It was literally the calm before the storm for all events that took place between Saturday morning and Sunday afternoon. Mercifully, our runners in Holland were not adversely affected by Storm Ashley (although Portsmouth’s Great South Run on Sunday morning was cancelled out of an abundance of caution) which presumably would hit later. Saturday morning’s races and parkruns enjoyed excellent conditions largely in the sun. On Saturday morning Ellen McHugh ran with 544 other runners in the Outrun Hunger 5k, set on an out-and-back north-south course from Oak Park in Oakpark or Painestown in County Carlow. Ellen ran 30:52, placing 255th overall and 81st female finisher. Also, finishing in Carlow on the same day, we had a runner in the final leg of the Irish Ultra Mountain Championships. The race, along the Wicklow Way, measured over 127k from Marlay Park in Dublin south to Clonegal, with a climb in excess of 3,665m. Donatas Jocius ran well to finish in 8th place of the 67 who were able to complete the distance, his time being 16:28:09. On the same day, Ronan Moynihan ran in a GAA-club-organised race, the Dromtarriffe 5k between Mallow and Millstreet in Co. Cork, where he recorded a time of 19:20. Results have yet to be published, and, if and when done, the report will be updated. We had 4 runners in Amsterdam for the marathon there on Sunday. There had been forecasts of strong winds affecting the race, particularly on the long north-south out-and-back element (on an otherwise flat but twisty course conducted on lots of quite narrow paths) along the banks of the River Amstel. On the day, though, conditions were much more benign than in Ireland with Storm Ashley battering our shores. The temperature at the start was around 13 degrees and the southerly wind was around 16kph. In a field measuring nearly 17,000, Vinnie McGuinness ran a brilliant race, finishing with his second fastest time in a marathon of 2:29:20, 54th place overall, second Irishman home and 1st M40, running just a 1-minute positive split. Recording almost even splits, Aaron Farrell broke 3 hours for the first time, finishing in a PB time of 2:59:46 and he was followed by Miriam Logan who was able to manage a severe bout of sinusitis, finishing in 3:37:57 and by Emer Kenny who also ran well for her 3:44:41. In much stronger winds (around 32kph), Alex Ainsworth and Raphael Crueyze joined a field of 214 in total for the 133rd running of the Clonliffe 2-mile road race, conducted around the outside of Glasnevin Cemetery and the Botanic Gardens on a relatively flat course. Alex placed 7th in a PB time of 9:52, whilst Raphael, in what surely must have been his first ever 2-miler, ran 11:51 for 48th spot. Further afield, just over a year following heart surgery, one of our Canada-based exiles, Ian Kinsella, ran in the Toronto Half marathon on Sunday, where he recorded an incredible time of 83:46, whilst, one of our London-based exiles, Thom Martini, ran in the Cabbage Patch 10, a 10-mile race between Richmond and Kingston-upon-Thames, which he completed in 79 minutes. Dublin marathon preparation saw many of our clubmates pounding the paths of the various parkruns on Saturday morning, with numerous marathon plans calling for a 5k shakeout on the penultimate weekend before the big day. As a consequence, numbers were generally higher across the board and, also, because so many Crusaders were involved, we did rather well on the podiums too. It was great to see the return for a short visit to these shores of Cristian Vilchez Ceballos and his partner Esther Requena Ferri, two of our Spanish exiles. And they did themselves proud in St. Anne’s where both were first finishers in an event involving 472 runners. Cristian led the field home in 16:49, followed by Esther who placed 10th overall and 1st female finisher in 19:12. Next came Mikel Crisostomo (11th in 19:16), followed by Michael Fitzsimons (12th in 19:21), Zlatko Kulic (23rd in 20:18), Michael Maughan (97th in 24:24), Grainne Regan (121st and 19th in 25:16) and Evelyn Neary (217th and 53rd in 28:18). There was a clean sweep of both men’s and women’s podiums in Poolbeg, where at least 32 of our runners turned out. First across the line came Kevin Fitzgibbon in a field of 240 with a time of 17:09. Kevin was followed by Dee Lawlor (2nd in 17:51), Ross Neill (3rd in 17:54), Orla Walsh (6th and first female finisher in 18:50), Simon Kenny (7th in 18:51) right behind, Alby Allan (9th in 19:28), Kieran Martin (10th in 19:29), Adrian Groarke (16th in 19:43), Ciara Regan (20th and 2nd in 19:52), Phelim Murray (22nd in 20:23), just ahead of Aoife Hoare in our final podium position (24th and 3rd in 20:32). David Timoney came next (28th in 21:16), followed by James Cottle (33rd in 22:04), including the parkrun in an otherwise long run at just below marathon pace, John Corish (54th in 23:40), Josie Ward (59th and 11th in 23:48), John Lohan (65th in 23:59), Luke Clarke (78th in 24:31), Bo Chicoine (79th in 24:33), Tanja Narancic (95th and 19th in 25:03), another runner incorporating the 5k into a long run, just ahead of Olwyn Dunne (99th and 21st in 25:23) who is planning for both Dublin, and a week later, NYC, marathons, Ellen Walsh (102nd and 24th in 25:34), Franky Keane (103rd in 25:36), Sophia Morgan (108th and 25th in 26:09), who is successfully racing herself back to fitness, Emily Glen (139th and 40th in 27:40), also on a long run, James Bradshaw (140th in the same time as Emily), Amy Forde (145th and 42nd in 27:52), Maureen McGinley (151st and 46th in 28:07), Alan Martin (157th in 28:36), Kevin Kenny (183rd in 29:57), pacing the 30-minute runners, Lorraine McMahon (187th and 65th in 30:25), Cynthia Perucca (197th and 74th in 31:39) and Mari Hansen with her buggy (220th and 88th in 34:17). We had first finishers in other events on the morning too. Ger Forde led the field of 124 across the finish line in Naas with a time of 18:15, whilst Mark Culleton did the same in Portumna, where the field measured a more modest 29 and Mark’s time was 19:26. In finishing in 8th place overall in the 423-strong field in Marlay Park, Julie McGrath also was a first female finisher in 18:59, whilst Kev Moore and Mary Donnelly were joint first finishers in Bushy Park. In a field measuring 185, Kev ran 20:15, whilst Mary ran 22:50, placing 14th overall. Kabir Sala came in further back in 128th spot in a time of 31:42. Toby Benham placed 7th in the 341-strong field in Worthing, England in a time of 19:13, whilst Liam O’Brien, who is preparing for both Dublin and Athens marathons two weeks apart, placed 9th in Lees Road, Ennis, in a time of 21:49 alongside 83 other participants. Our exile in San Francisco, Cormac McGuire, made a visit home and included a run in Tolka Valley Park where he placed 12th in 24:46, whilst Colm Foley ran 23:39 in Griffeen Park along with 172 other runners, placing 28th in the process. Darina Scully and Garret Connolly were those with buggies once again. Darina ran 30:17 for 67th and 15th places in the 123-strong field in River Valley, whilst Garret placed 85th in 31:56 in Fairview with its field of 134. Lisa Shine joined 106 fellow parkrunners in Clonmel, where she placed 58th and 16th in 31:38, whilst Mairead Cashman took 43rd and 18th in a time of 30:03 in a field of 70 runners. Susanne English was our sole representative in Malahide, where she took 96th and 22nd spots in 25:07 in a field of 340, whilst Martina White placed 158th and 64th in 34:34 in the 200-strong field in Porterstown. Our newly-based London exile, Jeanie Watson, ran once again in Finsbury Park, where, in a field of 590, she placed 100th and 11th in 23:35, whilst, closer to home, we had two runners in Cabinteely. In a field of 163, Stephen Mulligan placed 33rd in 25:11, with Carina Davidson taking 137th and 63rd spots in 43:38. Áine Crotty and Cian Coughlan ran together in Athlone, where Áine placed 37th and 12th in 26:09, with Cian finishing right behind in 26:11 for 38th place. The field there measured 104. Finally, we had runners in Shanganagh and Poppintree. In Shanganagh, Orlaith de Burca and Máirín Shine joined a field of 253 runners in total, where Orlaith placed 145th and 45th in 28:29 and Máirín finished in 219th and 81st places in 34:11, whilst, in Poppintree, Aoife and Paul F. Kelly ran alongside 201 other participants, with Paul placing 38th in 24:28 and Aoife placing 111th and 28th in 30:16. Clonliffe Harriers 2-mile road race (214) Overall place Name Cat.
