A Time for Reflection

Not too many events to report on this weekend, which was marked by the unchipped (and, therefore, untimed) Remembrance Run. Helena Walsh was well up there and also there was participation from Tony Owens and three members of the Fitzsimons family (John, Lorraine, Michael and Mary) on the 5K loop taking in the Ordnance Survey Road, Furry Glen and Furze Road at the northern end of the Phoenix Park. Conditions were a little windy and cold, but dry. The event was well-supported musically, especially by a gospel choir at the crossroads marking both 2 and 4 Km.

On Saturday morning John McAuley, Ollie McGrath and Brian McGuckin took part in the last IMRA race of the season, the so-called Powerscourt Ridge run which took in parts of Djouce and the Wicklow Way. The16k course was extremely challenging for the 174 runners who participated. Conditions were soggy underfoot,  but there was also a 920m climb overall on difficult terrain onto a foggy summit. John was first Crusader home, in 17th place, in a time of 1:30:54, followed by Brian (32nd in 1:37:27) and then by Ollie (49th in 1:42:20). The race winner was Seamus Lynch from Newcastle in a time of 1:13:38.

At the weekend, in Malta, Rebecca Fleming took part in the Zurrieq half marathon improving on her PB to 1:40:20, placing 99th overall in a field of 255 and 6th woman home. On holiday in Vancouver, Fiona Bane ran in the Fall Classic Half marathon, placing 269th overall (98th female finisher) in a field of nearly 650 runners and a time of 1:51:46. Leo Lundy also maintained his marathon exploits over the weekend. This marked his 100th marathon in 100 weeks and this last (the Inaugural Remembrance Marathon) was completed by Leo in just under 5 hours on the Thames towpath near Walton on Thames just outside London. Further afield, another inveterate marathoner, Leslie Lluyd Hughes, took on the Rock'n'Roll marathon and 5K events in Las Vegas, placing 762nd in a field of nearly 3,000 in the marathon with a time of 4:11:29 and 308th out of nearly 7,000 participants in the 5K in a time of 24:12.

Moving as usual on to the parkruns, we had two first finishers from the club at the weekend. Dee Ni Chearbhaill was our only representative in Fairview and placed 9th overall out of nearly 70 runners and first woman home in 22:18. Fiona Bane had to go further afield for her success, running in British Columbia, the day before her half marathon. In a modest field in Richmond BC, Fiona placed 13th overall, first woman home in 24:54. Quite a few crusaders ran in Malahide and in Poolbeg. In Malahide, which was celebrating its 5th birthday, Brian Scanlan placed 33rd in a field of nearly 380 and a time of 20:46. Brian was followed by Diarmuid Byrne (119th in 24:25) and Darina Scully (120th overall, 21st woman finisher, in 24:27), all three veterans of the recent Dublin marathon, with Darina pacing the 25 minute finishers. The final member of the contingent was Paul Kelly who took 260th spot in 29:52, pacing the 30 minute finishers. Meanwhile just across the Liffey, we had 7 runners in Poolbeg among the field of 110. David Timoney led our runners home in 11th place (19:59). He was followed by Zalan Kovacs (26th in 22:06), then, in a line, recent Dublin marathoner Kate Murray (50th overall, 6th female, in 24:34), followed by Ali May Hannigan (52nd overall, 7th woman, in 24:35) and Sharon Woods (53rd overall, 8th woman, in 24:36). Gillian Errity took 102nd spot overall (34th female) in 33:24, almost immediately followed by Don Anderton (103rd in 33:41). Our next decent showing in terms of numbers was in St. Anne’s Raheny. For the second week in a row Matt Cranley ran with a pushchair (getting faster as each week goes by!), placing 69th in a field of nearly 390, with a time of 22:04. Matt was followed by Aoife Quinn (162nd overall, 25th female, in 25:50) and by Lorraine Fitzsimons (302nd overall, 106th female, in 29:45). All the remaining events had one runner each from the club. Ciaran Smyth placed 2nd in Clonakilty, with a time of 19:21 in a field exceeding 50 runners. Neil Brown placed 32nd out of 109 participants in Shanganagh with 23:28.Mairin Shine ran in the 113-strong field in Cabinteely, placing 94th overall, 36th female finisher, in 31:26, whilst Mairead Cashman came home in 141st place overall, 39th female, in Ballincollig. Mairead’s time was 29:32. Finally, Kevin Flynn placed 43rd out of nearly 100 participants in Porterstown, with a time of 27:24.
