Short and Sweet

PictureIvan Kinehan
We had some success this week in 5k races, both near and far. It started on Monday with Ivan Kinehan representing Ireland in the World Transplant Games in Dresden. Having donated a kidney to his son some years ago, Ivan ran in the transplant 40-49 5k race, winning it in 16:31. Many congrats to him.

Then, on Thursday evening we had at least 9 Crusaders take part in the Celbridge AC-organised 5k, where, inter alia, a prize of €1000 awaited the winning 4-person mixed team. Our club-mates gave it a good go and placed 5th in the end in a highly competitive environment.

In a 680-strong field of some depth in a fast and furious event, Kevin Fitzgibbon placed 24th in 16:07. He was followed by Annie Hughes in what was probably a PB time of 17:56 for 72nd place overall, 9th female finisher. Annie was followed by Doireann Hughes (85th and 12th in 18:15) and then by Felipe De Sousa (89th in the same time). Yvonne Macauley was next across the line (125th and 19th in 19:02), followed by Eoghan Corrigan (148th in19:21), Rebecca Fleming (215th and 40th in 20:59), Orla McTernan (526th and 165th in 28:16) and Paul E. Kelly (583rd in 29:56). Members may be interested to hear that Liz Maher, a GCH athlete who trains with us, placed 156th and 18th in 19:32.

The following evening we had three Crusaders take part in another 5k, this time on the beach in Portmarnock, organised by the local athletics club. Irene Gorman won the women’s race in the total field of 493, placing 29th overall in a time of 19:56. Irene was preceded across the line by Mikel Crisostomo (10th in 18:26) and followed by Kabir Sala (74th in 22:16).

Saturday saw the annual running of the Warriors Run, a hilly 14k road race in Sligo. We had at least two clubmates take part in the event involving more than 1200 runners. Shane Egan placed 16th in 64:00, followed by Ellen Walsh (585th and 80th in 99:37).

There were a couple of half marathons on offer over the weekend as well as the full marathon in Longford. In the Antrim Coast Half, with its international elite field, Lorenzo Battistin placed 237th in 84:59. Then, in the Longford Half, held in warm and humid conditions, we had at least 5 Crusaders take part. In the field of 485 finishers, our contingent was led home by Ed Forester in 26th place with a time of 88:55. Ed was followed by John Lohan (99th in 1:41:47) and then by Bivor Pradhan (292nd in 2:04:42), Tara Murphy (298th in 2:04:39) and Kate Murray (315th in 2:07:28).  In the full marathon Kevin Kenny placed around 187th in 4:31:32.

For those interested, we had several runners take part in the Dublin City triathlon on Saturday morning, one or two competing in a relay and just doing the run leg. Sebastian Hansen ran in the relay involving a 5k leg which he completed in 17:07 (his team possibly winning the relay) and Saketh Ravuluri also ran 5k, completing it in 20:22. Meanwhile, Louise O’Riordan placed 2nd in her age category and 7th female with a 10k run in the individual event in 46:35, whilst Isabelle Cairns ran the 10k in 49:02.

The midweek IMRA race took place in the Dublin mountains last Wednesday. It was an 8k fundraiser held around Lough Tay and Ballinasloe with a climb of 400m on difficult terrain. In the field of 58, we had one runner, Gavan Doherty, who placed 28th in 71:00. Elsewhere, Conor MacGuinness headed to Zermatt in Switzerland where he ran the Matterhorn Ultraks Mountain Race 32.5k, finishing it in 4:44:00.

There was plenty of action around Ireland in parkruns on Saturday morning. Lucas Ryan and Emma Rowe were first finishers in Poolbeg. Luke ran 17:23 to lead home the field of 211, whilst Emma placed 8th overall in 19:44. Lucas was followed by Kenan Furlong (2nd in 17:37) and then by James Sherry (3rd in 18:45), Joe Murphy (6th in 19:32), with Adrian Groarke (15th in 20:24) a little further back.

Next came Kabir Sala (45th in 23:09), a glutton for punishment(!), followed by Aoife McCarthy (52nd and 7th in 23:37), Ryan Preston (57th in 23;54), Dale Whelehan (67th in 24:38), Sharon Woods (68th and 13th in 24:46), Josie Ward (73rd and 14th in 24:53), Kevin Kenny (76th in 25:00), Fiona Bane (85th and 20th in 25:32), Juliane Frydenlund (97th and 23rd in 26:49), Tanja Narancic (126th and 36th in 27:50) as part of her long run, Tara Murphy (145th and 47th in 29:08), Maureen McGinley (168th and 61st in 30:58) and Cynthia Perucca (179th and 71st in 32:06).

Elsewhere, Michael O’Conr crossed the line ahead of the field of 150 in Falcarragh where he ran a time of 17:55, whilst, in Bushy Park, Kev Moore placed 1st in 19:22, followed by Mary Donnelly (15th and 2nd in 21:59) in the field of 211. Áine Kenny was another first finisher, placing 5th overall, in a field of 46 in Mountbellew Forest and a time of 21:48. Meanwhile, Ross Neill took 2nd place in Sligo where, alongside 105 other runners, he ran a time of 19:13.

David Carter ran in Oldbridge with its field of 110, where he placed 6th in a time of 20:07, whilst Karl Walsh joined a field of 194, placing 10th in 21:08. Colm Foley ran once again in Griffeen Park with its field of 186, placing 52nd in 25:38, whilst three of our clubmates ran in St. Anne’s. In a field of 427, Máirín Shine placed 318th and 114th in 32:51, alongside Emer Kenny (319th and 115th in 32:52) and ahead of Orlaith de Burca (338th and 131st in 33:49). Meanwhile, Lisa Shine ran once again on Wexford Racecourse, where, alongside 128 other participants, she placed 71st and 17th in 28:46.

Carina Davidson joined 175 other runners in Cabinteely where she took 129th and 49th spots in 35:42, whilst Lorraine McMahon took part in the Midleton Greenway parkrun with its field of 133, where she placed 70th and 16th in 30:05. Gareth Phelan has returned to parkrunning, placing 121st in 27:11 in the 268-strong field in Shanganagh, whilst, in Tolka Valley, Maria Pertl was also a lone Crusader in a field of 42, placing 33rd and 12th in 35:21. Franky Keane ran in Mullingar with its field of 147, placing 45th in 28:09, whilst Helena O’Keeffe placed 161st and 42nd in 29:24 alongside 288 other runners in Ballincollig. Also, down in Cork, Mairead Cashman ran with 57 other participants in Clonakilty where she placed 36th and 14th in 32:35, whilst, in Marlay Park, Ronan Moynihan took 19th spot in 20:30, followed by Barry O’Neill (136th in 25:59) and Kate Murray (216th and 51st in 27:54). The field there measured 510.

Finally, in Ireland, Darina Scully paced the 31 minutes runners in Malahide, placing 208th and 72nd in 31:04 in a field of 288. Meanwhile, over in the UK at least two of our exiles ran in parkruns. Richard Morrissey ran in Chalkwell Beach, where, in a field of 453, he placed 8th in 17:53, whilst Thom Martini ran in Southall with its field of 116, placing 71st in 32:15.
