There will be plenty of races on which to report immediately after Christmas. However, in the lead up to the festive break, and in the absence of much on offer, many of our runners had to content themselves this weekend with parkruns, which enjoyed substantial numbers as a consequence. Nevertheless, we do have some excellent results from an indoor track meet last week in Abbotstown hosted by Athletics Ireland, the 123 Track and Field Live, one of a series of indoor meets throughout the winter season (between December and March).

In a race over an unusual distance of 1km (five times round the 200m track), Charlotte Myers came 2nd in the women’s senior event in a speedy time of 2:51.41, with Annie Hughes, in her first indoor race, placing 3rd in 3:06.58. Karl Fitzmaurice placed 2nd in the senior men’s 800m in a time of 2:19.59, whilst, in a large field in the men’s mile, Enda Clarke, placed 2nd overall and 1st M40 in a time of 4:44.60.

Further afield, on the road, Shivanandra Pukhrem took part in a race midweek, the Carnivella 10k in Patsoi in eastern India, which he completed in 50:11. Meanwhile, two of our Spanish exiles, Cristian Vilchez Ceballos and Esther Requena distinguished themselves again, twice, over the weekend. They both competed in the Carrera del Pavo, a 5k street race in Novelda near Alicante on Saturday. Cristian placed 8th overall and 2nd M35 in a time of 16:38, whilst Esther won the women’s race in a time of 18:59, winning a turkey for her efforts! Then, on Sunday morning they both ran in an 11k street and road race around Aspe, where Esther placed 2nd woman in 44:27 and Cristian again placed 2nd M35 in 39:16.

As mentioned, there was significant participation in parkruns on Saturday morning with some standout results. Sarah Grace Breen headed to London where she ran in the Battersea parkrun. In a field of 862, Sarah-Grace placed 56th overall and 3rd female finisher in a PB time of 17:30 (a 6 seconds improvement on Jingle Bells and an 85% age-grade result).

Meanwhile, we had several first finishers and podium placers around the country. Gill Earley placed 15th and 1st in the 152-strong field in Naas, with a time of 21:25, whilst, in Mountbellew Forest, Áine Kenny placed 9th and 1st in 24:42 in a field of 63. Miriam Logan ran once again in Shanganagh. In a field of 277, she took 37th and 2nd spots in 21:53. Oisin Browne also ran there, but his time and place were not recorded. Mary Donnelly and Kev Moore ran once again in Bushy Park, with Mairead Cashman this week stewarding there. In a field of 200, Kev placed 14th in 20:22, followed by Mary who recorded a time of 22:43 for 24th and 3rd spots.

By far and away our largest turnout was as usual in Poolbeg. In a field of 222, Kenan Furlong led the contingent of at least 28 Crusaders across the line in 3rd place in a time of 18:02. Fresh from her fast run in the 3k time trial held in icy conditions on Tuesday at the track, Emma Rowe again led the Crusaders women home in 14th and 2nd in 19:43. In between came Jan Manschot (4th in 18:12), followed by Ronan Walsh (9th in 19:06), limbering up for the Fields of Athenry 10k on Stephen’s Day.

Further back came Stephen Hurley (16th in 19:55) and he was closely followed by Alby Allan (17th in 20:17) and then by returning London exile, Kate O’Malley (20th and 4th in 20:17). Ross Neill, as part of a long run, was next (23rd in 20:32), followed by Diarmuid Finan (29th in 21:11), Jade Murphy, pacing the 23 minutes runners (43rd and 7th in 22:42), Fergal Morrissey (53rd in 23:44) just ahead of Aoife McCarthy (54th and 9th in 23:45). Next came Ryan Preston (55th in 24:15), followed by Josie Ward (60th and 11th in 24:28), Charlie Coonan (68th in 24:43), Saketh Ravuluri (71st in 24:53), Russell Murphy (90th in 26:00), Alan Martin (94th in 26:21), Franky Keane (105th in 26:51) just ahead of Olwyn Dunne (106th and 29th in 26:52) and then by Bo Chicoine (112th in 27:06), Djinn Von Noorden (119th and 31st in 27:23), Imogen Guinness (122nd and 32nd in 27:29), Iseult Ni Chuinneagain (136th and 42nd in 28:22), Kevin Kenny (150th in 29:06) and Cynthia Perucca (200th and 77th in 34:02).

Dee Lawlor joined the field of 253 in Cabinteely, where he placed 6th in 19:26, whilst, in Tolka Valley Park, Laura O’Malley placed 17th and 5th in 26:02 in a field of 45. Sarah Lyons and Phelim Murray, with young Daniel in a buggy, also joined the field, placing 29th and 11th and 30th in 30:09 an 30:18, respectively. Michael O’Shea was our lone runner in the 253-strong field in Donabate, where he placed 21st in 21:15, whilst, similarly, on her own, Dee Ni Chearbhaill ran in a field of 382 in Malahide, where she placed 75th and 15th in 22:35.

Darina Scully ran alongside 166 other participants in River Valley Park, where she placed 56th and 9th in 28:39, whilst Martina White ran in Porterstown with its field of 165, where she placed 57th and 14th in 28:45. John O’Donnell joined a field of 505 runners in Marlay Park, where he placed 29th in 20:28, whilst, in St. Anne’s, several Crusaders joined Fiona Shine for her 200th parkrun. Fiona’s time and position and those of Emily Glen were not actually recorded, but those of others were. In a field of 434 runners, Louise O’Riordan placed 147th and 34th in 26:18 and she was followed by Julian Callan (294th in 30:53), just ahead of Emer Kenny (295th and 99th in 30:54), Carina Davidson (297th and 100th in 30:59), Lisa Shine (299th and 102nd in 31:08), Paul E. Kelly (354th in 33:14), Anna Shine (361st and 141st in 34:13) and Máirín Shine (365th and 142nd in 34:31).

Finally, three of our UK exiles ran there on Saturday morning. Aidan Hudner ran once again in Pollok in Glasgow where he placed 74th in a field of 318 and in a time of 24:37, whilst Thom Martini joined a field of 603 in Richmond, placing 306th in 29:16 and Toby Benham ran in the 146-strong field in Rugby, where he placed 22nd in 23:47.
