Back row L-R: Oisin Browne, Kevin Kavanagh, Thomas Vogée, Timothy Bowen, Tim Conway, Patrick Conlon, Phelim Murray, Karl Walsh. Kneeling L-R: Michael O'Shea, Derek Boland, John Mulvihill, Eddie Nugent, Pablo Monteagudo'Lago We had masses of runners racing this weekend, with several taking part in the truly muddy, cold and wet National Novices cross-country championships in Abbotstown on a rainy Sunday afternoon and also a huge bunch running in the Phoenix Park on Saturday morning in the Jingle Bells 5k. We start with the National Novices adult races, involving 3 runners taking part in the women’s race, not quite enough to make a team, and then 14 finishers in the men’s race that took place afterwards. By all accounts it was a mud-bath with standing water in places on what is usually a well-drained purpose-built course. The first race was the women’s 4k, held on two separate loops, one of 1000m and another of 1500m which was run on twice. The longer run involved a hill, likely to have been extremely muddy. Our small contingent was led home by ladies’ club captain Sarah Lyons in the field of 131. Sarah placed 90th in 19:08 and she was followed closely by Jade Murphy (94th in 19:21) and then by Tilde Martinsen (127th in 21:00). The 6k men’s race involved 4 of the longer 1500m loops, with conditions underfoot likely to have been truly churned up, having had juvenile races take place on the course earlier in the day. Our men’s team of John Mulvihill (52nd in 23:26), newcomer Tim Conway (55th in 23:29), Pablo Monteagudo’Lago (72nd in 23:49) and Conor Kilkenny (76th in 23:53) placed 9th out of 25 club teams in the field of 219 runners. Conor was followed by Thomas Vogée (114th in 25:02), another newcomer Timothy Bowen (144th in 25:54), Kevin Kavanagh (146th in 25:56), Patrick Conlon (151st in 26:05), Derek Boland (156th in 26:20), another new member Michael O’Shea (184th in 27:53), Eddie Nugent (192nd in 28:25), Oisin Browne (195th in 28:39), Karl Walsh (216th in 33:04) and men’s club captain Phelim Murray (217th in 33:51). Well done to our intrepid runners! The annual running of the Donore Harriers-organised Jingle Bells 5k Run took place on Saturday morning in the Phoenix Park in dry but windy conditions and a field larger than ever. It has been growing exponentially since 2022 when it enjoyed a field of just over 1200 and last year the field was just under 1350. This year 1913 athletes finished the race. It’s a potential PB event with a net downhill course and an extremely fast last two kilometres off the ordnance Survey Road and down the Upper Glen Road to a slightly uphill finish below St. Mary’s hospital, although, weirdly, and perhaps because of the crowded start and maybe the windy conditions, although everyone gets good times and some recording PBs, it can prove challenging and slightly frustrating for others to improve on times achieved on otherwise fast courses. It was incredible to see how many runners crossed the line together around the 18-minute mark (at least 200 broke that time). Indeed, well over 500 runners (nearly 30% of the field) broke 20 minutes for the distance (including at least 32 of our athletes). Nevertheless, it’s an iconic event (with the traditional mug as your prize) and well-organised. We had an enormous turnout for the race, helped by the exchange process which may become more of a feature in races to come, although one or two chose not to avail of it and not everyone recorded Crusaders as their club. The latest count had us with at least 78 runners, led home by Brian O’Kelly in 9th spot in a PB equalling time (from 2019) of 14:39 and winning his M40 age category. Brian was followed home by Marc Geraghty (with a PB time of 15:36 for 30th spot) and Alex Ainsworth (33rd in 15:40). Further back came Stephen Hurley (87th in 16:38), with Enda Clarke a little further behind (117th in 17:01). Rob Cross was next (141st in 17:23), followed by our first female finisher, recently returned from injury. Charlotte Myers placed 142nd overall and 15th female finisher in 17:26 and she led Sarah-Grace Breen (181st and 20th in a PB time of 17:36, paced by Kevin Kavanagh (182nd in 17:37)) and Annie Hughes (204th and 23rd in 17:53) to third place in the club women’s team competition. Mikel Crisostomo placed 164th in 17:31, followed by Shane Egan (177th in 17:32), and then after Charlotte and Kevin came Tommy Allen whose place was unfortunately not recorded because of a missing bib (17:37), John McDonagh (196th in 17:44) just ahead of Jan Manschot (197th in 17:45). After Annie, came Doireann Hughes, coming back into strong form (220th and 28th in 18:02), followed by Paddy Gaynor (255th in a PB time of 18:12), Caroline Crowley, another runner coming back into form (258th and 35th in 18:24), James Sherry (285th in 18:29) just ahead of Felipe De Sousa (286th in 18:33), with a little further back, Peter Beddy (316th in 18:40). Caroline’s husband, Eoghan Corrigan recorded a massive PB, placing 323rd in 18:50, and he was followed by Gerard White (326th in 18:43), Kathryn Gibbons (374th and 62nd in 18:59), Saketh Ravuluri (390th in 19:05) and Ciara Regan (419th and 73rd in a PB time of 19:16). Mags Foley was next (440th and 80th in 19:23), followed by Ronan Walsh (483rd in 19:17), Tim O’Donnell (494th in 19:40), Phelim Murray (498th in 19:51), Paul Campbell (561st in 20:19), Ryan Preston (579th in 20:30) and Warren Swords (592nd in 19:16) who set off at the back of the field. Gill Earley was next across the line (597th and 110th in 20:34), followed by David O’Donnell (616th in the same time as Gill), Kabir Sala (619th in 19:45), Miriam Logan (627th and 121st in 20:42), Ciara Lynch (636th and 124th in 20:47) ahead of Louise O’Riordan, a runner who surprised herself with a PB (648th and 128th in 20:53). Noel Carr was the next runner to finish (656th in 21:17) and he was followed by Franky Keane (695th in 21:18), Emily Glen (709th and 154th in 21:24), Dee Ni Chearbhaill (732nd and 165th in 21:34), Rachael Yorke in her first competitive run since recent maternity (789th and 196th in 21:53), Luz Estevan (812th and 207th in 21:21), Claire Reidy, another runner to record a PB (840th and 222nd in 21:16), just ahead of Gavan Doherty (844th in 21:30), Luke Haran (866th in 21:54), Patricia Velasquez (868th and 230th in a PB time of 22:09), Imogen Guinness (871st and 232nd in 22:39), Ryan Hoey (876th in 22:46), Orla O’Neill (889th and 240th in 22:24), ahead of Hannah Jones (944th and 264th in 22:40). Sean Brady crossed the line in 950th place (22:42) and he was followed by Chris Bannon (953rd in 23:35), Tanja Narancic (981st and 281st in 23:20) alongside Joanne Carey (982nd and 282nd in the same time), Ambrose Carr (90th in 23:29), Mark Browne (1023rd in 24:15), James Moran (1026th in 23:05), Susan Clarke (1055th and 320th in 23:44), Brendan Glynn (1085th in 25:15), Alan Martin (1101st in 24:07), Kevin Kenny (1110th in 24:18), Paula Nolan (1128thand 354th in 24:25), Laura O’Malley (1153rd and 369th in 24:42), Aitor Arribas Velasco (1168th in 24:54), Darina Scully (1182nd and 384th in 25:30), Andres Mino (1230th in 25:18), Fanny Trébouet (1264th and 433rd in 26:16), Gabriela Segura (1311th and 466th in 26:41), Lorraine McMahon (1328th and 477th in a PB time of 26:39), Carina Davidson (1332nd and 481st in 27:29), Orla McTernan, who only recently started running in her early 50s and who recorded a creditable PB time of 28:08 (1393rd and 521st), Bo Chicoine (1588th in 30:04), Paul E. Kelly (1625th in 30:48) and Maureen McGinley (1642nd and 709th in 31:51). Marie-Claire Daly also ran, placing 1698th overall and 755th female finisher in 33:00. Well done to all! Ronan Moynihan ran in the Newmarket Classic 5k race in Co. Cork on Sunday. He recorded a time of 18:48 for 135th place based on guntime (likely 18:32 net) in a fast race involving 714 runners, 215 of whom broke 20 minutes. We had at least 8 runners taking part in the Valencia marathon on Sunday morning. With an early start, the conditions were not too warm early on and two of our runners were able to finish before the temperature climbed above 16 degrees Celsius with only a mild breeze. However, for the later finishers, they had to deal with temperatures climbing to 21 degrees, a real challenge on an otherwise fast and flat course. The squad were led home by Seb Hansen and Kevin Fitzgibbon, who both ran almost metronomical 5k splits for large chunks of the race, each with negative splits overall (about 1 minute for Sebastian and nearly 2.5 minutes for Kevin). Both recorded superb PBs, Seb running 2:33:48 and Kevin about 400m behind him in 2:34:47. They were followed by Joe Walsh (2:49:18), a great result for him and then by Gerard Moore who recorded a super PB time of 3:07:19. Further back came John Lohan, who only began training for the event in the last month (3:42:50). Barry O’Neill and David Pepper found the second half with its increasing temperatures quite challenging, with Barry running 4:23:38 and David finishing in 4:42:50. Tara Murphy completed the contingent with a time of 4:46:54. One of our London exiles, Louise Lancaster (née Vanwildermeersch) also ran, recording a time of 3:40. Further afield, Anna Hoesl, one of our German exiles, ran in Ismaning in Germany in a 13k trail race, which she completed in 55:40, whilst Kate O’Malley, one of our London exiles, ran in the Run Through 10k in Battersea Park, where she took 3rd place in the women’s race in a time of 38:28. Meanwhile, one of our French exiles, Raphael Crueyze, ran a 10k in Thiais in south-east Paris, placing 124th in a field of nearly 2200, in a time of 37:03. Conor MacGuinness ran in the Cayman Islands Half marathon on Sunday where he placed 3rd in his age category in a time of 95:38. Meanwhile, two of our Spanish exiles ran in the 13.4k trail run held in Ardales in Spain. Esther Requena Ferri won the women’s race in 60:02, whilst her partner Cristian Vilchez Ceballos ran 55:00 for the distance. With the Jingle Bells Run taking place at the same time and also several runners holding themselves back for the National Novices XC on Sunday, there were fewer crusaders in local parkruns on Saturday morning. We did have a few podium finishes, all the same. Kate Murray joined a field of 95 in Lough Key, where she placed 14th and first female finisher in 25:48, whilst, amazingly, Cristian Vilchez Ceballos ran in Braunstone in Leicester the day before his trail race in Ardales ,heading the entire field of 221 in the parkrun with a time of 17:44. Mary Donnelly placed 24th and 2nd in Bushy Park. In the field of 152 Daniel Lowe placed 9th in 21:13, followed by Mary and also Kev Moore (37th in 23:53). As usual, we had the largest turnout in Poolbeg, where Aoife McCarthy placed 49th and 3rd in a field of 184 and a time of 24:10. Aoife was preceded by Kenan Furlong (4th in 18:07), Michael Wycherley (5th in 18:20), Ross Neill (10th in 19:11) and Dale Whelehan (38th in 22:59). Conor Kilkenny (55th in 24:22) was next, followed by Charles Cartledge (69th in 25:29), Juliane Frydenlund (78th and 12th in 26:00), Russell Murphy (93rd in 26:57), Iseult Ni Chuinneagain (106th and 25th in 28:08), Aisling O’Riordan (121st and 34th in 29:00), Una McCullagh (143rd and 47th in 30:56), Djinn Von Noorden (and her dog) (147th and 51st in 31:28), Cynthia Perucca (154th and 54th in 32:42), with Emily Ashford tailwalking. Alby Allan led home a decent sized contingent from the club, placing 3rd in the 236-strong field in Shanganagh. Alby’s time was 19:21 and he was followed by Gareth Phelan (17th in 21:32), Orlaith de Burca (153rd and 39th in 30:06, with Máirín, Lisa and Fiona Shine tailwalking. Olwyn Dunne enjoyed a trip to Kerry, placing 6th and 2nd in 27:54 in a modest field of 26 on Inch Beach, an event entirely run on sand. Áine Kenny headed to Cardiff where she placed 60th and 5th in a field of 521 with a time of 521, whilst Ellen Walsh continues to run in Haga in Sweden where she placed 47th and 9th in 30:20 in a field of 69. Maria Kennedy ran 29:17 for 55th and 12th in 29:17 in a field of 123 in Kilkenny. Mairead Cashman ran once again in Glen River alongside 56 other runners, where she placed 44th and 21st in 32:28, whilst Georgina Loughrey headed to Ormeau Park in Belfast where, in a field of 495, she placed 228th and 51st in 28:21. Finally, two of our London exiles, Jeanie Watson and Thom Martini ran there on Saturday morning. Jeanie joined 606 other runners in Finsbury Park, placing 85th and 11th in 22:48, whilst Thom placed 531st in a field of 578 in Gunnersbury, running 37:59. As usual, please let us know if any results are incorrect or are missing. Thanks! Jingle Bells 5k (1913) Overall place Name Cat.
