This week’s report brings news of recent success among the JuCru as well up-to-date reports on senior members of the club. Scroll down to read more. The Leinster indoors took place over the weekend and the results were as follows: In the M50 age category Bob Lyne won gold in the long jump (3.8m), bronze in the shot put (10.76m) and bronze in the high jump (1.3m), whilst John O'Loughlin won silver in the 60m (8:07), silver in the 200m (27:57) and bronze in the 400m (59:67). In the M60 age category Liam Lyster took silver in the 60m (no time) and silver in the 200m (30:07). Nick Ennis took bronze in the senior 200m (22:60), whilst Garret Dunne placed 11th in the senior 3,000m (10:26:35). Kate Murray was our only female representative on Sunday, and, with little experience of sprinting either indoors or out, gamely taking on both the 60m and the 200m, where she placed, respectively, 9th (no time) and 8th (33:86) in her O/40 age category. Early on Sunday morning Ciaran Diviney took part in the Tokyo marathon, which was won by Wilson Kipsang in 2:03:58, just 61s off the World record, which he had hoped to break, whilst fellow Kenyan Sarah Chepchirchir recorded the first women’s result in Japan under 2:20. In windy but sunny weather Ciaran completed the new flatter course, the sixth major (alongside Boston, New York, Chicago, Berlin and London), in a highly satisfactory 2:39:49. Considering he couldn’t run 3 weeks ago with a calf tear, it was some result, just a minute or so off his PB established in London. Ciaran reported that he struggled for the last 10k, understandable perhaps given his preparation, but it turned out to be, in his words, a good training session for London which he tackles again at the end of April. There were apparently lots of spectators as would be expected but they were quite reserved and made little noise, the difference between Tokyo and Dublin! Kris Ryan took part in the 3 marathons in 2 days challenge in County Mayo over the weekend. She reported that she knows that when a course is described as flat in the West there is some playing with the truth, and that it can really lash rain. Both were the case over the weekend. Each of the 3 marathons took place on a different course (described as flat). On Saturday the first marathon was at 7am with a small loop followed by 5 larger 5.3 mile loops on road and through the Belleek Forest. Kris finished in 4.06.25, 19th out of 61 finishers. The next marathon commenced later that day at 3pm, and was held on a tarmac path around a park. It had many slopes, and was certainly not flat. Runners enjoyed 28 laps of a 1,550m loop and Kris finally finished 5 hours and 3 minutes later, 13th out of 35. The final race was on Sunday morning at 8am, a trail through Belleek Forest for 8 loops at 5.3k. Heavy wind and rain turned the course into a treacherous mud bath with a substantial climb. Indeed, one severe downhill section claimed the odd twisted ankle and some pulled muscles. Kris finally finished in, what she reported as, a personal worst of 5.26.10. 17th out of 41, but had done enough over the weekend successfully to secure 3rd female overall for the overall challenge. On Sunday, Luke Horan took part in the Adare 10k down in Limerick. He reported that conditions were tough in the wind and rain, but acquitted himself well with a 41:51 finish that was good enough to give him 75th spot out of 726 runners in the race. The first IMRA winter league race of the season took place on Ticknock on Saturday. The well-known course that takes runners up to Three Rock and Fairy Castle, providing a panoramic view of Dublin and involving a climb of about 330m over a distance greater than 6K, was technically quite challenging for the competitors. Parts of the course were quite muddy between large areas of rocky ground. There were 152 runners, among whom were 3 Crusaders: Brian McGuckin (in training for the Milan marathon in early April) placed 21st in 39:29 (7th in his age category). Anthony O’Reilly took 31st place in 41:14 (10th in the same age category) and Jeff Fitzsimons finished in 59th place with a time of 45:41. Another new parkrun has started in Dublin, the latest attempt to take the pressure off Marlay Park. The latest ran its first event on Saturday in Bushy Park, Terenure and attracted 232 participants, including 4 of our fellow members. Newcomer Ciaran Smyth took 10th place in 20:21, followed home by Kate Murray (in a warm up for the following day’s Leinster indoor masters competition) in 45th place overall (6th woman) in 24:39. Next came Maria Pertl (59th overall, 11th woman, in 25:43), and Maria was followed by Mairead Cashman (108th overall, 30th woman, in 29:37). Marlay, in the meantime, attracted 410 runners. Alex Romano placed 7th there in a time of 19:28. Colm Kernan was also a sole representative for the club in St. Anne’s where he placed 200th out of just over 400 runners. Colm's training run time was 26:39 and bolted onto a longer stint. Dave Cuddy continues to run in Athlone. In a modest field of 26 runners he placed 3rd in a time of 20:36. Likewise, Lisa Shine was another solo runner for us in Ballincollig where she placed 68th overall (6th female) out of nearly 300 runners in 24:12. Finally, Olwyn Dunne is one of the principal organisers of the Cabinteely parkrun and not only did she and Joe celebrate the 3rd anniversary of his heart attack survival in Sean Moore Park but also the day marked the 100th running of this particular parkrun. We had 5 runners in the event, including Olwyn. Emer Kenny was first home in the contingent, taking 44th spot overall (9th woman home) (out of 134 runners) in a time of 26:15. Colm Foley was next in 27:02 (53rd place), followed by Mairin Shine and Orlaith de Burca practically side by (respectively, 82nd and 83rd overall (22nd and 23rd women) in 28:57 and 28:58). Olwyn completed the group with a 29:59 finish (93rd overall, 30th woman). Many congratulations to the Dunne household! John Caird reports that the club had a highly successful juvenile Dublin indoor championships in the new National Indoor Arena in Abbotstown on the weekend of 10th, 11th and 12th February. 87 Cru juvenile athletes took part in the championships over the weekend and there was excellent feedback from athletes, parents and coaches. A number of Crusader athletes qualified for nationals and these and medal winners are listed below. John would like to give a huge thankyou to Maria & Olivia who insured all the athletes got their numbers and knew when their event was on. Thanks should also go to Brian, Jim and Moya who officiated all weekend: without providing officials Crusaders’ athletes would not be allowed to compete. A thank you should also go to Bob, Luca, John, Paul and all the coaches who spent the weekend warming athletes up, advising, encouraging, congratulating.... and more. A big thankyou should go to all the parents who brought the athletes and created a stunning atmosphere in the arena. Finally, a big thankyou to all the young athletes who competed with a smile and demonstrated excellent sportsmanship all weekend. His winning jump of 7.59m was not as far as he has jumped in the previous 2 years in defending his title, but then he had a significant margin of half a metre on his strongest rival on Sunday at the new indoor arena at Abbotstown. Whilst no other national titles were won by Crusaders over the weekend, there were some sterling efforts on display. Mary Horgan managed to get into the 800m final as a fastest loser in the heats and came in 6th in a super time of 2:13:17. Alix Hughes competed in both the shot put where she placed 8th with a throw of 9.21m and in the 60mH, and, with a time of 9:58, taking 7th position in a strong field. James Kelly placed 5th in the shot put with a throw of 13.66m and, finally, after qualifying for the 800m final on Saturday in respectively 2nd place and as a fastest qualifier in their heat, Kevin Woods and Kieron Sexton found the going tough in the tactical final. Both athletes recorded times slower than their qualifying heat, but still managed to run 1:58:26 and 2:01:07 to place 6th and 8th respectively. Alan Sheehy made a trip to Armagh midweek to witness the 2th running of the men’s international 5K there and also participate in the men’s 3K. In order to qualify for the Armagh 5k race, each athlete had to be capable of running under 17 minutes and of the 170 odd who ran on the night it was incredible that 80 of the athletes from all over Ireland, the UK, Europe and the USA ran 15:00 or under (a new record for the event) with almost a dead heat for 1st place which was won by Englishman Ben Connor in 13:55, just missing the course record by 1 second. On the same course, which is not totally flat and involves a 1km loop with a slight drag on each lap, not noticeable initially, but becoming so over time, Alan ran an excellent 10:15, still, surprisingly, only good enough to put him in 86th place in a field of 169 runners. It would have been good to report on the BHAA XC results from ALSAA at the weekend, where Karl Fahy won the mixed 5 mile event after several attempts in previous races and Fiona narrowly missed out on a podium place in the women’s two mile race, but the narrative and detail will have to wait until the results are published, hopefully later in the week. We do know that the women's race had some 30 competitors including Fiona, Dee Ni Chearbhaill, Lisa Shine and Susan Walsh, whilst the longer race involved at least Karl, Ger Forde, Karl Walsh, Frank Hague, Tom Dunne, Mike McGovern, Robbie Moore and Brendan Glynn in quite a large field. Over the weekend Kris Ryan and Leo Lundy took on the “last one standing” ultra-marathon in Castleward. The event took place on a hilly, muddy and technical 4.2 mile loop around the national trust estate near Strangford in Co Down, famous for its stately home with both Georgian and Edwardian architecture, and more recently as the film location for Winterfell in Game Of thrones. Starting at midday on Saturday, competitors had 1 hour to finish the lap or be eliminated from the event. If the runner was not eliminated he or she then a choice either to retire or to go out for another lap starting on the hour every hour. 155 runners started the race at noon and there was continual attrition; by the time night fell only half the field was left. Leo reported that he found himself in trouble initially after 40 miles, struggling with stiffness and cold during the enforced stops between laps. Even so, he then struggled onto to complete 13 laps or 54.6 miles before being eliminated at 1am on Sunday morning with fewer than 50 runners still left in the race. Kris fared much better with the format, crunching out the laps for 24 hours and covering over 100 miles, to come well in the top 20 overall and 2nd woman finisher beaten only by the current Irish women’s 24hr champion, who only needed to run one more lap after Kris dropped out. Incredibly, the race continued into Monday, with the final two male runners timed out on lap 36 or 150 odd miles. The usual level of participation in parkruns took place on Saturday. Fiona Bane distinguished herself, not only with a great PB time but also placing first finisher, 12th overall, in the more than 100-strong field in Poppintree. Likewise, Brian Carroll ran well in Ballincollig, coming home in 2nd place in 18:05 in a field of more than 380 participants, which also included Mairead Cashman, returning from injury, who placed 190th overall (49th woman) in 28:49. Meanwhile, there were 530 runners in Marlay, with Anthony O’Reilly, making a welcome comeback, taking 15th place in 19:26. Kate Murray was our 2nd Crusader home in 171st place overall, 29th woman, in 24:29 and Kate was followed by Mary Noelle Rohan (378th overall, 116th woman) in a time of 30:04. Neil Brown and Orlaith de Burca joined 190 other runners in Shanganagh, with Neil placing 58th in 25:32 and Orlaith taking 105th spot overall, 36th woman, in 29:26. Mairin Shine was our sole representative in Cabinteely, placing 73rd overall (24th woman, in a time of 29:05. The field measured 133 runners, whilst Tymon had a field of 192. Natasha Murray and Sharon Woods participated there, with Natasha placing 175th overall (70th woman) in 39:47 and Sharon with her stately 39:58, placing 177th overall, 72nd woman. Finally, we had 4 runners in St Anne’s along with 390 others on Saturday morning. Our first clubmate home was Anthony owns in 23rd place in a time of 20:37. Anthony was followed by Colm Kernan with another of his long training runs adding to the event (88th in 23:14), John Fitzsimons who will turn 80 this year showing that he’s still got it (244th in 28:55) and Ciara McElligott (285th overall, 89th woman, in 30:51). Hats off to all who braved the Nor’easter and its incredible windchill to take part in the National 50K championships in Donadea Forest on Saturday and then the National Masters XC held on a challenging course on the side of a hill in Waterford IT on Sunday. We start with the Donadea 50K. It had 162 finishers, but one gets the impression there were a fair number of casualties, judging from the camera roll, which showed several high profile athletes who appear not to have finished on the 5 x10K looped course. The cold made for an extremely challenging experience for our intrepid runners. The championship went to a Clonliffe Harrier, Brian McMahon, in a time that was slightly slower than those established by Gary O’Hanlon in previous years, but a worthy winner nonetheless and his margin of victory over St. Finbarr’s Alan O’Shea was just under 4 minutes. The women’s title went to Louise Smith of North Belfast, another clear winner. Denis Murphy was the first Crusader home in 58th spot and an excellent time of 4:18:30, placing 2nd in his age category, just two minutes behind the age category winner in 55th place. Olwyn Dunne, pacing the 4:30 finishers, came in next in 4:30:03, her job done, and Olwyn was followed by Diarmuid Byrne who found the going tough despite treating it as a training run but still was able to put together a 4:33:11 time. Diarmuid is working towards the Vienna marathon coming up on 23 April and this race will have helped in his preparations. Maria Pertl helped for a while in pacing Diarmuid whilst Joe Dunne, like Olwyn, provided general pacing support. There were no medals but plenty of guts and determination in evidence in the National Masters XC. The women’s 4K race on Sunday had nearly 200 runners competing in it and a truly excellent field on a soft going course that involved one short 1k loop followed by 2 long 1.5k ones on the side of a hill. This time Donore’s Barbara Cleary (15:04) didn’t get the win, but she did place 3rd behind overall and O/40 winner Dooneen Limerick's Rosemary Ryan (14:51) who represented Ireland in the 5,000m in the Sydney Olympics. 2nd was Corran's Sarah Doohan who won the O/35 category. Our 6-woman team was led home by Grainne Regan who placed 90th in 18:07, followed by Kate Murray (103rd in 18:23), with Geraldine Clements close behind (105th in 18:31) and Kris Ryan and Triona Quill finishing more or less side by side (139th and 140th respectively with the same time of 19:23). Mairin Shine completed the group, coming home in 187th place (23:46). The men’s 7k race involved 1 short loop, followed by 4 long. Crusaders men’s team placed 12th overall in a large field of 200 runners, with Rob Cross taking individual 52nd place in 26:10, followed by Jason Kehoe in 67th (26:43) and Ger Forde taking 72nd spot (26:49). The 4-man team was completed by Eddie Nugent who came home in 101st place (28:04). The overall race was won by Michael Harty of East Cork in a time of 23:24. We had participants in several parkruns on Saturday morning, but the most exotic has to be the one held on Hamilton Island in Australia in which Ian Kinsella took part and came home as first finisher. The island is actually only 5k square and it was hilly, windy and according to Ian, quite creative in its route (using boardwalks and footpaths around a marina)! Lack of local knowledge led to the comparatively slow time of 19:42 by Ian’s standards, but he was able to see off the rest of the field which measured fewer than 20 runners. Back home, Yvonne Macauley took on a hilly course in Castlehaven in West Cork in the wind and placed first finisher in the women’s event, 2nd overall in a field of more than 40 runners, with a time of 21:28, which shows how challenging the event was. Lisa Shine was also a first finisher, taking 7th place overall in the Castle Demense (sic) parkrun in Macroom Co. Cork in a time of 24:21 (full results have yet to be published and the report will be updated once they are available). Marius McNicholas continues to feel his way back to form, placing 5th out of nearly 200 in a time of 20:39 in Waterstown, whilst Dave Cuddy also took 5th place out of nearly 50 competitors in Athlone in a time of 20:05. A relative newcomer to parkruns, Gary Park had an easy run around Shanganagh, placing 113th out of 167 participants in a time of 30:49, whilst Sharon Woods appears to have had a similar approach in Tymon, placing 160th overall (58th female) in a time of 39:42. There were nearly 190 runners taking part. In Marlay David Long continues to show significant improvement, placing 25th in a field of nearly 540 participants, in a time of 19:57, whilst Killian Barry came home in 43rd place (20:45) and Mary Noelle Rohan, 432nd overall (148th female finisher in 31:29). Kris Ryan and Kate Murray prepared themselves for the Masters race the following day by running in the Castletown parkrun in Celbridge. In a field of nearly 280 participants, Kate placed 121st overall (29th female) in 29:01 and Kris came home just behind in 122nd overall (30th female) in 29:03. We start with the BHAA races which took place in great running conditions on the hills near the Magazine fort in the Phoenix Park on Saturday morning. There was little wind, but the ground was particularly muddy after Friday’s torrential rainfall. 16 runners from the club took advantage of our local knowledge of the course as we train on it regularly, but, with all the running on it, the ground was severely churned up by the end of the 3 lap, 4-mile, mixed race, following the 2-mile women's race, and it made for slippery conditions in places, particularly on the descent of one gully and the climb up the other. Those who train with the club on Saturdays will be familar with the anti-clockwise 1 mile loop, two repeats of which made up the women's race, whilst the men ran the same 1 mile loop from the gun, followed by two one and a half mile loops that simply extended the course around the trees closer to the Papal Cross at the top of the Khyber Pass. Niamh Boland, Orla Kennedy, Susan Walsh and Olwyn Dunne joined BHAA regulars and many Lord Mayor’s Challenge runners to take part in the women’s 2 mile event. Although suffering from some quad tightness, and below her best as a result, Niamh was able to squeeze out a 4th place finish after, at one stage, having fallen back behind Orla who was in hot pursuit and is in fine form at this minute. Neither were too far back from the runners in front, but it was something of a procession in the end, with Niamh and Orla, who finished in 5th spot, providing the excitement on the run in. Niamh was able to draw some consolation from the race by winning her age category. Susan Walsh and Olwyn Dunne also took part, with Susan taking 29th place and Olwyn a little further back with a placing yet really to be determined. We will update the report once we have a firmer handle on all the results, which are being worked on at time of writing. The mixed 4 mile race saw more bunching upfront for a good part of the race with Michael Kiely, who is running extremely well right now, able to break free to take the lead definitively on the third lap and win the race in fine style. No times are yet available, but Karl Fahy was able to move up a place this week to 3rd, having finished several races recently in 4th spot. Among the 200 or so runners in the race, Karl was followed by John Mulvihill in 10th, pursued closely by Rob Cross, winner of his age category, in 11th spot. Next came Michael O'Conor in 14th, followed by Ger Forde in 15th. Frank Hague worked his way through the field to pick up 36th place, as did James Cottle who, after a steady start, took a few scalps over the 3 laps to place 43rd and win his age category. Niall McGeorge was not too far behind in 51st, with Tom Dunne in 54th just a little further back. The contingent was completed by Mike McGovern in 69th, Robbie Moore (77th), Tony Hackett (105th), Jocelyn Dufetel (113th), Brendan Glynn (115th) and Paul Kelly (with a place yet to be determined). Times have yet to be allocated and the race report will be updated once they are available. On Sunday we had a significant turnout of 21 runners in Swords for the last XC race of the WM&T winter league. The 2 mile event was conducted on the relatively flat Balheary playing fields. Again, full details have yet to be provided and the report will be amended to give any further information, but the A team were able to take team bronze in the Gold division just behind Sportsworld A and Clonliffe A, whilst Crusaders B managed to take 4th place in the same division just behind and ahead of Trim A and Dunboyne A. Crusaders C were 6th in the Silver division, whilst Crusaders D were unable to provide enough results to get a place in the Bronze division. After previously placing in the runner-up positions, Fiona Shine showed how much she continues to improve and was a convincing winner of Sunday's race which comprised at least 104 club runners. Fiona was followed by the strong running of her team mates with Grainne Regan in 7th, Lisa Shine 11th, Darina Scully 16th, Emily Ferghan 20th, Kate Murray 21st, Geraldine Clements 22nd, Kris Ryan 24th, Emer Kenny 27th, Carina Davidson 31st, Helena Maier 33rd, Olwyn Dunne, in her 2nd XC 2 miler of the weekend 42nd, Maria Pertl 46th, Arwen Cusack 49th, Niamh Quinn 53rd, Rhona McGrath 58th, Orlaith de Burca 61st, Fiona Craven 70th, Sharon O'Dea 79th, Mairin Shine 87th and Lorraine Fitzsimons 101st. It has now been confirmed as well that Fiona was the overall individual winner of the winter league which probably renders her ineligible for any more WM&T events unfortunately. Many congratulations to her all the same. Also on Sunday there were two classy 10 mile road races, one in Trim in Co.Meath and the other in Dungarvan, Co Waterford. Both races were conducted on relatively fast flat courses and attracted large quality fields. Dungarvan, which always sells out quickly, had nearly 2,000 competitors for its 26th edition, whilst Trim, in only its 3rd year, involved nearly 1,300. Dee Ni Chearbhaill was our lone representative in Dungarvan and she placed 499th overall, 45th woman, in a time of 1:12:24, a great time considering Dee has done little long distance running since giving birth last year. Meanwhile, in Trim, Joe Walsh was capitalising on his recent strong form to place 77th in a PB time of 1:01:41 (his wife Alma also got a PB in the same race). Joe was followed by Brian Leonard in 177th place (1:06:50), who is training for the London marathon, John McAuley who ran 1:07:31 to place 189th and Fiona Bane who placed 682nd overall (171st woman) in 1:24:13. We had several athletes help to christen the new indoor track in Abbotstown over the weekend. Mary Horgan ran 2:14:76 to place 8th in the 800m. Mathew Behan continues his great run of form when he competed in 2 series races in the 60mH. In the first race he placed 3rd in a time of 8:15 and he won the second in a time of 8:25. Jason Harvey placed 2nd to an athlete from a London club in what looked to be an A race in the 400m in a time of 49:16, whilst Nick Ennis also placed 2nd in what looked to be the B race in 50:47 and masters athlete, John O’Loughlin, finished 3rd in the F race with a time of 59:43. Clubmates participated in 7 parkruns on Saturday morning. David Carter came home as first finisher in the event in Navan, in a time of 19:39, ahead of more than 160 other runners, whilst Emma Flynn finished 2nd female (19th overall) in Cabinteely in a time of 22:19 with similar numbers involved. Emma was followed by Leo Lundy (32nd in 23:24), and then 3 runners preparing for the following day’s WM&T: Kris Ryan (135th overall, 61st female, in 33:18), Mairin Shine (136th overall, 62nd female, in 33:19) and Lisa Shine (137th overall, 63rd female, in the same time). A similar warm-up for a race the following day was undertaken by Fiona Bane who ran with 5 other Crusaders in St. Anne’s. Fiona was preparing for the Trim 10 miler and placed 90th overall in the parkrun, 8th female finisher, in another super time of 23:18. Also running in a field of nearly 450 were Diarmuid Byrne, who is preparing for the Donadea 50k next week and who placed 20th in St. Anne’s in 20:03, Marius McNicholas, on his way back (22nd in 20:09), Colm Kernan who generally uses the parkrun as part of a longish training run (77th in 22:45) and 79 year old John Fitzsimons (308th in 29:54). In Poppintree Aoife Quinn was delighted with her first outing since a major knee operation (90th overall, 35th female, in 30:22) in a field of nearly 160 participants whilst David Long (105th in 22:38) and Tom O’Rourke (125th in 23:18) ran with nearly 600 others in Marlay Park. One result we missed from last week involved Lorraine Healy who is a member of Moyne AC in Co. Tipperary and who trains with Crusaders. Along with over 100 other runners, Lorraine took part in Moyne’s New Year 5k last weekend and, in extremely rainy conditions, won the women’s race in an excellent time of 19:10. Finally, many congratulations should go to Aoife (nee Quigley) and Paul O’Connell (of Sportsworld) on the birth of their daughter Maeve at the start of the weekend. Hopefully, Maeve will prove in the future to be another member of the increasingly successful Crusader women’s team! BHAA Garda XC women’s 2 mile Overall place Name Cat.
