There’s been so much going on this week, on track and on road, it’s hard to know where to start. Everywhere there have been warm conditions, which for track sprinting has been great, but even for some of the longer distance track racing and for the roads there have been PBs to get. We clearly must start with the national league first round that took place at the Mary Peters track in Belfast on Sunday. After at least an 8 years' absence we were able to field a women's team, which, because of the absence, had to start in the confusingly titled division 1, whilst the men continued to appear in the division above it, the premier division. After Sunday's performance, however, it is unlikely that the women will remain in the lower division for long, coming out of it at the end as clear winners of their match in the first round and 4th in the two pools combined, whilst the men are currently lying third overall. Both are well placed going into the second round, with 8 teams to go through to the final. For the men, event winners were Adam McMullen in the long jump with a PB and new Crusaders record of 7.88m and in the 100m, Jason Harvey in the 400mH, Oisin Taylor in the triple jump and then for those in the 4x400m relay team of Peter Murphy, Shane Keane, Jason and Adam. Nick Ennis was 2nd in the 400m, along with James Kelly in the shot put and the 4x100m relay team of Peter, Fearghal O'Hare, Ben Maze and Nick. James also went onto place 3rd in the discus along with Fearghal who achieved his 3rd place with a PB in the 800m. There were also excellent points contributions from Shane in the 200m (7th), Garret Dunne in the steeplechase and 1500m (6th in both), Peter in the high jump (7th), Bob Lyne in the walk (5th), 56lb throw (3rd) and Hammer (4th) and Patrick Gilceava in the javelin (4th). We don't have all the details yet from the women's event but there were wins in the 100m (Ciara Barry), 400m (Mary Horgan), 3000m (Ilona McElroy), 200m (Alix Hughes), 800m (Mary again, with possibly a PB) and the 4x400m relay squad (Mary, Ciara, Rachael). 2nd places were achieved in the 400mH (Ciara), 100mH (Alix) and shot (Alix), whilst there were 3rd places for the walk (Lisa Shine in her first attempt!), 1500m (Rachael), discus and triple jump (Ines Fetahovic). In the 4x100m (Lisa, Alix, Ines and Ciara) we placed 6th but otherwise there were 4th place finishes in the javelin (Ciara) and long jump (Ines). Hats off to everyone who contributed and we are really looking forward to repeating the success going forward. In the 5th Dublin graded meet on Wednesday in Tallaght stadium we had some excellent results. Matt Behan followed up his hurdling exploits of the previous weekend with a sprint on the flat, placing 1st in the men’s A 200m in a time of 22.83. In the men’s 200m C1, Patrick Saunders placed 1st in 25.11, followed by John O’Loughlin (3rd in 26.23) and Paul Kelly (7th in 34.37). In the C2 edition Abbas Bowen won in 25.58, followed by Graham Flynn in 4th (26.88). In the women’s 200m A, Alix Hughes placed 3rd in 28.20. Alix also took on the long jump placing 3rd with a leap of 4.47m, with Inez Fetahovic 4th with a jump of 4.12. Alix also contested the javelin with a throw of 12.76m (5th place). In the men’s 3000m A race Brian O’Kelly ran 9:02.41, a likely PB time for 8th place, whilst in the men’s C race, Frank Halligan (1st in 9:51.46) and Joe McDermott (4th in 10:01.11) both recorded PBs. Ilona McElroy took 6th place in the women’s 3000m (A, B and C), having started out steadily and recording a time of 10:49.42 in her first track race of the season. Frank went on to run in the 800m C race, placing 5th in 2:17.99, whilst Brendan Glynn won his D race in a PB time of 2:27.17, followed by Paul Kelly placed 6th in 3:29.66. Mary Horgan took 2nd place in the 800m A race in a time of 2:18.62, followed by Rachael Yorke (5th in 2:34.94). Finally, Shane Keane contested the long jump, leaping 6.52m to take 3rd place. We had large turnouts in Dunshaughlin for the Michael Manning 10k and then on the following day at the Irish Runner 5 mile in the Phoenix Park. The man who came second in Dunshaughlin, Freddie Keron Sittuk, actually won the following day, but he was not alone in taking on the two events back to back, as so did our own Kieran Little, who has been amazing us with his recent exploit in the tough conditions of Boston. In Dunshaughlin, Kieran came home in 25th place in a field of 758 finishers to lead our 20-strong contingent across the line in a time of 33:17. Then, on Sunday, he placed 10th out of 1,500, again to lead our 12-strong group home, in a time of 27:49. Other honourable mentions in Dunshaughlin should go to John Mulvihill (30th in 33:36), Ciaran Diviney (35th in 33:54 and 3rd O/45), Rob Cross (47th in 34:27 and 6th in his new age category of O/45), Joe McDermott (90th in 35:59) and Frank Hague (92nd in 36:04), both of whom got PBs. In addition, 4 other men ran under 40 minutes: Paul Flynn (125th in 37:07), Will Owens (159th in 38:15), Luke Davis (175th in 38:4) and Eddie Nugent (177th in 38:48). The first 4 Crusader men across the line also took 3rd place out of 60 teams. Meanwhile, Catherine Thornton led the women’s team home, placing 8th (184th overall) in a PB time of 39:12, with the team of Catherine, Kate Murray (363rd overall, 51st woman, 9th in her age category, in 45:36) and Ciara Lehane (368th overall, 55th woman, in 45:49) placing 5th out of 36 teams. Other notable PBs went to Miriam Logan (449th overall, 82nd woman, in 48:30) and Paul Kelly (673rd in 58:16). Of note, Sean Murphy of Run Hub and United Striders, who trains with the club, came home in 77th place in 35:38. Behind Kieran in the Irish Runner 5 mile came Ger Forde (20th in 29:00), followed by Karl Walsh (29th in 29:37), Damien Fitzgibbon (79th in 32:12) and Sean Smith (107th in 33:10) Top 200 places in both genders went to Barry McGuirk (164th in 33:02), Sorcha Ni Chuinneagain (571st overall, 145th woman, in 43:23) and Sharon Woods (645th overall, 179th woman, in 44:38). On Friday evening, Seamus Moore and Dominick Branigan were our representatives in the Dublin Pride 5K in the Phoenix Park, Seamus placing 6th in 17:47 and Dominick coming home at a tempo pace (recovering from his recent ultra-marathon exploit) in 17th place out of 718 runners in a time of 19:20, whilst on Sunday Andrea Talpo and Dee Ni Chearbhaill ran in the Strawberry 10 miler in Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford, both acquitting themselves well. Andrea placed 7th in a field of 217 in a time of 63:39, whilst Dee ran 75:14, to place 37th overall, 4th woman home and 1st F40. In the mountains last Wednesday, Becky Quinn continued where she left off (the previous Saturday winning on Mount Leinster in 69:47) and won the Howth Summer 9.4km race. Becky placed 19th overall in a field of 147, and she was joined by Karl Walsh (10th in 44:31), Brian McGuckin (24th in 47:54), Jonathan Claridge (30th in 49:25), Ollie McGrath (37th in 50:08), Brian Scanlan (50th in 52:34) and Pat Quill (60th in 53:29). The course involved a climb of 376m with moderate difficulty. Briefly addressing the parkruns in which we had substantial participation, there were first finisher places for Nina Holmes who ran in a modest field in Italy (Foro Italico) in a time 23:05 and 3rd overall, and for Matt Cranley with his buggy in Father Collins (19:39). Podium results went to Kieran Finucane (2nd in Poolbeg in 19:34) who led 8 other runners home, including Sarah Lyons (28th overall, 2nd woman, in 22:39) and Fiona Bane (34th overall, 3rd woman, in 22:57) and Aoife Quinn (9th overall, 3rd woman, in 23:39) in Dungloe, alongside Denis Murphy who was 4th overall in 20:54. Fiona Shine went to Wales for a Killers concert and took 3rd place (36th overall) in the 334th-strong field in Swansea Bay. Fiona’s time was 21:43. Meanwhile, Kris Ryan ran again in Coomera, taking 5th place (31st overall out of 104) in 23:12, whilst Aidan Hudner travelled to Lancaster to run alongside 334 other runners and placing 67th in 24:49. This last week was no exception and there were plenty of events from which to choose. On Wednesday evening for example, there was the usual mountain race as well as there being the traditional annual BHAA races on the grass track in Trinity around the cricket square. Then on Saturday, apart from the usual parkruns, there were several 5k races on offer. We start with the BHAA races. On an evening that threatened to be wet, but mercifully stayed dry, there were men’s and women’s races on to be run. At time of writing only of the results has been posted since, the women’s 800m, but it proved to have been one of our more successful outings. Irene Gorman won the standard 1-13 event convincingly in a time of 2:29, leading from the gun as usual and in 3rd place came Amy Wright in 2:37 in a dive for the line with Fiona Shine (4th in the same time). Rachael Yorke took 5th place in 2:41 not so far behind, with Dee Ni Chearbhaill in 7th in 2:55. In the 14-30 category, Emer Kenny placed 2nd in 2:49, followed by Sarah Lyons in 3rd in 2:52 and Fiona Lane in 20th in 3:57. The races were divided into different standards. In the men's 6-7, Philip Matthews came 6th in 2:49, just behind Sean Murphy of United Striders in 2:35. Then in 8-9, Karl Walsh came 2nd in 2:21, followed by Ollie McGrath in 4th in 2:31. Donnacha McCarthy took 9th place in 2:44 in 10-11, whilst in 12-13, Denis Murphy came home in 3rd place, followed by Tim O'Donnell (7th in 2:40), Phelim Murray (10th in 2:45) and Robbie Moore (20th in 3:00). Finally, to complete the 800m races, Paul Kelly placed 5th in standard 22-30 with a time of 3:25. Next came the mile races. Once again Irene won the standard 1-13 with an emphatic 5:30, followed by Fiona Shine in 3rd (5:56), Rachael 4th (5:56) and Amy (5th in 5:59). In 14-30, Dee won in a time of 6:20, followed by Emer in 2nd (6;23), Kate Murray (5th in 6:45), Sarah (7th in 6:51) and Fiona Lane (22nd in 8:30). In the men's races, Michael Wycherley was 4th in standard 6-7 with a time of 5:18, followed by Sean Murphy (6th in 5:32). Karl won 8-9 in 5:07, followed by Ollie (3rd in 5:32). Donnacha took 6th place in 10-11, followed by Noel Reilly (9th in 6:04). Then in 12-13, Tim took 4th in 6:05, followed by Denis (5th in 6:05) and Robbie (20th in 6:37). Phelim won 14-16 in 6:05 and Paul came 3rd in standard 22-30 in 8:08. On Saturday, the IMC met up in Le Cheile and Crusaders took part in 7 events, recording the following results: In the men's 3000m B race Frank Halligan placed 5th in a time of 10:00.94, whilst Michael Kiely came home in 13th place in the men's 1500 B race in a time of 4:29.65. Fearghal O'Hare took 5th spot in the men's 800m C event in 1:57.47, whilst Michael O'Conor came home in 2nd place in a time of 2:05.54 in the 800m E race. John O'Loughlin ran in 2 races, placing 5th in both recording 25.97 in the 200m mixed race and 58.64 in the 400m men's C race. Finally, Nick Ennis took 2nd place in the men's 400m B event. Staying with track and field, Matt Behan competed in the English U23 championships in Bedford on Sunday and after convincingly winning his heat in the 110m hurdles in 14:00, he went on to take the silver medal in the finals in 14:13 just 1/100th behind the English race winner who came through from behind when Matt hit the last hurdle. Still, it was a great outcome for our young hurdler. Last Wednesday saw another race in the IMRA Leinster League, this time on Scarr. The 8.25k race was won overall by the perennially fast master, Des Kennedy, in a time of 36:43, but we had Becky Quinn returning to the fray and she took the honours in the women’s race, placing 14th overall in a time of 43:53. Becky was followed by Brian McGuckin (31st in 47:07), Anthony O’Reilly (43rd in 48:34) and Gavan Doherty (49th in 50:00). We may also have had runners in the Leinster mountain championships on Saturday, but results are yet to be posted. There were numerous road and trail races available over the weekend and our best performances came in some of the longer ones. In the Wicklow Half marathon Niall Murphy ran with over 80 other competitors, placing 2nd in a time of 1:24:46, whilst in the Stone Mad Ultra (60km), run along the banks of the river Barrow in counties Carlow and Kilkenny, we had a winner among the 20 finishers who made the cut off time. Dominick Branigan, in training for the Berlin marathon, was the only runner to break 5 hours (4:48:58), finishing well ahead of the field in what he described as a mental as well as physical challenge, whilst Leo Lundy found the effort quite tough, eventually coming home in 20th place (ahead of the cut off) in 8:24:44. We had two runners in the flat and fast 5k Arthur’s Way race in Co. Kildare, organised by Ardclough GAA along the banks of a local canal and around the Lyons demesne. In a field of 385 runners, Helena Walsh placed 44th overall (5th woman) in a time of 22:15, followed by Aoife Quinn (60th overall, 14th woman, in 23:40). Three of our members took on the Castleknock 5k on Saturday. In a field of 673, Frank Hague placed 13th in 17:57, followed by Dee Ni Chearbhaill (53rd overall, 11th woman, in 21:14), who placed 3rd in her age category, and by Donal Foley (103rd in 23:12). Finally, we come to the parkruns. A lower turnout in every aspect generally this week, but some good runs all the same. In Darndale in a modest field Diarmuid Byrne placed first finisher (22:09) alongside Darina Scully (3rd overall in 23:45), with Maria Pertl 5th overall and 2nd woman home in 26:53. In coming home as first woman finisher Catherine Thornton placed 3rd overall in Knocknacarra, running at tempo pace and finishing in 19:57, whilst Fiona Bane did likewise in Tramore, placing 8th overall in 23:21.Kate Murray was 36th overall in Bushy Park (4th woman) in a time of 23:53 and Kate was followed by Mairead Cashman (99th overall, 21st woman, in 29:34) and Bob Lyne who no doubt walked it in 32:28 (120th). Mari Hansen took on Stavanger. In a field of 33 runners, Mari placed 17th overall, 5th woman finisher, in a time of 30:20. Also, outside the country, Aidan Hudner ran with 315 others in Glasgow, taking 60th spot in 22:27. Matt Cranley continues to push his buggy in aprkruns, this timein Father Collins, placing 6th in 20:37, whilst Luke Davis took 11th place in Marlay in a time of 18:44. We had two much larger contingents in Poolbeg and Cabinteely. In the former, Andrej Kujikis led our runners home in 3rd place in 19:15, followed by Kieran Finucane (5th in 19:37), David Timoney (9th in 19:58), Olwyn Dunne (31st overall, 4th woman, in 23:23), Sharon Woods (33rd overall, 5th woman, in 23:45), just behind. Then came Gillian Curran (53rd overall, 16th woman, in 26:17), followed by Ciara McElligott (78th overall, 30th woman, in 33:11). Lastly, in Cabinteely, Eddie Nugent took 4th place in 19:38 and he was followed by Orlaith de Burca (82nd overall, 25th woman, in 29:22). With the same time came Lisa Shine (83rd overall, 26th woman) and a second behind them came Paul Kelly (84th). Emma O’Mahony in her 2nd outing ran 34:32 for 107th place overall (41st woman), followed by Mairin Shine (112th overall, 44th woman, in 37:10). Castleknock 5k (673) Overall place Name Cat. Alix Hughes was lucky enough to run in the same race, placing 9th in a time of 13.12, and it was not the only event that Alix took on that night, finishing 2nd in the high jump with a leap of 1.3m. We had several athletes participating in the event in Santry, competing in some events which were championships. Fearghal O’Hare and Shane Keane were just both edged out of a medal in their respective disciplines, with the former placing 4th in the 400m in 52.19 and the latter placing 4th in the 100m in 11.33. All the sae, they were excellent results and they were joined by Peter Murphy who won his men’s 100m B race in 11.79. Peter also won his 400m B2 race in 52.65. Abbas Bowen was another athlete to run in more than one event, placing 3rd in the men’s 100m C race in 12.21 and 2nd in the D event in 14.00. Meanwhile, in the men’s 1500m D race our middle distance runners also are going from strength to strength. Frank Halligan placed 2nd in 4:43.35, followed by Joe McDermott (3rd in 4:49.38) and Brendan Glynn (5th in a PB time of 5:08.96, running the distance for only the 2nd time). In the women’s 1500 B and C1 combined, Emer Kenny too 9th place in 5:40.09. Nick Ennis was another winner in the sprints, running 49.77 in the men’s 400m A2 race, whilst there was also a win (like Peter and Nick) for Jonathan Miller in the men’s 400m B1 event in 51.47. John O’Loughlin took part in the 400m C1 race, placing 3rd in 58.78 and he was followed by Frank Halligan, running his 2nd event of the night, in 5th in 65.36. Last week there was another IMRA midweek race in which we had runners. As usual, Warren Swords put in a good showing in the event which took place around Prince William’s Seat in Co. Wicklow. In a field of 173 finishers, Warren placed 8th in 38:47 on an 8.4km course, involving a climb of 364m on moderate terrain. Conditions were good. Dry and warm. Brian McGuckin was next in 27th in a time of 44:36, followed by Anthony O’Reilly (38th in 46:17), Ollie McGrath (48th in 47:58) and Berndt Heim (162nd in 66:45). Over the weekend, there were several races on which to report. Olwyn Dunne took advantage of a family visit to Cork to race at the last minute in the Glanmire 4 mile race. In a field of 202 runners, Olwyn distinguished herself by placing 60th overall, 4th female finisher and winner of her age category, in a time of 30:26. Additionally, Lisa Shine also paid a visit to Cork over the weekend, placing 38th overall in a field of 192, 12th female, in a time of 23:32, in a Doneraile AC-organised 5k race. Barry McGuire joined 390 other runners on Friday evening to take part in the Patrick Bell 5k organised by Bohermeen AC. In a race won by Peter Somba, Barry placed 119th in a time of 20:09. Pat Quill reported that he took part in the South Downs 100m race near Eastbourne in England on Saturday, completing the event in 23:03, whilst Leo Lundy also ran in England, completing the Explorer marathon along the Thames in 5:19 and earning an obscenely large medal in the process. Further afield two of our exiles had sterling performances in their respective events. Kris Ryan placed 3rd female finisher in the Gold Coast 100 in Australia, whilst Ian Kinsella also placed 3rd in the 5 peaks run in the Rattlesnake Point Conservation Area in Ontario Canada. Numbers were up generally in the parkruns on Saturday morning, everyone taking advantage of the beautiful weather we are currently enjoying. In Aylesbury near London, Sarah Lyons ran along with 116 others, placing 18th overall and finishing as first female in a time of 23:32. There was also a first finisher place for Olwyn Dunne in Brickfields where she ran 24:58 to place 7th overall. In the same event, husband Joe also ran really well to place 3rd in 23:24. In Olwyn’s home parkrun of Cabinteely we had several runners. They were led home by Eddie Nugent in 5th place (19:43), followed by Kate Murray (35th overall, 4th woman home, in 24:32), Mairead Cashman (102nd overall, 36th female, in 29:52) and Emma O’Mahony (136th overall, 56th woman, in 37:42) in her first run since becoming a mum for the first time. All the events reported on this week have enjoyed good conditions, if a little too warm at times. We start with the BHAA Government Services 5 mile road race held on the country roads around Dunboyne on Tuesday evening. A smaller contingent than usual from the club took part in the race that measured nearly 400 runners. Karl Walsh ran a strong race on the largely flat course with a time of 29:35 (46th), followed by TJ Bourke, coming back to form with a convincing 30:13 (61st) and Eddie Nugent, doing likewise (77th in 31:23). The contingent was completed by Tomas Dunne (116th in 33:14) and the ever-present Robbie Moore (172nd in 35:21). Sean Murphy who trains with the club also ran, finishing in 37th place in a time of 29:12. The following day saw the 157-strong IMRA race that took place on Carrick Mountain. This was an event, 6km in length, run over moderate terrain with a climb in excess of 420m. 6 of our members joined in the fray, with Warren Swords leading the pack home in 6th place in a time of 37:39, under a minute behind the race winner. Gavan Doherty was in next, with a time of 47:01 (53rd place), followed immediately by Anthony O’Reilly (54th in 47:06) and then by Ali Onur Uyar (63rd in 48:18), Pat Quill (79th in 50:23) and by Berndt Heim (143rd on 67:23). Also on Wednesday, Darina Scully travelled up to take part in the graded meet in Drogheda, its 3rd of the season. Darina contested the mixed grade B 3,000m race, in which she finished 5th in a time of 12:38.73. Over the weekend, Phelim Murray and Sarah Lyons travelled to Holland where they took part in the Hoorn 10K, part of the Hoorn marathon festival. In a field measuring just short of 950, Phelim took 78th place in a time of 45:55, whilst Sarah came home in 225th place overall in 52:06. Closer to home, Seamus Moore participated in the Balbriggan Roadrunner Summerfest 5k. Running alongside more than 300 other participants Seamus came home in 7th place in a great time of 18:03 that may well have been a PB for him. However, the performance of the weekend has to go to Brian Leonard who decided to take on the marathon in Cork having not been satisfied with his recent result in Hamburg, just over a month ago. Hats off that, with only a 2 minutes positive split, Brian managed to come home, in warm conditions, in a super time of 2:58:49, his first sub-3 hour marathon following races in which he had come close on several occasions. Aoife Quinn took part in the half marathon in Cork, completing it in 1:54:4, whilst Denis Murphy and Colm Kernan took part in the marathon relay. Another big event of the weekend was of course the Women’s Mini Marathon, in which Olwyn Dunne stepped up this year to become race director of an event that could well have seen 50,000 competitors participating in warm conditions, and by all accounts performed admirably. The results for all the runners have yet to appear but the 10k race was won by Lizzie Lee in a time of 34:10, followed by Laura Shaughnessy in 34:30. Our first runner home was Dee Ni Chearbhaill and our other runners included Rachael Yorke, Kate Murray, Lisa Shine, Fiona Shine Orlaith de Burca, Joanne Carey, Fiona Bane and Suzanne Martin. All reported that it was much tougher this year than recent editions, because of the heat. We had several podium places in parkruns on Saturday. Darina Scully was first female finisher in Father Collins, placing 12th overall in 22:51, whilst Catherine Thornton was also first female finisher in an unusually warm Knocknacarra, placing 4th overall in a time of 19:57. Joe Walsh travelled to Hasenheide in Germany where he placed 3rd out of a field of 75 in a time of 18:38. Mari Hansen and Leo Lundy also travelled abroad to run. Mari ran in Toyen in Norway, placing 58th overall, 15th woman, in a field of 75, whilst Leo ran in the Eden Project parkrun in Cornwall, placing 81st in a field of 244 in a time of 26:46. Our largest contingent unsurprisingly ran in Poolbeg. The 7-strong contingent were led home by David O’Donnell (16th in 20:48), followed by Zalan Kovacs (28th in 22:10), Miriam Logan (41st overall, 5th woman, in 23:39), Fiona Bane (45th overall, 7th woman, in 24:10), Maria Esteban (49th overall, 10th woman, in 25:02), Cuan Moore (50th in 25:11) and Ciara McElligott (99th overall, 33rd woman, in 32:32). Luke Davis (14th in 19:08) and David Long (331st in 31:28) ran in Marlay, whilst Colm Kernan (79th in 23:11), Sharon Woods (110th overall, 9th woman, in 23:59) and Lorraine Fitzsimons (274th overall, 72nd woman, in 30:29) ran in St. Anne’s Raheny. Paul Flynn placed 5th in 19:58 in Kilkenny, whilst Denis Murphy ran in nearby Fairview where he placed 24th in a time of 25:20. Orlaith de Burca placed 77th overall (16th woman) in 29:08 in Cabinteely, whilst Milo Furlong ran down in Johnstown in Wexford, placing 39th in 25:38. Lisa and Mairin Shine travelled afar to Dungloe in Co. Donegal where they placed respectively 16th and 19th overall (5th and 8th women finishers) in 34:02 and 39:07. Finally, in Poppintree, Maria Pertl placed 37th overall (9th woman) in 25:47 followed immediately by partner Diarmuid Byrne (38th in 25:48) BHAA Govt Services 5 mile race (397) Overall place Name Cat.
