We are pleased to report that the weekend started with a BHAA XC race that took place on private land, so that it did not run the risk of being cancelled. The race was the Ledwith Construction mixed 6k, started by Val Ledwith himself with the use of a shotgun and conducted on 3 loops of a large field that bore all the evidence of having recently been vacated by a large herd of cattle. There was enough mud to satisfy everyone along with a few cow pats!
The field was unfortunately not excessive at 79 and we had only two members of the club take part. Steve Michel placed 7th in a time of 25:13, followed by Brendan Glynn (73rd in 38:14). Also, on Saturday, we had 3 runners in the Clane 10k, on a really decent fast road course. In a field of 287, Kathryn Gibbons placed 30th overall and 2nd female finisher in a great PB time of 38:56, breaking 39 minutes for the first time. Kathryn was followed by solid runs coming from Emma Rowe (44th and 4th in 39:56) and from Charlie Coonan (54th in 41:39). There were two races in the Dublin and Wicklow Mountains on Saturday morning, both supporting the mountain rescue effort. On the 13k short course involving 687 runners, Conor MacGuinness placed 15th in 63:00, followed by Áine Kenny who placed 81st and 13th in 73:55. Then, on the long course of 26k, we had at least 3 runners take part in the field of 492. Gavan Doherty placed 174th in 2:56:43, followed by Lisa Branigan (277th and 35th in 3:15:52) and Kevin Kenny (468th in 4:20:38). On Sunday, Kevin “Billy” O’Sullivan joined 341 other participants down in Fermoy in Co. Cork, where he placed 48th in the 4-mile Great Glenville Run in a time of 25:38. Also, on Sunday, the first race of four (taking place over 4 consecutive days\0 took place in the annual International Running Challenge hosted by Club la Santa in Lanzarote. The first race is always the 10k, which generally measures slightly short at 9.8k, and this year was conducted in quite warm temperatures and a strong easterly wind on the circular course with its 3 loops, involving a descent with the wind behind runners and a climb into the wind to finish the loop. Alex Ainsworth, in his first time running the 10k there, actually won it outright in a great time of 33:19. He was followed, in the field of 392, by Eugene McDonough (30th in 39:32), Simon Everard (39th in 40:28), Sean Savage (44th in 41:05), Eddie Nugent (74th in 43:31), Phelim Murray (80th in 44:06), Ciara Lynch (102nd, 14th and 3rd in her age category in 46:15), David O’Donnell (103rd in 46:17), Tim O’Donnell (105t in 46:23), Philip Matthews (118th in 46:55) and Dee Ni Chearbhaill (165th and 32nd in 50:14). Not everyone will compete in all four races and we will record the progress of those who do as well as those who only join in for the odd race. Also abroad, Esther Requena Ferri and Cristian Ceballos Vilchez ran in the Velez-Malaga 10k on Sunday where Esther placed 2nd in the women’s race in 39:00 and Cristian placed 3rd overall in 34:29. Another of our Spanish exiles, Pablo Sanchez, was in action on Saturday, where he ran a 1500m on the track in 4:21 placing 2nd with his club in the Madrid-based competition. Then, on Sunday, Alessandro Nappi, one of our Italian exiles, ran in the Milan Half marathon which completed in 1:45:13. We had lots of runners take part in Saturday morning’s parkruns. Aoife Quigley ran in Tramore Valley in Cork where she placed12th overall and first female finisher in a time of 19:56 in a field of 232. Then in the recently-established Broadmeadow Linear parkrun we had at least 6 Crusaders taking part in the field of 72. Aoife McCarthy placed 11th and 1st in 23:41.
