It was another week with an abundance of race choices, not least having two BHAA races take place, one in Cork and the other close to home in Seán Moore Park in Ringsend. On Tuesday evening Michael O’Conor headed down to Cork to take part in the inaugural Apple Employees Sport and Social 5k, organised by Cork BHAA with Lizzie Lee acting as race director for the first time and Sonia O’Sullivan as race starter. By all accounts it was a success with 362 participants running on a mildly undulating loop around Hollyhill. Mike placed 13th in 17:25. Then, on Wednesday evening, 110 participants turned out for the annual BHAA DCC Irishtown 5k. In years gone by the race has variously used the Irishtown track for its start and finish as well as Ringsend Park. This year, the course was marked out on much of the Poolbeg Parkrun course, but mercifully without the Nature Reserve hill. At least 8 Crusaders participated in the event, whose race director was also a Crusader, Enda Currid, with the contingent being led home by Dee Lawlor who placed 5th (and 1st M45) in a time of 17:22, and he was followed by Karl Walsh (14th in 18:30) and then by Clare Sullivan who placed 17th overall and 2nd female finisher in 18:50, just 7 seconds behind the winner of the women’s race. Tony Hackett got the better of Robbie Moore this time, placing 48th in 21:47, with Robbie coming home in 50th spot in a time of 21:51, and they were followed by Sharon Woods (60th, 11th and 3rd F55) and by Olwyn Dunne (64th, 14th and 4th F55 in 23:22). The contingent was completed by Paul E. Kelly with a likely PB of 25:32, placing 80th. Members may be interested to know that Sean Murphy, who trains with us, placed 26th in 19:55. Thursday night saw Brian Regan on pacing duty for a friend in the Bear Race-organised Dublin Summer Night Run – Parkwest 5k with its field of 390 participants. Brian placed 61st in 23:19. On the same night a couple of families from the club took part in the Liberties 4-mile fun run. 3 of our 5 finishers in the field of 519 are young teenagers at most, with the first home being Cate Beddy who was effectively the 2nd place winner of the junior women’s category and 3rd female overall (but listed as male) in 51st place in a time of 28:48. Nina Carey was next, placing 99th, 14th female finisher and listed as 4th female junior, alongside Alice Beddy next (100th overall, 15th female and listed as 5th female junior). Peter Beddy was next across the line in 101st place alongside Joanne Carey (102nd and 16th). All four athletes were given the same chiptime of 31:53. They were followed by Ellen Walsh (137th and 19th in 33:19). We had Crusaders in at least two road races on Saturday. Two of our members took part in the Run Kilkee half marathon in Co. Clare. On a tough, hilly course, Sunil Rama placed 209th in a field of 837 finishers in a time of 1:49:33, and he was followed home by Colm Foley who placed 237th in 1:50:10. Following stewarding duties at the tope of the Nature Reserve hill in the Poolbeg Parkrun in the morning, Ciara Regan headed up to Mourne in Co. Down for the evening running of the Rossi 5k, having nbeen encouraged by her brother to run. Just coming back from injury, Ciara, who had initially just thought she would run easy, actually podiumed with a third-place finish in the women’s race in a time of 20:08. In placing 30th overall, Ciara finished only 8 spots behind her brother Paul who ran 19:19. Further afield, Andrea Rondina took part in a 10.3k race in Chiesina Uzzanese in Italy, where he placed 3rd in a time of 36:12, whilst one of our exiles in the USA ran in the New York Road Runners Championships in Manhattan’s Central Park. In warm conditions on an undulating course, Damien O’Brien ran the distance of 5 miles in 30:33. There were two races on which to report in the mountains last week. On Wednesday evening, IMRA organised a race in the Leinster Trail League. It took place in Co. Wicklow in the Glen of the Downs and involved an out-and-back with one big loop. It all took place on relatively easy marked terrain, with a climb of 292m (100m climb over 1.5k) on a course distance of 8.15k, at one stage involving running through a stone-lined tunnel. In a field of 179 finishers, Brian McGuckin placed 64th in 51:27, followed by Ian Clifford (87th in 55:06), Gavan Doherty (113th in 58:54) and Berndt Heim (169th in 72:40). Then, on Saturday morning, the 4th race in the All-Ireland Championship series was held on Log Na Coille in Co. Wicklow. On a course with moderate difficulty over nearly 10.5k with a climb of 718m, Jason Kehoe placed 14th in the field of 59 in a time of 68:05, followed by Becky Quinn who placed 22nd overall and 2nd female finisher in 71:29. The damp weather on Saturday morning in the Dublin area appears to have had an impact on participation in parkruns in the locality. Nevertheless, we saw a decent number of Crusaders taking part. Elsewhere, the fields remained consistent with usual participation. Grainne Regan was a first female finisher in the 45-strong field in Tolka Valley, placing 13th overall in a time of 25:27. Meanwhile, Ross Neill led the field of 549 home in Ormeau Park in Belfast with a time of 17:03. Meanwhile, in Poolbeg, in an event where Louise O'Riordan was director, Jade Murphy placed 23rd overall and 1st female finisher in 21:58. In a field of 162, Jade was preceded by James Cottle (15th in 21:05) and followed by Lisa Branigan (31st and 3rd in 23:19), Sharon Woods (38th and 4th in 24:01), Olwyn Dunne (49th and 5th in 24:32), Russell Murphy (52nd in 24:36), Tara Murphy (82nd and 21st in 27:27), Kevin Kenny (113th and 68th in 30:01), Niamh Trihy, guided to 140th and 55th in 35:12, and Tanja Narancic who ran with her son Ethan for a few hundred metres and then slowed to lend a helping hand to another young runner who fell on the hill in the Nature Reserve (143rd and 57th in 36:35). Our last first finisher was Michael Wycherley who ran in Chilton Fields near Stowmarket in Suffolk. In a field of 152, Michael ran 19:17. Meanwhile, Áine Crotty and Cian Coughlan joined 51 other participants in Coole, where Áine placed 6th and 2nd in 23:13 and Cian placed 7th in 23:28. Dee Lawlor and Dave Carter ran in the 165-strong field in Shanganagh where Dee placed 3rd in 17:34 and Dave ran 20:39 for 11th spot. John Lohan also appeared on the podium, this time in Mountbellew Forest where, in a field of 38, he placed 3rd in 23:38. Paul and Aoife Cowhie ran in Malahide, where, in a field of 301, Paul placed 4th in 17:49 and Aoife ran 25:57 for 109th and 25th places. Eoghan Corrigan joined 276 other runners in Griffeen Park, where he placed 11th in 20:52, whilst, Aitor Arribas Velasco ran once again in Ballincollig, where he placed 32nd in a field of 277 and in a time of 23:02. Ronan Moynihan took 5th place, running alongside 88 other runners in Mallow Castle, where he ran 21:04. Meanwhile, Luke Haran joined 80 other participants in Mungret Park, where he placed 7th in 22:49. Aoife Kelly ran in Poppintree, where, in a field of 215, she placed 109th and 26th in 29:06, whilst Darina Scully ran in Avondale Forest with its field of 118 runners. Darina finished in 31st and 8th places in 26:01. Máirín and Lisa Shine took part in the Darndale parkrun, where, in a field of 68, Máirín placed 40th and 9th in 32:37 and Lisa tailwalked, whilst Andy Deuser joined 121 other runners in Fairview, where he placed 22nd in 23:26. Carina Davidson ran 48:08 for 111th and 40th places in the 116-strong field in Cabinteely, whilst we had 3 runners in Bushy Park. In a field of 147, Anna Hernick placed 91st and 23rd in 29:59, followed by Mairead Cashman (120th and 34th in 32:12) who had a torrid journey to get to the parkrun following a flat tyre, and by Fanny Trébouet (130th and 43rd in 33:48). Finally, across the water, Rob Glascott joined 837 runners on Clapham Common where he placed 47th in 20:32, whilst Thom Martini placed 44th in 21:44 in the 577-strong field in Gunnersbury Park in Ealing, and whilst Aidan Hudner placed 65th in 24:13 in the 383-strong field in Pollok in Glasgow.
