore Park. If they avoided the puddles, then they ended up in a slippery mudbath. John Mulvihill also had a good outing, exchanging the lead throughout and eventually placing 2nd in 17:04. John was followed by Gerry Cooper who placed 5th in 18:25 and he was followed by Jan Manschot (7th in 19:00), Simon Catteau (9th in 20:28), Conor Kilkenny (16th in 20:28) and Donal O’Malley (18th in 20:44). Further back, in his first parkrun and coming back from a long-term injury, John Healy placed 23rd in 21:05 alongside Mikel Crisostomo (24th in 21:06) who was pacing the 21 minutes runners and they were followed by Piarais Neary (25th in 21:15), Jade, with Saketh Ravuluri alongside (39th in the same time of 22:24).

Josie Ward was next, placing 67th and 6th in 24:12, ahead of new member Mustaf Ahmed (73rd in 24:54), Kenan Furlong (75th in 25:15) and James Cottle, another runner trying to come back from a long injury (78th in 25:23). Louise O’Riordan (109th and 18th in 27:34) was our next runner home, followed by Ellen Walsh (118th and 20th in 28:02), Kelly Brown (123rd and 21st in 28:39) alongside her father Neil who was pacing the 29 minutes runners (124th in the same time), Siobhan Russell (154th and 36th in 31:42) and Marie-Claire Daly (176th and 48th in 32:49).

Kev Moore and Mary Donnelly ran in an even more submerged parkrun in Bushy Park, where the course was so waterlogged it was hard to see the banks of the pond there. In a field of 143, Kev placed 16th in 22:57, with Mary in 32nd and 3rd in 25:07. Meanwhile, we had several runners in Shanganagh celebrating Lisa Shine’s 400th parkrun. In a field of 297, Aoife McCarthy placed 38th and 3rd in 23:14, and she was followed by Darina Scully (112th and 17th in 26:34), Carina Davidson (177th and 35th in 29:06), Mairead Cashman (268th and 87th in 36:21), Máirín Shine (269th and 88th in the same time), Lisa (282nd and (appropriately!) 100th in 39:49), just ahead of Fiona Shine and buggy (283rd and 101st in 39:51) and Emer Kenny (284th and 102nd in 39:52).

Kabir Sala also finished on the podium, this time in Father Collins Park. Alongside 152 other runners he placed 3rd in 19:54, ahead of Bo Chicoine who ran 27:44 for 76th spot. Dave Carter joined a field of 204 in Cabinteely, where he placed 6th in 20:56, whilst in Brickfields in a field 114-strong, Charles-Edouard Cattier took 5th place in 20:18. Jim Stagg placed 5th in 18:35 in a field of 261 in Killarney House, whilst Fanny Trébouet ran in Westport alongside 87 other runners, finishing in 58th and 18th places in 29:32. Ryan Hoey joined a field of 243 in Donabate where he placed 60th in 25:27, whilst, in St. Anne’s, with its field of 468, Paul F. Kelly ran 26:54 for 170th spot, followed by Oisin Corish (219th in 28:23).

Down in Cork, Cian Coughlan placed 9th in a field of 300 and in a time of 20:07, whilst in Ballincollig, Helena O’Keeffe ran alongside 344 other runners, placing 155th and 30th in 27:06. Then, on Bere Island, with a field of 56, Ailish Hassett placed 40th and 21st in 41:02.

Further afield, on a trip to Japan, Olwyn Dunne ran in the Shingashigawa Ukima parkrun in Tokyo, where in a field of 35 she placed 21st and 3rd in 25:12, whilst Michael O’Shea ran in Prices, Liverpool, where, in a field of 767, he placed 134th in 24:11. In Glasgow, Aidan Hudner ran once again in Pollok, where, in a field of 423, he placed 46th in 23:23. Finally, down in Australia, two of our exiles ran in parkruns. Kris Ryan ran once again in Paradise Point where, in a field of 152, she placed 152nd and 31st in 27:06, and Christina Campbell ran in Galup Reserve, where, in a field of 509, she placed 137th and 18th in 24:40.
