L-R: Kabir Sala, Alan Martin, Michelle English, Luz Estevan, Laura O'Malley, Bo Chicoine We’re now very much back to road racing and, among some other decent races, there were a couple of good 10-milers run this weekend. The first, on Saturday morning, was the Dublin 10-mile road championships, held as usual in the Phoenix Park and incorporated into the Frank Duffy 10-miler, one of the races in the Dublin marathon race series. In mild conditions on a familiar hilly course within the western side of the park, the field measured 3680 finishers, among whom there were at least 37 Crusaders, some declaring for the club in the championships. The results are all set out below, but there are a few noteworthy comments. Our first runner home was Dee Lawlor (63rd in 59:43) followed by Abdé Boumaza (68th in 59:27). Unfortunately, neither appeared to have been declared for the Championships, so that our first scorer was Killian Lynskey (125th in 62:32). Likewise, Doireann Hughes placed 157th overall and 11th female finisher in 63:51, but unfortunately again for some reason was not declared. An appeal has been launched, since, with Doireann’s result the team of Isabella Gyori (297th and 23rd in 67:21), Ciara Lynch (749th and 32nd in a PB time of 68:36) and Luz Estevan (749th and 102nd in 74:32) and her would have likely won Senior team gold. We did get a couple of medals at least among individuals. Orla O’Flynn won gold in the F55 category, placing 818th and 117th in 76:12, whilst Ray Walsh won silver in the M60 category (339th in 68:35) and Olwyn Dunne, even though acting as a pacer, went on to win silver in the F60 category (1990th and 519th in 89:48). Juliane Frydenlund was also one of those with a PB (1687th and 386th in 86:03) along with Alan Martin (1845th in 87:52). There were likely more, despite the challenges of the event. Nevertheless, several of our runners were treating the race as a training run in their preparations for the marathon and added extra miles to their day with the race. In a quality field, it was good to see so many excellent times from our runners, particularly under 80 minutes. For example, Denis Holohan placed 180th in 6428, followed by Simon Kenny (255th in 66:41), Eddie Nugent (342nd in 68:23), Eamonn Egan (394th in 67:44), Adrian Groarke (581st in 71:37), David O'Donnell (607th in 72:29), Dee Ni Chearbhaill (906th and 141st in 76:31), Kabir Sala (934th in 77:30), Lisa Branigan (989th and 168th in 78:10) and Chris Bannon 79:03). Emily Glen, on her long run was only just outside 80 minutes (80:16) and she was likely accompanied by Paul Campbell whose place and time were not recorded (likely around 76 minutes), as also was the case for Ciara Regan (around 73 minutes). The other 10-miler was in Co. Kildare in Kilcock, organised by St. Coca’s AC on Sunday morning. On a relatively flat course involving running along the Royal Canal Greenway for a spell, we had at least 5 clubmates take part in a field of 428. Ciarain Kelly placed 25th in 57:40, and he was followed by Gill Earley (132nd and 11th in 68:52), Aoife Quigley (138th and 13th in 69:11), Bex Fleming (190th and 24th in 75:46) and Richard Kavanagh (257th and 2nd M70 in 82:59). On the same day, Emma Noonan was likely our sole representative in the Cork City 10k. In warmish conditions on a course with a significant hill around the halfway point, Emma placed 61st and 6th in a field of more than 1000 runners and in an excellent time of 38:33. The previous day, Cillian Traynor ran in the Rathkenny 5k held in Co. Meath. Cillian placed 5th in 18:36 alongside 521 other participants. Also, on Saturday, Áine Kenny tackled the annual running of the Run the Ridge 20k (one of a series of trail races of different lengths on the day) down in Co. Wicklow. In a field of 73, she placed 16th and 3rd in 1:57:52. Earlier in the week, as usual on a Wednesday at this time, we had at least 9 Crusaders take part in the Liberties Fun Run. It is often described as a 4-miler (6.44k), but its measurements are not always reliable and this year measured 6.6k and had a field of 924. TJ Bourke was our first runner across the line in 10th place and 1st M50 in 24:10. TJ was followed by Joe Walsh (14th and 2nd M50 in 24:49). Peter Beddy was next (48th in 27:43) enjoying the success of his older daughter Cate who runs for Templeogue (40th and 3rd in 26:41) and also of her younger sibling Alice who is in the JuCru (59th and 7th in 28:36) just ahead of one of her clubmates Abigail O’Shaughnessy (60th and 8th in 28:37). Cate was 1st in her JF category, with Alice 2nd and Abigail 3rd. Ronan Walsh paced Claire Reidy to a time of 27:57 and 27:59 for 51st and 52nd places respectively (Claire being 4th female finisher), with John Cunnane (75th in 29:02) and Ellen Walsh further back (128th and 20th in 31:40). Up in the Wicklow Mountains on Wednesday evening, Gavan Doherty joined 91 other runners in support of the Mountain Rescue Service in a race of around 8k, involving a climb of 300m. The race was held on a short route around Paddock Hill near Laragh. Gavan placed 42nd in a time of 50:50. There are fewer parkrun results on which to report this week. We had a slightly smaller number running in Poolbeg, led home by Ross Neill (4th in 18:35). In the field of 246, Ronan Walsh was next (22nd in 21:19), followed by Stephen Ryan (32nd in 21:44), Zlatko Kulic (37th in 21:58), Luke Haran just behind (38th in 22:06), Claire Reidy (55th and 5th in 23:46), Franky Keane (78th in 26:11), Diarmuid Finan (81st in 26:12), Josie Ward (116th and 31st in 28:09), Ellen Walsh (120th and 33rd in 28:19), Anousheh Alamir (145th and 47th in 29:32), Siobhan Russell (149th and 51st in 29:42), Maureen McGinley (164th and 61st in 31:11), Edwina Hogan (180th and 69th in 32:33), Cynthia Perucca (182nd and 70th in 32:44) and Una McCullagh, tailwalking. Kev Moore led the field of 215 home in Bushy Park in a time of 19:51 and he was followed by Mary Donnelly (25th and 3rd in 22:43) and by Mairead Cashman (171st and 49th in 34:03). Jamie Renehan and Michael O’Shea ran in Fairview, where, in a field of 167, Jamie placed 6th in 20:23 and Michael placed 8th in 21:29, whilst, in Oldbridge, and its field of 99, Aoife McCarthy took 39th and 4th spots in 26:06, followed by Carina Davidson (55th and 7th in 28:59). Mustaf Ahmed was our sole runner in St. Anne’s, alongside 455 other runners, placing 39th in 21:26, whilst Kevin Lambe placed 6th in 20:37 in Mullingar with its field of 169. John Lohan ran once again in Athlone RSC, with a field of 167, where he placed 7th in 21:19, whilst, in Marlay Park, Paul Flynn took 6th spot in 18:22, followed by Myles Nolan (40th in 21:50) and Imogen Guinness (253rd and 73rd in 28:52). The field there measured 457. We had 4 runners among the 277 who took on Shanganagh. Niall O’Connell placed 12th in 20:19, followed by Fiona Shine (133rd and 34th in 28:16) alongside Lisa Shine (134th and 35th in 28:17) and Máirín Shine (168th and 53rd in 30:27), whilst Lorraine McMahon joined 168 other participants on the Midleton Greenway, placing 97th and 30th in 29:54. Paul F. Kelly ran once again in the 172-strong field in Poppintree, where he placed 52nd in 25:53, whilst Martina White ran in the Edgbaston Reservoir parkrun in Birmingham, where in a field of 703 she placed 360th and 77th in 27:54. Finally, our exile in Glasgow, ran once again in Pollok, where in a field of 417 he placed 42nd in 23:23. Liberties 4-miler (924) Overall place Name Cat.
