…but not all. We are enjoying extremely mild weather in the country for the start of December and, over in Lanzarote last week, runners from the club enjoyed probably the hottest conditions for racing there in a long time, if ever. Some of us have been heading over to Club La Santa on the northern coast of the island for the International Running Challenge every year that it has been possible to travel since 2012 and have not known such warm conditions like the ones we experienced this week. More of that much further below, but we start with the National Novices XC that took place a couple of hours drive from Dublin down in Tramore, Co. Waterford on the infield of the racecourse there, on Sunday afternoon. The women’s race that went off first was conducted over 4k with a total field of 120, whilst the men had to run 6k and enjoyed a field of 217. The course was slightly undulating with a climb of about 15m on each of the laps, which had tight turns in places on a twisty route with two longish straights and quite muddy in places. The course had the appearance of being shoehorned into the space available. We fielded a team of 7 women in the 4k and they were led home by Orla Walsh, her first time representing the club in XC, placing 34th in 16:27. Kathryn Gibbons was next (38th in 16:31), with Ciara Regan (59th in 17:11) and Isabelle Cairns (63rd in 17:21) slightly further back. The four scorers placed 6th out of 16 in the race. Ciara Lynch came next, in 94th place in a time of 18:45, followed by Darina Scully (118th in 21:12) and Carina Davidson (120th in 30:38), who, on top of being a little under the weather also had the unfortunate experience of joining the field late and then losing her spikes in the mud. The men’s 6k race enjoyed an 11-man contingent of two teams from the club (6 and 5). Again, as with the women, it was 4 to score from each team. Andrea Rondina crossed the line in 60th place in 20:59, followed by Barry McCarthy (72nd in 21:21), Vinnie McGuinness (79th in 21:31), Brian Regan (116th in 22:16) and John Mulvihill (119th in 22:20). Andrea, Barry, Vinnie and John were scorers for the A team and placed 17th of 29. John was followed home by a group, relatively tightly bunched, of Kevin Fitzgibbon (133rd in 22:38), Henry Griffin (139th in 22:44) and Thomas Vogée (142nd in 22:49) and they were followed by Joe McDermott (in his 5th race in 7 days and having arrived back in Dublin less than 24 hours earlier) in 159th spot in a time of 23:06, Felipe De Sousa (185th in 24:25) and Daniele Rietti (215th in 29:30). A noble effort by all who ran! Earlier in the day, the BHAA continued with its switch to Sunday running with a combined 6k event sponsored by Revenue and held in a new venue, McGee Park in Tallaght. On a largely flat three lap course around GAA pitches, we had at least 5 runners in the smallish field of 95. David O'Donnell was first to finish in a time of 27:05 for 43rd place and he was followed closely by Neil Brown with a time of 27:12 for 46th place. Neil was followed by Kate Murray (73rd overall, 14th female finisher and 4th in her age category in 29:39) and then by Olwyn Dunne (83rd, 20th and 4th in 30:28) and by Mairead Cashman (98th and 33rd in 38:56). The Waterford Half marathon took place on Saturday morning, and, for once at least, rather like the so-called half marathon in the International Challenge (that usually measures around 20k), this race measured short by around 300m. We had at least one runner in the field of 2165 finishers. Maria Kennedy placed 1,558th overall (446th female finisher) in 2:01:25. Further afield over the weekend, we had a few runners in the Valencia marathon. Going into the race in strong form, Alby Allan had hoped to improve upon his 2:58 PB from Dublin recently, but, unfortunately experienced severe cramps and had to pull out after 23k, likewise, our Australian exile, Marty James survived to 30k. In conditions that started out cool enough and progressively heating up, but, as with Lanzarote, high levels of humidity, Kevin Kavanagh took on pacing duties for a friend, finishing strongly in 3:34. Members may be interested to learn that two recent ex-members of the club, Kieran Little and Steven Walker, ran respectively 2:29:57 and 2:59:29, both PBs, alongside our exile in Switzerland, Lukasz Batruch, who recorded a PB time of 2:58:41, his first time breaking 3 hours. On the day, Irish international Fionnuala McCormack recorded a PB time of 2:23:46. Also, in Spain, Mikel Crisostomo ran in the Cursa Joan Bouin 5k in Barcelona where he ran a PB time of 18:24. Then, in Portugal, Doireann Hughes joined a field of 2885 in the Corrida dos Descobrimentos 10k, where on a flat, maybe net downhill, course she placed 46th overall and 2nd female finisher in a time of 37:48. So, back to the International Running Challenge, a series of 4 races of different distances and terrain resembling scenes from Jurassic Park at times, conducted back-to-back over four days. The event is preceded by a night run that does not count towards the cumulative time which determines overall winners, individual, team and age category. As mentioned, conditions were exceedingly warm, with races starting at around 18-19 degrees, and finishing at around 23-25 degrees, but also with high levels of humidity on courses with no shade. Although there were some excellent performances, there were several DNFs in the overall fields each day because of the conditions. On the last day, the half marathon (20k) which, thankfully started early, we even experienced towards the end the effects of a sirocco from the Sahara, the strong easterly wind blowing sand all the way from Morocco, affecting breathing conditions and leaving a fine coat of dust and sand everywhere. The phenomenon is known locally as a “calima”. 9 of the 24 runners from the club who ran in at least one race during the week, ran in the race series, and our two teams, one male and the other female, with 3 to score, both placed 2nd overall. Our men’s team was led by Colm Parnell who convincingly won each of the 4 races on offer, with Eugene McDonough and Joe McDermott supporting, whilst our women’s team was led by guest runner Catherine Thornton who won 3 of the 4 races, and was overall female winner of the event, being supported by Maeve Lochrie and Tara Gavin as overall scorers by the end. 240 runners overall contested the 4 races, and it was extremely competitive in nearly all the age categories, among the Irish, British, Danish, Dutch, French, Spanish and German clubs represented. There were several Irish clubs involved, including Sportsworld, Tullamore, Laragh and Ballyskenach. The 4k night run (conducted on a lap of a lagoon that borders Club La Santa), which took place on the eve of the challenge, enjoyed a field of 433, many of them locals from the island. It was joined by Philip Matthews who placed 53rd in 17:42 and he was followed by Tara who placed 80th overall (17th female and 4th in her age category) in 19:11, and then by Mairead Cashman who placed 211th (76th female and 5th in her age category). The first day of the challenge involved a 10k race on tarmac conducted over 3 laps of the lagoon. This year, unusually, there was little wind, but by the end of the 2nd lap, runners were feeling the high humidity. As a consequence, 3 of our runners joined a list of those who were unable to finish, and several of our numbers were feeling distinctly wobbly at the end because of the conditions. Colm ran 32:10 for the win in a field of 398, followed by Joe (15th overall and 4th in the age category in 36:16), Catherine (18th and 1st female in 36:32), Eugene (21st and 4th in 37:10), Eddie Nugent (64th in 41:41), Maeve (66th, 6th female and winner of her age category), James Cottle (71st and 1st in 42:17), Simon Everard (82nd in 43:14), Tara (95th, 13th and 3rd in 44:22), Dee Ni Chearbhaill (136th, 25th and 4th in 48:13), Philip (158th in 50:00), Fiona Shine (171st, 41st and 4th in 51:36) and Máirín Shine (285th and 100th in 61:31). The second race, a 13k run from sea level up about 6.5k to the ridge of a volcano and back in a loop on road, volcanic rubble and sand, involved a total field of 407, on a relatively calm late morning. Once again, Colm (1st in 47:02) and Catherine (10th overall in 53:19) dominated. Eugene placed 12th and 2nd in his age category in 53:32), followed by Joe (15th and 4th in 54:10), Tara (77th, 14th and 3rd in 66:00), Emily Glen (114th , 21st and 3rd in 69:59), Dee (118th and 24th in 70:21), Louise (132nd, 29th and 3rd in 72:03), Brendan Glynn (149th in 73:58), Robbie Moore (158th in 74:57) and Lisa Shine (305th in 95:20). In between Louise and Brendan came Maeve, Simon and James. James had been leading his age category by some margin with 5k to go on the downhill but was overcome by the heat of the day pulling up temporarily, and both Maeve and Simon stopped, sacrificing their races, to help him close out the event in a mixture of fits and starts. James ended in 6th place in his age category in 136th place (72:21), about 6.5 minutes behind the new leader of the category. As a consequence, unfortunately, both Maeve and Simon also finished well off the times they would have expected, with Maeve placing 133rd, 30th and 4th in 72:05 and Simon running alongside James at the finish (a sprint!) in 135th with a time of 72:20. Cría Dowling also ran (and experienced a fall), but her time was not recorded. There were 374 finishers in the beach 5k that took place down on the south of the island in Puerto del Carmen. Those of us who have run the race before would have been familiar with the soft, deep sand at the turns on the 2-lap course. However, they might have expected to have large swathes of hard sand at the back of the beach as well as a wider space of less soft sand on the shoreline. In addition, the race has rarely measured 5k, last year’s being short by nearly 500m. This year, we had to run closer to the intended distance on sand that was as soft and as deep as ever in more places than usual. At least some of us were able to hang around afterwards to enjoy a refreshing dip in the Atlantic. Colm won in 17:33, followed by Eugene (13th and 3rd) in 20:08. Joe was next (17th and 4th in 20:23), followed by Catherine who this time placed 30th and 3rd in 21:21. Simon came home next (49th in 22:31), followed by Eddie (63rd in 23:10), Maeve (92nd, 15th and 2nd in 24:55), Tara (96th, 17th and 3rd in 25:01), with James, feeling the effects of the previous day (107th and 4th in 25:26) and Dee (122nd, 21st and 4th in 26:37) completing the contingent. The 4th race was the 20k from the village of Tinajo south of the resort and up in the hills down to finish on the track at the club, run on a mix of road and trail and a net downhill. Despite this, all the runners felt the going tough at around 13k as the route took us through and away from La Santa village on a climb up to close to the top of the second day’s ridge. The strong wind was in our faces and carrying a lot of Saharan dust. There were many who took to walking briefly at this point as a result. Once again, Colm won the 292-strong race, in a time of 69:34, followed by Eugene (17th and 4th in 80:09), Catherine (19th and 1st in 80:33), ahead of Joe (20th and 3rd in 80:43) in a sprint on the track. Eddie was next (56th in 91:56), followed by Maeve (58th, 9th and 1st in 92:46), Karl Walsh (61st in 93:28), Simon (79th in 98:10), Tara (89th, 15th and 4th in 1:40:18), James (105th and 2nd after walking for about 2k in 1:44:40), Dee (110th and 21st in 1:45:38), Emily (112th m 22nd and 3rd in 1:45:57), Louise (143rd, 37th and 3rd in 1:50:29), Brendan (151st in 1:52:20) and Robbie (161st in 1:54:51). Cría ran alongside Louise, but once again her time was not recorded. Once the smoke had cleared, overall Maeve finished 3rd in her age category, with Tara, Eugene and James all placing 3rd, the last only 2 seconds (over 48km) behind 2nd place. Catherine and Colm were overall winners. It was another epic contest and many of us intend to be back for next year for another crack! We enjoyed a plethora of riches in the parkruns this weekend, with more than our usual number of first finishers and podium places. In the conditions of Saturday morning, kinder than last week, participant numbers were back to normal too. In a field of 209 runners in Griffeen Park in Lucan, Caroline Crowley placed 5th overall and first finisher in 19:20, followed by her husband Lucan native Eoghan Corrigan who placed 15th in 20:30. In placing 11th overall in a field of 285 in Shanganagh and in a time of 20:28, Miriam Logan was also a first finisher, followed across the line by Olwyn Dunne who placed 82nd and 14th in 25:03 in her 200th parkrun. Derek Lawlor led the entire field of 158 home in Cabinteely, with a time of 18:39 and he was followed by David Carter (6th in 20:53) and Carina Davidson (120th and 43rd in 34:23). Jade Murphy was our sole participant in the 65-strong field in Brickfields where she placed 7th overall and first finisher in 22:01, whilst we had an enormous showing in Poolbeg. In a field of 215 there, Aoife Quigley placed 15th and first finisher in a time of 20:06. In a contingent of at least 25 Crusaders, Aoife was preceded by Luke Clarke (3rd in 17:41), Stephen Hurley (4th in 18:11), Raphael Crueyze (6th in 18:34), Kenan Furlong (7th in 18:36) and Tom Gleeson (9th in 19:45). Behind Aoife came Zlatko Kulic (18th in 20:39), Niall O’Connell making a welcome return to competitive running (34th in 22:14), John Lohan (37th in 22:27), Daniel Gleeson (52nd in 23:03), Fiona Bane (58th and 4th in 23:27), Franky Keane (67th in 24:05), Tanja Narancic (69th and 6th in 24:11), Charles Cartledge (84th in 24:47), Lisa Branigan (98th and 18th in 25:19), Gillian Curran (111th and 22nd in 26:05), Aoife Cowhie (114th and 23rd in 26:18), Djinn Von Noorden (118th and 26th in 26:44), Tara Murphy (120th and 28th in 27:16), Anna Hernick (135th and 35th in 27:51), Maureen McGinley (158th and 49th in 29:08), Lorraine McMahon (166th and 54th in 29:43), Kevin Kenny (168th in 29:58), Mairead Cashman (174th and 59th in 30:24) and Cynthia Perucca (184th and 66th in 31:29). Other podium places went to the likes of Ciaran Diviney (2nd in a field of 55 in a time of 18:18 in Mallow Castle), Laura O’Malley (8th and 2nd in a time of 24:07 in the 38-strong field in Tolka Valley Park) and Lorraine Healy (12th and 2nd in 22:25 in Templemore alongside 95 other runners). Áine Kenny headed to Cardiff to run in a field of 703, where she placed 139th and 26th in a time of 23:15, whilst Ryan Hoey ran in the Bundoran Promenade parkrun, where, in a field of 87, he placed 15th in 24:51. We had 3 runners take part in the Univ. of Galway parkrun, with Aitor Arribas Velasco best placed in 39th spot in a field of 93 and in a time of 26:12. Aitor was followed by Áine Crotty (51st and 10th in 28:03) and Cian Coughlan (52nd in 28:09). Kev Moore and Mary Donnelly were late to the start line in Marlay Park with its field of 557. Kev placed 224th in 27:13, with Mary further back (274th and 84th in 28:23). Kabir Sala ran in Bushy Park where he placed 19th in a field of 173 and in a time of 22:35, whilst Darina Scully pushed her buggy around River Valley Park once again where she placed 76th and 30th in a field of 104 in a time of 34:50. Martina White joined 125 other participants in Porterstown where she tailwalked, whilst Toby Benham ran alongside 186 other runners in Tramore Valley, Cork, placing 48th in 23:51. Grainne Regan, who is pregnant, nobly ran in the 481-strong field in St. Anne’s where she placed 199th and 49th in 26:37, whilst Susanne English took to the paths around Malahide, where, in a field of 265, she placed 55th and 15th in 24:01. Aoife Kelly joined 156 other runners in Poppintree where she placed 102nd and 37th in 31:13, whilst Gavan Doherty headed to Sendling near Munich where, in the Westpark parkrun, he placed 47th in a field of 183 and in a time of 23:19. Finally, our exiles were in action too. Kate O’Malley ran in the huge 1142-strong field in Battersea Park where she placed 109th and 10th in 19:14, whilst Rob Glascott ran on Clapham Common with 752 other participants, placing 50th in 21:17 and Thom Martini placed 93rd in 23:24 in Gunnersbury Park where the field measured 588.
