![]() Apart from a couple of races outside of Ireland, all our results this week appear to be based on guntime, indoors and out. We start with the National Indoor AAI Games at the National Indoor Arena in Abbotstown that took place on Saturday. Steven Colvert’s senior male sprinters were in action for the 60m and 60mH and acquitted themselves well. On the first day of the two day meet, there were 7 heats of the 60m sprint, and, as a club, we featured in 5 of them. Luke Timlin and Charlie Bastow won their respective heats. In heat 3 Luke ran 7.08 for the win, whilst, running in heat 5, Charlie ran 7.24 for his win. In between, Dan Sheridan placed 7th in heat 4 in a time of 8.15, whilst, earlier in the session, Cillian Doherty ran 7.21 for 7th place in his seeded heat 2 race. Running in heat 4, Dan Sheridan also placed 7th in 8.15. On the same day the athletes participated in a second series. This time there were 6 heats. Luke placed 3rd in the second heat in 7.01 (an improvement of 7/100 of a second), whilst Cillian Doherty and Charlie Bastow ran alongside each other in heat 3. Cillian placed 2nd in 7.13, with Charlie just behind in 3rd in 7.20. Both runners also improved their times. Finally, Viktor Michalak placed 6th in 8.24 in heat 6. There were also 2 series of races for the men’s senior 60mH conducted over hurdles of 1.067m. There was one heat per series and in the first race Valentinos Goularas placed 2nd in 8.02, in a photo finish for 1st place. Sean Owens finished just behind Val in 3rd place with a time of 8.06. Then, in the 2nd race, which Val won in a time of 8.03, Sean placed 6th in 8.95. What a brilliant morning 27 of our female club-mates had in Tibradden up alongside the DSD track on Sunday! DSD hosted the latest round of the women’s Meet and Train 2-mile winter XC league and the event did not disappoint. This was the first trial of a cross-country course that started on the flat on a field to the side of the track, wending its way up to a berm on the other side and then down into a field where a copse of new trees had been planted. Runners had to go round the fenced-in copse two times and then return to the start line, climbing a really steep hill on the berm that they had come down on the way out, but this time with tired legs. It was an excellent and challenging course, with a bit of fresh mud laid out in one corner just before the return up the steep hill. It was also conducted in relatively mild conditions with little wind in the sunshine. The first three athletes across the line hailed from DSD, possibly with 6 from the club in the top 8. They were apparently mortified that people might think that the race had been fixed! One suspects that a bit of local knowledge may certainly have helped! Our teams were led home by Luz Estevan who continues to go from strength to strength, placing 11th in the largest field to date of 172, well exceeding the previous record established in Poolbeg last year when the event was hosted by Crusaders. Luz was followed by Dee Ni Chearbhaill who worked her way steadily through the field (27th) and then by Tilde Martinsen (32nd), Louise O’Riordan (36th) and Cría Dowling (41st). Cría was followed by Ciara Hutchinson (45th) and Darina Scully (49th). A little further back came Kate Murray (57th), followed closely by Emer Kenny (58th) and Fiona Shine (62nd), with Laura O’Malley, Ellen Walsh and Anna Brown, a little further back (69th, 70th and 71st, respectively). A day after her epic marathon, Olwyn Dunne used the race as a recovery(!) run, placing 81st, followed by Ailish Hassett (94th) and then the contingent was completed by Emma O’Mahony (103rd), Anna Hernick (104th), Lisa Shine (108th), Carina Davidson (114th), Anna Shine (129th), Lorraine McMahon (136th), Michelle English (148th), Máirín Shine (141st), Mairead Cashman (167th), Marie-Claire Daly (168th), Cynthia Perucca (169th) and Niamh Trihy (172nd), ably guided by Kevin Kenny. Full details of the race have yet to be provided, including the name of the winner, times run and team positions after this, the second round of the winter league. Once they are provided, the report will be updated. The day before, several of our athletes competed in the rather grandiosely-named World Half Marathon Festival that took place on the familiar terrain of Donadea Forest. In fact, although it was entitled a half marathon festival, there was actually a marathon held as part of the series of events that were organised over both days of the weekend. Olwyn Dunne took part in the marathon, her 58th (deliberately matching her age) and she ran it well, placing 28th overall in a field of 55, 4th female finisher and 2nd in her F55 age category, in a super time of 3:58:27. We then had runners in the two half marathons organised on Saturday morning. Mags Foley and Eoghan Kerins ran in the first, held at 9:30 in the morning, with Mags taking 2nd place in the women’s race, 13th overall in a field of 198, in a time of 94:40. Just behind her came Eoghan (16th in 97:05), placing 3rd M40. The later race, starting at noon, and comprising a field of 117, saw Kathryn Gibbons and Karl Walsh competing. Kathryn won the women’s race, placing 4th overall in a time of 89:26, followed by Karl who placed 20th in 1:42:25. Many congrats to all. Then, on Sunday, we had another successfully-run XC race organised by the BHAA. This was the annual visit to an old familiar course of 4 laps around the fields of Tymon Park for the Bank of Ireland Combined 6k race. The women’s race was won by Clare Sullivan in a time of 24:55 and she placed 26th overall. Ahead of her came Joe Walsh who placed 15th in 23:28, and then Clare was followed by Karl Walsh (29th in 24:59), Tomás Bradley (36th in 25:36), Sean Murphy (41st in 26:13), Irene Gorman (48th and 5th in 27:09), David O’Donnell (59th in 27:56), Robbie Moore (70th in 28:29) and Tony Hackett (78th in 28:59). Further afield over the weekend, our middle-eastern exile, John Cunnane, took part in the Dubai marathon which he completed in an excellent 3:41, whilst, near Munich in Germany, Anna Hoesl ran in the Ismaning Winterrun 16.75km which she completed in a super 73 minutes. Saturday morning’s parkruns were well attended as to be expected, with the general improvement in the weather. Readers will notice that several of those competing in Sunday’s WM&T XC also prepared themselves for the contest with a shakeout in the Parkruns. Again, we were able to record at least two first finishers. One was in Poolbeg, where Emma Rowe placed 10th overall and first female finisher in a time of 20:03. Emma was joined in the field of 274 by at least 23 club members, including Ross Neill who placed 3rd in 18:20. Ross was followed by Zlatko Kulic (8th in 19:50), Adrian Groarke (12th in 20:13), Ryan Preston (21st in 21:05), Piarais Neary (24th in 21:12), Michael Fitzsimons (29th in 21:33), Kabir Sala (34th in 21:59) and John Lohan (40th in 22:20). Further back came Kevin Lambe (64th in 23:35) and then Josie Ward (86th and 15th in 24:23) who was followed by Tom Donohoe (96th in 24:42), Paul Campbell (106th in 25:09), Emily Glen (108th and 25th in 25:23) just ahead of Louise O’Riordan (109th and 26th in 25:29) and Russell Murphy (112th in 25:35). Next across the line came Luke Clarke (117th in 25:44), followed by Franky Keane (124th in 26:02), Ellen Walsh (138th and 37th in 26:45), Tara Murphy (149th and 44th in 27:07), Lisa Branigan (162nd and 49th in 27:44), Tanja Narancic, as part of a long run (219th and 87th in 30:03), Cynthis Perucca (253rd and 105th in 35:00) and Maureen McGinley, tailwalking. The other first finisher was Dee Lawlor who headed the field of 176 in Cabinteely. Dee recorded a time of 18:29. We had some more podium places spread over the parkruns. Along with 4 other members of the club, Rebecca Fleming was part of a field of 248 in the Royal Canal parkrun in Kilcock, where she placed 22nd and 2nd in 21:48. Ahead of her came Cian Coughlan (7th in 19:37) and Phelim Murray (16th in 21:02), and she was followed home by Emer Kenny (57th and 10th in 25;27) and Áine Crotty (158th and 62nd in 32:25). Then, in Shanganagh, Mary Donnelly placed 28th and 3rd in 21:39 in a field of 263 that included Kev Moore (13th in 19:51) and Jill Nason (198th and 68th in 30:30). In a time of 24:26 Laura O’Malley took 13th and 4th slots in Tolka Valley alongside 70 other runners who included Maria Pertl (50th and 20th in 31:39). Meanwhile, Peter O’Toole placed 5th in a time of 18:29 in the 596-strong field in St. Anne’s. Peter was followed by newcomer James Sherry who placed 18th in 19:46. There was a good turnout in Fairview with 213 runners in total. Among them were Felipe De Sousa who placed 7th in 19:50, followed by Garret Connolly (147th in 31:36), Fiona Shine (170th and 45th in 33:00) and Máirín Shine (171st and 46th in 33:08) alongside her daughter Lisa (172nd and 47th in the same time). We had 3 runners in the field of 115 in Brickfields with Eoghan Corrigan pushing his double buggy (24th in 24:07), Kate Murray (38th and 10th in 26:30) and Mairead Cashman (69th and 22nd in 30:46). Karl Walsh joined 266 other participants in Naas again, where he placed 26th in 21:21, whilst Martina White took 96th and 31st places in Porterstown in a time of 32:39. The field there measured 147. We had 2 runners in Marlay Park, where Phil Sykes ran 24:43 for 120th spot, followed by Barry O’Neill (156th in 25:48), in a field of 507. Chris Bannon returned from long-term injury to place 152nd in 30:39 in the 230-strong field in Bushy Park, whilst Paul and Aoife Kelly ran once again in Poppintree. In the field of 184, Paul placed 43rd in 24:16, followed by Aoife who placed 106th and 26th in 30:57. Darina Scully pushed her buggy round River Valley Park in a time of 30:28 for 64th and 18th places alongside 122 other runners, whilst we had several runners in parkruns in the UK. Toby Benham headed back to Worthing where he placed 151st in 24:46 in a field of 635, whilst our UK-based exiles also took part in other runs. Rob Glascott joined the huge field of 1103 in Battersea Park, placing 157th in 20:27, whilst Thom Martini placed 135th in 25:39 in the 479-strong field on Wimbledon Common. Finally, our Scottish-based exile, Aidan Hudner, placed 55th in 23:56 in the field of 336 in Pollok in Glasgow.
