L-R: Luz Estevan, Paula Nolan, David O'Donnell, Robbie Moore, Phelim Murray, Chris Bannon, Brian McGuckin, Isabelle Cairns, Sharon Woods Hot on the heels of last week’s first Dublin graded track & field meet of the year and also the first IMC meet, we were treated to two more events on the track and in the field, with the Belfast Milers meet held on the Mary Peters track in Lisburn on Saturday, followed by the second Dublin graded meet at the Morton Stadium on Sunday. The latter occasion included some Dublin Championships events in which we featured as a club and where we had some success. In Lisburn, Hugo Magee took part in the men’s international 400m, where he placed 6th in 48.39. Then in the men’s C graded 1500m, Barry McCarthy placed 14th in 4:28.38, whilst, in the D race, Alex Ainsworth placed 7th running 4:10.47. At the Dublin graded meet, once again we had three of our female athletes run in middle-distance events, after their exploits in the 3000m last weekend. This time, in the C grade 1500m, the results were reversed. Sarah Lyons won the race in a PB time of 4:51.95, followed by Kathryn Gibbons placing 3rd in 5:02.52. Sarah’s time was fast enough to give her the silver medal in the Dublin Championships as the she ran faster than all but one athlete from Donore in the B grade which was run in conjunction with the C graded race. In the D graded race, Jade Murphy placed 3rd in 5:16.56. We had three male athletes in the 1500m D race, with Jamie Renehan leading the contingent home in 2nd place in 4:48.26, followed by Cillian Traynor (5th in 4:54.64) and Gary Park (6th in 4:55.26). Karen Hughes placed 3rd in the women’s 200m B event in a time of 27.09, whilst, in the D race, Meabh Murphy took 4th spot in 29.34, followed by Grainne McGuill (5th in 30.12). Luc Culliton placed 3rd in the men’s 200m A race in a time of 22.68, whilst, in heat 1 of the D grade, Eoin Carroll took 1st place in 24.35, with young Alfie Casey doing the same in the second heat in a time of 24.24. In the field, new masters member Sean Brickell placed 4th in the discus with the 4th of his 6 throws, a distance of 34.00m. Meanwhile, Harry Moylan finished just behind Sean in 5th place with his 4th throw of 33.89m. Finally, in the Dublin Championships, Alfie Casey went on to win the men’s triple jump with his 6th leap of 11.28m, just ahead of another 16-year-old athlete, Harry Alexander, in 2nd place with a leap of 10.99m, on the first of his 6 jumps. Congrats to Sarah, Alfie and Harry on their medal success, hot on the heels of the senior gold medal won last week by another juvenile athlete, 15-year-old Ada Skrobol, in the high jump. There have been a few road races on which to report this week, as well as the annual BHAA ESB 5k Beach race that took place on Sandymount Strand on Tuesday evening. In a mixed race involving 68 runners, Ronan Walsh and his partner Claire Reidy both came home with their first cash prizes in running. Ronan placed 3rd in 19:33, whilst Claire placed 12th overall and 2nd female finisher in 21:36. In between them came Karl Walsh (5th overall and 1st M45 in 19:56), followed by Tim O’Donnell (9th and 2nd M45 in 20:45). David O’Donnell was next, placing 15th and 2nd M60 in 21:49, with Robbie Moore completing the picture, placing 37th in 25:37. On Wednesday, we had two Crusaders taking part in the iconic Clonliffe Harriers 2-miler, the oldest continuous road race in Europe, with its 135th running. In a field of 170, Karl Fitzmaurice placed 16th and 2nd M50 in 11:15, followed by Tomás Bradley (30th in 11:51). A day later, we had at least two runners in the Drivalia Sandyford 5k.
