Matched Wins across the Country

22/2/2026

PictureStanding L-R: Georgina Loughrey, Olwyn Dunne, Anna Hernick, Clare Bradley, Imogen Guinness, Carmel Higgins, Emer Kenny, Sophia Morgan, Joanne Carey, Marie-Claire Daly, Lisa Branigan, Mairead Cashman, Juliane Frydenlund. Kneeling: Caoimhe O'Halloran, Máirín Shine, Anna Shine, Luz Estevan, Lisa Shine, Paula Bradshaw, Carina Davidson, Emma O'Mahony
There was a good deal of road racing taking place this weekend and last week, from Lisdoonvarna in Co. Clare to Wicklow and elsewhere. Sunday also saw the third race in the Winter League of the Women’s Meet and Train with excellent participation.

We start, however, with the wins recorded over the weekend. Dee Lawlor, who, along with John O’Donnell, is in training for an ultra-marathon in Romania in May, and who placed a creditable 20th in the Donadea 50k last Sunday, incredibly went out and won the hilly Wicklow Hospice 10k on Saturday morning in a great time of 35:36. In the field of 542, Senan Garvey placed 3rd in 36:37, followed by John (12th in 39:49), who, by virtue of Dee winning the race, likely placed 2nd in his M40 age category. Seamas Bulaeir was next (84th in 51:39), with Carina Davidson (who also joined the field in the WM&T the following day) placing 241st overall and 107th female finisher in 60:59.

There was also a half marathon in Wicklow on the same day and David Carter placed 38th in the field of 399 finishers in 93:18. There would have been 400 finishers. However, Phil Sykes went over on his ankle halfway round and unfortunately had to pull out of the race.

Another race winner was Aisling Harrington who joined a field of 341 in the Lisdoonvarna 5-mile, an event in the Run Clare series. Aisling placed 6th overall in 32:43. Elsewhere, we had at least three runners taking part in a couple of races organised by the Two Mile House GAA in Co. Kildare. In the 10k event, with a field of 126, Emma Rowe won the women’s race in 40:21, placing 13th overall, whilst Joe Walsh placed 3rd overall in 36:59. Meanwhile in the 5k edition with 264 runners, Charlie Coonan, with his 2nd race of the week, placed 30th in 21:31. On Sunday, John Lohan and Tara Murphy ran in the Nenagh Half marathon. Both recorded gun times as their chips didn't activate. Tara ran 2:04:16 for 532nd and 119th places, whilst John ran 1:40:58 for 201st. Despite their chips failing to register, Tara still succeeded in winning her F60 age category. Lastly, also on Sunday, Luke Haran ran in a non-chipped charity 10k in Milford, Co. Limerick, which he completed in 45:06.

On Wednesday evening, not only did the club provide 34 stewards for the first running of the Run the Night 8k, taking place around the Docklands Quays and the East Wall, but we also had at least 13 athletes running in the field of 3968 finishers. It was quite a congested event and thankfully at least 1000 runners didn’t come out for the race because of the unpromising weather. In the final event, the strong winds died down and surprisingly it stayed dry for the race.

Conor Kilkenny placed 5th in 26:54 and he was followed by Alby Allan (49th in 30:21), Brian O’Regan (54th in 30:31) just ahead of Conor MacGuinness (57th in 30:39). Kevin (Billy) O’Sullivan was next (93rd in 31:21) and he was followed by Ronan Smith who’d come down from Cavan for the occasion (149th in 32:29), Garret Connolly (likely 199th in 33:22), Enda Currid (322nd in 35:22), Luke Haran (423rd in 36:04), Phelim Murray (likely 464th in 36:26), Jens Segewiss (687th in 38:08) and Aoife McCarthy (754th and 113th in 38:30). Members may be interested to hear that Liz Maher, who trains with us, ran 29:58 for 3rd place in the women’s race, 45th overall.

Further afield, Molly Hyland headed to Alicante for the half marathon there on Sunday and she did herself proud on the hilly course, improving her PB by a minute to a super time of 86:28 and 18th female finisher. Then, earlier in the weekend, one of our Italian exiles, Alessandro Nappi ran in the Naples half marathon where he ran 1:47:00, whilst one of our Italian exiles in the US, Andrea Rondina, ran in a 3000m track race in San Francisco. He completed the distance in 8:49.35 placing 5th in the event. Two of our Spanish exiles, Cristian Vilchez Ceballos and Esther Requena Ferri, ran in a 10k street race in Torremolinos (the Carihuela), where Cristian recorded a time of 34:29 for 10th place overall and Esther placed 4th in the women’s race in a time of 38:53. Another of our Spanish exiles, Pablo Sanchez, became O/40 Madrid indoor 1500m champion on Sunday with a time of 4:17.

Over in Tymon Park on Sunday morning, we were able to watch the third race in this season’s WM&T winter league, this edition organised by Sportsworld. Indeed, the Bushy Park club took full advantage of the event to field 5 of the top 10 finishers and 10 of the first 20 in the 152-strong race, several of them lapping the field on the well-known 2.5-loop hilly course at the southern end of the park on the Tallaght side near the basketball arena. For those without spikes there were treacherous bits of mud in places, particularly just before a steep hill.

Our contingent of 21 was led home by Luz Estevan in an excellent 9th place with a time of 12:32. Luz was followed by Caoimhe O’Halloran who had a stormer of a last lap, making up numerous places (19th in 13:05). Caoimhe was followed by a strong run from Joanne Carey (24th in 13:12) and then by Paula Bradshaw (40th in 13:48) and Imogen Guinness (41st in 13:49), both runners showing great form. Carmel Higgins was next (46th in 14:03) and she was followed by Clare Bradley in her first race of the series, as an individual (49th in 14:11), just ahead of Sophia Morgan (50th in 14:12) and Emma O’Mahony (51st in 14:13) who demonstrated great sprinting technique.

Emer Kenny was next (56th in 14:23), ahead of Olwyn Dunne (62nd in 14:39), Lisa Branigan (63rd in 14:42), and Lisa Shine (93rd in 15:40) who had a super sprint at the end, getting ahead of another runner who seemed to jump in ahead in the chute but who thankfully was not given the place ahead of Lisa.  In 98th place came Georgina Loughrey (15:55) ahead of Carina Davidson in her 2nd race of the weekend (102nd in 16:09), Anna Shine (125th in 17:05), Anna Hernick (130th in 17:28), Helen Finucane (131st in 17:32), Máirín Shine (135th in 17:54), Marie-Claire Daly (147th in 19:47) and Niamh Trihy (150th in 21:05) guided by Kevin Kenny.  Juliane Frydenlund joined the back of the race as an individual without a number but her time of around 16:12 was not recorded. Team results are yet to be produced, but it would be premature to draw too many conclusions before the 4th race next month. Even so, in the Diamond division two of our teams are currently lying 5th and 7th; in the Platinum division, we have three teams with one lying 1st and the other two, 7th and 9th. Finally, in the Bronze division, the three teams are lying 1st, 5th and 6th.

Another XC race took place on Sunday in windy but otherwise dry conditions. This was the Teachers mixed 6k organised by the BHAA on the playing fields of Clonkeen College in Deansgrange. In a smallish field of 81, we had at least 8 Crusaders take part. They were led home by Joe Walsh (following his previous day’s exploits) in 5th spot and 1st in his new age category of M50 in a time of 24:47. Joe was followed by Karl Walsh (11th and 2nd M45 in 26:22), Liam Morris (22nd in 28:21), Tony Hackett (35th in 30:24), Phelim Murray (39th in 30:59), Neil Brown (51st in 32:54), Tomás Dunne (59th in 34:26) and Brendan Glynn (67th in 36:24).

IMRA organised two races over the weekend, starting with the Clonmel Trail half marathon on Saturday in which Donatas Jocius participated, completing the distance in 2:20:45 for 47th place in the field of 156. There was another, shorter race, in Wexford on Sunday in which we may have had a competitor or two. At time of writing the results are yet to be published for the latter event and once they are, and if any Crusaders participated, the report will be updated.

No parkruns were cancelled because of the weather this week and it appears that at least one of them, Poolbeg, was able to return to its original course, taking into account the steep hill in the nature reserve, previously slightly inaccessible because of flooding at its base.

We had again some first finisher and podium places as usual.  Indeed, one of our first finishers, Rob Cross, ran in Poolbeg alongside at least 27 Crusaders in the field of 241. Rob ran 17:19, followed by new member Ashley Hayes (2nd in 17:33) and then by Paddy Gaynor (9th in 19:33), Ronan Walsh (11th in 19:38), David O’Donnell (26th in 21:07), Conor Kilkenny (35th in 21:58) and Donal O’Malley (39th in 22:08).

Further back came Kabir Sala (56th in 23:08) and he was followed by Keith McConigly (60th in 23:17), Josie Ward (63rd and 5th in 23:28), Aoife McCarthy (69th and 6th in 23:40), Fiona Bane (76th and 8th in 24:05), Louise O’Riordan (83rd and 10th in 24:40), Ryan Preston (84th in 24:52), Sophia Morgan (88th and 11th in 24:59) and Emily Glen (89th and 12th in 25:02).

Paul F. Kelly (100th in 25:42) was next, followed by Tanja Narancic (112th and 23rd in 26:11), Franky Keane (113th in 26:12), Ellen Walsh (124th and 29th in 26:43), Olwyn Dunne (140th and 41st in 27:49), Bo Chicoine (141st in 27:58), Neil Brown (153rd in 28:17), Aisling O’Riordan (157th and 54th in 28:35), Lieze Verberght (184th and 67th in 31:03), Siobhan Russell (201st and 75th in 32:16), Cynthia Perucca (202nd and 76th in the same time) and Tara Murphy, tailwalking. Marie-Claire Daly also ran, but her result was not recorded.

Felipe De Sousa ran alongside 86 other runners in Tolka Valley Park, where he placed 2nd in 19:05, whilst Karl Walsh and Rebecca Fleming ran in the 151-strong field in Naas, with Karl placing 4th in 20:13 and Rebecca in 20th and 3rd in 23:06. Meanwhile, in Bushy Park with its field of 213 participants, Kev Moore took 4th spot in 20:48, followed by Mary Donnelly (15th and 3rd in 22:28), Paula Nolan (45th and 8th in 24:48) and Mairead Cashman (171st and 61st in 33:59). Garret Dunne took 4th place in Tymon Park, alongside 110 other runners, in a time of 19:15, whilst in Shanganagh Janet McManus placed 61st and 7th in 24:35. In the field of 339 there, Kevin Kenny placed 255th in 34:44, followed by Máirín and Lisa Shine (respectively 282nd and 109th and 283rd and 110th in 37:04 and 37:05). Newly-returned Kevin Lambe ran in the 145-strong field in Mullingar where he placed 2nd in a time of 19:40.

We had at least 3 runners in Fairview alongside 200 other participants. They were led across the line by Michael O’Shea (11th in 21:35) and he was followed by Ceolan McMullin (78th in 28:38) and Ross Neill, tailwalking. Gerard Moore placed 46th in 22:13 in the 498-strong field in St. Anne’s, ahead of Grainne Regan (159th and 31st in 27:11), whilst in Sligo, Orla McTernan joined a field of 136, where she placed 93rd and 30th in 31:57. Meanwhile, Luke Haran ran in Cabinteely, where, in a field of 182, he placed 19th in 22:37, whilst Lorraine McMahon ran once again on the Midleton Greenway, where, in a field of 144, she placed 66th and 12th in 28:17.

Aitor Arribas Velasco placed 166th in 29:23, alongside 280 other participants in Tramore Valley, Cork, whilst Brendan Glynn took 66th spot in 26:47 in the field of 221 in Donabate. Martina White ran in the 136-strong field in Porterstown where she placed 91st and 42nd in 33:09, whilst Ailish Hassett ran once more on Bere Island, where alongside 60 other runners, she placed 38th and 22nd in 33:51.

Further afield, one of our UK exiles, John Reidy, ran in Perth, Scotland where, in a field of 333, he placed 36th in 21:55, whilst another, Eva Kennedy, ran in Battersea Park, where she placed 419th and 58th in 23:46 in a field of 1199. In Gunnersbury Thom Martini joined 750 other participants where he placed 342nd in 28:54, whilst in Coomera in Australia, Kris Ryan placed 25th and 4th in 26:39 in a field of 143.

"I have been a member of Crusaders  for over a year now, and I can confidently say that it has transformed my life. The coaches are knowledgeable, supportive, and truly care about each member's progress. The training plans and sessions are challenging yet achievable, and the sense of community is unparalleled.
But what sets this club apart is the emphasis on inclusivity and diversity. No matter your age, fitness level, or background, you are welcomed with open arms and encouraged to push yourself to your full potential. The club also hosts various social events throughout the year, which have allowed me to make lasting friendships with fellow runners."
