In terms of racing, this week was a lot calmer than last, with few events on offer. However, Crusaders did participate in several of those that were available and produced some decent results in races short and long, far and wide. We start with cross-country. On Sunday afternoon, on a new course behind Citywest Hotel on the golf course there, we fielded a 7-strong men’s team in the Dublin Senior Championships. Conducted on an undulating 1500m course, the 7.5k race involved 5 loops with a quality field of 61. Although, we came home with no medals, the men produced excellent times to place 5th team overall. Colm Parnell was our first clubmate across the line, placing 8th in 24:12, just over 30 seconds behind race winner Rathfarnham’s David Scanlon (23:39) who often can be seen training on Irishtown’s track before our sessions. Colm was followed by Barry McCarthy (19th in 25:20) and then by John Mulvihill (40th in 27:17). Men’s captain, Joe McDermott was a little further back (49th in 28:16) with Jan Manschot (53rd in 29:01) and Raphael Crueyze (55th in 29:18) just behind. It was a baptism of fire for Mikel Cristosomo, running his first ever XC (61st in 32:10), but a great learning experience. Over the weekend, Noel Carr tested his legs after the marathon with a run in the Liberties RC 5k. In a field of 578, Noel placed 247th in 29:25, whilst Felipe De Sousa took on the Sallins 10k. In a field of 50, Felipe placed 9th in 41:27. Then, further west, Diarmuid Fahey joined 167 other participants in the Corofin 10-miler, completing the distance in 78:00 for 47th place. Members may be interested to note that Catherine Thornton, the Galway athlete who frequently trains with the club, decided to test her racing fitness for the upcoming 5-Nations XC competition in Belfast, running in the 8k in Corofin, where she placed 8th and 2nd female finisher, in a field of 268, in a time of 28:48. The first Sunday in November traditionally is the day on which the New York City Marathon is staged. This year’s race involved several Crusaders, most of whom are North American exiles. In perfect, cool and crisp conditions, with little wind, David Willis, who now resides in Charlotte, North Carolina, crossed the line in 2:44:55. David was followed by Toronto exile, Ian Kinsella, who continues to inspire us all. Only just over a year since open heart surgery, Ian ran even splits to record a time of 3:00:42. He was followed closely by Damien O’Brien, now based in New York, who ran 3:01:48 and then by Olwyn Dunne who travelled over to run the marathon a week after having paced the 4-hour runners in the Dublin Marathon last week. Olwyn recorded an excellent time of 3:50:29. The last Crusader home was Brooklyn exile Niamh McKenna who came home in 4:10:00. Well done to all on what is a challenging course, particularly over the multiple bridges throughout the 5 boroughs and then the hills in the final few kilometres in Central Park. We had at least four other athletes involved in international competition over the weekend. Cliodhna O’Reilly travelled to Nice, where she took part in the 20k race from the Promenade des Anglais all the way along the coast through Villeneuve-Loubet and its iconic Baie des Anges to Antibes. Cliodhna completed the challenge, held in mild, sunny and calm conditions, in 1:55:17. Als, on Sunday, one of our Spanish exiles, Esther Requena Ferri, took part in a team XC relay in Almodóvar del Rio, where her female team of 5 placed 3rd overall with Esther running her 7.5k leg in 30:27. Finally, Fearghal O’Hare and Aaron Cashman took part in the Husky 10 in NSW in Australia. On a route along the coast from Huskisson to Vincentia and back, Fearghal placed 2nd in a field of 972 in the 10k in 32:11, with Aaron placing 10th in 38:30. There was a timing issue where Fearghal was misdirected prematurely along the finishing chute, and his official result is indicated as a DNF, but hopefully, his feat was ultimately recognised! Not surprisingly, numbers participating in parkruns on Saturday morning were significantly up on last week’s, with those returning marathoners keen to shake off their efforts. We had at least 50 club members participate in Poolbeg, but the first finisher spoils belong elsewhere this weekend. Lorraine Healy ran in Corkagh Park alongside 237 other runners, placing 22nd overall and first female finisher in 22:06, whilst Laura O’Malley distinguished herself with placing 6th and 1st in the 48-strong field in Tolka Valley Park. Laura ran 23:41 and was followed by Phelim Murray (21st in 27:14) and Sarah Lyons, tailwalking. We also recorded several podium finishes too. Mary Donnelly placed 25th and 2nd in Bushy Park in a time of 22:49, and she was followed in the field of 202 by Kev Moore (26th in 22:54) and Kabir Sala (155th in 31:46). Then, in the University of Galway, Henry Griffin placed 2nd in a field of 114 and in a time of 18:14, whilst Aoife Quigley ran once again in Cork’s Tramore Valley, where she placed 9th and 2nd in 19:29. The field there measured 298 and Aoife was followed by Toby Benham (60th in 22:47). As mentioned above, we had at least 50 clubmates take part in the Poolbeg parkrun, in a field of 284, its second largest to date of its 291 runnings. Ross Neill placed 2nd in 17:06, closely followed by Stephen Hurley (4th in 17:46) and then by Dee Lawlor (7th in 18:12) and new member Luke Clarke (8th in 18:21). Continue to nurse a knee injury following a recent fall, Michael Wycherley still ran an excellent 18:40 for 9th place and he was followed by Derek Boland (11th in 18:53). Kevin Fitzgibbon was next (13th in 19:01), followed by Zlatko Kulic (20th in 20:22), James Cottle (22nd in 20:33), Piarais Neary (24th in 20:47), David Timoney (27th in 21:03), Garret Connolly (35th in 21:36) and John Lohan (39th in 21:56). Further back came Fiona Bane (51st and 2nd female finisher in 23:00) and Fiona was followed by Charles Cartledge (78th in 23:56), Dee Ni Chearbhaill (79th and 9th in 23:58), Russell Murphy (89th in 24:25), Anna Nilsson (95th and 16th in 24:30), Tadhg Molony (97th in 24:33), Josie Ward (102nd and 20th in 24:39), brand new member Thomas Donohoe (103rd in 24:45), Tara Murphy (124th and 29th in 26:21), Paul Campbell (125th in 26:22), Emily Glen (127th and 31st in 26:26), Sharon Woods (130th and 33rd in 26:33), Louise O’Riordan (133rd and 36th in 26:35), Franky Keane (143rd in 27:06), Orla Walsh (145th and 41st in 27:07), Aitor Arribas Velasco (147th in 27:12), David Pepper (148th in 27:13), Kenan Furlong (155th in 27:37), Alan Martin (161st in 27:48), Amy Forde (186th and 59th in 29:01), Ellen Walsh (203rd and 73rd in 29:50), Rebecca Kelly (206th and 76th in 29:52), Lorraine McMahon (207th and 77th in 29:52), Djinn Von Noorden (209th and 79th in 29:54), Kevin Kenny (210th in 29:57), Cynthia Perucca (233rd and 93rd in 31:46) and Anna Hernick (237th and 96th in 32:00). Tanja Narancic on her long run and Camilla Henry also finished, but their times and places were not recorded, and with sore muscles, Jade Murphy decided to call it a day early on. Karl Walsh placed 14th in a time of 20:05 in the 168-strong field in Naas, whilst Emer Kenny placed 152nd and 38th in 26:43 in the field of 335 in Malahide. Maria Kennedy and Mairead Cashman joined 202 other runners in Kilkenny, where Maria placed 84th and 16th in 27:39 and Mairead took 143rd and 51st spots in 32:53, whilst, in Mullingar, Kevin Lambe crossed the line in 8th place in a field of 182. Kevin’s time was 21:52. Pushing a double buggy, Eoghan Corrigan joined 111 other participants in Brickfields, where he placed 15th in 22:43, whilst Cathal O’Hara tailwalked in the 214-strong field in Killarney. Gemma Cooper ran alongside 135 other runners in Tramore, Waterford, where she placed 128th and 46th in 37:27, whilst Kevin Flynn placed 104th in 38:23 in the 122-strong field in Porterstown. Further afield, our London-based exiles were also in action. Jeanie Watson ran in Pymmes Park in Edmonton North London, where she placed 58th and 8th in 25:12 in a field of 192 runners, whilst Richard Morrissey ran once again in Dulwich, where, in a field of 782, he placed 22nd in 17:28. Thom Martini ran in the Severn Bridge parkrun where, in a field of 340, he placed 71st in 23:51. In preparation for the Dublin Seniors, Mikel Crisostomo ran easily in St. Anne’s where, in a field 600-strong, he placed 317th in 29:53, whilst Darina Scully, on pacing duties, finished the 139-strong run in River Valley in 83rd and 25th places in a time of 31:58. Lisa and Máirín Shine joined 177 other participants, including Carina Davidson, in Cabinteely. Lisa placed 132nd and 48th in 32:55, followed by Máirín (133rd and 49th in 32:56) and Carina (135th and 50th in 33:14). Then, in Shanganagh, Orlaith de Burca placed 146th and 35th in 27:59 alongside 259 other runners, whilst Paul and Aoife Kelly joined 205 other participants in Poppintree, where Paul placed 22nd in 21:54 and Aoife ran 29:17 for 101st and 30th spots. Finally, Maureen McGinley ran alongside 71 other runners in Kirpendonske Plas in the Netherlands where she placed 49th and 6th in 28:09. Corofin 10-miler (168) Overall place Name Cat.
