Rain, rain, go away…

By all accounts, several of the events covered in this week’s report were conducted in damp and possibly windy conditions.

We start with the 4th Dublin graded meet of the season that took place on Wednesday evening in the Morton Stadium. Several distances were on offer, including the 100m, 800m and 5000m on the track and we had a decent representation on the night.

In the women’s grade C 800m, Jade Murphy placed 7th in 2:33.90, followed by Rachael Yorke who placed 8th in 2:35.82. Then, in the men’s grade D race of the same distance, Karl Fitzsimons placed 2nd in 2:18.68, followed by Cillian Traynor (6th in 2:23.70). In heat 2 of the A graded men’s 100m, Charlie Bastow placed 4th in 10.95, whilst in the C grade event (2nd heat) Liam Beaumont placed 4th in 11.71 and Robert Cervi took 2nd spot in the first heat of the D grade race in 12.57. Enda Clarke came away with 7th place in the men’s grade B 5000m in a time of 16:56.30, whilst Ciarain Kelly placed 2nd in the D grade race in 17:54.85.

Finally, in the field, we had two athletes competing in the hammer competition, with Daniel Murphy recording the win with a throw of 51.79m (his 6th throw), followed by Matthew Westlake who placed 7th, also with his 6th attempt, a throw of 35.44m.

We had more athletes on the track and in the field at the IMC meet at Irishtown Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Sarah Lyons recorded yet another PB in the 1500m, placing 5th in the B grade race in a time of 4:46.77. Meanwhile, Alex Ainsworth ran in the C grade event, finishing in 7th place in 4:08.72, whilst Charlotte Myers ran in the women’s A race, placing 9th in 4:30.85. Colm Parnell and Adam Shier joined a field of 19 in the men’s B grade 5000m, where Colm placed 5th in 15:11.58 and Adam, 8th in 15:20.03, whilst Brendan Glynn took 9th spot in one of the mile races with a time of 6:43.19. We may have had Crusaders take part in the two field events on offer, the long jump and shot put. However, no results appear to be available for the field events in these competitions.

For our non-track athletes, there wasn’t an enormous amount on offer this week. However, we did have participants involved in the 4-mile Grocers Run that takes place on the path around the outside of Leopardstown Racecourse on late Saturday morning, along with the Bohermeen 5k that occurred later in the day.

Altogether, at least 9 Crusaders ran in the Grocers Run with its field of 663. They were led across the line by Fiona Shine (59th overall and 8th female finisher) in a time of 28:54, and Fiona was followed by Eimear Lynch (95th and 22nd in 30:07) and by Emer Kenny (97th and 23rd in 30:30). Lisa Shine ran 32:29 for 174th and 55th places with Joy Flaherty placing 297th and 135th in 38:07, followed by Anna Shine (308th and 141st in 38:47) and Máirín Shine (323rd and 149th in 39:09). They were joined at the last minute by Aoife McCarthy (132nd and 33rd in 32:29) and Carina Davidson (240th and 102nd in 36:37), both having run the Marlay Parkrun earlier in the day.

In the evening we had at least 5 Crusaders join the field of 460 in the Bohermeen 5k. Louise O’Riordan recording a PB time of 20:37 for 140th and 22nd places. Louise was followed by Rebecca Kelly (181st and 40th in 22:12) and then by Tanja Narancic (213th and 55th in 23:22), Richard Kavanagh (247th and 2nd M70 in 24:35) and Fanny Trébouet, also with a PB result, recording a time of 24:51 for 252nd and 75th places. Further afield, One of our French exiles, Raphael Crueyze, took part in a 6k race in Martaizé, placing 2nd in a time of 21:51.

There was an IMRA race at the weekend over Galty Crossing, a distance of over 32k and with the involvement of at least two members of the club, Áine Kenny and Richie Phelan. The course was boggy in many places and the race took place in rainy conditions. Áine placed 31st and 7th and also 2nd F45 in a time of 5:01:48, whilst Richie took 43rd spot in the field of 80 in 5:13:17.

Meanwhile, Donatas Jocius was selected by Lithuania to run in the uphill event in the European senior offroad championships. Donatas ran the event with a distance of around 8.5k and a vertical climb of 1,280m, in a time of 72 minutes for 75th place, his national team placing 19th. Also, abroad, Valentin Akdim, another of our exiles in France, took part in the 105k Aspe trail race in Bedous in the French Pyrenees, where he recorded a time of 19:27.

Last Wednesday, there was an IMRA race on Scarr in Co. Wicklow. With a distance of 8.6k and a climb of 400m in difficult terrain, we had one runner in the field of 150. Barry O’Mahony placed 25th in 56:01.

Numbers in the parkruns on Saturday morning were significantly reduced in places, perhaps because of the weather.

Brian O’Kelly and Michael O’Shea joined a field of 195 in Fairview, where Brian led everyone home in 18:42, with Michael further back in 26th with a time of 22:47. Ciara Regan was a first finisher in Poolbeg, placing 21st overall in a time of 21:47.

In the event, with its reduced field of 188, Kenan Furlong placed 3rd in 18:12, followed by Stephen Hurley (5th in 18:28), Ross Neill (7th in 19:06), Joe Murphy (9th in 19:25), Ashley Hayes (11th in 20:59), Ross Potterton (18th in 21:41) Diarmuid Finan (19th in 21:44) and Ciara.

Ciara was followed by Sharon Woods (32nd and 2nd in 23:04), who was followed by Ryan Preston (58th in 24:37), Franky Keane (59th in 24:39), Kevin Lambe (68th in 25:11), Russell Murphy (73rd in 25:47), Kabir Sala (79th in 26:24), Olwyn Dunne (82nd and 15th in 26:31), Iseult Ni Chuinneagain (107th and 27th in 28:05), Ellen Walsh (116th and 33rd in 28:54), Aisling O’Riordan (122nd and 35th in 29:13), Lorraine McMahon (126th and 38th in 29:28), Maureen McGinley (142nd and 45th in 31:14), Cynthia Perucca (151st and 50th in 32:26) and Niamhy Trihy, tailwalking.

In Naas, with its field of 161, Karl Walsh placed 5th in 19:29, followed by Gill Earley (15th and 2nd in 20:29), whilst, in Malahide, Rob Cross placed 2nd in 17:31, followed by Fiona Bane (51st and 7th in 23:46). The field there measured 237. Felipe De Sousa ran 22:06 for 6th spot in Tolka Valley, with its field of 37, followed by Mairead Cashman (28th and 8th in 32:21), whilst, John O’Donnell took 6th spot in a time of 19:19 in Shanganagh. He was followed, in the field of 292, by Órlaith de Burca (172nd and 53rd in 28:58) and by Kevin Kenny (249th in 34:33). Enda Currid took on Tymon Park, placing 10th in 21:38 in a field of 79, whilst, alongside 451 other runners, Myles Nolan ran 23:02 for 70th place, Aoife McCarthy (126th and 17th in 24:55) and Carina Davidson (244th and 59th in 28:48) followed in Marlay Park.

Paul F. Kelly ran in the field of 157 in Poppintree where he placed 46th in 25:18, whilst Colm Foley ran once again in Griffeen with its field of 199, placing 43rd in 23:46. Susanne English placed 17th and 5th in 28:07 in the 41-strong field in Laytown Beach, whilst Martina White took 72nd and 22nd places in 29:42 in Porterstown with its field of 147. Niall O’Connell ran 38:33 for 100th place in the 125-strong field in Cabinteely, whilst, in Scotland, our exile there, Aidan Hudner ran 24:50 for 82nd spot in the field of 383 in Pollok, and Ceolan McMullin placed 296th in 37:51 in the 342-strong field in Galup Reserve in Perth, Western Australia.
