Slim Pickings This Weekend

16/11/2025

Storm Claudia put paid to racing on Saturday morning, particularly affecting parkruns on the east coast and such events as the Clontarf half marathon which had to be cancelled at the last minute. Surprisingly, again at least one XC event was also cancelled.

Nevertheless, a bit of order was restored over the weekend and, as one went around the country, there were still races in which athletes could take part.

The standout event of the weekend was the brilliantly-named Celebration of Life 5k organised by the Cork BHAA on Sunday. The overall race with its complement of 424 competitors, was won by ex-Crusader Shane Collins in a time of 15:10, whilst the women’s race was won by our own Orla Drumm in a super time of 17:37, placing 33rd overall. If only the BHAA in Dublin could be blessed with fields like they regularly have in Cork.

Also, on Sunday, Emily Glen headed down to Dungarvan in the Deise where, in a field of 127, she ran in the West Waterford AC-organised Brickley 5k, placing 39th overall and 7th female finisher in a time of 22:29, on an east-west out-and-back course. Then, up in Donabate, we had 3 runners in the annual LSA Peninsula 4-miler with its field of 255 participants. Brendan Glynn was our first athlete home, placing 189th in 33:25, followed by Lorraine McMahon (245th and 61st in 34:41) and Orla McTernan (270th and 79th in 35:42). The almost fully looped course ended with an uphill finish.

Further afield, two of our exiles in France were in action on Sunday. Florian Mormont ran in the Semi-marathon du Bois du Boulogne in Paris, finishing in a time (quite possibly a PB) of 1:40:09. Meanwhile, Raphael Crueyze ran in Choisy-le-Roi, Val de Marne, in the National Cross there, running 8.7k in 35:02. We also had two exiles, now based in the UK, who ran in races there over the weekend. Kate O’Malley ran in the Fulham 10k, finishing in a time of 40:02, whilst Toby Benham ran in the Coventry 10k placing 2nd in a time of 35:37.

There were at least a few parkruns that were held around the island on Saturday morning. Aoife McCarthy took part in the Progression Parkrun held in Mountjoy prison. It enjoyed a field of 49 and Aoife placed 14th and 3rd in 22:48. Máirín Shine joined 164 other runners in Naas, where she placed 154th and 50th in 36:25. Meanwhile, Michael O’Shea ran in Templemore, where, in a field of 102, he placed 6th in 21:16. Then, Mairead Cashman ran in a modest field of 36 in Oldbridge, placing 32nd and 6th in 32:28.
Fiona and Lisa Shine headed to a concert in Aberdeen and whilst there they took part in the parkrun there. In a field of 387, Fiona placed 59th and 7th in 22:21, followed by Lisa who placed 166th and 33rd in 27:14. Down under, two of our exiles in Australia also ran. Kris Ryan ran once again in Paradise Point in Queensland where, in a field of 465, she placed 96th and 21st in 24:42, whilst, in Perth in Western Australia, Christina Campbell ran in Margaret River, where she placed 91st and 33rd in 32:02.
