Members of the club were involved in events all across the island over the weekend as well as abroad, with some excellent results. As usual, however, we kick off the report on the track, with the results of last week’s 6th Dublin graded meet that took place on Wednesday evening in windy conditions on the DCU track at Santry’s Morton Stadium. Tessa O’Neill won the women’s 400m grade D race in 65.18, whilst we had 5 runners take part in various grades of the men’s 1500m. In the grade A race heat 1 (of 2) Colm Parnell placed 5th in 4:04.73. Then, in the grade B event, Chris Russell placed 3rd in 4:11.45. Henry Griffin and Patrick Conlon ran in heat 1 of 2 of the grade C races, with Henry taking 3rd spot in 4:25.00, followed by Patrick in 8th in 4:31.08. Meanwhile, Joe McDermott finished in 9th place in heat 1 of 2 in the grade D series. Joe’s time was 4:50.64. Finally, in the field, we had major success in the shot put, with Conor Quinn taking the win with a throw of 15.53m. Conor was followed by Shane Lynch in 2nd place with a throw of 12.64m and then 4th place was taken by Henry Moylan with a throw of 11.00m. The road races in which we featured this week began on Friday night with the Sliabh Buidhe Rovers AC-organised Mick Memorial 5k held down in Co. Wexford. The anti-clockwise one loop race along country roads undulates a bit and has a notable uphill finish over the final kilometre. Margaret Foley was our sole competitor, placing 61st overall in a field of 173 and 6th female finisher in a time of 20:31. The following morning, we had runners in both the half marathon and 5-mile races in Clontarf and also in the half marathon and 10k events on the island of Achill. There were 3,158 finishers in the Clontarf Half, conducted largely out and back along the bike paths on the estuary coast. New member Rory O’Kennedy, who is beginning his training for the Dublin marathon, placed 6th in an excellent time of 82:14 and he was followed by John O’Donnell, with similar intentions but carrying a slight injury (103rd in 91:53) and so dialled it back a bit in the second half. Next came another marathoner, Adrian Groarke (203rd in 96:04) and Adrian was followed by David Healy (369th in 1:40:38), James Bradshaw (383rd in a PB time of 1:41:03) and by Will Holton (478th in 1:41:11). Aitor Arribas Velasco also ran, placing 1,213th in 1:57:54. We had at least two runners in the 5-mile event, both finishing on the podium. Stephen Hurley placed 2nd in 28:23, just 5 seconds off the win, with Michael Kiely not too far back in 3rd place with a time of 28:58. The field measured 1,162 finishers. We had a participant in each of the races held in Achill on Saturday morning. In a field of 626 finishers, Edel Doherty placed 267th and 65th in 1:58:34, whilst, in the 10k, Louise O’Riordan joined 546 other runners, finishing in 32nd overall and 3rd place in the women’s race in a time of 46:47 on the hilly course. Further afield, our Italian exile, Italo Giancaterina, was in action again, and once again won his race. This was the XVII Edizione D’Lumont, where he ran 33:02 over a distance of about 10.2k, finishing 3 minutes ahead of the field of around 400 runners. Richard Phelan ran in the 110km UTMB Val D’Aran, which was paused at 94km because of a storm. Richie finished the full race with its climb of 6,300m in 26:33:06. Then, on Sunday morning, in Australia, Maurice Kelter once again improved both his half and full marathon PBs. Maurice ran in the Gold Coast marathon, finishing in a superb overall time of 2:35:50. Of interest to members, we had clubmates take part in the Ring of Kerry 173k cycle. They included Áine Kenny, Karl Walsh and Tomás Bradley. Also, Isabelle Cairns ran the 5k leg of the Two Provinces triathlon in a time of 21:21 and Maria Kennedy ran the 5k of the Kilkenny triathlon in a time of 26:04. There were at least two races in the Irish mountains last week with Crusader participation. On Saturday, Donatas Jocius won the Croghan Half marathon down near Gorey in Co. Wexford in a time of 1:46:53 and he was followed by Becky Quinn who won the women's race in 1:59:00, placing 10th in the field of 88 in the process. Meanwhile, last Wednesday, we had at least 5 participants in the IMRA-organised Ballinastoe 11k held near Roundwood in Co. Wicklow on an out-and-back course with a large anti-clockwise loop around White Mountain and involving a climb of 504m. Once again, Becky Quinn won the women’s race in the Leinster League in a time of 61:38, placing 29th overall in the field of 172. Ahead of Becky came Donatas Jocius who placed 10th in 55:12, and they were followed by Clare Sullivan (47th overall, 3rd woman finisher and 1st F40 in 64:55), Brian McGuckin (64th and 4th M55 in 71:09) and Kathryn Gibbons (87th and 14th in 75:20). Toby Benham and Mary Donnelly saved our blushes this week, by finishing as first finishers in parkruns on Saturday morning. Toby headed the 81-strong field in Carlow Town, completing the event in 19:48, whilst Mary placed 16th overall in the field of 233 in Bushy Park in a time of 22:48. Kev Moore also ran there, where he placed 5th in 20:24. Podium finishes were recorded by several others. Kevin Lambe placed 3rd in 20:41 in the 86-strong field in Athlone RSC, whilst Ilona McElroy placed 2nd overall and 2nd female finisher in Falcarragh alongside 100 other participants. Ilona’s time was 20:36. Mark Culleton finished in 2nd place in a time of 20:04 in the modest field of 19, whilst Kathryn Tomkins (née Sweeney) also placed 2nd (9th overall) in a time of 21:40 in Omagh with its field of 102. In Uditore in Italy, Lorraine McMahon took 17th and 2nd in a field of 43 in 32:37, whilst, in New Ross, Aoife Kelly finished just behind husband Paul in a time of 24:49 for 23rd and 2nd places. In the field of 79, Paul placed 22nd in 24:48. Finally, Louise Dobbyn placed 21st and 3rd in 23:46 in Cabinteely. In the field of 143 Louise was joined by Stephen Mulligan (36th in 25:46), Barry O’Neill (39th in 25:12), Carina Davidson (121st and 48th in 37:37) and Olwyn Dunne (125th and 51st in 38:23), who took it handy having donated blood the previous day. Ross Neill ran once again in Ormeau Park in Belfast, where he placed 5th in 18:01 in a field of 403, whilst Darina Scully took 26th and 5th places in the 104-strong field of River Valley Park in a time of 26:29. Luke Haran crossed the line in 6th place in 21:43 in Mungret Park in a field of 75, whilst we had a smaller contingent than usual in Poolbeg in a field of 175. They were led home by Zlatko Kulic (16th in 21:46) and he was followed by Michael Fitzsimons just behind (17th in 21:48) with Sharon Woods (36th and 5th in 23:35) further back. Next came Josie Ward, running her 200th parkrun, in 37th and 6th places in a time of 23:44, followed by Russell Murphy (45th in 24:26), Kate Healy (76th and 21st in 26:36) and Anna Hernick (119th and 51st in 31:07).
