There was no shelter anywhere and everyone got drenched in the Phoenix Park on Sunday morning for the annual Irish Runner 10-mile road race, incorporating the national championships. Otherwise, nearly all the events covered in this report were blessed with drier conditions.
We start with a result on the track from Monday evening, down in Cork, where Aoife Quigley took part in the Cork Athletics graded meet 5000m, which she completed in 19:32.06 for 4th place. Then, on Wednesday evening, in Lucan, we had two athletes compete in the 7th meet in the Dublin graded series. In an eventful week for her, Annie Hughes placed 6th in 2:20.04 in heat 1 of the women’s grade A 800m, whilst Alex Ainsworth took part in his first ever 3000m on the track, placing 7th in 8:57.19 in the A grade race. Over the weekend we had several athletes take part in the AAI Games down in Co. Carlow. On the first day of the meet, Sean Owens won the first series of the 110mH (0.991m) in 14.28, improving on the second day, winning in 14.04 in the second series. In heat 2 of the men’s 200m, Luc Culliton placed 4th in 22.88, whilst, in heat 5 of the women’s 200m, Juliette McCloskey placed 5th in 27.92. There were a few races on the second day, with several heats and two series of the men’s 100m. In the first heat of the first series, Cillian Doherty placed 4th in 10.93, whilst, in the second heat, Sean Owens continued his winning streak, placing 1st in 10.80, followed by Charlie Bastow (4th in 11.26). Luc placed 4th in heat 5 in 11.75. In the second series, Sean had to accept 2nd place in 10.67 in the first heat, whilst in heat 2, Charlie placed 4th in 11.12. Colm Parnell placed 9th in the men’s 1500m in a time of 4:04.46, whilst in the women’s 400mH (0.762m), Emily Lyne placed 2nd in 61.67. Finally, Eva Griffin competed in the women’s 400m, where she placed 5th in 59.92. There was another race in the BHAA summer league on Thursday evening. On the same course as the Poolbeg parkrun, 167 runners competed in the Dublin City Council 5k. We had at least 8 athletes in the race, led home by Joe Walsh (9th overall and 1st M45 in 17:45), just ahead of Karl Walsh (15th and 3rd M45 in 18:32). They were followed by Ciara Regan who placed 27th overall and 2nd female finisher in 19:37. As mentioned above, the national 10-mile championships on Sunday morning were held in extremely wet conditions, thankfully with little to no wind and quite mild temperatures. On the hilly and challenging course, taking in most of the west side of the park as well as a trip along Conyngham Road on the outside of the park, we had at least 24 runners in the field of more than 1800 finishers.
