Team efforts pay off in Dublin 10-mile championships

17/8/2025

The Frank Duffy 10-mile road race in the Phoenix Park, one of the races in the Irish Life Dublin marathon race series and incorporating the Dublin 10-mile road championships, is one the favourite events on the calendar and always well-attended by Crusaders as part of their build up to the marathons at the beginning of Autumn. This year was no exception, with at least 37 Crusaders taking part in the race. 10 miles is a sweet spot for many runners and in fact there were at least two on offer over the weekend, in which we enjoyed considerable success in both.

Conditions at the start of the Frank Duffy race on Saturday morning were perfect. A little breeze under an otherwise overcast sky and a coolish temperature greeted runners for the 9 o’clock start on Chesterfield Avenue. By the time runners were heading around the Acres about 7 miles in, however, the sun had burned through the clouds, and for the later arrivals across the finish line, it would have been reasonably warm. The course, by now, is well known, taking in most of the western side of the park with its hilly challenges along the Military Road and up past the Wellington Monument and the race had its usual healthy turnout of over 3,600 runners.

It should not be forgotten that the race is important for club runners in search of medals in the Dublin Championships. Not everyone from the club indicated their affiliation, which may have prevented a few from being able to claim. Those that did, however, were likely rewarded, particularly where we were able to make up a team, especially among the female contingent from the club.

Brendan Murphy was first across the line, behind race winner Pierre Murchan who ran a super 49:01 on a challenging course. Running in no-man’s land for much of the race, Brendan placed 20th in 56:39 and he was followed in 57th place by Dee Lawlor (57th in 59:52). Further back came Paul McNamara (112th in 62:46), followed by James Sherry who had a strong run for 148th place with a time of 64:04.

John O’Donnell was next (243rd in 67:36), followed by David Carter (260th in 67:53) and Isabella Gyori, our first female finisher (but non-scorer) in 306th place overall and 19th female finisher in 68:43, paced for a while by Mikel Crisostomo. Adrian Groarke was next (308th in 68:35), followed by our first female scorer, Ciara Lynch (311th and 20th in 68:54). Ciara  led our senior women’s team to the silver medal. The other scorers were Tara Gavin (451st and 40th in 71:35), Louise Dobbyn (461st and 42nd in 72:03) and Cría Dowling (499th and 50th in 72:02). Louise also picked up the F35 bronze medal and Tara  picked up the F45 bronze medal too.

After Ciara came Karl Walsh (340th in 69:26), followed by Garret Connolly (350th in 69:39) and Phelim Murray (400th in 70:50), and, then, behind Cría, came David O’Donnell (580th in 74:07), and Orla O’Flynn (657th, 88th and silver medal winner in the F55 category) who led the women’s O/50 team to a silver medal. The other scorers were Sharon Woods (872nd and 138th in 78:48) and Olwyn Dunne (2071st and 576th in 89:40) who paced the 90 minutes runners.

In between Orla and Sharon came Isabelle Cairns (730th and 107th in 75:32), followed by GianPiero Allerta (800th in 77:34) and then after Sharon came Kabir Sala (891st in 78:06), Luz Estevan (924th and 152nd in 78:35), Tony Hackett (959th in 79:34), Orla O’Neill (1266th in 84:01), Patrick Needham (1371st in 85:52), Kevin Kenny (1594th in 88:32), Robbie Moore (1598th in 89:08), Martin Joyce (1632nd and possible silver medal winner (TBC) in the M70 category in 89:48), Paula Bradshaw (1734th and 422nd in 84:19), MinJung Shin ("MJ") (1955th and 520th in 95:15), Chris Bannon (1966th in 88:07) alongside David Pepper (1967th in 88:12), Alan Martin (2416th in 95:33), Mairead Cashman (2755th and 979th in 99:33), Joe Dunne, pacing the 100 minutes runners (2785th in 99:51) and Michelle English (2845th in 99:50).

Sunday morning saw participation by club members in two more races. One of them took place in Kilcock in Co. Kildare and was again organised by St. Coca’s AC, the 10 from 10, 10-miler. It enjoyed a field of 451 who, despite the heat of Sunday morning, were able to benefit from considerable shade throughout the race, although the gravel on the towpath on the Royal Canal did create a few challenges.  We had at least 6 Crusaders in the field, led home by Ger Forde in 12th spot in a time of 56:49. Ger was followed on the largely flat course by Ciarain Kelly (29th in 59:18) and then by Kathryn Gibbons (121st and 8th in 67:59), Sean Murphy  (likely 147th in or around 69:51, although his chip seems not have been working properly), Gill Earley (155th and 16th in 71:18) and Dee Ni Chearbhaill (214th and 33rd in 78:24).

Aoife Quigley and Miriam Logan headed to Athy for the half marathon there, distinguishing themselves. In a field of 309 finishers, Aoife won the women’s race, placing 17th overall, in a time of 88:47, followed by Miriam who placed 61st and 8th in 1:43:25.

Further afield, Sebastian Hansen participated in the Richmond Park Half marathon on the outskirts of London, in which he placed 2nd in a time of 79:27, and one of our UK exiles, Toby Benham, ran in the Yorkshire Peaks marathon, which he completed in 9 hours and 16 minutes.

In the Wicklow mountains last Wednesday, Clare Sullivan and gavan Doherty joined a field of 126, participating in a fund raiser for the Mountain Rescue Team. In an 8k race south of Glendalough involving a climb of 300m, Clare won the women’s race in a time of 40:47, placing 13th overall, followed by Gavan (74th in 55:45).

Clare went on to compete on Saturday morning in the Run the (Derrybawn) Ridge 10k, in which she also won the women’s race. In a field of 165, Clare placed 19th overall in a time of 48:08. Meanwhile, Áine Kenny took part in the 30k race in the same festival, placing 23rd and 4th in a field of 83 and in a time of 3:01:41.

We had at least three first finishers in Saturday morning’s parkruns.

In a field of 228, Kenan Furlong led home a contingent of at least 24 Crusaders in Poolbeg. Kenan’s time was 17:26. He was followed by Jan Manschot (2nd in 18:40), Ross Neill (4th in 18:44), Joe Murphy (5th in 19:03) and Kev Moore (4th in 20:08).

Further back came Jade Murphy (22nd and 4th in 21:57) and she was followed by Mary Donnelly (23rd and 5th in 22:03) and then by Claire Reidy (27th and 6th in 22:18), Ryan Preston (30th in 22:36), Saketh Ravuluri (41st in 23:07), Charles Cartledge (46th in 23:31), Josie Ward (58t and 11th in 24:31) and John Lohan (63rd in 25:00).

Further down the field came Juliane Frydenlund (79th and 17th in 26:32) and she was followed by Djinn Von Noorden (112th and 31st in 27:55) alongside Tara Murphy (113th and 32nd in the same time), Aisling O’Riordan (115th and 33rd in 28:12), Franky Keane (117th in 28:25) alongside Louise O’Riordan (118th and 35th in the same time), just ahead of Tanja Narancic (119th and 36th in 28:29) who ran alongside Emily Glen (120th and 37th in the same time), Maureen McGinley (162nd and 61st in 31:04), Cynthia Perucca (183rd and 74th in 32:41) and Niamh Trihy (204th and 89th in 37:48).

Ciara Regan was also a first finisher. In the Tubbercurry Trail parkrun she placed 3rd and 1st in the 46-strong field and in a time of 21:55, whilst, in Clonbur Woods, Yvonne Macauley placed 2nd and 1st in 20:23 in a field of 63. Her partner Alan Sheehy also ran there, but his time and place were not recorded.

Donatas Jocius joined a field of 90 in Brickfields where he placed 3rd in 18:42, whilst Joanne Carey and Darina ran in Avondale Forest alongside 114 other runners. Joanne placed 14th and 2nd in 23:24, with Darina a little further back in 27th and 7th in 25:46. Aoife McCarthy placed 17th and 5th in Vicarstown with its field of 141, whilst, in Tolka Valley Park, with its field of 53, we had 4 runners. Miriam Logan took 15th and 6th spots in 24:58 accompanied by Rebecca Fleming in the same time (16th and 7th), followed by Fiona Bane (21st and 9th in 25;24), with Sarah Lyons (28th and 11th in 27:11 and Emer Kenny (29th and 12th) both being awarded the same time.

Maria Kennedy ran once again in Kilkenny, where, alongside 171 other participants, she ran 28:59 for 81st and 19th spots, whilst, in the Bundoran Promenade parkrun, Fanny Trébouet placed 36th and 17th in 29:53. The field there measured 85. Meanwhile, Lisa Shine joined 39 other runners in Castlehaven where she placed 19th and 7th in 32:50, whilst other members of her family ran in Cabinteely. In a field of 178, Fiona Shine placed 105th and 31st in 31:17, followed by Máirín Shine (110th and 34th in 31:33).

We had 3 runners in Marlay Park with its field of 476. Ronan Moynihan ran 19:59 for 19th spot, followed by Barry O’Neill (158th in 26:24) and Carina Davidson (285th and 77th in 30:06), whilst, in Shanganagh, Orlaith de Burca was our sole participant, placing 126th and 30th in the field of 233, in a time of 28:40.

Finally, abroad, Paul and Aoife Kelly ran once again in Germany, where, in the WestPark in Sendling, Paul placed 28th in 23:36 and Aoife tailwalked in the field of 123. Our London exile Thom Martini ran in Faelledparken in Copenhagen with its field of 146, placing 20th in 21:52, and another London exile, Jeanie Watson ran in Hackney Marshes where she placed 101st and 7th in a field of 423 and in a time of 22:41.

It should also be noted that Crusader Derek Boland was a member of the winning crew in the All-Ireland coastal rowing championships this weekend. Congrats to him as he returns now to running again!

As usual, if any results have been missed or are incorrect please let us know! Thanks.
