There were two locations on Saturday for our athletes to try out their track and field skills. Several made the journey up to Belfast to run on the Mary Peters track in a British Milers Club event. Kevin Woods placed 1st in the men’s 800m C graded race, where he recorded a super time of 1:52.71. Then, in the G grade of the same distance, Henry Griffin ran 2:07.26 for 3rd place. In the women’s 800m B event, Charlotte Myers took 5th place in a time of 2:11.48, whilst Annie Hughes ran in the 1500m B race, where she recorded a time of 5:00.25 in placing 11th. Finally, there, we had two runners in the mile. In the men’s D grade Colm Parnell placed 9th in 4:23.07, whilst, in the E grade race, Alex Ainsworth ran 4:32.72, also for 9th place in his event. Further south, in DSD’s facility in Tibradden, we had at least 9 participants in the 5th round of the Dublin Athletics Graded meets. In the women’s 800m C event, Rachael Yorke placed 3rd in 2:29.73, followed by Amy McGuinness (5th in 2:30.48) and Aoife Quigley (7th in 2:33.42). In the men’s D event of the same distance, Paul E. Kelly placed 8th in a time of 3:15.79. Victor Michalak took 4th spot in the men’s 200m grade in a time of 25.95. Then, we had 3 runners take part in two of the men’s 3000m races. Ciarain Kelly ran in the A grade event where he placed 17th in 9:39.72, whilst Enda Clarke and Joe McDermott ran in the B grade race. The former placed 6th in 9:36.08 and the latter took 18th spot in 10:08.54. Finally, Jonathan Bell took part in the 2kg discus competition where he placed 3rd with his 5th throw of 34.83m. Last Tuesday, we had at least 5 runners in the BHAA-organised OPW 5k trail run, alongside the western side of Chesterfield Avenue and the cricket pitches in the Phoenix Park. Our contingent was led home by Karl Walsh in 13th place in a time of 19:54. In the 139-strong overall field, Karl was followed by Neil Brown (48th and 4th M55 in 22:22) and by David O’Donnell (54th and 5th M55 in 22:53). Further back came Kate Murray (68th overall, 16th female finisher and 3rd F50 in a time of 23:56) and Tony Hackett (124th in 29:51). Members may be interested to know that Sean Murphy, who trains with us, placed 20th in 20:13. Over the weekend, there were a couple of races of interest to members. In the 10th running of the Castleknock 5k on Sunday morning, the field of 1,660 runners included 4 Crusaders. Brian Regan placed 14th in 16:59, and he was followed by Carolyn O’Reilly who finished in 79th spot overall, 6th female across the line (on guntime) in 19:44 and by fiancé Oisin Browne (86th in 19:51). Later, across the line came Gerard White who looks to have walked the course in 44:07 for 1,519th spot. On the same day, Felipe De Sousa joined 73 other runners in the Kildare-based Dick Whelan Memorial 10k where he placed 41st in 51:50. Other miscellaneous results include Italo Giancaterina winning a race around country roads in San Demetico ne’ Vestini. Our Italian exile was taking part in the 2nd Trofeo Grotte di Stiffe 10k which he ran in 34:03. In Ironman Austria, Kim Hickey completed the event in 10:28, placing 2nd in her age category and impressively running the marathon element in 3:35. Closer to home, Louise O’Riordan took part in the Tri An Mhi triathlon, where she placed 2nd female finisher and also ran the 5k element in 22:49. There were two IMRA-organised events in the mountains this week. On Wednesday evening, 181 runners took to racing in Co. Wicklow to the top of Djouce and back. In an event with a distance of 11.45k and involving a climb of 642m, Warren Swords placed 19th and 3rd M45 in 66:06 and he was followed by Paul Flynn (29th in 68:08) and Gavan Doherty (147th in 96:30). On Saturday there was a 32k race in Tipperary involving at least one Crusader. The event was called the Galty Crossing and Donatas Jocius placed 5th in a time of 3:50:26 in a field of 71. We enjoyed an embarrassment of riches in terms of first finishers and podium places this week in Saturday’s parkruns. In Bushy Park, Luke Corcoran led the field of 299 home across the line in 19:21 and he was followed by Julie McGrath who placed 10th overall and first woman home in 20:35. It was great to see Daniel Lowe out running again as he placed 24th in a time of 21:57. Dee Lawlor was first across the line in Cabinteely. In a field of 188, Dee ran 19:07. Ciara Regan was also a first finisher in the Tubbercurry Trail parkrun where she finished in overall first place in a time of 20:21. The field there measured 75 in total. Another notable finish was recorded by Ronan Moynihan (3rd in a time of 21:26 in a field of 53 in Mallow Castle). We had a good turnout in Shanganagh, where, in a field of 264, Dave Carter led our contingent of 8 across the line in 6th spot. He was followed by Miriam Logan (20th and 3rd in 20:55), Olwyn Dunne (62nd and 9th in 24:06), Orlaith de Burca (134th and 37th in 28:07), Máirín Shine (154th and 46th in 29:15), Jill Nason (175th and 57th in 30:06) and Fiona and Lisa Shine, tailwalking. We had several of our clubmates running in UK-based parkruns on Saturday morning, half an hour ahead of those in Ireland. Phelim Murray and Sarah Lyons ran in the 204-strong field in Eastbourne. Sarah, who is pregnant, was running her 100th parkrun and placed 179th and 59th in 37:24, behind Phelim who placed 81st in 26:53. Michael Wycherley took 3rd place in a wet and windy parkrun on the Isle of wight, the Medina, with a field of 229. Michael’s time was 19:11. Then in Poole, again on the south coast, Toby Benham placed 184th in 24:25 alongside 691 other participants.
