![]() Another weekend of fun, this time following some 49 Crusaders who took part in the Rathfarnham 5k, which incorporated the Dublin 5k road championships, on a blustery, and not so warm, Sunday morning. The traditional course, well-known to the club, involves one major loop, passing through the start line again with about 600m to the finish. It is definitely a PB course as the start line is on a downhill and the loop is otherwise mostly flat, except for a slight climb after 800m. The wind was also quite strong, but was not too noticeable as quite a bit of the course felt sheltered from the SSE wind (helped by running into it only on the downhills perhaps). The race was an exciting affair, particularly among the elite women where for once Ide Nic Dhomhnaill did not have her own way. Pushed towards the end by Cheryl Nolan she eventually succumbed on the line, although some observers wondered if she hadn’t experienced an injury at that moment. Our contingent did the club proud, both in terms of turnout and results and we picked up some significant medals, including teams, as well as individual prizes. In recording a PB Colm Parnell placed 5th in a field of more than 1200 in a super time of 14:49 and he was followed by Alex Ainsworth, also with a PB, who placed 28th in 15:37. Patrick Conlon came next in 82nd spot in a time of 16:31, closely followed by John Mulvihill (84th in 16:33), and, as our senior team, they placed 6th. John was followed by Michael Wycherley (96th in 16:42), who also placed 4th M50 overall, but more importantly taking the bronze M50 medal in the Dublin Championships. Paul Reidy, making a welcome return to racing (115th in 17:03), was next, followed by Paul Cowhie (137th and 1st M60 in 17:29), Thomas Vogée (140th in the same chiptime) and Jan Manschot (143rd in 17:30). Charlotte Myers led the Crusaders female contingent home in a time of 17:48 for 161st place overall and 14th female finisher. Charlotte finished just ahead of Catherine Thornton, the Galway-based ex-Crusader who trains with us from time to time and who is just getting back into competitive running following injury (164th, 15th female finisher, 3rd F35 in a time of 17:49) and then by Annie Hughes, who recorded yet another PB with her effort (199th and 23rd in 18:22). Charlotte, Annie, Julie McGrath (218th and 25th in 18:29) and ladies’ captain Kathryn Gibbons (222nd and 26th in 18:39) placed 2nd in the women’s senior competition in the Dublin Championships. In fact, Julie also took the individual silver medal in the F35 category after completing a 9k warm up and then following the 5k with a 21k cooldown for 35k overall! Next came Kevin Lambe (229th in a PB time of 18:16), and he was followed by Eoin Fitzgerald (241st in 18:54), Ollie McGrath (247th in the same time), Carolyn O’Reilly (255th and 33rd in 19:04), Saoirse McGrath (258th and 34th in 19:07), Tomás Bradley (271st in 19:15) and Mags Foley in the first of two races she was to run on the day. Mags recorded a PB in this race (279th and 38th in 19:26) and, most importantly led the women’s O/35 team to a bronze medal. She was followed across the line by Oisin Browne (287th in 19:32) and then by Ruadhán MacCormaic who finally was able to find the time to race after having been forced to bow out because of work conflicts on several occasions this year. He certainly would have been happy with his 19:26 for 290th place. Ruadhán was followed by Daniel Cullen who also recorded a PB with time of 19:53 (330th), and then by Isabelle Cairns (349th and 58th in a time of 20:02, a possible PB), Kabir Sala (357th in a confirmed PB time of 19:55), Brian McGuckin (358th in 20:09), Rebecca Fleming (372nd and 64th in 20:20), Yvonne Macauley, just 3 months after giving birth (400th and 70th in 20:41). Together with Tanja Narancic (492nd and 105th in 21:52), Mags, Rebecca and Yvonne clinched the O/35 women’s team bronze medal. Just behind Yvonne came David O’Donnell (421st in 20:41), Sean Brady (466th in 21:22) and Neil Brown (476th in 21:39). David joined Michael, Paul and Brian to take the men’s O/55 team gold medal. Behind Tanja came Kate Murray (567th and 134th in 22:54), who was followed by Luz Estevan (581st and 139th in a PB time of 22:56), in her first competitive 5k outside parkrunning. Luz was followed by Anna Brown (588th and 142nd in 23:17), Olwyn Dunne (594th and 143rd in 23:25), Ambrose Carr (608th in 22:51), Simon Kenny (609th in 23:38), Bo Chicoine (620th in a PB time of 23:03), Amy O’Donoghue (725th and 181st also with a PB time of 24:36), Aoife Cowhie (725th and 203rd in 25:13), Louise Lanaud (885th and 299th in 27:14) and Paul E. Kelly (889th in 27:08). In placing 5th F65 in 28:29 (for 925th and 317th spots), Máirín Shine actually captured the F65 individual bronze medal and she was followed by Lorraine McMahon (930th and 320th in 28:33), Carina Davidson playing catch-up after a late start (1017th and 376th in 22:38) and, finally, by Mikel Crisostomo who unfortunately had been misled by one of the race’s posts that clearly stated that the event was due to start half an hour later than it actually did. As a consequence, Mikel placed 1182nd in a time of 38:05, although he actually ran 19:34. Brendan Glynn also ran in the race, but his result is not recorded. Commiserations to Mikel, but congratulations to everyone else, especially those with medals and/or PBs, several picking up county medals for the first time. Also, over the weekend we had at least two runners in the 19k edition of the challenging and hilly Eco Trail races. This took place on on Saturday. Stephen McBrinn and Anna Hernick, the latter in training for the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington DC on the same day as the Dublin marathon, joined 344 other runners in the race, with Stephen placing 96th in a guntime of 2:16:13, followed by Anna who placed 142nd and 35th in 2:26:26. As mentioned above, straight after finishing the Rathfarnham 5k, Mags Foley headed off to St. Anne’s Park in Raheny where she joined 382 other participants in a 2-lap 5k, raising funds for Beaumont Hospital. Amazingly, Mags placed 9th overall and 2nd female finisher in a time of 21:37. Further afield, we had at least 7 of our Crusader clubmates take part in the Berlin Marathon on Sunday morning. In much cooler conditions than usually experienced at this time of year in Germany’s capital city, we witnessed at least 4 PBs from the contingent. They were led home by Daragh O’Reilly who recorded a PB time of 2:35:51 and he was followed by Ciarain Kelly who also recorded a PB with his time of 2:38:42. Interestingly, Ciarain's twin brother, Sean, who runs for Raheny, also took part in the race, finishing in 2:44:00. Our exile in Switzerland, Lukasz Batruch, broke 3 hours for the first time, recording a PB of 2:58:56 and he was followed by Adrienne Jordan who ran 3:07:05, after having had to start further back than she had wanted and as a consequence having had to weave through slower runners early on, an effort that perhaps took its toll in the last few kilometres. Orla O’Flynn was next in 3:35:10 having also found the last 7km tough and Orla was followed by Kevin Kenny with a PB time of 4:00:39 and then by Peter Rosenshine (4:01:32). Mention also needs to be made of Fergal Morrissey who ran in the Hans Christian Andersen Marathon in Odense in Denmark on Sunday morning. The Guernsey native ran 3:48:24. Elsewhere, three of our exiles in Spain raced over the weekend. Esther Requena Ferri won the women’s race in 7.8k XC-Cross Rincón de la Victoria on Spain’s southern coast in 34:22, whilst partner Cristian Vilchez Ceballos placed 1st master in the shorter 5.75k edition in 22:33. Then, on Saturday morning, whilst out for his usual morning run, Charles-Edouard Cattier came across a 10k in Madrid, 10 minutes before the gun was due to go. He signed up immediately, in the Carrera del Corazón 10k, completing the distance in cool conditions (8 degrees) in 40:13. Closer to home, one of our London exiles, Thom Martini, ran in the Ealing Half marathon, which he completed in 2:12. Finally, Florian Mormont ran in his native France in the 16k Paris to Versailles race, which saw him finish in 1:43. Perhaps, because of the Rathfarnham 5k on Sunday, we may have had fewer runners take part in Saturday morning’s parkruns. Nevertheless, we were able to uphold the tradition of having first finishers as well as podium places. Emer Kenny will have been satisfied to place 9th and 1st female finisher in Tolka Valley Park in a time of 24:47, preceded in the 41-strong field by Felipe De Souza (2nd in 20:14) and then followed by Sarah Lyons i24th and 8th in 30:01) and Rebecca Fleming (25th and 9th in 30:23). Running without a token, Aoife Quigley placed 26th and 1st in the 217-strong field in Tramore Valley in Cork. Aoife’s time was 19:32 and she was followed home by Mairead Cashman (139th and 35th in 29:16). Another first finisher was Jade Murphy once again in Poolbeg where, in a field of 200, she placed 14th overall. She was one among 18 Crusaders in the event and was preceded by Stephen Hurley (2nd in 17:44), Kenan Furlong (3rd in 17:49), Ryan Preston (9th in 20:50) and Piarais Neary (10th in 20:54). Following behind came Louise Dobbyn (20th and 2nd in 22:44), and Louise was followed by Paul Campbell (30th in 24:08), Josie Ward (34th and 6th in 24:19), Kevin Lambe (93rd in 28:25), Tanja Narancic (116th and 40th in 29:37), Sophia Morgan (117th and 41st in 29:38), Olwyn Dunne (122nd and 44th in 29:45), Lorraine McMahon (123rd and 45th in 29:45), Fiona Shine (124th and 46th in 29:46), Cynthia Perucca (129th and 48th in 30:13), Mari Hansen (169th and 75th in 35:35), Máirín Shine (173rd and 77th in 36:19) and Lisa Shine (184th and 83rd in 45:14). Kev Moore, Mary Donnelly and Kabir Sala joined 152 other runners in Bushy Park where Kev placed 8th in 21:26, followed by Mary (17th and 2nd in 22:44) and Kabir came home in 104th spot in 31:40. Maria Kennedy continues to improve her times in the Kilkenny Parkrun, placing 45th and 5th in 25:40 in a field of 150 there. Ger Forde, inadvertently and as part of a longer run, and Karl Walsh ran in the 127-strong field in Naas, where Karl placed 21st in 21:21 and Ger ran 22:09 for 27th spot, whilst, in Marlay Park, John Lohan and Tara Murphy ran alongside 416 other participants, with John placing 35th in 22:18, followed by Tara who placed 182nd and 43rd in 26:47. Diarmuid Fahey was our lone representative in Fairview, where he placed 34th in a field of 144 and in a time 24:38, whilst, in River Valley Park, Darina Scully pushed her buggy to 54th and 11th places in 30:39. The field there measured 105. Liam Lyster was a participant alongside 35 other runners in Strokestown once again where he ran 31:58 for 17th spot, whilst we had two runners in Cabinteely. In a field of171, Jill Nason placed 107th and 34th in 30:28, with Carina Davidson finished in a time of 37:05 for 143rd and 57th places. We had 6 runners in St. Anne’s Raheny. Led home by Michael Maughan in 132nd place in a time of 24:56, the contingent in the field of 471 included Aoife Kelly (171st and 32nd in 26:23), Áine Crotty (222nd and 52nd in 27:36), Cian Coughlan (225th in 27:40), Paul F. Kelly (228th in 27:46) and Aisling O’Riordan (269th and 78th in 28:51). Finally, our exile in Scotland, Aidan Hudner, ran with 348 other participants in Pollok, Glasgow once again where he placed 60th in 23:27.
