After all the excitement of last weekend, it’s been a relatively quiet week in terms of road racing (apart perhaps from the run in the Ironman, full and half, down in Youghal in East Cork), but we saw success for a Crusader in the Irish mountain Championships.
There was, however, also action on the track over the weekend. On Saturday, in Tullamore, Co. Offaly, in extremely warm conditions, we had a few club members take part in the National Masters Track and Field Championships. On the track Marcus Timlin placed 8th in the M50 100m in a time of 16.67, whilst, in the M65 race, Liam Lyster won silver in a time of 14.68. Liam also went on to take silver in the M65 200m in a time of 31.23, whilst, in the M70 race, Donal Swift finished just outside the medals in 4th place in a time of 38.43. He did, however, get his reward later, in running the M70 400m, where he took the bronze medal in a time of 91.21. Meanwhile, John O’Loughlin took 4th place in the 400m M55 race in a time of 61.64. Finally, on the track, Peter O’Toole took on the 5000m and placed 5th M40 in a time of 17:05.75. So, apart from the masters track and field championships in Tullamore, there was competition in the Munster and Irish Mountain Championships on Sunday on Galtymore, Co. Tipperary on a course of 13k with a climb of 1300m over difficult terrain. Becky Quinn took part in the event, placing second in the women’s race and 17th overall in a time of 2:05:04, but the result was sufficient to see her crowned national champion once again. Congrats to her. Further afield, three of our exiles in Australia raced over the weekend. Steven Walker took part in the Sunshine Coast marathon where he ran 3:37. Meanwhile, Niamh Allen and Katie Rogers were competitors in the City2Surf 14km. In a field exceeding 46,000, Katie placed 651st overall and 40th female finisher in a time of 56:06, whilst Niamh ran 48:47 for 77th place overall and 5th female finisher. Once again, Italo Giancaterina won a race in Italy. This was the 42nd edition of the Notturna Luca dei Marsi 10k, in which he recorded a time of 33:22. Our 69-years old Jersey-based exile, Roy McCarthy, ran in the Jayson Lee Memorial 10k where he recorded a highly respectable time of 49:18. Finally, we had a few members involved in triathlons over the weekend. Isabelle Cairns competed in the European triathlon championships in Germany, in a team representing Ireland, whilst Diarmuid Sheehan and Eoghan Kerins took part in the Ironman event in Youghal, Co. Cork. There are also a couple of results from the previous week which were missed and which may be of interest to members. In the World Paratriathlon series in Swansea, Donnacha McCarthy, a visually-impaired athlete, placed 8th with his partner, one of their best performances of the season. Also, last weekend, Valentin Akdim took part in a mountainous marathon in the French Pyrenees. Valentin completed the event in 6 hours and placed 128th out of field of 277. Warm but comfortable conditions combined with a stunning landscape to make the experience extremely enjoyable. Despite generally lower participation across the board in parkruns this weekend, we had plenty of first and podium finishers. Alma Hanevy ran in her native Westmeath, where in the Mullingar parkrun she placed 5th in a field of 47 and first female finisher in 21:17. Not to be outdone, husband Joe Walsh, who is currently training for the Berlin marathon, was also a first finisher, this time in Brickfields with its 51-strong field. Joe ran 18:40, but the time hides a minute-long detour taken after he realised that there was another lap to go. He still finished ahead and was then able to train afterwards with the Cru in the Phoenix Park. Áine Kenny ran in Oranmore where she finished first female in 23:23 and 11th overall alongside 41 other runners. Meanwhile, Stephen Hurley finished ahead of the 100-strong field in Poolbeg in a time of 18:22. He was followed by Tara Murphy (41st and 9th in 25:48), Kate Healy (74th and 24th in 30:02), Mairin Shine (76th and 25th in 30:35) and Anna Shine (85th and 28th in 32:04). Michael Wycherley continues his holidays in the UK and was first ahead of a field of 213 in Bognor Regis. Michael’s time was 18:24. Louise Dobbyn came home in 13th place and first female finisher in Cabinteely this week. Louise ran alongside 130 other runners and her time was 22:55. Our final first finisher was Mairead Cashman who ran in a modest field of 8 in Darndale, where she placed 5th and first in a time of 29:09. Podium places were recorded by several clubmates. Ger Forde took 2nd place in the 100-strong field in Naas in a time of 17:47, whilst Kate Murray took 3rd place in Lough Key. Kate placed 19th overall in a field of 130 and a time of 26:12. Darina Scully also placed 19th overall and 3rd in a field of 77 in Gorey. Darina’s time was 24:36. Meanwhile Sarah Lyons and Rachael Yorke ran in Tolka Valley Park, where Sarah placed 7th and 3rd in 23:39 and Rachael placed 12th and 4th in 24:39. The field measured 44. John Lohan joined the field of 84 in Oldbridge where he took 7th spot in 21:06, whilst Eoghan Corrigan ran in Kilcock where he placed 8th in a time of 21:12. The field there measured 73. Aoife Cowhie ran in the 197-strong field in Malahide, where she placed 72nd and 12th in 25:52, whilst Ciaran Smyth headed further afield to Poznan in Poland where he placed 23rd in 23:42 in a field of 74. Colm Foley joined 97 other runners in Griffeen Park where he took 22nd spot in 24:29, whilst, in Poppintree, Diarmuid Byrne placed 76th in 29:00, followed by Maria Pertl (133rd and 49th in 34:43). We had 4 runners in Shanganagh. Tanja Narancic (83rd and 22nd) led the contingent home alongside Olwyn Dunne (84th and 23rd) who was given the same time of 27:16. They were followed in the field of 153 by Orlaith de Burca (96th and 33rd in 27:58) and Carina Davidson (123rd and 50th in 31:02). Finally, we had 5 clubmates in St. Anne’s with its field of 282. The contingent was led across the line by Brian Kelleher (17th in 20:18), Alan Kavanagh (21st in 20:48), Michael Maughan (27th in 21:18), Paul F. Kelly (171st in 28:34) and Aoife Kelly (215th and 65th in 31:30). IMRA Galtymore (37) Overall place Name Cat.
