There was much to talk about this week, with some racing towards the end of the weekend no doubt inspired by Irish success in the European Athletics Championships in Rome. We start as usual with reporting from the Dublin Athletics 4th graded meet in Tallaght Stadium on Wednesday evening. In somewhat chilly conditions, we had runners in 3 races on the night. Enda Clarke won heat 1 of the men’s grade C 800m in a time of 2:06.55, whilst Henry Griffin ran in heat 2 of the same grade, placing 8th in 2:06.13. Then, in the D grade of the same distance, Paul E. Kelly placed 9th in heat 3 in 3:30.61. Moving on then to road and trail racing, on Saturday we had one runner in the Run Killarney half marathon and another in the 10k. In the half, with a field of 1152 finishers, Fergal Carroll ran 1:53:03 for 360th place, whilst in the 10k, Colm Foley, on his birthday weekend, ran 49:38 for 169th in a field of 1147 finishers. On the same morning we had runners take part in a plethora of events in Portumna Forest. Tara Murphy ran in the 50k where, in a field of 79, she placed 56th overall and 10th female across the line in a time of 5:44:13. Emily Glen had Paul Campbell for company running the full marathon, where she recorded a PB time of 3:41:11 to place 15th and 3rd in a field of 59. Paul placed 16th in recording a time of 3:42:04. In the 198-strong half marathon we had 3 runners. They were led home by Franky Keane (21st in 1:38:51), followed by Gillian Curran (78th and 26th in 1:55:56) and Cliodhna O’Reilly (129th and 51st in 2:05:54). Finally, Tara Gavin won the women’s race in the 10k. In a field of 255, Tara placed 6th overall in a time of 45:37 and she was followed across the line by Paula Bradshaw (17th and 4th in 48:26) and by Mary Dolan (93rd and 43rd in 58:06). Congrats to all. Sunday also saw some road races. We had two clubmates take part in the Bohermeen 5k. In a field of 343, Joe McDermott finished in 34th spot in a time of 17:05, followed by Paul Cowhie who placed 57th overall and 1st M60 in a time of 17:53. Then, in Corkagh Park, The Dublin marathon organisers held the first race of the Irish Life Race Series, the 5-miler. In a field of 1376 Alby Allan was the first Crusader across the line with a PB time of 29:59. He was followed by John O’Donnell who was pacing the 35-minute finishers. John ran 34:52 for 138th place, and he was followed by Olwyn Dunne (234th overall, 26th female finisher and 2nd F55 in 37:22). Behind Olwyn came another runner with a PB. This was Noel Carr who placed 251st in 37:03 and he was followed by Tomás Dunne (271st in 37:39) and by Amy O’Donoghue (461st overall, 77th female finisher and 2nd FJ finisher in 41:36). Again, congrats! Some super results. Members may be interested to hear that Kieran Little, who recently transferred to Blackrock, placed 7th and 1st M35 in 26:59. Further afield over the weekend, one of our Italian exiles, Italo Giancaterina won a trail race in Rocca Santa Maria in Italy. The race, described as 11k, but in reality measuring 9.5k, was the 3rd Trofeo Monti Della Lage and was won by Italo in a time of 33:03. Meanwhile, Lukasz Batruch ran in a trail race in Zumikon, Switzerland (the ZKB Zumiker Lauf) on a course of 11.8k which he completed in 50:51. Finally, Valentin Akdim, our French exile now living in Bordeaux, took part in the Raid Arpois Bedous in the western Pyrenees. Valentin covered the distance of 58.7k in 9:08:00. Closer to home, we had several members compete in the Wicklow 100km cycle race (Phelim Murray, Conor Macguinness and Karl Walsh among them) and also in the Hell and Back event, which included Emma Rowe and possibly others. Then, in Northern Ireland, Louise O’Riordan took part in the Crooked Lake triathlon, taking place halfway between Belleek and Newry. Louise completed the 5.24k run element in 24:57. There were three more races organised in the mountains last week, the third of which does not have any published results as of yet. When they are published, the report will be updated. It was the Dublin Mountains trail running festival involving two distances, 25k and 50k. Donatas Jocius apparently placed 3rd in the 25k race. The first was held on Wednesday evening around Scalp in the Dublin Mountains and organised by IMRA. The race distance was 7.2k and conducted on a 3-loop course (one large and two smaller) on moderate terrain with a climb of 217m. We had at least 10 runners in the event. Once again, Becky Quinn won the women’s race, placing 23rd overall in a field of 209 in a time of 41:52. She was headed across the line by Jason Kehoe (7th in 39:09) and by Warren Swords (17th in 40:15). Further back came Clare Sullivan (52nd and 4th and 1st F40 in 44;24) , Brian McGuckin (52nd and 3rd M55 in 46:40), Caoimhe Dempsey (56th and 6th in 47:31), Gareth Phelan (85th in 50:50), Ian Clifford (90th in 51:26), Gavan Doherty (140th in 58:26) and by Berndt Heim (201st in 60:29). Then, on Saturday, Becky Quinn won yet another long distance race. The event was the IMRA Trooperstown and Clara Vale Loop 21.5k in Co. Wicklow. It involved a climb of 750m and Becky placed 20th overall in a time of 2:02:11 in a field of 102. Miriam Logan saved the day with the sole first finish among Crusaders in parkruns on Saturday morning. Miriam was running in Shanganagh, where, in a field of 210, she placed 7th overall. Miriam was followed there by Orlaith de Burca (105th and 25th in 27:58) and by Niamh Quinn (169th and 66th in 31:25). We did, nonetheless, have a few podium results. Kate Murray took 2nd place (15th overall) in the 97-strong field in Mullingar in a time of 22:53, whilst John Lohan placed 2nd in 24:39 in the 18-strong field in Knockanacree Woods. Further afield Áine Kenny ran in Ekebergsletta in Norway, where, in a field of 84, she placed 22nd and 3rd in 22:22. Also, abroad, Mary Donnelly and Kev Moore ran in the Roma Pineto parkrun in Italy, with mary placing 27th and 3rd in 25:02 and Kev placing 12th in 21:02. The field measured 76 and conditions were described as extremely hot! Diarmuid Byrne ran in Tolka Valley, where, in a field of 68, he placed 4th in 21:01, whilst Darina Scully ran in Avondale Forest where she placed 25th and 4th in a time of 25:42, with the field measuring 88. Eoghan Corrigan placed 6th, running alongside 96 other participants in Waterstown. Eoghan’s time was 21)1, whilst Karl Walsh placed 7th in a time of 18:57 in a field of 139 in Naas. Our largest contingent as usual was in Poolbeg. Kenan Furlong took 5th spot in 18:15, followed in the field of 237 by Michael Wycherley (7th in 18:30), Jessica Norris (50th and 4th in 23:01), Áine Crotty (63rd and 8th in 23:39), Josie Ward (64th and 9th in 23:40) just behind, Cian Coughlan (65th in 23:43), Kate Healy (101st and 28th in 25:54), Tanja Narancic (103rd and 29th in 26:02), Luke Corcoran (126th in 27:26), Olwyn Dunne (131st and 41st in 27:55), Maureen McGinley (149th and 52nd in 29:05) and Fiona Bane, tailwalking. The first female finisher was actually ex-Crusader Catherine Thornton. However, her finishing time of 19:49 and 16th overall place was not recorded as she did not have her barcode with her. Our UK exile Thom Martini ran once again in Gunnersbury where, in a field of 635, he placed 106th in 23:36, whilst Phil Sykes placed 70th in 23:20 in the 469-strong field in Marlay Park. He was followed by Mairead Cashman (277th and 80th in 29:48). Carina Davidson ran in the 148-strong field in Cabinteely, where she placed 121st and 52nd in 37:55, whilst Kevin Flynn placed 83rd running alongside 104 other runners in Porterstown. Kevin’s time was 35:52. Kevin Kenny’s visit to Montréal in Canada involved running in the Frédéric Back parkrun there. In a field of 96, Kevin ran 25:31 for 39th spot. Meanwhile, we had 4 runners in Fairview. Andy Deuser was our first runner home in the field of 205, placing 28th in 22:42. Andy was followed by Aoife Kelly (82nd and 12th in 26:18), Paul F. Kelly (84th in 26:22) and Hannah Jones (101st and 17th in 27:39). Finally, we had 4 runners also in Bushy Park.
