![]() For some people, 10-mile races are the sweet spots of longer distance running. With times around the hour mark, then one can run close to threshold pace and feel that the distance is a mixture of anaerobic and aerobic effort. Sunday provided two such events and members of the club took advantage of both, each of which would be considered iconic and ,following the Raheny 5, a great way to test one’s fitness in preparation for both long and short distances to come during the Spring. The 33rd running of the John Treacy Dungarvan 10-mile race took place on a blustery, chilly and damp day, the wind mostly helpful until the last 3k or so on the largely anti-clockwise course. One of the notable results from the race was that of women’s race winner, ex-Crusader and international athlete Niamh Allen, who broke the course record in 52:50, placing 12th overall in a field of 2841 finishers. Ger Forde was our first athlete home, placing 50th in 57:43. Brendan Murphy followed shortly after, in 53rd in a time of 57:55, with Michael Wycherley (62nd in 58:07 and effectively 2nd M50) and Alban Coghlan (67th in 58:38) not too far back. Michael Kiely guided Thurles visually-impaired runner Declan Ryan to 69th place in 58:40 (Michael’s time not being recorded), with Joe McDermott next in 75th place (58:55). Ciarain Kelly placed 79th in 59:00, followed by Michael O’Conor (254th in 63:58), Seán Murphy (494th in 69:22) and Miriam Logan who, thoroughly enjoying the experience, recorded a PB time of 69:16 for 495th place overall and 47th female finisher. Phelim Murray was not too far behind in 554th place in 69:48, with Gill Earley next (613th and 75th in 71:33), followed by Dee Ni Chearbhaill (756th and 99th in 73:48), Louise O’Riordan (813th and 111th in 74:25), Emily Glen (1046th and 166th in 77:50 as part of a longer run) and Alan Martin who also recorded a PB in placing 1834th in 87:48. On the same day, we had at least 9 of our club-mates take part in the Trim 10 miler. This race is younger than the Dungarvan event but has become a firm favourite. In a field of 1803, Kieran Martin was our first runner home, placing 119th in 61:31, just behind ex-Crusader Catherine Thornton who trains with us. Catherine placed 91st overall and 3rd female finisher in 60:23. Next across the line was Nina Holmes who placed 332nd and 33rd in 68:01, followed by Rebecca Fleming in a PB time of 71:54 for 480th and 65th places. Aoife Quigley followed just behind (484th and 66th 72:07). The contingent was completed by Olwyn Dunne, pacing the 80 minutes runners (851st and 194th in 79:38), followed by Kate Murray (1200th and 358th in 87:05), Joe Dunne, pacing the 100-minute runners (1611th in 99:57) and Sharon Woods (988th and 252nd in 82:50). The women's team of Nina, Rebecca, Aoife and Olwyn placed 12th as a team in a competition involving 81 teams. Further afield, on Saturday morning, two of our exiles in Sydney ran in the Sun 10k. There was also a 7k race and between them there were at least 10,000 runners. Maurice Kelter placed 20th in 34:38, followed not too far behind by Fearghal O’Hare who placed 31st in 35:05. Then, on Sunday, in Murcia, Spain, our French exile, Charles-Edouard Cattier, who now lives in Madrid, ran in the marathon there, completing it in 3:23:48. In terms of mountain running this weekend, the IMRA caravan visited Howth, for a 7.35k run involving a climb of 222m. Gavan Doherty was our sole representative, placing 82nd in a field of 185 and in a time of 45:58. After last week’s debacle with the weather and many cancellations, there was a decent turnout this week in parkruns across the board. We had a couple of first finishers. In Fairview Ruben Vega led the field of 181 across the line in 18:34. He was followed by Kieran Martin (11th in 20:25) and Chris Bannon (59th in 25:24). Then, in Hartstown, Laura Flannelly (née Schwirz) shared the spoils with ex-Crusader Frank Hague by placing 11th in a field of 81 and in a time of 21:56 to be first female finisher. Elsewhere, we had a few podium and 4th place finishes. Eoghan Corrigan placed 2nd in a time of 20:03 in the 103-strong field in Brickfields. He was followed by Kate Murray (39th and 9th in 27:19). Meanwhile Ciara Regan took 2nd place (9th overall) to her sister Cathy in a time of 25:42 in the Tubbercurry Trail parkrun. As usual, our largest contingent ran in Poolbeg. At least 20 runners from the club took part and they were featured Ross Neill who placed 8th in 18:45, followed by Kenan Furlong (11th in 19:04), Kabir Sala (23rd in 20:55), Zlatko Kulic (25th in 21:19), Jade Murphy (31st and 3rd in 21:56), Aoife McCarthy (39th and 4th in 22:33), John Lohan (40th in 22:36), Louise Dobbyn (45th and 5th in 23:04), Kevin Lambe (51st in 23:33), Sharon Woods (53rd and 6th in 23:45), Kevin Kenny (62nd in 24:11), Bo Chicoine (80th in 24:55), David Timoney (98th in 26:14), Josie Ward (106th and 19th in 26:46), just ahead of Tanja Narancic (107th and 20th in 28:46) who combined the parkrun with a much longer run as usual. Tara Murphy came next (146th and 34th in 28:26), just ahead of Amy Forde (147th and 35th in 28:28), Paula Bradshaw (162nd and 44th in 28:51), Aisling O’Riordan (175th and 53rd in 29:35) and Mari Hansen (210th and 78th in 31:07). Jill Nason placed 31st and 4th in 23:52 alongside 193 other participants in Tramore, whilst Felipe De Sousa also placed 4th in the 624-strong field in St. Anne’s. Felipe ran 18:18, and he was followed by Peter O’Toole (5th in 18:29), then Grainne Regan (381st and 113th in 29:55), Cian Coughlan (394th in 30:13) and Áine Crotty, who, like Grainne, is pregnant (417th and 129th in 30:46). We had at least 8 runners in Shanganagh, led home in the field of 300 by Aoife Quigley (23rd and 4th in 20:54). Aoife was followed by Emily Glen (25th and 5th in 21:29) and then a little further back by Ailish Hassett (78th and 15th in 25:05). Next came Lisa Shine (167th and 51st in 28:43), just ahead of Olwyn Dunne (168th and 52nd in 28:44) and Emer Kenny (169th and 53rd in the same time), and then came Orlaith de Burca (195th and 69th in 29:39), followed by Máirín Shine (203rd and 75th in 30:11). Colm Foley joined 254 other runners in Griffeen Park where he placed 46th in 23:54, whilst Mairead Cashman joined 711 other participants in Marlay Park where she placed 409th and 142nd in 30:13. Karl Walsh headed to Sligo where, alongside 159 other runners, he placed 6th in 20:47, whilst Darina Scully ran once again in River Valley Park, where, in a field of 129, she ran 31:08 for 71st and 19th spots. Lorraine McMahon ran once again in Youghal in Pobalscoil Na Tríonóide, where, in a field of 65, she placed 30th and 13th in 28:37, whilst Aoife Kelly joined a field of 208 in Poppintree where she placed 54th and 10th in 26:00. Fanny Trébouet took advantage of a visit to Edinburgh to run in the Portobello parkrun where, in a field of 377, she placed 192nd and 56th in 28::34, whilst our exiles in the UK were also evident. Richard Morrissey placed 4th in Brockwell, Herne Hill in a time of 17:57 and in a field of 478, whilst Thom Martini placed 109th in a field of 387 in Osterley and in a time of 26:13. Finally Rob Glascott ran once again in Battersea Park. In a field of 1219 participants, Rob ran 21:27 for 248th spot. John Treacy Dungarvan 10-miler (2841) Overall place Name Cat.
