We had some significant participation in the latest Graded Meet on Saturday, organised by Dublin Athletics in DSD’s stadium.
The event, the 5th of the season, had several disciplines on offer. In heat 1 of the women’s 200m grade B event, Karen Hughes placed 3rd in 27.63, whilst, in heat 2 of the D grade races, Marion Gilman crossed the line in 1st place in 27.30, with Meabh Murphy taking 3rd place in 29.01 in the 3rd heat of the same grade. In the first heat of the men’s 200m grade A races, Luc Culliton placed 5th in 22.87, just behind Leo Gormley (4th in 22.78) who now runs for UCD. Hugo Kirkham won heat 1 of the 200m grade D race in a time of 24.10, whilst, in heat 2, Robert Cervi took 2nd spot in 25.19, followed by Michael Burke (4th in 25.86). In the middle-distance races, Alex Ainsworth placed 2nd in grade B of the 800m in 2:03.32, whilst Cillian Traynor took 4th spot in the 2nd heat of the D grade event in 2:17.59. Then, we had several runners take on the 3,000m events. In heat 1 of the women’s grade B race, Kathryn Gibbons placed 2nd in 10:48.78, whilst in heat 1 of the men’s A grade race, runners ran 370m before being called back as the clock had failed to start. The race was restarted 15 minutes later, with Kevin Fitzgibbon achieving a PB time of 9:16.19 for 3rd place, followed by Conor Kilkenny who also recorded a PB time of 9:23.24 for 7th and John Mulvihill (10th in 9:34.28). Unfortunately, Michael Wycherley was unable to finish the race. Then, in the 2nd heat of the same grade, Colm Parnell placed 2nd in 8:53.61, followed by Adam Shier (4th in 8:56.42). Once again, Sean Brickell took on the discus, placing 7th with the last of his 6 throws, recording a distance of 34.09m. On the trails and roads this week, on Tuesday the BHAA held the traditional 5k trail run near the cricket pitches, just off Chesterfield Ave in the Phoenix Park. In a field of 106, Joe Walsh placed 7th and 1st M50 in 19:35, and he was followed by Karl Walsh (12th and 2nd M45 in 20:36), Chris Bannon (60th in 24:42) and Robbie Moore (67th in 25:18). Around the Acres in the Phoenix Park on Friday night, DFR held the annual Dublin Pride 5k run. We had at least 3 Crusaders take part alongside 1446 other runners. They were led home by Caroline Crowley (18th overall and 2nd female finisher in a time of 18:53). Caroline was followed across the line by Dee Ni Chearbhaill (175th and 17th in 22:34) and by Maria Kennedy, up from Kilkenny, who placed 275th and 30th in 23:41. On Saturday we had two runners who joined the field of 350 for the Half on the Head Half marathon down in Co. Kerry. Like Caroline, Emma Rowe distinguished herself by placing 2nd in the women’s race (21st overall) in a time of 94:40. Emma was followed by Aoibhinn Gilmartin (123rd and 23rd in 1:53:35). Then, on Sunday morning, capping a glorious weekend of sunshine racing, we had at least 3 Crusaders take part in the Castleknock 5k. In a field of 1907, Oisin Browne placed 87th in 19:22, just ahead of Killian Lynskey (101st in 19:34) and then further back came Paul F. Kelly (247th in 22:12). Further afield, one of our French exiles, Raphael Crueyze, ran in the hilly 5k de Lathus-Saint-Rémy north of Limoges, where he placed 6th in 20:18. IMRA organised at least two races last week with Crusaders participation. One, the ascent and descent of Mweelrea in Co. Mayo over the weekend, enjoyed the participation of Áine Kenny who completed the distance of nearly 11k in 93:17, placing 38th and 4th in the field of 70. Áine also possibly won the F45 age cat. as second place in the overall women's race went to someone in the same age category. On Wednesday, we had a couple of runners in Co. Wicklow on Keadeen. In a field of 93 and on a course measuring about 10k with a climb of about 385m, Jeffrey Marvel placed 17th in 61:41, followed by Daniel O’Mahony (25th in 64:25). We had nearly 30 of our clubmates take part in the Poolbeg parkrun on Saturday morning, on a day when numbers were generally much higher than the previous week everywhere, reflecting the improved weather conditions.
