We had so many Crusaders out competing this weekend, it is impossible to comment on all and the results below hopefully speak for themselves. There were two highlights of the weekend. The first was Adam McMullen’s new Crusader long jump record (indoors and outside) in a competition in Belfast where he jumped 7.97m. The jump was only 3cm off the Irish record and places him as the leading long jumper in the UK for 2018, 3rd in Europe and 6th in the World. The second highlight was the turnout of nearly 60 of us in the 34th running of the Raheny 5 miler, arguably one of the best 5 mile races in the country. This year more than 4,000 registered, with well over 3,500 finishers on the day. Conditions were dry and mild but a little blustery on a course in which the first mile had had to be altered from last year. Instead of a long drag along the Howth Road, we found ourselves on a short sharp hill going back towards the starting area, limiting the amount of time spent on the Howth Road. Despite misgivings before the start, with concern that the leading runners might potentially have had to work through a field yet to start, the arrangements worked out well and the course proved to be as fast as ever. The only time when the wind came into play was in the long run up the central alley in St. Anne’s Park where drafting was needed as we approached a turnaround to complete the last 2k. The Cru women ran well in a quality field, Adrienne Jordan leading the charge (196th overall, 17th woman, in 30:18) and 2nd F40. Kiera Roche was next in 199th overall (19th woman in 30:17), followed by Ilona McElroy (215th overall, 23rd woman, in 30:34). The three women were scorers on the senior team coming home in 3rd place (59 points) ahead of Sportsworld (64) and behind DSD (17) and Raheny (23). Catherine Thornton followed closely behind in a PB performance, knocking 25 seconds off her previous best with 30:41 (220th overall, 24th woman). Newcomer Alma Hanevy was next (329th overall, 34th woman, in 31:51) and Alma was followed by Niamh Aspell (469th overall, 55th woman, in 33:21). Top 100 places went also to Dee Ni Chearbhaill (484th overall, 57th woman, in 33:51), Rachael Yorke (492nd overall, 63rd woman, in 33:56), Katie McElroy (553rd overall, 77th woman, in a PB time of 34:31) just ahead of Emer Kenny (555th overall, 78th woman, also with a huge PB improvement of 34:31) and followed by Grainne Regan (588th overall, 83rd woman, in 34:54). The O/40 masters team placed 7th. Members will also be interested to know that Lorraine Healy, who trains with us, recorded her first ever 5 mile race, coming home in 442nd place overall, 50th female finisher, in 33:26. On the men’s side, we were all led home by recent Swedish arrival, Albin Ingmarsson (37th in 27:02). Albin was followed by Michael Wycherley with a super effort and a likely PB (48th in 27:36). Rob Cross was next (54th in 27:44), followed by newcomer, Kieran Little (59th in 27:46). Top 100th places were completed by Peter O’Toole (77th in 28:08), Bram D’Hoedt (78th in 28:12, and hopefully not suffering too much from the recurrence of an Achilles injury), and Frank Halligan, back from injury (90th in 28:21). Top 200 places went to Joe McDermott (104th in 28:30), Karl Walsh (146th in 29:19), who, like Dave Carter (173rd in 29:56) stormed through the field. In between came Daniel Lowe (152nd in 29:18) and the trio was followed by Michael Maughan (190th in 30:11). The O/40 masters team of Michael Wycherley, Rob Cross and Karl Walsh placed third, whilst our senior team took 5th. Among other notable performances were those of Joe Walsh (211th in 3:27), coming off injury, Eddie Nugent (226th in 30:44), James Cottle (244th in a PB time of 30:59 and, after reeling in his competition over the first 3 miles, 1st M60), Philip Hamilton who was next (305th in 31:35), followed by Brendan Glynn with a PB time of 32:38 (368th). There was also a PB for Neil Brown (556th in 34:32) and most likely for others too, it was that kind of a day! It was also good to see Philip Matthews back racing again after a long lay off. As usual we had fantastic support from the sidelines. Anyone who races knows what a difference it makes and is grateful for it. Since the beginning of the year several Crusaders have taken part in the indoor races on Thursday evenings in Abbotstown. On 11 January. 6 of our members took part in the 60m races on the evening. In race 1 Valentinos Goularas came home in 3rd (7.09), just ahead of Matt Behan (7:09). In race 2 Simon Everard placed 5th in 7.75 and in race 3 Alix Hughes took 4th spot in 8.21. Finally, John Caird won race 4 in 8.18, just ahead of John O’Loughlin in 2nd (8.30). Ronan Moynihan took on the 800m, winning race 4 in 2:24.48. Then in the 400m, race 2, Simon Everard won the race in 54.77, ahead of John O’Loughlin (4th in 58.90) and John Caird (5th in 60.78). In race 1 of the 200m, John O’Loughlin took 4th in 26.84, whilst Simon Everard came home in 2nd place in race 4 in a time of 24.86. Finally, Alix Hughes was the only competitor in the shot, putting it 9.68m. Last Thursday (25 January), we had a smaller turnout for the events. In race 4 of the 60m, Damien Murphy placed 4th in 8.50, whilst Mary Morgan also took 4th in race 2 of the 200m in 59.79. Finally, Denis Murphy placed 5th in the 2nd mile distance race in a time of 5:50.67. Leo Lundy remains on the pursuit of ultras. This weekend he ran along the banks of the river Stort on the borders of Essex and Hertfordshire. The race enjoyed good weather but conditions were mucky underfoot. Leo’s 29.5 miles was good enough for 4th place overall out of 121 finishers. There was quite a decent turnout for parkruns this weekend, spread across 14 events. The ever-steady Fiona Bane was a first finisher in Father Collins, placing 12th overall in a time of 23:57, the day before embarking on the Raheny 5 miler. Likewise Sarah Lyons is running well, and was a first finisher in Mullingar, taking 6th overall in 22:23. Another good result came from parkrun debutant James Murphy who placed 3rd in Poolbeg in a time of 18:32 as he works his way back to full fitness. He was joined by David Timoney (7th in 19:43), Zalan Kovacs (29th in 23:20), Brian Langton (46th in 24:59), Gillian Curran (58th overall, 13th female, in 25:30) and Mary Dolan (69th overall, 21st female, in 26:39). Likewise, Kate Murray placed 3rd (33rd overall) in Lough Key in a time of 23:53. Other good runs came from Ronan Moynihan (14th in 19:32) and Brian Scanlan (16th in 19:35) in Malahide, Donal Foley (10th in 22:12, in Porterstown), Colm Kernan(9th in 21:11) and Denis Murphy (10th in 21:31) in Killarney, Mike Stewart (16th in 21:44) in Shanganagh and Lisa Shine (107th overall, 12th woman, in 25:03) in Ballincollig. The course, a mixture of circuiting GAA pitches and rough parkland, was pretty much waterlogged and extremely muddy, particularly on the couple of small hills involved. Thankfully, there was little wind, but it was bitingly cold on the day in the rain and the conditions made it quite difficult to run properly. Unusually, the BHAA event came only 7 days after its first races of the year, which may have deterred a few runners, but we had a decent turnout of 14 participants all the same. We had 4 finishers in the 2 miles women’s race, led almost from gun to tape by Irene Gorman, in her second comeback race in the last month, running strongly from the start. Irene’s time of 12:40 was impressive in the conditions, as was that of Ilona McElroy who came home in 2nd place (12:50). Our next official finisher was Serena Moloney who took 11th place (13:53) in the field of 43 runners and Serena was followed home by Mairead Cashman (41st in 19:54), in what appears to have been her second event of the morning. The men’s (mixed) 5 mile race involved a field of 132 with victory, unsurprisingly, going to Sean Hehir in a time of 26:55. In the strength-sapping conditions, and on a swampy course totally cut up from the women’s race, it was great to see Michael Wycherley go from strength to strength and placing 11th in 29:53, just 25 seconds behind Laura Shaughnessy marking a comeback from a leg injury that had kept her out for a few months. John McAuley was next in 17th position (30:37), followed by, Michael Maughan (30th in 32:21). Tom Dunne, another BHAA regular, had a stormer of a race, placing 55th in 34:48 ahead of Brendan Glynn who ran well to take 57th spot (35:01). Brendan was followed by Karl Walsh (59th in 35:18), Pat Quill (63rd in 35:31), Robbie Moore (73rd in 36:26), Neil Brown (88th in 38:13) and coach Michael McGovern (104th in 39:28). A few events were missed off last week’s report. The first has already been reported by Bob Lyne on Facebook (indoor athletics at the Munster masters Championships): John Caird won silver (O40) last weekend in the 60m sprint with a time of 8.22. John O' Loughlin (O50) won gold in both the 400m (59.94) and the 200m (26.71) and also a silver in the 60m (8.19). The 200m and 400m for John were championship bests. Bob Lyne won gold in weight for distance with a PB of 6.21m and silver in high jump and shot put. The week before he won a silver in Munster racewalking 3k with a time of 18: 51. We also need to record the Art O’Neill Challenge that started in the dead of night on Friday/Saturday of last weekend from Dublin Castle, ending up in Glenmalure in Wicklow, commemorating the famous escape in 1592. In the 10th running of the event, in difficult wet and cold weather, some 80 runners finished the ultra-marathon mountain event out of a total of 145 finishers running, trekking or walking. There were perhaps as many as 50 who dropped out because of the tough conditions. The race was won by Andrew Tuckey in 5:29, but a Crusader appeared on the podium with Warren Swords taking 3rd place in a time of 5:49. Des O’Brien came home in 61st place (9:56), followed by David Timoney who took part in the hybrid element of the event (102nd in 13:20). Then, on Sunday, in altogether drier conditions, but on difficult terrain, we had at least 4 runners in an IMRA winter league race in Howth over 5.7km, starting from the Deerpark golf course at Howth Castle and climbing more than 250m. The race was won by Javier Hernando in 30:19, leading home 226 runners. Becky Quinn was the first Crusader home in 31st place overall and winning the women’s race in 34:46. Becky was followed by Laura Flannelly (67th overall, 6th woman) in 38:45 and by Tim O’Donnell (210th in 55:37). This weekend, the IMRA runners were out again on Saturday morning. In a race on Hellfire over 6.4km and a climb of 240m, the event, with 170 runners, was won by Conor O'Keeffe in 34:08. Our three Crusaders acquitted themselves well. Becky Quinn took 33rd place, 2nd woman finisher (1st F40), in 40:11 and Becky was followed by Laura Flannelly (45th overall, 3rd woman) in 41:49. Ali Onur Uyar also took part in the race, placing 60th in 43:01. There were a few parkruns on which to report. Members will be interested to learn that Kris Ryan continues to run in Coomera, placing 17th overall, 2nd female finisher, in 23:18 in a field nearly 150 strong. Newcomer and marathoner Kieran Little was a first finisher in Clarisford in Killaloe, Co. Clare. Kieran ran with 39 other runners, recording a time of 18:18. There were second place finishes in the women’s events for Fiona Bane in Waterstown and Sarah Lyons in Fairview. In a field of 72 Fiona ran 23:57 to place 11th overall, whilst Sarah ran in a field of 115, recording a time of 23:39 and placing 17th overall. Kate Murray also appeared on the podium by placing 25th overall, 3rd woman home, in a time of 23:41 in the 132-strong field in Donabate. A few events to note: This is the first time possibly that a Crusader has run in Castlewellan near Newcastle, Co. Down. Leo Lundy was that runner, placing 45th in a field of nearly 150, in a time of 24:57. Mairead Cashman ran in Bushy Dublin before the BHAA race, coming home in 102nd place overall (30th woman) in 29:37, in a field of nearly 130 runners. Matt Cranley returned from sickness to place 21st out of 407 runners in St. Anne’s. Matt’s time was 19:58 and he was followed by Lisa Shine (162nd overall, 27th woman, in 26:08) and Lorraine Fitzsimons (301st overall, 99th woman, in 31:07). Meanwhile, Gillian Curran was 5th female finisher (41st overall) in Poolbeg. Gillian’s time was 25:36 and she was preceded by Russell Murphy (24th in 23:17) and Colm Foley (34th in 24:16) and followed by Aisling O’Connor (50th overall, 9th woman, in 27:06) in a field of 104. Natasha Murray placed 120th overall, 36th woman, in Tymon among 137 runners, with a time of 40:43, whilst, in Marlay Park, Anthony O’Reilly took 20th place (20:08) and James Ryan, 49th spot (22:03) in the nearly 500-strong field. We enjoyed 20% of a relatively modest women’s field and nearly 15% of the men’s race. The BHAA’s gain was Leinster’s loss and we only had a few individual runners on Sunday afternoon in Dunboyne’s Cow Park for the intermediates and masters championships. By all accounts the races in Tymon went well (although one report had the women’s race taking a wrong turn at one point), in quite good, but chilly, conditions, not too much mud and the course isn’t really hilly, although it has two or three drags. The strong north-easterly winds of the morning didn’t affect the races too much either. We had 6 runners in the 2 miles women’s race in a field of 32. Niamh Corby maintained her great form by placing 3rd in 12:51 and was the first F40 home. Edel Haverty also ran well to place 8th in 13:31. Edel was followed by Serena Moloney who seems to have thrown off her recent leg injury, placing 10th in 13:41 and Serena was followed by the stalwart, Kate Murray, in 14th (14:16). Ciara Lehane took 16th place in 14:34, being followed by two newcomers to cross country racing, Miriam Logan (22nd in 15:53) and Emilie Fournier, whose bib appears, unfortunately, not to have registered a time. The “mixed” 4 miler was altogether a larger event with 158 runners, among them 20 Crusaders. The challenge it seems was to avoid being beaten by Maria McCambridge, one of only two female runners in the race, who came in 15th overall. N his return to racing, men’s captain Michael Kiely distinguished himself with 2nd place in 22:25 and Ciaran Diviney ran well to place 7th in 23:08 (and 1st M45). Ciaran was followed reasonably closely by Albin Ingmarsson in his 2nd cross country event (9th in 23:22) and surprisingly by John Mulvihill (11th in 23:28) in his first race back from a hernia operation. Michael O’Conor (14th in 23:42) managed to get past Maria at the last gasp as she was collateral damage when he was actually targeting Michael Wycherley (17th in 23:46), who is flying right now, despite his Achilles concerns. John McAuley was next (20th in 24:01), followed by Joe McDermott (26th in 24:35) and James Cahill (31st in 24:54). Karl Walsh took 37th spot in 25:16 and he was followed by Barry McGuire, in training for the Boston marathon in April (39th in 25:24). Michael Maughan was another runner to finish inside the top 50 (40th in 25:25) and he was followed by Colm Kernan (56th in 26:52), maintaining the form he showed in the Dublin masters the previous week. The remaining runners were Pat Quill (59th in 27:04), Brendan Glynn (65th in 27:35), Tomas Dunne (74th in 27:59), Tim O’Donnell (76th in 28:02) in his 2nd ever XC race, Denis Murphy (82nd in 28:27), Robbie Moore (92nd in 28:49) and Mike McGovern (113th in 30:23). The temperature continued to drop steadily throughout Sunday afternoon in the Cow Park in Dunboyne, but it didn’t seem to affect the runners who were on fire. The course was relatively benign (and drier) compared to previous years and, although it got churned up throughout the day, there were only a couple of tight turns which became progressively muddier and challenging with each race. The masters women went off first with Mairead Cashman and Mairin Shine representing the club in a field of 93 over 2 1,500m laps of a 3k race. As might be expected in a strong, quality field (with the winner, Dunleer's Karen Costello recording a time that would have won her silver in the women's intermediate race), they found the event challenging coming home as back markers, but they pushed hard throughout. Mairin may well have been the only F60 in the field but no medals were awarded it seems above F55. In the next event, the men’s masters’ 6k, we were represented by Jason Kehoe and David Long, both having run in Dublin the week before. This was a race involving a field of 158 and 4 laps. John Dunne, the previous week’s Dublin champion, duly did the double in Leinster. Jason ran well to place 20th (21:38) after a fast start over the first 2k and settling to have even kilometre splits thereafter. David Also ran well to come home in 131st place (26:22). The last event in which we had any participation was the women’s intermediates. Our women’s captain, Lisa Shine, turned out for us in a quality field of, however, only 39 runners, placing 35th (18:46) in what tunred out to be an extremely challenging experience for her. Well done to our plucky runners! General participation levels in the parkruns on Saturday were, with one or two exceptions, down on the previous week, possibly as New Year resolutions start to fall by the wayside! Still, we had 20 runners out. The size of each field in Ireland is indicated below. In Glasgow Aidan Hudner continues to take part in Victoria Park’s event, placing 69th out of a field of 429 in 22:02. Dave Carter took 3rd place in Cabinteely in a time of 20:36, whilst Kieran Little, who has just started to train with the club, was first finisher in Poolbeg (18:250 ahead of 6 Crusaders. Niamh Quinn was third woman finisher in the same event (35th overall, in 24:22) and Niamh was followed by Zalan Kovacs (43rd in 25:16), Mary Dolan (77th overall, 14th woman, in 28:25), Ciara McElligott (96th overall, 22nd woman, in 32:40), Don Anderton (102nd in 35:19) and Brian Langton (104th in 35:21). The ever-improving Maria Pertl ran 28:09 (52nd overall, 12th woman) in Poppintree, followed by partner Diarmuid Byrne who was mopping up the back markers (125th in 49:45). Donal Foley ran 22:25 to place 18th in Porterstown, whilst Fiona Bane also put in a good performance to record 23:45 (95th overall, 8th woman). Fiona was followed by Lorraine Fitzsimons (296th overall, 91st woman, in 31:44). James Ryan ran 22;14 to place 42nd in the substantial field in Marlay whilst Leo Lundy and Sarah Lyons came in not too far apart in Fairview, Leo placing 34th in 25:14 and Sarah, 36th overall, 4th woman, in 25:36. Finally, Lisa Shine and Mairead Cashman prepared themselves for Sunday’s XC in Lugh Key and bush Dublin, respectively. Lisa, alongside her sister Fiona, placed 138th overall (49th woman) in 33:36, with Fiona recording the same time (139th overall, 50th woman). Meanwhile, Mairead placed 154th overall (36th woman) in a time of 29:33. BHAA BOI XC (women’s 2 miles) Overall place Name Cat. On a weekend otherwise devoid of much racing locally, the highlight was without doubt our participation in the Dublin Masters XC Championships, where we fielded a team of 9 women and 21 men in the two races on offer. The support as usual was second to none and there seemed to be a Crusader everywhere on the course. We were spared the strong winds of the previous day, so what wind we experienced was rather benign and refreshing. Nevertheless, even in the sun we experienced the cold chill of January. Surprising, also, were the underfoot conditions. The bulk of the course was quite dry and hard, and some runners accordingly chose to go for it in runners. However, where there was mud (in two or three places), it became increasingly treacherous and deep as more laps were undertaken on it. Those of us who opted for spikes were grateful for the grip, in the final analysis. As is customary, the women’s race went off first with 158 runners, one of two record fields on the day. The distance was 3K, which involved a straight line start of about 100m through swampy conditions onto a loop which had to be covered twice. The loop was a mixture of open grassland and forest trail (involving a leap over a log on an extremely narrow part of the course) under a canopy of trees and totally flat. Adrienne Jordan and Niamh Boland were right up at the front from pretty much the start and by the end of the first lap were both running together in dominant form. Niamh was recovering from a bout of flu earlier in the week, which kept partner Karl Fahy out of the men’s race later, but still incredibly managed to hold onto second place (12:25 and first F35) coming across the line, 5 seconds behind Adrienne (12:20 and first F40) who reversed the finishing positions of Monday’s Tom Brennan 5K between the two women. Before the race Adrienne had been complaining that the course was too short and not enough of a test. By the end, she was beaming with a well–deserved gold medal! Niamh held on in the final sprint despite a determined charge from the athlete in 3rd place, as did Niamh Corby who ran a super race, tucking in behind a group of girls lying in the top 10 spots. Niamh came home in a creditable 6th position (12:36), and with Dee Ni Chearbhaill in 25th place (13:37), the top 4 Crusader women took home the team silver medal (34 points) behind Sportsworld (29) and ahead of Raheny (72). The remaining athletes all acquitted themselves well, headed by Kate Murray (66th in 14:43) and followed by Ciara Lehane (73rd in 14:58), Triona Quill (76th in 15:03), Olwyn Dunne (90th in 15:24) and Mairead Cashman (150th in 18:19). Having churned up the course nicely, the women then gave way to the 6k men’s race, which involved the same start, followed by 4 loops. Some of us made the mistake of starting out on the left hand side which took us close to some rugby posts. The course was far muddier taking this route than the other side, but thankfully it did not last long. The record field, however, of 280, did create some issues early on with runners fighting for position as the course significantly narrowed after 100m. The race was won for the second year in a row by Raheny’s John Dunne, but, again, Crusaders made their mark among the finishers. Ciaran Diviney, took 8th spot (2nd M45 in 21:40) with a time that almost matched what he ran last year, whilst several others of us were able to record faster times in the drier conditions. Jason Kehoe was next in a super 13th place (22:08), followed by Peter O’Toole also running brilliantly (17th in 23:15). Michael Wycherley, still suffering a bit from an ankle injury, excelled himself with 36th place (23:15) and between them, the first 4 home were able to take 5th place in the team event (out of a total of 30, including 11 M50, teams). Behind Michael came Karl Walsh (48th in 23:43), followed by James Cahill (52nd in 23:15), new to cross country running, along with Barry McGuire (66th in 24:11). Club president, Will Owens, was next (70th in 24:15), followed by Michael Maughan (86th in 24:48) and Eddie Nugent (97th in 25:01). They were followed by the first 4 runners of our 9-strong M50 team. First home was Colm Kernan who ran a belter of a race picking up places (at least 32) consistently through the event (109th in 25:15), followed by Dave Tilly, who dusted off a really old pair of Nike spikes for the occasion, running really well (125th in 25:42). The final two were James Cottle (133rd in 25:52), just pipping Pat Quill on the line (134th with the same time), having enjoyed a push-me-pull-you throughout the race. James was able to take the bronze medal in the M60 category, just two seconds and one place the second placed athlete, who James had been reeling in throughout the race from a 100m separation at the end of the first lap, but who just managed to hold on in the end. The Men’s M50 team managed to record the best result the club has achieved to date, in coming home in 4th place (out of 11) and even also taking 3 M35 team scalps in the process. The later runners were led home by Tim O’Donnell of the M35 team enjoying a baptism of fire (169th in 26:41) and Tim was followed by David Long (186th in 27:13) off the back of little preparation due to drawn out dental treatment, Denis Murphy (190th in 27:21), Neil Brown (207th in 27:43) and the remaining members of the M50 team, Robbie Moore (230th in 28:27), Joe Dunne (238th in 29:07) making a welcome return to racing, and by Russell Murphy (251st in 30:00). Congratulations to all. It was a most enjoyable race with great atmosphere and a quality field. The occasion was made even more special for us, as John Fitzsimons, our veteran about to have major surgery this week, was given the honour by Dublin Athletics of handing out the medals. We extend him all our love and wish him all the best in the weeks to come. Abroad, we had at least two runners in races. Brian Scanlan ran in the Disney marathon in Florida over the weekend coming home in a time of 3:21:03, finding the final few miles quite tough, but fun. Then in Spain, Pablo Sanchez took second place in the Tres Cantosroad and trail 5k near Madrid. Because there were so few races on offer this weekend there was a jam-packed participation of Crusaders in the parkruns. The fields for each one are listed below and some of them were much larger than usual. We actually start with those run in the Antipodes. Kris Ryan is maintaining her parkrun tradition, running in Coomera in Australia and in a field of 162 she placed 22nd overall, 3rd female, in 23:56, whilst in New Zealand, in the Western Springs parkrun in Auckland, Brian Carroll joined 115 other runners, placing 7th in 20:34. Some stand out results were recorded firstly by Dave Carter and Suzanne Martin who were both first finishers in Cabinteely for Crusaders. Dave ran 19:42 to place first overall, whilst Suzanne took 31st place overall, coming home in 23:53. They were joined by Anthony O’Reilly (7th in 20:44). Catherine Thornton followed home Dave’s doppelgänger from GCH in the equally challenging Knocknacarra, taking 3rd place overall and first female finisher in 20:04, capping an excellent period of racing. Ronan Moynihan placed 18th in Malahide in 19:54, whilst, in St Anne’s, Colm Kernan prepared for the XC on Sunday with a warm up 73rd place (22:24). Natasha Murray was also a sole runner for the club in Tymon, taking 129th place, 50th female, in 42:30, whilst Maria Pertl has started to bring her times down following recent pregnancy, running 30:25 in Poppintree to take 86th place overall (26th female). Neil Brown also prepared for the following day’s XC with a run of 27:30 (73rd place) in Shanganagh, and, similarly, Denis Murphy did the same thing in Fairview (15th in 24:12). Also running in Fairview were Phelim Murray (13th in 23:45), Sarah Lyons (18th overall, 3rd woman, in 24:49) and Leo Lundy (19th in 25:00). Porterstown saw Donal Foley in action (19th in 22:52), followed by Martina White (47th overall, 13th woman, in 27:11) after a long absence and by Kevin Flynn (54th in 27:48). We had the usual large turnout in Poolbeg. Our nine runners were led home by David Timoney (15th in 20:54), followed by Anthony Owens (17th in 21:00), Zalan Kovacs (43rd in 23:08), Gillian Curran (66th overall, 6th woman, in 25:400, Ali May Hannigan (77th overall, 11th woman, in 26:37), Iseult Ni Chuinneagain (110th overall, 25th woman, in 29:39), Mary Dolan (139th overall, 41st woman, in 35:45), Don Anderton just behind (140th in 35:460 and by Mairin Shine picking up the pieces (147th overall, 44th woman, in 40:44). Finally, there was a new parkrun inaugurated in Drimnagh on Saturday (Brickfields). Olwyn Dunne (62nd overall, 15th woman, in 29:59) nobly paced the 30 minutes runners, preparing herself for the Dublin masters. In the substantial field Olwyn was accompanied by Padraig Walsh (10th in 21:51) and by another athlete saving herself for the masters, Mairead Cashman (45th overall, 7th woman, in 27:34). We had participants in at least 4 events on St. Stephen’s Day with some excellent results. On that day, in Tipperary, Eddie Nugent took part in the 4 mile MSD race organised by Clonmel AC. In a field of more than 450 finishers, 50 runners went under 25 minutes, including Eddie in 48th place (24:57), with both race winners, Sean Tobin and Lizzie Lee, registering course records. Then, we had 3 runners in the Streets of Wicklow 5k. Our first runner home was Ollie McGrath (44th in 18:52 and 4th in his age category), followed by Philip Hamilton (53rd in 19:14) making a welcome return to racing and then by Brian O’Kelly who performed pacing duties (252nd in 27:00). The field measured over 400 participants. On the same day, Mairead Cashman and Kate Murray ran together in a 5k organised by Bride Rovers GAA club in Rathcormac in Cork, but results have not been published. Finally, in chilly conditions on the undulating course of the Fields of Athenry 10K we had 6 Crusaders take part. They were joined by nearly 1100 other runners. First home was Vinnie McGuinness who took 9th spot in a great time of 34:16 and Vinnie was followed by Catherine Thornton (76th overall, 6th woman finisher, in 39:15). Irene Gorman followed closely behind, with a surprising and welcome PB in her first race since suffering a foot injury that kept her out for a lot of 2017 (83rd overall, 7th woman, in 39:23). Irene was followed by Brendan Glynn, with yet another PB (134th in 41:13) and Amy Wright (162nd overall, 21st woman, in 42:12). The contingent was completed by Conor Fahy (197th in 43:02). Catherine went on the following day to run in a local 5K in Galway, placing 3rd overall and winning the women’s race. Closer to home, Leo Lundy joined Sean Murphy, the United Striders runner who trains with us, in the Bull Island 7k race, run on a mix of trail and sand. It was won by Sean, but Leo was just using it as a warm up for the following day’s Portumna marathon in which he placed 32nd in a field of 52 in a time of 5:14:27. On 27th December, we had a large turnout of Crusaders in the Howth Fat Turkey 10K, which involves almost a straight climb of nearly 150m over 5k followed by a similar sharp descent. Barry McGuire recorded a PB in taking 13th place (in a field exceeding 450) in a time of 39:02. Barry was followed by Matt Cranley (without the pushchair!) (27th in 42:09) and Colm Kernan (30th in 42:29 and 1st M50). Other runners were Denis Murphy (62nd in 44:51), Liam O’Brien (67th in 45:24), Olwyn Dunne (97th overall, 17th female finisher,1st F50, in 47:09), Aoife Quinn, in her first 10k since coming back from injury, (11th overall, 19th female, in 48:03), Russell Murphy (119th in 48:37), Darina Scully (153rd overall, 31st female, in 50:08) and Carina Davidson (177th overall, 37th female, in 51:35. Then, at the weekend, there were several races to record. Two, in particular, stand out. The first was the Togher 5K down in Cork. We only had one participant among the 575 finishers, but she excelled herself in her first race back from a long injury. Our runner was Anna Reddin who placed 23rd overall, 2nd place woman in a great time of 17:27. On the same day, there was an improved turnout compared to previous years for Clonliffe in their Christmas Cracker 5K, held on the roads around the Santry Demesne and starting and finishing in the Morton Stadium. In sunny but cold and breezy conditions, the 200 runners were led home by Valdas Dopolskas, in the first of two victories in successive days. We had 3 participants, led by Olly McGrath (36th in 19:15) and followed by Michael Maughan (38th in 19:45) on the back of some mountain running immediately beforehand and by Geraldine Clements, making a welcome return to racing following injury, in 113th place overall (41st female finisher) in a time of 24:58. Also on Sunday, Pablo Sanchez took part in a race in Madrid (the San Silvestre Vallecana 10K), finishing in a super time of 35:06. Additionally, Leo Lundy finished 2017 with an ultra-marathon in Kent, running 49.8km, also in windy conditions, in a time of 6:22:53. Finally, to round up our record of road races, on New Year's Day there was the Tom Brennan 5K organised by Liffey Valley AC at the northern end of the Phoenix Park (Furze Road, Ordnance Survey Road and Chesterfield Road circuited twice). In windy conditions (a strong head wind along the Furze Road), it was not a day for PBs. We had at least 14 Crusaders in the race which involved nearly 600 runners. The women’s race was won by Ciara Durkan in 17:36. However, Niamh Boland and Adrienne Jordan worked together throughout, managing to see off the challenge of 3 Liffey Valley runners, to place respectively 3rd and 4th (38th and 40th, respectively, overall) in 18:48 and 18:54. Moreover, Adrienne was able to secure her F40 age category win. Dee Ni Chearbhaill was next (65th overall, 14th woman, 4th F40, in 20:41), and between them the three athletes (all, incidentally, masters) were able to take second senior team place (21) only one point behind Liffey Valley (20) and ahead of Sportsworld (29). Rachel Yorke was next home, in 20:51 (71st overall, 17th woman), followed by Emer Kenny (87th overall, 21st woman, in 21:18), Rebecca Fleming (93rd overall, 23rd woman, in 21:37) back home from Malta for Christmas, Helena Walsh (93rd overall, 23rd woman, in 21:37) and Olwyn Dunne (102nd overall, 28th woman, 4th F50, in 22:26). On the men’s side, Vinnie McGuinness was showing no signs of a sore head when he placed 11th in a time of 16:37. Mention should be made of Declan Ryan, a visually-impaired runner from Thurles who trains with us, who placed 23rd in 17:25. Brendan Glynn ran a smart and steady race to take 53rd place in 19:52 and he was followed by another visually-impaired athlete, Donnacha McCarthy, who with his guide, Dave Tilly, a recent new Crusader, placed 63rd in 20:39. Finally, hats should be doffed in a big way to the 80-year old John Fitzsimons (342nd in 31:58), who ran with his daughter Mary (343rd overall, 166th woman, in 32:00). John will be facing a challenge of a different sort in the next few days when he will have to go through a major operation. We all wish John the very best in recovering from his upcoming surgery. The results of 3 rounds of parkruns are listed below (with size of fields indicated). Some results should be highlighted and details of others provided where not recorded below. Of those omitted, on 23 December Sarah Lyons took part in a parkrun in Aylesbury in England and, in a field of 165 runners, Sarah placed 41st overall, 7th female, in 24:12. Likewise, in Chichester in England on the same day, Michael Wycherley placed 2nd in a field of 168 in a time of 19:13. Then on Christmas Day, James Cottle took part in a parkrun in Didcot in Oxfordshire. In a field of 171 runners, and on a twisty course of grass and tarmac, James placed 13th in a time of 19:55. Finally, in this list, Kris Ryan resumed park-running in her native Australia at the weekend, participating in the Coomera parkrun and placing 28th overall out of 137 participants, in a time of 24:29. In terms of notable performances in parkruns, on 23 December, Peter O’Toole placed 8th in St. Anne’s, an event in which we fielded 17 runners among the 381 participants on the day. Paul Flynn placed 4th out of nearly 200 runners in Kilkenny, in a time of 19:19. Similarly, on the same day, Dave Carter took 4th place (19:31) in the 138-strong field in Cabinteely, whilst David Timony placed 6th in Poolbeg in a time of 19:52. We fielded 7 runners in the event with its field of 274. Also, it was good to see that Lesley Ann Doughan placed 33rd overall (3rd woman) in 19:59 in the 459-strong field in Marlay on the same day. On 30 December, Brian Scanlan placed 10th out of 262 in a time of 19:36 in Malahide, whilst Timothy O’Donnell finished in 4th place in Clonakilty. The field measured just under 40 and Timothy’s time was 20:42. Kate Murray took 61st place overall (9th woman) in Marlay. Kate’s time was 23:58 and the field measured 303.Two other runners placed 5th in their respective events. Sharon Woods took 34th place overall, 5th woman, in a time of 24:32 in the 106-strong field in Tymon, whilst Anthony O’Reilly likewise placed 5th in the nearly 40-strong field in Cootehill. His time was 20:42. Finally, Darina Scully and Russell Murphy also had strong placings on Saturday, with Darina placing 12th overall in the 75-strong field in River Valley (3rd woman finisher) in a time of 24:29 and Russell placing 9th in Poolbeg in the nearly 50-strong field. Russell’s time was 22:53. On New Year’s Day there was the opportunity to run in two parkruns. Colm Kernan, Orlaith de Burca, Lisa Shine and Kate Murray took full advantage of this. Colm ran 19:39 (13th out of 292) in St. Anne’s as well as 19:49 (15th out of 244) in Father Collins. Kate ran 24:06 (53rd overall out of 233, 3rd woman) in Tymon and also 26:27 (80th overall out of 180, 22nd woman) in Bushy Dublin. Meanwhile, Orlaith and Lisa ran in Porterstown and Hatstown. Orlaith ran 29:13 (142nd out of 220, 45th female) and 28:23, respectively(84th overall, out of 143, 27th female)whilst Lisa ran 32:32 (172nd overall out of 220, 66th female) and 37:04 (133rd overall, out of 143, 62nd female), respectively. Darina Scully placed 34th overall, 4th woman, in 22:27 in Father Collins alongside Colm. Finally, it was good to see the husband and wife team of Tomas Dunne and Suzanne Martin in a rare appearance together in Cabinteely. In a field of 109 runners, Suzanne placed 35th overall, 2nd woman, in a time of 25:34, whilst Tom took 8th spot in 22:12. Many thanks to Peter Mooney for several of the photos in this report.
