International Masters team medals in Madrid whilst the electricity flowed in Dunboyne and Clongowes25/3/2018
A few Crusaders headed over to Madrid last week to compete in the European Masters Indoors, which also included a 5k cross country race for each age category at the end of the competition. There were some excellent results for both the Irish team and for Crusaders with three of our club-mates bringing home a medal. At the start of the week Ilona McElroy took part in the women’s W35 3,000m, placing 7th in a season’s best time of 10:47.01. Bob Lyne followed, taking 12th place in the M50 3,000m track walk in a time of 19:10.68. Considering that Bob has only recently taken up the discipline it was an excellent learning experience for him. On Friday Niamh Boland ran in the 2nd of two races for the W35 1,500m in which she came 7th in a time of 4:49.79 in what appeared to be a highly tactical race, and when the results were combined she was 7th overall. Then, on the last day, Simon Everard took the anchor leg in the M35 4x200m relay. The team took bronze behind Team GB and Spain in what might be an Irish indoor record for the category of 1:37.01. Finally, in the 5k XC, Niamh and her partner Karl Fahy were both scorers for the Irish team in their O/35 age category, bringing home the silver medal. Niamh placed 9th out of 25 finishers in 20:17 and was 3rd scorer of 3, whilst Ilona came agonisingly close to a team medal finishing in 10th individual spot and 4th team place in 20:32. The winner ran 18:55 on what was an extremely challenging course with a big hill and really windy conditions. Meanwhile, Karl was 2nd scorer of 3 in a time of 17:03, placing 12th out of 62 finishers. The winner ran 16:07. Congrats to all our intrepid masters! What a difference a week makes. In benign conditions around the country several road races took place. We had runners in Dunboyne in the classic 4 miler there, as well as in Clongowes in Co. Kildare. At least 4 Crusaders took part in the Eirgrid-sponsored 49th edition of the Dunboyne 4 mile race with Adrienne Jordan leading the charge, placing 68th overall (out of nearly 600 runners), 7th female finisher and 1st O/40 in a super time of 23:52. In a race which saw the return to our shores of the Kenyan Peter Somba, winning from Mick Clohisey, William Maunsell and Sean Hehir (who managed a 14:32 5k PB in the race), Tom Dunne took 131st place in 26:09, followed not too far behind by Denis Murphy (134th in 26:24) and the contingent was completed by Paul Kelly who came home in 506th spot in 38:29. Dee Ni Chearbhaill had a lucrative day in the Clane AC-organised Clongowes 5k, joining nearly 260 other runners and placing 25th overall, 3rd female finisher and 1st in her age category in a time of 20:44. The course was, naturally, hillier than advertised! Of interest to members, Sean Murphy, Dee’s husband, who trains with the club, took part in Dunboyne placing 48th in 22:41. Finally, onto the parkrun results. Not surprisingly, there was an increase in participation generally around the country. The improving weather has brought people out, although it has to be said that Olwyn Dunne was still able to find snow. Olwyn was running in the Tmiriyazevsky parkrun in Moscow, along with 67 other participants, placing 35th overall, 5th female, in a time of 26:39. Closer to home, Brian Scanlan was first finisher in River Valley in 20:38, whilst Amy Brogan placed 21st overall, 2nd female finisher, in Waterstown, in a time of 26:49. In St Anne’s Matt Cranley, running this time without the buggy, placed 9th in 19:03, followed by Aoife Quinn (155th overall, 37th female) in 25:47. We had a good few in Poolbeg, with Kieran Finucane finishing in 18th spot (20:49), followed by Russell Murphy (32nd in 22:40), Colm Foley (35th in 23:02), Fiona Bane (45th overall, 5th female, in 23:50), Louise O’Riordan (73rd overall, 18th female, in 27:12) and Don Anderton (111th in 33:57). Natasha Murray was our lone participant in Brickfields, placing 67th overall, 37th female, in 48:27. Likewise, in Griffeen, Gillian Errity was on her own, taking 73rd spot overall, 8th female place, in 26:14. In Marlay, we had 4 runners: Anthony O’Reilly was first across the line in 24th place (20:19), followed closely by Killian Barry (25th in 20:21) and then by Kate Murray (92nd overall, 12th female, in 23:23) and Ailsa Berkeley (185th overall, 34th female, in 25:39). Janet McManus ran in Shanganagh, taking 41st place overall, 6th female, in 24:29, whilst Kevin Flynn was also a singleton in Porterstown, running 33:56 (92nd place). 3 Crusaders joined the field in Cabinteely, with Niamh Quinn leading our contingent home in 29th place overall, 7th woman, in 24:37. Niamh was followed by Fiona Shine (37th overall, 9th woman, in 25:04) and Lisa Shine (38th overall, 10th woman, in 25:06). Lastly, but by no means least, Leo Lundy grabbed the lanterne rouge to mop up backmarkers in Fairview. Dunboyne 4 mile race (589) Overall place Name Cat. Several races would have had to have been cancelled over the Paddy’s day weekend on account of the weather, the largest of them being the MSB-organised St. Patrick’s Festival 5k set in the heart of Dublin, one of the highlights of the road racing calendar. We had well over 30 Crusaders intending to run, but the blizzard conditions of part 2 of the Beast from the East got the better of us. No one had been expecting how severe the conditions would be around Dublin, but we did have some inkling perhaps of what was to come in experiencing the fierce winds that accompanied the snow in all the races that went ahead on Saturday. Despite the weather, there were some impressive performances and hats off to everyone who ventured out to race over the weekend. We had 4 runners in what is usually a fast race on a relatively flat course, the event being the Mullingar Half marathon. It was fast again, but without the breezy conditions it could apparently have been even faster. Cork native John Fahy excelled himself with a PB run of 1:20:29 to come home in 23rd place in a field of nearly 1,200 participants. John was followed by Jane Wallace who treated the race as a training run, placing 206th overall (22nd woman home) in 1:37:26. Jane, like John, is preparing for the Hamburg marathon at the end of April and, like John, will have derived some confidence from the experience. Next came Aoife Clarke (291st overall, 42nd woman) in 1:41:44 and Aoife was followed by Carina Davidson (386th overall, 64th woman) in a time of 1:45:16. Newcomer Seamus Moore was our sole competitor in the Balbriggan Half. In a more modest field of 126, Seamus ran a great time of 1:28:18 to place 13th, a highly creditable performance considering he recently participated in the Seville marathon. Even in New York runners were not immune from the windy conditions. Paul Dempsey, another Hamburg-bound marathoner, travelled over there to run the New York Half marathon with its huge field. In windy conditions, on a course that ends on the hills of Central Park, Paul ran a PB time of 1:19:19, a 2 minute improvement over his previous best, finishing in 186th place out of nearly 22,000 finishers. The race was won by Ben True in 1:02:39. Back to Ireland and on Saturday we saw the first race of the Kia Race Series, the Streets of Portlaoise 5k. Just two of our club-mates ventured over to Co. Laoise to take part in what was a race of some quality among both men and women. In a field of nearly 700 runners, Michael O’Conor placed 23rd in a time of 16:40, whilst Helena Walsh finished in 119th place overall, 21st female competitor home, in a time of 21:05. Two of our extreme distance runners were out again at the weekend. Pat Quill has shrugged off his recent leg injury and this weekend took part in the 55 mile Hardmoors Ultra. The trail race involved over 2,000m of ascent over rocky hills and had a cut-off limit of 16 hours. In an event that Pat felt was not too challenging technically, but which was made harder by the wintry conditions, there were nearly 180 retirees from the race. Pat came home in 117th place out of the 141 finishers in a time of 13:36:11. Having started the race at 09:10 in the morning in sub-zero temperatures, he finished just before 11 in the evening and at one point was almost persuaded to drop out by an official because he appeared to be getting hypothermia. Not to be outdone, Leo Lundy set out on his last couple of long runs in preparation for the Belfast to Dublin ultra on Good Friday. His first was the Shane's Castle ultra trail race on the North shore of Lough Neagh in Co. Antrim involving 40.1 miles in atrocious conditions. This was followed by the St Patrick's ultra, Whiteabbey, also in Antrim. This event involved not only 29.5 miles in freezing temperatures and 50 mph winds but also meant getting a soaking from the waves breaking over the sea wall several times each mile. Leo ran well, placing 6th out of 140 finishers. Quite wisely, he has decided to put his feet up now for a couple of weeks. As usual, we had some decent performances in the weekend’s parkruns, runners not having been put off too much by the conditions. First finisher places went to Lisa Shine in New Ross in a time of 22:23 (11th overall), Darina Scully in Father Collins in a time of 23:00 (10th place overall) and Catherine Thornton (2nd overall), who added some miles both before and after the event and finished in a time of 20:14. We also had podium results from Niamh Corby who, likewise, used the parkrun in Cabinteely as a training run, placing 5th overall, 2nd woman finisher, in 20:40. 2nd place went also to Sarah Lyons in Fairview (12th overall in 25:52), which additionally saw Phelim Murray run and finish in 7th place (24:09).There were other good runs from Brian Carroll in Griffeen with his 5th place finish in 19:50 and from James Murphy in Poolbeg. James placed 4th in 18:52 and he was followed by Tim O’Donnell (10th in 20:55) and Colm Foley (28th in 23:16). We had 4 runners in St. Anne’s. Peter O’Toole continues to show strong form with a 5th place finish in 18:26, followed by Eugene O’Neill (13th in 19:18) making a welcome return to competitive running, Matt Cranley, as usual with his buggy (29th in 20:13) and Aoife Quinn (154th overall, 22nd female finisher in 26:50). Sharon Woods placed 29th overall, 6th woman home, in 25:29 in Tymon whilst Kate Murray (109th overall, 9th female, in 24:02) and Mairead Cashman (228th overall, 53rd female, in 27:39) took on Marlay Park. Finally, before retiring to a pub in the Midlands to watch the Grand Slam after supporting son Jack in the Ireland U-20 match against England the night before, Olwyn Dunne ran in the Coventry parkrun, placing 75th overall (7th woman home) in a field exceeding 420 runners. Olwyn’s time was 23:57. Finally, a result that was missed from last week's report needs to be mentioned. Donnacha McCarthy and Dave Tilly from the club became national duathlon champions. The long trip to Letterkenny was worth it as Donnacha and Dave topped the field in the standard distance: 10k run, 40k bike and 5k run. Congratulations to all! There was no race report last week, so we’re playing a little catch up, which will be addressed below. This weekend saw two events in which we saw reasonable participation from Crusaders. The first is Saturday’s holding of the Irish masters Indoor Championships on the AIT track in Athlone, followed by the Meath Spring Half marathon road race hosted by Bohermeen on Sunday. We might have expected to have had more racing generally. However, the BHAA was obliged to cancel the cross country race, the last of the season, in Maynooth because the grounds were considered not fit for purpose after the snow and rain we’ve been experiencing. A couple of IMRA races were also cancelled. So, no XC or mountain running to report this week. In the masters indoors, Ilona McElroy took part in her 2nd event since becoming a master, the women’s F35 3,000m. Ilona battled away to take 4th place in 10:57.93 behind a dominant Kelly Neely (9:38.02). Simon Everard, Bob Lyne and John O’Loughlin took part in multiple events. Simon took bronze in the M35 60m (7.67), silver in the 400m (54.05) and 5th in the tightly packed 200m (24.62). Meanwhile, John O’Loughlin took gold in the M50 400m (57.61) and 4th in both the 60m (7.98) and 200m (26.39). Finally, Bob Lyne took bronze in the M50 3,000m walk (18:37.03), 4th in the shot put (9.19m) and 6th in the weight for distance (6.00m). On Sunday, we had 14 club mates run in Bohermeen in the Meath Spring Half marathon and 10k events. The half marathon race usually boasts a quality field and this year was no different, potentially enhanced by the cancellation of the Ballycotton 10. On a two loop, relatively flat, course with little wind, our recent recruit, Alma Hanevy, who is training for the Paris Marathon in early April, distinguished herself with a confidence-boosting 2nd place behind Maria McCambridge in a PB time of 1:26:42 (128th overall in a field of more than 900 competitors), taking some good scalps in the process and knocking off nearly 2 minutes from her previous best. Dee Ni Chearbhaill came into the race on the back of little training but still managed to come home under 1:40, in 319th place overall, 41st woman finisher, in 1:38:44. Dee was followed by Ciara Lehane (415th overall, 71st woman, in 1:44:31), Kate Murray (452nd overall, 83rd woman, in 1:47:17) and Celine Bonce, another marathoner in training (549th overall, 129th woman, in 1:51:05). The men ran well, too. Ciaran Diviney won his age category, placing 8th in a super time of 1:13:28 and he was followed by another marathoner, Kieran Little, wearing a Cru singlet for the first time and training for Boston, in 25th place (with a PB time of 1:16:23, an improvement of over 5 minutes). Warren Swords placed 52nd in 1:20:33 and he was followed by Dominick Branigan who, unfortunately, found the going tough (64th in 1:21:36). Next came Hamburg marathon-bound Eugene McDonough in an excellent PB time of 1:23:15, knocking over 2 minutes off his previous best, followed closely by Joe Walsh who, like his wife Alma, is training for Paris (89th in 1:23:46) and pulling out a great run on his way back from recent injury. Finally, Bob Manson turned in a satisfying 1:28:38 (156th place). Members will be interested to read that Sean Murphy, who trains with Crusaders, took an excellent 36th place in 1:19:10. We had two runners in the 10k event (again on a relatively flat course) with its 400+ participation. Newcomer Mick Smyth placed well in 21st spot (40:15), followed by Maria Kennedy, who is also training for Paris (85th overall, 23rd woman, in 48:51). Looking back to last week, we had 3 runners in the 441-strong Lusk 4 mile road race. Conditions would have been chilly, but thankfully, the roads would have been easier to negotiate than during the 4 days leading up to it, but possibly a little narrower than usual with snow on the sides. Our first Crusader home, on what proved in fact to be an extremely fast race, was Aoife Quinn (105th overall, 17th woman, in 29:01), followed by Geraldine Clements (140th overall, 29th woman, in 30:25) and Elaine Curran (228th overall, 75th woman, in 33:13. Also, last weekend, Leo Lundy took part in a tough ultra in Kent on Sunday at Kings Wood outside Challock. The whole race was run on thawing ice, starting with sheet ice and finishing with a quagmire. More than 3000ft climb and many hours of icy rain made it a real challenge. Leo’s 50k in the allotted time frame was, however, good enough for 8th overall out of 92 finishers. There were no parkruns in Ireland last weekend because of the extreme weather and the code red advice, but Kris Ryan and Leo Lundy were able to participate abroad. In Coomera, Australia, out of 124 runners, Kris placed 26th overall, 5th female, in a time of 23:47, whilst Leo ran in Basingstoke the day before his ultra, recording a time of 31:05 and placing 128th out of 196 participants. On Tuesday, we had at least one participant in the Sandymount 5k night run, that took place in Sean Moore Park and ventured out onto the beach. Ruth McNamara placed 135th overall out of 374 competitors in a time of 31:12. This weekend we seemed to have a generally reduced participation. Again Kris Ryan ran in Coomera, placing 30th overall, 8th female, in 23:51 in a field of 130, whilst Aidan Hudner ran as usual in Victoria Park, Glasgow, placing 49th out of a field of 262 in a time of 22:16. We had several runners in Poolbeg, 7 in all. David Timoney was first Crusader home in 6th place (20:39), followed by Zalan Kovacs (21st in 22:39), Colm Foley (24th in 23:05), Lisa Shine (26th overall, 2nd female, in 23:26), Aisling O’Connor (56th overall, 12th female, in 27:11), Kate Healy (62nd overall, 14th female, in 28:24) and Iseult Ni Chuinneagain (69th overall, 19th female, in 28:55). Joe Walsh prepped for his run in Bohermeen by finishing in 3rd place in Brickfields in a time of 19:36. Fiona Bane placed 18th overall, 4th woman, in Tramore outside Waterford. Fiona’s time was 24:13, whilst Olwyn Dunne and Mairead Cashman ran in Bushy Dublin, finishing, respectively in 53rd and 80th places overall (13th and 27th female finishers) in, respectively, 26:39 and 29:04. Neil Brown was our lone representative in a familiar haunt for him in Shanganagh. Neil placed 10th in 21:23. In Castletown, Denis Murphy took 15th spot in 21:34, followed by Aoife Quinn (24th overall, 2nd woman home, in a great time of 23:17). In St. Annes, Jonathan Claridge placed 8th in 18:41, whilst Matt Cranley continued to push his stroller to a time of 19:23, close to his stroller PB. Finally, the results in Poppintree seem to have been corrupted, so no individual times were recorded. Suffice it to say, Maria Pertl continues to improve, placing 51st overall, 16th woman home.
