Relaying the News

19/10/2025

PictureCaroline Crowley
On a wet and blustery morning in Abbotstown, we fielded a senior mixed relay team in the National Senior XC Championships on the purpose-built XC course there, each member running on the familiar full 1500m loop. In a strong field where each of the runners in the winning squad from DCH broke 5 minutes for the 1500m distance with Ennis hard on their heels, our team of Ruby McMahon (6:32), Lucas Ryan (4:51), Zoe McCarroll (6:51) and Joe Murphy (5:33) placed 8th.

The day before, the latest BHAA XC races took place on the grounds of NUI Maynooth on what is essentially a flat course. The women’s 2-mile race with its field of 33 was won by Caroline Crowley in 13:05, and then in the men’s 4-mile event with its field of 75, Joe McDermott led home our contingent of at least 9 runners in 5th place in a time of 23:44. Joe also finished 1st in his M40 age category. He was followed by Joe Walsh (19th in 25:26), Karl Walsh (27th in 26:27), Ollie McGrath (28th in 26:34), Eoghan Corrigan in his first ever XC race (31st in 26:53), David O’Donnell (43rd in 28:42), Anthony Hackett (51st in 29:56), Noel Carr (60th in 31:46) and Robbie Moore (63rd in 32:20).

Further afield, we had at least three athletes take part in the 50th running of the Amsterdam marathon. Ruadhán Mac Cormaic was only two minutes off his PB, running level splits, and recording a time of 3:28:27, whilst Kevin Kenny and Djinn Von Noorden ran side by side all the way round, finishing in the same time of 4:19:20, a PB for Djinn with Kevin pacing her. Kevin ran in Chicago last week and is also intending to join the field in Dublin next week too. In Spain, two of our exiles there ran in a 10k in Madrid on Sunday morning, the Carrera de la Ciencia. Cristian Vilchez Ceballos placed 17th overall in 35:45, with Esther Requena Ferri running 40:04 for the distance. Also, in Spain, Cathal Greene ran in the Palma marathon on the island of Mallorca where, in extremely warm conditions, he finished in a time of 4:27:20. Finally, on a trip to Sicily, Brian McGuckin took part in the Palermo Half marathon where he placed 117th in 1:41:05.

Marathoners from the club made up a significant portion of the parkruns in which the club featured on Saturday morning, using the events inter alia as a means to get speed into their legs before the big day next week.

On a windy but dry morning, several podiumed including a few first finishers, among them Ciara Regan who placed 8th overall in the 237-strong field in Poolbeg and first female runner across the line in 19:26. Stephen Hurley led the field home in 1st place overall in 17:59 and he was followed in the Crusaders contingent more than 30-strong by Jan Manschot (3rd in 18:23). Conor Kilkenny followed Ciara home in 9th spot in 19:32, ahead of Donal O’Malley (11th in 19:38), Ross Neill (14th in 19:49), Kev Moore (16th in 19:55), Piarais Neary (24th in 20:34), Kenan Furlong (26th in 20:58), Tim O’Donnell (28th in 21:09) and Louise Dobbyn (30th and 3rd in 21:18), another runner on the podium there.

Mary Donnelly was next to finish (40th and 5th in 22:06), followed by Sam Osborne (43rd in 22:25), Dale Whelehan (53rd in 22:59), Paul Campbell (54th in 23:03), Chris Bannon (57th in 23:13), Orla O’Neill (63rd and 10th in 23:26), Ellen Walsh (67th and 11th in 23:32), Brian O’Neill (70th in 23:38), Tanja Narancic (79th and 13th in 23:52) and Josie Ward (83rd and 14th in 23:57), just behind.

Coming back from injury, Alby Allan was next (103rd in 25:43) and he was followed by Aitor Arribas Velasco (111th in 26:03), Franky Keane (138th in 27:28), Olwyn Dunne (140th and 36th in 27:31), Donna Barry (likely 150th overall in 27:56), John Corish (158th in 28:43), Aisling O’Riordan (182nd and 62nd in 30:22), Fanny Trébouet (187th and 67th in 30:46), Maureen McGinley (188th and 68th in 30:52), with Neil Brown and Don Anderton, tailwalking. Caroline Fleming and Joe Dunne also ran in Poolbeg. However, their participation is not recorded.

Dee Lawlor headed the field in Shanganagh in a time of 18:05. He was followed in the field of 233 by Saketh Ravuluri with a likely PB (4th in 18:47) and by John O’Donnell (5th in 19:20) with Emily Glen placing 23rd overall and 3rd female finisher in 22:13. Then, in Tolka Valley Park, Kabir Sala crossed the line ahead of 46 other runners in a time of 20:21. He was followed by Laura O’Malley (14th and 3rd in 25:45) and by Bo Chicoine (21st in 26:49). Áine Kenny placed 2nd overall and 1st female finisher in Mountbellew Forest with its field of 48 in a time of 23:19, whilst Ronan Moynihan placed 3rd in the 42-strong field in Vandeleur. Ronan’s time was 19:14.

We had runners out in force celebrating Máirín Shine’s milestone birthday in Poppintree, with Aoife McCarthy making the podium. In a field of 183, Aoife was followed by Darina Scully (40th and 6th in 24:17), Fiona Shine (82nd and 22nd in 28:12), Emer Kenny (83rd and 23rd in 28:13), Carina Davidson (84th in 28:14), Lorraine McMahon (85th and 25th in 28:16), Máirín (102nd and 31st in 29:35), Anna Shine (127th and 49th in 34:30), just ahead of Lisa Shine (128th and 50th in 34:40). Our final podium result was recorded in Brickfields, where, in a field of 102, Rob Cross placed 2nd in 18:29, and he was followed by John Fahy (4th in 19:08) and by Fiona Bane (25th and also 4th in 24:31).

We had at least 3 runners in St. Anne’s, where, in a field of 465, Ronan Walsh took 7th spot in a likely PB time of 18:58, followed by Kieran Martin (17th in 19:46) and Claire Reidy (48th and 4th in a PB time of 21:42). John Lohan headed up to Rostrevor, where alongside 55 other runners, he placed 15th in 24:15, whilst, in Tymon Park, in a field of 105 participants, Donatas Jocius and his dog Chacky placed 15th in 21:43, despite a couple of pit stops. Donatas was followed by Colm Foley (23rd in 23:08). Hannah Jones joined 162 other participants in Fairview, where she placed 99th and 26th in 30:01, whilst, in Cabinteely, Paul F. Kelly ran alongside 166 other runners to place 46th in 26:47. Áine Crotty made a welcome return to competitive running following a maternity break, down in Tramore Valley, where, in a field of 236, she placed 188th and 62nd in 33:43. Finally, we had two runners join a huge field of 1014 in York in the UK, with Kate Murray placing 340th and 67th in 25:58, followed by Mairead Cashman (672nd and 210th in 30:50) who has now completed the parkrun alphabet!
