Slim Pickings but Decent Results

Eva Griffin and Meabh Murphy
Racing activity was a bit thin on the ground this weekend, with many of our road runners likely saving themselves for races later in the month. Nevertheless, there are events on which to report this week, in all the likely places, on the track, on the roads, in the mountains and around the parks.

We start as usual with action on the track. This week saw the 4th meet of the Dublin Graded series that took place in the Morton Stadium in Santry. On Wednesday evening, we had 6 athletes take part in the meet. Eva Griffin ran well to win heat 2 of the women’s grade D 100m in a time of 13.80, followed by Meabh Murphy in 3rd spot in 14.47. In the first heat of the men’s grade B race of the same distance, Andrew Hooke placed 5th in 12.17. The remaining athletes ran in 3 800m races. Leading from gun to tape, Saoirse McGrath also distinguished herself with a win in the women’s grade B event. Saoirse’s winning time was 2:20.70. Meanwhile, Alex Ainsworth placed 4th in the men’s grade B event of the same distance, running a time of 2:01.31, with Karl Fitzmaurice placing 5th in 2:18.66 in the grade D race.
There were few races on the roads this week. On Wednesday, Sean Murphy took part in the first round of the 2025 Lord Mayor’s Two-Mile Series organised by Raheny Shamrock AC on the same loop as the National Road Relays near St. Anne’s Park in Raheny. In a field of 57, Sean placed 9th in 12:38.

Then, on Saturday evening, we had 3 athletes take part in the Patrick Bell and Nicky Philips 5k, organised by the local athletics club in Bohermeen. Running alongside 330 other runners, Brian Regan placed 19th in 17:01, followed by Alan Sheehy (39th in 17:54) and Eddie Nugent (72nd in 19:11).

On Sunday, Emma Rowe ran in the Castlehackett 8k near Tuam in Co. Galway where she ran on an undulating course on country roads, finishing as first female across the line in 31:10. The field there measured 180. Also, on Sunday, Enda Clarke ran in the annual Killala 10k, a race in Co. Mayo in memory of his late brother. Enda placed 3rd in 36:30 in a field of 53.

Elsewhere, on a visit to Finland, Darina Scully took part in the Bjorn Borg Helsinki Half Marathon on Saturday morning, completing the distance in 2:04:54 for 1700th and 474th places in a field of 3166. Earlier in the week, two of our London-based exiles, Kate O’Malley and Rob Glascott ran in the 2nd race of the Wimbledon Trail Series, an 8k run around Wimbledon Common. In a field of nearly 280 runners, Kate placed 60th and 6th in 33:38, followed by Rob who placed 95th in 36:21. Then, in Spain, one of our exiles there, Cristian Vilchez Ceballos took part in the Carrera Rural Benamargosa, a 9.8k trail race, which he completed in 37:46. Finally, it was great to see Sébastien Le Roy returning to competitive running. Our exile in France ran in the Semi marathon des Sables d'Olonne which took place in La Vendée north of La Rochelle. Sebastien's time was a great 86:10.

In terms of miscellaneous events, Louise O’Riordan took part in the Fastnet Triathlon, where she placed 2nd overall in her age category and completing the 5k run element in 23:02. Then, down in Bray on Saturday, we had at least 3 club mates take part in the hell and back adventure race. Kabir Sala completed the event in 99m, whilst James Moran finished in 89m and Patricia Velasquez took 3h9m.

In the mountains this week, again there were three races involving members of the club. The first took place on Wednesday evening and was a 9.9k race around Brockagh Mountain near Glendalough in Co. Wicklow. On a course involving a climb of 414m and in a field of 142, Paul McNamara placed 17th in 52:13, followed by Brian McGuckin (43rd in 57:24) and Gavan Doherty (75th in 64:11). The second race took place on Seefin Mountain in Co. Limerick on Friday evening. The event was a World Uphill Trial race involving a field of 38 tackling a climb of 350m on a course of 4k. Clare Sullivan was our lone participant, placing 24th overall, 10th female finisher and 2nd F40  in 22:55. On Saturday, Donatas Jocius placed 2nd in an 83-strong 32k race known as Galty Crossing (sic), held in the Galtee Mountains in Co. Tipperary. Donatas completed the distance in 3:36:27. He was joined by Becky Quinn who also placed 2nd (7th overall) in 3:54:49 in the women's race.

There was quite a large turnout by members of the club for Saturday morning’s parkruns and we had first finishers and podium places around the country and further afield.

Áine Kenny joined a field of 50 in Mountbellew Forest, where she placed 2nd overall and 1st female finisher in 22:16, whilst Ciara Regan placed 3rd and 1st in 19:49 in the 65-strong field in the Tubbercurry Tail parkrun. Mary Donnelly was also a first finisher, placing 15th overall in a time of 22:20 in the 221-strong field in Bushy Park, whilst Dee Lawlor headed the field home in Vandeleur (Kilrush, Co. Clare) in a time of 18:24 alongside 52 other runners. Meanwhile Kenan Furlong led home the entire field of 223, including a contingent of at least 28 Crusaders, in Poolbeg. Kenan recorded a time of 17:25, and he was followed by Stephen Hurley (2nd in 17:29) and then by Aaron Cashman, recently returned from Australia and now based in Co. Wexford (4th in 17:39), Jan Manschot (9th in 18:53), Simon Kenny (10th in 19:21), just ahead of Ross Neill (11th in 19:41) and Adrian Groarke (13th in 19:54).

Further back came Kabir Sala (30th in 21:12), and he was followed by Fergal Morrissey (45th in 22:32), Jade Murphy (47th and 2nd female finisher in 22:51), Josie Ward (58th and 6th in 23:33), Tanja Narancic, in her 100th parkrun (68th and 8th in 24:06), Neil Brown (80th in 24:56), just ahead of Franky Keane (101st in 26:05) and David Pepper (102nd in 26:07). Further back came Iseult Ni Chuinneagain (111th and 24th in 26:44), with Charles Cartledge just behind (124th in 27:46). Charles was followed by Aisling O’Riordan (138th and 37th in 28:24), Fanny Trébouet (149th and 42nd in 28:54), Una McCullagh (159th and 49th in 29:19), Djinn Von Noorden (163rd and 52nd in 29:50), Ellen Walsh (164th and 53rd in 29:55), alongside Kevin Kenny (165th in 29:56), then followed by Maureen McGinley (172nd and 60th in 30:29), Mari Hansen (179th and 64th in 30:59), Marie-Claire Daly (191st and 72nd in 33:22), young Simón Zoladz (202nd in 36:25) just ahead of Cynthia Perucca (203rd and 80th in 36:27). Further afield, one of our exiles in London, Jeanie Watson, ran in a parkrun in Penticton, British Columbia, Canada, where she was a first finisher, placing 2nd overall in a field of 40 and in a time of 21:49.

Another podium place was recorded by Paul F. Kelly in Poppintree with its field of 186. Paul placed 3rd in 19:41, followed by Aoife Kelly (94th and 25th in 29:35). Sarah Lyons took 14th and 3rd spots in Mullingar alongside 133 other runners. Sarah’s time was 22:05. Meanwhile, Sean Murphy placed 2nd in 20:05 in the New Ross parkrun in a field of 103, whilst Tom Conlon joined a modest field of 16 in the Three Rivers Heritage Trail parkrun near Pittsburgh where he also placed 2nd in a time of 21:37.

David Carter ran once again in Shanganagh, where he took 10th spot in 19:30, alongside 265 other participants, whilst Luke Haran recorded a time of 22:05 for 11th place in the 144-strong field in Mungret Park in Limerick. Kate Murray placed 101st and 11th in 23;57 in the 515-strong field in Marlay Park, whilst John Lohan also placed 11th in Coole with its field of 81 runners. John’s time was 22:00.

Karl Walsh ran in Naas once again, where, in a field of 232, he placed 17th in 21:03, whilst, in Malahide, Aoife McCarthy took 82nd and 18th spots in 22:47 in a field 398 strong. On a trip to London, Olwyn Dunne enjoyed a parkrun in Southwark alongside 589 other runners, where she placed 213th and 30th in 25:13, whilst Martina White took on Porterstown, where she placed 116th and 55th in a field of 148.

In Brickfields, Chris Bannon joined 102 other runners, where he placed 28th in 24:19, whilst we had 3 participants in Cabinteely. In a field of 180, Máirín Shine placed 93rd and 23rd in 31:06, alongside Lisa Shine (94th and 24th in 31:07), with Carina Davidson tailwalking. Finally, one of our exiles in Australia, Deirdre Kennedy, ran once again in Centennial park in Sydney, where, in a field of 383, she placed 261st in 29:58.
